Tim McGarry: ‘People still seem to love Give My Head Peace’

As satirical sitcom give my head peace marks its 25th anniversary with new episodes and a christmas special, david roy speaks to da himself, aka belfast comedian tim mcgarry, about the show’s success and why he’s looking forward to bringing the ever-popular stage version out on tour early next year....

Tim McGarry and the cast of Give My Head Peace pose in a promotional image for the new episodes and live stage show

THIS year marks the 25th anniversary of BBC Northern Ireland sitcom Give My Head Peace, the endearingly silly send-up of local stereotypes created by local comedy troupe The Hole In The Wall Gang.

Gang leader Tim McGarry – who plays frustrated family man and hapless would-be republican leader Da in the show, alongside Hole In The Wall Gang comrades Damon Quinn (AKA Cal, Da’s half-wit son), Michael McDowell (AKA Da’s son-in-law, Billy ‘the peeler’) and Marty Reid (AKA lovable loyalist schemer Uncle Andy) – can scarcely believe they have now reached such a major milestone.

“The first one went out in January 1998, which makes me feel old just saying it, but we’ve still managed to retain our audience,” says Tim, who will be back on our screens and BBC iPlayer with Give My Head Peace: Total Christmas on December 28 – “our very silly take on A Christmas Carol in which Uncle Andy ruins Christmas for everybody,” he teases – the first of four brand new instalments filmed in front of a live studio audience for the first time since 2019.

A festive scene from this year's Give My Head Peace Christmas special, Give My Head Peace: Total Christmas

“People still seem to love it: even though we’ve got older and moved with the times, the main core of those characters is still there. And the affection that the audience has for them is still amazing.

“I think that’s the main reason that we’re still at it – the public love to see these characters and what they are up to.”

Tim McGarry as Da in Give My Head Peace: Total Christmas

Indeed, with the show’s televisual roots dating even further back to 1995′s ‘one-off’ TV film Two Ceasefires & A Wedding and many of the characters having featured in the Gang’s radio sketches before that, Give My Head Peace has certainly stood the test of time.

The success of its annual stage-based spin-off, Give My Head Peace Live, a topically-informed version of the show which has been touring to packed houses for the past decade, offers further proof of the format’s enduring popularity.

It will return to the road next February, once Tim and co have actually written it.

“We’re trying to get a few days sorted before Christmas where we’ll sit down and try to get a plotline together,” admits the north Belfast comic, who chairs BBC NI’s popular topical panel show The Blame Game and co-hosts the Irish history-themed BBC radio and TV series, The Long and The Short of It.

“We do genuinely try to leave it as late as possible in order to keep the show as topical as possible. So, we’ll not write the whole thing in December or even early January. God forbid, the DUP might go back into Stormont, or there could be a general election. So we’ll wait and see.

“We’ll leave it as late as late as we can – and we have left it very late on some occasions, where the script has been delivered to the actors the day before rehearsals. We have a week of rehearsals and then we’re on a week after that.”

According to Tim, getting the show written is always the hardest part of the Give My Head Peace Live process: it’s usually a lot of fun once he and the rest of the live show’s cast – which also features Olivia Nash as Da’s long-suffering better half, Ma, Alexandra Ford as their glitzy/ditzy daughter Dympna, Oscar-winner Paddy Jenkins as loyalist Pastor Begbie and recent recruit Ciaran Nolan as his sidekick, Sandy – are up and running on the road.

Give My Head Peace Live is back (l-r): Alexandra Ford (Dympna), Damon Quinn (Cal), Olivia Nash (Ma), Tim McGarry (Da), Ciaran Nolan (Sandy), Michael McDowell (Billy) and Paddy Jenkins (Pastor Begbie)

“It’s a pain in the backside now, but once it’s written and we get the first couple of shows under our belts, we genuinely have a ball,” he tells me.

“There’s three of us, Damon, Michael and myself, who do all the writing, and I’m the worrier. Every year I go, ‘it’s no good, it’s no good’ – and then we do the first one and I go, ‘oh it’s brilliant, we’re alright’.

“We go all around the country and sell-out virtually everywhere we go.”

Of course, despite Tim’s tendency to stress, a decade of performing together and 25 years of TV work besides means that slipping back into these characters and their dynamics has become second-nature to the core cast.

“We know each other so well, and the characters are very well established,” he admits.

Give My Head Peace

“We also try to spread the parts as evenly as we can, so that everybody gets a wee turn, and I do a bit of stand-up in the middle as well, so it’s not quite a full hour-and-a-half play.

“We have a nice build-up and then we go all around the country, including up to Derry for three nights [March 14 to 16 at Millennium Forum], and finish off with 10 shows at the Grand Opera House [March 23 to 30] in Belfast.

“It will be lovely to get back there, because it’s just such a lovely theatre.”

As mentioned, the show now has an Oscar-winning performer in its cast: Paddy Jenkins, who won for his role in 2023′s Best Short Film, An Irish Goodbye, is actually the second Give My Head Peace alumni to receive an Oscar nod after Damon Quinn, who was a producer on Oscar-nominated short film The Crush in 2010.

Congratulations to actor Paddy Jenkins and his wife Geraldine from Falls Bowling Club in West Belfast afte Paddy picked up a Oscar .Northern Ireland film An Irish Goodbye won best live action short film.Picture by Hugh Russell.

Sadly, Paddy wasn’t able to join his co-stars and directors Tom Berkeley and Ross White on the red carpet in Hollywood to celebrate their big night as he had a previous engagement closer to home.

“Poor Paddy, God love him: he could have been at the Oscars, but he was at Downpatrick Arts Centre with us instead,” chuckles Tim.

“I mean, it was a very good show, with a very lovely audience, but not quite Hollywood, LA.”

In fact, one of the new episodes of Give My Head Peace will actually feature two Oscar-winners among its cast, thanks to a special cameo from An Irish Goodbye leading man, James Martin.

“I actually knew James before he was famous via football [both men are big Cliftonville FC fans] and a couple of other things,” explains Tim, “so I was absolutely delighted for him when he won the Oscar.

“However, he has said that getting to be in Give My Head Peace is obviously the biggest highlight of his year.”

Ringo Starr Says 'Nothing Makes Me Feel Old' as He Turns 83: 'In My Head, I'm 27' (Exclusive)

The legendary drummer will celebrate his birthday on Friday with his annual Peace & Love event

give my head peace tour dates 2023

When Ringo Starr was 23, and still drumming with the Beatles , he and his bandmates opened for a young singer named Helen Shapiro. Between sets, he'd strike up conversation with her band — and can still remember a surprising revelation from their chats.

"I was talking to the band and I said, 'Well, how old are you?' And the guy says, 'I'm 40.' '40?! And you're still doing it?'" Starr recalls to PEOPLE. "Little did I know! It's far out. But that's always stuck with me."

Though he'll turn 83 on Friday, Starr says he feels nearly the same as he did in those early days , and his work reflects that; with his All-Starr band, he continues to tour, and he has also been releasing a steady stream of EPs.

"Nothing makes me feel old. In my head, I'm 27," he says. "Wisdom's a heavy word. [Getting older] is what happens, and you try and keep yourself busy."

The Grammy-winning musician will be plenty busy this week as he celebrates his birthday with his annual Peace & Love event , during which Starr encourages all of his fans to send a wave of peace and love across the globe at noon, whether it's by tossing up his signature peace sign, posting #peaceandlove on social media, or just thinking it.

Scott Robert Ritchie

Starr and his wife Barbara will be in Los Angeles for the big moment, alongside famous pals like Joe Walsh, Sheila E, Richard Marx , Mike Campbell, Diane Warren , Roy Orbison Jr., and Edgar Winter, but there also will be celebrations in cities like Tokyo, Sydney, New York, Buenos Aires and Liverpool. NASA will also help spread the message by sending a pre-recorded message from Starr into the universe.

The feel-good event dates back to 2008, when Starr was asked in an interview what he wanted fans to get him for his birthday.

"Really without thinking, I said, 'I would like them all to go, 'Peace and love,' at noon on my birthday, 7/7, seventh day of the seventh month," he says. "That's how it started. We've been doing it now for so many years. And now I've upped it a bit because I say, 'You can say peace and love or you can just think peace and love.' So any way, you're winning."

Scott Dudelson/Getty

The drummer's affinity for "peace and love" is one that stretches back to the 1960s, he says, and he jokes now that he's "more known for that and jumping jacks than the music" (He often does jumping jacks while performing on stage). For Starr, having a positive outlook on life has never been something at which he's had to work hard.

"I never felt really down," he says. "I mean, I have my moments, of course. But my spirits are high. That's all I can say, really."

Though he's been making music for more than six decades, Starr still has plenty up his sleeve. Earlier this month, fellow Beatle Paul McCartney revealed that they'll be releasing a new song using John Lennon's vocals , which have been pulled from an old demo.

Starr says the project came about with help from Get Back director Peter Jackson, who was able to isolate the late Lennon's vocals from an as-yet-unnamed recording using a machine named after Beatles roadie Mal Evans.

Bettmann/Getty

"This is absolutely John Lennon's voice, taken off, as neat as we can, a cassette. And that's all I can tell you!" he teases.

When asked if hearing Lennon sing once more following his death in 1980 was emotional, Starr says yes, and begins to reminisce on the Anthology series, a set of Beatles compilation albums released in the 1990s that featured similarly recorded, posthumous Lennon songs "Free as a Bird" and "Real Love."

"We did that in the '90s, George [Harrison], Paul and I, with the help of Jeff Lynne, who took John's voice off a cassette," he says. "Whichever way he did that, I don't know. Jeff is very… [he] dials in. And he had that job, and he was producing. When we did those two tracks, then we got to the third one, we felt we'd done enough, and we worked on it for 10 minutes."

Even decades on, Starr still seems in awe of the legacy left behind by the Beatles.

"There's an interview of the four of us — Paul was going to write songs, George was going to have a garage, and I was going to have a hairdresser. We thought that's what we'd be doing, and it would last three or four years, but it lasted eight," he says, adding in what may be the understatement of the century, "and we did a lot of great tracks."

Paul Archuleta/FilmMagic

While fans will have to wait a bit longer for more information on the forthcoming Beatles project, they'll get a taste this November, when both Starr and McCartney team up with Peter Frampton and Mick Fleetwood for a new version of "Let It Be" on Dolly Parton 's new album Rockstar .

While Starr says he doesn't have any specific collaborations in mind as to who he'd like to work with next, he's open to ideas.

"I can be surprised," he says. "I mean, I'm on a lot of people's records. I like to do it for my friends. But sometimes people take a chance. Now I'll be inundated! No, I only do my friends [laughs]. I play the drums and then we put them on the track, and we send it back. This was what we did to Dolly's. Use me or lose me!"

He adds that he's a fan of the Los Angeles-based radio station 88.5, on which he relies to expose him to new artists.

"I'm not naming anybody because I just like to listen to them, but there are several great bands out there, girl singers out there," he says of new artists. "I mean, the biggest star in the world, Taylor . We used to meet her when she was like, 5, at the Grammys with her mother. And the beat goes on."

He continues: "That's what's great. We're blessed, as the Beatles, because each generation has a listen to us. They see, 'What does that mean to those guys?' So we're still selling records, can you believe it? And we're still remastering them, and we're still putting them in different orders and putting out outtakes. Life is good."

For the meantime, though, he's focused on his birthday — which, yes, will include one (just one!) bite of birthday cake.

"In Liverpool, you have to have a piece of the cake. I have a forkful, and that's because I have to do it. It's tradition," he says. "I'm trying to be totally sugar-free, but that's impossible."
