Five golfers in a montage

This year was the first year where the game of golf was seismically changed because of money. The emergence of the Saudi Public Investment Fund-backed LIV Golf has seen the landscape of the sport change, and as a result of that, players getting richer and richer like never before.

We've seen huge sums reported for some of the world's biggest names to join Greg Norman's start-up tour, with LIV spending just under $800m in 2022 according to reports. It has forced the PGA Tour to respond by opening its own purse strings, resulting in elevated $20m purses and continued rising bonuses in the FedEx Cup and Player Impact Program.

So, who won the most cash on course this year and how much? Here, we've tried to take a look at on-course earnings from the PGA and DP World Tours, bonus money from the FedEx Cup and Race to Dubai, Player Impact Program money and on-course earnings in LIV Golf. It's a tough task and the numbers have been rounded up to two decimal places where necessary.

PGA Tour earnings may be slightly inflated due to them counting since September 2021, when the 2021-22 season began, but the picture is quite clear and simple - the top golfers are earning obscene amounts of money, and this isn't even taking into account sponsorships and other investments that see net worths in the hundreds of millions for the biggest names.

Rory McIlroy was the highest earner of 2022 with $44.8m, with LIV Golf headliner Dustin Johnson second with $37.2m. Take a look at our full list below...

1. RORY MCILROY - $44.8m

Rory McIlroy with the 2022 FedEx Cup

The Northern Irishman had a stunning year on the course, wrapping up both the FedEx Cup and Race to Dubai titles as well as successful title defences at the RBC Heritage and CJ Cup. His FedEx Cup win was worth $18m alone and the Race to Dubai bonus was a cool $2m. The World No.1's $12m PIP money, from finishing second to Tiger Woods, was ultimately what pushed him ahead of Dustin Johnson.

  • PGA Tour: $10.6m
  • DP World Tour: $2.2m
  • FedEx Cup: $18m
  • Race to Dubai: $2m

2. Dustin Johnson - $37.2m

Dustin Johnson LIV golf press conference

DJ was a huge coup for LIV and played in all eight of the series' events in the debut season. He was reported to have been offered a fee of $125m to join the Greg Norman-fronted start-up - which we're not counting here - and his on-course earnings were also huge. He won $18m as the Individual champion and another $17m in on-course LIV earnings, both individually and through his share of the team winnings. The American also won around $1.6m on the PGA Tour prior to joining LIV in June to push him over the $37m mark. Not bad for a year's work.

  • PGA Tour: $1.6m
  • LIV Golf: $35.6m

3. SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER - $25.9m

Scottie Scheffler has already tasted Major success this year, can he win one of the remaining tounaments to add to the Masters?

Scottie Scheffler won four times in 2022, including at Augusta National to wrap up The Masters and his maiden Major title. He also shot up the rankings to become World No.1 for the spring/summer before losing it to Rory McIlroy later in the year. Other wins came at the Phoenix Open, Arnold Palmer Invitational and WGC-Match Play. His on-course earnings were around $14.6m, with additional money coming from the FedEx Cup ($5.75m) and PGA Tour PIP ($5.5m).

  • PGA Tour: $14.65m
  • FedEx Cup: $5.75m

4. Cameron Smith - $18.4m

The Aussie is another Major winner to have been offered a reported $100m+ to join LIV, but once again we won't be counting that. Smith won just over $10m on the PGA Tour to finish second in the season money list, $640,000 at the FedEx Cup Playoffs, $240,000 on the DP World Tour from his two events in Australia at the end of the year and $7.4m from LIV Golf, where he won the Chicago Invitational and finished second in the Team Championship finale. He also won the PGA Tour's flagship event, the Players Championship, where he pocketed a massive $3.6m winner's cheque.

  • PGA Tour: $10.1m
  • DP World Tour: $240k
  • FedEx Cup: $640k
  • LIV Golf: $7.4m

5. Branden Grace - $17.5m

Branden Grace takes a tee shot in the 2022 LIV Golf Invitational Chicago tournament at Rich Harvest Farms

Despite dropping to 179th in the world, we think that South Africa's Branden Grace was the fifth-highest-earning golfer in the world this year when it comes to on-course earnings. His rough total of $17.5m was made up of $16.6m won in LIV Golf, $800,000 on the PGA Tour and just shy of $100,000 on the DP World Tour. Grace won $8m for finishing second to Dustin Johnson in the LIV individual rankings and $4m for winning the Portland Invitational title. His team, Stinger GC, also won the inaugural event at the Centurion.

  • PGA Tour: $800k
  • DP World Tour: 100k
  • LIV Golf: $16.6m

6. JUSTIN THOMAS - $17.1m

Justin Thomas poses with the Wanamaker Trophy

The American won his second Major and second PGA Championship in 2022, which was a very lucrative year. The PGA Championship prize money was $2.16m and in total JT won over $6.8m on the PGA Tour. He picked up a further $2.75m in the FedEx Cup bonus payouts and $7.5m in the PIP, where he finished fourth behind Woods, McIlroy and Spieth.

  • PGA Tour: $6.8m
  • FedEx Cup: $2.75m

7. Xander Schauffele - $16.7m

Schaufelle celebrates his putt at the 18th hole

Schauffele won the Travelers Championship and Scottish Open in successive weeks in the summer and took home around $16.7m in on-course earnings for the year. The Olympic gold medallist won $7.7m on the PGA Tour and then an extra $9m in FedEx Cup bonus money ($4m) and PIP cash - where he came 7th.

  • PGA Tour: $7.7m
  • FedEx Cup: $4m

8. TIGER WOODS - $15m

Tiger Woods smiles

The Big Cat returned to the Major scene in 2022, incredibly making the cut at The Masters just 14 months after his horrific car accident. That was the only Major he won money at, taking home around $45,000 for his efforts. He and son Charlie also took home a similar amount for their finish at the PNC Championship. Luckily for Woods, he unsurprisingly won the Player Impact Program to take his earnings to just over $15m this year.

  • PGA Tour: $45k

9. WILL ZALATORIS - $14.9m

Zalatoris holds the trophy aloft

The talented American finished runner-up at both the PGA Championship and US Open in what was a very lucrative year. He also won his first PGA Tour title at the FedEx St Jude Championship. He won $9.4m on the PGA Tour, finishing third on the money list behind Scheffler and Smith, and then only won $500,000 in the FedEx Cup Playoffs after pulling out injured - picking up the last-place money. Another $5m came his way via the PIP to take his year earnings close to $15m.

  • PGA Tour: $9.4m
  • FedEx Cup: $500k

10. Jordan Spieth - $14.8m

Jordan Spieth

The three-time Major winning Texan won the RBC Heritage the week after The Masters for PGA Tour title number 13. His earnings on the PGA Tour were just over $5m plus an $825,000 bonus at the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Spieth, one of the biggest names in the sport, finished 3rd in the Player Impact Program to take home another $9m.

  • PGA Tour: $5m
  • FedEx Cup: $825k

Crunching the Numbers

The 5 most eye-opening takeaways from the final 2022-23 PGA Tour money list

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA - MARCH 12: Scottie Scheffler of the United States celebrates after making his putt to win on the 18th green during the final round of THE PLAYERS Championship on THE PLAYERS Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass on March 12, 2023 in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. (Photo by Sam Greenwood/Getty Images)

It was once the standard that largely determined whether PGA Tour pros kept or lost their playing privileges for the following year. These days, however, the end-of-the-season money list exists so far in the shadow of the FedEx Cup, you’re hard pressed to find it on the tour’s website. But found it we did—you can see the final tally here —as the 2022-23 edition became official upon the conclusion of last week’s BMW Championship (the $75 million on the line at the Tour Championship is technically not prize money but rather FedEx Cup bonus dollars).

A look at the numbers motivated us to take the extra step of compiling data for the past 10 years, along with snapshots from 2003, 1993 and 1983. Comparing all the crazy cash provides a fascinating picture of how things have changed over the years—and really changed the last few seasons. Here are a few things that caught our eye.

Holy hell, Scottie Scheffler just won a lot of money

Scheffler, who never finished outside the top 11 in a single tournament before the Open Championship, was insanely good this year, and his outrageous skill earned him a figure that is almost garish: $21 million and change to top this year’s list. For context, prior to 2022, just one player had ever earned more than $10 million in a single season, and that was Jordan Spieth in his wonder year of 2015. Then in 2021-22, Scheffler broke every record by earning $14 million. Now he has lapped himself, and if he can pull out the FedEx Cup title this week, he'll claim another $18 million.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/8/pga-tour-yearly-money-leader-chart-top-earner-v3.jpg

Mind you, this is about more than just success; the total money available to players this season on the PGA Tour exceeded $500 million for the first time, an increase of about $140 million last year alone. Scheffler was one of seven tour pros to earn eight figures this season (Jon Rahm was second on this year's money list with $16 million in earnings). So Scheffler's haul is a combination of great play and a rising tide.

That rising tide is raising most ships

Among the top 125 on the PGA Tour money list in 2023, the average earnings were $3.79 million, an increase of almost a million dollars from 2022's $2.84 million. If you look at specific positions on the money list, too, Si Woo Kim's 30th-place haul of $5.38 million is a jump of $2.5 million from K.H. Lee's 30th-place money in 2022; Sam Ryder in 70th ($2.36 million) beat Matt Jones' 70th total ($1.91 million); and you have to go down to 125th before you find that Nico Echavarria's $951,000 just fell short of Charles Howell III's figure of $1.03 million last year. In all, the only thing that stayed relatively steady was the number of players making at least a million dollars. After a big jump in 2021 from 112 to 124 (not counting the shortened COVID year of 2020), it went up to 126 last year, and back to 124 in 2023.

The rich are definitely getting richer

To the tour's credit, the emphasis on designated events and increasing top prizes didn't materially affect the earnings of the players lower on the list, although it's also a fact that the lion's share of the gains went to the top players. To some extent, that's again because of great results; Scheffler making 172 percent more than 2021 top finisher Jon Rahm isn't just about higher purses. But incrementally the higher positions on the money list saw bigger gains, at No. 30, Si Woo Kim saw a 60-percent increase; Ryder saw a 21-percent increase at No. 70, and once you got down to No. 125, there was actually a decrease in earnings. Even when you look at 2013, the amount made by the 125th player, Kevin Chappell, wasn't that far behind today's 125 at $647,000. One of the main points of the changes implemented this year was to funnel dollars to the best players, in a model that's more representative of their worth to the tour, and that very much came to pass.

1491557791

Warren Little

The prize increases at the top are outpacing inflation by a whole lot

In 1983, Hal Sutton was the top earner on tour, taking home $426,000. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics , that would be about $1.38 million today … a sizable increase, but nowhere near the reality of Scheffler's $21 million haul. You don't have to look at a 40-year gap, either; Tiger Woods' total of $8.5 million in 2013 would be worth about $11 million today. Again, not very close. It's happening at the bottom, too; the tour average for players in the top 125 of $116,000 in 1983 would only be worth $360,000 today, not the $3.8 million tour pros averaged in 2022-23. Golf has become a far richer sport for its top athletes.

This is almost definitely the new normal

This is just simple math; a big part of the changes this year were a result of the tour trying to compete with LIV Golf. If for whatever reason the merger doesn't go through, they're still going to have to compete with LIV Golf, and if it does go through, they'll have the assets of the PIF at their disposal. There's no scenario barring some kind of economic depression in which this very expensive toothpaste goes back in the tube. If anything, you'd expect it to go up.

You'll be shocked to see LIV Golf's top money earners compared to their earnings on the PGA Tour

Pat Perez is unapologetic for joining LIV Golf and cashing in after more than two decades on the PGA Tour. Though no one feels sorry for a man who won nearly $29 million in prize money in 21 years on the tour, Perez wanted what everyone wants: Less work; more money.

He found it with LIV.

Trump on LIV Golf: Trump praises LIV, Saudis, says PGA Tour is stupid ... 'Something should happen' to tour leaders

Perez is part of the Dustin Johnson's 4 Aces, which won LIV's team championship at Trump National Doral Sunday. The title pushed Perez's season earnings above $8 million.

LIV, financed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, distributed $255 million in prize money in 2022, including $30 million in bonuses. In all, 52 golfers earned more than $1 million.

Here are the top 10 on LIV's money list for its inaugural year and how this year compares to their time on the PGA Tour. Jupiter residents swept the top three spots.

1. Dustin Johnson

LIV: $35,637,767 (8 events). PGA: $74,897,059 (15 years)

Johnson's total breaks down to $10,575,267 in individual prize money, $7,062,500 in team prize money and an $18 million bonus for winning the individual title.

By comparison, Scottie Scheffler led the PGA Tour money list last season, winning $14.05 million in 25 events.

Johnson, 38, captured LIV's triple crown, topping the money leaders list and winning the individual championship and team championship.

"You add up the numbers and it was great but I played good ... I didn't play my best," Johnson said. "So it always could be better."

2. Branden Grace

LIV: $16,634,666 (8 events). PGA: $12,296,547 (12 years)

Grace's $8 million bonus for finishing second in the individual competition pushed him to the No. 2 spot on the money list. Grace's largest payday was $4 million for winning the Portland event. His team, captained by Louis Oosthuizen, made $2.125 million on the season.

Grace, 34, said he thinks being part of a team, "brings the best out of me."

3. Peter Uihlein

LIV: $12,814,786 (8 events). PGA: $4,043,733 (10 years)

Uihlein, 33, earned a $4 million bonus for finishing third in the individual standings. He also made $3 million for being a part of team Smash, captained by Brooks Koepka.

In eight events, Uihlein more than tripled his PGA Tour earnings. He played in 126 events on the tour.

Uihlien is leaving Koepka's team next season to join 4 Aces.

4. Patrick Reed

LIV: $12,210,714 (7 events). PGA: $37,065,581 million (12 years)

Reed, 32, made about one-third the money in seven events on LIV as he did in 268 events on the PGA Tour. His winnings more than doubled what he made in any one year on tour. More than $7 million of Reed's earnings came from being part of Johnson's team.

"To come out and play the way we did through the season is unbelievable," Reed said about 4 Aces. "Can't wait for next year to keep it going."

5. Talor Gooch

LIV: $10,374,500 (8 events). PGA: $9,153,099 (6 years)

Gooch, 30, was a major contributor to Johnson's team and was rewarded with more than $7 million of his total coming from the team's earnings. Despite that, he will be moving to Bubba Watson's team next year.

Gooch never earned more than $3.8 million in one year on the PGA Tour.

6. Brooks Koepka

LIV: $8,276,100 (7 events). PGA: $37,987,257 (10 years)

Koepka, 32, finished strong, winning the event in Saudi Arabia and then leading his team to a third-place finish Sunday. The Jupiter resident won more than $5,651,100 in individual prize money and $2,625,000 in team money.

Koepka said he had no expectations when he joined LIV, rather "just kind of show up, see how it goes. But it's been fantastic so far. I've loved every minute of it."

7. Charl Schwartzel

LIV: $8,135,000 (8 events). PGA: $20,912,493 million (18 years)

Jupiter's Schwartzel started his season by winning more money in three days at LIV's inaugural event than he had in any year on the tour.

"It's beyond everybody's imagination," Schwartzel, 38, said. "You can't lie (and say) it's not about the money. There's a lot of money out there."

8. Pat Perez

LIV: $8,023,500 (8 events). PGA: 28,830,160 million (21 years)

Nobody rode the coattails of his team more than Perez. He made $961,000 in individual prize money and $7,062,500 because of 4 Aces' success.

9. Cameron Smith

LIV: $7,378,500 (5 events). PGA: $27,037,033 million (8 years)

Smith was No. 2 in the world when he joined LIV after winning the Open and in just five starts he made more money than most golfers who played in six or seven events.

Smith took over as captain for team Punch when he joined LIV and powered it to a second-place finish, which pocketed him more than $2 million in team earnings.

10. Eugenio Chacarra

LIV: $6,932,000 million (7 events). PGA: None (rookie)

Chacarra, 22, went from an amateur to joining LIV and winning nearly $7 million thanks to capturing the event in Bangkok. The Spaniard left Oklahoma State in the spring following the NCAA Tournament.

Chacarra joined Sergio Garcia's Fireballs team, which won more than $2.1 million on the season.

Scottie Scheffler poses with Memorial Tournament trophy

The Scottie Scheffler train rolled on last week, as the golfer finished one stroke ahead of Collin Morikawa at the Memorial Tournament for his fifth win of the season. The title was worth $4 million in prize money and pushed his 2024 winnings to a new PGA Tour record of $24 million.

Scheffler has now set a record three straight years on the PGA Tour with $14 million in 2022, $21 million in 2023 and $24 million in 2024—and this year, there are still three months of golf to be played. The huge payouts are a function of Scheffler’s dominant play, as well as massive increases in purses on the PGA Tour in response to the launch of LIV Golf .

The PGA Tour increased its prize money last year in response to LIV poaching its player roster. The Tour handed out more than $560 million in 2023, including $100 million for the Player Impact Program (PIP) and $75 million for the Tour Championship, up $140 million from the prior year; the PIP and Tour Championship bonuses are not counted as official prize money.

The PGA Tour bumped the total purse to $20 million and winner’s check to $4 million for most of its 14 newly dubbed “elevated” events—it marked a 47% increase from the payouts at those 14 events in 2022. The total purse and first-place purse matched what LIV put in place. In 2023, LIV paid out $405 million over 14 events, including $115 million in team prize money.

Scheffler is a huge favorite this week for the U.S. Open at Pinehurst at +320, followed by McIlroy (+1000) and Schauffele (+1200), according to DraftKings.

At 27 years old, Scheffler already ranks seventh on the career PGA Tour prize money list at $66.6 million.

Scheffler’s play has raised his off-course earnings from sponsors to roughly $20 million last year from Nike, TaylorMade, Veritex, NetJets, Rolex and GolfForever. He ranked No. 27 in Sportico ’s list of the 100 highest-paid athletes for 2023 with $52.3 million. Ten golfers cracked the list and earned $670 million from prize money, sponsorships, appearance fees and LIV signing bonuses, led by Jon Rahm at $203 million.

2024 Travelers Championship purse, prize money: Payouts for Scottie Scheffler, field from $20 million pool

The most lucrative season in pga tour history continued at tpc river highlands.

Travelers Championship - Round One

The 2024 Travelers Championship this week marked the last of eight huge-money signature events for the PGA Tour this season. Many such tournaments have been of the no-cut variety, like the Travelers Championship, though all of them have offered total purses of $20 million.

It is certainly a good time to be a professional golfer. It is also a good time to be Scottie Scheffler. With over two months left on the season, Scheffler had already set the PGA Tour's all-time earnings record entering the Travelers, breaking his prior record set last year at $21 million.

Scheffler only increased his total Sunday, now sitting at nearly $28 million in take-home pay by emerging victorious at a signature event for a fourth time this season. Combine that with his two other victories, and Scheffler is the first golfer since Tiger Woods in 2009 to win six times in a single PGA Tour season.

Here are your eight winners from signature events this season:

  • The Sentry: Chris Kirk ($3.6 million)
  • Pebble Beach Pro Am: Wyndham Clark ($3.6 million)
  • Genesis Invitational: Hideki Matsuyama ($4 million)
  • Arnold Palmer Invitational: Scottie Scheffler ($4 million)
  • RBC Heritage: Scottie Scheffler ($3.6 million)
  • Wells Fargo Championship: Rory McIlroy ($3.6 million)
  • The Memorial Tournament: Scottie Scheffler ($4 million)
  • Travelers Championship: Scottie Scheffler ($3.6 million)

This week's $20 million purse was split between 71 players. There were supposed to be 72 golfers in the field, but following his heartbreaking loss at the U.S. Open a week ago, Rory McIlroy withdrew from the event earlier in the week. McIlroy will next be seen when he returns to the Scottish Open as the reigning champion this July.

Let's take a look at the payout list for the 71 players who will be in attendance at the 2024 Travelers Championship.

Sunday Story-Lines: Travelers Championship set to culminate in big name shootout

Draws and Fades

Change Text Size

Cream has risen to the top at TPC River Highlands as a host of big names are set for a Sunday showdown for the final Signature Event of the season at the Travelers Championship.

Early pace-setter Tom Kim continued to play great golf and adds the 54-hole lead to his 18 and 36-hole leads this week. It was +900 for a wire-to-wire winner this week via DraftKings at the start of the tournament and Kim might have a few bettors hoping he keeps the pedal down one more day.

Kim fired a 5-under 65 to move to 18-under for the week, alone at the top of the leaderboard and one ahead of Scottie Scheffler and Akshay Bhatia.

A late blitz from World No. 1 Scheffler, which saw four consecutive birdies to finish his round of 64, has the Texan eyeing off a sixth win of the season as the betting favorite with a round to go.

Scheffler is now +150 to be the first player since Tiger Woods in 2009 to notch up six wins in a PGA TOUR season.

Bhatia birdied the final two holes to also post a 64 on Saturday, giving the pre-tournament longshot a real chance at a third TOUR win.

PGA Champion Xander Schauffele surged into the lead with three birdies in a row in the middle of the back nine before cooling off. A last-hole bogey could prove pivotal as it dropped him to 16-under and two back.

He’s joined at 16-under by Sungjae Im while Collin Morikawa is sixth at 15-under.

Here is a quick look at the latest odds and storylines heading to Sunday with my draws and fades below.

  • +150: Scottie Scheffler (-17, T2) – With a win the World No. 1 would make it six on the season and 12 in his career. Last player to have six or more wins in a TOUR season was Tiger Woods (6) in 2009.
  • +333: Tom Kim (-18, 1st) – Led after 18, 36 and now 54 holes. Three-time TOUR winner turned 22 this week and looking to be the first South Korean to win the Travelers Championship. Sits 61st in FedExCup looking to secure Playoffs this week.
  • +550: Xander Schauffele (-16, T4) – Chasing ninth PGA TOUR win, and second this season after his PGA Championship victory. Was Travelers champion in 2022 and leads the field in SG: Putting.
  • +700: Akshay Bhatia (-17, T2) – An 80/1 longshot pre-tournament showing he belongs. Seeking a third TOUR win, a second this season after winning the Valero Texas Open.
  • +1200: Sungjae Im (-16, T4) – Like Tom Kim, looking to be the first Korean to win the Travelers. Two-time TOUR winner but not since the 2021 Shriners Children’s Open. Second this week in Par 4 Scoring.
  • +1400: Collin Morikawa (-15, 6th) – Hunting TOUR win No. 7, a first since the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP last October. His last eight starts all top-25s including four top-4s.
  • +4000: Tony Finau (-14, T7) – Hoping for lucky TOUR win no. 7 on Sunday, Finau leads the field in Par 5 Scoring and Sand Saves.
  • +5000: Justin Thomas (-14, T7) – Last of his 15 TOUR wins came at the 2022 PGA Championship, over two years ago. Tied the hottest player on the Back 9 this week and leads Driving Distance.
  • +6600: Shane Lowry (-14, T7) – Former Open Champion won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans with Rory McIlroy but now chases a solo win. Third in SG: Tee-to-Green, fourth SG: Approach and fourth SG: Around the Green this week
  • +8000: Patrick Cantlay (-13, T10) – Shot 60 as an amateur at TPC River Highlands and might need to do so again to get ninth TOUR win and first since 2022 BMW Championship.
  • +10000: Cameron Young (-13, T10) – Rocketed into contention after an 11-under 59 in the third round. Just the 12th golfer to shoot sub-60 on the PGA TOUR. Still pining for a maiden TOUR win.

Xander Schauffele +550

Call me crazy but I am going back to the well on the man I picked pre-tournament and again after the second round. While his final hole bogey was far from a huge confidence booster and puts him behind Scheffler instead of on level pegging with him, it might be just the kick in the backside Schauffele needs. He thrives on people discounting him and his recent PGA Championship victory expelled any personal doubts. Schauffele is the value on the board as a former champion at TPC River Highlands AND as the leader in the field in Strokes Gained: Putting.

Akshay Bhatia, Sungjae Im, Collin Morikawa are all value bets in this situation also if you don’t love Schauffele. The fact Scheffler is in the final group has inflated the odds of others and given you a chance to take a calculated risk in a birdie fest. I’ve liked Bhatia all week and expect he can hold a place in the top five, Im has come from the clouds with an all-around game this week and Morikawa has been in exceptional form of late without winning. My lone concern with Morikawa is he will need to make all his putts on Sunday to make up his deficit. Remember also, six of the last eight champions here have come from the final group on Sunday. That puts another check in the Bhatia column.

Scottie Scheffler +150

Do I think Scheffler can’t win the Travelers Championship… of course not. He is the favorite for a reason and his finish of four straight birdies after a bogey was befitting of the best player in the world on Saturday. But I don’t like +150 in a shootout where putting will be the key down the stretch. If Schauffele, or someone else, can set a pace early and place the pressure on the greens for the final group then the odds become dangerous around Scheffler. Yes, you’re getting plus money when you might normally get negative odds, but it just feels like a trap play. I’ll eat my words, like I have many times with Scheffler before, if he pulls ahead and wins easily, but at the end of the day I’m trying to protect the bettors out there!

He won for the sixth time this season Sunday , taking home the title at the 2024 Travelers Championship after beating Tom Kim on the first playoff hole with a par. It’s his fifth win in a signature event this season and another $3.6 million prize he’s taking home.

For Tom Kim, while he won’t take home a trophy, he does collect $2.16 million for his best finish since winning at the Shriners Children’s Open in the fall.

New Englanders Michael Thorbjornsen, Keegan Bradley tie for 39th at Travelers Championship

Michael Thorbjornsen couldn't hold on to his top-25 place at the Travelers Championship, but the new professional hardly went home empty handed.

Michael Thorbjornsen took a step back in the final round of the Travelers Championship on Sunday in Connecticut, but the Wellesley native’s PGA Tour debut as a professional was still a successful one.

The 22-year-old finished in a tie for 39th following a even-par 70 in the final round, his 8-under 272 total 14 shots behind winner Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler, the world No. 1, beat Tom Kim in a one-hole playoff for his sixth PGA Tour title in his last 10 starts.

Thorbjornsen shot 72-64-66 in the opening three rounds to reach Sunday in the top 25, but his four birdies in the final round were offset by two bogeys and a 6 on the par-4 12th, where he drove the ball out of bounds.

He earned $85,000 from the $20 million purse.

Thorbjornsen, who tied for fourth at the Travelers as an amateur in 2022, earned his PGA Tour card by winning the PGA Tour University competition via his play last season at Stanford. He played the event at TPC River Highlands this year on one of four sponsor’s exemptions given out; as the Tour’s final Signature Event of 2024, the 71-player field was primarily limited to the world top 50 and winners of Tour events this season.

At 8 under, Thorbjornsen finished square with the field’s other notable New Englander. Hopkinton’s Keegan Bradley, last year’s Travelers champion , fired a final-round 66 despite also posting a double bogey on the 12th.
