Recent tour reviews

A lot of (for me) new and improvised synth music and some old standards (like cantaloupe, head hunter) with a great playing band.

Big problem was that the sound was too loud at least in the front blocks (I was in B) of the Philharmonie, and at least in some songs not well mixed (drums too loud, bass a bit too intense). On one occasion Herbies was climating a synthesizer solo to a peak, which would be on other occassions a suspense peak, but here it was hurting due to the sound settings.

It was a great experience to see the band playing, and it could have been a great listening experience, too. It's sad that the audio settings were not elaborated enough.

All of them were AMAZING musicians but the best part was the end; 10 minutes of funky fun!

The rest was too jazz hypnotic.

Maybe for this tour you would need some "magic pens" smoke to connect more.

Amazing opportunity to attend a performance of this genius of jazz and more than jazz. Herbie made a great performance full of good vibes, playing his most important creations in this wrapping atmosphere at the Barbican center.

Herbie Hancock @ Walt Disney Concert Hall [2/27/22]

herbie hancock tour 2022

Jazz first confronted me in the halls of Welsh Valley Middle School, my alma mater (which, fascinatingly, boasts a California-style open campus, despite being in Pennsylvania, where seasons occur).

I wish I could say that my introduction to the music was fated, but, if I’m being honest with you, I had a crush on the jazz band’s bassist and thought learning about jazz would impress them. As it turns out, that method was ineffective, but I did gain an appreciation for the genre and found (at long last) musical common ground with my parents.

Yet, I had never experienced jazz the way I did Sunday, seeing Herbie Hancock at the Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Following a chaotic trip circumnavigating the strange network of semi-underground streets surrounding Grand Avenue in Downtown LA, we arrived at the imposing structure designed by Frank Gehry, made up of massive curved stainless steel panels reminiscent of sails. The box office line stretched around the block, full of people dressed to the nines and abuzz with expectation to see the jazz legend.

Even after taking our seats, 2 of 2,265 in the warm, Douglas-fir lined interior making up the concert hall, we could feel the exhilaration from Hancock’s fans from the six year old I stood behind in line to the elderly couple a few places behind me. The latter had been following Hancock’s work for the last six decades, since Herbie joined Miles Davis’ band in 1963, when he was only 23.

Throughout his career, Hancock has been transcending musical boundaries and he did not stop the push Sunday night. Seamlessly navigating between the Fazioli grand piano, a Korg electric keyboard, and a keytar, Herbie played a mix of his classics and new pieces, juxtaposing jazz with elements of funk, pop, and rock. Seeing Herbie live made it clear why he has been a fixture in music for so many decades—beyond playing with expertise and fluency, he balances a sense of fun and mischievousness that makes you feel like you’re in on the joke; breaking a smile before poking fun at the audience or his band member, kicking out his leg while sitting at the piano, constantly reveling in performing.

Hancock was surrounded by his outstanding touring band—featuring Lionel Loueke (guitar), James Genus (bass), Elena Pinderhughes (flute, vocals), Trevor Lawrence Jr. (drums) and Terrace Martin (saxophone, clarinet, keyboard, vocoder).

When introducing Loueke, Hancock commented on his ability to make “a guitar sound like anything else” — a claim Loueke soon proved true, evoking a percussion section consisting of his guitar, mouth clicking, and generous use of a synthesizer pedal. Loueke hails from Benin, he was able to showcase some of his West African-influenced solo work on the song Phoelnix , providing for a diverse and interesting experience.

Genus on bass was also terrific, playing solos throughout with a compelling contribution to Actual Proof, from the Headhunters, one of Hancock’s earlier bands. Trevor Lawrence Jr. on drums played his part perfectly, supporting and complementing the rest of the band.

Particularly interesting were the last two members of Hancock’s band, Elena Pinderhughes and Terrance Martin. Pinderhughes, an incredible flautist who came out with her first album, Catch 22, at age 11 (yep, 11, the same age where I decided to learn about jazz for love), was a privilege to watch. Her agile flute playing sang above and cut through the rest of the band, and her silky, honeyed vocals on “R.I.P.” made for one of the best songs of the night.

Herbie is known for constantly evolving and reaching out to a younger generation of musicians; in a 2016 interview with KPCC, he remarked that “one of the great simulations, for me, is hanging out with young people and paying attention to what they’re doing… we all have something to bring to the table no matter what our age.” His collaboration with Pinderhughes makes it clear that those interactions have paid off.

Martin, multi-instrumentalist and producer on a number of prominent albums, including Damn and To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar was equally a delight. Surrounded by at least five instruments (arguably more, if you include the water bottle that on Hancock’s prompt he made sing) brought a freshness to Hancock’s discography, and his mastery on vocoder was clear.

The crowd made it clear that they were ready for community after months of lockdown and coronavirus. A cheer filled the auditorium when Hancock played the opening notes of one of his jazz standards, “Cantaloupe Island.” As it devolved into an abstract free jazz rendition of the song, the interplay between Pinderhughes, Hancock, and Loueke shone bright, as each member traded bars and challenged one another.

From the opening eclectic medley of snippets from past songs that Hancock calls “Overture”, to the captivating, keytar-centric encore of “Chameleon”, which earned a second standing ovation from the crowd, this concert was a masterclass in jazz. It showed that at 81, Herbie Hancock is still at the top of the game. The program promised that Hancock was working on an album, his first since 2010, and if this concert is any indication, I can’t wait to listen to it.

Herbie Hancock at the Barbican gig review: 82 and still thrillingly unpredictable

herbie hancock tour 2022

Herbie Hancock was welcomed like a hero at the Barbican last night for a packed out concert on his way to join other musical veterans at Glastonbury where he’s playing on Sunday. His London concert opened a summer preview of the EFG London Jazz festival which takes place in November.

Now aged 82, Herbie Hancock got a piano for his 7th birthday and played a Mozart piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra aged 11. He’s been performing for over 70 years, has won 14 Grammy Awards and influenced jazz, funk and hip hop and several other genres - all rather far from Mozart.

His opening Overture, lasting nearly half an hour, seemed a deliberate statement to show how unpredictable his music is. It began with what sounded like birdsong on a distant planet. Over Hancock’s other-worldly keyboard sounds, the guitar and bass added intermittent insect-like interjections while the drums kept a discreet but steady pulse. The piece then moved into exuberance with a life-affirming trumpet solo, followed by reflection and further explorations on piano. It was an arresting opening.

“If we came in and you weren’t here, we wouldn’t be playing what we just played,” Hancock said (he talked quite a lot during the show). “You, the audience, are the sixth person in the band. We want to respond to your response. That is how things are supposed to work. That is how life is supposed to work.”

Although Hancock, dressed in a cool black smock and trousers, is the star, swivelling swiftly between keyboard and grand piano, his quintet is an ensemble working as a team. Terence Blanchard, on trumpet, brought a bright burnished joy to his solos. Lionel Loueke on guitar had one of his finest moments with an upbeat solo to which he was skat singing, rhythmically breathing and adding Xhosa language vocal clicks. It was a tour de force.

James Genus on bass guitar, with a couple of extraordinary solos, mouthed the notes as he played. And probably the hardest-working member of the band was Justin Tyson on drums, always keeping a groove, but never getting stuck in them and varying the textures from beginning to end.

The repertoire was mostly pieces from the 1970s, but given a contemporary makeover. He omitted hits like Watermelon Man and Rock It, but concluded with Canteloupe Island. The downside is his love of the Vocoder, a device that makes the voice sound like an instrument, which he pioneered, but used excessively in Come Running to Me.

There was a standing ovation at the end, of course, and as an encore, Chameleon represented exactly what Herbie Hancock is in music.

"Rockit" and "Future Shock" marked Hancock's foray into electronic dance sounds; during the same period he also continued to work in an acoustic setting with V.S.O.P. His astonishing 34 Grammy nominations, spanning from the late ‘60s to the 2000s, attest to his unquenchable genius and enduring popularity with fans.

Still actively touring, still recording, endlessly engaged in the near-spiritual quest that music has become for him, Hancock has earned the title bestowed on him by The Washington Post : “today’s greatest living artist.”

Now in the seventh decade of his professional life, Herbie Hancock remains where he has always been: at the forefront of world culture, technology, business and music. Herbie Hancock has been an integral part of every popular music movement since the 1960’s. As a member of the Miles Davis Quintet that pioneered a groundbreaking sound in jazz, he also developed new approaches on his own recordings, followed by his work in the 70s — with record-breaking albums such as “Headhunters” — that combined electric jazz with funk and rock in an innovative style that continues to influence contemporary music. “Rockit” and “Future Shock” marked Hancock’s foray into electronic dance sounds; during the same period he also continued to work in an acoustic setting with V.S.O.P.

Hancock received an Academy Award for his Round Midnight film score and 14 Grammy Awards, including Album Of The Year for “River: The Joni Letters,” and two 2011 Grammy Awards for the globally collaborative CD, “The Imagine Project.”

Hancock serves as Creative Chair for Jazz for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association and as Institute Chairman of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz. In 2011 Hancock was named a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, and in December of 2013, received a Kennedy Center Honor. His memoir, Herbie Hancock: Possibilities, was published by Viking in 2014, and in February 2016 he was awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Hancock is currently in the studio at work on a new album.

Syracuse Jazz Fest 2024 lineup, schedule: What to know before you go

A Syracuse music tradition is celebrating its 38th year with big names in jazz, R&B, swing, rock and more.

The 2024 National Grid Syracuse International Jazz Fest will take place June 26-30, at multiple venues in Syracuse, N.Y. Headliners include Kenny G on Friday, June 28; The O’Jays on Saturday, June 29; and The Mavericks on Thursday, June 27; all three concerts will take place on the main Amazon Outdoor Stage in Clinton Square.

All Syracuse Jazz Festival performances are free to attend.

The fun kicks off Wednesday, June 26, with local and regional artists performing in 20 different venues throughout Syracuse. Highlights include tributes to Sarah Vaughan and Donny Hathaway; Wayne Tucker & The Bad Motha’s; The Latin Groove Connection; the Joe Magnarelli Organ Band; Marissa Mulder & Jon Weber; and Syracuse Area Music Awards (SAMMYS) winners like Shawn Maurice Seals & SMX, E S P, and Jimmy John’s Vibe.

Other artists on the five-day schedule include McKinley James and the Catherine Russell Band on Thursday, June 27; the Gunhild Carling Big Band (“Sweden’s Queen of Swing”) and a celebration of Ella Fitzgerald by the Freda Payne Big Band on Friday, June 28; Gino Vanelli and saxophone great James Carter paying tribute to the late Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis on Saturday, June 29; and “Return to Community: A Sunday Gospel Jazz Service” featuring The Bowie State University Gospel Choir, The Black Celestial Choral Ensemble (BCCE) of Syracuse University, and a community choir at Syracuse University’s Hendricks Chapel on Sunday, June 30.

“It all starts with the music, that’s the reason we’re here,” Malfitano said when the lineup was announced in March.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2024 Syracuse Jazz Fest (see full schedule at bottom):

Kenny G, who previously played Jazz Fest in 2012 and 2013, is a smooth jazz saxophonist and one of the best-selling artists of all time. He’s released more than a dozen albums and won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Composition with 1994′s “Forever in Love.”

The O’Jays are an R&B, soul and funk group known for songs like “Love Train,” “For the Love of Money,” and “I Love Music.” The band, currently on a farewell tour with original members Eddie Levert and Walter Lee Williams, has been inducted in the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Rhythm & Blues Music Hall of Fame.

The Mavericks are a Grammy-winning band known for their mix of country, rock, Latin, Americana and pop music on songs like “All You Ever Do is Bring Me Down,” “What a Crying Shame” and “Dance the Night Away.” The Raul Malo-led group previously performed at Syracuse Jazz Fest in 2017 .

All performances will be free of charge, including the club and main stage shows. No tickets are required.

PARKING / DIRECTIONS

Clinton Square is located at 161 W Genesee St, Syracuse, N.Y. ( Click here for Google Maps directions .)

Parking is available on city streets surrounding Clinton Square and in various lots and parking garages. Rates may vary.

There are multiple Centro bus stops along N. Salina St., E. Washington St. and Franklin St.; the festival site is located half a mile north of the Centro Transit Hub on Salina Street. Taxis and ride-share services can also drop off passengers near Clinton Square.

FOOD / DRINK

There will be food and drink vendors at Clinton Square on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, while the club shows will be at local bars and restaurants.

There will be minimal seating provided at Jazz Fest, so attendees are invited and encouraged to bring their own chairs. Seating areas include the Clinton Square fountain/skating rink and grass around the Soldiers & Sailors Monument.

More than 20,000 people saw Herbie Hancock and Gladys Knight perform at Syracuse Jazz Fest in 2023, according to Jazz Fest founder and executive producer Frank Malfitano. 2022′s event featured 16,500 attendees after a four-year hiatus.

Some past Jazz Fests drew even bigger crowds, including 40,000 for Aretha Franklin in 2007 at Onondaga Community College and 35,000 for Ray Charles, Dave Brubeck and Diana Krall in 2000 at Clinton Square. Giant video screens and sound towers help ensure everyone can see and hear the performers, but Kenny G, The Mavericks and The O’Jays could be big draws if the weather cooperates.
