Three Rivers Stadium Eagles concert in Pittsburgh, PA – July 24, 1976

eagles fleetwood mac tour 1976

The Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh was where the Eagles with Fleetwood Mac and Boz Scaggs performed on July 24, 1976. This was only the second concert of the summer at the stadium. ZZ Top was the first on June 12, and according to what was written it did not go well. Unfortunately, almost everything that was written about Three Rivers Stadium right after that show only focused on the disaster of that ZZ Top concert and not the music of the Eagles concert.

The Eagles had their two shows at the Spectrum in Philadelphia just three days later. They were nearing the end of the One of These Nights tour.

Three Rivers Stadium was home to Pittsburgh Pirates baseball and Pittsburgh Steelers football from 1970-2000.

An article written by Scott Mervis of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette appeared in the online Post-Gazette on March 22, 2022 about this particular Eagles concert in 1976. And, it has a link within the article to this page on Randy Meisner Hearts On Fire . The article is titled “ 1976: The Year the Eagles Saved Stadium Concerts in Pittsburgh and Released Hotel California “ . It’s a very interesting Eagles article written by Scott Mervis, so you may want to take a few moments just to read it. If you can’t access the newspaper site, this is the pdf version .

The music at this concert will be more subdued and the audience will be less oriented to rowdy behavior. The bad publicity from the previous concert has hurt ticket sales for the Eagles concert.

Randy the Peacemaker “We came to play”

Since Randy did not usually speak from the stage, it’s amazing he said something. That must mean the crowd was really bad.

47 years later and still remembered as the BEST concert ever….hands down

That’s good to know. With the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, AND Boz Scaggs it doesn’t surprise me that it was a great day.

great concert, the summer before my senior year in high school. I was already a fan of the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac and I went out and bought Silk Degrees. I was the only one in our group who had even heard of him.I dont think we had bad seats wasn't it general admission.Framptom Comes Alive was played over and over again at every High school party we went to that summer... great memories

I was there too! I liked all of the performers. It was general admission and it got a little crazy but even though I'm older, I'd do it again (but assigned seats please). I guess I'm showing my age! lol

I was there as well. Thought it was awesome!! Ran into a few of my couins while I was there (believe it or not!).

Yeah, it was an awesome concert. Lots of food. Lots of drink. Lots of ... and Lots of music. Got home at 4am, then had to work at 7. One of the most memorable concerts I've been to. General admission wasn't the greatest idea, though. The concert seemed to go on forever.

Hard to believe that was 35 years ago. I was there, too. It was a terrific concert. I wanted to see Fleetwood Mac. Stevie Nicks was mesmerizing. What a woman.... Chuck

was the first summer after freshman year at University of Vermont. My roomate that year was from Norwood MA. 7 of us planned on crashing at his house. Six of us vermonters took the drive down to Norwood that afternoon which provided plenty of time to roll all the weed we had into nice thick stogies...we got to the stadium and realized that we really did not have any money or food or drink....It was a long show. We began trading joints for food and drink with other concert goers around us. what a party and show....Wow Boz Scaggs opens for Fleetwood Mac and then the Eagles.....A memory forever... Is there a live recording of this available for download on Dime or someplace else???

Great concert indeed, I was 17 and my first concert and it was TREMENDOUS. General admission was a bit funky. Started way in the back when Boz started playing and midway through Fleetwood we were in the front row on the grass and ended with the Eagles. Great concert in a real dive of a stadium lol

My first concert also. Great show! I was an Eagles fan; didn't know the other bands but loved them! Went out and bought "Silk Degrees" and "White Album" and "Rumors". My husband was there too (but we didn't meet until years later). Like the other comment, we didn't get home until 3 or 4...the traffic getting out of there was unbelievable!

best concert ever at foxboro.joe walsh came back on stage after two encores and stated 'were not leavin here to we play every song we ever wrote.'summer 0f high school graduation i am 54 years old and remember it like yesterday.will never happen again

I was there,, remember it well,,well sorta, HUGE crowd,,lasted LONG time ! Now I'm going to see Fleetwwod Mac some 37 years later at Comcast Center,,but at 52 I will behave for this one !!

Was there too. One of my favorite memories. I saw Elton John there several weeks before (7/4//76) and although that was a great concert... I place this show a notch higher, Best memory (or at least what I think I remember!) is the last song... Take it to the Limit.... I remembr the crowd of thousands waving lighters. It was beautiful. Oh if only we could go back in time...

I had just graduated high school, and had been at the Elton John concert at Schaefer a few weeks earlier on our country's bicentennial, so I knew what GA and parking/traffic would be like. Got "talked" into going by a girl I knew who was going with her boyfriend, but really wanted to be with me. How's that for an ego stroke. She had a extra ticket so I agreed, plus the boyfriend drove. All good for me. At some point early in the long day, the boyfriend took off, and the 2 of us kind of got immersed in each other. Long story short, we were left without a ride home. We ended up thumbing/walking the 40 mile route, and I remember being home pretty early. Had no problem with rides for about 80% of the way and walked the other 20%. Oddly, we never hooked up again after that night. But, seeing 3 great bands was awesome!!

I saw this same concert, that summer, at 3 Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh. I can never find any info about it, cost of tickets, etc.....I was a college student at Youngstown State University, and I still think of it as my all time favorite concert!

First date with my gf/wife to be! Awesome missed most of boz scaggs but pre show in parking lot was good! Music blaring swapping food for ...... then the concert! It was awesome! Joe Walsh was kinda new as an Eagle WOW!

I went with my brother and his friend Danny Zanes, who would have been a HS sophomore. Danny of course later had his own band, the Del Fuegos. As I remember it the crowd on the field was packed so tightly that you couldn't fall down if you passed out. There was plenty of room in the stadium seats though. And no one was listening to the Boz Scaggs set...probably because it was still light.

I went to that show. Had a great time! Loved the Eagles arriving/departing via copter... added that extra cool factor to it! I remember took hours just to get out of the parking lot too! Memorable show!

I went to that concert. It was a great show. It got cool that night. I think I remember people lighting their soda cups on fire and waving them back & forth. Think they should have a reunion

Thought it was a fantastic show but I was a little put off by the Eagles performing the Doolin' Dalton/Desperado Reprise separate from the main songs. I thought it worked very well on the lp but not the concert.

I was there as well. I thought that Poco played as well and had some sort of a mishap with a bass player passing out.. does anybody else remember this or am I confusing it with another concert..?

Went to this concert on a whim after a little "afternoon delight" (we were in Weymouth) with my girl (6 months later my wife). We loved this concert, went to see the Eagles and Boz. We were playing the daylights out of Silk Degrees at her place. I had her on my shoulders so she could see the Eagles. Cost me a few trips to the chiropractor but it was worth it.

I still have my ticket stub but the Boz part is not showing. My sister reminded me that Boz was the opener. I just saw Boz at Twin River casino in RI, he was great! He played some new stuff and a lot of songs from Silk Degrees. Back to the 1976 concert, I had just graduated from hs in 76, we came up from the Cape, my Mom and two sisters. I sat next to a man I had a crush on in the stadium sets and my sister Judy went on the lawn close to the stage. At the end of the concert, we spent a lot of time searching for her. The concert was thrilling and inspiring, the music was so good! Probably smoked some weed. There was a real community feeling in the crowd. 39 years ago, great times and memories.

I was there and favorite memory was the amazing colorful sunset while Fleetwood played "Over My Head." The pill I took only made it better. Go ask Alice....

I was there and it was great! The show started in the daylight with Boz Scaggs and they definitely set the great vibes for the remainer of the show :-) I then managed to get myself right down in front of the stage when Stevie Nicks was singing with Christine McVie! Seeing those 2 that close was so, so awesome!! The Eagles out on one great show and Joe Walsh using the talk box was totally awesome too!

I was there for Eagles, Fleetwood Mac & Boz Scaggs, but My ticket says July 19th. & We paid $9.00. ???

I was at this concert. It was great. Seems there was a problem with people trying to break in during Fleetwood Mac. I have cassettes of most of Eagles & Fleetwood Mac. Eagles encored with Chuck Berry's "Oh Carol". Bought bad Eagles tshirt that shrunk to size 12 the first time it was washed, lol. Long but great music.

Yes, I was a month shy of 19 at the time making it 40 years ago this July. Time flies. The thing I remember was how amazing the sound was despite the fact it was held in a large outdoor football stadium filled to capacity, 60,000 I think. Especially the Eagles. It was as you were listening to them on your stereo. I guess the other thing about 4 years earlier as a freshmen at UConn I walked into the gym with my roommate for the annual spring concert on campus to hear a band call Renaissance but they hand not started yet. The warm up band was somebody called Fleetwood Mac. We stayed for about 5 min and left! One of my most painful regrets. Lastly, I know when Im asked about the best concert I ever attended i think about Bruce Springsteen in '75 with him playing songs from his "Born to Run" album (truly a religious experience), and the time when my wife and I heard Bonnie Raitt at an concert in CT in '91 singing from her grammy winning "Luck of the Draw" album with her parents in the audience. In the end, it always comes back to that night in 1976 at Schaefer stadium in Foxboro listening to three amazing acts at their very best. Going that night was one of the best decisions I ever made!

I was in the infield at Three Rivers Stadium, feeling fine! What a show! My sons now listen to that music and I tell them I was at this concert with their mom, They say to me, yea right you did, like I didn't! I tell them to go ask their mother..........

Was at the Three Rivers Concert, what a show!

I was there and was 21. Great concert. It was general admission. I spent a lot of time down on the field. Weather was perfect. Biggest memory is the Eagles playing what seemed like a long version of Take it to the Limit (one more time). They kept hitting that last verse over and over and the music was echoing through the stadium. Good memories.

I think Boz Scaggs was a replacement for someone like Steve Miller (who was now too big to open for Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles). When I heard he was added to the show I immediately got tickets with a few friends because I was a huge fan of all three. Highlight for me was "Good Day In Hell" which was a just OK track from On The Border. In concert The Eagles blew the lid off the place with that song and the stadium didn't even have a lid!

Enjoyed this as my very first concert! I was a sophomore in HS and went with my cousins It was amazing! They flew in the bands on helicopters and it was GENERAL admission. We sat mid field center on blankets with coolers and so many fans!! I remember when it came time to find a bathroom, because we were on the field....we had to go up to go down under bleachers. So, people picked us up and passed us up the crowd and then down the crowd to get there. CRAZY night I will NEVER forget!!

I think one poster commented already on the Coke containers coated with wax about a quart size, everyone lit them on fire and because of the wax they were like huge candles glowing. I was 18 back then and to this day I sometimes think about that show it was one of if not the best ever!

I had just graduated high school in June. (NNHS-76). A whole bunch of us from our class decided to go. It was the beginning of the end for our crew. Most of us drifted apart after that. It was OUR "Woodstock" in that it signified the end of an era.

Yes I was there! I was 16 at the time. Had the best time. I sat with my friends (who were lame by the way) and a few rows down there were a bunch of people having a great time. They called me down to sit with them. They were all from Hyde Park. We drank Lancer wine and smoked a whole lot of weed. When I returned to my friends (who were still lame) I couldn't begin to tell them what a great time I had! I will never ever forget that night! I am 59 now and it's still fresh in my mind.

July 4, 1976: How Rock Stars Celebrated America’s Bicentennial

You only turn 200 once. In 1976, the United States geared up for a series of boisterous bicentennials celebrations ranging from parades to fireworks to commemorative exhibitions to, of course, concerts. On July 4, the official anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, bands across the country -- some not even Americans themselves -- hit the stage to salute the milestone.

Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley , the "King of Rock and Roll" himself, performed for a special bicentennial-billed performance in Tulsa, Okla. Roughly a year prior to his final live performance and death in 1977, the singer swung through several of his own hits like "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock," as well as a slew of covers such as Ray Charles' "I've Got A Woman," Gordon Lightfoot 's "Early Morning Rain" and Olivia Newton-John's "If You Love Me (Let Me Know)." The performance was recorded and released as a live album.

Even the Brits got into the patriotic spirit. Elton John , then on his Louder Than Concorde But Not Quite as Pretty tour, appeared in front of thousands in Foxboro, Mass. donning a bedazzled Lady Liberty outfit. "Elton ripped off his crown, then his robe to reveal his blue t-shirt, red, white and blue satin basketball shorts in American flag motif," recalled one attendee , "he jumped off the top of the piano and started rockin’ with the band!"

Bruce Springsteen

Others kept things a bit more subdued. Bruce Springsteen and his E Street band played an small impromptu club show at The Stone Pony in Ashbury Park, N.J., the local rock club that had helped launched his career. The setlist included a cover of Stax-singer Eddie Floyd's "Knock on Wood," which Springsteen launched into alongside fellow New Jerseyan, Southside Johnny .

Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Loggins & Messina, Dan Fogelberg

Fans across the country were also treated to some one-of-a-kind collaborative concerts. The Eagles , Fleetwood Mac , Loggins & Messina and Dan Fogelberg performed for a crowd of 37,000 in Tampa, Fla. The show was headlined by the Eagles, who had released their massively successful  Greatest Hits album earlier in the year.

Head East, Rick Derringer, Mahogany Rush, Ted Nugent, Foghat

Further north, fans packed the Rockford Speedway in Loves Park, Ill. for a revved up show from Head East , Rick Derringer, Mahogany Rush , Ted Nugent and Foghat . "Since we all know this is your birthday today, we're gonna play your birthday song," Mahogany Rush's Canadian frontman Frank Marino told the crowd  just before launching into a rock rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner." Contrary to the poster below, Jeff Beck did not appear at this show but elsewhere instead...

ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blue Oyster Cult, the Outlaws, Point Blank

Southern rock was on full display in Memphis, Tenn. as ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd took the stage (along with Blue Oyster Cult , the Outlaws and Point Blank.) ZZ Top's portion in particular left a lasting impression on fans -- the band, then traveling on their Worldwide Texas tour included actual livestock on stage. "The Worldwide Texas tour was a huge tour, I mean it was elaborate even for the time, and it was extremely expensive," Billy Gibbons remembered , "and we weren't big enough to do that and everybody told us, but we did it."

Peter Frampton, Gary Wright, Natural Gas

Down the road at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville, Peter Frampton (who was later motivated by the September 11 attacks to become a U.S. citizen himself), fresh off the monumental success of 1976's  Frampton Comes Alive! was holding his own Fourth of July bash with supporting acts Gary Wright and Natural Gas.

Aerosmith, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Jeff Beck, Black Oak Arkansas

Aerosmith headlined in Winston, N.C., taking the stage after multiple opening acts including Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Jeff Beck and Black Oak Arkansas .

Talking Heads

In addition to rock and roll, punk and new wave also continued their steady rise. Talking Heads played a show at New York City's beloved CBGB's. At the time, the band was busy prepping to record their debut studio album,  Talking Heads:77 .

The Ramones

The Ramones took the party overseas for a supremely successful gig at The Roundhouse in London. (They followed another American act, the Flamin' Groovies from San Francisco.) The next evening, July 5, the band met their British counterparts, the Clash and the Sex Pistols . "They said the U.K. was interested and we’d grown up with all our favorite bands coming from the U.K.," drummer  Tommy Ramone   told Uncut , "so we were very excited and we thought it might give us our break."

Alice Cooper

Of course, where there was success, there was also a few accounts of patriotic plans that didn't go quite as anticipated. Alice Cooper had recently released his second solo album Goes To Hell , but the subsequent tour, which was to include a stop at the Detroit State Fairgrounds with guests Rick Derringer and Thin Lizzy , was cancelled when Cooper fell ill with anemia.

Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson was ready to host his fourth annual Fourth of July Picnic, but the three-day event was cut short on July 5 when the PA system shorted out due to rain. More trouble followed: one picnic attendant drowned, four were stabbed and 140 arrests were made, leading to significantly tighter security at the festival in following years.

Outside of rock, the United State Olympics committee made bids for both the summer and winter 1976 Olympic Games in acknowledgment of the bicentennial, though neither came to fruition. Los Angeles lost the summer to Montreal, Canada, while Denver initially won the winter bid but financial concerns led Colorado voters to reject the funding and the games were instead held in Innsbruck, Austria. Meanwhile, in extraterrestrial news, NASA planned for a spacecraft, Viking 1, to land on Mars on July 4, but a rocky landing site pushed the expedition back several weeks.

"The American adventure is a continuing process," President Gerald Ford, who would be succeeded by Jimmy Carter a few months later,  said in a speech outside of Independence Hall in Philadelphia on July 4, 1976. He had left Washington D.C in good hands:  Johnny Cash  served as Grand Marshall of the official bicentennial parade for a crowd of 500,000. "As one milestone is passed, another is sighted. As we achieve one goal -- a longer lifespan, a literate population, a leadership in world affairs -- we raise our sights."

Jon Bon Jovi Wasn’t Expecting His Recovery to Take This Long

A Timeline of Fleetwood Mac’s Dramatic, Decades-Long Saga

Between illicit affairs and ever-changing lineups, here’s a look inside the turmoil that nearly tore the band apart.

fleetwood mac portrait

After Fleetwood Mac’s formation in 1967, constant lineup changes, crippling addictions, and tumultuous romances threatened to derail the group's success. With the additions of Christine McVie, Lindsey Buckingham, and Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac spun inner discord into gold, creating breakup songs that would resonate with multiple generations of rock fans.

Over 50 years on, Fleetwood Mac’s music continues to capture the zeitgeist. After a 2020 TikTok featuring “Dreams” went viral, the fan-favorite track re-entered Billboard's Hot 100 chart , beating out Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga for a spot in the top 40. Harry Styles’ friendship with Stevie Nicks has also delighted fans in recent years.

Now, Amazon Studios’ Daisy Jones & The Six series could usher in the latest revival of Fleetwood Mac mania. Based on the novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid, the story follows a love triangle at the center of an iconic 1970s rock band—sound familiar? Reid cites Fleetwood Mac as the prime inspiration for her best-selling novel , which was published in 2019.

Whether or not you’re tuning into Daisy Jones , revisit the story of the real-life band that inspired the show below.

July 1967: Fleetwood Mac is founded in London, England.

fleetwood mac

The band’s original lineup consisted of drummer Mick Fleetwood, bassist John McVie, and vocalists/guitarists Jeremy Spencer and Peter Green. Danny Kirwan became the group’s third guitarist in 1968. That year, Fleetwood Mac released their self-titled debut album.

May 1970: The band loses its frontman.

Green quits Fleetwood Mac after a bad acid trip caused his mental health to deteriorate.

August 1970: Christine McVie joins Fleetwood Mac.

christine mcvie

Two years after marrying John McVie , Christine, formerly of the band Chicken Shack, became a keyboardist and vocalist in his band. She was featured on Fleetwood Mac's fourth album, Kiln House , for which she also drew the cover art .

February 1971: Spencer leaves the band.

Before a sold-out show at the Whisky A Go Go, Spencer left to “get a magazine” and never returned. The band later discovered that Spencer joined a Christian cult known as The Family (formerly known as The Children of God). Bob Welch was hired as his replacement.

August 1972: Kirwan is fired from Fleetwood Mac.

Kirwan’s alcoholism strained his relationship with the band. After an explosive fight backstage led Kirwan to destroy his Les Paul guitar, he refused to perform and was promptly fired by Fleetwood. He was soon replaced by Bob Weston .

October 1973: Weston is fired after having an affair with Fleetwood's wife.

jenny boyd and mick fleetwood

Fleetwood married Jenny Boyd in 1970. Her older sister, model Pattie Boyd , was George Harrison's then-wife and muse.

Boyd and Weston had an affair during Fleetwood Mac's tour promoting Mystery to Me . When Fleetwood found out, he was devastated; Weston was fired, and the rest of the tour was canceled. After completing their final show in Lincoln, Nebraska, the band temporarily split.

April 1974: A legal battle ensues over who owns Fleetwood Mac.

Fleetwood, the McVies, and Welch sued their former manager Clifford Davis in order to retain ownership of the Fleetwood Mac name. Davis was reportedly trying to use the name for another band in America.

“I think Davis thought we wouldn’t be bothered to fight his takeover,” Fleetwood told Rolling Stone at the time. He later added, “So many managers seem to forget who is employing who, and who makes the money. They forget it’s the people who bash the drums and twang the guitars.”

Davis, on the other hand, maintained that the name was his. “I want to get this out of the public's mind as far as the band being Mick Fleetwood's band,” he said . “This band has always been my band.”

September 1974: The original members of Fleetwood Mac reunite.

Fleetwood, the McVies, and Welch decided to relocate from England to the United States. After ditching Davis, the band didn’t replace him. Fleetwood Mac became the only major rock act to manage themselves , Rolling Stone reported at the time.

While the legal battle wasn’t over yet, they signed a new contract with Warner Bros. and released their ninth album, Heroes Are Hard to Find , as Fleetwood Mac. The suit was reportedly settled out of court four years later.

December 1974: Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham join the band.

christine mcvie and john mcvie and mick fleetwood and stevie nicks

Fleetwood visited Sound City Studios in Los Angeles. After Keith Olsen, a recording engineer, played Fleetwood “Frozen Love” by the duo Buckingham Nicks, he was captivated by their talent.

While at the studio, Fleetwood met Lindsey Buckingham and asked if he would join the band. Buckingham agreed on one condition: if his girlfriend, Stevie Nicks, could join too. They officially became apart of Fleetwood Mac on New Year's Eve 1974 . Welch departed the group to pursue a solo career.

In 1975, Fleetwood Mac released their second self-titled album. It sold over half a million copies within the year, and it featured two major hits written by Nicks: “Landslide” and “Rhiannon.”

February 1976: Fleetwood Mac begins working on Rumours .

Despite the success of their latest album, stardom took its toll on the members of Fleetwood Mac. The McVies’ marriage dissolved, Buckingham and Nicks broke up, and Fleetwood struggled with drug use.

Meanwhile, the band was hard at work on Rumours . Personal turmoil fueled the album's production. The McVies only spoke to each other to discuss music, and Buckingham and Nicks penned soon-to-be hit singles “Dreams” and “Go Your Own Way” as digs at each other. Christine also began a romantic relationship with the band's lighting designer, Curry Grant. She wrote “You Make Loving Fun” about her new fling.

Rumours became Fleetwood Mac's most successful album. It charted at number one for over 30 weeks.

February 1977: The Rumours tour begins.

fleetwood mac performs in atlanta

The band’s interpersonal drama continued as they headed out on a worldwide tour. Nicks fought with Buckingham after he mocked her on stage, and her cocaine habit became increasingly worse. Nicks’ addiction became more dangerous when a doctor discovered a dime-sized hole in her nasal cartilage big enough to cause a brain hemorrhage, which resulted from her putting aspirin dissolved in water up her nose to treat headaches.

Fleetwood briefly reconciled with Boyd—the couple remarried in 1977. Later that year, the drummer began an affair with Nicks. A Rolling Stone cover shoot the year prior, which featured the band all in bed together, “planted the seed,” according to Nicks . She and Fleetwood cuddle in bed in Annie Leibowitz's famous photograph. Fleetwood and Boyd divorced again in 1978.

1978: Fleetwood starts seeing Nicks’ friend.

In the midst of recording sessions for Tusk , Nicks discovered that Fleetwood started an affair with her good friend, Sara Recor. At the time, Recor was married to someone else.

“I lost Mick, which honestly wasn't that big of a deal because that was a rocky relationship,” said Nicks years later . “But losing my friend Sara? That was a huge blow. Sara was banished from the studio by the rest of the band ... No one was speaking, and I wouldn't even look directly at Mick. That went on for months. And it was great fodder for writing! The songs poured out of us.”

Fleetwood and Recor married in 1988 then divorced in 1995.

1980: Nicks and Buckingham fight on stage.

Buckingham and Nicks had long been broken up, but tension still existed between the former couple. During a Tusk tour concert in New Zealand, Buckingham tried to trip Nicks and even threw his guitar at her.

Nicks recalled to Rolling Stone that they “stopped the show” after the incident, and then a fight broke out backstage. “He went off, and we all ran at breakneck speed back to the dressing room to see who could kill him first. Christine got to him first, and then I got to him second–the bodyguards were trying to get in the middle of all of us.”

McVie recalled of standing up to Buckingham, “I think he’s the only person I ever, ever slapped.”

July 1981: Nicks launches her solo career.

Nicks released her debut solo album, Bella Donna , which contained hits like “Edge of Seventeen,” while still technically a member of Fleetwood Mac. Featuring collaborations with artists like Tom Petty and Don Henley of The Eagles, the album went number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart.

The title track, she told Rolling Stone , is “about making a lot of decisions in my life, making a change based on the turmoil in my soul.” She added, “I’m thirty-three years old, and my life has been very up and down in the last six years.”

March 1984: Fleetwood files for bankruptcy.

While many speculated that the drummer’s financial troubles stemmed from spending millions on drugs , ’s lawyer, Mickey Shapiro, denied this : “[Mick] is not in the classic sense a heavy roller. He’s not on the Beverly Hills Diet–champagne and cocaine.”

Late 1986: Nicks goes to rehab.

After finishing a solo tour, Nicks checked herself into Betty Ford to treat her cocaine addiction.

September 1987: Buckingham quits Fleetwood Mac.

Just ahead of their Tango in the Night tour, Buckingham announced he was leaving the band . He told Rolling Stone at the time that he intended to continue pursuing his solo career after producing the Tango in the Night album . “It was always our understanding that upon completion I would return to my solo work in progress,” he said.

With his exit, the group hired new guitarists Billy Burnette and Rick Vito.

September 1990: Nicks and Christine McVie leave Fleetwood Mac.

fleetwood mac

Nicks and McVie announced they would leave Fleetwood Mac at the end of their current tour, which would conclude in December that year. Nicks would go on to pursue her solo career, while McVie, according to the band’s publicist, would still record with Fleetwood Mac but no longer tour with them.

“The band had a series of very heartfelt conversations regarding the split-up,” publicist Mitchell Schneider said at the time. “Everybody is working together.”

But for Nicks, her exit reportedly stemmed from the track “Silver Springs.” The song was originally recorded for Rumours , but it didn’t end up making the album. Nicks planned on including the song on her 1991 greatest hits album, Timespace , but Fleetwood refused . Instead, he used it on 25 Years — The Chain , a two-disc box set released in 1992. This disagreement led to Nicks’ quitting the band.

January 1993: The band gets back together for Bill Clinton's inauguration.

Buckingham, Fleetwood, Nicks, and the McVies reunited to perform at Clinton’s inaugural ball.

That year, Nicks re-entered rehab , this time for a Klonopin addiction.

May-August 1997: Fleetwood Mac reunite on The Dance .

Recorded in May and released in August, The Dance was a live album from the group's reunion shows in Burbank, featuring Buckingham, Fleetwood, Nicks, and John and Christine McVie. The record marked their first release since Tango in the Night a decade earlier.

1998: Christine McVie leaves Fleetwood Mac.

“I think that I was probably just burned out when I left and I was frightened to fly,” she said, per People . But 16 years later, she returned in 2014 to tour with the band. By then she was living quietly in England after releasing some of her own solo music, but she missed being onstage.

“The truth of the matter is the only people I wanted to play with were the people I had played with all my life – these guys – Fleetwood Mac,” she said upon her return.

April 2018: Buckingham leaves Fleetwood Mac for the second time.

After rejoining in 1997, the guitarist and vocalist was fired from the band after a disagreement over touring commitments.

October 2018: Buckingham sues Fleetwood Mac.

Buckingham levied multiple charges against his former bandmates, including breach of fiduciary duty, breach of oral contract, and intentional interference with prospective economic advantage.

A representative for the band denied any wrongdoing . “Fleetwood Mac strongly disputes the allegations presented in Mr. Buckingham’s complaint and looks forward to their day in court,” they said.

The lawsuit was settled two months later, however, no details were publicly disclosed.

June 2022: Fleetwood Mac “kind of” break up.

In an interview with Rolling Stone , Christine discussed the possibility of a farewell tour. While the keyboardist said she didn't “feel physically up for it,” she shared her hopes for Buckingham’s return.

“I’d always want Lindsey back,” she said. “He’s the best."

Christine also revealed that Fleetwood Mac had unofficially split following their 2018/2019 world tour. “We’ve kind of broke up now, so I hardly ever see them,” she said of her fellow bandmates.

February 2023: Fleetwood says a reunion is off the table.

65th annual grammy awards arrivals

In November 2022, Christine McVie died at age 79 after suffering “a short illness.” Her family broke the news on social media .

Months later, Mick Fleetwood spoke to reporters at the 2023 Grammys. He said a Fleetwood Mac reunion was “ unthinkable ” following Christine’s death.

“I truly think the line in the sand has been drawn with the loss of Chris,” he explained. “I’d say we’re done, but then we’ve all said that before.”

That evening, Fleetwood performed a heartfelt tribute to Christine alongside Bonnie Raitt and Sheryl Crow.

Eagles / fleetwood mac dream pairing eyed for stadiums.

I saw the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac in Pittsburgh at Three Rivers Stadium, with Boz Scaggs July 24, 1976

The author needs to get their "facts" straight- I saw the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac (along with Loggins & Messina and Dan Fogelberg) at Tampa stadium on July 4th 1976. The date is impossible to forget.

Yeah, the facts are wrong. I was at that Schaefer Stadium concert the author mentions, but I remember it was part of a tour where the two bands would trade off who played first and who played second. The Eagles closed out the Foxboro concert.

saw the Eagles,Fleetwood Mac.Loggins and Messina-July 4th 1976 at Tampa Stadium-best concert ever

I was at that concert in Foxboro in 1976. Fleetwood Mac opened, the Eagles closed (it was billed as Fleetwood Mac and the Eagles). It was part of a tour.

Too bad we lost Glenn Frey. Without him a Eagles-Mac concert today could just not be the real deal. I was at the July 4 1976 Tampa Stadium concert and still get goose bumps recalling how very special it was. Rhiannon and Peaceful Easy Feeling - perfection as the sun was setting.

Oh yes I had just moved to Florida and had to be there. Awesome

I was at Foxboro, Boz Skags opened. Then Mac Closed withe the eagles. We were right in front.Remember snake dance to james dean and some one building a fire in the grand stand towards the end

I saw the same show in Pittsburgh Three Rivers stadium as well....She BELTED out a version of Rhiannon that ROCKED !

Me too!! Great fireworks by the Eagles

WRONG!! The Eagles CLOSED!! Boz Scaggs opened and we missed him. I was on the field about 50 feet from the stage on my friend Paul Lyons shoulders. It amazed me that people were actually sitting in the stands at the very tippy top when there was loads of space on the field. Those were the days!! Coolers, ‘joints’ it was a BLAST! Literally lost my voice for days after. The best concert I have ever been to save Stevie Ray Vaughan and The Fabulous Thunderbirds at the Orpheum Theater, Boston Nov 24 1986, 3rd row center aisle seats were awesome and free.

Wow!! What a show(s)!!

I was there too … Boz Scaggs was the opening act… then Fleetwood Mac then the Eagles… if memory serves first Tour with Joe Walsh as an Eagle…

I remember seeing Fleetwood Mac open for The Eagles at Greensboro Coliseum in 1977. Anyone else remember this.

I saw Fleetwood Mac open for the Eagles in Atlanta in 1975. I’m a big Eagles fan no one had heard of Fleetwood but they topped the Eagles that night.

Saw Fleetwood Mac open for the Eagles at Miami baseball stadium 1977

Your so lucky. We missed Boz scaggs too due to tailgating. I unfortunately got split up from my 3 best friends bc some very annoying & dorky guy wouldn't leave me alone and somehow got me lost from them; so I ended up on the dayum Top bleacher against the wall with the jerky guy and had no clue there was room below? 😭 Was so mad bc I couldn't even enjoy it with my friends and I don't even know how we ever reconnected afterwards, w. no cell phones, plus we had to park one mile away w. my friends carrying those old red metal Coleman coolers bc I'd had 6 major hip & spine surgeries 9mos b4 + was not in great shape to be walking around much, but did it and don't regret it. Glad you had the best time ever because those days are pretty much gone in today's evil society, unfortunately! Eagles absolutely closed: they made a grand entrance by + flew in via 🚁 -remember?

I saw the Eagles open for Fleetwood Mac at the Omni in Atlanta.

I was there. This was my third concert ever. I sat way back in the bleechers and it was rather chaotic. It was an all-day event with Santana and The Beach Boys in the line up. Tickets were cheap, like $ 5 or $ 6. Quite an event....

I was there, too ! In the bleachers. It was a long day, hot but the music was great. 45 years ago... Lord have mercy. Santana was awesome.

It’s On! Eagles, Fleetwood Mac to Headline Classic East and West

eagles fleetwood mac tour 1976

Update (April 7, 2017): Reminder… Tickets go on sale today at 10 a.m. local time for The Classic Concerts. For the Classic East click here . For the Classic West…  here .

Our story from when the news broke on March 29…

The old adage “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” certainly applies here. Ever since earlier this month (March 2) when  Billboard first reported of a pair of classic rock festivals headlined by the  Eagles and  Fleetwood Mac , details kept emerging with specific dates and then full lineups. Today (March 29), the rumors (or is that  rumours ?) were confirmed.

The events, billed as The Classic East at New York City’s Citi Field and The Classic West at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium, were formally announced with the lineups just as they had been reported.

The Classic West comes first with the Eagles headlining Saturday, July 15, with support by  Steely Dan and the  Doobie Brothers . On Sunday, July 16, Fleetwood Mac headlines, with  Journey and  Earth, Wind & Fire opening.

Two weeks’ later, the same bill arrives at Citi Field on July 29-30.

Mick Fleetwood told  The New York Times that he had been in attendance last October at Desert Trip. “I was there like a stalker fan,” Fleetwood said. “And it was so cool! It was emotionally charged.”

As the announcement breathlessly states: “The Classic East (and The Classic West) will be the first time in history that these six esteemed artists have ever played together on the same stage in two of America’s greatest cities for rock & roll.”

If you’re a new  Best Classic Bands  reader, we’d be grateful if you would Like our  Facebook  page and/or bookmark our  Home page .

Tickets for the general public will be available starting Friday, April 7 at 10 a.m. local time or by phone at 1-800-745-3000. There is an eight-ticket limit per person. Prices range from $150 to $950 for both nights at each venue. No single day tickets are being sold.

Though the organizers are not calling it a festival, it certainly has that vibe. Parking lots will open at 2 p.m., gates at 3:30. The shows are scheduled to begin at 5, rain or shine.

eagles fleetwood mac tour 1976

Of the parallels in the two headliners’ careers, Fleetwood said to the  Times : “The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac were sort of dueling bands in many ways. We all knew each other and all hung out together in the early days.”

Fleetwood Mac Songs That Don't Stop Adding to the Band's Success

F leetwood Mac began as a blues-infused rock band in 1967, but it wasn't until the mid-1970s when Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined that they became rock legends.

Fleetwood Mac has sold 120 million albums worldwide (and counting), and their success has given them a collective net worth of $480 million.

Year released: 1977

Album: Rumours

Bottom line: Most of the songs on "Rumours" reflect the fracturing of the band members' relationships. "The Chain" is one such example.

Different studio tracks were pieced together to complete the song, but the lyrics are all Stevie Nicks, who wrote them about Lindsey  Buckingham as they were splitting up.

Nicks and Buckingham share lead vocals on the song, the only one credited to all five members.

Year released: 1979

Album: Tusk

Bottom line: "Sara," written and sung by Stevie Nicks, peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard singles chart in 1979.

The song was, in part, written about Nicks' romance with drummer Mick Fleetwood after she and Buckingham broke up. Her friend, Sara, married Fleetwood, effectively ending their romantic relationship.

Nicks' former boyfriend Eagles member Don Henley also claimed that the song is an ode to their unborn child . Nicks said, "Had I married Don and had that baby, and had she been a girl, I would have named her Sara."

Over My Head

Year released: 1975

Album: Fleetwood Mac

Bottom line: Christine McVie penned and sang this 1975 track off of the band's self-titled album.

The song was not written from McVie's own experience (she was married to John McVie at the time), but it does tell the tale of having a relationship with a man whose moods turn on a dime, and a woman whose heart overrules her head.

While the band had been together since 1967 (with different members, except John McVie and Mick Fleetwood), this was the first Fleetwood Mac song to chart in the U.S.

Year released: 1987

Album: Tango in the Night

Bottom line: Lindsey Buckingham wrote and performed "Big Love." It was originally for a solo album as the group had parted ways by 1985, but Christine McVie convinced band members to give things another go.

During the sessions, however, Buckingham and Nicks were not getting along. She was mostly absent from the recording, and he left the band again soon after. However, the song went to No. 5 and jump-started the band's career in the late 1980s.

It was not played live until a decade later.

Little Lies

Bottom line: The third single from "Tango in the Night," McVie penned the song with then-husband, Eddy Quintela.

When it was released, it went to the top position on the Billboard Adult Contemporary for four weeks and is the band's most recent hit.

Teen icon Hillary Duff also recorded a version of the song in 2016.

Year released: 1979

Bottom line: Recorded with the USC Trojan Marching Band (who recorded their part in Dodger Stadium in 1979 — each marching band member received a dollar for their effort), this unusual single was a departure for the band. It was based off on a Lindsey Buckingham riff used during soundchecks.

The song was the first single from the album of the same name. It reached No. 8 on the U.S. Billboard charts.

Say You Love Me

Year released: 1975

Bottom line: Another Christine McVie penned classic, "Say You Love Me" was one of the first the new incarnation of the band (with the addition of Buckingham and Stevie Nicks) rehearsed together.

Peaking at No. 11 for three weeks on the Billboard charts, it helped the album, which sold 8 million copies, hit the top of the charts in the U.S., and further cemented the band's reputation as rock icons.

You Make Loving Fun

Year released: 1977

Bottom line: This Christine McVie song is the fourth single from "Rumours."

During the album's recording, her marriage to bassist John McVie was ending, and she started seeing the band's lighting technician, Curry Grant, which is who the song is about. (Her ex assumed it was about their dogs.)

The song peaked at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Year released: 1982

Album: Mirage

Bottom line: Christine McVie didn't typically write songs about her personal relationships, but "Hold Me" was an exception.

The song, co-written with singer/songwriter Robbie Patton, was inspired by her relationship Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson. They had broken up a little before it was written, and he died in a tragic drowning accident a year after its release.

"Hold Me" became one of the band's biggest hits in the U.S., peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard charts for seven weeks.

Bottom line: Stevie Nicks wrote this classic when she was in her early 20s and still with Lindsey Buckingham, but they were already having problems, as they were not yet successful in music. She wondered if she should stay or go back to school and get a normal job.

When "Landslide" was released as a single in 1975, it wasn't a huge hit, but it has since become one of the band's signature songs.

Smashing Pumpkins, Tori Amos, and the Dixie Chicks have all covered it.

Bottom line: This Stevie Nicks song was written as a tribute to her closest friend Robin Snyder Anderson, who died of cancer a year or so before it was released. In it, she also waxes nostalgic about her days before fame and her relationship with Lindsey Buckingham.

The video for the song was picked to be MTV's first-ever "world premiere" of a music video, and it reached No. 12 on the U.S. charts.

Bottom line: In concert, Stevie Nicks would introduce Rhiannon as "a song about a Welsh witch." The idea for it came from "Triad," a novel by Mary Bartlet Leader about a woman possessed by a witch named Rhiannon.

The song peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard charts in 1976 and has been voted one of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" by "Rolling Stone" magazine.

Bottom line: "Don't Stop" is Christine McVie's ode to looking toward the future after her divorce from John McVie. The song peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, when it was released as a single in 1977.

But it took on new meaning — and more in sales — when Bill Clinton became president. The band was all but broken up when he won, but he was able to get Fleetwood Mac to perform "Don't Stop" at the 1993 inaugural gala, essentially jump-starting the band's next chapter.

Go Your Own Way

Year released: 1976

Bottom line: "Go Your Own Way" was written by Lindsey Buckingham to soon-to-be ex-girlfriend Stevie Nicks, describing their impending breakup and was the first single from "Rumours."

Its pre-sale orders, at 800,000, were the largest in Warner Brothers' history at that time and helped "Rumours" reach 40 million units sold.

Album: Rumours

Bottom line: "Dreams" was the second single from "Rumours" and the band's biggest hit to date. It went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and stayed there for 31 weeks.

The song was written and sung by Stevie Nicks as an answer to Lindsey Buckingham’s “Go Your Own Way" as they were in the process of breaking up.

It has repeated its chart success several times since its release, most recently in October 2020, when TikToker Nathan Apodaca lip-synced to it while skateboarding and drinking cran-raspberry juice.
