However, bending downward is a natural movement for dogs and eating or drinking from that position is normal from a physiologic perspective."

What to Look for in an Elevated Dog Bowl

Height and bowl size.

Feeders come in various heights, with the smallest options measuring between 3 to 4 inches and the largest options towering as high as 12 inches or more. Choose the right height based on your pet’s size and any medical issues they may have. Bowl size is another factor to keep in mind since many feeders will come with a bowl. You’ll want to find an option with a slightly larger capacity than what you typically feed your dog each meal so that kibble isn’t spilling out while they eat.

Many feeders have anti-skid rubber pads on the bottom to keep them from moving when your dog eats excitedly. Others are constructed with a more stable base to keep the entire feeder in place. If your dog is very eager at mealtime, look for a solid feeder that can’t easily be tipped over or pushed.

Easy to Clean

Spilled water and food can cause bacteria to build up, so you’ll need to clean your bowls and feeder regularly. Look for dishwasher-safe bowls and feeders that are easy to wipe clean. See if food or water can collect anywhere in the feeder and make sure it’s easy to mop up spills. You can also keep a paper towel in the well under bowls to soak up water spills. If you do this, be sure to change it regularly.

The ideal height of the bowls depends on any medical conditions and your dog’s own size, says Sherman.

“For dogs with megaesophagus who are using elevated feeding, we aim for a little above shoulder height to help create a downward slope from the bowl into their stomach. For dogs with neck or front limb arthritis, usually just below shoulder height is a good benchmark and can help minimize downward bending while not forcing them to reach upwards; aim for a good, neutral neck position,” Sherman says.

But if your dog is otherwise healthy but you (or your dog) prefer elevated bowls, choose a height far enough off the floor to prevent your pup’s front legs from bending, but still below the shoulder. That should allow for normal eating and drinking without repeatedly moving your dog’s limbs, Sherman says.

Whether you’re choosing an elevated feeder for medical reasons or because your dog prefers eating higher, both food and water bowls should be raised, Sherman told The Spruce Pets

Sherman says elevated bowls can help make eating more comfortable if your dog has arthritis or it hurts when they move their neck or front legs. However, if a dog has arthritis in their back legs or is weak when standing, they might be more comfortable eating while lying down and would need a floor-level bowl. Elevated feeding is also critical with megaesophagus, a condition where the food pipe (esophagus) is too big and doesn’t allow food to pass as it should into the stomach.

Some studies also suggest elevated feeding could be a possible risk factor for a life-threatening condition called bloat, or gastric dilatation and volvulus (GDV). Bloat is when a dog’s stomach fills with gas and then twists. “This is because more air tends to be swallowed with the food when dogs eat from a higher position,” explains Sherman. “For large to giant breed dogs or deep-chested dogs (who are at increased risk of GDV), I would use a floor-level bowl unless otherwise indicated.”

When we think about things that could potentially harm our precious pets, dinner time doesn't usually come to mind. Leaving them in a stifling car on a hot summer's day ? Absolutely a big no-no. For larger breeds especially, like German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers, the lower the food and water bowls, the farther they have to reach, which can cause head or neck pain while increasing risk of arthritis. Danielle Bernal , DVM, BVSC, global veterinarian for Wellness Pet Company , explains that an elevated pet feeder can reduce the stress and tenseness in these areas, making feeding time much more enjoyable.

"While options for smaller dogs do exist, larger dog breeds can benefit the most from raised feeders, especially if he or she suffers from neck aches," she says. "If your dog is older or struggles with joint or bone problems, elevates feeders can make it more comfortable to eat and drink...Bringing food up to shoulder-level helps your dog keep from bending the neck as he or she eats."

Dr. Bernal also says elevated dog bowls can help pets swallow more easily, while preventing dust and bacteria from floating into the bowl, to boot. Some research suggests these feeders can increase the risk of bloating in dogs (a condition where the stomach quickly fills with gas and flips over on itself), though the topic is still widely debated. "A raised dog feeder may also help a pet dealing with issues around the esophagus, such as megaesophagus , which can make it difficult for dogs to push food into their bellies," Dr. Bernal says. "Monitoring your pet while he or she eats is important to detect any unusual or changes in behavior. Of course, always consult a veterinarian to discuss these digestive issues before changing your pet's nutrition, feeding habits, or bowls."

Using an elevated dog bowl

We know you want the best for your fur baby (don't we all?), but before you go running to the kitchen to put your dog's food and water dish on the closest elevated surface, pause—Dr. Bernal has some suggestions on placement and product shopping that'll ultimately keep Fido happy and healthy.

First is choosing your feeder—pick one that's sturdy and stable. (Your floors will thank you!) "A sturdier bowl is going to keep food and water in, preventing bacteria or leftovers from getting onto the floor, which can be risky for your pets or other family members walking by," says Dr. Bernal. "Dual bowls for food and water are often sturdier and can help keep your pet’s head level as they are eating and drinking."

Choose something that's going to be the right size for your pet with bowls that are easy to clean, like stainless steel. From there, Dr. Bernal says you can determine the correct position of your feeder by measuring your standing dog from the floor to the top of the shoulders and subtracting 5-6 inches.

"Your dog should be able to eat without lowering the neck or stretching upwards, ensuring your dog remains comfortable while eating, especially if at higher risk for joint paint," she says. "The bowl should be level with the lower part of your pet’s chest to ensure a more natural eating position. But since room in one’s luggage (or packed-to-the-brim RV) is always at a premium, adding your pup’s belongings to the mix can seem a bit daunting. That’s where super portable dog bowls come in. While furry companions can probably last a few days without their favorite blanket or artfully chewed stuffed toy, they’ll always need accessible food and water.

We’re all accustomed to giving up some creature comforts when we travel. But being able to drink at a non-hunched over position is critical for the well-being of many dogs, especially when they’re potentially dehydrated and actively exercising on mountains and trails. That’s why we flipped over the clever design of the Dexas. It is the best collapsible dog bowl, we looked into. It even has extendable legs. When tucked away, the super light unit takes up just 1.5 inches of space. Fully expanded, it offers a 12-ounce capacity bowl and a set of sturdy legs that allow it to stand about 5 inches off the ground. Not only do the legs keep the bowl from slipping and sloshing, while preventing detritus from gathering in the food or water, they let your pup sip without crouching, which helps prevent neck and back stress, and—perhaps most crucially—bloat. Did we mention the silicone materials are easy to hand-wash and are dishwasher-safe? It also comes in a larger, 4-cup capacity.

If you’re spending overnights in the woods, you’ll need to equip your pup with more than just water. So while the comparatively bulky Vittles Vault may be overkill for a trail, you’ll find it an indispensable addition to your camping gear. Comprised of three stackable components, an airtight canister keeps up to 4 quarts of kibble or water fresh, while two one-quart bowls affix to either side, providing an all-in-one storage, drinking and feeding system that can be clipped to the outside of a bag. For such a handy item, the Vittles Vault Gamma Travel-Tainer is also shockingly inexpensive, coming in at under $10.

It generally speaks volumes, when we end up appropriating an item for personal use after testing. To be honest, we were puzzled by the Lixit at first, wondering how a bowl the approximate size and shape of a gas can could possibly be viable for pet travel. And yes, the 3-quart Waterboy makes little sense for a trail. But its usefulness for car or plane travel is unparalleled. When set flat, the innovative design allows just enough water to gather in the reservoir of the bowl, so there’s never any splashing or dripping (even from our own enthusiastic drinker). And amazingly, the entire unit can be flipped upside down, without leaking or spilling a drop. That means, you can leave it with your dog in the car for the entirety of a ride, and allow them to hydrate themselves at will, without fear of flooding the backseat (it’s also great for planes, hotels, and other places where you want to keep splashing to a minimum). The Lixit Waterboy comes equipped with a handle, making it easy to carry upright. And it still won’t spill, even when filled, although carrying it empty significantly increases portability.

Specializing in products for active dogs, it’s no surprise that Ruffwear’s Bivy Bowl proved especially trail-worthy. Made of lightweight, quick-drying waterproof fabric, it weighs only 2.96 ounces empty, yet has a 1.8L capacity—very generous for a vessel that easily collapses into a flat disc. We especially appreciated the wider, weighted base, that allows it to sit firmly on uneven terrain, and thus prevents tipping over and spillage. The only dings are the price—it was one of the most expensive bowls we tested—and the fact that it isn’t dishwasher safe.

Another favorite brand amongst the sporty dog community, Kurgo’s food grade, PVC and BPA-free silicone bowl comes in multiple colors and with a lifetime warranty. That said, it would take an awful lot of roughhousing to do damage to this seemingly impervious bowl, even after multiple passes through the dishwasher (yes, it’s top rack safe). It holds up to 24 ounces, yet collapses to less than 1-inch high, and can be easily tucked into a bag, or clipped by carabiner to the outside. It’s a tiny bit wobbly when folded out and set down, but not so much to significantly affect its ranking on our list.

Able to be adjusted to hold 16 ounces of food or water, or a generous 40 ounces when fully expanded, the FDA-approved, BPA-free plastic Bonza is dishwasher safe, yet simple to hand clean and air dry. That said, it’s a bit too collapsible, as it buckled in our hands when attempting to carry it filled with water, and skidded on the ground when our pup tried to take a sip.

I used the pawfect pets premium elevated feeder, it is untreated wood that absorbs ALL liquid (not sure what they mean saying it’s “waterproof”, I would say it is the opposite). It became moldy and disgusting within a few weeks. I had to throw it away. I would not recommend this product to anyone.
