Exclusively inclusive river cruising

Journey from London to Paris by way of a River Seine cruise filled with Tauck exclusive experiences... Private tasting tours, from wine to cheese to chocolate... discover treasured Parisian landmarks, steeped in history, culture and art... and return home with tales of adventures that become more exciting with each retelling.

Wind through fishing ports and medieval towns, tasting Normandy cuisine, visiting the D-Day invasion beaches of Normandy, finding the deep essence of calvados, pausing in ancient abbeys and the picturesque haunts of Impressionist painters, dining at a chateau in Rouen, exploring cobblestone lanes, walking in Monet's garden at Giverny, visiting Van Gogh's muse in Aubers-sur-Oise, a visit to a private castle, and incomparable Paris... well, riverboating seems like the only way to go! Private tasting tours, from wine to cheese to chocolate... a tale of two cities you'll want to tell over and over again.

Paris to Normandy – The River Seine

A private evening at château du taillis, enjoying the pleasures of normandy with a private evening at château du taillis.

Prepare to be pampered during an evening of finery and fun at a grand 16th-century Renaissance château set on a park-like estate in the Normandy countryside not far from the Seine. Built in 1530 atop the foundation of a fortified 13th-century castle, the Château du Taillis boasts a 300-year medley of architectural styles that reflect the tastes and times of its owners. Today, you'll own the night at the château as you are feted at a private reception and dinner inside its opulent ballroom, music playing.

Tauck Exclusive – Early-opening at Monet's Giverny

Discovering monet on an early-opening visit to his home and gardens in giverny.

Impressionist master Claude Monet arranged the compositions of his garden landscapes often by rearranging his garden. It was, after all, his outdoor studio. And since it's carefully maintained to look like it did during the painter's lifetime, you can sense what it was like to be present at the moment when life became art. Observe his water lilies in a book or a print – or even better, on canvas at the Musée de l'Orangerie in Paris – then experience them firsthand, where art becomes life, at his restored home and gardens in Giverny... where you'll enjoy a Tauck Exclusive early-opening visit to this remarkable place before the normal daily crowds appear.

Of the 4 Tauck tours we have taken, this was the best so far. The tinerary was fun and interesting every day, start to finish!

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Because you will be cruising on a river and not on the open sea, you are never far from land and, therefore, there is no doctor onboard the riverboat. In case of emergency, we can easily dock the boat and call for an ambulance or medical assistance.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

The riverboat is registered in Basel, Switzerland. Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey.  You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here .

If you are a resident of another country , please contact the French and British embassies or consulates to determine what vaccinations may be required for you to visit.

To enjoy this cruise, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. The amount of walking you do, however, is at your discretion.

The riverboat has four decks: Emerald, Ruby, Diamond and Sun. The elevator runs between the Diamond Deck and the Dining room, which includes stops at the Lounge and the Ruby Deck. There is no chair lift between any of the decks.

On the Emerald deck, you will find a Fitness & Massage Center on board.  The Fitness Center is complimentary and includes a limited variety of fitness equipment such as treadmills, stationary cycling machines and free weights.  Massages are available for a fee in a private room off of the Fitness center. The water on board the ship is potable and complimentary bottled water is placed in your cabin each day. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking is not permitted in any cabin, restaurant, lounge or any other interior space.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate service animals on any river cruise for medical and legal reasons.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

On board the riverboat, smoking is permitted in a limited area of the Sun deck. Smoking (including e-Cigarettes) is not permitted in any cabin, the restaurant, the lounge or any other interior space.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here .

The weather in London and Paris is variable. Generally, daytime temperatures in the spring and fall range from 50 to 65 °F (10 to 18 °C) and in summer, 65 to 75 °F (18 to 24 °C). Rain falls evenly throughout the year and averages 1.5 to 2.5 in (38. to 64 mm) per month. Europe has experienced unusually warm temperatures during the summer months in recent years, so do include some lighter clothing in your travel wardrobe.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website, noaa.gov , by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

During evenings aboard the riverboat, dress is resort casual.  Items such as slacks and collared shirts are appropriate for men.  For women, slacks, a dress or a skirt and blouse are suitable.  For dinner and throughout the evening, guests should refrain from wearing shorts, t-shirts, flip-flops or sneakers.  Your journey also includes one or two special occasion dinners, where a sport coat and tie for gentlemen and a dress/pantsuit for ladies are suggested.  (Your Tauck Director will advise you prior to those evenings.)

Valet laundry service is available at the hotel and on the riverboat for a fee. There is no valet dry cleaning available on the riverboat. Ironing facilities are available on the riverboat by request to the front desk. Category 7 cabins feature their own irons and ironing boards. For other cabins, they are available by request from Reception.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed. No medications are sold on board the riverboat.

We suggest that you pack the following items your journey:

  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • Swimwear for the whirlpool on the riverboat and for the pool at the Trianon Palace and Spa Versailles Hotel
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents to be secured in the safe in your hotel room or cabin

From romantic Paris, we slip our moorings and commence our wonderfully scenic cruise along the beautiful and majestic Seine into the heart of one of France's most historic and picturesque regions, Normandy. With time to enjoy the historic little town of Les Andelys en route, we continue our journey along the Seine’s sweeping meanders, before exploring the delights of Rouen, one of Europe’s finest medieval cities with its stunning cathedral and tangle of atmospheric winding streets.

Passing the legendary Jumiege Abbey, we moor in the pretty village of Caudebec with time after dinner for an evening stroll in this most typical of French villages. Then to Bayeux, spared significant war damage, it retains its wealth of splendid buildings as well as the legendary and stunning tapestry for which it is so famed. We also see some of the many thought-provoking monuments and places along the Normandy coast and reflect on the remarkable story of the D-Day landings on our visit to Gold Beach and the remnants of Mulberry Harbour. Our cruise would not be complete without a visit to charming Honfleur - its near perfect waterfront of tall pastel-coloured  18th century houses, traditional shops and maze of streets providing the inspiration for the Impressionist painter Claude Monet to paint here many times.

Countless sleepy villages silently drift by as we arrive in delightful Vernon, from where we take the short drive to Giverny visiting Claude Monet’s home and one of the world’s most famous and most painted gardens. Enjoy the quintessentially half-timbered streets of Vernon before we continue on to our final destination, one of the world’s most iconic and romantic cities, Paris. From the Notre Dame to the Arc de Triomphe, the Sacre-Coeur to the Eiffel Tour, the Louvre to the Pompidou Centre, the smart shopping of the Galeries Lafayette to bohemian Montmatre, the list is endless and the variety arguably unmatchable; this breathtaking city never fails to inspire no matter how many times you get the chance to visit.

Embark in Paris

On arrival, transfer by coach to your cruise ship moored on the River Seine in the heart of the city. The friendly crew will welcome you on board, helping you settle into your spacious and exquisitely furnished accommodation – you’ll immediately feel at home.

This evening you enjoy your first sumptuous dinner, served in the ship’s restaurant.

Route Map

Les Andelys

During the night our ship slips her mooring and, as you enjoy breakfast, the landscape passes by serenely and you quickly get used to this luxurious sightseeing experience. Rounding a sweeping bend so typical of the Seine, we reach the town of Mantes-la-Jolie with its imposing church – so large and architecturally impressive it could be a cathedral – while straight ahead is a medieval stone bridge. The central section of the bridge was destroyed during the Second World War and never repaired – it’s the first of many poignant reminders that this region of France has been a battleground for centuries.

Beyond Mantes we encounter another typical feature of the Seine as it flows seaward – picturesque chalk cliffs, almost resembling a giant’s teeth. Beautiful villages like La Roche Guyon slide by, surrounded by bocage countryside of lush pastures and high hedgerows, countless cider orchards, half-timbered barns and ancient wooden farmhouses. We’re truly in the heart of one of France’s historic and stunningly attractive dukedoms – Normandy.

While you’re enjoying your first delicious lunch, the captain has skilfully berthed at Les Andelys, a small town dominated by one of the most spectacular sights along the entire valley – Château Gaillard. This afternoon we discover the story behind this remarkable castle. The remarkable Château Gaillard guards the apex of the river bend and was built by Richard the Lionheart in the 12th-century to defend Rouen from the French.

Besieged many times during the turbulent history of northern France, Château Gaillard is now one of the most dramatic ruins in the region.

Included experience:

Visit to Les Andelys and Château Gaillard.

Les Andelys, France

We awake in Rouen, Normandy’s capital, one of Europe’s finest medieval cities and scene of many momentous events over the centuries. Pride of place on our guided tour of the city belongs to its stunning Gothic cathedral, which was immortalised by the great Impressionist Claude Monet in a series of 28 paintings showing the facade at varying times of day and in different weather conditions. Briefly becoming the world’s tallest building when the soaring spire was added in the 19th century, the cathedral is also notable for the recumbent statue reputedly containing the heart of Richard the Lionheart.

Rouen’s beautifully tangled alleyways are a revelation, lined with antique shops, tasteful boutiques and, of course, countless restaurants serving exceptional local cuisine emphasising the country’s outstanding gastronomic heritage. The Place du Vieux-Marché is one of the city’s most poignant spots; a large cross marks the point where the ‘Maid of Orléans’ Joan of Arc was burned at the stake for her beliefs.

Cruise towards Caudebec-en-Caux

During another superb lunch we cast off to navigate through yet more twists and turns, chalk cliffs and a landscape of forest-covered hills that are designated as areas of outstanding natural beauty and sanctuaries for diverse wildlife, including deer and wild boar. Another highlight of the valley soon greets us – the ethereal ruins of Jumièges Abbey. Founded in the 7th century, it was consecrated in the presence of William the Conqueror and was an important political and religious centre until it was sacked in the 16th century.

Should you wish, why not arrange to visit the wheelhouse, the Captain is always delighted to explain to those interested how the highly sophisticated navigation and safety systems operate. In the late afternoon, we moor in the pretty town of Caudebec-en-Caux.

After dinner, enjoy the laid-back tones of a guitarist singing traditional French melodies.

Guided tour of Rouen, visit to Caudebec-en-Caux & French guitarist performance.

Rouen Cathedral

Bayeux & Arromanches

After breakfast you’ll be ready for a full-day tour exploring two of the most important aspects of European history – the Bayeux Tapestry and the D-Day landings. (Please note lunch is not provided today.)

Bayeux itself is a delightful town with a historic core that escaped the ravages of war, so you can marvel at its many splendid buildings including the grand Gothic cathedral. But, of course, Bayeux is most famous as the home of the tapestry telling the story of the Norman invasion of Britain in 1066 in glorious detail. Among its 75 scenes are the coronation of Harold following the death of Edward the Confessor and his subsequent demise at the Battle of Hastings, which led to William of Normandy invading England and becoming king.

The 230-foot-long tapestry is made up of nine panels of extremely delicate embroidery – gazing at its wonderful depictions of the battle and the period’s architecture, weapons and everyday life, you’ll appreciate why the Bayeux Tapestry is arguably the finest relic of the Middle Ages.

Arromanches

This afternoon we drive to Arromanches, where you will have free time for lunch. Then enjoy a visit to a museum dedicated to the ‘longest day’ where you can still see remnants of the two Mulberry harbours constructed for the landing craft.

Leaving Arromanches, we continue to the British Normandy Memorial – unveiled in 2021, the 77th anniversary of the D-Day landings. From here you have best point of view to Gold Beach, one of the five main landing sites on D-Day, when Allied forces surged into Normandy to begin the liberation of occupied Europe. Casting your eyes across the sand to the water’s edge, it’s sobering to consider that on 6 June 1944 around 25,000 British troops came ashore on this one beach with 400 killed by the defenders. We will then drive back to the ship moored in Caudebec.

After a day recalling such momentous events and the stories surrounding them, thoughts turn again to the culinary delights awaiting you in the refined comfort of the ship’s restaurant.

Visit to the Bayeux Tapestry & the D-Day Normandy Beaches.

Bayeux Tapestry

Honfleur is often regarded as the most picturesque spot on the northern French coast, and after breakfast we make the short journey to this delightful town and enjoy a guided tour. Its old harbour, sheltering both fishing boats and luxurious pleasure craft, is beautifully preserved and surrounded by a perfect waterfront of pastel-coloured 16th- to 18th-century houses, many converted to seafood restaurants.

Watch the talented artists capturing the captivating views along the waterfront, while the intricate maze of streets behind is also well worth discovering. The eaves of the tall half-timbered buildings almost touch, and on the streets below is an abundance of traditional shops selling antiques, books and fine foods. Honfleur’s most famous son is Eugene Boudin, one of the forerunners of Impressionism and a friend of Claude Monet, who also painted the harbour many times.

Cruise towards Vernon

After returning to the ship for lunch, we slip our mooring and begin our passage back upstream, retracing the river’s winding course, its huge variety of wildlife, enchanting scenery and forests, all reflected in differing colours in the sparkling waters. Villages slip by, birds glide on thermals rising from the surrounding cliffs, it’s an ideal opportunity to join new friends for a chat. Squeeze in a spot of reading on the Sun Deck or simply recline, letting the gentle breezes lull you into a relaxing doze.

By this stage of your cruise, you’ll be totally unwound, and modern life will seem very distant.

Guided tour of Honfleur.

Honfleur

Giverny & Vernon

Claude Monet's house & garden in Giverny

One of the great delights of river cruising is the magical sensation of waking up in a different place from where you were the night before. This morning the ship has moored in delightful Vernon, and we take the short drive to Giverny to visit Monet’s garden and house.

The artist himself called his garden his ‘most beautiful masterpiece’, and it’s certainly one of the world’s most photographed and painted, ideally viewed in the delicate morning light. In the Japanese-inspired water garden, shaded by great weeping willows and surrounded by bamboo, rhododendrons and azaleas, is the lily pond where he painted his extraordinary Les Nymphéas (Water Lilies) series. There’s ample time to wander here, absorbing the tranquil atmosphere while marvelling at the light bouncing off foliage of every hue and the magical reflections dancing off the water.

After another leisurely lunch on board, you can explore Vernon’s quaint buildings before embarking on our cruise to Paris. As the sun sets on the shimmering Seine and the Norman countryside recedes into dusk, it’s a perfect time to reflect on your few days cruising among the creamy chalk cliffs and charming villages of this splendid river.

Visits to Claude Monet's house and garden & Vernon.

Vernon

We have arrived in Paris and this morning we take a sightseeing tour of this amazing capital, one of the world’s most iconic cities. We'll see many of the outstanding monuments Paris has to offer - including the Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame Cathedral, the Eiffel Tower, the Trocadéro, the Musee D'Orsay and much more before returning to the ship for lunch. You are also welcome to stay in the city and frequent one of the city's many cosy cafés.

After lunch, your afternoon is free to enjoy Paris and the many attractions of this amazing city. We are moored close to a well-connected RER station which allows easy access for you to tick a few items off your bucket list. You could see the grand Place de la Concorde, the largest square in the city, which shows off 18th-century French architecture at its best, visit Galleries Lafayette - the historic high-end department store - or the Musée d’Orsay, home of the world’s finest Impressionist art collection.

Alternatively, you may wish to simply stroll along the Champs Elysees, enjoy a walk in the Tuileries Gardens or perhaps wander through the café lined streets of the city.

Paris is everything you imagine it to be – romantic, inspiring, vibrant – even outrageous – but best of all Paris is unique, and a fitting finale to a wonderful cruise.

After dinner tonight, there's the chance to enjoy more famous French melodies and songs performed by a professional accordionist.

Guided tour of Paris & accordionist performance.

river cruises paris to normandy 2023

Karen Lucke

This trip was worth every cent..

This was our first Viking cruise and there are not enough adjectives to describe how pleased we were. The staff was like having your own personal staff on hand. The food was fabulous. The Program Director, Ken, was an informative pleasure. The crew, well there are not enough words to say how wonderful. One example is after a chilly day on our return to the boat they had hot mulled wine at the gangway, it truly is the little things that make a difference. The tours were all winners, especially since many places were closed for the season but Viking was able to schedule a visit. This trip was worth every cent! We loved it so much we are in the process of booking our 4th cruise!

Louise & George Groeber

By far one of the best..

We have travelled on 4 Viking cruises and enjoyed each immensely. The Paris & Heart of Normandy itinerary was by far one of the best. Each small town we stopped at was full of charm and history. The day in Normandy will be a forever memory and was handled beautifully by the Viking staff.

Patrick and Suzanne

Satisfied Guest

The most amazing trip i have ever experienced..

We were planning our next trip before this one was even finished. This trip was the most amazing trip I have ever experienced. The ship and our rooms were always spotless, the food the chef prepared each night was unbelievable and the staff was awesome . . . so much fun, friendly and professional. The included excursions were very informative and the guides were very knowledgeable. I’d give Viking 10 stars if I could. HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend them. It was definitely a trip of a lifetime. Until the next one, that is.

I can't begin to say enough of this cruise experience.

This is my second river cruise with Viking. I look forward to my next one. The staff was so friendly and hospitable. They were so much fun and always in good spirits. It was so well organized. The excursions were so organized and the guides were so kind as well. Over the top! I tell everyone it is a must, a river cruise. Food, drinks everything, an A plus! Look forward to the next one. I can go on and on . . . Thank you, Viking️

Rich & Angela K

The cruise was amazing..

This was our first Viking cruise and it will definitely not be our last. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. The cruise was amazing and the onboard staff were unbelievable. We had the best time, taking in Paris on the three-day extension and cruising up and down the Seine for seven days, experiencing all the sights and being led on amazing tours by such great guides. Accommodations, food and service were excellent. Thank you Viking for the best trip ever.

Go see the world.

Enjoyed the Paris and the Heart of Normandy cruise plus the add on to London and Cambridge. We have done four river cruises and enjoyed them all. We are now planning a Viking ocean cruise. We liked meeting many people with similar interests—go see the world!

Sharon & Anne’s Group

Wonderful guides..

The most wonderful day excursions included in the trip with wonderful guides. The BEST was Strasbourg and our guide. Her knowledge and passion made this a highlight of our trip.

Greg & Lisa

Absolute joy..

My husband and I took the Normandy Beach tour for our first Viking cruise. The ship was absolutely gorgeous, there was no request too little or too small that wasn’t met beautifully. Our ship was extra special because everyone’s last port was to see Normandy. That meant that we were traveling with men and women who have served our country, past present and future. Every single minute of every single day was absolute joy. I will sail on Viking, and only Viking, again and again.

Russell Tarner

Tour guides made visits to each site meaningful..

The staff on the Viking Kadlin was remarkable. Friendly and competent, all spoke English and took care of every request. Enjoyed this cruise immensely. The tour guides on our land visits were extremely knowledgeable and made our visits to each site meaningful. Had very good evening lectures on Normandy cheeses and local history. Great cruise. Look forward to visiting another area with Viking in the future.

What we expect from a Viking experience.

The staff lived up to the high standards of Viking in all the service and support we received. The extension to Nice was very well planned and the hotel location was excellent. The staff was very helpful and encouraging. The cruise was, again, up to what we expect from a Viking experience… The Paris extension was well planned and the hotel was in an excellent location. Staff was extremely helpful. Tour guide for our three tours was the best we have ever had. This included the Paris tour, The Louvre and Versailles.

Linda & Jim Tabor

Ability to take the trip at your own pace..

We are constantly bragging to friends about our Viking travels. This last trip from Paris to the Normandy Beaches was exciting, but very relaxing. The accommodations were outstanding. We had a French balcony stateroom which was great for watching the river float by and observing the countryside. The room was always kept clean and maintained. We had everything we needed, including Wi-Fi. The staff was exceptional and always greeted us with a smile. The food was outstanding ... truly an incredible chef! We enjoyed the well-paced tours and the ease of seeing the sites. One of the best qualities of Viking was the ability to take the trip at your own pace. If we wanted to visit other sites, we could; if we wanted to go off on our own, we could; or if we just wanted to take a nap in the afternoon or read on the Sun Deck, we could do that… On Viking river tours, you always get value for your money. So much is included: gourmet food, wine, coffee, tours and a warm, welcome attitude and pleasant atmosphere, and the ability to make the vacation your own.

Wade & Katherine

All tours and guides were expectional.

This was one of the best Viking cruises we have taken. All tours and guides were exceptional... We extended three days in Paris. Our guide gave us an orientation of the area and Metro travel which enhanced our exploration of Paris. The cabaret dinner/show was exceptional. Thanks Viking!

Rebecca Sanchez

The tour guides were expectional..

The cruise was well organized and the Viking staff was efficient, as always…The real charm of this cruise, however, lies in the destinations outside of Paris. The countryside of Normandy is beautiful; Rouen is magnificent. The D-Day beaches are not be missed; the gratitude of the French and their memorials to the American forces are touching. We must add that the tour guides were the best out of all the Viking cruises we have done. They were so well informed and passionate about the history and culture pertaining to their tours.

Charlie & Ann

A great way to celebrate our 50th anniversary..

A wonderful vacation—everything was great from beginning to end. The staff is top notch, always ready to help in any way they can. Our stateroom was great, from the flowers and fruit to the bottle of wine. The food and service was the best. A great way to celebrate our 50th anniversary. We would highly recommend Viking to everyone.

Pete & Sue Vindigni

Job well done, viking.

We found the trip very enjoyable. The weather was just perfect and the people were great! As always, Viking outperforms. There is no other way I would travel Europe than with Viking! The history, the guides and locations they stop at... A four-star floating hotel, great staff! Thanks Viking for another great river cruise.

Don and Monica

Exceeded our high expectations..

We had a wonderful experience on this cruise. Everything was of highest quality, from the rooms to the staff and food and excursions. Viking organized everything beautifully and we didn't need to worry about anything. We heard it would be wonderful and it exceeded our already high expectations. We will definitely travel with Viking again.

We felt like royalty.

I just returned from my first Viking cruise and it was incredible. I can’t say enough. Wonderful food, awesome staff, exceptional guides, beautiful sites. We felt like royalty. Thank you for the best cruise!

Viking does a very good job.

Overall, Viking does a very good job. The ships are nice, the staff is great and the food is delicious. The staff on the ship is the very best! Really appreciate the free Wi-Fi. We are happy.

I would tell anyone I know to seriously consider Viking.

I like the size of the ship and number of people on board. I would tell anyone I know to seriously consider Viking if they are considering a river cruise!

A stress-free way to travel.

The food and wine were enjoyable and the excursions were informative. A stress-free way to travel.

Judy and Cal

Perfect cruise..

This was our first river cruise with Viking and we loved it. We were celebrating some challenges and the cruise was perfect. Our stateroom was wonderful; the crew members were friendly and helpful; and the food was exceptional, as were the shore excursions. I loved Giverny and Monet’s house, and relaxing as we floated by the gorgeous French countryside. We loved it so much we’ve booked two more cruises with Viking. It far surpassed the huge cruise ship experience.

Rick and Joanne

A grand experience..

The trip was wonderful—excellent dining, great tours and many friendly fellow cruisers. The staff was exceptional and did all they could to make our trip a grand experience. We have booked our next cruise for 2015.

Viking does things right.

A friend and I just returned from our Paris & the Heart of Normandy cruise aboard the Viking Neptune. Based on my experience, a Viking trip is just right for you if you want to have a predictable, reliable travel experience. Viking does things right. The food is good and plentiful; the staff is courteous and helpful; the ship is clean and there is great emphasis on hygiene. It is also a relaxing and friendly cruise (only 140 guests on our ship) with great care given to make sure that every guest has a good experience. The price is fair and the cruise is a good value.

The stff was extraordinary!

Our second trip with Viking was amazing. The food was fantastic and so was the service. All the tours were great, and the guides were wonderful, including our director; she was so knowledgeable. In fact, all the staff was extraordinary. Our waiter was able to direct me to some local things to do. What a bargain, what fun! I have no complaints at all.

Les & Peg

Caring crew made the trip.

It was SPECTACULAR! Paris was wonderful and the ship, the food, the excursions were all fantastic, but it was the crew above all that made the trip. I have cruised often with many lines. Some had good service, some had great (and some, not so much of either) but nobody can top Viking. I have never felt so cared for, from the seaman that took our bags to the Captain himself, there was not one thing that this crew wouldn't have done to make the trip delightful. We have already booked our next Viking cruise and I can’t wait.

Linda & Larry DeSantos

Job extermely.

We just returned from our long-awaited Viking cruise from Paris to Normandy and we could not have been more pleased! From the staff to the food, the sights and the tours, it was all above expectations. We are already planning another Viking cruise to Portugal and Spain on the Portugal’s River of Goldcruise! Job extremely well done! Thank you!

Rich & Cheryl Haas

Tremendous  experience..

A truly tremendous experience! We did the pre-extension in Paris and the post-extension in London/Oxford for a totally perfect vacation. Viking reps were with us every step of the way for 14 days. The Program Director on Viking Pride was a wonderful guy with a great sense of humor. The service, the food and the excursions were all great. And the Paris Metro was quite easy to navigate. Très bon!

Scott & Leslie

A spectacular time..

This was our fourth trip with Viking and we had a spectacular time. As always we had wonderful food, delightful traveling companions, helpful staff and informative tours. We would not consider traveling with another river cruise company. Viking is the best!

Art, history, culture.

I am not an experienced traveler and was a little apprehensive traveling by myself. The Viking representatives were kind and patient in answering all my pre-trip questions. I traveled on Viking Spirit and it would not have been humanly possible to make the trip any more perfect! From art, history and culture, to the professionalism and warmth of the staff and the terrific people I met, the trip was absolutely wonderful.

Bob & Debby Harris

Wonderful and memorable..

Returned home yesterday from our wonderful cruise aboard Viking Pride. It was a truly wonderful and memorable trip! We loved Paris, but we loved the towns we visited along the Seine even more. Everyone we encountered was pleasant and kind; aboard ship, the staff was superb. Our Program Director must be the hardest working man in France, and the wait staff, concierge, housekeeping were all first rate. Our meals were delicious, accompanied by complimentary wine that flowed generously. We will always fondly remember our adventure in France!

Richard & Mary Lewis

Above and beyond..

Outstanding service! We were traveling with my parents and when my dad got sick the staff were so helpful. They went above and beyond! A few things you should know, the tour is a bit leisurely paced so if you are accustomed to a fast-paced tour you will need to adjust. Check-in time is 3:00; we were hoping to get in our room earlier since we arrived at 9:00 and had been up over 24 hours by the time we finally got in our room. We will travel with Viking again but next time we will fly in a day early.

Maisy & Hannah

We can't wait to travel again with this company..

We celebrated Hannah’s 13th birthday on Viking Spirit. The entire staff was wonderful and they made Hannah feel special. This was my fifth Viking trip and we can’t wait to travel again with this company.

John Rowan & Terri Woodmansee

One of the greatest vacations ever..

We have just returned from one of the greatest vacations we have ever taken. The crew of Viking Spirit was attentive and wonderful. The meals were fantastic and a true culinary experience. This cruise is the most wonderful and cost-effective way to experience Paris and the historical sites of Normandy. We highly recommend this cruise!

Dave & Lavonne Suwalski

Viking did an outstanding job..

We took our third cruise with Viking in April 2010 and had a wonderful time in Paris and on Viking Spirit. As we have come to expect, the captain and crew were outstanding with a special thanks to housekeeping who went far and above what I have encountered in many 5-star hotels. The local tour guides were the best we’ve encountered so far. There were additional challenges for the crew due to the Icelandic volcano shutting down air space; many potential travelers could not fly to Europe and some were not able to fly home at the end. Viking did an outstanding job helping people rebook flights and allowing anyone from the previous cruise to stay on board and take part in our cruise. A class act! Now for our big decision: Will it be China or Russia next?

Elaine Pittell, Top Flight Travel

Excellent in so many ways..

As a travel agent, I decided to take your Paris & the Heart of Normandycruise. It was excellent in so many ways. The daily news from home and abroad, the hot soup ready for us when we returned from a cold evening out and about, comfortable beds, the wonderful library with travel books and games and so much more. Your company is amazing and so thoughtful for their passengers. My husband and I will personally take another trip one of these days.

James & Marian Berray

Pleased with the trip.

We wanted to tell you how pleased we were with the trip. We can’t say enough good things about the courteous and friendly staff! All in all we loved the whole trip. We would do another cruise if we could be promised a crew as wonderful as we had.

Sylvia & Arthur Kelts

Stafff couldn't have been more friendly..

We wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our Paris & the Heart of Normandy cruise this past week. The ship was great, your staff couldn’t have been more friendly or efficient and the food was wonderful. We enjoyed the companionship of new friends and had an overall wonderful experience.

Keith & Lynda Tanner

The food was fantastic..

The sights and tours were excellent and extremely well organized. The food was fantastic and the staff and tour guides superb! We will definitely book with Viking in the future.

Boats cruise the Seine river in a rehearsal for the Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony

Curious onlookers gathered on bridges as dozens of boats snaked along the Seine river on Monday in a rehearsal for the Paris Olympics’ unique opening ceremony next month

PARIS -- Curious onlookers gathered on bridges as dozens of boats snaked along the Seine river on Monday in a rehearsal for the Paris Olympics' unique opening ceremony next month.

A total of 55 boats made the journey from Pont d'Austerlitz, named after a French military victory in 1805, to Pont d'Iéna, a stone's throw from the Eiffel Tower, the nation's most striking and best known landmark.

Officials are confident that the near four-hour ceremony will run like clockwork on July 26.

“Six months ago we had like 10 minutes delay on the timing and today we are very close, almost to the second to our targets,” Thierry Reboul, the executive director for ceremonies said. “So it is very satisfying. We’ve respected an extremely precise level of timing.”

On the day of the eagerly-awaited event, around 200 Olympic delegations will join the parade on more than 80 boats. They will make the journey from east to west, along a six-kilometer (3.7-mile) route which has become a major talking point — for its audacity as a unique open-air event and for its exposure to potential danger.

Security concerns led French President Emmanuel Macron to say in mid-April that the ceremony could shift to Stade de France if the threat level was too high. But Reboul said Monday that authorities are preparing for the big day as originally planned, with no alternatives being prepared at this stage.

There will be a final rehearsal, involving the full armada of boats, before the opening ceremony — one which is expected to bring 100 world leaders to the city's embankments, where more than 300,000 people will watch.

“We will give our heart and souls to make it a great success for the French people,” France’s Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra said Monday. “They deserve it.”

The rehearsal saw 10 police speedboats shadowing the convoy, as well as speedboats equipped with television cameras. There were armed police officers stationed at various points along the way. The boats crossed 16 bridges, passing by iconic landmarks such as the green-tinged Grand Palais — where fencing and Taekwondo events will be held.

On each bridge, a few dozen people watched attentively.

“Fifty-five? That’s a lot of boats,” said 49-year-old Rosa Gabriel. Taking a break between walking from the Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral, she watched it from the Pont des Arts bridge — fondly known as Love Lock Bridge, with its thousands of personalized locks attached to the railings.

One tourist even mistook the scene for something else.

“Maybe they are making a movie," said Driss El Kaoutari, a 42-year-old from Morocco who was on vacation in Paris with his daughter.

What people actually saw were empty vessels bobbing slowly by. But they will be full of life, color, sound and movement next month.

“You will have many delegation members on the boats with their uniforms and their flags,” Reboul said. "Around them there will be many other things, as you can imagine.”

The water itself has become a sensitive and thorny topic for the organizers and politicians heading into the July 26-Aug. 11 Paris Games . A whopping $1.5 billion investment has already been made to improve the Seine's water quality, with Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo both promising to take a dip .

This time, it was Oudéa-Castéra's turn to give assurances about the river — where marathon swimmers and triathletes are set to compete during the Olympics.

She bristled a little when answering.

“Regarding the quality of the Seine's water, we are confident. You shouldn't ask us to be ready ahead of time,” Oudéa-Castéra said, adding that a new center for collecting waste will be opened next week.
