It’s the final day on the Fred Olsen VIP fam cruise, with agents expressing their gratitude for what has been a memorable 10 days.

The day began with an exclusive chat with the Borealis entertainment team, who explained the work that goes into putting on the incredible shows, night after night.

Following this, some of the group went for a sumptuous afternoon tea, and then took part in a fun-filled treasure hunt around the ship.

Speaking today, agents have been keen to stress their sadness at the trip coming to an end, but also their thanks to Fred Olsen and fellow shipmates for creating a “special” experience.

Brogan Doyle, Fred Holidays marketing and creative design executive, says the tour with the entertainment team made her feel like a “real VIP”.

“It was great to hear from them about their experiences and to see how the amazing shows all come together.”

Lincolnshire Coop Travel’s Lisette Barnes says: “I don’t want our journey to end. It has been an amazing experience.

“Thank you to the Fred Olsen team – they have gone over and above to make our cruise special.

“Every member of crew has been so kind and thoughtful. They will go that extra mile for you, no matter what the request is. It has surpassed my expectations in every way.”

Fred Olsen Travel assistant manager Tom Holland echoes Barnes’ comments, explaining: “Sadly our Fred Olsen journey is coming to an end.

“Today was such a relaxing day, with some more behind-the-scenes encounters and fun activities. This included looking around backstage, which provided an insight into how hard working the entertainment team is.

“We also got to run around the ship for a treasure hunt, and in the afternoon were treated to a food and wine pairing experience with the resident sommelier.

“I will be ending the day with a delicious meal in Vasco with a big smile on my face and a tear in my heart.”

Holland adds that the Fred Olsen team and other agents on board have “made this such a special and memorable trip… we arrived as strangers but will be leaving as friends.”

Fred Olsen VIP voyage: Going above and beyond

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines VIP fam trip

Borealis arrives in Tórshavn for a bonus port of call, as Fred Olsen Cruise Lines once again demonstrates its commitment to going above and beyond for its guests.

Agents on Fred Olsen’s VIP fam trip today explored the capital city of the Faroe Islands.

The stop in Tórshavn was quickly arranged by the cruise line following the cancellation of the previous port, Seyðisfjörður, due to bad weather.

However, this is not some sort of special treatment – it simply encapsulates how Fred Olsen treats all its guests.

The group walked through the old town, spotting many quirky sights along the way, including the wooden grass-roofed houses.

As Fred Olsen Travel assistant manager Tom Holland puts its: “I love it when an unfortunate turn of events turns into something positive.

“The whole Fred Olsen team has pulled together to organise fun activities. Yesterday, we had dinner in Colours & Tastes, one of the speciality restaurants.

“The cuisine was exquisite. In my opinion it was better than what I’ve experienced with some high-end luxury cruise lines. And then, today, we were lucky enough to wake up in Tórshavn.

“A big thank you to everyone at Fred Olsen. Once again, the line’s commitment to its values has been proven.”

Newmarket Holidays’ Stephanie Blackmun adds: “The sun came out for us upon our unexpected arrival in Tórshavn. What a beautiful place, with its multi-coloured houses and old town. It was great to be able to explore.”

Lisette Barnes, from Lincolnshire Coop Travel, was equally delighted with the short but sweet visit, saying: “The city is quite quirky, with its grass-covered houses and personal touches. On the plus side, the weather was kind to us, too.”

“I’m so glad we were able to visit Tórshavn,” says Fred Holidays marketing and creative design executive Brogan Doyle. “It was a lovely walk through the pretty streets and the peaceful national park. It was another wonderful day with a lovely group of people.”

Fred Olsen VIP cruise: Making agents ‘proud’

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines VIP fam trip

Despite bad weather resulting in the cancellation of the next port of call, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines quickly and efficiently makes all better again.

After departing Akureyri, Borealis has planned to dock in Seyðisfjörður, in eastern Iceland.

However, with conditions less than ideal, the captain made the decision to cancel the port of call. Cue the Fred Olsen team jumping into action to make alternative plans and put smiles on faces again.

Experts from marine wildlife charity ORCA were on hand to help guests see whales from the ship, before agents and fellow guests took part in various activities throughout the day.

And, the cherry on top came soon after, when the captain revealed that Fred Olsen has organised a new port of call for tomorrow, in Tórshavn, the capital city of the Faroe Islands.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines VIP fam trip

Stephanie Blackmun, from Newmarket Holidays, says: “Today has been all about the joy of the journey. Not being able to dock gave us the opportunity to really enjoy the on-board facilities and activities.

“It started with whale watching with ORCA, followed by arts and crafts and a fitness class. The day was packed with fun and things to do for all guests.”

Alan Witt, from Not Just Travel, explains: “I’m sure the Faroe Islands will be as fascinating as all the ports of call in Iceland.

“Because of the change in schedule, it does mean there is a chance to take part in things on board, from golf putting to line dancing. You really have to hand it to the entertainment team.”

Witt adds that the modifications to the itinerary have all been done “with the minimum of fuss”, stating: “Well done Fred Olsen, you continue to do us proud.”

Fred Holidays marketing and creative design executive Brogan Doyle adds: “Spotting whales from the ship at breakfast time was a highlight for sure. We had the perfect view of them from the ship.

“The crew have been so fast to make all these changes and ensure an exciting day at sea.”

Even when plans change, the @FredOlsenCruise team is there to make all better again. Our port of call Seyðisfjörður has been canx due to bad weather, but the show must go on – more whale watching and activities planned for the day. #VIPIcelandOlsenWay pic.twitter.com/ceLzbRg91p — Cruise Trade News (@cruisetradenews) June 24, 2022

Fred Olsen VIP fam trip: ‘Maritime is in the line’s DNA’

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines VIP fam trip

Akureyri plays hosts to travel agents on yet another fun-filled and adventurous day on the Fred Olsen VIP cruise in Iceland.

Sailing from Ísafjörður, Fred Olsen’s Borealis and its guests have spent the day in the city of Akureyri, located in the northern part of the land of fire and ice.

Due to some inclement weather, an arranged RIB tour that had been planned to give guests the chance to see the local wildlife had to be called off.

Nonetheless, the quick-thinking and helpful Fred Olsen team soon calmed any worried souls by organising an alternative excursion to spot whales, demonstrating that even when things don’t go to plan, the line has the ideal solution.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines VIP fam trip

Kevin Reeves from Cruise 118 says: “Maritime is truly in Fred Olsen’s DNA, and the cruise line proved that this morning.

“Our pre-booked RIB tour had to be cancelled because of bad weather. However, before we knew it, the team on board had booked us on to a larger boat to enable us to go out and see the whales.”

Newmarket Holidays’ Stephanie Blackmun adds: “What a great day out watching wildlife in their natural habitats.

“We were lucky to see a humpback whale and puffins – all the things you hope to see when in Iceland. It was magical and something I’ll never forget.”

Alan Witt, from Not Just Travel, was particularly looking forward to the day in Akureyri and says it “did not disappoint”.

“We saw humpback whales appear and dive back down numerous times,” he adds. “It was a wonderful excursion with great commentary throughout. The lovely, warm clothes provided also made this must-do trip extra special.”

Linda Thomson, from Connoisseur Travel Services, explains: “From our boat we saw whales and several types of seabird. Boy was it cold, but it was a memorable excursion.”

Fred Olsen Travel assistant manager Tom Holland says he is thankful to Fred Olsen for helping him to tick off a bucket-list moment.

“As with all wildlife, you are never guaranteed to see anything, but our tour guide was determined to make it happen and we kept sailing until we finally saw what we had come to see.

“The excursion included the use of thermal suits and blankets, which proved they care about our welfare.”

Fred Olsen VIP fam: The joy of the journey

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines VIP fam trip

Ísafjörður – the second port of call in Iceland – has provided agents the opportunity to take in the joy of the journey.

After departing Reykjavík, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines’ Borealis has sailed to the town of Ísafjörður in the Westfjords region.

Arriving early, guests woke to dramatic scenery and a peaceful stillness, before setting off for the Secluded Valley Life excursion. The group met Christian, a local farmer, and his family, and enjoyed homemade cake and fresh coffee.

With no other tourists in sight, the local guide, Gunnar, also explained more about the community and how people work together, as one, for the betterment of everyone.

This visit again underlines the smaller is better ethos of Fred Olsen, as well as the travellers, not tourists Olsen Way principle, as seen in Reykjavík yesterday (21 June).

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines VIP fam trip

Stephanie Blackmun, from Newmarket Holidays, says : “I woke up today and what a view I had.

“Having seen a larger cruise ship at tender, it is clear to see that smaller ships are better. It was wonderful to meet a local farming family and see how the community pulls together and takes inspiration from nature.”

Lincolnshire Coop Travel’s Lisette Barnes says: “The joy of the journey has certainly continued.

“The excursion did not disappoint – Iceland definitely takes your breath away. The trip was so interesting and the views were just spectacular.”

For Fred Olsen Travel assistant manager Tom Holland, the day in Ísafjörður has been his favourite to date. “We certainly got the Olsen Way shore excursion experience.

“We docked in the heart of this quaint little town with no need for a shuttle. We then took a scenic drive through the beautiful fjords, with endless green valleys and waterfalls in sight.”

Kevin Reeves adds: “What Fred Olsen misses out on in terms of bells and whistles, it makes up for it with heart and soul. You can’t buy that.”

Fred Olsen VIP cruise: ‘Guests are travellers, not tourists’

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines VIP fam trip

In Reykjavík, travel agents have experienced a fundamental Olsen Way principle – that Fred Olsen guests are travellers, more than tourists.

With almost a full day to explore the wonders of Reykjavík and the surrounding areas, agents on the VIP fam have today seen how Fred Olsen provides meaningful excursions that bring every destination to life.

These carefully curated tours take guests deeper, into the heart of local life.

Newmarket Holidays’ Stephanie Blackmun, who took part in the Geothermal Landscapes of Iceland tour, says: “It was so lovely to go ashore with a small number of guests and like-minded people.

“We learnt about geothermal energy and how hot water and electricity are produced.

“It was also great to see the hot springs and learn how the people of Iceland used these to cook rye bread and eggs. However, the best thing for me was walking through the Lava Tunnel; it’s something I will never forget.”

Appleby Travel’s Alice Hook, who was also on the same excursion, agrees, explaining: “The geothermal station was fascinating and the Lava Tunnel was a huge highlight.

“The colour of the lava on the ceiling was so bright orange it could have still been flowing, and the tour guide told a wonderful story about this.”

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines VIP fam trip

Other agents joined the Golden Circle and Hidden Gems tour. Linda Thomson, from Connoisseur Travel Services, adds: “As this is my first time in Iceland, I was looking forward to seeing what makes the country famous – I wasn’t disappointed.

“The geysir was an amazing feat of nature and the power of the Gullfoss waterfall was simply incredible.”

According to Kevin Reeves from Cruise 118: “The Fred Olsen experience is different to other cruise lines because it provides local, hand-crafted excursions.

“For example, guests don’t just go for ice cream, rather they see how it is made and speak to the people who make it.”

Fred Holidays marketing and creative design executive Brogan Doyle praises the knowledgeable tour guides and says: “We got to see Iceland as a traveller, rather than a tourist.

“There were special touches, such as visiting a family-run tomato farm with a tasting and story of the business.”

Lisette Barnes, from Lincolnshire Coop Travel, speaks of her delight at seeing the natural wonders of the country and focuses on the “attention to detail” throughout the Golden Circle excursion – “it was brilliant from start to finish”, she says.

Fred Olsen fam cruise: ‘Every guest is treated like a VIP’

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines VIP fam trip

As Borealis nears Reykjavík for its first port of call in Iceland on the Fred Olsen VIP fam, travel agents have today toured the cabins on board and been given a special insight into the Olsen Way.

From the Olsen Suite right through to the interior, single occupancy cabins, Fred Olsen welcomed agents to view the accommodation to showcase that no matter what grade a guest books, style and quality runs throughout the ship.

After the tour, members of the Fred Olsen team spoke in detail about the Olsen Way principles and how the brand is evolving.

Not Just Travel’s Alan Witt explains: “Even in the single occupancy cabins, there’s more space than you would expect. You don’t get the feeling of claustrophobia. There are also lovely colour schemes throughout. It’s beautiful accommodation.”

Kevin Reeves, from Cruise 118, says: “There is one class of guest, everyone on board is a VIP and all guests are treated equally.

“I was surprised at the space [in the cabins]. The Olsen Suite and Premier Suites were amazing, in particular, with a real sense of luxury.”

As Fred Olsen says, the pause in operations during the pandemic gave the cruise line time to reflect and expand and improve on what it has done so successfully for decades.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines VIP fam trip, Olsen Way

The 10 Olsen Way principles (which can be viewed at the top of this page) send a clear message about all that makes the brand stand out among the crowd.

From its hand-crafted, not mass produced, itineraries, to the belief that smaller is better, taking guests to hidden-gem ports of call, and the joy of the journey, with painstaking attention paid to every detail – agents have tangible assets and a brand identity they can use when talking to clients.

The proof, as they say, is in the pudding. Since restarting operations, Fred Olsen has seen an increase of 50 per cent in new-to-brand guests.

Come 2023, the line will also introduce its Journey Navigators concept, with nature scouts, culture curators, maritime guides and entertainment hosts joining guests on board to enhance the experience.

Stephanie Blackmun, from Newmarket Holidays, believes that the line has succeeded in creating a sense of family, saying: “People are guests, not customers. Sailing with Fred Olsen is like coming home and holidaying with friends.”

Witt adds: “The line truly does cater for all. I think Fred Olsen has certainly changed [in recent years].”

Fred Olsen VIP fam: The Olsen Way learning continues

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines VIP fam trip

On the first full sea day on the VIP fam cruise, travel agents are continuing their learning journey.

Following the unique access provided to agents on day two with exclusive cooking demonstrations, today the group joined officers on Borealis’ bridge to discover the highly skilled work that goes into navigating the ship and ensuring a smooth and safe sailing for all on board.

This was designed to showcase how maritime is in Fred Olsen’s DNA – another fundamental Olsen Way principle.

Alongside this, agents have been able to dine in Vasco, one of the ship’s speciality restaurants, serving authentic Goan cuisine.

Stephanie Blackmun, from Newmarket Holidays, explains: “Speciality dining at Vasco did not disappoint. I will highly recommend this to our customers.

“The food was divine and it’s a great place for a special occasion – it took me back to my holiday in Goa. It’s a fine dining experience at a fraction of the cost [from £10pp].”

Blackmun also highlights the crew on board Borealis , adding: “They are genuinely interested in you – it doesn’t feel forced in any way. It makes a massive difference. One you experience it for yourself, you believe in it.”

As for the ship itself, others are keen to stress the level of quality that runs throughout everything on board.

Lisette Barnes says: “It’s more contemporary [than I thought it would be]. It’s not ‘stuffy’, it feels like a Fred Olsen ship. If it’s a younger guest, I’d sell them Fred Olsen for the itineraries.”

Appleby Travel’s Alice Hook says: “Everyone on board can have a difference experience, as there is terrific variety in things to do.”

Cruise 118 sales concierge Kevin Reeves agrees, stating: “ Borealis has the small-ship feel, but Fred Olsen has not compromised with what’s available on board.”

Fred Olsen VIP fam: The learning journey begins

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines VIP fam trip

It’s day two on board Borealis , and time for the learning to begin.

Travel agents today arrived in Belfast on the first full day of Fred Olsen Cruise Lines’ VIP fam trip to Iceland.

After spending a couple of hours exploring the city of Belfast, the group joined an exclusive cooking demonstration, making pastries and decorating cakes, to learn about some key Olsen Way principles.

Following this, we were treated to a menu briefing, to understand the meticulous work that goes into catering for all tastes and passengers’ dietary requirements.

As Fred Olsen as a brand explains, this is all about attention to detail, making the guest experience personal to each and every guest, and showcasing that everything that happens on board relates back to one key message: it’s all about the people.

Cruise 118’s Kevin Reeves says: “We decorated cakes, made trifles and had a fun time. I was surprised by the measures the senior team go to to ensure the crew get sufficient rest periods between work to keep them happy, meaning they can keep us happy.”

Speaking at the menu briefing, Fred Olsen Travel assistant manager Tom Holland was highly complimentary about the quality of food, saying: “It’s some of the best food I’ve had on board a ship. I’d put it up there with the likes of Oceania Cruises.”

Fred Holidays marketing and creative design executive Brogan Doyle adds: “I feel like I’ve experienced the Olsen Way in such a short space of time.

“We have been lucky enough to take part in a food demonstration and it was such a personalised experience – it felt special to be part of it.

“It was great to hear from the chefs and understand the incredible amount of work that goes into each day. They really do make it all about the people.”

Alan Witt, from Not Just Travel, explains: “I saw how much work the chefs and waiting staff put it.

“They will steer guests through the menus and adapt a recipe wherever they can, to ensure guests get a wonderful selection of dishes. It’a all done with a friendly smile.”

‘We can’t wait to experience the Olsen Way’: Agents look forward to Fred Olsen fam

Fred Olsen fam trip Iceland

Travel agents preparing to join the Fred Olsen Cruise Lines Iceland 2022 fam trip have spoken of their excitement at experiencing what the line has to offer.

The VIP educational trip will see eight agents join the cruise line for a special cruise to Iceland, with a strong focus on learning about the product and the Olsen Way.

Cruise Trade News will be on board to report exclusively on the event.

Stephanie Blackmun Newmarket Holidays, Fred Olsen fam

Newmarket Holidays’ Stephanie Blackmun said: “I have never cruised [on an ocean ship], so I am very excited to experience my first one with Fred Olsen.

“We at Newmarket Holidays started selling Fred Olsen cruises to our customers during the pandemic, and it was great to hear so many customers looking forward to the opportunity to sail the Olsen Way.

“I am looking forward to seeing all that the ship has to offer our customers. I’ve have heard so many great things about the staff on board, the restaurants and the entertainment.

“In terms of what I am hoping to take away with me, that would be being able to bring sailing with Fred Olsen to life by talking about my own personal experience on board to our customers and also to my team.”

Cruise 118's Kevin Reeves

Fred Olsen Travel assistant manager Tom Holland added he was “curious to know what the entertainment is like” on board, and is hoping “to spot whales and puffins” during the cruise.

“It will be good to get the small-ship experience,” he said. “The best thing is I will get to share this with my current and new customers.

“The itinerary is amazing and I have always wanted to go to Iceland.”

Cruise 118 sales concierge Kevin Reeves said his initial reaction upon hearing the news that he had won a place on the trip was: “Wow, look at that itinerary… this is going to be amazing.”

“I want to experience the Olsen Way,” he explained. “Customers who sail with Fred Olsen, stay with Fred Olsen – there must be a reason for such loyalty.”

Alan Witt, from Not Just Travel, said: “I am lucky to have cruised on Balmoral about 15 years ago, and really enjoyed the fact that the ship’s size means you bump into the same people from time to time and have a chat.

“That’s a real selling point for me, as I know a lot of my customers like that intimacy as well.

Alan Witt, Not Just Travel Fred Olsen

“In the past I have maybe pigeon-holed customers into either being a big ship or small ship customer. However, I try not to do that now, and instead focus on the itineraries and the ports of call, as that can be the key to getting the sale.

“I think Fred Olsen has made some real changes in the past few years –  I can see a real identity in the ships now.”

Witt added: “I am also looking forward to the business session, as I like to share ideas and thoughts. Social media is my achilles heel so hopefully I will get some tips from others in the group.”

For Alice Hook, from Appleby Travel, a key highlight will be dining on Borealis, particularly the new speciality restaurants. She is also excited about sharing her shore excursion experiences with clients.

Brogan Doyle, Fred Olsen fam trip

Fred Holidays marketing and creative design executive Brogan Doyle said that the Iceland fam trip will be her first ocean cruise experience.

“I am intrigued to see how amazing the dining and food is as I have heard it is really lovely and to see all of the sights Iceland has to offer,” she said.

“I hope that from this cruise educational, I am able to learn all of the key selling points to market the brand.”

Shore excursion prices

I'm interested to know, from anybody who has got information about shore excursions recently, what the cost of shore excursions is like now - does it seem to be higher because of a captive audience, or lower because they will probably sell more as it is the only way to go ashore?

We visited The Isles of Scilly with Fred last Wednesday and must say our excursion to Tresco Abbey Gardens was both excellent and also excellent value.  The cost was £35, and we also got a 5% gold level Oceans discount as a pre booked tour.  The entrance fee is £15 (£14 for concessions) and if we had been tendered to St Mary's (as is normally the case), or been there on a hotel holiday, we would have also needed to have paid £12pp for the return inter Island ferry to Tresco.

Once we arrived on Tresco, we were directed to the route to the gardens, which was about a 15 minute walk.  We were then given a map an allowed to just go off on our own to explore the gardens and/or also visit the coffee shop, before meeting at the Tresco boat pier two hours later. The other hour of our 3 hour trip was taken up by the boat rides there and back as well as the walk to the gardens from the pier.  Scilly is beautiful.

Thanks for this information. My husband just asked me this since it doesn't seem clear from their website.

They are extortionate, in my view. £90 for a panoramic tour of Belfast and £130 for a town walk are but examples of what we have had to pay to get off board and they were not the most expensive.

Fred has not visited Belfast recently, so I assume you are referring to other cruise lines rather than Fred.  We paid £35 for a 3 hour walk in Falmouth last week on Fred and were only charged £32 for a guided walk in Scilly, which included refreshments, though the weather was not suitable for tendering, so that was refunded the day we should have visited.  Other Fred prices included £35 for a panoramic tour in Portsmouth which also allowed a fair bit of time out of the coach.  Some further afield ones (that included what would be high admission charges), cost more, but nothing like the prices you are suggesting, nor have I ever seen those sort of prices on a British cruise line, though I know the US based lines rack the prices up and also quote in $ which makes them seem more expensive to us - can I ask where you have got those prices from please?

We've pre-booked our excursions for Belfast "Giant's Causeway" £69pp after loyalty discount

Falmouth "Lost Gardens of Heligan" £68pp no discount for this tour.

Worth ringing shore excursion department regards no loyalty discount for the Falmouth tour.  That is the price in our tour book for last week and it did not have the Oceans discount taken into account.  We got a discount for our Tresco trip on our July cruise after ringing them, but it took a while to come through.  It seems their system was not taking the discount off the prices as it should have done.  We also got the impression they may not bother to refund the discount if not requested, though not really sure about that, it is just a hunch we had after speaking with them.

The only reason you should not get a discount is if you had booked the cruise on a saver fare, or if a discount was already taken off the prices you have been given - the tour books normally have the discount deducted from prices shown, but then they are usually odd amounts, not round pounds.

Thanks for your reply,  I did think it was strange only getting the discount on one trip.

Didn't book a saver fare as we wanted to choose our cabin and dining

Cool Cruiser

Having just seen the shore excursions and prices for the Fred Olsen Iceland trip in August, wondering if anyone else thinks the charges are exceptionally high this year eg a 4 hour trip to the Blue Lagoon is £165 per person or a 3.5 hour hike towards Valagil £125 each! I wouldn't mind forking out if it was just for a couple of us, but taking extended family and therefore paying over £1000 for a half-day excursion seems excessive and like we're being fleeced. FO will ultimately lose out in our case as will source our own trips and arrange our own hikes, but feel like they're taking advantage when we've already paid substantially more than the current listed price for similar cabins and was wondeirng what others views were.

Even before Covid, Fred's prices were off-putting because the headline price was later inflated with all manner of extras. We cruised the Corinth Canal with Fred in 2019. It was a nice trip but expensive in a balcony cabin. The additional price of drinks, "gratuities" and Wi-Fi and suchlike then significantly added to the basic cost.

The same trip in the same cabin in 2024 would now cost us more than twice as much. By the time we added all manner of other costs... including excursions, in our opinion, the price would be exorbitant.

Fred's cruises lost over £25,000,000 in the first three months of this year. It looks as if lots of once loyal FOCLs customers, like ourselves, aren't as attracted to the brand as they once were and that numbers on Fred's cruises are really low.

Fred seems to be beginning to get the message. He recently commissioned an independent report into what people thought of his brand. But the problem is... once people are put off... it's really hard to regain their trust and get them back on board again.

We used to do four or five cruises with Fred every year. Since Fred was reluctant to refund us promptly when we chose to have our deposit back at the beginning of covid we've not booked another cruise with him.

The main reason is that we've been comparing the market.  We have to pull up a spreadsheet to calculate the real price of what Fred's advertising. Once we move up to "Freedom" fare, add the Gratuities, the essential Wi-Fi and so on... the price is often eyewatering compared with brighter, newer, better ships being run by Fred's competitors.

We had originally been attracted to a similar Fred cruise to your one... but ten we worked out that in a balcony cabin it would cost us about £1,000 a day. By comparison with three other cruise lines... all visiting the same areas at about the same time... Fred was by far the most expensive. We opted for a different line that we'd used before. We believe that the food, entertainment, service and accommodation is better for us than what Fred's offering.

That's just our personal opinion... we've taken our choice and paid our money... and we feel much better about the choice having done our own research and worked out the real prices.

Iceland is a very expensive country. The cheapest entry to the Blue Lagoon is about £52 pp by itself and a return coach from Reykjavik to Blue Lagoon is just under £40pp if you were doing it youself so thats £90 and of course I don't know if you had any other extras included such as food or drink. Agree £165 vs £90 seems steep if they are comparable experiences.

Yes I appreciate the high cost in Iceland. But it was more for things like £125 for a hike with no entrance fees to pay, yes a guide but that divided between however many in the group would be minimal compared to the end cost being charged to user... Comparable packages from local tour operators (which probably are who FO are using as local suppliers anyway) charge much more reasonable prices including coach, guide, entrance fees etc and it works out about 1/3 - 1/2 cheaper so the upsell from FO I therefore feel is unreasonable. Of course they give you all the 'only the ship's tours guarantee to get you back to the ship in time' etc but I doubt the local operators will fail to deliver you back in time unless there's a real emergency. But I suppose like you said FO are trying to recoup some of their lost revenue so feel justified in charging such high prices. For us though it has meant we simply looked elsewhere for shore excursion providers whereas ordinarily we would have supported FO if they'd been less pleonectic. We have tried other cruise operators but like the smaller size of ship and the gentler pace of FO so will stick with them for now, and dream of one day affording the more luxurious small ship operators with everything thrown in!

2 hours ago, T4TS said: I suppose like you said FO are trying to recoup some of their lost revenue

Fred's problem is that he's lost 1,000's of loyal, long-term customers and was doing so even before Covid. The idea of charging those who do board a small fortune will only drive more people away.

Exactly that. I can get a suite with a butler, drinks package, WiFi and tips for the same as a balcony on Fred.

Add to that the premium they always seem to add  for travel from the North and it is off putting. The journey to Southampton is almost worthwhile given the savings and more inclusive package offered.

We we’re looking at a cruise and a very similar one from Dover is about 30% less. I accept that there is more fuel when going South from Rosyth but it never seems to work the other way for northern cruises. The (generally) older cruisers who cant travel to Southampton will just have to live with the prices but younger folks will just jump in a car, plain or train.

I have always enjoyed our cruises on Fred but the prices are now getting just a bit much by comparison.

For the first time ever we didn't do any tour excursions they were ridiculously  expensive.

Last year while on Borealis you had to do an excursion to get off the ship but not this year but the difference in price was much higher for this year.  When they became available on line I was sure they had made a mistake. I looked out last years tours for Belfast we went to the Giants Causeway which we enjoyed but this year the exact excursion was almost £60pp higher we were thinking of going to the Titanic Experience and it was grossly inflated as well.

We have just returned from an Ambassador cruise which visited Rekjavik and price for The Blue Lagoon trip was much the same, perhaps exactly the same, but I do not have a copy of the tours and prices that were only online.  We did look at that one as it is somewhere we have not been, but decided to give it a miss at those prices.  As stated Iceland is very expensive and getting more so from what we saw.  All ship's tours are likely to be the same, (US brands usually higher again), so perhaps worth looking elswhere (though direct booking prices have risen a lot compared to pre-Covid prices as well), but always the disadvantages, given the possibility the ship will not dock for some reason etc., so best to check you could cancel at short notice and will get back in time.  Difficult decision, though perhaps less risk if docked overnight.  Their are hot spring bathing pools in the city of Reyjavik, which may be of interest to you - one is walkable from the cruise terminal and another near the Cathedral.  Details of those can be found on line.

You may find the ports of call section of use, as well as Trip Advisor forums/review pages.

Thanks for the replies. We are hoping to go to some other baths on our trip instead of the actual Blue Lagoon as have been told they'll be less busy, less touristy/ more authentic and gives you the same type of bathing experience with a landscape view for less cost. The last time we tried to cruise on FO to Iceland the itinerary included 2 days in Reyjavik which was much more sensible and attractive to us. When that was cancelled and they offered an alternative I was really disappointed the itinerary only included 1 day in Reyjavik and overall therefore a 1 day shorter sailing but asked a lot more for the trip. Such a shame that they are losing their loyal customer-base, I hope they can turn things round and the old FO charm can return. Wish there was more choice to cruise out of Scotland direct, especially now with the farce of flying, but at least alternatives are out there with Ambassador/ reincarnated CMV returning to regional ports next year.

We never do any excursions.  Always prefer to DIY wherever we go.

Cruise to Iceland – the land of fire & ice

Author: Daniel Edward

Published on: 10 April 2024

Updated on: 11 April 2024

A cruise to Iceland is the perfect voyage to try small-ship specialist Fred. Olsen

There are few places around the world where nature showcases its most awe-inspiring and dramatic facets as much as in Iceland. This northern Atlantic island is bursting with enthralling contrasts – thick verdant moss, next to stark volcanic rock. Steaming geothermal hotspots, next to snow fields that reach for what seems forever. And a cruise to Iceland is a great chance to experience Fred. Olsen , a cruise line known for its smaller ships, which enjoy unrivalled access to some of the most interesting places on earth. Fred. Olsen sails from the UK, with itineraries reaching all corners of the globe, from the Caribbean and Latin America to European hotspots and boutique destinations. The line’s Iceland itineraries showcase its small-ship flair for calling in lesser-known ports that most cruisers miss due to the ever-increasing size of mega-ships. Of course, you’ll still visit Reykjavik – the capital – but stops in the less-touristy spots of Akureyri and Isafjordur for opportunities to really immerse yourself in local culture and traditions.

Highlights of Iceland

Visiting Iceland by ship is one of the best ways to approach this diverse, volcanic vista. The island, quite literally bubbling with geothermal energy, is home to impressive geysers, glaciers and waterfalls.

One of the most popular things to do when visiting the country of fire and ice is to indulge in a spa day at the Blue Lagoon – a vast naturally heated lagoon pool, which has medicinal qualities thanks to the high silicone content in the water. Ship excursions can take you to the Blue Lagoon for a day trip, or to other geothermal spas if you want to try some of the alternatives.

Whale watching is also a hugely popular activity in the region, and Fred. Olsen has teamed up with ORCA who provide experts to sail onboard with you and guide your experience of whale and dolphin spotting from the ship. Not only does this partnership enrich your sailing experience, it also supports scientific research and ORCA’s conservation efforts.

Speaking of animals, Iceland is full of animal life to meet and interact with. Excursions include fishing and horse-riding options, while those with an interest in mythical creatures will have plenty of chances to get up close and personal with trolls and elves.

At night, Iceland is an ideal spot to witness the magnificent Northern Lights, and there’s nowhere better to observe this natural phenomenon than from the open deck of a Fred. Olsen ship, away from the light pollution of land. If the Northern Lights make an appearance, you’ll be in the best position for an incredible photo.

From late Autumn into winter, Iceland is an ideal spot to witness the magnificent Northern Lights, and there’s nowhere better to observe this natural phenomenon than from the open deck of a Fred. Olsen ship, away from the light pollution of land. However, for an authentic Northern Lights experience we recommend visiting Northern Norway in winter when the lights are at their brightest, and with the best chance of being spotted.

Fred. Olsen Iceland itineraries

Ready to head off soon? Sail from Southampton on May 14, 2024 for an 11-night whale watching and volcanic vistas cruise on Borealis . You’ll be joined onboard by Reykjavik local Sólveig Dagmar Þórisdóttir, who will enrich your experience with authentic local insights throughout. If northern England departure ports are more convenient for you, Fred. Olsen offers voyages departing from Liverpool and Newcastle, in addition to those from the South Coast.

Step onboard Bolette in Liverpool for a nine-night cruise to Iceland , departing September 12, 2024. Wasting no time to get into the meat of the voyage, Bolette steams up north and introduces you to Reykjavik before taking you on a journey around the northern coast of Iceland, where you’ll spend several days in the Arctic Circle.

Customer Care

My husband and I had an accident on the escalator joining the ship. Passengers were being called too quickly and a crowd built up at the top. The people in front of us couldn't step off the escalator and we all ended up falling. My husband hurt his wrist and I grazed by shins and bruised my knee. Nobody was interested. No accident report. No apology. Reported to Customer Services but they were not interested either. After completing the end of cruise review I was told someone would telephone me. They didn't. Poor customer relations Fred Olsen. Also, small ships get into smaller ports? Not true, they still anchor off the coast and use tenders to take passengers ashore, which can be uncomfortable in windy weather.

The staff are wonderful Food and service fantastic. Nothing is too much trouble. We felt so spoilt. Upset though,as I have questioned an incident that happened to me. On the ship no one cared. No one checked up on me. Since being home the same. A month now. Customer relations have not been in touch. Despite me contacting them. Lack of care after an accident is worrying 😟 I guess.

A cruise line that really looks after you

Fred Olsen staff - well trained and efficient - treat guests with great respect.Nothing is too much trouble.Bollette is beautiful.A full and enjoyable daily programme (with first rate lectures) and fun evening entertainment. To top it all the food is excellent. Our only reservation - the queues on disembarkation in Liverpool for those leaving their cars at Q Park and waiting for the shuttle minibuses were overlong (50 minutes). Elderly/disabled passengers had to stand for lengthy periods.Suggest at least 4 (or more) minibuses needed to speed the process.

Reply from Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines

Good afternoon Muriel Thank you for taking the time to share your valuable feedback with us, following your recent cruise on board Bolette. I was pleased to read that you enjoyed the food, entertainment and the service from our wonderful crew. We hope to welcome you back on board in the near future. Kind regards, Stuart Guest Relations

Friendly, conscientious and caring.

The staff make the experience special, nothing is too much trouble for them. The food is superb on Bolette and dietary requirements are met. Smaller ships mean that smaller ports can be visited. We always travel with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines and have done for many years.

Good morning Thank you for your kind comments and we were delighted to learn how much you enjoyed your cruise on board Bolette. We thank you for your loyal support and hope to welcome you back on board in the near future. Kind regards, Stuart Guest Relations

Cruising how it should be

We've always enjoyed our cruises with Fred Olsen. It's homely and comfortable yet still offers an excellent level of luxury. The service is second to none, all of the staff, without exception are friendly, polite and professional. There are no night clubs, skating rinks, casinos etc or thousands of people milling around just good , old fashioned fabulous cruising with like-minded people.

Date of experience : 19 June 2023

Wonderful staff

Wonderful staff, nothing too much trouble. Unfortunately the handle of my case was damaged during boarding - it was fixed with a much stronger handle very promptly without charge. Icelandic ports were stunning and the complimentary rib tour which was organised at the last minute was marvellous - just a shame more ports don't give permission for these.

How Fred Olsen can improve their star rating

One star "lost" through no fault of Fred Olsoen, but our experience was affected by only visiting 2 out of 4 original ports on the itinerary. One missed because of bad weather, the other due to a workers' strike at the port. The other star not awarded because of the system of fixed dining and the expectation by the restaurant of allocating the same table throughout the cruise. It is not perfect to always dine, for example, at a regular late time nor satisfactory to always sit with the same couple or group every night of the cruise.

Date of experience : 24 May 2024

Dear David Thank you for your comments. We are sorry for the disappointment caused due to the change of itinerary. Although these changes were due to events outside of our control, we understand how disappointing this was. Your comments regarding fixed dining and the table allocations will be shared with our management for future consideration. We do hope that you may consider a future cruise with Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. Kind regards, Stuart Guest Relations

Nothing seems too much trouble for the…

Nothing seems too much trouble for the crew on Fred Olsen ships. Within a couple if days at the most dining room staff and bar staff know you and what you like. Restaurant staff pick up on likes and dislikes and ensure you have the best of service. Cabins on Bollette and Borealis are very roomy with plenty of storage space. Intenaries are well put together and excursions give you a variety of places to visit as well as time to go it alone. The smaller number of people on board means that before long you know several new people and friendships are easily formed.

Date of experience : 30 September 2023

Food inconsistent/lack of variety

Food inconsistent/lack of variety - tea/coffee should be part of drinks package - worried about arrangements for people with disabilities (see below) After a shore visit a queue to go up the only gangway to the ship - quiet step. Five or so people without. their mobility aids standing waiting foe assistance to go aboard while crew came off. No chairs, steep gan away - they need level access if at all possible le. At least some chairs while hey wait. Quite upset about this. Crew great, entertainment great. Junior suite a disapointment.

Fred Olsen cruises is the perfect fit

We have been on two Fred Olsen cruises, both to Norway, first for the Northern Lights in Feb 2022 and then the fjords in May 2023 - we are about to go on our third, this time to the Adriatic. Fred Olsen are perfect for us, smaller ships, personal service and everything we have experienced has been 1st Class. People have suggested other Lines but we just love the experience and do not wish to cloud our opinion of cruising by switching to someone else.

Date of experience : 28 May 2023

Love cruising with Fred Olsen

Cruising with Fred Olson is a wonderful experience. The service and attention to detail provided by all crew members is second to none. The waiters in our restaurant were exceptional. Great choice of food and drink and exceptional service. Lots of outside space and communal areas but always able to find a quiet corner if we wanted to be alone. Enjoyed our destinations very much and have already booked our next cruise with Fred.

This was my 22nd cruise with Fred Olsen…

This was my 22nd cruise with Fred Olsen and as usual everything was great from the friendly, helpful staff in the office to everyone on board. The crew are brilliant, friendly, caring and helpful. The ships are clean and comfortable with a lovely country house feel. Embarkation and disembarkation are smooth and well organised. Looking forward to my next cruise with Fred Olsen.

High Standard of Service

We have sailed over 200 nights on Fred Olsen ships, mainly Balmoral and Borealis. They offer a high level of service on smaller ships which aren’t brand new but feature very comfortable cabins and activities and entertainment options. Fred’s prices are not the cheapest but good value for money compared to most other cruise lines and their “all inclusive “ charges are less than most - and sometimes included free of charge. Fred’s staff are their number one attraction. Both serving and behind the scenes we have found them always welcoming and efficient.

We’ve just returned from 5 days Scenic Scotland.

We’ve just returned from 5 days Scenic Scotland on the beautiful Boletta. Excellent food, entertainment variety was good drinks reasonable, staff charming and helpful. Only praise. We didn’t take part in any of the organised excursions. Why you may ask? Far too expensive.

Staff were extremely friendly

Staff were extremely friendly, helpful and attentive. Food was of good quality and plentiful, however, being on a late sitting limited our enjoyment as too late to engage in the shows. Late and early dining should be alternated to give everyone the opportunity to see shows. Ship is a bit dated and rooms could do with brightening up. Found the time spent in ports was too short to really enjoy the visits. Drinks deal was good but often service in bars was slow and often felt like walking into a residential home for the elderly seeing people snoozing in the high backed chairs.

Fabulous cruise line, you won’t be disappointed

We have cruised with Fred Olsen for a number of years. The crew are fabulous, always smiling and so helpful. The itineraries are varied so there is always somewhere new we want to visit. There is a good choice of food available, always something for all tastes. Their speciality restaurants are superb and gives you a chance to try something new. There are always many onboard entertainment, lectures and activities to choose from that we are never bored on sea days. And sailing from the UK is so easy compared to the hassle of flying anywhere these days. We would most definitely recommend giving Fred Olsen Cruise Lines a try, but be warned, you will get hooked.

Fabulous cruise

We enjoyed our Fred Olsen cruise very much. It’s like a big family with very friendly staff in all roles throughout the ship. We enjoy the smaller number of passengers creating a more intimate atmosphere on the ship. The captain was excellent and engaged with passengers on a very informal level and was often seen around the ship. We enjoyed the captains daily announcements too with quotes is great wisdom. Overall a great experience.

Great all round experience

Well appointed cabin, fantastic crew especially our table waiters. Plenty of space to just sit and watch the World go by but also loads to do if you want a more active day. Fred Olsen cruises are designed for adults who don't want Karaoke, water flumes, fun fairs and drunken louts swearing everywhere. They do have live music, disco and entertainment and for those that like ballroom dancing or would like to learn they have dance hosts and daily dance sessions. We have only ever cruised with Fred Olsen and having heard from friends of our age (50's/60's) about their cruises on much bigger vessels I don't think we would try any others.

First time cruisers

First time cruisers. Sooooo much easier than flying. Check in , minutes not hours! Holiday begins as soon as car is parked up. Unexpectedly wined and dined as soon as on board. Suite dreams balcony room excellent. Lovely to walk around ship on deck 7 , doing 4 circuuts to complete a mile. Quality food and drink. Staff friendly and attention to all details. Can please self as to to be alone or socialise. Shows fantastic and wildlife talks. Swimming pools warm. We were v lucky with weather , 28c in Norway. Briskale troll cars trip fantastic, but we had prefect weather to see glacier and views so well. Advise need small bag for last few items needed late pm early am before disembarking, as you put luggage outside your room by 2am. Breakfast given before early am disembarking.

Overall the usual high Fred O…but …

Overall the usual high Fred O standards:particularly the shows. But having requested a table of 6/8 I ended up at the busy edge of the dining area on a table for 4 one of whom rarely came. Boring! I have already fed back requesting better training for staff attitude to lone women guests: couples are served ahead even if my drink card has been held up first!!

Fred. Olsen Returns to Rosyth for Summer Season

  • June 29, 2024

Balmoral sailing out of Rosyth

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Balmoral kicked off its summer season from Scotland with a seven-night Norwegian Fjords cruise departing from Rosyth on June 27, according to a press release.

Clare Ward, director of product and customer service at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said: “We are delighted to have returned to Rosyth for another busy cruising schedule for summer 2024. Guests joining us can look forward to a variety of cruises on board Balmoral where they can seek out native wildlife, witness spectacular natural phenomena and immerse in the local way of life.

“Opportunities in our hand-crafted itineraries include the opportunity to sail along the size-restricted Kiel Canal, witness thundering waterfalls and spurting geysers in Iceland and see beautiful hydrangeas when they’re in bloom in the Azores.”

From June through August 2024, the Balmoral will explore the Baltic, Scottish Isles, Iceland and Portugal’s islands.

Highlights include:

  • The 11-night Life and Landscapes of Iceland cruise, departing from Rosyth on July 22, 2024.
  • The five-night Summertime Norwegian Fjords cruise, departing from Rosyth on August 2, 2024.
  • The 15-night Portugal’s Islands in Search of the Meteor Shower cruise, departing from Rosyth on August 7, 2024.
  • The one-night Mini-Cruise, departing from Rosyth on August 22, 2024.

Rob Mason, head of cruise at Capital Cruising, said: “Our cruise season is well underway across Scotland, and we are excited to welcome Fred. Olsen’s summer cruises into the Port of Rosyth.

“Sailing into Rosyth offers the perfect regional location for travelers who can depart from here and cruise directly to many brilliant destinations across Europe and further afield. This year will be our busiest cruise season on the River Forth and we are seeing cruise holidays increase in popularity in Scotland each year.

“We would encourage anyone who has not tried a cruise holiday, to book one of the many brilliant travel itineraries that cruise lines like Fred. Olsen offer.”

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ latest offer is directed at teachers. A “complimentary champagne afternoon tea” is available for those on cruises of six nights or more in July and August 2024 and 2025.

The cruise line offers five different voyage options where teachers can enjoy an afternoon boozy beverage experience.  According to Fred. Olsen , the “tea” sitting will include champagne for two. Director of Product and Customer Service for the brand, Clare Ward, suggested that the cruise is great for teachers seeking relaxation away from their young pupils.

“At Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, you won’t see us hike up our cruise prices during the school holidays, as we are not targeting ourselves towards those with young families. This makes us a great cruise line for  teachers looking for a break outside of term-time,” Ward noted.

“By choosing a Fred. Olsen cruise, you can visit multiple destinations off the beaten tourist trail, immerse in the local way of life, learn about the culture and enjoy stunning scenery, all while enjoying the comfort and on-board experience on our fleet of smaller-sized ships,” she added.

Bookings that take advantage of  the deal  need to be made through Fred. Olsen’s reservations team. Educators will need to share their TRNs, aka their teacher reference numbers. Also, to get the deal, they must state the code “TEACH245.”

How Long Are The Cruises And Where Are They Going?

The cruises range anywhere from nine to 15 days long. Destinations included the Norwegian Fjords, scenic French rivers, Iceland’s picturesque terrain, and the volcanic Azores  islands of Portugal.

A 14-night cruise on the brand’s Borealis ship revolves around the “Volcanic Islands of the Azores and Madeira.” Destinations include the Azores, Lisbon, and more. The fun activities lined up are discovering Portugal’s maritime history, seeing beautiful blue hydrangeas in the Azores, and sperm whale watching. The cruise departs and returns to Dover, UK. Prices for the experience start at around $1,500 per person.

Another unique cruise option is the “Exploring Rugged and Remote Greenland and Iceland” on a Bolette ship. Starting at a little over $2,900 per person, cruisers will experience the “wild and rugged landscapes of Iceland and Greenland.” They’ll also experience “the Inuit community tradition of kaffemik,” and “cruising of Tasermiut and Tunulliarfik fjords.” Stops include stunning destinations in Greenland and Iceland. The cruise departs from and returns to Liverpool, UK.
