What is the Basic Traveling Allowance (BTA)?

Traveling abroad for various reasons such as business, education, or leisure can be a costly affair. The basic traveling allowance (BTA) is an allowance given to travelers by their home country’s government to help them meet their expenses while abroad. BTA is a crucial financial aid provided to help travelers manage their expenses during their trip.

Definition and Meaning of BTA

The basic traveling allowance is a sum of money that is provided to travelers by their home country’s government to help them cover their expenses while traveling abroad. BTA is usually given in the form of cash, traveler’s cheques, or a prepaid card. The amount of BTA provided to individuals varies depending on the country of destination, the purpose of travel, and the duration of stay.

Why is BTA Required?

Traveling abroad can be expensive, and the expenses can vary depending on the country of destination, the purpose of travel, and the duration of stay. The basic traveling allowance is required to help travelers manage their expenses while abroad and prevent them from running into financial difficulties. BTA is also provided to ensure that travelers have sufficient funds to return to their home country in case of an emergency.

Who Needs to Apply for BTA?

Anyone who is traveling abroad and needs financial assistance can apply for BTA. However, the eligibility for BTA varies from country to country, and travelers are advised to check with their respective governments’ travel policies.

How to Apply for BTA?

The process of applying for BTA varies from country to country. Generally, travelers need to fill out an application form and provide proof of their travel plans, such as flight tickets and hotel reservations. They may also need to provide proof of financial stability and a valid passport.

How is BTA Calculated?

The amount of BTA provided to travelers is calculated based on various factors such as the country of destination, the purpose of travel, and the duration of stay. In some countries, BTA is calculated based on the daily expenses of the traveler. In other countries, BTA is a fixed amount.

BTA Limits and Restrictions

There are limits and restrictions on the amount of BTA that can be provided to travelers. These limits and restrictions vary from country to country, and travelers are advised to check with their respective governments’ travel policies.

What Expenses Can BTA Cover?

The expenses that can be covered by BTA vary depending on the country of destination, the purpose of travel, and the duration of stay. Generally, BTA can cover expenses such as accommodation, food, transportation, and emergency medical expenses.

How to Get BTA in Different Countries?

The process of getting BTA varies from country to country. Travelers are advised to check with their respective governments’ travel policies to determine the process of getting BTA in their country of destination.

What Happens if You Don’t Use BTA?

If travelers do not use their BTA during their trip, they can exchange it for their home country’s currency upon their return. However, there may be restrictions on the amount of BTA that can be exchanged.

How to Exchange Unused BTA?

The process of exchanging unused BTA varies from country to country. Travelers are advised to check with their respective governments’ travel policies to determine the process of exchanging unused BTA.

Conclusion: Benefits and Drawbacks of BTA

The basic traveling allowance is a crucial financial aid provided to travelers to help them manage their expenses while abroad. However, there are limits and restrictions on the amount of BTA that can be provided, and travelers are advised to check with their respective governments’ travel policies. While BTA can be beneficial for travelers, it is important to spend it wisely and keep track of expenses to avoid running out of funds during the trip.

How to Apply for PTA and BTA from Banks in Nigeria

pta

Are you relocating or traveling abroad soon? Then you need to request for a travel allowance from your bank. Here’s why – at the moment, there’s a significant gap between the official rates and black market rates.

Unfortunately, this means any Nigerian traveler who plans on swapping their Naira for USD, GBP, or EUR before traveling abroad is automatically at a loss because they have to do this exchange using the black market rates.

Thankfully, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) allocates specific foreign exchange currencies for situations like this. So if you’re eligible for a travel allowance, you can swap your Naira directly from your bank at a lesser rate. In this article, we’ll show you how to do this.

Types of Travel Allowance

If you’re traveling abroad, you can either apply for a personal travel allowance (PTA) or a business travel allowance (BTA). This is also available in any registered traditional bank in Nigeria.

You can get a PTA if you’re traveling as an international student or going on a vacation. However, you can only purchase up to $4,000 every quarter (90 days). BTAs are for executives traveling solely for business reasons and the limit is $5000 every quarter (90 days).

Eligibility Criteria for PTA from the Central Bank of Nigeria

So if you have personal reasons for traveling abroad and you’re ready to apply for a PTA, here are the requirements

  • An international passport
  • A flight ticket originating from Nigeria
  • A valid visa
  • Admission letter if you’re going as a student
  • Return flight tickets
  • You have to be older than 18 years
  • Not be visiting a blacklisted country
  • The travel date should be within the next two weeks

Once you have all of this available, you can now follow the steps to apply.

Steps to Apply for a PTA in Nigeria

Fortunately, the entire application process is now online. Here’s how to go about it;

  • Visit the trade portal monitoring system’s website
  • Create an account by entering your valid BVN

Trade portal dashboard

  • An OTP will be sent to the email address linked to your BVN
  • Log in and tap on form A

PTA form A

  • Fill out your personal information and click on next
  • Tap on PTA and fill out the remaining details like how much you need

PTA request form

  • Fill out your bank information and the branch you’d want to pick up your cash from
  • Upload all the necessary documents and don’t forget to include a letter of authority to debit your account
  • Preview your form and submit
  • You’ll get a response within 14 days

Also, keep in mind that the cost of this application is N5,000 and it’ll be directly debited from the account you entered in your application. Once you get a response, visit the bank with your international passport to pick up your request.

CBN Requirements for BTA in Nigeria

The requirements for a business travel allowance are a lot more rigid than a personal travel allowance. Here’s what you need to qualify for a BTA;

  • Introduction letter from your company explaining the reason for the travel
  • A letter of invitation from your business partners abroad
  • Copies of the CAC documentation
  • The travel and return date should be within the next two weeks
  • A credit balance of the amount you want to purchase

Steps to Apply for BTA

If you have all of these documents available, here’s how to apply for a business travel allowance online;

bta in travel

  • Enter the type of BTA you’re requesting for along with how much you need
  • Fill out your bank information and the bank branch if you’re picking up your cash
  • Upload all the necessary documents and don’t forget to include a letter giving authority to debit your account

You’ll get a response within the next 14 days. Be sure to keep checking your portal within this period.

A lot of travelers get tempted to either upload fake tickets or other documents especially when they don’t meet all the criteria. However, this is a punishable offense by law. So we recommend preparing ahead of time.

What Every Business Should Know about Business Travel Accident (BTA) Insurance

Written by Adrienne Schickert on Sep 6, 2022

Most businesses will do anything in their power to keep their employees safe from the expected (e.g., providing health insurance) to the routine (e.g., detailing safety procedures in the employee handbook) to the unimaginable. No one expects accidental injury or death to occur on an ordinary work trip, but it's a real possibility that any business should be prepared for. That's where business travel accident (BTA) insurance comes in.

What is business travel accident insurance?

Business travel accident (BTA) insurance provides financial protection for businesses, employees, and their families in the event of an accident during a business trip. This can include accidents that occur while traveling to and from work-related events, as well as those that happen during short-term or long-term work-related travel.

BTA insurance provides separate and essential insurance not included in other types of commercial lines , such as workers' compensation or life insurance, but it is not intended to replace those policies. Rather, it fills in essential gaps in coverage, functioning as an “umbrella” policy under which various facets of travel benefits and services can be given to employees while traveling on business without integration into other insurance programs.

What does business travel accident insurance cover?

BTA insurance can cover expenses related to medical treatment, lost wages, and death. It can also provide coverage for travel disruptions caused by an accident, as well as emergency evacuation and repatriation costs. Most BTA policies cover long-term travel for up to a year.

One misconception about BTA coverage is that it is intended only for travel over long distances or extreme circumstances. Depending on the type of coverage, your employees can be covered whether they are going down the block for a business lunch or traveling halfway around the world for a conference. Coverage depends on your company's needs, but could include:

  • Business-only coverage for local, domestic, or international travel
  • 24-hour all risk business & pleasure coverage, for "always-on" employees like the C-suite or those traveling on long-term foreign assignments
  • Occupational accident coverage for high-risk fields in which employees could be injured during their work, regardless of whether they are traveling
  • Coverage extensions for 1099 contractors, board members, and other non-employees

How can you customize business travel accident insurance to your needs?

BTA insurance can be customized to fit the specific needs of a business. For example, some businesses may want to add coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions due to an accident. Others may want to increase the level of coverage for medical expenses or lost wages.

Industry-specific enhancements are numerous but may include:

  • Corporate aircraft coverage
  • War risk coverage
  • Political evacuation
  • Out of country medical coverage

Additionally, most policies come standard with employee resources like assistance with medical evacuation or repatriation.

How do you know if your business needs business travel accident insurance?

A lot of companies think that if they have something like foreign workers' compensation coverage, that is enough to cover the greatest risks during travel. Most accidental death and injury claims come from car accidents. How are your employees covered for something like the ride to and from the airport?

After the outbreak of COVID-19, many businesses cancelled or postponed work-related travel. However, as we saw a rise in remote work, we also saw an uptick in travel by "road warriors" in some fields, especially those in sales and high-contact fields looking to maintain relationships with clients. Plus, flexible "work-from-anywhere" policies at startups and tech companies are blurring the lines between domestic and overseas work, potentially putting companies at risk when business travel accident coverage is not considered.

While some companies will require coverage at substantially larger premiums than others, BTA insurance can be beneficial for nearly any business and will continue to play a role in the future of business as we see world conditions change.

International travel: business travel and accident (bta) insurance protects employers.

Rick Ortiz Headshot

Business travel accident (BTA) insurance plans are staples in corporate portfolios, minimizing travel risk and protecting employees with medical coverage. However, as business travel plummets, the need for new BTA plans declined and put incumbent plans at risk for renewal. As a result, some employers terminated or did not renew their BTA plans, repurposing the cost of these plans to other needs.

Now is the time for companies to assess how they will protect employees as they face new travel risks and overcome gaps in traditional BTA plans.

Business travel losses have been staggering, resulting in a 79% decline in North America travel from April to December of 2020.

The Good News is That 2021 is Showing a Robust Rebound

BTA Critical Coverage

Elements Employers are ramping up their due diligence efforts to protect their employees. Whether in the workplace or during business travel, companies remain focused on protecting their employees' health, safety, and welfare.

Where there is peak interest is whether policy limits are sufficient to address potential increased exposures. For example, robust BTA programs cover incidents of COVID 19 virus, which realistically has not changed and still protects employees who contract the virus. However, employers must address gaps where there may be inadequate coverage, especially for employees who travel to foreign countries.

One area of recent interest is whether COVID-19 testing is a covered expense by OOC Medical riders. Our experience suggests that this is not the case, such riders are specific to urgent and emergency illnesses or accidents, not intended to support tests prior to or after business travel. Additionally, the OOC medical coverage only applies once the insured has left their home country. The expectation is that covid testing to certainly be an eligible expense for home country programs or other primary medical plans. Of course, each situation may be different, and each claim should be evaluated by the carrier based on specific circumstances and policy language.

New Considerations for BTA Coverage

BTA policies provide vital protection for an active, multinational workforce. As companies reconfigure how and where their workforce performs their jobs, they must also consider their eligibility for BTA coverage.

In addition to the place of employment, companies must also identify coverage gaps. Of primary concern are OOC medical limits, which are typically capped at $100,000. However, given the COVID-19 virus spread, medical costs will quickly deplete that limit. Consideration of larger limits like $250,000 or $500,000 may be more appropriate.

Finally, corporations may consider the need for travel tracking apps to verify the location and whereabouts of employees. These apps are becoming more popular but do have a policy and legal ramifications to consider.

Developing a Global Standard for Mitigating Travel Accident Exposures

Companies are taking a closer look at corporate travel accident exposures. As uncertainty increases, it is time to migrate to a new paradigm that protects both employers and employees.

Employers can do their part to protect employees by establishing clear guidelines for travel, including pre-trip approval and assessment of travel risk. Scheduling trips through a single travel channel as well as providing information to employees on what to do in a crisis is also helpful, according to Direct Travel . Companies can also use a single travel carrier to arrange travel and provide employee assistance wherever they travel.

BTA carriers can ensure a consistent solution, provide a single point of contact, and offer a full range of business travel insurance coverage and assistance services. In addition, a comprehensive BTA benefit will complement an employer’s primary medical and worker compensation programs, including foreign medical assistance, medical evacuation, and repatriation of remains provisions.

BTAs are Now Creative and Flexible

Standard BTA policies are becoming more flexible and creative, adapting to new scenarios that would not typically come to mind. As business travel increases on domestic and international fronts, assessing new risks and protecting employees have never been more critical.

As we adapt to new post-pandemic environments, Woodruff Sawyer works closely with clients and carriers to understand their risks and get the most from their BTA policies. For more information, reach out to us or subscribe to the Woodruff Sawyer newsletter to get expert insights into benefits, risk, and current trends.

EHIC, i.e. European Health Insurance Card , is a document common for all European Union and European Economic Area countries (Iceland, Norway, Liechtenstein) and the Swiss Confederation, which entitles citizens of these countries to receive state-funded emergency and necessary health care to the extent ensured for inhabitants of each relevant country. The EHIC can be used in foreign clinics that are members of the National Sickness Fund and that have accepted the usage of the EHIC. Therefore, before seeking medical care abroad, we recommend you to inquire in advance whether the relevant clinic accepts the EHIC.

All residents of the Republic of Latvia may receive the EHIC card for free, therefore, when traveling abroad, be sure to obtain the EHIC card. For more information about the possibilities of receiving the EHIC card, visit the website of the National Health Service .

Why do you need BTA Travel insurance if you have the EHIC card?

  • The EHIC card does not cover the costs and fees for client’s transportation, repatriation, emergency/ rescue services, which can amount to very significant expenses.
  • Even in the case when the client enters a foreign clinic that accepts the EHIC, the customer will be charged to pay the fees mandatory in the relevant country. Although in Latvia patient fees are relatively low, in Europe they can be even more than 10 times higher.
  • When using the EHIC, the foreign clinic receives the payment from the Latvian State budget within two years, therefore in most cases private clinics, including dentists and ski resort clinics, refuse to accept the EHIC.
  • The EHIC card does not provide protection against other risks which may occur during traveling or foreign trips.

An example showing the necessity for the EHIC and Travel Insurance:

  • State of health of a resident of Latvia suddenly deteriorated while visiting a country in the European Union. As a result, the woman was placed in a clinic. When her health condition slightly improved and it was possible to evacuate her to her country of origin, the bill for medical services amounted to EUR 24 000.
  • Given that the Latvian resident had the EHIC, she did not have to pay the entire amount from her own personal funds. The EHIC covered 75% (EUR 18 000) of the medical expenses, the remaining 25% (6 000 EUR) would have to be covered by the woman herself, if she had not had the BTA travel insurance policy. Medical evacuation costs that were not covered by the EHIC amounted to EUR 4 300.

If the woman, additionally to the security provided by the EHIC, had not purchased the BTA Travel insurance, she would have to pay EUR 10 300 for the medical services received in the foreign clinic and medical evacuation to Latvia from her own personal funds. In this case, this amount was covered by BTA.

Protect Employees Around the Globe with Business Travel Accident Insurance

By April Rowe | Published April 20, 2021

bta in travel

April Rowe, Global Client Manager on the ABD Global Team, works with companies with a growing global presence, assisting them in managing global benefits, insurance regulations, and compliance with foreign and international laws and guidelines. The global benefits and insurance landscape can be a complex web of changing regulations and expectations, and April, along with Global team members Ed Cha, Eddie Gow, and Mei Huang, ensure that companies are informed and protected as they expand into international markets.

A key piece of this coverage comes in the form of Business Travel Accident (BTA) Insurance, which offsets the risk of injury or illness for employees who travel for work. In this Q&A with April, she discusses the risks of business travel and the role BTA insurance plays in robust employee benefits and insurance programs.

What is Business Travel Accident (BTA) Insurance?

BTA insurance is a policy that provides accident protection for employees traveling internationally or staying for an extended period of time in another country for work. Frequently included in BTA policies is coverage for injury or illness that requires medical attention, travel assistance, and sojourn and personal deviation coverage for employees who travel for leisure before or after business travel. Costs can quickly add up in case of emergency, and business travel accident insurance is typically inexpensive and can provide real protection from the financial burden of these emergencies.

How does BTA insurance fit into global benefits programs?

BTA insurance often functions as both an extension of an employee benefits plan and as an insurance policy that covers gaps not fulfilled by liability or foreign package insurance. Because most employee health and benefits plans do not include coverage in foreign countries or would consider care received abroad as “out-of-network”, BTA insurance can provide employees with medical benefits abroad in case of injury or unexpected illness without the worry of massive out-of-pocket costs.

Additionally, employers have a duty of care obligation to employees when sending them on necessary travel to foreign countries. Whether traveling to foreign offices and job sites or staying for extended periods of time to meet with clients or vendors, employees can be exposed to innumerous risks, and because they’re there on company business, employers are responsible for their well-being in the event of an emergency. Often, we find that typical liability or foreign package insurance doesn’t include coverage for employees traveling abroad or has coverage far too low to cover the potentially enormous losses incurred from emergency medical care.

ABD has global BTA plan designs with several carriers to provide blanket coverage for all of an employers’ global employee base, which keeps the administration of the policy simple.

What’s the most surprising thing about BTA insurance?

I’m always shocked by how expensive traveling without business travel accident coverage can be – costs are truly staggering, and we’ve seen sums in the range of hundreds of thousands of dollars . It can also be surprising to know how many employers and employees travel without understanding that risk.

An example from one of our clients of their BTA insurance policy really working as it was designed involved a U.S. employee, with a preexisting condition, traveling in a European country for several weeks for work. When he was abroad, his condition worsened, requiring immediate emergency care. He was admitted to the intensive care unit, where doctors had to coordinate his care with his specialists in the U.S. and eventually approved him for medical evacuation via air ambulance to receive treatment at home. We had fortunately just placed a BTA policy for this company, which covered the entirety of the cost for his care abroad and medical evacuation and otherwise would have been several hundreds of thousands of dollars for either him or his employer.

International travel is currently very limited for U.S. residents due to COVID-19 restrictions. How do you predict global business travel insurance to change in a post-pandemic world?

With several recent state laws and regulations created to hold employers accountable for their non-remote employees contracting or transmitting the coronavirus, the conversation around employers’ responsibility for their employees’ health in the workplace is changing. I think COVID-19 will likely set a precedent for a higher duty of care expected of employers.

Currently, no carriers provide coverage for costs like COVID-19 testing, mandatory quarantine, and other costs of COVID-19 protection. In the “new normal” of the post-pandemic insurance landscape, I think we may see coverage evolve to protect against pandemics and other public health risks, including costs like mandatory quarantines and prevention.

PTA and BTA ▷ How to Apply Online and in Nigerian Banks Now!

Photo of Saint Chinedu

Lot of Nigerians are concerned about the rates and requirements to register and buy Personal Travel Allowance (PTA) and Business Travel Allowance (BTA) from banks.

Are you one of them?

Have you been asking how much is PTA/BTA (US Dollar, EUR, GBP) in Nigeria banks today?

If YES, this is the only article to read today as you will get to know the right steps to take.

Getting started…

Personal Travel Allowance (PTA) Requirements in Nigeria

Here are the requirements for PTA:

  • You are at least 18 years old.
  • The flight time to your travel destination is 5 hours or more.
  • The purchase is within 14 days of your departure.
  • A valid Nigerian passport.
  • A valid visa of the country of destination.
  • A return air ticket.

How to Apply for Personal Travel Allowance (PTA) Online

This form is used by an individual to apply for foreign exchange personally.

Only the applicant can be the beneficiary.

A quarterly limit of $4000 is applicable here.

Here are the steps to apply for PTA online:

  • Login into the TRMS applicant portal.
  • At the Trade Services TAB, click on the Personal Travel Allowance (PTA).
  • Fill all the required fields properly.
  • Attach Documents requested on the document Tab. Documents can be in PDF/JPG/PNG/TIFF form and should not be over 1.99mb.
  • Preview your form before submission by clicking on the preview tab at the top right of the page or NEXT at the bottom on the Page.
  • An email will be sent notifying you that your application is being processed.

Business Travel Allowance (BTA) Requirements in Nigeria

Here are the requirements for BTA:

  • Certificate of Incorporation.
  • Letter of invitation from the company (business partner) abroad.
  • Letter of nomination from the Nigerian company.

How to Apply for Business Travel Allowance (BTA) Online

BTA form is used by an organization to apply for foreign exchange for their employees.

A quarterly limit of $5000 per beneficiary is applicable here.

Here are the steps to apply for BTA online:

  • Log into the applicant portal.
  • Review the basic information and click on NEXT.
  • On the Trade Services TAB, click on the Business Travel Allowance (BTA) shortcut or navigate to the BTA transaction purpose field.

What if I have a Visa on Arrival?

If your destination country is visa on arrival:

  • Ensure your trip meets PTA requirements.
  • If it does, login to the portal.
  • Fill the fields and upload the documents (international passport data page, return flight ticket).
  • Upload a blank document as a visa page.
  • Then, contact your bank to explain that you do not actually require a visa to visit the destination country. An exceptional approval should cover for that.
  • PTA turnaround time is 1 business day.
  • A residence permit to your destination country can be used in place of a visa or e-Visa.
  • For PTA, third-party applications are not allowed. However, you can apply for a BTA if your third-party is a corporate account.
  • To avoid issues, your bank account name should be the same as your passport.
  • Depending on the bank, PTA can be given out in cash or electronically.
  • Once your application is approved by the trade system, a 16-digit ‘form number’ is generated and displayed on your request. You can also contact your bank to confirm and proceed for collection.
  • Most banks operate on a first-come-first-serve basis. So, after application, follow up with your bank with your AF-number.
  • After collecting the dollars and eventually you didn’t travel, you’re expected to return the cash to the bank within 2 weeks.
  • If you couldn’t upload your flight ticket while uploading the required documents, just login, choose form-a click history, choose the application and upload missing documents. Ensure to fund your account before applying.
  • You can inquire about the exchange rate and turnaround time from your bank. Insufficient funding is a good reason to disapprove a TRMS transaction.
  • If you are having adb_review status after application, contact your bank with your AF number.

PTA and BTA FX Defaulters

Commercial banks are required by Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) regulations to publish names and BVN of PTA and BTA FX defaulters.

The customers to be listed cancelled their trip and failed to return the FX availed to them despite several mails, text messages and follow-up phone calls.

This offense can earn the defaulter a BVN blacklist and/or jail term.

When to Buy Travel Insurance: Timing Your Purchase Perfectly

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate insurance products to write unbiased product reviews.

  • Purchase travel insurance when traveling internationally or on long and expensive trips.
  • Buying travel insurance right after booking your trip is best, as some coverage options are time-sensitive.
  • Cancel For Any Reason policies and coverage for pre-existing coverage require early purchase.

Travel insurance protects you against financial losses and medical emergencies while on a trip. You'll want to book travel insurance when going on long, expensive, or international trips. However, the exact timing of your purchase is also important.

Generally, you'll want to buy travel insurance soon after you book your trip to get the maximum coverage out of your policy. Here's what you need to know about travel insurance and when you should buy it.

Though you can insure your trip anytime after booking, the best time to purchase travel insurance is immediately after booking your trip.

For one, unexpected circumstances may arise between when you book your trip and when you leave. If an injury or inclement weather cancels your trip before you have a chance to purchase travel insurance, you may not get a refund. Purchasing travel insurance early reduces the chances of that happening.

Michelle Osborn, owner of boutique travel agency Outta Here Travels , says, "Most travel insurance policies have a time limit of when you can purchase to get the maximum benefits."

It's important to note that you do not have to have every detail of your trip planned before purchasing travel insurance. Most policies are flexible, so you can add details and update your costs in the days leading up to the trip. Don't let some unplanned details in your trip prevent you from purchasing travel insurance.

When you purchase travel quickly after booking, you'll have additional coverage options.

  • Purchase cancel for any reason coverage , which reimburses you for 60% to 75% of your costs if you back out on your travel plans for a reason not usually covered. CFAR policies must be purchased within 15 to 21 days of putting down the first deposit on your trip. You can find our picks for the best CFAR travel insurance here.
  • Guarantee coverage for pre-existing conditions. Many travel insurers won't cover pre-existing conditions unless you purchase coverage within two weeks of booking your trip.
  • Cancel your travel insurance if you're not happy with it. Most plans allow you to cancel your insurance and get a refund — as long as you do so within 15 days and your trip hasn't started.

If you cannot purchase your travel insurance right after booking, you should still qualify for a policy if your trip hasn't been canceled. Most companies allow you to buy insurance until the day of your trip. You just won't have access to CFAR or pre-existing condition coverage.

When to buy annual travel insurance

Annual travel insurance , sometimes referred to as multi-trip insurance, covers you for all your trips over a 12-month period. This type of travel insurance may be a good option if you regularly travel for work or have a handful of trips, particularly international trips, planned for the next 12 months.

"Travel insurance should definitely be purchased anytime you travel out of the United States," Osbon says. "The main reason is most US health insurance policies don't cover treatment internationally."

You may want to buy annual travel insurance just before your first trip begins. Since these plans last 365 days, you can stretch your policy to cover the most travel. However, this may limit your coverage, so tread carefully. For example, you may not be able to get medical coverage for pre-existing conditions.

"In the case of a pre-existing medical condition, you'll need to meet a few requirements to be covered," says Jeff Rolander, director of claims at Faye Travel Insurance . "Faye's travel protection covers pre-existing conditions as long as you purchase your plan within 14 days of your initial trip deposit and are medically able to travel when you purchase your plan."

You should be able to purchase travel insurance any time before the date of your trip. Once the day of your departure rolls around, the window will close. You also can't purchase travel insurance during your trip or after an injury or loss has already happened.

The moral of the story: It's always better to buy sooner rather than later.

"Right when you book your flights or hotel stay is when you should get your trip covered," Rolander says. "The sooner you buy coverage for your trip, the sooner your coverage starts."

When to buy travel insurance frequently asked questions

You should purchase travel insurance within two weeks of booking your trip to receive maximum benefits, especially pre-trip cancellation coverage.

While you can purchase travel insurance up until the day of departure, doing so may limit certain benefits. Additionally, last-minute travel insurance won't cover pre-existing health conditions.

Lengthier and more expensive trips generally call for travel insurance because you have more to lose. Purchasing travel insurance earlier mitigates the potential damage of a cancellation.

Most travel insurance policies allow for modifications or additions within a specific period after purchase, but it's important to check the policy terms.

Purchasing travel insurance early is generally beneficial for comprehensive coverage, but you may see your premiums rise if you make significant changes to your travel plans.

Gov Abiodun commends Ogun pilgrims on successful Hajj exercise

G overnor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has described pilgrims from the state who participated in the last Hajj exercise as worthy ambassadors.

The governor, in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday, lauded the pilgrims for their peaceful conduct during the exercise, saying their stay in the Holy Land was worthwhile based on the fulfilment of one of the five pillars of Islam.

The first batch of the State’s 934 pilgrims to Saudi Arabia arrived on Tuesday, while others are expected to return on Wednesday.

He noted that the state did not record any casualties, despite the huge number of deaths recorded in this year’s pilgrimage.

“On behalf of the good people of Ogun State, I welcome our dear pilgrims back home. Your successful completion of the Hajj is a testament to your devotion and commitment to your faith. We are proud of you and grateful for your safe return.

“Our government is ready to continue providing logistics support to our pilgrims for seamless and spiritually enriching experiences during the Hajj,” he said.

It would be recalled that Prince Abiodun paid the shortfall of N119,560,712.70 in the pilgrims’ Basic Travel Allowance (BTA) as a result of unexpected fluctuations in the foreign exchange rates.

While NAHCON used N1,252.01 per dollar to calculate hajj fare (BTA inclusive) to give $500 as BTA to each pilgrim, the CBN released BTA at N1,530.86 per dollar, which gave each pilgrim $415 instead of $500 earlier proposed.

Going by this development, in order to give each pilgrim $500 at the new exchange rate of N1,530.86 per dollar, the differential to be paid for the state’s 934 pilgrims stood at N119,560,712.70.
