14 funniest German memes

14 funniest German memes

Every day, memes work very hard indeed to fill the gap between what we feel and what we can communicate, so that we can laugh and forget about the ill realities of the world. Here are some of our favourite German memes.

German memes for all occasions

From the first moment that you open a German textbook to holding your new German passport in your hands, German memes can help you to communicate language learner frustrations, understand the national zeitgeist and learn your B-list German celebs from your B-list German politicians.

On the Deutsch meme scene, there are some particularly big hitter accounts to know, namely @alman_memes2.0, @deutschebahn_memes and for those of us in the capital, @berlinauslandermemes. Communicating the incommunicable, there is a funny German meme for every stage of your integration into the federal republic. Here are our top picks:

The German stereotypes meme

These ones are usually funny for outsiders looking in on Germany - perhaps the person you once were. Once you reach the stage of cultural integration which involves joining the chorus of eternal complainants but being automatically defensive when anyone expresses criticism which is based largely on German stereotypes, these Deutschland memes will have lost their initial tickle. The most famous of them all...

The German word for butterfly, Schmetterling, has been flying around in my head for over an hour now, and when I googled it a few memes like this came up. Am I alone on thinking that the German word is perhaps more beautiful than all the others? pic.twitter.com/UWay020ydw — Dr. Del A. Maticic (@maticiceronian) August 12, 2020

The learning German meme

Der , die , das  ( die, den, die, das, die, des, der, des, der, dem, der, dem, den ) offers an endless cave of confusion to be mined for memes by people taking  German courses at beginner, intermediate and advanced level alike. A meme much like this might be the first proverbial toe you dip into the deep, dark sea of German memes.

Puns: German word memes

You can now hear that " Schmetterling" is a more complex and subtle word than one Google of “funny memes deutsch” lead you to believe; a word that is rooted in the Slavic for “cream”, “ smetana ”, making this creature a diminutive “cream-ling”, as opposed to the “butter” of its similarly dairy-based, English-speaking cousin. It’s time to dig a little deeper than A1-level laughs and challenge yourself in the world of German pun memes…

No matter how good (well) you drive - trains drive goods! Dt. Wortwitz: gut = good, Güter = goods (besser = better) pic.twitter.com/sWrx364ai9 — Authentic German Learning (@AuthGerLearning) November 12, 2016

The German bureaucracy meme

You’ve finally landed, visa in hand, but your painful journey into the world of German bureaucracy is only just beginning. These ones cut deep - a meme genre about the great equaliser for new arrivals, dealing with Kafkaesque German bureaucracy. The first unavoidable step is making an  Anmeldung registration appointment , that is if you’ve been lucky enough to find a flat with Anmeldung …

The German efficiency meme

As you broke into a furious sweat trying to make your Anmeldung appointment, the first myth to be dispelled was that of German efficiency. You now know that the Bürgeramt  chaos is only the tip of the iceberg.

Now that you’ve settled in a bit and got some of your affairs in order, it's time to start appreciating Germany for what it truly is - often completely chaotic in many of the areas in which it is stereotypically thought to be excellently efficient.

The Deutsche Bahn meme

Six months have passed since your arrival and Deutsche Bahn’s mask of Pünktlichkeit has slipped to reveal its face of rosy-red embarrassment. Slating die Bahn is often called Germany’s national sport and you must learn how to play. Half of this slating is done in small talk and the other half is communicated through the medium of memes. There is no better place to passively pick up the lingo.

The German tourist meme

Now that you’re starting to feel more at home, you may start to feel at one with the people who once seemed so different. For now, that Ja-maste is limited to a lack of patience with tourists on the cycle path. The tourist you once were in your new home is now the subject of your mockery:

And the behaviour of the holidaying German tourists you once mocked in your home country now makes perfect sense; those sun loungers must be claimed and wearing those Birkenstocks barefoot has suddenly become a little too chilly:

Memes Berlin

If you’re living in Berlin , adding some socks to your stocks might have been the smallest of the radical changes to your appearance. You are now uniquely alternative, and you must go to great lengths to be perceived as such, even if that means looking like everyone else.

German humour and German language memes

You’ve transcended, you now laugh at German memes about Germany, but with the Germans and sometimes even in German. But don’t be caught laughing too hard now, the Auländerbehörde might hear you:

25+ Hilarious Germany Puns for Your Instagram Caption

Posted on Last updated: September 28, 2023

Have you recently been on a trip to Germany and have a ton of sweet content to share on Instagram? Here are my favorite German puns for Instagram captions. Take your pick, adapt a couple of them, and have fun with it!

Whether it’s a load of amazing photos, creative reels, or a story that you want to make an impact on, you’re going to want an eye-catching caption.

The best and most fun way to do that? Puns of course (especially these hilarious Germany puns for Instagram!) Who doesn’t love puns? People who don’t like fun, that’s who!

Living in Berlin with a German husband, I’ve both said and heard my fair share of Germany-related puns over the years.

Are you interested in traveling around Germany for free? Trusted Housesitters is a site where you can stay at someone’s house while they are away in exchange for watching their house or sometimes their pet.

It’s a great way to travel the world for free!

Some are definitely better than others, especially if you’re sharing them with non-German speakers, people who aren’t super informed about German culture, or the different smaller cities that are just as cool as the popular bigger spots.

The best tactic is to keep it simple and relatable. It’s always a good idea to link it to the visual content itself, so if you have a ton of delicious foodie snaps, go with a German food-related pun.

If you’re doing a lot of wandering around the city streets, go with a city-specific pun.

It’s all about making your post look and feel cohesive. This way you can get the most engagement and it’ll bring your photos and puns to life, and who doesn’t want that?

So, what creative, German-related travel puns are on the table for you to use? Let’s dive in and find out more!

How to Use These Funny German Puns & German Quotes for Instagram (or Any Social Media)

I’ve included a ton of amazing and funny German-related puns in this article, but before I go anything further, feel free to use any of these puns on Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, or wherever you want. If you want to tag me in your posts, feel free, I love to see all about your travels, especially considering Germany is my backyard!

If you don’t follow me already, you can find me pretty much on any platform as @wanderonwards – make sure you follow this actual verified account as there are currently a lot of spam versions of my account now, so make sure you’re following my actual account, and report any copycats!

Germany City Name Puns: Germany Instagram Captions

One of the most fun and easiest places to start when thinking about German puns is with the city or area you’re visiting. Who can forget the “Ich bin Berliner” mishap – in case you don’t know Berliner is not someone who lives in the capital city, it’s German for donut…

With so many great cities that rhyme or sound similar to so many other words, it kind of all comes together.

Here are some excellent, tried-and-tested examples that you can use, including Berlin puns for your Berling Instagram captions!

Or you can use these puns about Germany as a base to build on with your own creative, pun-friendly flair.

1. “Danube believe how beautiful this view is?”

2. “Potsdam, it’s hot out here!”

3. “Let’s be Frankfurt.”

4. “Brrrr-lin, it’s cold out here!”

5. “Having a mighty Rhine time.”

6. “What’s that new Cologne?”

7. “Let me play your Saxony-phone.”

8. “Let’s play Heidelberg and seek.”

9. “Do the Münster Mash.”

10. “Planning the perfect German itinerary doesn’t have to take a lot of Erfurt.”

11. “Gather around the Bonn-fire”

text says "Let's be Frankfurt"

In a subsect of German city-related puns, you can use German language words or the things that the city is known for. Plenty of cities have specialties that they’re well-known for from arts and culture to history, to food and drink, and beyond.

For example, “The street art in Berlin is very ad-mural-able.” Obviously accompanied by some gorgeous photos and videos of you touring the local street art. Sounds like Instagram gold to me!

German Language Puns

The next category of German puns that you can use for your Instagram captions is German language puns. Obviously, you’ll need to know a little bit of German , but you’ll also need to use basic words and phrases, or phonetic-sounding words that will translate well to non-German speakers.

Some great, Insta-friendly examples include:

12. “We’re getting dressed to the Neins.”

13. “Wunder lust.”

14. “You had me at hallo”

15. “Don’t be so bitte.”

16. “About to share some danke memes.”

17. “Would you be so kein?”

German Food Puns

One of the best things about visiting Germany is the culinary experience. There are a ton of great foodie destinations in Germany, depending on the city or area that you’re visiting.

Obviously, there are a lot of stereotypes here, primarily that German cuisine is predominantly made up of a lot of sausages. I mean, it’s not wrong when it tastes so right.

In addition to delicious sausages, you can also chow down on schnitzels, oozy cheeses, sauerkraut, pretzels, and a sort of pasta equivalent, spätzle.

There are a ton of tasty treats to demolish while you’re traveling around Germany, and if you love food and travel, photos of exciting foreign foods are always a surefire hit on Instagram and TikTok.

You can match one of these amazing German food puns to photos from a food tour or cooking class as great German Instagram Captions.

Got you feeling hungry? Get inspired for dinner and get some ideas for your Instagram captions at the same time with these pun-tastic captions!

18. “We have a Wiener schnitzel!”

19. “Taking cheesy selfies in Germany.”

20. “Don’t be such a sauerkraut.”

21. “A trip to Germany doesn’t have to take a ton of dough.”

22. “I’m looking for that spätzle someone.”

23. “I never sausage a delicious meal.”

24. “Stop being such a bratwurst.”

25. “Not the wurst day”

26. “No brat days in Berlin”

German Culture-Related Puns: The Best German Captions for Instagram

Our final category is more German culture-related puns. Think about the kinds of things that are quintessential to any trip to Germany. For many people, this means a lot of drinking.

Germany generally and Bavaria specifically are well known for their outstanding beers, so it’s no wonder that it’s a highlight for a lot of tourists.

One of the main times that tourists flood into Germany is during Oktoberfest. It’s a festival of all things Bavarian culture, including Lederhosen, Dirndls, and plenty of beer and bratwurst. If you’ve ever heard an oompah band and wondered where it gets played, it’s mostly at Oktoberfest.

Here are a few drinking-related Instagram captions:

27. “Pitcher perfect.”

28. “Ready or not, beer I come!”

29. “I make pour decisions.”

Another cultural reference for Germany is the bear – it’s the animal sigil – so it’s pretty common to see images of bears around the country. So, why not use the bear in your next Instagram caption with something like, “Can’t bear to leave Berlin.” I can’t bear to leave Berlin either!

So, enjoy this wide variety of amazing, German-related puns, and funny German captions for Instagram, for free for you to use across your Instagram, TikTok, Twitter feed, or wherever you share your travel photos and videos.

Captions are a great way of expressing yourself to your followers and audience, whether you know them in real life, or they’re strangers from further afield who like your content.

New followers can find you through your captions and it’s important to share your vibe so that people know what you’re all about. Puns show you’re creative and have a decent sense of humor, both great jumping-off points for building a successful travel-based account – trust me, I know!

Group of friends looking at German memes and laughing

The very best German memes

by Leona Quigley

Published on August 31, 2022 / Updated on January 5, 2024

Germans are not exactly famed for their good sense of humor. While we can argue about how much truth that stereotype holds ( German wit can be quite odd if you’re not accustomed to it), the Germans love an internet meme as much as the rest of us. The jokes Germans tell about themselves through memes can help you understand German culture. And German language memes can be an easy way of learning German while having a good chuckle. To save you some time scrolling endlessly through social media, here are some of the most clever, curious, famous and funny German memes we’ve found.

  • Es ist Mittwoch meine Kerle (It’s Wednesday my dudes)
  • The Berlin Unicorn
  • Not “lol”, “lül”
  • High time for wine
  • Angela abandons ship
  • This is… Spargel?

Learn languages at your pace

1. es ist mittwoch meine kerle (it’s wednesday my dudes).

germany trip meme

The “it’s Wednesday my dudes” frog is one of those curious pieces of internet culture that endures despite few really understanding where it came from and why it’s funny. Whilst the original was posted on Tumblr in 2014, and gained traction through a popular vine, its popularity in Germany skyrocketed in 2017, when the German version appeared on Reddit bedecked in Lederhosen and holding a healthy tankard of beer.

2. The Berlin Unicorn

germany trip meme

You visit Berlin in the warmth of summer, see the Brandenburger Tor, the Berliner Dom and Museum Island, sip a cold beer and think “what a city to live in!” Then you move here and notice some of the grimier corners, the skyrocketing rent and the broken glass. It’s a little dirty, a little shabby and a little bit gray. But at the end of the day that’s part of Berlin’s charm .

3. Not “lol”, “lül”

germany trip meme

Germany’s greatest scientist , Albert Einstein, explains why Germans should logically use “lül” instead of “lol”. As the blackboard states: “Instead of the Anglosaxon “lol” we should say “lül”. On one hand, it means “laugh terribly loud”. On the other hand, lül looks like someone smiling joyfully and throwing their arms up in the air.

4. High time for wine

germany trip meme

World leaders may not often seem relatable, but when they are, there’s sure to be a meme about it. This 2018 picture of then-chancellor Angela Merkel is just such a picture. Many took one glance at that picture and said to themselves: “I’ve been there too, Angela.” Having served as chancellor from 2005-2021, with many weighty political issues and some particularly tiresome world leaders, one could imagine she might need something a little stronger than a glass of vino!

5.  Angela abandons ship

germany trip meme

Another excellent Merkel meme, this one depicting the former Chancellor’s timely escape from politics into Ruhestand (retirement), which coincided with a series of electoral disasters for her party the CDU (Christian Democratic Union). While the CDU floundered, Angela avoided having to deal with the fallout just as smoothly as Captain Jack Sparrow hopping cleanly off a sinking ship onto the safety of a dock.

6.This is… Spargel?

germany trip meme

One of the great mysteries of German culture is the national obsession with asparagus or Spargel . April to June is known to Germans as Spargelzeit (asparagus time), the period when white asparagus is in season, when “white gold” fills the markets and asparagus dishes become the premier fare of many German restaurants. Their devotion to the vegetable is nothing less than Spartan.

Laugh and learn with German memes

Hopefully we haven’t encouraged you to fall down the rabbit hole of scrolling endlessly through internet meme pages. If you do though, why not do it auf Deutsch ? Just like books , podcasts and movies , funny German memes are a great way of learning the language and gaining greater insight into German culture.

Translation:

“Winter: brings regular cold weather with frost, snow, and wind each year

The Deutsche Bahn each year:”

This meme is making fun of the Deutsche Bahn, the company that operates long-distance trains within Germany. Especially in recent years, the Deutsche Bahn has experienced issues with delays and cancellations due to heavy snow and wind.

If you want to learn more about the Deutsche Bahn  auf Deutsch , you can take a look at  this Der Spiegel article  in German. It talks about why bad weather impacts the trains.

You could also read this hilarious article from Germany’s version of The Onion,  Der Postillon . It satirically claims that the Deutsche Bahn should become a casino since the arrival of a train is “purely based on chance.”

Or, of course, you can keep reading this article to enjoy some more funny German memes.

If you’ve spent time on YouTube looking for German content, you may already be familiar with Galileo. Galileo is a TV program that releases short documentary features. Some topics include what flight attendants do in a day or how budget supermarkets have such low prices.

Here, this meme pokes fun at Galileo’s filming techniques through a comparison to the film IT. (As a Stephen King fan, this meme is coming  right  for me.)

In a grammatical sense, one thing that stands out is the use of  man . This  man  is different from  Mann , the word for “man” in German.  Man  with one “n” is used as a general subject.

In English, this usage might translate as “ you  actually can’t film down here” or “ one  cannot film down here.”

germany trip meme

Translation: “How Dora stares when she’s asked where the mountain that she’s one meter away from is”

One interesting thing about this meme is the capitalization of “sie.”

“Sie” in German can mean either “you (formal),” “she,” or “they.” When it is used as “you (formal),” it is always capitalized, no matter where it appears within the sentence.

The “sie” in this meme, however, is “she,” which you can tell from the verb conjugation ( hat , not  haben ). For this reason, its capitalization is technically incorrect. This is a good reminder that even native speakers make “mistakes” sometimes when they write, which is good news for language learners!

I also would like to point out my love for Tyler the Creator (the person pictured) and how much I love that he’s in the meme. (chef’s kiss)

germany trip meme

“Students don’t have to go to school anymore because of corona

They still have to do assignments though”

This meme, interestingly enough, features US President Joe Biden.

“ Arbeitsaufträge machen “ means something like “ Aufgaben machen ,“ or to do school tasks. This meme is saying that, although kids don’t have to go to school, they still have to do schoolwork. (What a bummer!)

One thing to point out grammatically is the use of the accusative case after “ in .” “ In ” is a bit tricky because it’s one of several so-called two-way prepositions. Two-way prepositions sometimes take the accusative case, and sometimes take the dative case.

So here, where “in die Schule” is referring to going to school, the accusative is used. The cool thing about this is that, since the accusative indicates motion, the verb “ gehen ” (to go) is not necessary to include in the sentence!

To learn more about German prepositions and cases, including these tricky two-way prepositions, check  here .

germany trip meme

“Random person: German memes are trash Me: Meme is meme”

If you’ve been paying attention to this article,  clearly  German memes are not trash, or inferior to English memes.

A meme is a meme, after all.

germany trip meme

Translation: “When you get hungry at night but you grab the chili pepper instead of the carrot by accident”

Here you can see the German equivalent of “accidentally” or “by accident,”  aus Versehen .

I don’t know how much I relate to this meme, but it is funny in its own way.

germany trip meme

Translation: “When your parents have to sign a bad grade of yours”

A Spongebob meme? You’ve already caught my attention.

germany trip meme

“me the whole day having eaten nothing

My stomach:”

Here you can see that the German word for “nothing,”  nichts , is written as  nix . This is a popular abbreviation that you may see in other memes or even in a text conversation!

germany trip meme

Translation: “No, left hand! Stop photographing me!”

This poor young woman was just trying to pretend that someone else was taking her picture, but her angle wasn’t quite right.

If only she had moved the camera a little to the other side…

germany trip meme

Translation: “when you change the date of the homework so the teacher doesn’t notice that you did it so late.”

This is a classic trick. I mean, who can’t relate?  This  is how memes unite people across countries and languages.

Here the German meme prefers the general subject  man , but in English, “you” sounds better.

One can also see German’s tendency to put the verb at the end of the clause: because  wenn  comes at the beginning, the verb  ändert  comes after  Hausaufgaben .

germany trip meme

As you can see in this German meme, this popular Kermit meme format from a couple years ago also comes in German.

Good Kermit, who “doesn’t want a hangover”, struggles with Evil Kermit, who insists on “just ‘one’ beer.” We all know how that night ends!

Because  Kater , literally “cat” but also used for “hangover”, is a masculine noun and in the accusative case, we add  -en  to  kein .

germany trip meme

Do you find German articles tricky? Well, you’re not alone – the people who make German memes think so too!

The three articles,  der ,  die , and  das , are represented in the picture by fluffy birds. They respond to “ich,” who says that German is easy.

They say  lass es uns vermasseln , or basically, “let’s mess things up.”

If German articles are giving you a headache, check out  this page  to get things straight!

12.  Die oder Das Nutella?

germany trip meme

Oh, this one is super juicy, speaking of articles…

This meme presents  das Nutella  and  die Nutella  in a staring match.

If you thought articles couldn’t be more complicated, think again – sometimes, German speakers themselves don’t know what the right article for a noun is!

According to the  Duden website , the gender of many brand or product names is not fixed.

Some people choose the feminine form, because Nutella ends in  ella , a feminine ending in the original Italian. Others choose the neuter, since it is often used for foreign words.

What a mess!

So, if you choose to speak of Nutella in German, do so at your own risk. You may encounter some strong opinions!

13.  Deutsche Ordnung

germany trip meme

“Pool: opens at 9

Germans at 5:30: Come Brigitte, the choice of seats is not very big”

Germans often get a reputation for loving  Ordnung , or order. People say they always come on time and have a gift for detail. This meme pokes a bit of fun at that, showing someone leaving at 5:30 am to get to a pool that opens at 9.

germany trip meme

“Slow internet:

The same internet when an ad comes:”

Internet  in German is a neuter noun. Because it comes in the nominative case in both of these two examples, an -es is added to both  langsam  (slow) and  selb  (same).

germany trip meme

Translation: “I came, I saw and I did not govern, because the market already had done it and I saw that it was good.”

The first part of this meme plays on the German equivalent of  veni vidi vici . In English, we say “I came, I saw, I conquered,” while in German it’s “ ich kam, ich sah, ich siegte .”

The man in this picture is Christian Lindner, the Chairman of the Free Democratic Party ( Freie Demokratische Partei , or FDP). He is known for his opposition to tax increases and government spending. The meme here satirizes his free-market views.

germany trip meme

Translation: “Germans making their own firecrackers today”

For the New Year, or  Silvester  in German, local governments in Germany may limit the number of fireworks a person can buy. For this reason, people may make their own, as shown in this picture.

germany trip meme

“Teacher: just write it down from the board

My teacher’s handwriting:”

Have you ever had a teacher whose handwriting was totally illegible? This person certainly has.

The person whose name is in the picture, Olaf Scholz, is the current Prime Minister of Germany. He took over from Angela Merkel in December 2021.

germany trip meme

“Me: Criticism is super, keep it coming!

Also me when someone criticizes me:”

A lot of us can probably relate to the fact that it’s easier to  say  we take criticism well than to  actually  take criticism well.

germany trip meme

Translation: “Serial killers, horror movie monster, people who have a picture of themselves as their background”

Personally, I find this meme hilarious. What  does  it mean to have a picture of yourself as your background? I guess that’s what self-love is.

germany trip meme

The person in this photo is Ronald Pofalla, a German politician from the center-right Christian Democratic Union party.

In 2003, he was criticized for his connections to the US National Security Agency, which had been spying on German citizens. During the investigation, he “declared the discussion as over,” which the meme here is parodying.

1. Deutsche Memes  (German Memes)

This Facebook page and Instagram account is seemingly no longer updated, but they are treasure troves of German memes. Run by the user Unhöflich (rude), these memes take images from pop culture and beyond and relate them to everyday experiences. The results are hilarious!

Example meme from this resource:

german celebrity meme from deutsche memes

Taken from  Deutsche Memes’ Instagram account, the above meme depicts Lindsay Lohan distraught on the phone. In the late 2010s, Lindsay Lohan was known for her public breakdowns that effectively destroyed her once successful acting and singing career.

The German writing overhead says,  “Wenn deine Eltern dich zwingen, deine eigenen Arzttermine und ‘Erwachsenen-Anrufe’ zu machen” (When your parents force you to make your own doctor’s appointments and “adult calls”).

I would argue Pinterest is your best bet for finding German memes, since it’s a huge collection of categorized memes that you can search for by keyword. I searched for “German memes” and dozens of options came up, including the linked example below.

german meme on pinterest featuring a frog

One funny example includes a frog lying on its back looking cozy, using lily pads and surrounding foliage like a lounge chair. The meme says,  “Mir reicht, wenn ich weiß, dass ich könnte, wenn ich wollte,” which translates to “It’s enough for me when I know that I could if I wanted to.”

Another translation for Mir reicht (es) is “I’ve had enough,” which still works well in the statement, but it’s important to hone in on the context to not only make the statement funnier, but to understand it better. This is a wonderful example of the German subjunctive mood , focusing on the past tense.

3. r/ ich_iel on Reddit

r/ ich_iel is a subreddit that posts many memes in German. In fact, it’s the German version of the r/me_irl subreddit . As with all subreddits on Reddit, you can sort the posts by “Hot” (posts that are getting lots of interactions), “New” (the newest posts) or “Top” (posts that have the most upvotes).

The memes are posted by the subreddit’s moderators and also by other subreddit members. That means that there is a constant stream of memes being added pretty much daily. It also means that you can create and post your own memes if you’d like.

german meme from r/ich_iel on reddit

The above meme is meant to be read from the top down. In the first section, there is a traffic sign and a sentence describing what this sign is supposed to mean: “Immer diese komischen Schilder am Straßenrand ‘Vorsicht Kinder!'”  (Always these funny signs on the roadside saying “Caution, children!”)

The next image shows a vespa and says,  “Als ob ich vor denen Angst habe!”  (As if I’m afraid of them!) This meme is presumably a commentary on vespa riders and how they supposedly don’t follow traffic rules in Germany.

A Facebook group serves as a solid way to see an ongoing collection of posts, and this one focuses on students and younger people in the Schwäbisch town in Germany. Keep in mind that many of them are a little vulgar.

Schwäbisch is also considered a dialect of High German , so the memes might be a little tricky to decipher, but they provide a nice look into a whole different way to speak German.

german dog meme from memes uff schwäbisch

Dogs make memes more interesting, so one meme stands out on this site , which everyone can relate to. It shows a dog looking as if he’s sitting and using a computer.

The dog says, “Windows 10? I benutz emmer no XP,” which has a rough translation to “Windows 10? I’m still using XP.” In terms of cultural significance, the meme shows that Germans are rather tech and business oriented, bashing companies like Microsoft and Apple.

Another unlimited meme searcher, the German Google Image Search, brings up plenty of memes based on categories if you click on the titles at the top of your search. Just a quick search revealed that they have categories for Spongebob, Merkel and other funny memes.

spongebob german meme from google images

Some statements don’t sound too funny until you put them on SpongeBob’s face (or Spongebob Schwammkopf , as he’s known in the German-speaking world). In this meme from Google Images , we see Spongebob in bed dramatically clutching his foghorn alarm, utter anguish in his eyes. The captions reads: “Dieser Moment, wenn dein Wecker klingelt, während du einen schönen Traum hattest.” (The moment when your alarm goes off while you were having a nice dream.) Some quotidian struggles are clearly universal, it seems.

Google Images works well for beginners and intermediate learners, seeing as how the caption in this meme gives a good example of how verbs behave in sentences. Here we see how a word like während can be used as a subordinating conjunction, which means it pushes the verb hattest to the end of the clause.

6. Memes auf Deutsch  (Memes in German)

This Facebook page seems to be active recently, so here’s hoping that new memes are added soon! In case they aren’t, this page is still a pretty big archive of memes in German.

Run by administrator Sei Peruanisch  (Be Peruvian), these memes draw on pop culture icons such as Spongebob SquarePants, the Simpsons and Mr. Bean. They also have an international flavor, sometimes commenting on Peruvian and other cultures.

german baby meme from memes auf deutsch

The above meme shows a baby with her eyes closed and her hands in the air. The German reads,  “Wenn du betrunken im Club bist und dein Song kommt”  (When you’re drunk in the club and your song comes on).

While this meme is hilarious in German, its content also mirrors memes in other languages such as English. In fact, that’s the great thing about learning with German memes: sometimes you may already know their structure or what the words are supposed to say. This makes understanding them easier!

Since memes are a huge part of German pop culture, you can understand them better by consuming other authentic German media too, like  TV shows (especially comedies), German music and even the news (political cartoons can be a great place to start).

FluentU takes authentic videos—like music videos, movie trailers, news and inspiring talks—and turns them into personalized language learning lessons.

You bet they can. Memes provide a quick and hilarious way to brush up on quick phrases , jokes and vocabulary. Many of them use images referring to recent or past events, offering a unique look into what Germans are talking about right now.

Some memes are like brain busters too, causing you to really work your mind. For example, a pun requires you to translate the initial joke, but also think about the other German word the phrase is referring to.

As you can see, some German memes are easy to translate and understand the jokes, but others use Internet slang , jargon or even varying dialects, forcing you to search around and learn what they actually mean. You may even have no problem with the translation, yet the humor doesn’t translate.

Regardless, the hunt is part of the fun, so enjoy brushing up on your German humor skills with some of these silly German memes.

  • Boppard, Germany: a day trip from Kaiserslautern

by Ildi · February 3, 2023

Boppard Germany Cover

Boppard is a town in the north of the Rhineland-Palatinate state in Germany. The small town on the Rhine is a surprisingly underrated destination for a day trip. It’s a short drive or train ride from Kaiserslautern . If you are planning your next day trip from the KMC area in Germany, consider checking out Boppard.

Boppard, Germany, is a picturesque little town with a lot of character and a lovely downtown area. It’s a town that takes its history seriously. But it’s not just about its history; it’s also a town with many things to see and do and even some excellent food.

In this blog post, we’ll take a look at Boppard and see why it’s worth visiting. We will share with you some of the things to do in Boppard that you can enjoy during your visit. From enjoying gorgeous natural scenery to checking out the local museums, we will have something for everyone.

Things to see in Boppard

Boppard is a small town in Germany with a lot to offer visitors. Here are some of the things to do in Boppard:

Take a stroll in the old town

The old town area of Boppard lies on the left shore of the Rhine. You can quickly discover historical buildings on foot. As you walk on the cobblestoned streets, you will always get a glimpse of the riverside promenade.

In Boppard, the Rhine flows through its greatest bend, known as the Bopparder Hamm . You can walk along the promenade from the castle to the Bopparded Hamm and have a drink or bite in one of the many restaurants or bars.

Boppard, Germany riverfront

Take a boat tour on the Rhine River

Boppard lies at the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Rhine Valley and is a great starting point for a river cruise. You can take a boat tour and see the picturesque vineyards and castles in the Rhine Valley. The ticket office for the ferries is on the promenade. Address: Rheinallee 56154 Boppard

You can purchase your tickets there, and you are have to be at the landing-stage 15 minutes before departure. They offer several different tours, e.g., the nostalgia route with the highlights between Rüdesheim and Koblenz, or the Loreley tour to the spot where – according to the legend – a beautiful maiden threw herself into the river in despair over her lover and was transformed into a siren who lured fishermen to destruction.

Boppard, Germany, cruise

Take the Boppard Chairlift

The Sesselbahn in Boppard offers a scenic ride over the city. You’ll get a spectacular view of the Rhine Valley and the surrounding area. From Boppard-Mühltal, the chairlift takes you to the summit.

The view down the valley from the lift stretches south to Boppard, “the pearl of the Rhine.” You have a view of vineyards and forests, cliffs, and old oak trees.

The cable car runs daily from the end of March to the end of October.

Tip: When I visited in 2022, they didn’t take credit cards, so bring cash.

Vierseenblick

The destination of the chairlift is the best-known lookout point, the Vierseenblick (“Four-Lake-View”). From the vantage point of the observation platform, the slopes and the Rhine loop create an optical impression that the Rhine is made up of four separate lakes,  vier seen.

Boppard is surrounded by beautiful nature, so why not take a walk and explore?

If you forgot to bring cash for the chairlift, walking up to Vierseenblick is enough hiking for a day. I have done this hike with two young children, and it was doable even without fancy hiking gear. The Vierseenblick station is the starting point for further beautiful walks and hikes.

Vierseenblick

Visit the Boppard wine cellars

Boppard is known for its wine-making, and you can visit the city’s many wine cellars and taste some of the local wines. Bopparder Hamm – the largest loop of the Rhine – gives its name to a famous wine-growing district. The slopes on the left bank of the Rhine form the largest area under vines in the Middle Rhine Valley. Mainly Riesling, Rivaner, and Pinot Noir are grown there.

Check out the Boppard Museum

Located in the former castle, the Boppard Museum is a great place to learn about the city’s history and the region. It features a wide range of artifacts, including the Thonet bentwood chair exhibition. Michael Thonet was born in Boppard and manufactured his famous furniture here, which is featured in an exciting exhibition today. Strange, but true.

Boppard Museum

Visit a festival

Several festivals take place in Boppard each year, such as the Boppard Wine Festival in September, the Boppard Festival of Jazz and Blues, and the Mittelrhein Musik Festival.

Things to eat in Boppard, Germany

The historic old town is home to various restaurants offering a range of traditional German and international cuisine. The German restaurants serve regional specialties such as riesling, schweinshaxe, and schnitzel, while the international restaurants offer dishes from all over the world.

Romerburg Restaurant in Boppard is a fine-dining restaurant that offers a cozy atmosphere. The menu includes classic German dishes like sauerbraten, schnitzel, and rouladen and international cuisine like pasta, steak, and seafood. The restaurant also has a great selection of wines and beer, making it ideal for a romantic evening or special occasion.

For a more casual outing, check out the popular Cafe zeitgeist. It is an inviting cafe that serves delicious freshly-brewed coffee and a variety of snacks. The atmosphere is modern and chic. Cafe Zeitgeist is the perfect place to enjoy a hot cup of coffee and some delicious panini while taking in the beautiful views of Boppard.

Things to buy in Boppard

Boppard, Germany, is a great place to shop and find unique items. From antiques to handmade jewelry, there is something for everyone here. You can find traditional German clothing, jewelry, pottery, and unique souvenirs from the area. Food lovers can enjoy fresh produce, artisanal cheeses, and local wines. Boppard is also a great place to pick up some traditional German gifts like cuckoo clocks, wooden figurines, and hand-carved toys.

Useful information for visitors to Boppard

Getting to Bingen from Kaiserslautern

For those who live in Kaiserslautern, the regional train through Bingen is a great option to get to Boppard. This relaxing train ride takes you along the Rhein, a scenic route you can enjoy with your family or friends.

The other option is to take the A61 and A63 to get to Boppard. The drive is less scenic but faster than taking the train .  From the north (Koblenz), stay on the main road B9 through Boppard.

The Boppard tourist office offers a wealth of information on the town and its surroundings, as well as maps and brochures.

5 Things to Pack for Your Trip to Germany

Germany - Berlin - Suitcase and Day Bag packing to leave

I have an entire Germany packing list , that includes what to pack for Germany for every season, but here are some quick picks:

The   Lonely Planet Germany   guidebook for your trip. It can be hard to find big, international guidebooks once you land (or they’ll be way overpriced). Get yours ahead of time, either a hard copy or on a Kindle.

An Unlocked  Cell Phone   so that you can use a German sim card while here to help navigate public transportation and when you’re on the road.

Backup Charging Bank  for your cell phone since you’ll be using it as a camera, GPS system, and general travel genie.

A Camera  since Germany is super photogenic. I use a mix of my  Nikon D810  and my   Samsung8  smartphone these days.

A Great Day Bag   so you can carry what you need with you (like your camera, snacks, water, sunscreen, cash, etc).

My current favorite is the  Pacsafe Citysafe , which is especially great for German cities because it has many anti-theft features designed to deter pickpockets.

It also transitions to a night bag more easily and won’t embarrass you if you go to dinner directly after sightseeing all day.

I also love visiting Dresden! Check out these beautiful  pictures of Dresden  and the best Dresden street art  to inspire your trip. I also have a guide to the best Dresden Instagram spots , best Dresden tours , and what to do in the hip Dresden Neustadt neighborhood.

Don’t Forget About Travel Insurance!

Before you leave for Germany make sure you have a valid  Travel  Insurance Policy  because accidents happen on the road. I pay for  World Nomads,  and I happily recommend them. It’s especially important to get travel insurance if you’ll be hanging enjoying time in big cities where travelers can attract pickpockets.

I have been a paying customer of  World Nomads  for travel insurance for three years, and I happily recommend them.

If you get sick, injured, or have your stuff stolen, you’ll be happy to have the ability to pay for your medical bills or replace what’s stolen or broken.
