Day 1: Chinchón (Madrid) Route: 60 kms

The day will start off with a van transfer from the city of Madrid to Chinchón, a beautiful town surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. You will spend the first night in Chinchón. Upon arrival in Chinchón, we will prepare the bicycle and custom bike route according to the level of the cyclist and we will set off to see Aranjuez and Colmenar de Oreja with a visit to a winery included. We’ll take a break and have lunch during the ride, which is included. Once we return to Chinchón you will enjoy a free afternoon in town and spend the night at the reformed Augustinian monastery hotel known as the Parador de Chinchón. For dinner, you can try several of the well-known restaurants in the town.

Day 2: Alcalá de Henares Route: 108 kms +1200 mts

This rural route is surrounded by vineyards, small charming villages, numerous orchards, and historical monuments. It is possible to shorten the route if you want to avoid climbs since we will be constantly going up and down the plateau from the Tajuña and Tajo Rivers until we end up in Alcala de Henares, a UNESCO World Heritage City and birthplace of Miguel Cervantes Saavedra. At the end of the day you can rest your legs at the Parador de Alcalá de Henares and visit the city’s cultural attractions and shops. https://www.turismoalcala.es/

Day 3: Rascafría (Madrid) Route: 124 kms +1800 mts

Today we leave the plain of Alcala de Henares and head towards the mountains. In Torrelaguna, a beautiful town with a Renaissance church, we began to climb towards the northern mountains of Madrid, although we won’t ascend any mountain pass. The landscape changes completely. We abandon the cereal fields and start to see the pine forests of the mountains. We cross the Atazar Reservoir, the great water reserve of Madrid, and arrive at Buitrago. In Buitrago we recommend stopping for lunch, visiting the Pablo Picasso museum and checking out its medieval wall. We continue through the Lozoya River Valley to Rascafría, Madrid’s perfect example of rural tourism, as it is in the Guadarrama National Park. Once we arrive you can take a short walk to see the Paular Monastery.

Day 4: San Lorenzo del Escorial 91 kms +1803mts (option 85km 1300 mts)

Today begins with a mountain climb known as the Morcuera. We will ride through the oak forest and once we reach the summit you will have incredible views surrounded by mountains and the Lozoya Valley. The descent will take us through the towns of Miraflores and Soto el Real, and to the medieval castle of Manzanares el Real. From there, we slowly climb to the town of Navacerrada, where we can continue towards the Escorial or there is an option to climb the Navacerrada mountain pass or even the famous “Bola del Mundo”. After Navacerrada, we will descend to Guadarrama, a town that gives its name to the mountains and the National Park. In San Lorenzo del Escorial, we can see the world-renowned monastery, considered a wonder of the world. Built in 1560 by Felipe II in just 20 years. https://www.sanlorenzoturismo.es/

Day 5: Toledo Route 85 km +1000mts

Today we ride through the western mountains of Madrid, passing through wine towns such as Cebreros or San Martín de Valdeiglesias. The route continues between forests and vineyards descending to Aldea del Fresno, where we can eat and then take a van transfer to Toledo. In Toledo you will have time to see the city and relax with views of the city from the Parador de Toledo.

Day 6: Departure

After breakfast, we arrange a private transfer to Madrid or to the airport. Hotel is not included. The final day of the tour gives you the chance to discover Madrid on your own, either on foot or by bike. There’s so much to do that it almost seems unfair to list all the possibilities, but favorites of past participants – and of most visitors to Madrid! – include the Big Three museums (the Prado, the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Reina Sofía), the beauty of the Retiro Park or the wide open spaces of the Casa de Campo Park (perfect for those who’d like a spin on a mountain bike!) In the evening, you’re free to go on your own tapas tour, take in a flamenco show or see something cultural at the Teatro Real or the Teatro Nacional (we’ll be happy to make the reservations for you).

Parador de Chinchón

hotel parador chinchon

Located in a former Augustinian monastery . It offers large windows, beautiful common areas and guest rooms decorated with exquisite taste.

The lovely  courtyard  filled with loquat trees and well-kept  gardens will allow you to enjoy this beautiful and peaceful location. Highlights include  the Plaza Mayor (Main Square) , with more than 230 wooden balconies on the surrounding houses. We recommend viewing it at night: the illumination makes it a distinctive sight.  ncestral homes, gorgeous courtyards and galleries supported by lovely columns make Chinchón a uniquely beautiful town.

Parador Alcala de Henares

Parador Alcala Henares

In the  birthplace of Cervantes , where every nook and cranny oozes art and culture, stands the Parador de Alcalá, a 17th-century monastery school and student lodgings located in the former San Jerónimo College.

However, do not let so much history overwhelm you, because the hotel offers the perfect combination of  tradition and avant-garde . The interior décor is of a modern design: tasteful, minimalist and extremely elegant. The services are without par: in addition to the standard offerings at Paradores, there is a spa, swiming pool and business center. The Parador’s location in this World Heritage City is one of its main advantages.

Madrid: Old Town eBike Express Tour

The time of the tour can be curated to your group if you choose a private tour, but the best time is in the morning! You’ll miss the crowds and the heat of midday, and have plenty of time afterwards to continue exploring. The evening tours of Madrid, however, are a whole new way to experience the city!

Monday – Friday: 7am – 8pm Saturday – Sunday: 8am – 8pm

Best time to go

The best time to go on a Madrid bike tour is in spring and summer! The weather is beautiful, the sun always shining. You’ll want to spend all your time outdoors! You may get rained out in winter, but if the weather looks like it’ll hold, it’s a great option no matter the season.

What is ‘ride bikes’ in Spanish?

Spanish is a difficult language, with different genders for objects, and often, a lot of different ways to say one thing! But it’s helpful to know a few words, to help you communicate, and endear you to the locals! Particularly because many locals know very little English .

If you want to say ‘ride a bike’ in Spanish (and after all, why not?) you can say andar en bicicleta! You can also shorten the word to its more casual use, and say andar en bici.

Best Madrid bicycle tours

Choose between a daytime or nighttime tour of Madrid’s top attractions on a peddle-bike, or a half-day bike tour on an electric bicycle!

Will I need to wear a helmet?

Helmets are provided for all free of charge, but are only mandatory for those under 16 years of age.

What is the best day to book my tour?

What kind of bikes do you have?

We use comfortable, 9 gear city bikes. We also have pedal-assist e-bikes available for an additional €10. You can upgrade when you arrive for your tour!

Can I reschedule in the event of bad weather?

We intend on operating rain or shine, and we advise all guests to dress appropriately for the weather.

Is water included or can I purchase some before the tour?

Is Madrid a bike-friendly city?

bike around madrid tour

Biking has seen a surge in popularity in Madrid, thanks to the city’s efforts to become more bike-friendly.

The traffic in Madrid´s city center has been reducing in the last few years and there is a limit for cars not to drive faster than 30 kilometers per hour. If we add to this the fact that dedicated bike lanes are being built, Madrid is on the right way to creating a safe and enjoyable environment for cyclists.

Bike tour around El Retiro Park

The flat terrain of the city also makes it accessible for riders of all fitness levels, making biking an attractive option for sightseeing.

However, if you are thinking about bike rental in Madrid, you need to know that getting around the city by bike can be stressful. So if you are visiting Madrid for the first time guided tours are a great option to consider, counting with experienced guides that will take you along safe and scenic routes.

Bike rentals in Madrid have become an increasingly popular and enjoyable way to explore the Spanish capital.

However, before you embark on your two-wheeled adventure, it is crucial to familiarize yourself with the local biking rules to ensure a safe and pleasant ride. These essential tips will help you navigate Madrid’s roads with confidence:

  • Inspect the Bike : Before setting off, check the bike’s condition thoroughly. Ensure the wheels, brakes, lights, seat, and bell are in proper working order.
  • Stay on the Road : Bicycles should stick to the road, preferably using the right lane and avoiding the bus lane.
  • Avoid Sidewalks : It is essential to remember that biking on sidewalks and pedestrian areas is strictly prohibited.
  • Be Visible: Increase your visibility to other drivers by wearing reflective gear and riding in the center of the lane.

  • Signal Clearly: Signaling your maneuvers and turns in advance is crucial. Use your left arm to indicate a left turn, your right arm for a right turn, and hold your right arm down at your side to indicate stopping.
  • Obey Traffic Signs: Follow all traffic signs and lights to ensure a smooth and safe journey.
  • Safety for Kids: Children under 16 years old must wear a helmet for their safety.
  • Get Insured: For added peace of mind, consider booking travel insurance with comprehensive coverage.

By following these safety tips, you will be well-prepared to enjoy a fantastic biking experience in Madrid. So visit one of the best bike rentals in Madrid, hop on your bike, and make unforgettable memories on two wheels!

Yes, Madrid is generally safe for solo cyclists. Just ensure you follow traffic rules and stay alert while riding. However, you can also consider the option of taking a guided tour.

It depends. In some of the bike rentals in Madrid it is possible to bring your own bike when you hire a guided tour, but it is advisable to check in advance. Keep in mind that, in general, this will not mean a reduction in the price of the guided tour.

Yes, most bike rentals in Madrid offer child seats and kids’ bikes, making it a family-friendly activity.

The best ways to get around in Madrid

Jun 18, 2023 • 6 min read

bike around madrid tour

Commuter-friendly Madrid has an extensive and reliable transportation network © santypan / Getty Images

It doesn't take long for visitors to discover that there are few cities as easy to get around as  Madrid .

A public transportation infrastructure that includes an efficient and reliable subway system, an organized bus network and late-night buses, long-distance high-speed trains connecting to outlying Spanish towns , and even electric bikes with charging docks, all make Madrid a highly commuter-friendly capital.

Additionally, travelers with reduced mobility will be happy to find Madrid’s bus and subway vehicles and stations specially designed for universally accessible travel , one hallmark that makes the Spanish capital stand out as a world-class tourist destination.

Here's what you need to know to make the most out of Madrid's public transportation network.

Busy traffic on the streets of Madrid at dusk

Get around on Madrid's excellent Metro system

The Madrid Metro is an iconic and inextricable part of city life. In 2018 the Spanish monarch King Felipe declared, “Madrileños should be proud of their transport network,” when he surprised commuters by joining them on the centennial anniversary of the Metro to mark a century after his grandfather King Alfonso XII inaugurated the underground railway system in 1919.

Arguably one of the best and biggest European subways, the Madrid Metro consists of 12 metro lines, 3 tram lines and over 300 stations that neatly link up the city. Open from 6am to 1:30am, Metro trains pass by every 2 minutes during the busiest times of the day, and every 15 minutes after midnight. For travelers flying into Madrid, the Adolfo-Suárez Madrid Barajas Airport connects directly to the busy Nuevos Ministerios central hub, from where you can easily get around Madrid.

Catch  fast suburban trains out of Madrid

Day-trippers and city breakers, the Cercanias Renfe is your portal to some of the most picturesque villages on the outskirts of Madrid. These fast suburban trains accessible via the Atocha Metro station (Line 1) rapidly transport you to quaint towns, World Heritage sites such as San Lorenzo de El Escorial and Alcalá de Henares, and even premiere ski and hiking destinations such as Cercedilla at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains.

Counting nine lines threading through the Madrid region, the Cercanias trains run every day from between 5am and 6am up to midnight. While your metro ticket gives you access to some Cercanias stations that are part of the Metro network, you will still need to purchase separate tickets, the Bonotren , to travel to the long-distance destinations.

A sightseeing tour or riding the city bus is a scenic way to see Madrid

While getting around Madrid via bus or autobús  may not be as fast as taking the Metro, it is certainly the scenic option. Given that the center of Madrid has a lot of interesting sights with its architectural landmarks, intricately carved fountains and expansive green spaces , taking the bus is an excellent, cost-effective way to sightsee if you’re not pressed for time.

EMT Madrid has over 200 bus lines in the city

EMT Madrid is the public bus service that runs from 6am to 11:30pm, with over 200 bus lines. A recent push by the local government to have more environmentally friendly vehicles has led to three zero-carbon-emission buses that are free to use (001 Atocha Renfe-Moncloa, 002 Puerta de Toledo-Argüelles, and C03 Puerta de Toledo-Argüelles). For night owls enjoying Madrid’s world-famous nightlife , there are 27 aptly named “Búhos” or “owl” night buses, marked with an N, that are accessible from Plaza de Cibeles after 11:30pm.

Interurban buses are good for regional transport

Also known as Madrid’s Green Buses, these are privately owned and managed by different transport companies. These intercity buses are a comfortable and reliable option that connect you to different municipalities in the region. You can purchase single tickets directly from the driver or vouchers for ten trips from the bus station kiosks.

Go eco on an electric bicycle

BiciMAD is a relatively new transport service that provides 7500 electric bikes distributed over 611 charging and docking stations strategically placed around Madrid. This is an eco-friendly and convenient way to explore the city, not to mention a great way to keep fit. Madrid has lots of bike-friendly routes all over the city. Use the BiciMad app to find bicycle docks and stations and pay the tariff, which starts at €2/hr.

Elevator access to the entrance of the Lavapies subway station of the Madrid Metro

Accessible transportation is improving in Madrid

In recent years, Madrid’s trains and stations have been significantly upgraded to become more accessible for people with disabilities. With the end goal of giving full autonomy to disabled passengers so everyone can enjoy equal access to public transport, the Metro has installed universal accessibility features in all its stations, with over half of all stations fully accessible with lifts and ramps for wheelchair access. Among several other accessibility measures, step edges are reinforced, and elevator signs and handrails have Braille markings.

All EMT buses have features specially designed for universal access, including low floors, Braille-embossed stop buttons, reserved spaces for baby carriages and reduced mobility passengers, plus tilts and ramps for wheelchair users.

One useful resource for travelers with disabilities is the comprehensive Accessible Tourism Guide developed by the Madrid Tourist Board, working jointly with PREDIF (the Spanish Representative Platform for the Physically Disabled).

For further information on traveling with a disability, download Lonely Planet's free accessible travel resource .

Join the locals on a car-sharing website

Car-sharing services are also a popular mode of transport if you want to visit Madrid's regional towns or other nearby Spanish cities. This is a good way to be more economical with longer distance destinations, not to mention meet and practice your Spanish with locals. The most popular service, BlaBla Car , lets you book car-share rides to several points around the Madrid region and all over the country . If you’re driving solo and wouldn’t mind some company (and sharing the gas bill), you can also publish your own rides and indicate your intended destination on the BlaBla Car website.

A person's hand holding the tourist travel pass of Madrid at an underground metro station

Which public transport ticket should I buy in Madrid?

For visitors, the most practical and cost-effective option for multi-modal travel is to purchase the Tourist Travel Pass, a contactless card that you can get at any Metro station. This allows you to hop on all types of public transport around Madrid, which includes the Metro, bus lines, light rail and Renfe suburban trains.

Bus tickets can be loaded onto the Tarjeta Multi (commonly called Multi card) available at any Metro station or on the Tourist Travel Pass. You can also pay for single bus trips with cash or contactless credit cards. If you’re paying with cash, however, better to have small bills or exact change to hand — or you’ll be met with bewildered stares from bus drivers who will tell you they can’t change your €20 bill!

Don’t throw these smartcards away once you’ve used up the rides — they are transferable and valid up to 10 years, and you can simply top them up in any Metro station on your next visit to Madrid.
