How To Get Here..
If you’re driving from Sydney city, or Sydney airport, look for the signs that lead you towards Wollongong, this is a region about an hour south of the Shire. Similarly if you’re heading north from Melbourne, Canberra, or Wollongong follow the signs that lead you towards Sydney.
There are three bridges leading into the Shire from the northern side; Captain Cook Bridge, Tom Uglys Bridge and Alfords Point Bridge. The quickest route from the city is along South Dowling St, which turns into Southern Cross Drive near Sydney Airport. As you approach Brighton-Le-Sands veer left onto General Holmes drive and continue along the Grand Parade. After about 15minutes you will approach a T-intersection, turn left onto Rocky Point Rd which will take you over Captain Cook Bridge and voila you’re in the Shire!
Approximate Driving Times:
Sydney City to Sutherland Shire: 25km/30minutes
Wollongong to Sutherland Shire: 66km/55minutes
Cityrail operates train services to the Shire every 15-30 minutes, they run on the Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra line. If you’re traveling from Sydney city there are direct trains from the following stations; Kings Cross, Martin Place, Town Hall and Central. The train ride takes approximately 30-45 minutes. If you’re coming from the airport you’ll need to change trains at Wolli Creek Station to get on the Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra line.
Visitors coming from the South, including Nowra, Wollongong and Dapto can travel via the South Coast train line.

There are two shuttle bus companies operating within the Shire. They transport visitors from the airport, cruiseships and other Sydney destinations. Click on the links below for further information.

Cronulla Ferries provides an hourly ferry service from Cronulla to Bundeena (gateway to the Royal National Park) and are proud to claim the purpose built MV Curranulla is the oldest operating commuter ferry in Australia.
Enjoy exploring the Hacking River, one of Sydney’s most unspoilt waterways on a three hour cruise aboard the MV Tom Thumb III. Learn about early explorers of the district, historical settlements and deer farming in the park. Pass by Aboriginal sites whilst discovering their names and meanings; and cruise by some of Sydney’s most magnificent waterfront properties. A full commentary and morning tea is provided on all cruises.
The TSMV Gunnamatta operates scheduled champagne breakfasts, sunset dinner cruises, midweek lunch cruises, Live music cruises, Christmas parties and charters.
The MV Port Hacking Explorer II operates scheduled cruise, swim and dine cruises and is also available for charters and parties for passengers looking for a more relaxed outing.

Enjoy a 2.5 hour sunset dinner cruise aboard the TSMV Gunnamatta exploring the beautiful waterways of Port Hacking, one of Sydney’s most pristine waterways. Hear about the early explorers of the district, cruise by some of Sydney’s most magnificent waterfront properties, discover local Aboriginal landmarks and relax and enjoy the breathtaking sunset.
Cruise includes a glass of champagne on arrival; bruschetta and garlic bread; choice of steak or chicken breast or crispy skinned salmon with chef’s specially prepared sauces, mashed potato, steamed garden vegetables; dessert choice of Sydney mud cake, New York cheesecake or fresh fruit salad with fresh cream, tea and coffee.
A fully licensed bar is on board for customers over 18 years.
Cruises operate October to April Friday and Saturday.

Sit back and relax for three hours as the MV Tom Thumb III cruises around the beautiful Port Hacking River towards Audley. The cruise takes in all scenic attractions including breathtaking views of the Royal National Park, historic landmarks, prominent homes, sites of significance and Aboriginal culture.
A complimentary morning tea is provided during the three hour cruise. Light lunches can be arranged for groups of 10 or more.
Summer Cruises depart 10.30am daily September to May. Winter Cruises depart 10.30am Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday
Also available are group charters aboard the TSMV Gunnamatta. The Gunnamatta is the only fully enclosed, twin level vessel operating on Port Hacking that caters for group sit down lunches, dinners, charters, birthday parties and Christmas parties.

Cronulla to Bundeena ferry service operates an hourly service, 7 days per week. Travel aboard the MV Curranulla the oldest commuter ferry operating to a timetable in Australia. Tickets are purchased onboard the ferry and being public transport we are not able to accept bookings.
