The True Story of N.W.A. Playing “Fuck Tha Police” Live in Detroit

By Steve Knopper

Image may contain Human Person EazyE Musical Instrument and Musician

In the summer of 1989 in Detroit, N.W.A. made it through some 30 seconds of "Fuck Tha Police" before apparent gunshots went off in the crowd at Joe Louis Arena. Prior to that, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E and the rest had played their signature anthem exactly one time on stage— at the Celebrity Theatre in Anaheim the previous spring. The group heard the shots and took off, only to run backstage into a line of cops, who threw them to the ground, handcuffed them and hauled them away. It's a dramatic rebellion story that prefigures this era of anti-police-brutality protests, but the way it's told in the group's 2015 biopic Straight Outta Compton isn't exactly true.

"'We're all running together and getting caught and getting thrown'—I guess that's done for Hollywood," says N.W.A.'s DJ Yella, who was on stage at the time. "We didn't get arrested. All that commotion and we ended up getting a ticket, like $100 or something like that."

In the film, Ice Cube gives a stirring speech to introduce the song: "This is N.W.A., we do what the fuck we want to do, we say what the fuck we want to say" and leads the 20,000-some fans in a middle-finger salute before gunshots ring out. In real life, according to people at the show, all it took to start the song was a brief flash of eye contact between Cube and Dre on stage. And those gunshots from the crowd weren’t really gunshots. "All of a sudden you hear bap, bap, bap, bap, bap. Guys are running, and guys are trying to storm the stage. And, of course, our security guys are fighting the guys who had stormed the stage," recalls Atron Gregory, the group's tour manager at the time. "Turns out it was the cops, and they had lit off some cherry bombs to create chaos."

"I'm the person that was literally two feet away from the police when they lit the fireworks, or the firecrackers," says DJ Speed, who performed with the group on stage. "It was a crazy thing."

Because the police responded to “Fuck Tha Police” so quickly and forcefully, the film strongly suggests that, somehow, officers had the authority to tell hip-hop groups what they could and couldn’t say or play on stage. But that’s not quite the case. In fact, the restriction came from N.W.A.’s inner circle. The late Eazy-E’s manager, Jerry Heller, agreed in pre-tour negotiations with Darryll Brooks, the tour’s promoter, that the band would be fined $25,000 if it played the song.

Why? Brooks, Heller and the band’s agent, Jerry Ade, feared the song “was not going to be palatable” to conservative localities. “When you go to the Bible Belt, to the Midwest, they don't allow sexual gyrating postures on stage," Brooks recalls. In his 2006 autobiography Ruthless , the late Heller explained how the police came to enforce the contract: “Insurance carriers required police security as a condition of issuing a policy. No police, no policy. No policy, no concert. So Detroit police threatened to boycott those fuck-the-police motherfuckers, N.W.A.”

Although he wasn’t present in Detroit, Sir Jinx, a producer who also performed with the group, says police had an agenda to intimidate N.W.A.’s mostly young, African-American fans. "They were just being bullies," he says. "It was a show to the audience that they were in control."

And so on August 6, 1989, many of the 20,000 fans in Detroit started chanting “Fuck Tha Police,” so N.W.A. called an audible and played it anyway. Brooks was working in an office somewhere in the arena when he heard the chant, followed by DJ Yella's familiar opening beat drop. Cops were everywhere, Brooks says, because it was a "'rap show'—put that in quotes—so everybody was looking for marijuana." He ran towards the stage, and soon "every police officer in the building starts rushing the stage out of nowhere. It looked like the Battle of the Bulge."

According to Straight Outta Compton, plainclothes police gradually made their way to the side of the stage during the performance, where they looked on menacingly. In real life, Gregory recalls, N.W.A. had its own security guards posted on the sides of the stage, and once the police arrived, the two sides began to tussle. The movie got one key detail right, according to people who were there: When the group heard the bap, bap, bap, they panicked and fled. “For that 15 or 20 minutes, it was white-hot,” Brooks says. “You can imagine guys running offstage and plainclothes guys running from the venue, on the floor, trying to get over the barrier to catch these guys who were saying ‘Fuck Tha Police.’”

In Gregory’s account, N.W.A., after running from the stage, removed their hats and reversed their jackets to hide logos and be more anonymous. They boarded a limousine to the hotel a mile or two away, and everybody else in the group’s entourage walked unassumingly past the police on horseback. MC Ren's recollection is different: "Me and Dre were together, we ran backstage. We ran out the door, and once we looked out, it was like, 'All right,' and we turned around and went back in the building. Everybody was like, 'Back into the dressing room.' The police were in there trying to give citations, some bullshit like that." DJ Yella wound up alone in the street. "We went all different ways. I ran into the parking lot," he says. "I walked back to the hotel." DJ Speed left with the late Eric "Eazy-E" Wright and Eazy's security guard Big Ron.

The cops first wound up backstage, where they tussled with the first rappers they could find—in LL Cool J's dressing room. (Also on the bill that night: De La Soul, Too $hort and Slick Rick.) "So LL's bodyguards are fighting the police!" Gregory recalls. The scene was so stressful that Brooks, the promoter, felt a spike in blood pressure and asked a runner to take him to the emergency room. (He was okay, and returned to the show, which still had two acts left.)

Afterward, Gregory returned to the hotel. He handed N.W.A.'s production manager a briefcase full of cash from the show as well as all the plane tickets back to LA. He called the bus driver to check on the two cases full of guns the group carried on the road. They tried to drive the buses into Canada, "just in case something happened," but police arrived shortly after that.

Gregory called a cab for the airport, ending up at another hotel two blocks away. He contacted Eazy-E via walkie-talkie, who verified everything was okay. Police chatted amiably with the band about the Detroit Pistons and sports. Ice Cube once told an interviewer that, "They corralled us, arrested us all, and all they wanted was damn autographs for their daughters and sons."

Four years ago, when members of the group reunited in Detroit (and played "Fuck Tha Police"), local cops provided a high-speed escort, "like we were the president or something," Yella says. In the Black Lives Matter era, "Fuck Tha Police" has evolved from a too-dangerous-to-be-performed anthem to a timely Spotify hit with 157 million plays. "I've been seeing people on social media playing it and people having their own signs and writing it on buildings," MC Ren says. "It's unfortunate why the song keeps popping up and is as relevant as it is. I don't know why we never played it. We had so many other songs. We could just do this other shit."

Back in 1989, did promoters take the $25,000 “Fuck Tha Police” fine from N.W.A’s cut? “To the best of my knowledge,” Brooks recalls, “yes, we did.”

Here's who performed the first concert at each Detroit sports venue

With kid rock opening little caesars arena, we journey back to the first concerts at detroit's arenas & stadiums.

Mick Jagger and Keith Richards perform "Brown Sugar" at the first Ford Field concert in 2002.

Kid Rock is set to perform the first concerts at Little Caesars Arena when it opens this September.

That got us thinking about the past a little bit. Who performed the first concert at each of the major Detroit sports venues over the years?

Let's take a trip into the time machine and look back. Did you attend any of these concerts? Let us know about your experience in the comments.

(We used TheConcertDatabase.com and the Free Press archives to pull together this info.)

Joe Louis Arena

Rush , "Permanent Waves," Feb. 17, 1980

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

The year after the Joe opened, Rush and opening act Max Webster performed the first two concerts there, with tickets ranging from $9-11 per pop. Rush, a Canadian trio, performed such hits as "Freewill," "Working Man," "Jacob's Ladder" and "Closer to the Heart." Rush and Webster performed Feb. 17 and 19, with the Beach Boys performing the next concert on Feb. 23.

Check out the ticket stub to Rush and Max Webster.

The Rolling Stones and No Doubt , "Licks Tour," Oct. 12, 2002

Quite the duo opened up Ford Field as a concert venue, with the English rock group teaming up with vocalist Gwen Stefani and No Doubt in front of a capacity crowd of 45,000. Tickets were $90 apiece. Acoustically, the stadium held its own," wrote Free Press pop music critic Brian McCollum in 2002. "Extensive sound baffles are ribboned across the mammoth ceiling, helping to dilute the washed-out echo that plagues older domed stadiums like the 1975 model in Pontiac. And while Ford Field wasn't transformed into the Fox Theatre -- sound at the back of the stadium couldn't escape the cavernous effect -- it was a vast improvement on the Silverdome."

Comerica Park

Dave Matthews Band , July 5, 2000

The Detroit Tigers were in the middle of their first season at their new ballpark when Dave Matthews Band hosted the first concert, with special guests Ben Harper and Ozomatli. Tickets were $46.50 apiece and more than 43,000 people attended.  Here's the advertisement . "With a swath of laid-back grooves in front of the Detroit skyline, the Dave Matthews Band christened Comerica Park's concert career Wednesday night in front of 43,822 dancing fans," McCollum wrote in 2000. "Detroit, meanwhile, heralded the arrival of a new entertainment era. And for those of us with an investment in music -- be it emotional or financial -- it came as something of a relief."

Palace of Auburn Hills

Sting , Aug. 13, 1988

The Palace of Auburn Hills hosted a set of concerts as part of its "Grand Opening Celebration," starting with Sting on Aug. 13, 1988. The British pop star performed in front of a capacity crowd of 16,587 people that night. "I've been in these kinds of buildings all over the world, and they all seem the same. But it's nice to be here on the first night," Sting told the Free Press that night in 1988. "There's definitely a special buzz that you can feel."

The Palace later hosted David Lee Roth & Poison on Aug. 14, a WWF event on Aug. 15, Pink Floyd on Aug. 16-17, Crosby, Stills & Nash on Aug. 18 and George Michael on Aug. 29-30.

Check out the "Grand Opening Celebration" ad here .

Tiger Stadium

Rod Stewart , "A Night to Remember," Sept. 25, 1993

Though this venue has hosted concerts before when it was originally Briggs Stadium (more on that later), the first concert at Tiger Stadium was Rod Stewart, with Patty Smyth as the opening act, in early fall 1993. Tickets were $35 a pop and Stewart played hits such as "Maggie May," "Forever Young," "Rhythm of My Heart" and, of course, "The Motown Song." Here's the advertisement .

Pontiac Silverdome

The Who , "The Who Tour 1975," Dec. 6, 1975

Nearly 76,000 people showed up at the brand-new Silverdome for this one, featuring the British rock quartet and the opening act, Toots & the Maytals. Tickets were $8.50 apiece and The Who played many of their biggest hits over the years, such as "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Baba O'Riley," "Behind Blue Eyes" and "Magic Bus." Check out the advertisement here .

Olympia Stadium

Ted Lewis Orchestra , Jan. 23, 1942

Now we're really going back! Olympia Stadium, where the Detroit Red Wings played for more than 40 years before moving to Joe Louis Arena in 1979, hosted jazz musician Ted Lewis and his orchestra in front of about 4,000 fans for its first concert.

Jerry Lee Lewis , May 17, 1961

Remember when the Detroit Pistons played here from 1961-78? Lewis performed back-to-back concerts on May 17-18, 1961, one year after Cobo Arena opened. Though the venue has hosted many high-profile concerts over the years, such as The Doors, Pink Floyd, Prince, The Rolling Stones, Madonna and Bruce Springsteen, the last concert to take place there was in 2009, when Phish stopped by.

Briggs Stadium

"Star Night," July 23, 1954

A few years before this stadium became Tiger Stadium in 1961, Briggs Stadium hosted a "Star Night" featuring Ray Anthony, Mitchell Ayres, Archie Bleyer, Nat King Cole, Perry Como, Jill Corey, Roy Hamilton, Julius La Rosa, Ralph Marterie, Patti Page and Sarah Vaughan. Tickets were $2.50 and $4.50.

Doja Cat review, Ovo Hydro Glasgow: Rapper’s first UK arena tour showcases her charisma – and her growing pains

I t sometimes seems like Doja Cat lives her entire life within the 9:16 box of an Instagram Story. The 28-year-old American rapper and singer is a true internet-era celebrity, a performer who owes her hits (as well as the occasional controversy ) to the whizzy virality of social media. As she walks out at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro arena on Tuesday to kick off her UK stadium tour, I wonder how someone so eminently online will approach a large-scale live experience. From the opening rendition of the pugnacious, Drake-like “ACKNOWLEDGE ME”, which she performs while flanked by two large angel wings made of hair, it’s clear the answer is: with verve.

Doja (real name Amala Dlamini) begins the night wearing a long, blonde wig, an oversized, unbuttoned shirt and lingerie; after a couple of songs, the shirt is gone. It’s at this point too that the energy lifts, as she launches into a propulsive performance of “WYM Freestyle”. Almost every song she goes through tonight is drawn from last year’s album Scarlet , or this April’s expanded re-release, Scarlet 2 CLAUDE. Both were top-to-toe hip-hop records, a pointed departure from the pop-leaning material that preceded it. Lyrically, her concerns were largely unchanged: topics such as sex, fame, the internet, herself.

Throughout the first tracks of the night, Doja moves a little stiffly, her face stony with concentration; when, five songs in, she switches to an older favourite – 2019’s “Tia Tamera”, with its dextrous and catchy barrage of pop-culture references – you can see her start to have a good time.

Scarlet was very much a “proof of concept” when it comes to Doja’s rapping credentials; tracks such as “Get Into It (Yuh)” and the trap hit “Need to Know”, a Nicki Minaj-inspired single from 2021’s Planet Her , let her really flex this on stage. This latter number draws some boisterous rapping-along from the loud but rather static stalls section. It ends with her guitarist stepping out centre stage for a long and squealy solo. (He is dressed in hair-covered trousers from the waist down, giving him the look of Mr Tumnus from The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe , or as if an actor playing Chewbacca needed to go out for a cigarette.)

Halfway through the set, Doja tells the crowd: “I won’t sing Hilary Duff this time, I’m not gonna do that.” It’s a tongue-in-cheek reference to her Parklife set last week, when a cover of Duff’s “Come Clean” drew bafflement from her audience. This is quite comfortably the most that Doja says between songs all night. In her music, though, she’s loquacious – her lyrics might not have the depth or sophistication of some of the genre’s very best, but they’re slick and undeniably infectious.

On the one hand, the production is refreshingly low-maintenance for a 90-minute stadium gig: there are no costume changes and few elaborate group dances. What it does have is enough pyrotechnics to produce a remake of Backdraft , and a complicated set design involving an elevating platform hung from the ceiling, which sort of resembles a U-boat, or a long metallic baguette. Doja climbs onto this platform, harnessed, as she performs “Can’t Wait” and “Agora Hills”, auto-tuning her vocals over a patient trap beat. She never looks completely at ease when she’s dangled some five-to-10 metres above the ground, but she twerks through it anyway. The live band, meanwhile, are arranged on top of what I first assume to be bales of hay; on closer inspection, these too, seem to be made of hair.

A gig of this scale perhaps requires a larger and more diverse repertoire to really draw from. Doja blasts through 24 tracks on the night, but they begin to bleed into each other. “Often” is a lull – sparse and slightly dissonant – and you can sense the energy sap from the room. But the high points are compelling: the snaky melodies of “Attention”; the snappy and dynamic “Rules”.

The climax of the show comes with her biggest hit, “Paint the Town Red”. It’s a big banger, and she obviously knows it: dangling the microphone in the direction of the crowd, she defers the staccatoed, slightly off-kilter scansion of the verses to the word-perfect onlookers. The encore, “Wet Vagina”, struggles to really follow it.

What we’re left with is an imperfect set, but a perfect showcase of Doja’s electric confidence, what younger gig-goers might call her rizz . There were four backing singers on stage throughout the night, but I couldn’t tell you anything about them. All eyes – and all cameras – were trained on Doja Cat. As they should be.

Best MLB stadium tours: Go behind the scenes at these ballparks

“Life is an adventure, it’s not a package tour.”  – German philosopher Eckhart Tolle

If you enjoy going on “package tours” of historic mansions, foreign cities or fascinating museums, why not take a tour at a Major League Baseball stadium? We won’t tell Tolle, but let’s consider such a guided tour our own little “adventure.”

While it varies by venue, such tours typically lead you through the clubhouse, press box, workout facilities, batting cages under the stands, a dugout … and some will even allow you to walk onto the playing field. If the team has its own museum, those are likely to be included. The Atlanta Braves, for instance, include a curated look at their exceptional Monument Garden at Truist Park when you take one of their tours.

When planning a tour of a Major League ballpark, keep several things in mind:

Pro Tip No. 1: For the most behind-the-scenes experiences, go when the team doesn’t have a home game.

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

You will often see notices listing features you won’t be able to see when there is a game that day. So even though you are likely to pay the same whether such access is permitted or denied, you’ll get more for your money when the team is on the road, or has an off-day during a homestand.

Pro Tip No. 2  Hurry to visit an older ballpark. You might not get another chance.

Derrick Sloboda of Fort Wayne, Indiana considers himself quite fortunate that he took a tour at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park before it was demolished. The Giants had already moved closer to downtown at what is now called Oracle Park, and the 49ers were about to move south to Santa Clara, so Candlestick was in its final weeks.

“The guide extended the tour by an hour because so many people were saying ‘good bye,’ (so) we had half hour on the field, which was great,” recalls Sloboda.

Keep in mind that the main purpose of taking a guided tour is to create memories, and once that venue is gone, those memories will be even more special to you.

Pro Tip No. 3: Try to overlook the high prices

Typically the money you pay for the tour goes to a charity or “foundation” operated by the team, or one that’s meaningful to the ownership. The prices can be pretty high (VIP Tours at some parks top $500), but you’ll get to visit parts of the facility that fans rarely get to see.

So rather than focusing on what it costs, think about the charity your purchase is supporting. And appreciate that you and your family are getting to experience the places where your favorite players do their work.

It’s hard to put a price tag on that.

Join us now for our ranking of the five MLB parks with the best tours (OK, I’m cheating by including six!), based partially on the experiences of visitors to my BaseballParks.com site.

1. Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles

While other teams might offer you one or two options of tours, the Dodgers provide 11 ! These range from the standard walking stadium tour ($30, and kids and seniors are $25), to the pregame tour of landmarks within the ballpark ($45), to the "Take the Field Tour" where you can play catch in the outfield ($175, only on non-game days – bring your glove!) all the way to the $500 VIP Tour that includes getting to greet the players as they take batting practice.

Most of these experiences include a tour of the Vin Scully Press Box, which is Holy Ground to me, because it’s where I actually got to meet Vin about a dozen years ago!

While on a trip to visit relatives in California, Dutch citizen Chris Kabout thoroughly enjoyed his visit to Chavez Ravine. “The tour showed you the press boxes, old locker rooms, showcases with trophies, gold gloves, retired jerseys, the dugout and you were allowed to walk on the dirt,” he recalls.

The Netherlands resident added that the tour’s guide kept things lively by asking the group trivia questions about the Dodgers. And considering the team dates back to 1883 as the Brooklyn Grays, there is a lot of trivia to discuss!

2. Citi Field, New York  Mets

As befits Citi Field’s reputation as a fun place to attend a game, tours of the Mets’ home have a decidedly upbeat and enjoyable atmosphere, complete with a sit-down history lesson in the room where post-game press conferences are held.

Like the Dodgers, the Mets offer multiple tour options – with varying prices. The public tour costs $25 ($20 for kids 12 and under) and will take you to the private suites, two of the season-ticket-holder restaurants, the press box and down on the field.

On days with a home night game, the "Grand Slam Tour" is available for $70, and that’s over and above the cost of your game ticket. This also permits early entry into the park to watch batting practice. If you want to get closer to the players around the batting cage, there’s the $250 All-Star Tour.

They also offer private tours, with the cost depends on how many are in your group. For instance, if you put together a group of ten, the cost is $62.50 per person.

3. Wrigley Field, Chicago  Cubs

When Wrigley was being designed 110 years ago, they didn’t make it easy to get from one spot under the stands to another. But that just makes the guided tours of the Friendly Confines all the more interesting.

The charge of $30 is reasonable compared to other parks, and whether it’s a gameday or not, you’ll get to check out the famous bleachers and go down on the field. If the Cubbies aren’t home that day, you’ll also get to go in the visiting clubhouse plus one of the dugouts … and you’ll get up close and personal with the iconic ivy growing on the outfield wall.

4. Yankee Stadium, New York

If you go on a tour here, you won’t be visiting the exact spot where Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig played – or Bernie Williams for that matter – because this version of Yankee Stadium opened in 2009. But you will be able to visit the monuments to Babe and Lou in Monument Park in center field as part of the $35 Classic Tour. It also includes the New York Yankees museum. There’s even a version of the tour that includes lunch at the Hard Rock Café that’s built into the ballpark.

One number you’ll see and hear often during any tour here: 27. That’s the number of World Series titles captured by the Bronx Bombers. They won’t let you forget it!

5 (tie). Busch Stadium, St. Louis Cardinals & Kauffman Stadium, Kansas City Royals

While one is a fairly new facility (Busch Stadium, 2006) and one is kind of not-so-new (Kauffman Stadium, 1973), they have more in common than the state of Missouri. Both the Cards and Royals operate exceptional museums that are worthy of your time, and their tour guides are among the nicest and friendliest in the sport.

The Royals have been operating tours for decades, and they have the process down pat. They offer three versions, and you can’t beat the prices: the Classic Tour costs $15; the All-Star tour is $25 (includes the team Hall of Fame); and the MVP Tour costs $35 (includes the broadcast facilities and the dugout suites). Don’t forget to visit KC’s excellent Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, just six miles west of Kauffman.

Across the state in St. Louis, the Cards offer two tours. The 360 Tour is a quick walk around the park and the dugout, showing you the view from various vantage points. It costs $12. The Classic Tour is $22 and includes a visit to the broadcast booths and admission to the Cardinals museum across the street.

Come to think of it, plan an adventure to Missouri so you can visit both Kauffman and Busch. The “package tours” sure are affordable, and you won’t get in trouble with a German philosopher!
