Canada Has Just Issued A Travel Advisory For Maui & Here's What To Know About The Fires

I f you planning to head to Hawaii for your summer vacation, listen up. Canada has just issued a travel advisory for the island of Maui in the midst of wildfires .

In a travel advisory for the United States, which was updated on August 10, 2023, the Government of Canada has urged all Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to Maui due to ongoing wildfires

Maui now falls under the "avoid non-essential travel" risk level in the travel advisory and the Canadian government has told tourists their "safety and security could be at risk."

Those who are already in Maui have been asked to consider whether they actually need to be there.

"If you do not need to be there, you should think about leaving," the Canadian government said.

The government's travel advisory echoes messages from the Hawaii Tourism Authority , which has "strongly discouraged" travel to Maui right now.

Wildfires across parts of Maui were first reported on Tuesday, August 8, and are believed to have killed 36 people as of August 9, according to Maui County .

In an alert, the Hawaii Tourism Authority said the wildfires are burning in multiple areas of the island including Lahaina, Kihei, and Upcountry Maui and the Mauna Kea Resort area on Hawaiʻi Island, resulting in the evacuation of thousands of residents and visitors and the closure of some major roadways.

"Visitors who have travel plans to West Maui in the coming weeks are encouraged to consider rescheduling their travel plans for a later time," the Hawaii Tourism Authority said.

Canadian airlines have also been responding to the fires in Maui, signalling that flights will be impacted.

On August 9, WestJet announced there may be delays and cancellations for flights to Maui between August 9 and August 17, 2023.

The airline added there would be flexible change and cancellation guidelines for those due to be travelling to Maui.

In an update online on August 10, Air Canada said flights to Maui may be impacted.

The airline told Narcity in a statement that it cancelled a flight to Maui from Vancouver on Tuesday. Last night, it ran a "ferry flight" to collect passengers from Maui, which arrived back in Vancouver this morning.

A second ferry flight is scheduled for the evening of August 10.

"We continue to monitor the Maui situation very closely as this is an evolving situation. Air Canada has put in place a flexible goodwill policy for passengers travelling to and from Maui," the airline added.

Traveling to Hawaii with a Pre-Travel Test Result

Quarantine bypass permitted.

  • Travelers who, upon entry into the state, provide written confirmation from a state-approved COVID-19 testing facility of a negative test result from a test administered to the traveler within 72 hours from the final leg of departure, will be able to bypass Hawaii’s mandatory quarantine order.
  • More information about state-approved testing and the current approved & trusted testing partners can be found on our new page Hawaii Covid Testing and Procedures →
  • To reiterate, the test result must be done prior to arrival and the traveler must present evidence of this test upon arrival.
  • As of  July 8, 2021 ,  all travelers  vaccinated in the U.S.  are now able to travel via trans-Pacific routes  without a pre-travel test . As of July 8th, travelers entering the state who have been vaccinated in the U.S. may bypass the quarantine without a pre-travel test. Proof of vaccination will be required. See our Hawaii Health Passport page for more information.
  • All Hawaii Travel Restrictions may be dropped once the state of Hawaii reaches a 70% statewide vaccination rate, using local state data, not national data (as seen on the news).
  • Travelers will be able to upload their negative test result when they complete their travel and health forms ( the health form requirement ends January 4, 2022 ) on the Safe Travels digital system: travel.hawaii.gov
  • All travelers wishing to bypass the 5-day (number of required days changed on January 3, 2022) mandatory quarantine must have their negative COVID-19 test results, from a trusted testing partner , prior to departure  for the state of Hawaii. If test results are not available before boarding the final leg of the trip, the traveler must quarantine for 5 days (number of required days changed on January 3, 2022), or the length of their stay , whichever is shorter.
  • Travelers (including children who are 5 years or older ) will be subject to the pre-test requirement.
  • No testing will be provided upon arrival at the airport! Travelers (returning residents and visitors) are not able to test upon arrival in Hawaii because this is a  pre-travel testing program.
  • The Hawaii State Dept. of Agriculture paper form continues to be distributed to passengers during flights and is still required to be completed prior to arrival.
  • For visitors who cannot provide evidence of a negative test result , the 5-day quarantine will remain in effect . If the quarantine is refused, the passenger must make arrangements to leave the island immediately without leaving the airport.
  • The pre-test is one part of a multi-layered screening process that includes arrival temperature checks, completion of the State Travel and Health form, and secondary screening for those with symptoms or temperatures of 100.4 degrees or higher.

Traveling to Hawaii without Pre-Travel Test Result

5-day quarantine required.

Effective March 26, 2020,  and until further notice Hawaii Governor David Ige is mandating all visitors arriving in the Hawaiian Islands to self-quarantine for 5 days . This means all passengers traveling to Hawaii (visitors and returning residents) must self-quarantine for 5 days (number of required days changed on January 3, 2022) following arrival.

Beginning July 8, 2021, all travelers vaccinated within the U.S. will be able to travel via trans-Pacific routes without a pre-travel test. Beginning July 8th, travelers entering the state who have been vaccinated in the U.S. may bypass the quarantine without a pre-travel test. The steps to follow for the vaccine exemptions are included here .

  • The new online Safe Travels application is now mandatory for all travelers. The application can be found by clicking here .
  • For more information, see our updated section about the new  Safe Travels program .
  • According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, visitors who are required to self-quarantine for 5 days must designate a hotel or motel as their designated quarantine location.
  • The state of Hawaii’s  Department of Transportation Website further explains the entrance and quarantine process.
  • No person who is subject to the mandatory self-quarantine is allowed to stay in a short-term or vacation rental . This is according to data from the Hawaii Tourism Authority (HTA).
  • Additionally, operations that rent vehicles may not rent to any person who is subject to a 5-day traveler quarantine order unless an exemption is granted.
  • Violation of the quarantine will be a misdemeanor and subject to a possible fine and/or jail time.
  • The quarantine mandate will continue until further notice for all arrivals, and visitors are responsible for quarantine costs.

Our Advice on Visiting Hawaii

For any travelers who cannot provide proof of negative test result prior to departure or for travelers that do not have a valid vaccine exemption under the current rules  - provided this would mean that the visitor(s) would need to remain in their rooms for most or all of their vacation, we are strongly recommend travelers to postpone any trips to Hawaii until they can properly be tested or immunized for COVID-19 before departing for Hawaii.

Inter-island Travel in Hawaii

At a news conference on June 4, 2021, Governor David Ige announced that beginning  June 15, 2021 , traveling inter-island within Hawaii will no longer require a pre-travel test and there will be no quarantine requirements for inter-island travel. There will be no restrictions flying between islands within Hawaii.

Facemasks in Hawaii...

All travelers to Hawaii should always wear a mask while visiting Hawaii during the COVID-19 pandemic, not only because it's the right way to show Aloha, but also because in all indoor situations, wearing a mask is required by law. Governor David Ige has now implemented a statewide mask mandate in Hawaii. Unless you are in your room/house/condo, at the beach, or actively eating in a restaurant, you should wear a mask while in Hawaii, especially if you cannot properly socially distance (six feet minimum).

At this time, everyone must officially wear face masks in all indoor public spaces in Hawaii.

  • May 2021 Update:  In late May, Governor Ige announced that  masks are no longer required outdoors , and that ocean sports would again be allowed in Hawaii. The Governor also added the amended outdoor mask rules are effective immediately and apply to everyone, regardless of vaccination status.  Masks are still required for all indoor activities  ― across the board. Travelers and residents can read more on this story in the  local news .

Canada issues advisory against non-essential travel to Maui due to wildfires

Global Affairs Canada has issued an advisory against non-essential travel to Maui, Hawaii as historic wildfires rage across the island.

The rapidly spreading wildfires are destroying sections of the island and have forced evacuations in some areas, including the popular tourist spot of Lahaina.

Jérémie Bérubé, a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada, told CTVNews.ca that the federal department is closely monitoring the wildfires in Hawaii and consular officials are in contact with affected Canadians and family members.

  • Climate Barometer newsletter: Sign up for more on how a warming planet impacts you

“Canadians are strongly advised to exercise caution, monitor local news and weather reports and to follow the instructions of local authorities, including evacuation orders,” Bérubé said in a written statement.

Officials in Hawaii warned Thursday that the death toll -- already at 36 -- could rise, with the fires still burning and search and rescue teams spreading out to search charred areas.

So far, Global Affairs Canada is “not aware of any Canadians who have been killed or injured as a result of these wildfires,” Bérubé said.

On Thursday, Minister of Foreign Affairs Melanie Joly issued a statement of support for everyone affected by Hawaii’s fires.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer our heartfelt condolences to those who have lost family and friends and wish those who were injured a quick recovery,” Joly said in the statement.

“Our thoughts are with the people of Hawaii in this distressing time.”

Joly added that the U.S. is Canada’s “most important friend and ally,” and Canada stands “by their side as both countries battle unprecedented wildfires.”

The National Weather Service says Hurricane Dora, which is passing south of the island chain at a safe distance, was partly to blame for strong winds, which are driving the flames, knocking out power and grounding firefighting helicopters.

Canadians in need of emergency consular assistance may contact Global Affairs' Emergency Watch and Response Centre by calling +1 613 996 8885, texting +1 613-686-3658, via Telegram at Canada Emergency Abroad, via WhatsApp at +1 613-909-8881, or via Signal at +1-613-909-8087.

Insecticide spraying

As a Canadian registered air carrier, WestJet is required by several countries to spray insecticide in the flight deck and guest cabin prior to traveling to those countries. This is a preventative measure against the importation of foreign insects that may carry disease or damage crops.

WestJet uses Permethrin #216, an insecticide approved by the World Health Organization (WHO) for application onboard commercial aircraft. According to the WHO, short-term exposure when spraying this insecticide has not been found to cause any adverse health effects.

Keep yourself safe from fraud by being aware of the tactics scammers use. If you think you’ve been the target of fraud, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.

Email phishing, fake ads, fake social media accounts, and telephone scams are used to lure people into giving out personal information such as credit card numbers and account login credentials. These scams impersonate trusted brands to appear authentic.

How to protect yourself from fraud

  • Keep your username and password confidential — a real WestJet representative will never ask for this information
  • If you need to contact us, always use our  official toll-free number
  • Keep your credit card information confidential (outside of making a purchase from a trusted, secure website or phone line)
  • Avoid clicking links or opening attachments in unsolicited emails
  • Consider adding “ call control ” to your phone plan

How to spot common types of fraud

Email phishing scams.

Phishing involves sending phony email messages to trick recipients into sharing sensitive information. These scams often ask for personal information such as usernames, passwords and email addresses — WestJet will never ask you to share any of this information through an email. Phishing scams may also make a false claim that your account is in urgent need of attention. Links in these emails will take you to a spoofed site, used to steal your credit card, account or other personal information. Avoid clicking on any attachments to these emails as they may have viruses or spyware.

Signs of a phony email are:

  • a false claim you’ve won a prize or flight
  • a false claim there’s a problem with your account that needs "fixing"
  • the existence of typos or poor grammar, spellings such as "Westjet" instead of "WestJet"

The fraudster’s email address might look authentic, and the message may have official-looking links or documents and have our company colours and logo. If you have any doubts, report it to the  Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre .

Fraudulent online surveys and flight giveaways

There are scammers pretending to represent WestJet who — in exchange for completing a survey and sharing it with your social network — claim they cheap sell flight tickets or give them away for free. These are often posts created by a fake WestJet account on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter, with the intent of gaining a large following and selling the account for profit.

If you’re interacting with us on social media, make sure it’s an official WestJet account:

Twitter: @WestJet

Facebook: @westjet

LinkedIn: WestJet

Instagram: @westjet

Snapchat: @westjet

Search engine ads

Scammers will buy ad space on Google or other search engines to target people searching terms like “WestJet contact info” with the intent of providing false contact information. Once you call the number provided in these fraudulent ads, the scammers will impersonate a WestJet representative and try to steal credit card numbers, personal information, or account credentials. Fake ads like this can be found on social networks like Facebook as well.

If you’re searching for our contact information via Google, Bing or any other search engine, take care to avoid clicking on any listings identified as ads.

Social media ads

Fraudsters will use fake social media contests or giveaways to solicit personal information from “winners” or to gain social media followers, with the intention of selling the social media account. These tactics will often require you to follow a specific social media account and/or to share something with your friends on Facebook or followers on Instagram in exchange for a free flight or vacation package.

While WestJet does offer the chance to win flights or vacation packages from time to time, we will always comply with sweepstakes laws by providing contest eligibility requirements, a contest end date and a link to the official contest rules.

Phone scams

Auto-dialer scam.

Scammers will auto-dial thousands of numbers at once. If you answer their call, you’ll be transferred to a live person in an attempt to steal credit card or other personal information.

Misdial traps

Guests trying to reach WestJet by phone have found themselves in the ‘Misdial Trap’ — a scheme used by fraudsters to profit off people misdialing our phone number. Fraudsters will then pose as WestJet employees to steal personal information and credit card details.

When you’re contacting us by phone, use only these numbers — and please dial carefully.

Travel health notices

The Public Health Agency of Canada’s (PHAC) travel health notices outline potential health risks to Canadian travellers and recommend ways to help reduce them. Notices remain in effect until removed from the website.

No matter where you plan to travel, make sure you check the Travel Advice and Advisories (TAA) page for your destination. These pages contain country-specific information on health risks, safety and security, local laws and customs, entry requirements, and other important travel information. It is recommended that you check the TAA page for your destination twice: once when you are planning your trip, and again shortly before you leave. Health, safety and security conditions may change between the date you book your travel and your departure date.

The travel health notice risk levels are:

Level 1: Practise health precautions

Level 2: Practise enhanced health precautions

Level 3: Avoid non-essential travel

Level 4: Avoid all travel

Travel health notice risk levels

Level 1 - practise health precautions.

  • avoiding insect bites
  • practising proper hand washing
  • being up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations

Level 2 - Practise enhanced health precautions

  • the use of personal protective equipment
  • delaying travel until risk is lower
  • additional recommended vaccinations for some groups
  • avoiding higher-risk activities

Level 3 - Avoid non-essential travel

A level 3 travel health notice warns travellers to avoid non-essential travel to the destination. There is a high risk to the traveller’s health. If travellers must travel for essential reasons, they are advised to follow the precautions outlined in the travel health notice to reduce their risk.

Level 4 – Avoid all travel

A level 4 travel health notice advises travellers not to travel to the destination, for any reason. There is a very high risk to both travellers and Canadians domestically.

Flights between Vancouver and Maui cancelled as wildfire burns across Hawaiian island

Westjet has rescheduled flights for friday. air canada looking at options.

canada travel advisory hawaii

Social Sharing

Several flights between Vancouver and Maui have been cancelled, according to Canadian airlines, as a wildfire tears across the Hawaiian island.

At least six people have been killed as a result of the fire, which has forced residents and tourists alike to flee. Thomson Reuters reports that some people were forced to jump into the ocean to escape the smoke and fire, and winds from a nearby hurricane continued to fan the flames and increase fire behaviour.

A WestJet spokesperson confirmed that two flights from YVR International Airport to Kahului, flight numbers WS1852 and WS1853, were cancelled Wednesday, adding that flights are being rescheduled for Friday, Aug. 11. The airline says it's working to notify passengers of these plans.

In response to the Maui wildfires, a travel advisory has been posted on flights and vacation packages and flexible change/cancel guidelines have been announced for all guests travelling to Kahului, Maui, between Aug. 9 and 11, 2023.

  • Wildfire 'apocalypse' kills 6 on Hawaii's Maui island

"We continue to monitor the situation closely and will make operational changes in the name of safety as necessary," WestJet said. "All guests currently in the region are advised to follow all response instructions provided by local authorities."

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Air Canada told CBC Wednesday that Tuesday's flight from Maui to Vancouver was cancelled because the fire was impeding access to the airport.

"We are evaluating other options, including the opportunity to operate an evening flight with a larger aircraft to accommodate all affected passengers, pending airport access and other operational considerations," they said.

Air Canada currently has one flight daily between Vancouver and Maui.

'Confluence of factors'

Strong winds and dry conditions have contributed to a perfect storm for wildfire behaviour in Maui, similar to what B.C. has experienced this year.

Kaniela Ing, national director of the Green New Deal Network and former Hawaii state representative, told CBC's On The Coast that hundreds of homes and buildings have been damaged.

"When I went to bed last night, it was like one building, maybe two buildings," he said.

Ing, who was born and raised on Maui, said that growing up, the idea of wildfires sweeping through his community was "absurd."

canada travel advisory hawaii

"But now it makes sense. It also is the result of really bad land management by corporate actors who have taken over our politics at times and just developed and took out all the agriculture and the natural vegetation that would buffer against natural disasters," he said.

"There's like a confluence of factors that I think landed its way to this tragedy."

'I'm worried'

Kirstie Carlson, who is originally from B.C. but now lives in Kula, Maui, happened to be visiting family on Cortes Island when the fire broke out.

She says her home is very close to where the fire started. Her boyfriend, Mark Klemens, and their six cats fled on Tuesday evening.

He texted her to let her know what was going on.

"I completely freaked out," Carlson said. "I'm worried."

  • CBC Explains So your flight got cancelled — here's what you need to know about compensation

Carlson says Klemens later returned home, where he found their home was safe, but a neighbour's home was completely destroyed.

Feeling that the coast was clear, Carlson says Klemens brought the cats back home, only to learn another fire had broke out nearby late Wednesday afternoon.

She said she feels helpless being in B.C. while her boyfriend and neighbours are dealing with the fire.

"I don't know what to do."

Update from HTA as Canada posts Maui travel advisory; WS extends Hawaii change policy

Post date: Aug 11 2023

Date: Aug 11 2023

By: The Associated Press

TORONTO — Search and rescue efforts continue in Lahaina, as Maui and the state of Hawaii try to come to terms with the damage and human toll wrought by wildfires.

The Lahaina wildfire is still active and the number of deaths on the island has increased to 55, according to Maui County.

Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen Jr. surveyed the damage in Lahaina yesterday. “The closest thing I think I can compare it to is perhaps a war zone, or maybe a bomb went off,” he told ABC’s ‘Good Morning America’ this morning. “It was cars in the street, doors open, melted to the ground. Most structures no longer exist. And from blocks and blocks of this.”

WESTJET UPDATE & GOVT. TRAVEL ADVISORY

As reported yesterday , airlines including Air Canada and WestJet brought in flexible change policies for passengers flying in and out of Kahului Airport (OGG). WestJet has extended its policy, originally for Aug. 9 – 11, to be in effect through Aug. 31. More details can be found here.

Meanwhile the Canadian government has updated its travel advice for travellers heading to Hawaii. At its U.S. Travel Advice page, the Canadian government is advising Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to Maui due to the wildfires. The advisory can be found here.

NEW INFO FROM THE HAWAII TOURISM AUTHORITY

In other news, the Hawaii Tourism Authority has updated the info post on its site.

The HTA says that through the tireless efforts of airline, hotel, and ground transportation partners, more than 14,000 people were moved off the island of Maui on Wednesday, to either return home or continue with their vacation elsewhere in Hawaii. “By the end of [Thursday], it is estimated that an additional 14,500 people will be moved off Maui. Mahalo to all of our industry partners for this monumental show of support.”

An emergency assistance centre has been established by the Hawaii Tourism Authority at the Hawaii Convention Center, in partnership with the American Red Cross, to support visitors and residents being evacuated from Maui to Oahu due to the wildfires. Up to 2,000 evacuees can be provided temporary accommodations at the Hawaii Convention Center until they are able to board flights to return home or secure their own hotel lodging.

U.S. President Joe Biden has signed a Major Disaster Declaration for Hawaii, resulting in the approval to dedicate more federal resources to help with recovery efforts underway for Maui and Hawaii Island.

On Hawaii Island, Hawaii County officials have lifted all evacuation orders. Mauna Kea Resort is open and operating. “Mahalo to the firefighters and first responders for their tremendous efforts in stopping the fires from spreading and keeping everyone safe on Hawaii Island,” says the HTA.

The HTA adds that anyone wanting to make donations to help communities and families recover on Maui can do so through the Maui Strong Fund established by the Hawaii Community Foundation. The link can be accessed here.

Travellers may have some room to change flights if they purchased tickets to Maui following wildfires that have devastated the Hawaiian island.

The tragedy is now the deadliest wildfire in U.S. history, claiming nearly 100 lives with the possibility of scores of more bodies to be discovered in the burn area.

Most flights between Vancouver International Airport (YVR) and Kahului Airport (OGG) on Maui had resumed by Monday, Aug. 14, allowing people who were trapped on the island a chance to leave.

Going the other direction, the Canadian government warns against travel to the island as its residents grapple with the aftermath of the blaze. Nearly every building was destroyed in centuries-old Lahaina, and the State of Hawaii declared a state of emergency on Aug. 9.

While the fires have retreated, authorities warn that toxic byproducts may remain, including in drinking water, after the flames spewed poisonous fumes. That has left many unable to return home.

What to do if you have booked Maui flights leaving soon

YVR's departures page shows two flights scheduled to leave from the airport en route to Maui on Tuesday, Aug. 15 evening. One is with WestJet, the other with Air Canada.

Air Canada says its customers can make alternative travel arrangements for free due to the Maui fires if they booked flights departing in August.

  • Eligible travellers must have purchased their ticket no later than Aug. 9 for travel until Aug. 31.
  • The original itinerary must include a flight to, from, or via Maui.

Flights during the affected period may be changed to another date up to Oct. 1, subject to availability in the booking class that was originally purchased. Otherwise, any fare difference will apply.

  • Retrieve your booking to see alternative dates.

Travellers may also change their itineraries to travel anytime to or from Honolulu (HNL) and additional charges and any fare difference will be waived, subject to availability in the class they originally purchased.  If you choose to cancel your flight, you will receive a full refund. If you purchased your ticket with  Air Canada Vacations , reach out to them directly.

For more information about the Air Canada Maui Advisory  visit its travel updates page.

WestJet will allow one-time changes and cancellations for free on eligible air-only bookings.

  • Travellers must have purchased their ticket no later than Aug. 9 for travel until Aug. 31.
  • Eligible destinations include Maui and Hawaii (the big island).
  • Flights must be wholly marketed and operated by WestJet, including Encore.

Travellers must request changes or cancellations more than two hours prior to departure. If these are made within two hours of travel, the standard fees apply.

  • If you change your travel dates to on or before Oct. 31 and go to the same destination or a geographically close destination, the difference in fare is waived and no change fee will be charged.
  • If you change your travel dates to travel after Oct. 31 to the same destination or a geographically close destination, no change fee will be charged but the difference in fare will apply.
  • You may book a new destination for free, but the difference in fare will apply and you must complete the exchange by Oct. 31.
  • Depending on the booking channel, non-refundable fares (excluding Basic fares) will remain as an open ticket for 13 months from the first coupon date or be returned to Corporate Travel Bank.
  • Basic fares are eligible for cancellation for no fee until Oct. 31.
  • Refundable fares may be returned to the original form of payment or remain as an open ticket for 13 months from the first coupon date.
  • Any portion paid with WestJet dollars will be returned to the traveller's account. Any portion paid with Travel Bank credit will be returned to the traveller's account and the original expiration date (if applicable) will apply.

For more information about the  WestJet travel Advisory, visit its Maui updates page .

What to consider about the Maui travel advisory if you must travel

Canada has issued an "avoid all non-essential travel" advisory for journeys to Maui.

Essential services could be disrupted during your visit, including transportation, power distribution, water and food supply, telecommunications networks, emergency services, and medical care.

If you are in the areas affected by the wildfires:

  • exercise caution
  • monitor local news and weather reports
  • follow the instructions of local authorities, including evacuation orders

While there is no advisory for other parts of Hawaii, locals have urged against travel due to an influx of tourism over the past years. Also, the other islands may see a surge in visitors right now as people evacuate Maui.

Hawaii Reopening to Canadian Travellers: What You Need to Know

Hawaii has been open to Canadian travellers since December 2020; however, its stricter entry requirements and intra-island travel restrictions have still kept many travellers at bay.

Following the US fully opening its borders on November 8, Hawaii has aligned its entry requirements accordingly, and will no longer require additional testing for US travellers.

Meanwhile, for those of us in Canada, travelling to Hawaii has gotten a lot simpler as of the same date, allowing us to enter Hawaii with a cheap and simple rapid antigen test.

Hawaii Travel Restrictions

Entry to Hawaii is only slightly more complex than entering the US mainland, with an additional Health Form required as part of the process.

How Can Canadians Enter Hawaii?

Travellers are allowed to enter Hawaii through all international airports and by sea via a cruise. As of October 2021, when departing Canada by air, travellers are required to present proof of vaccination .

Travellers coming from Canada must fulfill all of the following conditions before entering Hawaii:

  • Mixed vaccines are permitted.
  • Either a PCR or an antigen test will suffice.
  • Complete the Hawaii Safe Travels Form  prior to departure.

The Safe Travels Form requires uploading a COVID-19 test result or a vaccination record in order to obtain a QR code, which you’ll need to present upon landing.

A negative COVID-19 test result is required regardless of whether you fly non-stop to Hawaii or take a connecting flight:

  • If you fly directly to Hawaii from Canada, a test result will be required prior to your flight.
  • Meanwhile, if you connect through the continental US on the way to Hawaii, you’ll still need a test result to enter the United States on the first leg of your journey.

Testing & Quarantine Upon Return

Travellers must complete a negative molecular test within 72 hours of boarding their flight back to Canada.

This is fairly easy to obtain on all the Hawaii islands, although it can certainly be expensive.

Outside of Oahu, where the capital of Honolulu lies, expect COVID-19 testing appointments to be booked up in advance and cost around US$150. In Oahu, the usual suspects of CVS and Walgreens are available for free NAAT tests .

As of October 2021, Switch Health’s RT-LAMP Test Kit can also be ordered prior to your trip and self-administered within 72 hours of your return flight to Canada.

We’d recommend purchasing a Switch Health RT-LAMP Test Kit for the smoothest travel experience on your return journey. At $149 + tax, this is the same price if not cheaper than most testing options in Hawaii.

Fully vaccinated Canadians can return to Canada by air without undergoing quarantine , upon completing a negative test at the airport on arrival into Canada. Canadians are considered fully vaccinated if they’ve received a full series of one of (or a mix of) Health Canada’s approved vaccines – Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, or Johnson & Johnson – at least 14 days before entering Canada.

Current Health Requirements in Hawaii

Technically, each of Hawaii’s islands is allowed to impose their own restrictions; however, current restrictions are generally in line with each other. Masks are required in all indoor settings and not required in outdoor settings.

There are no capacity or lockdown restrictions to speak of, from social distancing to masking indoors to restaurants.

Since June, testing was no longer required for travel between the islands, either, meaning that island-hopping is well and truly back.

How to Get to Hawaii

Travelling to Hawaii on points has largely been a point of frustration for Canadian travellers, especially on the East Coast.

For the winter travel season, Air Canada will be operating the following routes:

  • Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver to Honolulu
  • Vancouver, Calgary, and Toronto to Maui
  • Vancouver to Kona

With Aeroplan , these routes will cost 25,000 Aeroplan points one-way in business class from Vancouver, and 35,000 Aeroplan points one-way in business class from everywhere else.

However, these prices correspond to the lower end of Aeroplan’s dynamic pricing on Air Canada flights, and it’s relatively rare to find flights that actually fall at the lower end of the spectrum.

Therefore, a trip to Hawaii would be an optimal use of eUpgrades earned as part of Aeroplan Elite Status , under the “Latitude Attitude” strategy . You could book the much more reasonably priced Economy Latitude flight and then apply eUpgrades to upgrade into business class.

In addition, Hawaii would also represent a great opportunity to use your Priority Rewards if you have any, allowing you to receive a 50% discount on eligible Aeroplan points redemptions.

For those on the West Coast, using British Airways Avios to fly Alaska Airlines’s routes to Hawaii is also a sweet spot, costing just 13,000 Avios in economy class each way from Seattle to Honolulu.

For those who seek a higher-value award booking, consider using Turkish Miles & Smiles to fly to Hawaii from anywhere in North America for just 10,000 miles one-way in economy class.

Turkish miles are best earned from Citi ThankYou points in the US, transferring at a ratio 0f 1:1, or by converting Marriott Bonvoy points at an optimal ratio of 60,000 Bonvoy points = 25,000 Turkish miles.

Hawaii has aligned its entry requirements to those of the United States at large. For Canadian travellers, this means that the testing and vaccination requirements for flying to Hawaii are now exactly in line with those of flying to the continental US.

Proof of vaccination and a negative COVID-19 antigen test will suffice, along with a Health Form to complete.

However, PCR tests are relatively expensive to obtain outside of Honolulu, and travellers may want to plan a few days in Honolulu for a free test or bring along their Switch Health self-test kits for a smoother return journey.

With travel restrictions now as loose as they have been since the start of the pandemic, I’m sure many Canadians will be making Hawaii their destination of choice during the upcoming winter and Spring Break holidays.

As always, you can refer to our Travel During COVID-19 Resource for Canadians for the most up-to-date information on travelling in the pandemic era.

Thanks Ricky! My understanding is that effective Nov 8, 2021 for Canadians flying to Hawaii, only the following two Covid-related requirements remain in place: (1) Vaccine proof (2) Negative Covid-19 test test.

My understanding is that it is no longer necessary to complete the Hawaii Safe Travels Form prior to departure nor is it necessary to upload test results to it.

This stuff is so confusing is that I’m hoping you can confirm that I’m right (or not!).

Thanks and best regards, Peter

This is correct. Direct flights from Canada do not require the Safe Travels form. I just arrived in Hawaii without any issues. Domestic flights within the Hawaiian islands also do not need it.

Make sure you keep the boarding pass from your direct flight from Canada, you may be asked for it when you check into a hotel or car rental.

This was my understanding as well. Only required to do Safe Travels if your flight from Canada is not direct, and has a stop over in the United States.

YVR-OGG on TK only costs 7.5k for Y and 15k for J, but ut does not show up on the website and you need to call in to book.

I was able to get Covid coverage through the Canadian Snowbird Association under their MediPac Travel Insurance $5,000,000.

I am Canadian. If I get a covid test and ok travel to hawaii. When returning zo Canada, where do I get the covid test required by Csnadisn immigration inorder fly back to Canada? Is tgere a specific location in Honolulu? Thanks

Air Canada has cancelled three of my rescheduled flights to Honolulu, last I heard they are not flying to Honolulu till Dec 1st. From other articles that I have read the State of Hawaii only accepts a Nasal Swab tests which can only be done 72 hours from the last leg of your flight plans to Hawaii. i.e. I am flying from Edmonton to Honolulu via Vancouver, San Francisco so my test will only be accepted if it is done 72 hours from the time my flight leaves San Francisco.

We plan to look into the availability of COVID-19 testing for travellers across Canada in a future article.

Here in BC, we cannot get the testing done for travel. Your call is screened and you must show symptoms and signs. We don’t get to have that option. Even if you lie and get the text, your results are not guaranteed in a certain time frame. This Covid text plan is not going to work for anyone in BC..

I was wondering what the travel policy was for Non-Canadians living in Canada ( For example on an open work permit, no PR yet). Would I not be allowed to travel to and from Hawaii and Toronto under this program unless I can prove I am a citizen of Canada?

Please post any information on private labs that can offer the Covid test required for Hawaii entry once you have this information. We live in Vancouver.

I am hoping a possible compromise is to allow self-quarantine until the results are available. I have the Altitue-25k status so could bring a second suitcase full of food and snacks. haha

In my case there is hope but doesn’t look good. I made my booking for buisness class for three weeks in September on the first day of the promotion. The flights can be cancel free until Aug 31 so decided to take a shot even though I expected only a 10% chance I would be able to take the trip. With the latest news, I would say still only a 25% chance the trip will happen. If they insist on the PCR test rather than the rapid test then it is unlikely. In case the test needs to be done in the US I booked a round trip to Pittsburgh three days before my flight from Toronto which I can cancel if the test can be done in Canada or the land border opens (highly unlikely). It is also unclear if someone "out-of-state" would be able to get a test at CVS which is not possible now. The other problem, other than only having 72 hours to do the test and get the result, is the time difference. The flight from Vancouver arrives at 8pm which is 2am EST. So the earliest test would be 7am EST the following mornng. This brings the time down to 65 hours at best. To get the result 2 hrs before the Toronto flight (In order to cancel) would be 10am EST, so that brings the time down to 51 hours. So in my case I would need to find an approved service able to return the result in 48hrs. Given that currently it would be very difficult to even get the result in 72 hours I am hopeful but not optimistic. Will know more once the requirements are decided in the next couple of weeks.

This sounds promising considering I just booked tickets to Hawaii at the beginning of Sept. What still worries me at this point is 1) the FDA-approved PCR test from a CLIA certified laboratory is this not an American thing? and 2) whether or not we’ll have to quarantine once we return to Canada

canada travel advisory hawaii

The Hawaiian authorities should be providing more information on the testing requirement prior to August 1, and hopefully that includes clarification about international testing standards. I’ll be sure to update this post when we know more.

Other than faking it, can you even get a test if you don’t show symptoms?

Yes, I know several Montrealers who’ve been able to get tested while asymptomatic. The 72-hour turnaround time might be trickier to guarantee, and may require a visit to a private clinic to be on the safe side.

In Ontario, anyone who wants to get a test is able to. Just look up your local testing centre, go to their website, pre-register (among other things, it will ask which day you plan to attend), show up any time during that day, no appointment required. It does take up to 4 days to get the result.

This is amazing. To be honest, the rules keep changing and it makes anyone question how they can even be confident that their tests are adequate. I can now cancel my pcr booking with lifelabs and opt for a simple rapid antigen test at Costco instead. Thank you for making things clear.

I don’t know why people would want to risk traveling outside of Canada at this point. There was an article on hospital cost for a COVID-19 patient in US. It ended up being over $1 million (he was on a ventilator). To me, the hassle of travel, quarantine and financial risk is not worth it at this point.

It’s interesting to note the variance in people’s attitudes. Many readers express views similar to yours, but then again there are other readers who’ve told me they’ll be on the first flight to Greece on July 1 🙂

Amazing news…I’m packing already. With many countries opening up and opting for a "proof of a negative COVID-19" test, before access is granted, how about an article detailing specifics on who completes these tests, where to obtain them, costs, time required before you have the necessary paperwork is in-hand etc.. Would be a shame to get all dressed and have no place to go.

I can share my testing experience, I was tested voluntarily at my local hospital’s Covid-19 testing center this past week.

Unfortunately, I don’t know how I’d coordinate testing before my trip, there’s a chance that I may land in Hawaii before my test results come back if I did the test at my local hospital with their stated turnaround times. The hospital was quoting 3-5/4-5 days for results, which was the timeframe for my results.

Thanks for sharing Andrew!

Maui Wildfire Update

In August 2023, Maui suffered a deadly fire that wiped out the town of Lahaina and prompted evacuation of tourists.

Lahaina remains closed off until further notice while recovery operations are still underway. T he post-wildfire restoration might take a decade.

Lesser affected areas of the West Maui coast reopened November 2023. The rest of Maui is open and welcoming tourists as well.

Check Maui road closure announcements here

Chair of the House Committee on Tourism said: “I know that it is a very difficult path that we are trying to navigate in bringing the tourists back to Maui to be at once respectful of this incredible grief, while also understanding that we cannot afford to add an economic disaster on top of the humanitarian one.”

Hawaii requirements to enter indoor businesses

You might be wondering: Do I need a health pass, vaccine certificate, or Covid test to enter restaurants, attractions, and other businesses in Hawaii?

Proof of vaccination or negative Covid-19 test are no longer mandated anywhere in Hawaii. Some individual businesses may still set their own requirements for entry.

What are the quarantine rules in Hawaii?

Individuals who test positive for Covid are generally asked to isolate for at least 5 days and at least 24 hours after any fever has resolved. After quarantine, masks should be worn for 5 more days.

Hawaii is no longer enforcing quarantine for travel since the entry requirements have been lifted.

Can I travel to Hawaii in June or July 2024? Can I travel to Hawaii this Summer?

Travel to Hawaii in June is open . Read on for details and check back for updates.

What is it like to fly to Hawaii right now? HNL Honolulu International Airport? It is no longer necessary for travelers to Hawaii to complete the Safe Travels procedure before flying.

Hawaii airports are generally busy and crowds may be difficult to avoid.

Check with your airline about current mask requirements.

Do I have to quarantine when traveling to Hawaii? The Hawaii quarantine requirement for travelers ended March 2022. Those who contract Covid should self-isolate.

Does Hawaii require a negative Covid 19 test for travelers? Travelers no longer need a pre-travel test for Hawaii.

For travel insurance that covers Covid, check out Nomad Insurance by Safety Wing >

What service businesses and restaurants are open in Hawaii? Businesses, retail, and attractions have reopened in Hawaii.

Restaurants, bars, gyms and social establishments no longer have mandated capacity limits. Hawaii does have staffing shortages so lines and longer waits may be experienced.

What gatherings are allowed in Hawaii? Maui, Big Island Hawaii, Oahu, and Kauai no longer have capacity limits or gathering limits.

Are face masks required in Hawaii? Hawaii’s indoor mask mandate ended as of March 2022. Masks are highly recommended indoors in areas with a High risk level.

In times of rising hospitalizations from Covid, health officials have asked the public to continue wearing masks to prevent spread beyond the islands’ hospital capacity.

Are buses running in Hawaii? Hawaii public transportation is running on regular schedules. We see some passengers wearing masks, but it’s not required.

What requirements are there for cruise ships in Hawaii? There are no special rules for cruise ship passengers arriving in Hawaii. According to the CDC, cruise ships may have their own COVID-19 requirements for testing, isolation, quarantine, mask wearing, and dining.

Do you need a passport to visit Hawaii? When flying from other U.S. States, travelers only need identification required for domestic travel . International travelers will need a passport to fly to the U.S., including Hawaii.

Will Hawaii impose new Covid restrictions? What’s next is difficult to predict. Historically, Hawaii has been one of the most proactive and “strict” States when it comes to preventive Covid measures. If strains on Hawaii’s health care system might become unsustainable, we may see renewed restrictions.

How has the Coronavirus impacted Hawaii?

Although Hawaii managed to keep their percentage of case numbers lower than most other States, resources and capacity are much more fragile on the islands .

Hawaii saw a rise in new coronavirus infections late in the summer 2020. Hawaii reopened carefully in 2021 with quarantine and testing protocols in place to reduce virus transmission from travel. In summer 2021, tourism numbers returned to normal levels, despite few international visitors.

Oahu’s reopening strategy in 2021 was originally intended to ease restrictions on Oahu once the vaccination rate reached a certain level. However, a significant surge in delta cases and hospitalizations in August and September 2021 prompted the Governor to temporarily discourage any non-essential travel.

The tiered reopening strategy was then replaced by the Safe Oahu Response Plan, which included proof of vaccination or testing to enter restaurants and businesses.

The emergency proclamation in Hawaii ended March 6, 2022. Hawaii was the last U.S. State to end their indoor mask mandate on March 26, 2022.

More than 3/4 of Hawaii residents have been vaccinated.

Economically, one in three Hawaii workers has been unemployed during the pandemic. Tourism, a major industry in Hawaii, has obviously taken a hit. The economic implications may be significant, yet health and safety remain top priorities.

For the current situation in Hawaii, including: total COVID-19 positive cases; total cases in Honolulu, Maui, Kauai, and Hawaii counties; and COVID-19 testing in Hawaii, please see the Hawaii Department of Health site .

What should you pack for safely traveling in Hawaii 2022?

😷 Face Masks – Face coverings are recommended in crowded public places. Find N95 masks at Bona Fide > or designer options at Vida >

💳 Vaccine Card Holder – Protect that paper CDC card when traveling (if your country doesn’t offer a digital version). Get a simple plastic protector > or Vegan leather clippable > or Leather passport + card combo holder >

👃 Covid self-test – The most studied rapid antigen self-test with FDA authorization. NOT valid to enter countries. Use for your own peace of mind. Order from CVS > or Walmart >

💧 Sealed water bottle – Make sure your reusable water bottle has a lid that’s not exposed to the air. We use one of each of the following: Shop insulated water bottles with protective lid > Shop water bottles with purification filter and protective lid >

✈️ Travel insurance that covers Covid – We’ve started using Nomad Insurance by Safety Wing for affordable evacuation, international medical, and trip coverage.

What do Hawaii locals and recent travelers say about visiting Hawaii now?

What is it like to visit Hawaii right now? It’s our goal to provide regular updates here from real people on the ground, to help potential visitors know what to expect. The following are subjective opinions only. Official travel guidance can be found above.

According to a survey in June 2020, a majority of Hawaii residents support Coronavirus restrictions and are willing to repeat stricter lock down measures.

January 2024 – Intentional Travelers:  “We visited family on Oahu over the holidays. Generally, Covid concerns seem lower than they were in 2023 among our Hawaii family and friends.”

September 2023 – Intentional Travelers:  “ Like everywhere in the world, the concern about COVID in Hawaii depends on who you speak with. Some of our Hawaii family members have expressed concern about rising cases and they wear masks in public areas or large family gatherings. Other family members are not concerned at all.

In most public areas like the airport, stores, shopping malls, etc. the majority of people are not wearing masks. Though everywhere you go, you do see at least a couple of people wearing them. On the airplane flying to Honolulu, of the 170+ passengers, maybe 10 or so were wearing masks.

The local news reports on rising cases, concerns etc. One recent article cited concerns that the tragic disaster in Maui will cause an uptick in cases.”

April 2023 –  Intentional Travelers: “The airport is crowded and tourist activities are back in full swing. Most of our family members in Hawaii are back to normal life, though still very wary of Covid because the health care system on the islands is fragile. Some locals still wear masks in crowds and indoors.”

February 2023 – Melodie of TravelMustDos : “We flew to Hawaii and spent 6 nights on Oahu and 4 nights on Maui. Travel is back to usual with the exception that more people are wearing masks. Hawaii has a lot of visitors from Japan and it appeared many of them wore masks in public places. Masks were also encouraged at the Airport Lounges.

We did not run into any COVID related travel restrictions. We only observed that more people than in the past (pre pandemic) were wearing masks maybe 5-10%. Masks were not required on flights or in public areas. The only email I received regarding wearing masks was for the American Airlines Lounge at HNL. And masks were not required just suggested.”

October 2022 – Karen from https://foreverkaren.com/ , Canadian tourist: “I cruised from Vancouver, Canada, to the Hawaiian Islands, and stayed in Maui for 2 days and Oahu for 3 days. Tourism in Hawaii has returned to the times before the pandemic, although some tours still recommend social distancing and do thorough cleaning after each tour.

Most excursions are operating as before and tour operators said they were very busy. A few restaurant staff wore masks, although it was not required. Restaurants were busy in both Oahu and Maui, and we often had to wait 30 mins for a table. Some attractions have gone to online bookings online and contactless payments at the venue.”

Kauai 2022 luau

September 14, 2022 – Mirna of AspiringCreativeSoul :  “My husband and I visited Kauai for 6 days in September 2022. All activities were accessible. We did not encounter closures of any kind. Masks were optional everywhere we went, except in a small bus we took to tour a Hawaiian Botanical Garden.

We encountered no crowds any where we went, except for the ticketed events that cater to large groups. We had no concerns about being able to access medical services. Food prices were higher than normal, but we did not encounter food shortages.”

June 2022 – Sophie from We Dream of Travel: “We recently visited Maui and later the Big Island. Traveling to Hawaii is simple in terms of covid at this point. However, the islands have seen a large increase in tourism recently, particularly as domestic travelers are opting to travel to Hawaii rather than international travel. On top of this, there are ongoing issues with staff and supply shortages. Due to this, accommodation is limited, tours and restaurants are often fully booked, and prices have sky rocketed. While it is absolutely worth visiting Hawaii, some advanced planning is required to ensure you have a great vacation.”

April 10, 2022 – Steven, visitor: “Honolulu very much feels like COVID is winding down. Most people are unmasked and places are busy again, but some businesses still have shortened hours in place.”

January 4, 2022 – Michelle, Intentional Travelers: “We flew to HNL on Alaska Airlines, following the same Safe Travels protocols in our previous updates.  We noticed a huge line for the free Covid testing outside of the airport arrivals area. The waits for free walk-up or drive-thru testing are reportedly several hours long. At our favorite coffeeshop with outdoor seating and when picking up to go orders, we were not asked for proof of vaccine or test. We did need to show vaccination cards for a private party at a restaurant. People are wearing masks indoors and many keep masks on outside as well. Our local family are still watching the case numbers carefully with concerns that the healthcare system could be overwhelmed again.”

September 5, 2021 – Jedd, Intentional Travelers: “I returned to Honolulu, Oahu a third time this year to help with more family needs. The flight from Portland to HNL was not very full but the return flight was packed with lots of families. The airport was a little less busy than it has been earlier in the summer but lines were still long. Most locals continue to wear masks indoors and outdoors. My Hawaii family members are very concerned about case rates and risks involved with sending kids back to school. There were rumors about a lock down due spiking hospitalizations, but in reality it sounds like a new vaccination requirement for restaurants and venues on Oahu is what’s actually going to happen.”

August 15, 2021 – E.M., Visitor: “I came to Hawaii (Oahu and the Big Island) for 6 weeks to house sit and to visit a friend, respectively. Technically travelers are allowed right now, however in talking with some locals, they are concerned about the volume of travelers and ability for Hawaii’s resources to be able to handle it. The concern is both for resources here and also for flight capacity to get off the islands if the current state of ‘openness’ changes. My visit to my friend’s house was canceled for this reason. The beaches are still open and I have enjoyed beautiful swims and sunrises. I’ve also loved hiking in the mountains. I have found that masks are mandatory inside everywhere and have seen many people wearing them outside as well. Restaurants have been asking for people to fill out forms for contact tracing. I have heard from locals that hospitals are filling up, but I have no direct anecdotal experience about hospitals, medical centers, or testing here on the islands. Local attractions, shops, and restaurants seem to be open and just requiring masks, social spacing, and contact tracing.”

August 1, 2021 – Permanent Resident, Honolulu: “Our COVID positive numbers in the last 3 days have cumulatively gone past 1,300! I am doing a double masking again in more public areas and have noticed that some of the clerks have even chosen to wear shields on top of their masks. I’m needing to prepare for a potential lockdown, we’ll know in a few days. This delta variant needs to be taken seriously. My poor niece begins school here next week with a double mask.”

July 11, 2021 – Jedd, Intentional Travelers: “ I returned to Oahu to help out with some family matters. I had no problem entering my vaccine information and uploading a picture of the card (from Kaiser Permanente) to the Hawaii Safe Travels account, just like we did with our pre-travel test on our previous trip. Departing PDX was busy and not everyone wore their masks at the ticket counter despite it being a federal requirement at airports. The flight to Honolulu on Alaska was uneventful. Tourism in Hawaii is as busy as ever. I saw the line outside the car rental place at the airport wrapped around the building – apparently there is a shortage of cars and really high demand so rental car prices have skyrocketed. Masks are still required indoors (due to State rules). In tourist areas outdoors not a lot of people are wearing masks. However, I walked to downtown the other day and lots of folks were wearing masks outdoors there. It’s a contrast between locals and tourists. Also, droughts and brush fires are happening on Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island.”

Jedd in HNL airport by sign for Hawaii pre-clearance program by Alaska Airlines

April 2021 – Aunty, Recent Visitor: “ [When arriving on Hawaiian Airlines,] print 2 copies of the pages with all uploads (QR code, Test result, photo upload). They say that smartphone copies are acceptable, but it was easier for us to show our printed copy. I say print 2 copies, one for yourself and another as a backup in suitcase or with companion. Once you depart that plane in HNL you are instructed to follow the maze which leads you to the checkpoint. This line is as long as the amount of people on your plane. For us we had over 200 people. It took about 45 minutes for us to get to our processor. He took 3 minutes with his scanner, checked our ID’s, and passed us. Then we were in for another surprise ..that there is no wiki wiki bus service to take us to baggage claim. So we had to walk another mile and a half to baggage claim which happened to be the very end of Hawaiian baggage claim terminal. So my last tip is to wear comfortable walking shoes & have water. “

March 2021 – Permanent Resident, Honolulu: “The numbers of visitors to the islands keep growing by the 20,000s+ daily. It’s disappointing to see the pictures of people on Waikiki Beach, in restaurants and in bars; so unfair of how our medical system may be affected again.”

canada travel advisory hawaii

March 2021 – Jenn at Cocktails Away , Visitor:   “I flew to Honolulu, Hawaii to work remotely for 10 days in March 2021. Locals are welcoming travelers but prefer that they be respectful of the COVID-19 restrictions that are in place to protect everyone. It’s definitely less crowded than normal but there are still a good number of people visiting the area. Even with strict testing and quarantine protocols (if you weren’t tested) in place, masks are worn at all times in public by most. Contact tracing is in effect as well. Businesses are still operating under limited capacity and hours, so as tourism rates increase, delays and availability may be impacted. Most businesses that were able to withstand the impact of the pandemic are starting to open. Hotels are hosting testing sites and you pass by them as you walk through the city. Vaccinations are still being administered to those 70+ so the rollout for that has been slower than in some states.”

February 2021 – I’m Jess Traveling , Maui resident: “Visitors are welcomed to Hawaii if everyone complies with the mask wearing rules, not gathering in large groups and stays social distanced. Businesses and residents have taken everything seriously since the beginning of the pandemic. Booking ahead for all excursions, dinner reservations and activities is highly encouraged since space is more limited. All travel restrictions are being followed by locals and visitors alike. Maui only has one hospital but since you must prove a negative test before getting on the plane, Maui has not had huge outbreaks. Most, if not all attractions and activities are opened but with limited hours and smaller capacities than before. Live music is also back in many restaurants which gives it all a sense of normalcy.”

canada travel advisory hawaii

January 2021 – Noel at This Hawaii Life , Hawaii resident: “Yes visitors are welcome to Hawaii, providing that they do a pre-Covid test and on some islands, a secondary test each county provides. Masks and social distancing requirements are in effect so that is also an important note to visiting the islands. Most attractions are open for visitors to enjoy along with dining/shopping venues to visit.”

December 2020 – Michelle J, Visitor to the Big Island: “The island of Hawaii has done a good job of managing the COVID-19 pandemic and they are cautious about making sure it stays that way and locals are kept safe and hospital resources are not overwhelmed. “

November 2020 – Bridget, Criterion Travel , Visitor to the Big Island: “A dear friend of mine decided to take a ‘workation’ and rented a condo in Kona for a few weeks.  After traveling to Hawaii, I recommend keeping your Safe Travels Hawaii account information handy and set up your application form ahead of time or the screening and processing time will be longer. I had a layover in Honolulu. This means two forms that include flight numbers etc., uploading negative test result via pdf, answering survey 24 hours prior to departure. Pro tip: Your QR code is your lifeline! There were lots of people bumbling around and they were clogged up in screening and processing because they did not cover their bases. For pre-travel testing, I went with a test kit via Vault Health. It’s the first FDA EUA authorized saliva test on the market. I preferred taking the COVID test in my home and I have a comfort level with technology. I purchased my test for $150 and created an account online. I received my test the very next day! I was careful to follow the instructions and did not open the test until I was ready to take it. I spit into a beaker while under the supervision of a doctor via zoom. I sent it off via my nearest UPS store. The results were ready in plenty of time and received updates online to put me at ease. Upon arrival, military personnel administer selective temperature checks via an infrared thermometer. You also have to scan your QR code and review your form details with an airline representative. The State is paying for an onsite COVID-19 test and it’s administered prior to being allowed to leave the airport. Yes, another one! The multilayered two test approached is really impressive to see in action. Aloha spirit is alive and well on the islands. I was inspired and impressed by the rapid testing options and the pre-travel approval program implementation by the state of Hawaii. People were masked up at the famers market, restaurants and on the trails. Another pro tip: Buy a mask that you feel comfortable in – the heat is not an excuse. I also suggest you pack sanitation wipes to use in the rental car or as needed.”

May 26, 2020 – Resident, Oahu: “Locals worked hard to flatten the curve, and with so many senior citizens in Hawaii, it is discouraging to see travelers flaunting rules and regulations to do as they please on their vacations. It has gotten to the point where a neighbor reported a visitor who was visiting her son for breaking the 14 days quarantine rule… It has become very divisive in some communities. Hawaii is a small state with limited resources. Tourists who choose to travel without regard to existing rules and regulations (which are often difficult to enforce) appear to be selfish and self-absorbed. First responders have had to rescue hikers, swimmers, etc.”

May 26, 2020 – Resident, Big Island: “I’d highly discourage travel to Hawaii from the mainland and vice versa. Currently Big Island Hospital in Hilo has limited ventilators and PPE everywhere, for every health practitioner, is very limited. If travelers come and create a second wave, which everyone is expecting when tourism restarts, we do not have enough resources available on every level. Many locals are doing their part to practice social distancing and feel that tourist should follow the rules like the 14 day quarantine. Tourism is needed to boost the economy, but I take health over money any day. Especially when my family, parents, in-laws, and relatives have medical problems. This second wave and opening up Hawai’i is getting me a little more anxious.”

Thank you for your listing . I am going to Hawwaai from Aud=stralia on 29th sept 2022 and it was a bigf help .Lorraine

Thanks, Lorraine. Safe travels!

Just want to confirm that Hawaii is now allowing unvaccinated international travellers. If so, when where the restrictions lifted?

Apologies for the confusion, Alana. I was thinking of testing rather than vaccination with your question. To clarify: Hawaii has the same rules as the rest of the United States, which no longer requires a pre-travel test but does require full vaccination for non-US citizens who are arriving internationally.

I’m surprised the article left out the 3rd option for exemption from quarantine. That’s if you’ve had a recent Covid infection. You can show proof of the positive test and a doctors note indicating you’ve recovered. I’m going that route and was approved for my travel without quarantine for my Feb. 2022 trip.

Thank you for sharing. This exemption does seem to be more common now, and we will update the post to include it.

This guide is incredibly helpful. You’ve really thought through everything you need to know before planning a trip. Thank you for this helpful resource. Saving this guide for later!

If you have received both vaccine shots do you still need to get a negative covid 19 test result prior to travel to Hawaii?

That is a good question and I think many are wondering the same thing about other destinations as well. At this time, there is no special allowance for vaccinated travelers, and we can’t predict what Hawaii might decide to require in terms of vaccines in the future. From what I’ve read, I would guess that most destinations will continue to require a Covid test regardless of the vaccine since the timeline for immunity after vaccination is still uncertain. We’ll be sure to update our post as soon as we know more.

Need to know if CPL Clinical Pathology Labs are approved for Covid testing to Hawaii?

Thanks for your question, Neil. I know there have been some questions about qualifying labs for the test. I don’t see that one on the list currently. You can find it here: https://hawaiicovid19.com/travel-partners/

Hi Michelle! This is good information for anyone who is even thinking about running away to Hawaii to sit this all out. Actually, that’s about all they CAN DO if they go, right? Just sit. And why go to Hawaii for that? But it will be interesting to see what happens in October. I think we are all just waiting until that safe and effective vaccine comes out. ~Kathy

Thanks, Kathy. Yes, right now it seems best to refrain from visiting, especially since the timeline for reopening keeps getting pushed back. Hopefully there will be a clear safe, and sustainable way to move forward soon so that Hawaii’s tourism economy can recover while keeping locals healthy.

Why bother going? I can far more easily and far less expensively sit at home, order food for delivery and watch reruns of Magnum P.I.

How to check for bed bugs: Every traveler needs to know this

Bali, Indonesia bedroom with dark lighting

In the lead-up to a big trip, you can’t wait to get away. In the days ahead, you’ll experience new people, places, and foods, letting you live life to the fullest and gain new perspectives. That could mean a trip to Nantucket , where you roam empty beaches and dine on just-caught bay scallops, all while enjoying a small-town setting.

What are bed bugs?

How to check for bed bugs when you arrive.

When you’re caught up in the moment and can’t wait to try the next thing, you probably won’t think much about the risks and hazards around you. One example is bed bugs. Barely visible yet capable of creating havoc, these minuscule creatures can turn a dream trip into a bad situation. Here’s how to check for bed bugs when you arrive and ensure they don’t join you on the trip back.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) , bed bugs are tiny pests that feed on blood and cause itchy bites on their victims. When there’s an infestation, bed bugs are everywhere. But with the right info, you can identify the threat and be on your way.

  • These are the 10 best things to do in San Diego, according to a local
  • Don’t commit a faux pas: Your guide to tipping around the world
  • This is the best time to visit Switzerland

The EPA further lists the common characteristics of bed bugs:

  • Around the size of an apple seed (5-7 mm)
  • If recently fed, they have a brown, oval-shaped body that’s long and flat
  • If not recently fed, they have a stretched, balloon-like appearance and are reddish-brown
  • They produce a “musty-sweetish” odor from their glands
  • Have “true bug” characteristics, like golden-colored hairs, four-part antenna, a three-segmented beak, and wings not used to fly

Recent increases in bed bug infestations could be due to subpar pest control, lack of understanding, more travelers, and pesticide resistance. Though bed bugs don’t spread disease, they’re a public health pest, causing allergic reactions, skin infections, and anxiety in victims.

Safe to say, you want to avoid these creatures at all costs. Here’s how.

Besides bed bugs’ physical characteristics, they leave behind telltale signs . Here’s where to look — and what to look for — when you arrive at your room.

  • First, look at your mattress and sheets. Bed bugs gather around seams, piping, and tags and leave brown or reddish stains when crushed. They also congregate on furniture seams and in between cushions.
  • Next, look for tiny dark spots, which are excrement and can seep through fabric like a magic marker. Lastly, check for eggs — about 1 mm wide — and pale yellow eggshells shed by nymphs as they increase in size.
  • If signs point to a bed bug infestation, notify the property manager and secure alternative accommodations. The nuisance and bites aren’t worth toughing out. They could ruin an otherwise wonderful trip.

Though bed bugs are increasing in the U.S., you can avoid them with the right info. Knowing what they look like and where they hide lets you check as soon as you check in and stay elsewhere if you find them. So go out and explore with the knowledge you need for a safe, healthy vacation.
