Travel vaccination clinics

Do you need vaccinations.

When you travel abroad, you may need vaccinations to protect yourself from diseases and infections which pose a threat in other parts of the world. It is therefore important to find out in good time before you travel whether you will need additional vaccinations for the country you are visiting.

Here at St Mary’s Surgery we offer a comprehensive travel health advice and immunisation service. We can assess the health risks of your travel plans and recommend the appropriate vaccinations.

As some vaccinations take time to reach effective levels of protection or may involve the completion of a carefully spaced course of doses, it is important that you allow sufficient time for this before your travel – at least three months – if possible.

travel vaccinations stevenage

Our normal travel clinic process is:

  • Patients to complete and submit a travel risk assessment form (one per person travelling) via Ask My GP
  • A telephone consultation with a travel clinic nurse to discuss your travel requirements in more detail to be arranged. This provides an opportunity to fully discuss your travel plans and for our nurses to ensure you have the right vaccine information for the places you are visiting.
  • Face to face vaccination appointment booked or vaccine course to be commenced.

Should you have a late holiday booking, having the appropriate vaccinations and advice will still give you some important protection. Please note that if your trip is less than four weeks away, the surgery will NOT be able to see you for your vaccinations. We ask that you seek advice from an external travel clinic . We can offer a printout of the vaccinations on your patient record to help with this, if you wish .

St Mary’s surgery is a registered yellow fever centre and we welcome patients from surgeries unable to provide this service. (Please note patients from other surgeries are not able to have their other vaccinations here.)

Travel vaccination fees

In addition to our travel clinic consultation, we are able to offer some routine travel vaccinations FREE of charge through the NHS.

These include:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Tetanus / diphtheria / polio-combined.

Other vaccinations are NOT covered by the NHS and are considered as private treatments that incur a cost . These include Yellow Fever and Hepatitis B. Malaria prevention treatment also requires a private prescription.

Where a course of vaccinations is required and where there is a charge, your travel nurse will advise you when and where to pay.

View our travel immunisation fees table .

Your next steps

  • First, check what vaccinations you might need for the countries you are visiting. The links below will help you.
  • Fit for Travel

You can also find more general information about travel vaccines here .

2. Complete a travel risk assessment form via Ask My GP (available 24/7) for each person travelling. Please allow at least  ten working days  for our travel clinic nurses to review your forms before they contact you to arrange your telephone consultation.

During your telephone consultation, our travel clinic nurse will assess the health risks of your travel plans and advise you what vaccinations, if any, are needed for you and your family. Please note: some vaccinations may require a course of injections, so follow-up appointments may be needed.

It might be helpful if you’ve got details of your previous travel immunisations to hand, especially if you had them at another location and they aren’t on your patient record.

3. It is important to find out about any specific restrictions or requirements for the country you are planning to visit before you book. FCO advice on country entry requirements is regularly updated. The government has also provided a  useful step-by-step planning list  for those wishing to holiday abroad.

Travel vaccination advice

If you're planning to travel outside the UK, you may need to be vaccinated against some of the serious diseases found in other parts of the world.

Vaccinations are available to protect you against infections such as yellow fever , typhoid and hepatitis A .

In the UK, the  NHS routine immunisation (vaccination) schedule protects you against a number of diseases, but does not cover all of the infectious diseases found overseas.

When should I start thinking about the vaccines I need?

If possible, see the GP or a private travel clinic at least 6 to 8 weeks before you're due to travel.

Some vaccines need to be given well in advance to allow your body to develop immunity.

And some vaccines involve a number of doses spread over several weeks or months.

You may be more at risk of some diseases, for example, if you're:

  • travelling in rural areas
  • backpacking
  • staying in hostels or camping
  • on a long trip rather than a package holiday

If you have a pre-existing health problem, this may make you more at risk of infection or complications from a travel-related illness.

Which travel vaccines do I need?

You can find out which vaccinations are necessary or recommended for the areas you'll be visiting on these websites:

  • Travel Health Pro
  • NHS Fit for Travel

Some countries require proof of vaccination (for example, for polio or yellow fever vaccination), which must be documented on an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) before you enter or when you leave a country.

Saudi Arabia requires proof of vaccination against certain types of meningitis for visitors arriving for the Hajj and Umrah pilgrimages.

Even if an ICVP is not required, it's still a good idea to take a record of the vaccinations you have had with you.

Find out more about the vaccines available for travellers abroad

Where do I get my travel vaccines?

First, phone or visit the GP practice or practice nurse to find out whether your existing UK vaccinations are up-to-date.

If you have any records of your vaccinations, let the GP know what you have had previously.

The GP or practice nurse may be able to give you general advice about travel vaccinations and travel health, such as protecting yourself from malaria.

They can give you any missing doses of your UK vaccines if you need them.

Not all travel vaccinations are available free on the NHS, even if they're recommended for travel to a certain area.

If the GP practice can give you the travel vaccines you need but they are not available on the NHS, ask for:

  • written information on what vaccines are needed
  • the cost of each dose or course
  • any other charges you may have to pay, such as for some certificates of vaccination

You can also get travel vaccines from:

  • private travel vaccination clinics
  • pharmacies offering travel healthcare services

Which travel vaccines are free?

The following travel vaccines are available free on the NHS from your GP surgery:

  • polio (given as a combined diphtheria/tetanus/polio jab )
  • hepatitis A

These vaccines are free because they protect against diseases thought to represent the greatest risk to public health if they were brought into the country.

Which travel vaccines will I have to pay for?

You'll have to pay for travel vaccinations against:

  • hepatitis B
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • tick-borne encephalitis
  • tuberculosis (TB)
  • yellow fever

Yellow fever vaccines are only available from designated centres .

The cost of travel vaccines that are not available on the NHS will vary, depending on the vaccine and number of doses you need.

It's worth considering this when budgeting for your trip.

Other things to consider

There are other things to consider when planning your travel vaccinations, including:

  • your age and health – you may be more vulnerable to infection than others; some vaccines cannot be given to people with certain medical conditions
  • working as an aid worker – you may come into contact with more diseases in a refugee camp or helping after a natural disaster
  • working in a medical setting – a doctor, nurse or another healthcare worker may require additional vaccinations
  • contact with animals – you may be more at risk of getting diseases spread by animals, such as rabies

If you're only travelling to countries in northern and central Europe, North America or Australia, you're unlikely to need any vaccinations.

But it's important to check that you're up-to-date with routine vaccinations available on the NHS.

Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Speak to a GP before having any vaccinations if:

  • you're pregnant
  • you think you might be pregnant
  • you're breastfeeding

In many cases, it's unlikely a vaccine given while you're pregnant or breastfeeding will cause problems for the baby.

But the GP will be able to give you further advice about this.

People with immune deficiencies

For some people travelling overseas, vaccination against certain diseases may not be advised.

This may be the case if:

  • you have a condition that affects your body's immune system, such as HIV or AIDS
  • you're receiving treatment that affects your immune system, such as chemotherapy
  • you have recently had a bone marrow or organ transplant

A GP can give you further advice about this.

Non-travel vaccines

As well as getting any travel vaccinations you need, it's also a good opportunity to make sure your other vaccinations are up-to-date and have booster vaccines if necessary.

Although many routine NHS vaccinations are given during childhood, you can have some of them (such as the MMR vaccine ) as an adult if you missed getting vaccinated as a child.

There are also some extra NHS vaccinations for people at higher risk of certain illnesses, such as the flu vaccine , the hepatitis B vaccine and the BCG vaccine for tuberculosis (TB) .

Your GP can advise you about any NHS vaccinations you might need.

UK Covid vaccine: Stevenage's 'super' mass vaccination hub to open next week

The new centre was one of the first mass vaccination hubs announced in December

  • 15:25, 6 JAN 2021

travel vaccinations stevenage

One of just seven "super" mass vaccination centres will open in Stevenage next week in a bid to rapidly rollout the coronavirus vaccine.

The promising news was confirmed by Hertfordshire County Council’s cabinet member of Public Health Tim Hutchings this morning (January 6), with more details now confirmed by the Prime Minister.

The site at Robertson House in Stevenage will be one of just seven in the country, and will see NHS staff and volunteers vaccinate people at a much larger scale.

Other centres include the Excel Centre in London, Epsom Downs Racecourse and Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol.

The site was first announced at the start of December, and is expected to be operational from Monday, January 11 - this is in addition to the jabs being distributed at hospitals as is currently the case.

Find out the latest vaccine information for your area below:

It comes as Cllr Hutchings praised the work being done on the rollout so far, and the plans to ramp up capacity through the month.

He said: “I think we all need to recognise that as a logistical exercise, we've never seen anything of his size - certainly not in our lifetime, it's massive.

“We were informed yesterday in the East of England there has been about 110,000 vaccinations to date. Which if you consider, I think in the whole of France they’ve only just reached 50,000, I think we're moving on at a reasonable pace, but it's absolutely clear that that pace needs to accelerate and accelerate significantly. “

“My hope, and expectation indeed, would be that once all the wrinkles have been ironed out from a logistical perspective, I would imagine that things will move very much more quickly.”

Cllr Hutchings added that the new site in Stevenage would see numbers increasing “quite significantly” once it is fully operational.

At the time of the initial announcement it was suggested that the centre would help serve north London as well as Hertfordshire, although details on who will be able to get their jab and when has not yet been announced.

Currently patients will have to wait for their GP surgery to get in touch with them before booking an appointment, and this is likely to remain in place as the most vulnerable people wait for the jab.

So far around 1.3 million people in the UK have received one dose of the vaccine, with the target of hitting 2 million doses per week later this month.

Moscow and St. Petersburg present a new tourist pass

travel vaccinations stevenage

Russia has introduced a new tourist pass called PassCity , which will be of use not only to foreign travelers who have come to Russia for a few days, but also to students from overseas and expatriates whose stay extends to a few months and more. PassCity has apps available for Android and iOS with free audio guides in English and Chinese.

PassCity has become Russia's first pass which is valid in two cities at once and covers all the major museums of Moscow and St. Petersburg. The price for a tourist pass for 3/5/7/10 days varies from $80 (1 person, 3 days - 5190 rubles ) to $230 (2 people, 10 days - 14,390 rubles ). A 90/180/360-day pass costs from $ 64 (1 person, 90 days -  3990 rubles  ) to $160  (2 people, 360 days - 9990 rubles ).  The package for several days was designed for tourists and includes an unlimited number of museum visits per day, as well as public transit. The 3/6/12-month card is meant for temporary residents of the cities and covers one museum visit a day, without access to public transit.

Apart from admission to museums, the pass gets you free coffee in the DoubleB chain of coffee shops , several trips on the airport express in Moscow, and subway rides in St. Petersburg or by taxi ordered through the Yandex.Taxi service.

For the practical and the cautious

The Voxxter team spent more than two years developing the pass; while working on it, they established partnerships with Mastercard, Yandex.Money , Yandex.Taxi (a Russian taxi service similar to Uber ), and DoubleB , a popular chain of coffee shops in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

PassCity is as easy to use as a regular credit card: It uses the Mastercard payment system, and the chosen package of services is activated upon purchase. You can deposit money on the card and use it to pay for other goods and services: Using an extra credit card instead of your primary card when traveling is a sensible security measure.

Cards are delivered through a system that has recently gained popularity among Internet banks. "You can order the pass online or through the app, and our courier will deliver it where and when you decide, for instance, your hotel, or the railway station where the airport express arrives. Our customers have confirmed that this is a lot more convenient than having to look for a sales office in an unknown city," explains Maksim Ivlev, Voxxter CEO.

Voxxter believes the pass could be useful for tourists who come to Russia to watch upcoming sporting events, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The R&K Guide To Moscow

The World Cup is upon us, but you could argue that it’s already a relic from another era, a time when Putin was looking for peaceable engagement with the West, before he annexed Crimea and unleashed his trolls on the world. But if ordinary Russians are supposed to play the part of pariah, they haven’t been told. It has been a long time since Moscow was this pleasant to visit. The city center is safe, sanitized, ready for your visit. Yes, the calm is a sign of an increasingly efficient autocracy. But we’ve known Moscow through many iterations, and for the casual visitor, this is one of the best yet. (Visit our St. Petersburg guide here.)
