Evidence of self-support

This is the one area that many interviewees miss it. Somebody else’s account statement is usually not enough these days.

This of course has made many Nigerians to decide that many embassies actually do not want our people to come to their country but collect our monies.

While this may be true to an extent, it does not prove that the embassies want to just collect money without giving visas.

It is just another fallacy which Nigerians generally believe. If you cannot prove that you can support yourself you will not get the visa.

The easiest way to do this would be to present your tax returns and/or your tax clearance certificates alongside your account statements, your professional certifications (if any), certificate of incorporation or business registration (if any), proof of address and other forms of proof of employment or business which may come in handy.

Those can be kept in a SEPARATE folder apart from the required documents as stated for the embassy interview. You can never tell, you may be asked for such documents!

Evidence of local existence

This is where being a known individual either professionally or business-wise comes into play. When you’re going abroad for a business or a professional trip and cannot prove that you are a known individual locally or professionally, then you most likely will not get the visas that are required for the trip! It is that simple! Are you a member of your town’s association?

Do you perform other non-profit functions like rotary club and such? What professional associations do you belong to?

These are the sort of things which the interviewers are always looking into. And once they detect to a certain level that you’re more or less not interested in local affairs then it would be a better idea to first build evidence of participation in local activities before applying for the visa in the first place.

Consistency

It is vital that as an applicant for a visa to another country that your story is consistent no matter what. For the second time in under a year, Nigeria has revised its COVID-19 protocols. Issued by the Nigeria Immigration Service, and valid for 90 days, it also covers visitors traveling from countries where Nigeria has no embassy or mission. Details for which nationalities qualify for a Visa on Arrival are available at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) .

The key requirement here is that someone must apply online  on your behalf from Nigeria, no earlier than 14 days before your departure date. Even when they get a Visa Approval Letter, visitors are sometimes delayed by needless formalities at the airport. It helps to have your host deal with the red tape that could surface on the ground.

Nigeria’s healthy hospitality industry is complemented by a fast-growing real estate sector. Nigerians detest it when officials "ask for a dash" (a gratuity or bribe). They might oblige on a good day, but will flatly refuse and move on at other times. Because travelers won't have the local currency (Naira) on them on arrival, they should politely decline, with a smile.

7. Have a local meet you at the airport or help negotiate taxi rates

Wherever your flight lands, it’s best to arrange in advance for a resident to pick you up or help negotiate with airport taxis. In Nigeria, bargaining is a fixture of everyday living. In addition to taxis and bus shuttles, there’s a light rail shuttle at Abuja airport that goes to the city center and terminates at the Idu Station. 

8. Expect friendly greetings and small talk  

Nigerians naturally warm up to visitors of all shades and are known to lavish greetings on guests. Either in person or on the phone, the greetings are typically small talk, and will simply be questions about how your trip was, what brings you to town, and how are your family back home. They then bid you to enjoy your stay.

Your host or guide should be able to walk you through this pleasant ritual. Every day Nigerians are excited by the sight of Westerners. They’ll usually wave at you happily, saying, “ Oyinbo , how are you?” Aside from waving back, nothing much is expected of you other than “I’m fine, thank you” or a smile.

9. Attend a Nigerian celebration in an  aso ebi

Don’t let the pervasive poverty mislead you – Nigerians are happy people who have learned to make lemonade from lemons. We hustle almost every day of our lives, but we also socialize a great deal, usually at birthday and wedding celebrations. If you’re lucky to be invited to one while you’re in town, be sure to accept and get your aso ebi  – the clothing Nigerians wear at family or social functions. Families or celebrants will choose a fabric type and design and make it available to guests for a price. Guests then have them fitted in whatever style they please and wear it on the day of the celebrations.  This experience could very well be the high point of your visit.

If you can't get an aso ebi , a traditional Nigerian dress can be made within 48–72 hours. It begins with going to get the fabric at an open market, and finding a neighborhood tailor who will sew it. Alternatively, clothes can be bought ready-made at malls and boutiques, but they will cost more.

10. Learn some pidgin

English is Nigeria’s lingua franca, and the average person you meet can hold a conversation in English. But for everyday dealings, Nigerians talk among themselves in pidgin, bridging the language divide. A good number of the expatriate community, the Asians in the main, have mastered this over the years and speak it fluently.

12. Malaria is a risk

As a traveler in Nigeria, your greatest concern should be malaria, the bane of Western visitors for decades but now treatable with an injection or drugs available over the counter at standard pharmacies.

To keep the chances of mosquito bites low, carry and use insect repellents as often as medically recommended. Better still, get medical advice before traveling or check the latest recommendations by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) on prevention and treatment. Wear long-sleeve tops and pants if you’ll be walking in forests or parks.

13. Drink bottled water

There is no reliable public water supply in most parts of the country, and the population depends largely on privately-funded sources. Outside the hotels and restaurants, you’ll find bottled water on sale almost everywhere you go – on highways and in supermarkets. They’re safe to drink if you’re outdoors and feel a sudden need to rehydrate. 

14. Chances of kidnap are low

Unless you’re venturing into remote areas, the chances of being kidnapped in a Nigerian town or city are low. Hello, there! This article will guide you through all you need on how to travel abroad from Nigeria.

Nigeria is a great country richly blessed with human and natural resources, with fertile soil.

Nigeria does not suffer from natural disasters, as is always the case with some of the Western world.

Despite this, a lot of Nigerians still wish to travel abroad from Nigeria. The reason for this may not be far from the poor economic situation of the country.

Some others just want to travel abroad from Nigeria, not necessarily because of the way things are in the country, but for the purpose of tourism and sightseeing.

Whatever your reasons are for wanting to travel out of Nigeria to abroad, this article will guide you in achieving that.

In this article, I will show you how to travel abroad from Nigeria.

Here are the steps to take to successfully travel outside Nigeria:

Step 1: Get An International Passport

If you ever intend on getting out of Nigeria, the first thing you should do is to get an international passport , that’s if you don’t have one already.

You cannot be allowed to set foot out of this country if you do not have an international passport, as that’s the only means by which your identity and citizenship can be ascertained.

Given the introduction of the new Nigerian digital international passport, it only takes about 24 hours for your international passport to be ready, and the cost of it could be from N18,000 to N25,000, depending on how fast you want the application process to take.

So walk into any immigration office today and start your application today.

Step 2: Have a Clear Purpose for Travelling

A lot of Nigerians suffer like ants when they travel abroad. This is because they did not define the purpose of traveling out of the country before they left.

Yes, Nigeria may not be a friendly place to live for some people, hence their quest to travel out without any clear vision and purpose in their minds.

But before you make that move, first ask yourself the following questions and write down the answers:

• Why am I traveling out of my fatherland?
• Where will I live when I get there?
• For how long will I stay there?

If you can’t answer these three questions, then I’d advise you not to bother traveling, or else you might just be selling yourself into slavery.

But a positive answer to the above questions will better give you a clue as to how to better prepare yourself when you travel out, so you don’t end up like most Nigerians who left their good Nigerian jobs just to end up living the life of slavery over there.

Step 3: Choose a Country To Travel to

Haven defined your purpose for wanting to travel abroad from Nigeria; you decide on the country you wish to go to.

It is always advisable to carry out a little research about that country to know how hospitable the people are, the kind of laws they have, and the nature of the government they operate.

The reason you should do this is that, whether you like it or yet, the above factors will greatly affect you when you are there.

If the country appears good to you, then you can proceed to the next step.

Also, you should find out whether or not the country in question requires a visa from your home country.

This is so because some countries don’t require a Nigerian passport holder to obtain a visa before migrating to their country.

Step 4: Get a Visa

I believe by now you already know the country you want to travel to. You can now begin the process of getting a visa.

The process of getting a visa can be quite tedious and frustrating. Still, with the right amount of effort and commitment, you will eventually get one, that’s if your intentions for traveling to the country of your choice are genuine.

To get your visa, simply visit the official website of the country you intend to travel to, read their visa requirements, and book an appointment with the embassy.

On the day of the appointment, simply go there with all the required documents and present.

If the interview goes well, within one to three weeks, you should have your visa ready. After this, you can proceed to the next step.

Step 5: Book a Flight Ticket

After you have gotten your visa ready, the next thing you must do is book a flight ticket, as you can not travel to any American, Asian, or European countries by road.

Flight tickets can range from N250,000 to N1,000,000 depending on the country you are traveling to and the class of flight you are paying for.

There is the executive class, business class, and economy class. Economy class is less expensive.

Hence, if you cannot comfortably afford higher-class flight tickets, you might want to stick with economy class.

Step 6: Get Money for Your Trip

Funding is the next important thing you must source for before you can travel abroad from Nigeria.

You must have known by now that traveling out of Nigeria is not a cheap adventure. Hence, you’ll need to find a way to source funds.

Funds could be the show-stopper for any trip, and a trip abroad cannot be any different.

You should know the minimum B asic T ravel A llowance ‘BTA ‘ of the country you intend to travel to.

Some countries place their BTA as high as N3.5 Million, while others put theirs as low as N300,000.

Without presenting this BTA, you cannot be allowed into that country, even after meeting every other criterion above.

The essence of the BTA is so you can have the required amount to book a hotel reservation and pay your transportation bills and other necessities upon your arrival in the desired country.

A Few Tips on How to Easily Travel Abroad

Below are a few tips that will make it easy for you to travel abroad from Nigeria.

1. Apply to Study in the Country of Your Choice

It’s easier to get accepted to study in a foreign country than to get accepted as a resident.

A degree in Nigeria with at least a second-class upper will really help you. A complete WAEC result is also a great help.

2. Attend Conferences

Conferences can help facilitate your acceptance into foreign countries.

If you apply to attend conferences, you could get accepted to travel abroad for the conference. Still, before this can happen, you must be a professional of some kind, maybe in IT, law, agriculture or medicine.

Do your research and get into these conferences.

3. Represent Your Country Internationally

• Postgraduate masters (even if you have a 3rd class). The following  European  and  Asian  countries are good places to look for free/cheap education. You may also be required to learn a new language while or before you study. This is an advantage for you in life.
• Student Exchange programs on platforms like  AIESEC  allow you to connect with other students abroad as well as have exchange programs where you host them when they come to Nigeria, and you also have opportunities to spend time abroad working or volunteering.
• Vocational training for specialized skills. E.g. engineering, manufacturing, etc

• Academic scholarships are available for lots of countries you can search based on course, country, amount, etc. See some  here ,  here  and  here .

• You can also take a “gap year” from school to go work for a year or so.  Here ,  here ,and  here .

You can Legally Leave Nigeria as a professional

• Work visa to work as a nonimmigrant, based on experience, age, education, job offers etc. Almost every country in the world applies, although some have specific visas for different fields of work (IT, Healthcare, Arts, etc). Think of any country and search for jobs in your field of work on sites such as  Indeed ,  LinkedIn ,  Glassdoor , etc.
• Go teach English in non-English-speaking parts of the world. Asia and some parts of Africa are good places to start. See more here
• Start a business or a startup in a country that lets you, or work at an early stage one. Here are  15 countries that offer visas for startup founders
• Apply for business accelerators/incubators for your early stage startups. Most accelerators involve travelling several countries offer to the base for 3-6 months. Check some out here  or  here .
• Get a visa as an Intra-company transferee if you work for an international employer – even some African countries apply here.

Other Options to Leave Nigeria as a Professional

• Get a  Tier 2 (Health and Care) visa with a job offer from the NHS or related organisation, are eligible and qualified as a doctor, nurse, health professional or adult social care professional.
• You can also get a domestic employee visa if your employer is migrating to a foreign country. US ,  UK ,  UAE , etc.
• If you are a pastor/missionary, you can get a temporary religious worker visa for a lot of countries. The UK and US are some countries that allow this.
• Get non-immigrant visa as an Individual with Extraordinary Ability or Achievement, Individual or Team Athlete, or Member of an Entertainment Group (with Int’l recognition of sustained performance), Artist or Entertainer (Individual or Group) {under exchange program or to teach, coach or perform under a culturally unique program etc or persons providing essential services to such persons. Eg in  France
• Get a visa as a freelancer or remote worker in countries such as in  Germany ,  Dubai  and  Italy , etc.
• Apply for a business visa as a representative of an overseas business if you’re either: the sole representative of an overseas business planning to set up either a foreign branch or wholly-owned subsidiary or an employee of an overseas newspaper, news agency or broadcasting organisation posted on a long-term assignment abroad.

You can Legally Leave Nigeria as an Investor

• Investor visa allows you to live or get citizenship in certain countries if you invest a certain amount of money in business (usually $50k and above). Available in a lot of countries like the  UK ,  US ,
• Paid citizenship where you just “pay” the governments an amount of money as a form of investment in the country and they offer you citizenship in exchange. Popular in Caribbean countries such as St Kitts and Nevis, Cyprus, Malta. See   here  and  here .
• You can buy property in certain countries to get a permanent residency status. See more  info , or  here .
• Some countries let you set up an investment vehicle where you use them as your corporate headquarters for your company or startup, allowing you to spend extended periods there with your family. See more  here  or  here .

As a tourist

• Nigerians can apply for visas to every single country in the world. There are no restrictions or sanctions (that I am aware of). The process for visa application differs from country to country, but you can plan to visit a country first before deciding to move temporarily or permanently. Some ways of applying are: for tourism, business, medical treatment, to get married, visit family.

Every country has its process to convert from a tourist to a work visa, so research the specific country you are interested in. To just Relocate/Japa

• You can leave Nigeria by applying to become a permanent resident of a country if your qualifications and experience meet the labour demands of that country. Canada is the poster child for all things migration via a point based system, but it is not the only country where you can do this. The UK, Australia, New Zealand and Canada are the four most common points based on immigration systems. Read more here  and  here
• File for residency by getting engaged and planning to marry, or better still, already married to a citizen of another country. Most countries in the world do this.
• Get a refugee or humanitarian visa (asylum) if you are subject to persecution in your home country or you face substantial discrimination or human rights abuses.
• Get a family visa as a spouse, parent or child of a person who is a citizen or has a visa in some countries such as the US, Canada, UK.
• Apply for a  Global Talent visa  to live or work in the UK if you’re a leader or potential leader in one of the following fields: academia or research, arts and culture, digital technology. You can apply for permanent residency after that.

The number of Nigerians migrating to Canada is skyrocketing daily. According to data published by the Canadian government, the growth rate of Nigerians immigrating to Canada has exceeded some of Canada’s biggest sources of immigrants over the last half-decade.

In 2019, Canada welcomed 341,000 immigrants in total which is in alignment with its immigration policy to attract skilled workers. Today, more Nigerians have left the country to Canada in search of greener pastures, while more people are on the verge of leaving, making the immigration processes highly competitive.

The reason for this high rate of immigration is the prevalent situation in the country – the high rate of unemployment, poor healthcare services, poor standard of education, high level of insecurity amongst others.

With the competitive nature of Canadian migration, many people are finding it difficult to migrate. However, all hope is not lost as there are other equally good countries people can explore. These countries have robust economies and need immigrants to fill in many job vacancies to boost their economy. The countries are as

Immigration to Australia from Nigeria has increased at a yearly rate of 11.88%. This makes it one of the biggest migration routes for skilled human capital in the world. Presently, Australia is accepting Nigerians with permanent residency in more than 400 different occupations as well as for working holiday visas, student visas, working visas and more.

An interesting thing about Australian immigration is that Australia makes very little discrepancy between nationalities. Australia has different visas for people that have permanent residency. These visas are categorized as follows: 189,190 and 491 Australian Visa subclasses.

The 189 and 190 Australian Permanent Residency visa classes allow holders and their immediate families to:

• live and work in Australia, enter and leave the Country as they choose without the need for further visas, access medicare (Australia’s world-class medical system), education for children, own property and best of all, holders of the 189 and 190 visa class migrating to Australia from Nigeria can convert their Permanent Residency visas to full Australian citizenship.

The 491 visa launched in November 2019 is a Skilled Work Regional visa and has 14,000 places allocated per year. It is a skilled migration (points tested) visa which lasts for an initial five years, and it can be converted into full Permanent Residency status. For either an expatriate living in Nigeria or a Citizen of Nigeria to move to Australia on Skilled Migration they must first qualify with an eligible occupation and then score enough points to be able to enter the Australia Expression of Interest (EOI) system.

Steps involved in Applying for Permanent Residency of Australia as a skilled migrant includes the following:

• Identify an Occupation in Demand, Score at least 65 on the Australian Points list, Secure a Positive Skills Assessment, Take an English Test, Lodge an Expression of Interest, Receive an Invitation to Apply, Lodge Formal Application, Do Police Checks, Complete Medical Checks and Receive a PR Visa.
• It takes about 1 year from start to finish of the process. Sometimes it happens sooner, sometimes later though one year is a good benchmark to keep in mind.

Germany is another country that Nigerians can migrate to. Though the process is not easy, becoming a student in Germany offers a straight-forward process of migrating to the country. To study in Germany, you need to ask yourself whether you want to study at a private or public institution and in what language (German or English). Many universities offer courses in English, provided you show proof of your proficiency in the language.

To study in Germany, you will need to take the following steps:

• Find the right programme: There are lots of universities and programmes you could pursue in Germany, but it is essential you choose one that will help you meet your career goals.
• Make an application: Check out what the entry requirements are for the programme and make an application. You will need to consider factors such as whether you want to study in German or English. To study in these languages, you will need to provide proof of your proficiency. For example, is having an IELTS score of 6.0 to study in English. Many institutions also provide proficiency tests if you do not have the proof needed to apply.
• Apply for your German student visa: Students applying to study in Germany from outside of the Schengen Area will need to apply for a student visa. To do this, you will need to get in touch with the German embassy or consulate in your country of residence to start the process. You will be required to provide several documents and attend an interview to discuss why you want to travel to Germany.
• Secure your accommodation: You will need to find somewhere to live before you get to Germany; there are lots of websites you can use to find a property or housemate. Some institutions may also offer support with this.
• Travel to Germany: Once you have acquired your visa, you will be ready to travel to Germany and start your course.

If you are considering working alongside your studies, the German government allows international students to work a total of 120 full or 240 half days.

Switzerland

When it comes to beautiful countries in Europe, Switzerland is one of them. The country’s quality of living is top-notch, though migrating to the country is difficult. This is because Swiss immigration law is geared towards discouraging immigration. However, there are still ways one can migrate to the country like through gaining admission into a university in Switzerland.

Swiss universities offer a very high standard of education and comparatively low tuition fees in bachelor, masters, and doctoral degree levels. As a Nigerian international student looking to study in Switzerland, you will need to apply for a Switzerland student visa.

The Swiss student visa is issued to visa applicants who intend to undertake studies, language courses or vocational training from an accredited university or institution in Switzerland. For short courses of less than 90 days, you will need a short-term Schengen C visa, while for courses of more than 90 days, a national D visa and a residence permit will be required for travel. Residence permits are issued by the Cantonal Migration Offices.

Swiss visa application for a long-term D visa, will require you to provide the following documents:

• Three Visa Type D application forms which must be properly filled and signed.
• Passport photographs
• International Passport
• Financial Evidence
• Original certificate of English language proficiency test and two copies, i.e. IELTS, TOEFL
• Previous educational certificates and diplomas
• Original confirmation of enrolment at a recognised Swiss educational institution
• Original confirmation of course tuition fees paid

The visa procedure takes 8–12 weeks to process from the date of your application acceptance

After your studies, you will be given a 6-months work visa to seek employment. If you are unable to find work within those six months, you will be asked to leave or you become an illegal immigrant in the country.

New Zealand

New Zealand has become a very popular choice of long-term Immigration destination for Nigerian citizens. Nigerian individuals and families are drawn to New Zealand for quality of life, nature, a strong economy, and a very safe environment. New Zealand is ranked as one of the best places in the world to live and many Nigerian citizens agree that immigrating to New Zealand was one of the best life choices they have ever made.

Some visas, such as those for qualified Nigerian migrants grant immediate permanent residence, but you must meet the conditions attached to the visa to ensure that your journey from Nigeria is not interrupted. There are several ways to obtain a residence visa, many of which start with a temporary visa that allows you to study or start a business in New Zealand.

7 Ways To Relocate From Nigeria

If you’re a Nigerian living in Nigeria, the chances that you’ve thought of ways to relocate from Nigeria are high. The process of legally migrating is rigorous— from research to getting finances right, to finding the easiest countries to migrate to and to deciding how you actually want to relocate. 

In this article, we’ll share all the ways you can legally migrate from Nigeria to other countries. Some processes are more straightforward than some others, while some are more expensive than others. With some ways to relocate from Nigeria, you are assured that your japa is final, while with some other ways, you still have to fulfil some requirements for some time in the destination country. We’ll discuss everything in this article. 

1. You can relocate from Nigeria through family.

Whether it’s your spouse or your family of origin, having family members who are citizens or permanent residents of other countries is a direct way of migrating from one country to another. With marriage- also termed “family formation- getting legally married to a citizen of another country will grant you some form of citizenship in most countries. Because most countries know this and want to avoid doctored marriages for visas, the process isn’t as straightforward as getting your new passport on the day after you get married.

Many countries undergo background checks before giving people their new passports through this method. Some of these background checks may include finding out how long you were dating before you got married, requiring citizenship applicants to show genuine pictorial proof of dating period, wedding ceremony, mutual friends, etc. You also have to have been married for at least five years in some countries before applying for citizenship. 

Family reunification, according to the International Organization for Migration , is “the right of non-nationals to enter into and reside in a country where their family members reside lawfully or of which they have the nationality in order to preserve the family unit”. In this case, you have to be able to legally prove that you’re either the spouse, parent or child of the “principal migrant”. The laws for family reunification vary from country to country so you have to do your research based on the country you plan to. In some countries like Canada, siblings and grandchildren count as family you can reunite with, while in some others they don’t. See the full list here . 

2. You can migrate as an asylum seeker. 

Although the rules vary from country to country, the general concept of asylum is an independent country granting refuge in its country to an individual who is fleeing persecution or serious harm or for other reasons. If you’re fleeing persecution from your home country, you can apply for asylum in other countries. Don’t expect a simple and unchallenged process though, because many people file for asylum even when they’re not in danger. There is typically an investigation done to determine if you qualify for refugee protection. Not every asylum seeker will ultimately be recognized as a refugee, but every recognized refugee is initially an asylum seeker. 3. You can relocate from Nigeria as a student.

Relocating as a student is one of the most popular ways to relocate from Nigeria. While a student visa is typically not a for japa-ing, being a student in various countries gives you a high chance of integrating into society after you complete your studies. The UK for example now lets international students stay and work  in the UK for an extra two years after they graduate with the Graduate Route. Every country you want to japa to has schools that offer courses to international students, and while some countries have a strict policy of making people return to their home countries after they graduate, many others like Canada, Australia, UK and Belgium encourage people to stay, join the work force and become permanent residents. Manty international students even get jobs before they graduate! 

Worried about cost? Many European and Asian countries offer cheap, or even free education to international students. Many countries and schools abroad also offer scholarships. With good research and a good application process, you can secure a legitimate scholarship .  

4. You can relocate from Nigeria as an investor.

Some countries have investor visas, where if you invest a certain amount of money in the economy, you automatically become a permanent resident or a citizen. Some other countries allow you to become a permanent resident when you buy land and properties.

You could also japa by starting a business in countries that let you start a business in their country because you would be helping their economy.

In some other countries , you can buy a citizenship. Just pay the government, and you become a citizen.

5. You can relocate from Nigeria on a talent visa

Australia, China, France, New Zealand, UK, and the US are the countries that offer talent visas to highly skilled professionals, distinguished athletes and artists, and people with advanced degrees in select fields. 

6. You can relocate from Nigeria as a professional

While this is a wide spectrum, a lot of Nigerian professionals are leaving Nigeria to continue their businesses and professional careers abroad. Countries all over the world offer work visas to people to move into their countries to work, and then become immigrants. For instance,  a lot of Nigerian doctors and nurses, are leaving Nigeria to start work abroad.

Some non-English speaking countries are constantly looking for people who can speak English to migrate into their countries to teach English. This is a way to migrate professionally.

Canada, Australia, Spain, UK and many other countries also offer startup founders startup visas where you can go to their country and set up your startup.  

If you work for an international organisation, you can relocate from Nigeria by transferring to a branch of your company in another country. Companies that allow this help the applicants through the process.

• Cook your own food. Enjoying the local food is part of the traveling experience, but it can make a serious dent in your wallet. Try to go grocery shopping and cook most of your meals at your accommodation and only eat out every now and then.
• Sign up to get frequent flyer miles. The best way to fight off jet lag? Knowing you got your ticket for free. If you know you’ll be flying a lot while your away, signing up for frequent flyer miles early on will help you save money in the long run. They’ll also email you about any deals they have going on so you can snap up cheaper tickets!
• Try not to use your card overseas. Foreign transaction fees can really eat through your money.
