The SCARPA Kailash Trek GTX is Scarpa’s latest hiking boot is both durable and lightweight. Tim’s been strapped in for a few months of hiking – here’s how they went!
Hiking boots are just about the most important bit of gear you can invest in before hitting the trail. But as with anything this crucial, the amount of options out there is pretty mind-bending.
You’re looking to balance grip, stability, support, cushioning, durability, and maybe even style, into the perfect product. You need the perfect shoe.
I was going to make a joke about choosing a brand whose name literally means ‘shoe’ in Italian. But I ended up finding this fun fact: SCARPA stands for Società Calzaturiera Asolana Riunita Pedemontana Anonima. This translates to Associated Shoe Manufacturing Company of the Asolo Mountain Area.
It still does mean shoe in Italian (and they’re made there too – so you can still make shit jokes about your Italian leather boots) but I thought that fun fact was worth sharing.
Back to the boots.
I took the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX boots on day hikes, multi-day treks featuring mountains and dunes, through soft snow, steep mountain climbs, and across slippery rock platforms. To sum them up, they were bloody excellent. Here’s why.

Comfort & Fit
Wearing boots in before a big hike is normally a satisfying experience rich with obvious comfort gains. With the Kailash Trek GTXs however, I was pretty well done in 10 minutes.
The 1.8mm thick calf leather that makes up the majority of the boot was supple (and aggressively non-vegan) from the get-go. The inbuilt flex point meant the boot bent where it was supposed to and the sole allowed my toes to flex naturally.
It did get a bit easier to tighten the boots up after a bit of wear, which was useful for my particularly narrow feet (the Kailash Trek GTXs use Scarpa’s wide-fitting BX last).
Speaking of tightness, the lacing system on these boots is excellent. The flexible eyelets go down very close to the toes and the tongue allows heaps of room for expansion if your foot has a high bridge.
My foot always felt secure with just enough give to keep movement and circulation natural. There’s enough room in the toe box that your toes never bunch up. I couldn’t touch the end even on steep descents (for reference: I was using the same size boot as my regular shoe size).
The best feature, by far, was the lace hooks. The lowest of the 3 hooks had a pinch point which securely grabs the lace, allowing you to easily keep the lower part of the laces loose and the ankle tight, or vice versa.
With my narrow feet, not losing tightness around the front of the foot is super important and this feature meant that I never had to re-tighten my laces.
After a few months of sand, mud, snow, and gravel my Scarpas are still looking pretty good. There’s a dusting of dirt on the grey leather but importantly, no visible damage.
What’s really impressive is the rubber on both the sole and the toe rand. I know that I’ve punted rocks like an Aussie Rules champ on heat, but you wouldn’t know it from looking at the front of the boot. The rand is pretty big for this kind of boot (and bigger than on previous models) and paired with a firm TPU toe cap it feels positively bombproof.
The Vibram sole isn’t particularly thick, but with only a suggestion of wear after many days of hiking, I expect the compound to have a decent innings.
Performance
The Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX nails all the basics you’d expect it to. Stability and ankle support abound. But true performance is about the multi-day treks and it’s much harder to nail. Here’s how Scarpa have tackled the problems most hikers experience.
Waterproofing
Waterproof claims in shoes can be contentious . Luckily, if you see that little Gore-Tex tab you’re probably in luck. I dunked the Kailash Trek GTXs in rivers and walked in the pouring rain with rain pants on and felt nary a drop.
Well, until a rogue wave filled the boots with water whilst I was walking along the foreshore. Lesson learned.
I didn’t walk in any particularly hot conditions. However, I reckon the combo of Gore-tex and relatively thin leather will be a winner in the Aussie summer.
Polyurethane Midsole
Probably the techiest part of the shoe, the midsole is the bit between the inner sole (that your foot stands on) and the rubber that hits the ground. Scarpa is touting their Low Density Polyurethane midsole, which gives the boot rigidity whilst still coming in at a relatively low 625g. There’s also an EVA foam insert for shock absorption in the heel.
Don’t expect them to feel like Nikes. The boots feel firm underfoot. That’s great if that’s what you’re after (like me) but if you have softer tastes a softer inner-sole or another boot might be the go.
I don’t think I slipped over once in these bad boys. I tripped over a bunch because I’m a clumsy bastard but even on slippery-rock platforms the Vibram sole was super sticky. Pretty impressive considering how little wear they showed after multiple days on the trail.
The grip pattern isn’t groundbreaking – it’s unobtrusive and functional, but I liked the hard edges for digging into unstable surfaces, and the large flat, almost approach shoe-inspired toe section for rock scrambling.
The Kailash’s look pretty vanilla. Maybe that’s a good thing? I’d say that they almost look low-key enough to get away with in more formal situations, but my girlfriend would disagree and she’d probably be right. They’re pretty hikey but the look isn’t going out of fashion – which is good, ‘cause they’re probably going to last a while.
Ah, there had to be a con didn’t there? As you can expect with a hiking boot that’s been killing it up until now, the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX will stomp a sizeable hole in your bank account.
That being said, the boots have shown every indication of being incredibly durable, a trait that Scarpa is well-known for. If you divide that $400 by the number of years use you’ll probably get out of them, it’s probably worth the 4 cheaper pairs you’d have bought in their place.
The Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX attempts to blend the comfort and maneuvrability of a modern lightweight hiker with the durability and support of a more traditional leather boot – and it bloody well nails it. Get your boots fitted in-store (it’s not worth getting wrong) and you’ll be set for the long run.
Tim was provided with the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX boots for review purposes and got to keep them afterward. The views are entirely his own.

The boot is true to size, light weight, waterproof. Trekked in warm climate but feet never got sweaty. However, the boot is good for narrow feet. Did get a blister after walking 20 km ....

Stable Hiker
These are my first Scarpa?s and I?m thoroughly impressed. I needed something to stabilize my weak ankles but found many would bother my achilles. These don?t. They?ve got great traction for dry, wet or cold weather. Good for hiking or just walking around mountain towns. They?ve kept my feat toasty and dry in low temps. The extra protection around the toe isn?t too much and leaves them looking aesthetically pleasing! I?m between 6.5 and 7 with high arches and the 37.5 fit great.

Gear Closet: Scarpa ZG Trek GTX Hiking Boots Review
When it comes to hiking and backpacking we happen to be living in a golden age of footwear. Gone are the days of searching high and low for the appropriate boot or shoe to accompany us on our adventures.
Instead, we now tend to be overwhelmed with options, ranging from low-priced, lightweight hikers that are great for day hikes on our local trails to more rugged and durable boots built for trekking through some of the most rugged and remote landscapes on the planet.
Deciding which of those options best meets our needs can be difficult, after all, many of us just need something that falls somewhere in the middle ground. Fortunately for us, Scarpa makes the ZG Trek GTX , a boot that offers plenty of comfort and stability, as a price point that will keep our wallets happy too.
Before I get too far into the weeds with what makes the ZG Trek GTX standout from the crowd, it is always a good idea to point out buying any type of shoe –– be it a hiker, a runner, a cross-trainer, or a pair of dress shoes –– is a very personal affair.
What feels good on my feet may not work for you, which is why it is important to try on a pair of boots or shoes before you buy. All of that said, I think Scarpa’s boot is an excellent utility player that will not only meet, but exceed most people’s needs, whether that’s hiking local trails, heading to the AT , or trekking to Everest Base Camp .
Classic Good Looks Impress
Straight out of the box, the Scarpa ZG Trek GTX impresses with its classic good looks. This is enhanced by the boot’s suede leather upper, which offers an attractive, understated design. At a time when some outdoor companies are embracing retro styling and 80s throwback colors, I was happy to see that the ZG Trek was more reserved in its approach.
The boot itself features a unique, but subtle, pattern in its leather that looks really nice, it just doesn’t happen to be overly flash, which is totally alright with me. This allows the boot to look like something that could have been made at just about anytime in the past 20 years, providing timeless good looks that will stay relevant in the years ahead too.
Plenty of Modern Technology
But don’t let those looks completely fool you. Underneath the hood, the ZG Trek is sporting plenty of modern technology. For instance, it is infused with a Gore-Tex membrane that keeps it waterproof while still maintaining a high degree of breathability.
That means your foot stays comfortable and dry while out on the trail, even if you have to make stream crossing or splash through rain and mud.
That performance extends to keeping your foot dry from perspiration too, as the membrane allows heat and moisture to escape from the interior. This helps to prevent blisters and hot spots, which are the bane of every hiker’s existence.
Partnership with Vibram
Underneath, Scarpa has worked in conjunction with Vibram to develop its own outsole. Dubbed the Salix Trek, this sole is built specifically for use with the ZG line of boots, providing excellent traction and mobility, without adding excess weight and bulk.
In my testing, that sole proved to be extremely competent on a wide variety of terrains, including hiking in alpine environments. I’ve worn this boot over mud, dirt, rock, thick grasses, and a variety of other types of rugged ground and came away quite impressed.
In fact, the biggest compliment I can give the boot is that I forgot that I was even testing them. That means they simply performed up to m expectations with ease, not drawing undue attention to any glaring performance deficiencies along the way.
Breaking Them In
One of the first questions I usually get when it comes to recommending hiking shoes and boots is, “how long does it take to break them in?” For the ZG Trek, the answer is “not very long at all.”
Other than the fact that the boots were a little stiff out of the box –– which is to be expected with any new shoe –– there was minimal break-in time required. After an hour or so of hiking in these boots, they started to loosen up nicely, and once again I soon forgot that they were new boots at all.
Instead, they felt like a comfortable pair of shoes that I’d owned for years. As always, before embarking on a major hike, you should wear your chosen footwear around a bit to make sure they’re ready to go.
In this case, the suede leather was supple and pliable enough straight out of the box that I wouldn’t hesitate to use them on a significant trek after just a short hike or two to break them in.
Great Build Quality with Ample Support
Built for use in fast hiking and rugged, off-trail alpine locations, the ZG Trek features good ankle support without being overly aggressive. That support extends over the ankle and up the leg to a degree, but not so much that it feels like it’s impeding your natural stride in any way.
This helps to make this boot a great choice for those who are taking on serious hikes, but it may be overkill for someone who just wants to take short walks down easy trails without much in the way of challenging terrain.
That extra stability does come in handy when carrying a heavy pack though, which should help the ZG Trek become a popular model with the backpacking crowd.
Tipping the scales at 2 pounds, 12 ounces (1.2 kg) these aren’t the lightest boots on the trail. Then again, considering what they are designed to do, you most likely don’t want something overly light anyway.
Weight-weenies will want to stick to trail runners and minimalist boots, but the rest of us will appreciate the rugged polyurethane underpinnings that will not only keep our feet well protected from rocks and other items but will ensure that this boot continues to be comfortable to wear for years to come.
Tons of Performance for the Money
The Scarpa ZG Trek GTX hits the sweet spot in terms of affordability, performance, and design.
Yes, there are lighter and less expensive hiking shoes on the market, and many of them are perfectly fine for the day hiker who is just looking for a nice, gentle walk in nature. But for those who are a bit more adventurous and are looking to take things beyond the trail, this is a boot that will provide outstanding performance and long-term durability, at a good price.
Beyond that, however, this is a boot that will also provide confidence and support to see you through adventures that can take you to some far-flung places. Whether that is thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail or to the summit of Kilimanjaro is totally up to you. Just rest assured, the ZG Trek GTX is up for the adventure as long as you are too.

Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX Hiking Boot Review
by Bennett Colvin
Active Gear Review is supported by its audience. If you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission.
Long hikes? No problem with the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX Hiking Boot. Constructed as an all purpose hiking boot, the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX was built to do it all. Founded in 1938, in the Dolomite Mountains of Italy, Scarpa has a rich history of making quality handcrafted footwear. Today, Scarpa is well known as a leader in the hiking boot arena . This summer I have been spending my days on the trail in the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX. Living in Steamboat Springs, Colorado allows for hiking daily and the constant search for the perfect hiking boot.
Initial Thoughts on the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX Hiking Boot
Right out of the box, the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX Hiking Boot appear to be a solid, well constructed lightweight hiking boot with much promise. The exterior of the boot is made from brushed leather lower portion and synthetic mesh upper. The Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX Hiking Boot comes in a single snazzy color of shark grey combined with lake blue. Both the toe and the heel of the boot are reinforced with hardened rubber.
Tread on the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX consists of deep grooves capable of ascending gnarly terrain.
The lacing system of the of the Scarpa Kailash GTX Hiking Boot is a fairly traditional speed lacing system. All of the eyelets are made from metal and look to handle some hiking abuse.
The inside of the boot is constructed with a GORE-TEX lining. The insole is a Comfort Flex Plus. This insole is made from 5mm thick polypropylene and fiberglass support with a soft felt upper.
Testing Criteria of the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX Hiking Boot
To date I have logged around 100 miles in the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX Hiking Boot. My hikes have consisted of up to 10 miles and numerous hikes in the 4-8 mile mile range. I have also tested the boots in hiking conditions such as underload, wet, dry, hot, cold, on trail as well as off trail.
Comfort of the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX Hiking Boot
I was quite pleased at the comfort of the Scarpa Kailash Hiking Boot. As in all footwear, fit is they key component of comfort. I have fairly wide flat feet that take on serious abuse when the fit is not perfect. I wear shoe size 10.5 Men’s and the size 44 is a great fit. This boot is comfortably snug around my foot with ample space in the toe area. When I walk, including on steep inclines, I do not experience any slip in the boot. The Comfort Flex Plus footbed is very comfortable and very stable. If my flat wide feet are experiencing comfort I am sure most anyone else would be having a smooth ride as well.
This solid fit Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX Hiking Boot allows for all day comfort. These boots are perfect for the long hikes. My longest hike was on a hot day on a rocky trail. Along with an excellent fit was the breathability of the boot. Never did my feet get sweaty or uncomfortable on this hike or on any of the other hikes for that matter. Adding to the all day comfort is how lightweight these boots are. Weighing around 1.5 lbs per boot these boots are fairly light considering the amount of support they provide.
Having a heavy pack on did not change the performance of the Scarpa Kailash. These days, much of my hiking consists of strapping my two year old son to my back and exploring the backcountry. Fully loaded with toddler and the supplies that come with a small child my pack weighs around 40lbs. With the heavy and often times awkward pack the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX Hiking Boot provided excellent performance as well as comfort. These mid height boots provided more than adequate ankle support, and I would feel comfortable carrying a much heavier load.
I am a big fan of the deep lugs on the Vibram Soles of the Kailash Hiking Boot. These have provided solid traction in rocky, slick, muddy, and snowy conditions. Recent scouting trips for the upcoming elk season have been some gnarly terrain and these boots have been awesome. Very few slips even on steep loose rocks. On hard-packed smooth trails these lugs may be bit of overkill but once off trail this feature is quite nice.
GORE-TEX is awesome. Between the GORE-TEX lining and the leather outside the Scarpa Kailash have been waterproof. Puddles and snowbanks have not soaked through. Additionally, I had these boots submerged half way up the boot when wading to a good area to cast my fly rod. I am thoroughly impressed with the ability of it to keep water out and at the same time allow my foot to breathe.

Hi just wanted to let you know that I bought a pair of scarpa boots and I am very disappointed after wearing them maybe 5 to 6 times one of the heels is peeling off……they’re practically brand new….I was horrified because they’re suppose to be of good quality unfortunately I don’t think o have recourse as I bought them a few years ago and stored them away until I started using them recently and don’t have a receipt but I will be steering away from them just thought you should know as feedback….has anyone else had the same problem?
Dang sorry to hear about this. Maybe get in touch with Scarpa and see what they say? My Scarpa Kailash boots are still going strong four years later and are one of my favorite boots. Thanks for the feedback.
@Michael D’agostino The same thing happened to me when I bought new boots from a guy who didn’t use them. After 20km, the soles started to come apart.
Some of these modern boots have a PU layer which degrades over time causing the soles to detach. The manufacturers use the PU layer to provide comfort. I have had this happen with my last two pairs of boots. In each case the boots lasted around seven years and then the soles began to come off – the boots signaling the impending calamity with noticeable squeaking as I was walking. Both pairs of boots were well known Italian brands. Because the uppers were still in good condition and the boots very comfortable, I took them to a local boot maker in the hope of a repair. On both occasions he was unwilling to repair them as his experience was that once the PU layer degrades a lasting repair is not possible. It seems that longevity and comfort do not go hand in hand with these boots.

Scarpa Rush TRK GTX Walking Boots Review: For hard-charging, demanding hikers
We were super excited to receive Scarpa’s new Rush TRK boots, they fit into our bias of what walking should be, nimble and unencumbered by heavy kit.
Scarpa’s Rush TRK GTX walking boots are built to withstand regular walks on rugged terrain but they don’t fall into the trap of other cumbersome clogs. This is because Scarpa use premium materials and years of footwear-making know-how in order to craft lightweight walking boots that offer stability, support and an overall lightweight and nimble feel.
With the focus of the whole Rush range being mountain performance, the Scarpa Rush TRK GTX boots are set to appeal to demanding hikers with enough passion for the pursuit to turn a blind eye to premium pricing.
Scarpa Rush TRK GTX Review: TL/DR Verdict Summary
Competing with the likes of the Salomon X Ultra 4, the Salewa Mountain Trainer 2 Mid , and La Sportiva’s TX4 Mid, the Scarpa Rush TRK GTX boots offer stability, all-day comfort, and an impressively lightweight feel. This makes for a versatile pair of walking boots, adept at tackling rugged terrain but also comfortable on gentler walks.
Although these boots are ostensibly summer-focused they can also be put to use in the winter months thanks to premium leather and a waterproof Gore-Tex liner.
Scarpa Rush TRK GTX Review: Durability and Long-term Reliability
Scarpa are known for excellent build quality and this shines through in the Rush TRK boots. The upper is 1.6mm - 1.8mm leather and a large toe bumper protects the toe area from scrapes. Everything is exquisitely crafted, from the stitching to the lacing eyelets, and despite looking sporty and feeling lightweight, the Scarpa Rush TRK GTX boots have a bombproof feel, giving you the confidence you need on tough ascents and long treks.
This reliability is bolstered by an Extended Comfort Gore-Tex lining, a waterproof but highly breathable Gore-Tex for use on sweaty summer walks, and a durable but high-grip Presa sole.
If you put the miles in and manage to wear out the soles, the Rush TRK boots can be re-soled, which is most welcome in today's single-use throwaway culture. The uppers are excellent quality, so we feel that the Rush TRK could be re-soled a couple of times before finally giving up the ghost.
Scarpa Rush TRK GTX Review: Performance and Comfort Outdoors
Although it may be a surprise to find out how stiff these boots feel they soon break in to reveal a compliant upper that moulds to the foot, still supports across critical areas like the ankle, and conforms where needed like in the flex zone between the forefoot and ankle. This kind of foot shaping and hold only comes from experienced, premium walking boot manufacturers and usually at a price, but we rarely feel it isn’t worth the investment.
Internally, the Scarpa Rush TRK GTX cushions and supports, with a wonderfully supple piece of memory foam cradling the ankle. This not only increases comfort but also holds the heel firmly in place, which helps reduce the risk of developing blisters over the course of a long walk.
Fit-wise, Scarpa haven’t strayed too far from their sporty Italian heritage, with most of their boots running fairly narrow. We were pleasantly surprised by the amount of wiggle room up front though, which allows for your toes to splay naturally rather than being unduly restrictive.
Walking boot manufacturers build targeted cushioning into their boots in the form of denser areas of foam within the midsole. Some go further than others in pursuit of comfort, and Scarpa have even coined a term for their product, calling it the IKS, or Interactive Kinetic System. These 5 shock-absorbing domes are designed to target high-impact areas of the foot and support the body in all the right ways during movement in the mountains. In use, we found the Rush TRK boots to offer good cushioning underfoot, with only a touch of trail feel. This makes them ideal for particularly rocky walks, where foot fatigue can come from repetitive pounding from below.
So comfort is great, and stability is fantastic, but what about traction? In this regard, the Presa outsole does a cracking job on a variety of surfaces. The compound is designed to be durable, and that means a tougher rubber that won’t prematurely break down when you slog over abrasive rocks regularly. This harder rubber compound inevitably results in less ‘stickiness’ on slick surfaces like rocks and tree roots, and although that is the case with the Presa outsole on the Rush TRK boots, Scarpa have done a decent job of minimising this effect. The result is a balance between durability and performance, with the boots holding firm on all but the greasiest rocks.
Scarpa Rush TRK GTX Review: Conclusion
Scarpa have hit the nail on the proverbial head with the Rush TRK boots, managing to combine durability and stability with comfort. Although on the stiffer end of lightweight walking boots, the Rush Trail still falls squarely into that fast and light, hard-charging category.
In our eyes, they compare very favourably with the likes of Salewa’s Mountain Trainer and the La Sportiva TX4 Mid. These are all boots designed for heading into the mountains, rather than ambling along lowland footpaths but they don’t weigh you down in the process.
So, if you’re looking for durable but high-performing walking boots for the long haul and your preferred walking for activities involve hut-to-hut hikes in the Alps , climbing Ben Nevis , or fast and light wild camping trips in Scotland, then you can’t go far wrong with the Rush TRK boots.

Hands-On Review. The most recent version of the classic Scarpa Kailash has a new midsole and sole design that strives to add more support. We still prefer lighter boots like the Lowa Renegade or the La Sportiva FC Eco 3.0 GTX - Women's for most applications. Performance Comparison
Written By Claire Giordano. The short version: the Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX are the single best hiking and backpacking boot I ever owned. Zero blisters during 100+ days of use. Exceptionally well made with great grip on any surface. Durable and robust so they handled off-trail travel and a heavy pack with ease.
The Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX is an all-around solid backpacking boot but lacks any special attribute that helps it to stand out from other boots in the test. The Kailash Trek GTX is constructed of a 1.8mm suede leather/nylon combo upper (with waterproof Gore-tex lining) and a tough TPU toe-cap. The boots aren't all that heavy; the supple suede leather upper and lightweight PU mid-sole helps here, and that combo also aids in ensuring there is ample flex in the boot.
The Bad. Heavy. Poor breathability. Unbalanced weight. THE VERDICT. The Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX is a heavy boot, that will probably last longer than most others in the test set, but its weight and lack of commensurate protection sank its score in our ratings. The Scarpa Kailash Trek GTX is a heavy, high-ankled trail and mountain boot.
