Tour Edge Exotics C722 Irons Review

50 Words or Less

The Tour Edge Exotics C722 irons are fast and long, but they don’t give up anything in terms of shot shaping and stopping power.  Great, solid feel.

Introduction

Last year, Tour Edge Exotics dropped the category-busting C721 irons [review HERE ].  Call them players irons, call them distance irons, call them game improvement – either way you’re right and wrong.  For 2022, TEE had the unenviable task of trying to improve on that.  I tested the C722 irons to see if they could.

Check out the new Tour Edge Exotics C722 Ti-Utility Iron HERE

In the bag, the Tour Edge Exotics C722 irons look very similar to the C721.  The “cavity” portion has been reshaped and given a different visual texture, but the rest remains the same.  A Tour Edge Exotics logo sits in the toe just above the C722 designation.  Opposite the TEE logo is a call out to the Vibrcor technology.

tour edge players distance irons

At address, the top line of the C722 is thinner than the C721 .  There also appears to be less offset .  This pushes the C722 away from the game improvement category, at least visually.  The blade length isn’t oversized, but it’s not compact either.

Compared to its line mate, the E722 [review HERE ], the C722 irons have much thinner top lines and much less offset.

Sound & Feel

Tour Edge Exotics has put a tremendous focus on sound and feel in the last few years, and that shows in the C722 irons.  Despite being a hollow body iron, the C722 is extremely solid .  It feels like you’re delivering a gut-punch to the golf ball, knocking the wind out of it.  This strong feel is paired with a quiet “thud” – easily the quietest impact sound of any hollow iron I can think of .

TEE’s Dual VIBRCOR Technology enhances the feel without robbing the C722 of feedback.  As you move away from the center of the face, the sound gets a little louder and transitions from “thud” to “snap.”  There is also some feedback through the hands, but it’s subtle.

tour edge players distance irons

Performance

Tour Edge Exotics calls the C722 an “ultra premium player’s distance iron.”  Like so many categories, “player’s distance” is ill-defined, but I’d suggest we start using the C722 as the benchmark.  This is a true players iron in terms of launch, spin, and shot control but it also manages to be impressively long and forgiving.

tour edge players distance irons

To start my launch monitor testing, I ran the Tour Edge Exotics C722 irons against my gamer PING Blueprints [review HERE ].  This isn’t an apples-to-apples comparison by any means, but I wanted to see how much of the “players-ness” the C722 gave up in the name of distance.  The answer: none.  From the long irons through the scoring irons, the launch and spin numbers from the two sets were virtually identical .  This is particularly hard to believe given that there’s as much as a four degree difference in loft, but it’s true.

There are several reasons why it’s so important – and impressive – that TEE kept the spin in these irons.  Most obviously, spin is a big part of what keeps an approach shot on the green .  No one wants to see an iron shot land pin high, then bounce and run over the back.  Additionally, spin is what allows players to shape shots .  For an iron to carry the “players” moniker, I think that should always be an option.

tour edge players distance irons

Where the C722 and Blueprint diverged was on ball speed, and diverge they did.  Thanks to the Diamond Face VFT and Maraging Steel L-Cup Face, the C722 has ball speed on par with the fastest irons available .  In the long irons, the smash factors easily climb into the high 1.4s.  The C722 irons left the Blueprints in the dust with enhanced ball speed translating to at least an extra club of distance .

Finally, the other massive advantage of the C722 irons is consistency.  With their hollow body design and strong perimeter weighting, the C722s deliver predictable launch, spin, and speed shot after shot.  This means that whether you’re striking it like a true player or having an off day, you can rely on repeatable distances from your irons.

tour edge players distance irons

The Tour Edge Exotics C722 irons truly deliver on both sides of the “player’s distance” promise.  These irons have all the spin you need to shape your shots and stick the landing on the green.  That’s paired with tremendous ball speed and enough forgiveness to get you through some bad swings.  The C722 irons show that you can get the best of both worlds.

Great review and thanks! I am guessing these fall in the same category as P790s, Ping I525, T200s and other players distance. Pricing seems attractive relative to the other brands as does stock shaft offerings. You have tempted me!

' src=

Have not played those irons but Made in THE U. S. A. Good thing !

' src=

I believe they are built in the USA but some components are not made in the USA.

' src=

Hi Matt! I’ve been anticipating this review. Did you experience a marked difference between these and the C721’s in terms of 4i/5i launch/spin and also overall performance and feel? The C722’s sound seemed more muted per your review. Finally, how did the C722 gap wedge stack up to your current gap wedge?

' src=

I would say the difference is measurable but probably not noticeable, for most golfers. The C722 GW is a lot faster than my Edison, but I prefer the smaller head and thinner sole.

' src=

Thanks Matt. Considering new irons soon. I am impressed with the 7 wood and 3 wood I added to my bag.

' src=

On my third set of tour edge irons started with geo bazooka back in 2011 now on EXS irons, this current set is great and I don’t intend changing for a few more year yet, the only issue I have with tour edge is they change there clubs all the time I brought the EXS 3 & 5 fairway woods with turf interaction soles but the latest model doesn’t have this this to me says that development was a gimmick if it wasn’t and it was a true game changer they’d still be using it David Glod is very good at blowing the trumpet for tour edge’s latest clubs when really the previous 2 models are just as good these new irons also have what appears to be stronger lofts which also helps with distance. But I still would change them for any other major brand, I just thing if you buy them be prepared for them to be out of date within a year or possibly less lol,

I think “out of date” is the wrong way to look at it. Any change in a club comes with pluses and minuses. Rail soles are good for turf interaction, but they limit the designer’s ability to move CG. I look at it as, “In year 1, they offered a club for players who need help with turf interaction. In year 2, they offered something for players who need higher CG.” There is no perfect club which is why we always emphasize the importance of fitting.

' src=

Hi Matt The triumph of these irons seems to be incorporating the longer shafts and stronger lofts without compromising spin and playability. Have you ever hit a comparably successful “player’s distance” iron?

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of another players distance iron with this much spin.

' src=

Matt, great review and these look like trying out. One thing you don’t mention that could be important for many-price! I was at Golf Galaxy today browsing irons. The Callaways (which I love), Titleists, et. al. run about $1,300, whereas the TEE C722 & E722’s were $700 & $800, or vice versa. The price of premium irons (along with many other things) have become outrageous.

' src=

Very good review. I love my Tour Edge C721 driver and fairway woods and was awaiting the review on these irons. When I hit the lottery these irons are one of the first things on my shopping list. Thanks again for an awesome review.

' src=

Matt, How do these compare to PXG 0211 DC? Tks Guy

I have a full review of the 2021 0211 irons here: https://pluggedingolf.com/2021-pxg-0211-irons-review/

' src=

Hi Matt. I’m waffleling between the C722 and the P790 My main concern is there is not a lot of shaft choices with the tour age. Currently I have been fitted into The dynamic gold 105 stiff Of the choices that Touredge offers what would be closer to the shaft I’ve been fitted to

I would suggest contacting Tour Edge to see if you can order them with the Dynamic Gold 105, or ordering them through a builder who will make them to your spec. A new iron set is a big enough investment that, in my opinion, stock shaft choice should not be the deciding factor.

' src=

Ultimate question. Since these have just as much spin as your Blueprints, but more forgiveness and more distance: will these be replacing the Blueprints in your bag?

Or are they not as workable, and shotmaking pleases you more than controlled distance?

High praise from you in any case.

No, I’m not looking to replace my irons at this time. I discussed why I change my clubs so infrequently here: https://pluggedingolf.com/podcast-episode-136-when-to-replace-your-clubs/ To this set specifically, I’m really not looking for more distance. I wish I could get the forgiveness without the added distance, but that’s rare, maybe impossible. Part of not wanting more distance is how infrequently I play and not wanting to learn new yardages.

Matt, Being a low spin player, looking for the highest spinning and/or descent angle iron to better hold greens. Do you have any comparison as to the higher spin in clubs you have reviewed? thanks,

If you need more spin and you don’t want to be in a blade/players cavity back, this is as high spin as I can think of.

' src=

Nice review! You hit it … the key to buying any set of irons is get fitted. If you’re going to spend your hard earned money it pays to get fitted!

' src=

Just replaced my entire bag of clubs, including the bag, as mine were stolen at tournament in Cincinnati. I’m 65 a 4 index, and finally made the move to graphite. Make sure to get fitted. My bag: 722C driver and 5-gap edge 722E 3 wood 16.5 and 4 hybrid 22 degree All in Blue Ventus Reg. Flex Big change for me in shafts….. Just got em report later.

Tour edge exotics c721 irons review - a superstar in the players distance category.

Players Distance irons became a big story in the equipment industry about five years ago.  The idea being to combine the playability of cavity back irons with the looks of better players irons.  Distance, workability, control, forgiveness, and feel are all part of the equation, but sacrifices are usually made in one area for another.

tour edge players distance irons

Well, Tour Edge apparently decided to take a different approach to players distance irons, one that sacrifices nothing.  And their new Exotics C721 irons should be on everyone's shortlist as a candidate for best players distance irons of 2021.

There's a lot of technology packed in the C721 irons.  In fact, I'd call them a technological tour de force.  Dual VIBRCOR for feel, Diamond Face 2.0 for forgiveness, and military grade maraging steel for faster ball speeds to mention just a few.  You can read about this tech here .

tour edge players distance irons

Technology is always a cool backstory, but like you what I care about most is performance.  Do they perform as advertised?  And I can tell you Tour Edge overdelivers with the C721 irons.  I fact, I'd put C721 in the upper percentile for every performance category we're about to cover.

tour edge players distance irons

If you're looking at players distance irons, obviously there's no such thing as too much distance.  And the C721 are easily one of the longest irons I've hit over the past year.  And that includes more than a dozen irons in the players distance category.

tour edge players distance irons

C721 are stronger lofted irons, but they launch with rising trajectories and have plenty of backspin to hold greens even with long irons.  You feel immediately at impact these are hot face irons, but to merely call these hot or spring-like honestly doesn't do them justice.

tour edge players distance irons

At impact with C721 you get more of that strong, bullet-speed feel like when you pure a blade.  Only with C721 it's a lot easier to do, and the distance is a lot more effortless.

tour edge players distance irons

Which brings me to forgiveness, and an area where the C721 arguably might be best in class.  For a players distance iron, the C721 has the widest area of forgiveness (or call it sweet spot if you like) of any iron I've played or tested in this category.

tour edge players distance irons

Hit one out towards the toe or high on the face (and I'm talking a good full ball away from center), and the forgiveness is nothing short of exceptional.  C721 irons essentially give you abundant mishit protection by keeping dispersion and distance in particular very consistent with your good strikes.  Even shots struck low on the face still launch higher than you'd expect and give you very playable distance.  You get a large enough hitting zone to do pretty much anything you want, yet without needing to be perfect.

tour edge players distance irons

So what about feel you might be thinking?  These are hollow body irons after all, and feel is what's often sacrificed most when irons are extremely forgiving like C721.  Well, here again, Tour Edge impressed the heck out of me.  These are iron equivalents of a smooth handling car.

tour edge players distance irons

Feel is anything but hollow with the C721 irons.  At impact it's like a silky soft sensation and very solid.  Not quite as solid as a pure blade, but solid enough that you probably wouldn't guess they are hollow just by hitting them.  But that's only part of the feel story.

tour edge players distance irons

The C721 irons also have incredible feedback, and this is an area where they again stand out in the players distance iron category.  I mentioned earlier how center strikes and mishits deliver consistently similar performance in distance and direction.  But you can clearly feel when you don't hit one dead center.

tour edge players distance irons

It's a clickier vibration feel when you miss out on the extreme areas of the face.  Nothing harsh like a blade, but enough to let you know exactly where you made contact.  For a 22 handicap player maybe this doesn't mean much.  But for say a 2 handicap?  This means everything.

tour edge players distance irons

So you get the distance, you get the forgiveness, and you get the feel.  What about the shape?  This is always subjective to talk about, and I prefer to let the pictures do the talking.

tour edge players distance irons

I will say however C721 have a small enough head shape to easily work the ball.  And the sole just plows through turf and rough.  Short iron control is exceptional, and it's very easy to control trajectory and hit more boring shots when you need them.  These won't be mistaken for blades, but still have an overall very clean look.

tour edge players distance irons

Tour Edge's growing reputation as a heavyweight in equipment industry and even on professional tours is largely based on outstanding performance of their drivers, woods, and hybrids.  And the acclaim is wholly justified.

tour edge players distance irons

So I don't say this lightly when I tell you the Exotics C721 irons in my opinion are the best clubs of any kind Tour Edge has ever created.  C721 are big-time performers in the players distance iron category that will appeal to and satisfy the demands of a broad range of skills.

Great review. Already picked up the C721 driver and may consider replacing my RogueX irons

tour edge players distance irons

Thanks Jack. And can tell you, I also have the C721 driver, am thrilled with that as well. And yet somehow the C721 irons excited me even more than the driver. As I think I mentioned in my review, these are my favorite clubs of any kind I've ever played from Tour Edge. They just absolutely nailed everything about these. 👍

tour edge players distance irons

I just bought the C721 Irons A-5i. All I can say is wow. I'm and 60 year old with a 9 handicap. I've start losing distance with my Mizuno MP irons, most because of age related swing speed loss. These C721 irons have brought me back to my original distances. Solid strikes and great feel. Give the a whirl, you can't help but like them. Also, don't think you are buying a lower grade golf club. Tour Edge is right up there with the best of them at a fraction of the cost. You most likely will not hit those $1500 Pings any better.

TOUR EDGE ANNOUNCES 4 NEW IRON SETS AS PART OF THEIR EXOTICS 723 SERIES

February 7, 2023

Exotics C723 (Player’s Distance), E723 (Game Improvement), Pro 723 Forged and BL Prototype Blades to Launch March 1

Tour Edge, the pound for pound industry leader in performance and innovation, announces four new iron sets as part of the all-new Exotics 723 Series.

Today, Tour Edge announced the all-new Exotics 723 Series irons, including the more compact C723 Iron and the feel enhanced E723 Iron.

Both the Extreme (E) and Competition (C) ranges feature new technologies and setups designed to produce different playing characteristics targeting a specific player.

The performance and design goals of the Exotics 723 Irons from Tour Edge R&D are to provide every level of golfer with two extreme distance irons that feature full-face forgiveness and ball speed with a perfected sound and feel.

“Once again, we’ve made the tour-popular C723 player’s distance iron smaller than the previous iteration with a thinner top-line and shorter blade length. With the E723 iron, we expanded the sweet spot by adding more injected VIBRCOR performance TPU inside the clubhead,” said Tour Edge master club designer and President David Glod. “These are the best-looking and feeling E and C Exotics irons to date. The performance we’ve seen out of these irons has been extremely impressive to go along with these sharp new looks and impressive feel that we have created.”

Tour Edge is also launching the new Exotics Pro 723 Forged irons and the special-release Exotics BL Proto Blade irons as part of the 723 Series.

The Pro 723 Forged irons came about from the players on the PGA TOUR Champions requesting an iron featuring player-shaped forgiveness.

This led to a slightly larger forged cavity design. A VIBRCOR badge and over an hour of machining time on each iron head is the calling card of these forged beauties.

The BL Proto iron is a true prototype iron set that was designed by Glod with immense feedback from Tour Edge staff player Bernhard Langer.

Langer has played several of these prototype irons in tournament play in the 2022 season.

“The Pro 723 Forged iron is elegant and simplistic in its performance,” said Glod. “I think the first thing you’ll notice is the immaculate feel of the Pro 723 forged irons. Then you’ll see that they are some of the easiest to hit forged irons out there. That’s what the players were asking for and that is what this iron delivers. They are pretty special.”

“As far as the BL Proto irons are concerned, this is a true prototype that we are going to make available to the public through extremely select channels,” added Glod. “There are only about 100 sets, so keep a close eye to the Tour Edge feeds on how these will become available to the end-consumer through a special release.”

The new ultra-premium, high-performance Exotics 723 Series irons will be available for purchase worldwide on March 1, 2023. Pre-Sale starts February 8th and will go through February 28th.

Exotics E723 Iron

tour edge players distance irons

This ultra-premium extreme distance iron is loaded with tech, including Tour Edge’s revolutionary VIBRCOR™ technology and breakthrough Diamond Face VFT ™ technology that give these irons incredible power and feel.

VIBRCOR Technology – A high-grade TPU strategically injected into the deep 360-degree undercut pocket to create this unique speed-inducing and feel-enhancing internal technology.

The E723 Irons feature more VIBRCOR in the clubhead to further enhance feel and create more speed. It also now features visible VIBRCOR on the back of the clubhead.

VIBRCOR TPU significantly alters the feel of the clubhead, produces faster ball speed, dampens sound and shock, and creates perimeter weighting around the entire clubhead for maximum forgiveness and power off the face. VIBRCOR allows for this sleek, extremely long and forgiving iron head to have the support, sound and feel of a forged iron in an Extreme Game Improvement iron body.

Diamond Face VFT – Different diamond shapes of variable face thickness behind the face function as minitrampolines to create faster ball speeds and expand the sweet spot to outer

areas of the face. There are 99 total Diamond shapes featured on Diamond Face VFT that cover the entire face of the E723 Iron.

Diamond Face VFT features three different thicknesses in an interweaving pattern and features a face thickness reduction on the heel and toe for even greater forgiveness.

The mini trampolines that make-up Diamond Face VFT create faster ball speeds and an expanded sweet spot. The full-face increase in Diamond Face VFT coverage to the extreme heel and toe coverage ball speed on off-center hits while also greatly aiding forgiveness on these strikes.

360° Undercut Design – The design is a one-piece high-strength steel body with a 360-degree Undercut Design. What does it do? It lowers the CG to produce a higher launch and increases face flexing, ball speed and overall distance across the entire face. The multi-material electroform cap now features carbon fiber for added perimeter weighting.

Extreme Toe Weighting – Extreme Toe Weighting achieved on the high toe in the rear portion of the club along with a new toe weighting pocket. This dual toe weighting elongates the sweet spot to achieve a higher MOI and strategic CG positioning right behind center face and further optimizes the sound and feel of the iron.

Exotics C723 Iron

tour edge players distance irons

This ultra-premium player’s distance iron loaded with tech like the revolutionary VIBRCOR™ technology and Tour Edge’s breakthrough Diamond Face VFT™ technology that gives these irons incredible power and feel.

VIBRCOR Technology – A high-grade TPU injected into the hollow-body pocket to create a new speed inducing and feel-enhancing internal technology.

VIBRCOR performance gel injected into the hollow-body cavity produces faster ball speed, dampen sound and shock at impact and to create perimeter weighting around the entire clubhead for maximum forgiveness and power off the face.

VIBRCOR treatment creates the feel of a full flush cavity iron in a sleek, extremely long and forgiving iron head that has the support, sound and feel of a forged iron in a player’s distance iron body.

Diamond Face VFT – Different diamond shapes of variable face thickness behind the face function as minitrampolines to create faster ball speeds and expand the sweet spot to outer areas of the face. There are 94 total Diamond shapes featured on Diamond Face VFT that cover the entire face of the C723 iron.

Military Grade Maraging Steel L-Cup Face – A high-strength forged Military-Grade Maraging Steel Face is plasma-welded onto a 17-4 stainless steel body. This ultra-high-strength steel is used in aerospace, with applications including landing gear, helicopter undercarriages, slat tracks and rocket motor cases and other applications which require a high strength-to-weight material.

This allowed Tour Edge to produce a significantly thinner face, the thinnest in an Exotics iron to date. It also helped dramatically increase face flex across a greater surface area of the club face.

The L-Cup Face acts as a hinge designed to improve accuracy and protect off-center ball speed.

Hollow-body Design with Player Preferred Shaping – The hollow-body Exotics C723 Iron features a 5% smaller clubhead with a shorter blade length and a thinner topline. The more classic shape of the C723 features more traditional lofting from iron to iron.

This hollow-body iron design of the Exotics C723 Iron offers extreme perimeter weighting to create the distance and forgiveness of a metalwood combined with the feel and control of a forged iron set. The hollow body design allows for increased face flex, and the ability to have a thinner face and a deeper CG in a thin-sole iron design.

Available Lofts in Right-Handed – #3 iron/19, #4 iron/21°, #5 iron/23°, #6 iron/26.5°, #7 iron/30°, #8 iron/34°, #9 iron/39° PW/44°, AW/49°

Exotics Pro 723 Forged Iron

tour edge players distance irons

This slightly larger forged cavity-back iron came about via tour feedback asking for player-shaped forgiveness. The ultra-premium Pro 723 Forged irons are CNC milled to precise tolerances and the face grooves designed to maximize performance throughout the set is also CNC milled to offer the thinnest face possible without sacrificing feel.

Player Shaped Forgiveness – A slightly larger forged cavity design based on tour player feedback. The larger CNC milled cavity allowed Tour Edge engineers to move critical weight behind the center of the face and to the lower portion of the head for maximum forgiveness while maintaining a thin top line and classic look at address.

Meticulous Machining Process – Every iron head spends over an hour being CNC milled to exacting tolerances. After the forging process, the faces are CNC milled to precise tolerances and the face grooves are designed to maximize performance throughout the set. The heel and toe pockets in the cavity are also CNC milled to offer the thinnest face possible without sacrificing feel.

VIBRCOR Filled Cavity – A VIBRCOR TPU badge located inside the cavity. The VIBRCOR dampens shock and provides a buttery muscle-back feel while aiding perimeter weighting and overall forgiveness.

Center Cavity Pad – A thick pad of extra steel in the center of the cavity behind the face. The added weight in the center of the cavity allows for center hits to have greater power. It also allows the heel and toe pockets of the cavity to be precision milled as thin as possible to provide maximum forgiveness and feel on off-center contact.

Stock Shafts: TrueTemper Dynamic Gold 105 R/S/X

Available Lofts in Right-Handed – #3 iron/20°, #4 iron/22°, #5 iron/25°, #6 iron/28°, #7 iron/32°, #8 iron/36°, #9 iron/40° PW/44°, AW/48°

Exotics BL Proto Iron

tour edge players distance irons

Tour Edge chief designer David Glod worked directly with Bernhard Langer perfecting every millimeter of these milled forged blades.

The long irons feature some special tech with two tungsten plugs directly behind the face.

“After Langer first put these new prototype irons into play at the 2022 Masters, we have continued with the ageless wonder to tune them in just right,” said Glod.

“Along the way I realized that this was the perfect blade for a ton of golfers out there that don’t ever really get an opportunity to purchase. Bernhard likes a lot of offset in his blades, which is a rare thing to find. So, I decided that we will announce a special release with these prototypes to help fill a niche that exists in the marketplace. Stay tuned!”

These irons are surprising pleasant, with respect to distance, feel and ball flight. It’s easy to see older, better players graduate to this set once their skills diminish away from blades. Or up-and-comers who want to shed their thick cavity backs and get something more appropriate for their blossoming game.

Distance-oriented clubs with bells and whistles, these also deliver accuracy and solid feel for a gamut of skill levels. And at a nice price.

The wider sole and thicker top line may not visually appealing to better players.

In this Tour Edge Hot Launch C521 irons review, Scott Kramer takes a set out on the fairways for multiple rounds to put them through their paces

Tour Edge Hot Launch C521 Irons Review

The official word from Tour Edge: these are high-tech distance irons with enhanced forgiveness for competitive golfers. Going out on a short limb, we say that’s spot on.

They’re cavity backs that can achieve similar results to clubs at the top end of the market. While Tour Edge doesn’t call them players’ distance irons like other brands, that’s essentially what they are. Yet they will have a broader appeal to mid-handicaps, as well.

Tour-Edge-Hot-Launch-C521-iron-web

They’re designed to be all about maxing out distance and forgiveness. They’re made with a soft stainless steel that helps dampen impact vibration, as well.

An expanded undercut cavity moves more weight back in each clubhead. That adds forgiveness, shot trajectory, power and consistent performance. The high MOI improves shot dispersion, too, which will help shots find their target more often.

In fact, weight out at the toe elongates the sweet spot, so more of your mis-hits will feel and perform as if you hit the bullseye. Plus, a wide sole lowers the CG, which translates to cleaner, more-consistent impact with less digging into the ground.

These are traditionally shaped, with plenty of face height that gives you confidence at address. The top line is a little bit thick, but the edges are beveled and that somehow makes it look more elegant and high-end.

Our testing revealed a few things. First, impact feel is outstanding - emitting a solid and crisp thud. Second, it’s easy to see that the clubs immediately try to be forgiving on every shot - the norm is clearly a beautifully straight ball flight, with just a little bit of draw at the end.

Speaking of, there’s a slightly noticeable offset that should appeal to most players. Finally, Tour Edge made this set with stronger lofts. So getting distance is not an issue. It’s available as a seven-piece set.

Distance + 1

Players 2023: The Bomb and Gouge era is over. We've entered golf's '+1' era

1307091359

Mike Ehrmann

There was a time in golf when speed, and distance, was treated as a highly flammable concept among tour professionals. It was to be used carefully, and cautiously. The goal was to find just as much as you needed, and never more. Too much meant uncontrollable spin, which would send the ball away wildly. A fiery inferno you'd struggle to tame. It was only when Tiger Woods arrived that things began to change.

It's easy to spot the new world order in the late 1990s/early 2000s when a young Tiger was hitting wedges into Augusta National's par 5s, and winning majors by, at times, uncompetitive margins. Those who survived best—Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els—were unsurprisingly the ones who also chased a distance advantage. And as courses became longer, so did future generations.

The term "Bomb and Gouge" first appeared in Golf Digest in the summer of 2006.

"There's a new way to play, and it's all about power," the article read, emblazoned with images of the heavy hitters of the day, including future two-time Masters champion Bubba Watson.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2022/gouge.jpg

"The thinking goes, bomb driver as far as you can and, if need be, gouge the ball out of the rough and onto the green. Golf's long-held ideal—fairways and greens—is giving way to this aggressive new style. Even from the rough, these power hitters say they can take advantage of shorter approach shots and create more birdie opportunities."

Bomb and Gouge was, in essence, the lessons of Tiger taken to the extreme. Power was the singular skill that would separate a professional golfer from their peers. More is better, less is worse, and everything else is incidental. The notion was a simple and terrifying one to golf's traditionalists, who feared golf would soon recede into a game of one dimension.

More From Golf Digest

tour edge players distance irons

In the ensuing years, the Bomb and Gouge approach became more commonplace, for sure, albeit more slowly than predicted and not categorically—which explains what's happened in the last two to three years and why there's a new era underway in men's pro golf. No players could replicate Tiger's dominance. The long hitters got longer, but they came and went. The argument lacked its definitive proof point.

Potentially, Bryson DeChambeau lifting the U.S. Open trophy in 2020 was that conclusive piece of evidence. Months earlier, DeChambeau had declared he would gain as much muscle as he could. He underwent an intensive, often two-a-day process of speed-training and re-tooled his move for maximum power. Gone was the ultra-mechanical move of a player with no major top-10s to his name. DeChambeau had looked at the data, he said, and the data told him more distance. Bryson would become Bomb and Gouge, incarnate.

1273769469

Gregory Shamus

"I said to myself, OK, wait until he gets to a proper golf course, he'll have to rein it back in.' This is as proper as they come, and look what's happened," a defeated Rory McIlroy told the media in the moments DeChambeau was closing out his victory. "He's taken advantage of where the game is at the minute. Whether that's good or bad, it's just the way it is."

A new era had arrived, yet, more than two years later, as we head into the 2023 Players Championship on a course at TPC Sawgrass where distance and power would certainly seem to be valuable assets to have in your bag, the landscape is not exactly what we thought it would be. DeChambeau’s win spawned new thinking, but not a revolution. The best players in golf are not synonymous with the longest players in golf playing caveman golf. There is something more that’s needed to be elite.

What's your +1 skill?

Of the current players in the top 20 in the world, only three sit within the top 10 of driving distance on tour. Almost as many players of those sit outside the top 70 in driving distance (five) as sit inside the top 20 (six). The average Driving Distance rank for these players is 42nd, and only four of the top 20 in driving distance on tour last season a tournament.

That's not to say distance isn’t important, but rather, that distance isn't the dominant singular strategy the Bomb and Gouge moniker made us fear.

Instead, the need for distance works more like a threshold that players need to cross. The game's current best players need enough distance, with just enough control to land inside the top third on tour in SG: Driving. That's the new baseline. Once you have that, you have the platform to use your one extra, higher-echelon skill.

And that’s what separates the best from the rest.

tour edge players distance irons

Golf's new +1 era is perhaps best evidenced by a slate of its recent major winners …

Scottie Scheffler + Greens in Regulation

Scheffler ranked 19th in Driving Distance last season—an uptick from 36th the year before—and 37th in SG: Driving. It's being long enough off the tee allows him to take advantage of his elite iron play, the true strength of his game: The defending Masters champ led the tour in Greens in Regulation last season.

Justin Thomas + Wedges

JT ranked 41st and 52nd in distance and SG: Off The Tee respectively, but similar to Scheffler, he's got enough horsepower in his swing to amp-up the amount of curve in his approach shots. He uses his shot-making ability to access more pins with his short irons and wedges, where he ranks first in proximity between 50 and 125 yards.

Matt Fitzpatrick + Scrambling

Fitzpatrick perhaps embodies the +1 era best. He made adding distance a priority between 2021 and 2022, and jumped from 127th on tour to 70th on tour in Driving Distance because of it. That distance boost was just enough that when combined with his already rock-solid consistency, gave him the platform to take advantage of his true strength: his short game. He led the tour in scrambling, and won the U.S. Open along the way.

Cameron Smith + Putting

Smith is the defending champion at the Players, but he’ll be missing this week after jumping to the LIV Golf League last summer. En route to his victory a year ago at TPC Sawgrass, as well as his win a few months later at the Open Championship, he became another stellar example of golf’s “+1” approach. The short-and-crooked driver has come slightly less short over the years. That lifted his iron game, which in turn created more birdie opportunities for his generationally good putting: Smith led the tour in Putting Average last season and in Birdie or Better conversion percentage.

Jon Rahm + Depth

Rahm hits the ball far, but the true power of his game isn't his driving distance. He's one of the most well-rounded overall ball-strikers we've seen in recent years. The year of his U.S. Open victory, Rahm finished first in Total Driving (a 50-50 average between distance and accuracy rankings) and second in Greens in Regulation.

Collin Morikawa + Accuracy

Morikawa is the shortest of the bunch, but he’s also a two-time major winner. He’s proved once again, that he has just enough distance to take advantage of his elite iron play. The year of his Open Championship victory at Royal St. George’s, he led the tour in approaches from, 125 to 150 yards, 150 to 175 yards, and from 175 to 200 yards.

It's hardly confirmation of the drive-for-show cliche. You simply can't succeed at the highest level without a certain amount of distance. But golf requires more than that. It always has, and it always will. Launching drives into the distance may grab our attention, but it doesn't rob the game of the kind of complexity we all crave.

How A Fitting For A New Set Of PING Irons Could Revolutionize Your Game

P ING already had one of the most comprehensive iron ranges of all the major manufacturers, but over the last year it has extended its offering thanks to the addition of of both the Blueprint T and Blueprint S models as well as the beautifully-crafted i530 and ultra-forgiving G730 iron. The variety in clubhead design and resulting performance is why PING remains a firm favorite among golfers of all skill levels and it is the versatility of its iron range that ensures it truly has an iron for everyone.

WATCH: Golf Monthly's Sam De'Ath and Nick Bonfield visit the PING European Fitting Center for a custom fitting

Ping Iron Line Up

Lower-handicappers will be in awe of the beauty and simplicity of the Blueprint T and S models. The Blueprint T is crisp and sharp, boasting modern features in an otherwise classic-looking blade. The compact profile frames the ball superbly well and the head’s design allows confident ball-strikers to work the ball with ease. There’s exceptional feel through impact, too, thanks to the forged construction from a single piece of 8620 carbon steel.

"The bladed Blueprint T irons look superb and my dispersion pattern improved significantly" Sam De'Ath

The natural transition from the Blueprint T is into the Blueprint S model . This iron is forged from the same steel as the Blueprint T, but its clean cavity design just offers a touch more forgiveness for those craving a tour-inspired head with a hint more help on off-centre strikes. The precision pocket forging allows weight to be saved and redistributed in the longer irons for even more forgiveness.

The i230 and i530 are the perfect models for those wanting a slightly larger head than in the Blueprint range, without sacrificing feel and consistency. The i230 is tour-proven and allows for precise control and feel through an activated elastomer insert, which helps lower the weight in the head for more distance. A more rounded leading edge allows for smoother turf interaction and cleaner strikes from all kinds of lies.

The i530 will appeal to any golfer who wants a clean look at address and in the bag, while still seeking the forgiveness and performance of a hollow-bodied iron head. Its highly flexible maraging steel C300 forged face allows more distance and launch for golfers who aren’t quite such consistent ball-strikers, or who have slightly slower swing speeds. This additional height and power results in more stopping power when the ball lands on the green.

If you’re looking for some of the most forgiving irons, the G430 and G730 will be for you. The G430 is designed to sky-rocket confidence via a lower CG for an easy, high-launching flight, with its thin face promoting fast ball speeds. PurFlex technology provides seven flex zones behind the face for maximum ball speed wherever you make contact, and an extra 1° of bounce throughout the set improves turf interaction. The G430 HL model then has lighter toe and tip weights and a lighter shaft for more swing speed and greater consistency.

The PING G730 is designed for the golfer wanting maximum distance and forgiveness. It is the next step on from the G430 and perfect for those with slower swing speeds who want more distance, as well as those new to the game who will benefit from its larger head and greater offset. It boasts the same PurFlex technology as the G430, with the hyper 17-4 stainless steel thin face delivering exceptional ball speeds for those wanting the absolute most out of their irons.

The Custom Fitting Experience

In a bid to fully understand the latest technology in the iron range, Golf Monthly’s Sam De’Ath and Nick Bonfield traveled up to the PING European Fitting Center at Thonock Park in Lincolnshire, where they would both undergo a full custom fitting with some of the brand's expert fitting technicians. Nick had never experienced a custom fitting before and Sam hadn’t had an iron fitting for five years. Both were keen to see what performance gains they might enjoy with a new set of PING irons and which model, or models, in the range they would be fitted into.

After being greeted by the friendly PING fitting team, both Sam and Nick began their fitting process. Wrist-to-floor measurements were taken alongside each player's height in order to work out respective lie and length combinations and then both players began clipping balls away with their current irons in order for the fitters to gain an understanding of each player's ball and club data.

"I was blown away by the detail of the fitting, yet it also seemed so simple at the same time" Sam De'Ath

Sam De'Ath: +3 Handicap

Despite being a +3 golfer, Sam hadn’t had an iron fitting for over five years and was keen to understand how new technology may help him become more consistent with his iron game.

“I was blown away by the detail, yet simplicity, of the fitting. After swiping a few, my fitter, Adam, knew straight away which model was going to suit me and presented me with the Blueprint T iron. These bladed heads looked superb, although I feared I would struggle with my strike in the longer irons. We had a play around with the Blueprint S, another excellent-looking forged iron, but because the ball flight was similar and we were splitting hairs between the two when it came to distance, I stuck with the Blueprint T as I preferred its looks and feel” said Sam.

After looking at the data comparing his current irons to the newly fitted Blueprint T irons Sam was clearly delighted with the numbers on the screen, adding: “Thanks to the power spec lowering the launch and spin, I was able to produce a couple more yards of carry than with my current clubs, with a total around the 171-yard mark with a 7-iron. My new combination has drastically reduced the dispersion pattern I was producing with my own irons, both from front to back and left to right.”

Nick Bonfield: 10 Handicap

Meanwhile Nick, a 10 handicap had never had an iron fitting as was currently still playing a set of Nike Vapor irons that were originally released in 2014. With the much more advanced technology on hand in some of PING’s latest irons, Nick found himself in shock with some of the gains he experienced as he went through the fitting process.

“I started off in the G430, and even though I’d always considered myself an average ball-striker, Paul, my fitter, felt he had seen enough there for me to also try the i530. My numbers with the G430 were very good, but I instantly fell in love with the looks of the i530 irons,” explained Nick.

Nick had come into the fitting looking for a touch more distance than what he was currently getting and it’s safe to say he was impressed with what the i530 irons delivered. “The performance was there to match, too. My front-to-back dispersion was far more consistent than usual and I was carrying the ball an average of 175 yards – some 20 yards longer than with my Nike 7-iron,” said Nick.

It’s fair to say both golfers were immensely impressed with the full iron range that is on offer from PING this year and couldn’t believe the improvements both the Blueprint T and i530, respectably, will make to each of their games after having a fitting.

If you’re in the market for a new set of irons this season, The whole PING iron range is seriously worth considering and even more so, going through a fitting with the experts at the PING European Fitting Center is a fantastic experience where you'll leave with full confidence in your new clubs.
