Beryl live updates: Texas under hurricane watch

Hurricane Beryl made landfall on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula on Friday morning after it ripped through Jamaica and the Caribbean earlier this week , leaving 11 dead as southern Texas and the Gulf Coast brace for the storm's arrival this weekend.

Beryl weakened to a tropical storm with 60 mph as it moved across the Yucatan, but now that the center of the storm is over the Gulf of Mexico, the National Hurricane Center forecast calls for Beryl to re-strengthen. By 11 p.m. C.T. Friday, Beryl was about 615 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph.

The center extended a watch for the Texas coast , meaning hurricane conditions are expected within 36 hours. The watch now stretches from the mouth of the Rio Grande eastward to San Luis Pass. A hurricane watch is also in effect for mainland Mexico from the Rio Grande south to Barra el Mezquital.

The center's forecast cone graphic shows Beryl with winds of 90 mph as it nears the coast Monday somewhere between the Texas/Mexico border and Galveston. The entire coast of Texas lies within the forecast cone – which indicates the likely path of the center of the storm over the next five days.

A storm surge watch is also in effect for almost the entire Texas coast, from the mouth of the Rio Grande to High Island.

Additional watches and warnings along the U.S. coast could be possible later, the center stated.

Hurricane Beryl expected to move over southern Texas

It may take 12-24 hours before the hurricane begins to reintensify again as it recovers from its trip across the Yucatan and copes with some windy conditions, the hurricane center said Friday.

The winds are forecast to become more favorable as Beryl moves into the western Gulf and Beryl is forecast to become a hurricane within about 36 hours, the hurricane center said. The risk of hurricane-force winds and life-threatening storm surge are increasing along the coast and flooding is possible along the Texas coast and eastern Texas through the middle of the week.

Beryl is forecast to produce 5-10 inches of rainfall in Texas , with up to 15 inches in isolated locations, across portions of the coast and in eastern Texas beginning late Sunday through the middle of next week, the hurricane center said. The storm also is forecast to deliver a storm surge amounts of 2-5 feet along the coast and dangerous rip currents.

"Today and Saturday will be our calm before the storm," the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi wrote in an advisory Friday.

Beryl's effects are expected to flare up Friday evening, including a high risk of rip currents, the center said. By Saturday, the coast could see some minor flooding as some showers begin ahead of the hurricane's arrival.

Residents should make "preparedness plans," forecasters said.

Multiple large urban areas in Texas, including Houston, Austin and San Antonio, lie in the storm's broad path of projection, according to a Friday morning advisory from the weather service.

In Houston, locally heavy rainfall is the "primary severe weather threat" as Beryl makes landfall near or on the South Texas coast Sunday night or early Monday and works its way generally northwestward into Wednesday, the weather service said.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott directed the state's Division of Emergency Management to increase its readiness level for the storm on Thursday.

"As Texans and visitors around the south coastal areas begin to celebrate our nation's Independence Day, I urge them to make an emergency plan, review hurricane evacuation routes, and continue to monitor weather conditions to ensure the safety of themselves and their loved ones," he wrote in a news release .

Forecasters are uncertain whether the storm will reach Austin, weather service meteorologist Mack Morris told the Austin American-Statesman , part of the USA TODAY Network, on Thursday. By the time the storm hits Texas, it could be downgraded to a Category 1 storm, he said.

Hurricane Center  Director Michael Brennan warned Texans to keep checking forecasts through the holiday weekend. If Beryl affects the western Gulf of Mexico as a tropical storm, "it could be during the day Saturday," he said.

'Yesterday was scary, but … we are good'

A light rain in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, midday Friday settled Gabi Vasquez' worries about the hurricane's effects.

Her car maintenance company put up ads on social media offering to repair houses and property damaged in the storm. As of noon local time, no calls had yet come in.

"Yesterday was scary, but right now, we are good," she said.

Her family, who live in Tulum, also reassured her that they were safe. Their electricity had even stayed on. "Internet – I think they don't have it, but it's all good," she said.

Vasquez did her own preparation for Beryl's arrival, including securing her home's windows and doors. "Also, we bought food like tuna, water and candles," she said.

Some flights canceled in Cancun as Hurricane Beryl approaches

More than 1,170 temporary shelters were installed throughout the Yucatan Peninsula ahead of the storm, according to a news release Thursday from the state's government. The Tulum International Airport shut down and was set to remain closed until Sunday. Cancun Airport was operational, but many flights were canceled.

Beryl strengthened to become the earliest Category 5 storm on record earlier this week. It brought widespread devastation as it passed over the Caribbean Sea.

On Thursday, the storm barreled through Grand Cayman, the largest of the Cayman islands. It touched down in Jamaica the day before as a Category 4 hurricane, triggering power outages, destroying structures, and forcing hundreds into emergency shelters.

Officials updated the storm's death toll to 11 on Thursday but said news of more deaths probably would come in as communications were restored.

Task force deployed as U.S. embassy closes

The U.S. Embassy in Mexico expected to shutter its doors Friday, with plans to reopen Monday.

Mexico's government established a "prevention zone" across the part of the Yucatan's coastline under hurricane warnings. Dozens of rivers and dams throughout the areas were being monitored, according to a news release Wednesday.

A task force of 8,535 response elements and 727 vehicles will be deployed, Tania Patricia Ramírez Gutiérrez, director of Mexico's National Communication Center, said in the news release.

Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador advised people to seek high altitudes and take shelter in a post on X .

"Let us not hesitate, material things can be recovered," he wrote. "The most important thing is life."

Jamaica, Caribbean islands assess damage, deaths from Hurricane Beryl

Hurricane Beryl's arrival in Mexico comes after it left widescale destruction on its path through the Caribbean .

The storm caused the deaths of at least 11 people in Jamaica, Grenada, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and northern Venezuela.

Jamaica confirmed two deaths in the hurricane, Prime Minister Andrew Holness told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. in an interview Thursday. One body had not been recovered, Holness said.

"The report is that that person was swept out to sea, but we're still seeking to see if we could recover the body," he said.

One person in the parish of Hanover was killed by a downed tree , Richard Thompson, deputy director general of Jamaica's Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, said.

Holness said officials were working to assess the damage sustained by the island. "We have now transitioned from the preparedness phase into the recovery phase," he said.

More than 90% of all homes and buildings on three islands within the Grenadine Island chain were destroyed by the hurricane when it tore through earlier this week, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency said Wednesday . St. Vincent and the Grenadines "bore the brunt of Hurricane Beryl," said Elizabeth Riley, the disaster management agency's executive director.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines could be at risk of food shortages after the storm destroyed half of the island's plantain and banana crops, Permanent Agriculture Ministry Secretary Nerissa Gittens-McMillan said.

Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell called the level of destruction in the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique "almost Armageddon-like" in a news conference Tuesday.

"There's really nothing that can prepare you to see this level of destruction."

Horrible service. My 10 year old would had done a better job if I handed him some dawn to clean the trucks. September 21, 2021, 12:39 am I honestly do not like giving bad reviews on places but I have to be completely honest to save people of going through horrible experiences & so they don't waste money…I had never actually been to Big D's until today…I delivered right up the street so I figured what the hay…I need to get my trailer washed out anyways so why not…The price was $45 which I thought was a bit over priced but hey, it was saving me time or @least I thought…So I wait & I wait & I wait…2 whole hours to get in & out of there..I opened the doors for them…You know before I went in because I just do that sometimes so it's one less thing they have to do…They didn't even close my doors after washing my trailer out…Then there's the fact that there's no restroom or food there… I'm not sure how much they charge for parking but when I paid for my washout, I asked the guy behind the counter would I still have to pay for parking even if I have receipt for the washout because, you know it's only paid parking there…He says yes..You have to pay for parking also, if u park for the night..NEVER EVER AGAIN WILL I GIVE THESE PEOPLE MY BUSINESS....NEVER…One star was to much to give for a business like this … – show 0 0 Reply

Its called a travel center but no food ? As a travel center you need more than just truck repairs and parking. Their money hungry and thats it. But no food is the main issue.

My opinion a very Bad choice for a truck stop, no cooked foods, only microwaveble foods, and a hotdog cooker, $20.00 for parking, and I'm assuming due to a holiday weekend because all other reviews are saying $12.00, $20.00 for a shower, no lounge at all, not even a table to sit at. Pretty easy to get in and out of and diesel was pretty reasonable.

Plenty of parking, it is pay to park, $12. Designated bobtail parking area. Plenty of areas to take your pet outside. Truck wash, truck service, 6 showers, small showers but clean, in a separate building/area. Showers are $12 or free with 100 gallons fuel, parking free with 100 gallons fuel as well. There is not a food service or cafe of any kind. They have bottled beverages and bagged snacks. Fuel is pretty low priced. Overall is a clean facility,and good location if you're doing a p/u or del nearby since the big name t-stops are a good ways out and you'll most likely have to deal with Dallas traffic.

Very poor customer service. They know they are the only place to park in a 20 mile radius so they gouge trucksrivers to pay to park. What a load of BS. Pay $12 to park or $200 for diesel. One more reason to hate the DFW area. I will go on illegal hours before I park in this dump again. And I guess there is no need to know English to work here. Good grief Charlie Brown !!

I won't be back. Paid $12 to park and a chrome polisher told me I had to move out of my parking spot, because that's where he does his business. Spoke with the manager and he didn't care. Will never come back to this place again. No restaurant or driver conveniences at all. This place doesn't even deserve one star. CB code name - Hardcase - from the sticker patch. Truck safe.

Cheap fuel, quick service and easy to get in and out. Only truck stop in the area but good prices. Always get my oil changed there.

You don’t need to empty your wallet to have a great time in Dallas, Texas, with your whole family and kids of all ages! We picked 25 of our favorite places to visit and free things to do in Dallas as a family.

When I moved to the area in 2013, I quickly realized how family-friendly it is in Dallas. However, entertaining a family can be very expensive year-round, so I sought out those hidden gems that we can do that are also free!  These are my favorite free, family-friendly activities to experience in Dallas. Get Outside in Dallas: Parks and Outdoor Green Spaces

Dallas has many parks and green spaces offering plenty of opportunities for families to enjoy the great outdoors without spending a dime. From expansive urban parks to tranquil lakesides, there are many places to explore and enjoy.

Klyde Warren Park

Location: 2012 woodall rodgers freeway, dallas, tx 75201.

Built above the Woodall Rodgers Freeway, this five-acre unique and updated urban park has been designed as a space to breathe among the hustle and bustle of Downtown Dallas. We love spending time here. 

The Nancy Best Fountain lights up in different colors at night and has music playing for little kids to jump through the water features. We always combine our visit with time at the Sheila and Jody Grant Children’s Park, with a kid-sized climbing wall, a slide, and safe play surfaces in a gated area.

There are tons of great shaded spots when the temperature rises, bathrooms and parking spots close by, and some great eating options with food trucks or restaurants to try. This is the ultimate place to enjoy various free things to do in Dallas in one place.

White Rock Lake

Location: 8300 east lawther drive, dallas.

Pack a picnic and enjoy one of the many grassy areas with a picnic table around the lake. The loop around the lake is just over nine miles and is great for a family stroll, walk, or bike ride. It’s easily stroller accessible, too. 

Look out for the birds that love to visit the lake, and check out the signs for more information on the nature surrounding the area. Bring your own fishing equipment and kayak or canoe to enjoy paddling on the lake—both great free options! Check their calendar online before you visit, as they do have some free community events, festivals, or concerts throughout the year.

Reverchon Park

Location: 3505 maple avenue, dallas.

What we love about this park is the opportunities for sports and fitness—without fees! They have baseball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts (bring your own equipment), and outdoor fitness areas to try. It also connects to the Big D’s famed Katy Trail, which is popular for walking, jogging, and biking.

Combine your activity with relaxation: while the kids use the playground, there are some great tranquil spots to watch the world go by.

Trinity River Audubon Center

Location: 6500 great trinity forest way, dallas.

You may never expect to see such a beautiful spot with nature trails, hiking, wildlife, and learning opportunities so close to the city of Dallas. Expect a mixture of wetlands, forest, and prairie, offering unique chances to see birds and wildlife in that habitat. 

There is a great nature play space for kids to learn while they play at the same time. Bring a picnic to save spending money on lunch and make the most of the free programs and self-guided tours.

Things to Do in Dallas for Free: Hiking, Biking, and Outdoor Play

Hiking, biking, and getting outdoors are crucial when we have pockets of moderate weather here in Dallas (not too hot or too cold!). I picked three of our favorite spots around the Dallas area for you to try.

Arbor Hills Nature Preserve

Location: 6701 w. parker road, plano .

The preserve has three miles of trails and unpaved areas with great views of the prairie. It also has pavilions and a really great playground for kids of all ages.

Cedar Ridge Preserve

Location: 7171 mountain creek parkway, dallas.

Keep a look out for deer, rabbits, and butterflies—and bring your binoculars for a wide variety of bird-spotting options! The walking trails are different levels, from easy to challenging, so pick wisely before you start. Stop by the Native Plant Garden, which has educational displays for kids about local plant species and the ecosystem.

Katie Jackson Park

Location: 4900 haverwood lane, dallas .

In addition to various sports fields and courts for baseball and basketball, the park also has a wooded area and a safe playground with new(ish) equipment like swings, slides, and climbing for different ages. The park also has nice paved nature trails for hiking, biking, and stroller walks! 

Explore One of Our Great Free Museums

Dallas is home to a variety of museums that offer free admission, making it easy for families to engage with art, history, and science. Whether you are interested in classical masterpieces, modern art, or cultural heritage, there is a museum that will captivate the entire family.

Dallas Museum of Art

Location: 1717 n harwood street, dallas.

Always free, we love the family programs and special events they have during the year. They have some great exhibits, interactive galleries, and art activities for kids of all ages. 

Crow Museum of Asian Art

Location: 2010 flora street, dallas.

Take advantage of free admission and immerse your family in Asian art, sculptures, paintings, and textiles. In addition to an impressive permanent collection, the museum also hosts great educational programs and activities for kids.

African American Museum

Location: 3536 grand ave, dallas.

Located in Fair Park (home of the famous State Fair of Texas), the museum has one of the largest collections of African American folk art in the US and engaging exhibits and programs for kids. 

Nasher Sculpture Center (Free on Certain Days)

Location: 2001 flora st, dallas.

Mark your calendars for free entry on the first Saturday of every month. There will also be special programs and art projects for kids.

Perot Museum (Free on Certain Days)

Location: 2201 n field st, dallas.

Another one to mark your calendar for: the renowned Perot Museum opens for free admission on the first Thursday of every month from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. It features hands-on exhibits and interactive displays for kids focused on dinosaurs, space, and engineering.

Enjoy a Family Friendly Festival or Event

Dallas hosts numerous festivals and events throughout the year that are perfect for families. These gatherings often feature free entertainment, from live music and movies to cultural celebrations and seasonal activities. Check the local calendar for upcoming events to plan your family outings.

Dallas Farmers Market (Free Entry, Select Vvents)

Location: 920 s harwood st, dallas.

The market area sometimes features free outdoor movie screenings during special events and festivals. Be sure to check in advance to find out when they are.

Outdoor Concerts and Movies in the Park

Pull out your lawn chairs, coolers, and blankets to enjoy some great free showings of moonlit movies at The Shops at Park Lane, Sammons Park at AT&T Performing Arts Center in Downtown Dallas, and Griggs Park in Dallas.

If you love live music, they also have outdoor concerts, orchestras, solo performances, and live bands at Klyde Warren Park throughout the year and nearby at Sammons Park at AT&T Performing Arts Center.

Local Festivals

The Main Garden Fall Festival is in the heart of Downtown Dallas and offers pumpkin patches, hayrides, live music, and kid-friendly crafts. In the Spring, we head to Deep Ellum for the Deep Ellum Arts Festival. It features over 200 visual artists, 100 bands, and street performers in an easily walkable area, along with art exhibits, live music, and food trucks. 

Summer in Dallas: Splash Pads and Outdoor Pools

Finding Splash Pads is a great free option around Dallas, TX. The newly renovated fountains and splash pad at the edge of Klyde Warren Park are a huge favorite! Here are two more Splash Pad picks for you:

Campbell Green Park

Location: 16600 park hill dr, dallas.

This is hugely popular in the Summer. It offers various water features, play structures, a playground, and a picnic area.

Location: 3080 S Hampton Rd, Dallas

This splash pad has multiple water features alongside playgrounds, sports fields, and a place for a picnic. 

Our favorite Outdoor Pools in Dallas

Fretz park pool, location: 6998 belt line road, dallas.

This Dallas favorite is open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. While it’s not free, it’s very cheap, and they often have special discount days you can plan around. 

Tietze Park Pool

Location: 2700 skillman st, dallas.

This laid-back pool has a separate kiddie pool and space for sunbathing and picnics.

The Holidays in Dallas: Check out the Holiday Lights and Displays

Look out for the Dallas Children’s Health Holiday Parade every December. It has elaborate floats, marching bands, and performances. Check the route and find a good spot with parking nearby. 

For a walking option and to see beautifully decorated homes with beautiful lights and displays, Highland Park is a great place to enjoy a night with your family. Armstrong Parkway and Beverly Drive are well known for their stunning lights.

Head downtown to the Dallas City Hall Plaza for a beautiful display, a large Christmas tree, and decorations to celebrate the Holidays.  Head indoors to the Dallas Galleria Mall and marvel at the tallest Christmas tree in Dallas, which overlooks its indoor ice skating rink.

Beryl maps show path and landfall forecast of tropical storm that could become a hurricane again

Tropical Storm Beryl  was set to emerge in the Gulf of Mexico Friday night after making landfall early in the day as a hurricane on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula before weakening, and was on a path that will likely bring it to Texas early next week, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said. 

Beryl was forecast to strengthen while moving over the Gulf of Mexico and regain hurricane status by Sunday. It is expected to approach northeastern Mexico and the southern Texas Gulf Coast Sunday night. 

The storm blew past the Cayman Islands and Jamaica earlier in the week, initially making landfall Monday over the island of Carriacou in Grenada while tearing through the Caribbean , strengthening at times to a Category 5 hurricane — the  strongest rating .

What is Beryl's projected path?

The hurricane center said Friday's landfall was just northeast of the resort town of Tulum. After passing over the Yucatan, Beryl was forecast to emerge over the Gulf of Mexico Friday night. 

"A turn to the northwest is expected later on Saturday, with the center of Beryl expected to approach the coast of northeastern Mexico and Texas Sunday and Sunday night," the hurricane center said.

Parts of northeastern Mexico and the lower and middle Texas coast were at risk of seeing hurricane-force winds and life-threatening storm surge late Sunday and Monday, according to the center.

CBS News Texas chief meteorologist Scott Padgett said its possible Beryl will make landfall near South Padre Island on Texas' southern coast. The storm was then expected to move into the northern part of the state later in the week, Padgett said. 

"Depending on the path of Beryl, some spots of North Texas may see up to 7 inches of rain," Padgett said .

As of late Friday evening, Beryl's center was directly over Progreso, Mexico, and 580 miles southeast of Brownsville, Texas. It was traveling northwest at 15 mph with maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, making it a tropical storm, but Beryl was expected to re-intensify from the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

A hurricane watch was in effect for the Texas coast from the mouth of the Rio Grande northward to Sargent, Texas, and for Mexico's northeastern coast from Barra el Mezquital to the Rio Grande.

Where is Beryl bringing rain and flooding?

Hurricane conditions were possible along the western Gulf Coast by late Sunday, according to the hurricane center.

"Heavy rainfall of 5 to 10 inches with localized amounts of 15 inches is expected across portions of the Texas Gulf Coast and eastern Texas beginning late Sunday through the middle of next week. This rainfall is expected to produce areas of flash and urban flooding," the center said. 

Beryl became the  first hurricane  of the 2024  Atlantic hurricane season  on Saturday and rapidly strengthened. It first reached Category 4 on Sunday, wavering back to Category 3 before returning to Category 4 on Monday and then becoming a Category 5 later Monday night. It is the first major hurricane east of the Lesser Antilles on record for June, according to Philip Klotzbach, Colorado State University hurricane researcher.

Brian McNoldy, a tropical meteorology researcher for the University of Miami, told The Associated Press warm waters fueled Beryl, with ocean heat content in the deep Atlantic the highest on record for this time of year.

Beryl has also set records  as the first June hurricane ever to hit Category 4, the farthest east a storm has ever hit Category 4, and the first storm before September to go from tropical depression to major hurricane in under 48 hours, CBS News weather producer David Parkinson reported.

Beryl was also the earliest Category 5 hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic basin and was only the second Category 5 storm recorded in July since 2005, according to the hurricane center.
