Discover the 5 Largest Airports in Vermont

W hen it comes to the largest airports in Vermont, you’re going to find that most don’t offer commercial flights. In terms of the largest airports in the U.S. , Vermont’s largest airport takes up less than 1,000 acres and ranks 119th per the FAA’s 2022 enplanements data . Even the biggest airport isn’t that big.

Vermont only has 11 public airports, and 81.8% are strictly for private planes and charters. Passengers without their own plane or the money to pay for a private charter use two airports: Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport or Rutland-Southern Vermont Regional Airport. Rutland’s airport only offers small commuter flights through Cape Air, and it’s not the second largest in terms of acreage.

Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport (BTV)

Covering 942 acres in South Burlington, Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport is the largest Vermont airport. Its two asphalt runways measure 3,611 x 75 feet (1,100.6 x 22.9 meters) and 8,320 x 150 feet (2,535.9 x 45.7 meters).

Enplanements were 601,441 in 2022, so it’s also the busiest. Non-stop service is available with American Airlines, Breeze, Delta, Sun Country Airlines, and United and goes to and from:

• New York City
• Philadelphia
• Washington, D.C. (DCA and IAD)

Seasonal service is also offered to:

• Minneapolis-St. Paul

While the airport isn’t technically located in Burlington, it’s very close. South Burlington abuts Vermont’s largest city with bus service available to Burlington and a few other of Vermont’s largest towns and cities , including Winooski, Williston, and Essex Junction.

One thing that visitors don’t always realize is that the ski resorts in Bolton, Jay Peak, Jeffersonville, and Stowe are not nearby and bus service to those towns is limited. Jay Peak is over an hour from the airport while the others are around 30 to 45 minutes. A rental car is essential if you’re planning to head into the Green Mountains.

Five rental car agencies offer rentals at the airport, but I will note that winter tires are rarely available on these rentals. Anyone unaccustomed to driving on wintry roads may find driving difficult. Vermont has a “Safe Roads Not Bare Roads” policy, which means roads can have snow and ice on them. Plus, many main roads are not plowed, sanded, or salted between the hours of 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. EST.

Patrick Leahy Burlington International Airport doesn’t offer direct flights to nearby Boston. If you’re looking to fly into Vermont from Boston, choose the second-largest airport, Rutland-Southern Vermont Regional Airport.

Northeast Kingdom International Airport (EFK)

I find Northeast Kingdom International Airport to be the most scenic airport in Vermont due to the glistening waters of nearby Lake Memphremagog. Newport is three miles from the airport and offers an abundance of shops, restaurants, and outdoor spaces. Fishing and water activities are also popular throughout the year.

In 1939, several area residents looked at developing an airport to serve the northeastern corner of Vermont. The group purchased land from 10 area farms and land-clearing for Newport’s airport began. Commercial airlines used the airport in the late 1950s through the 1960s, but the airport was sold to the State of Vermont in 1967.

Newport State Airport transitioned to Northeast Kingdom International Airport in 2017, but the airport is only used for private and charter flights now. At 540 acres, this is Vermont’s second-largest airport. It has two asphalt runways that measure 5,301 x 100 feet (1,616 x 30 meters) and 3996 x 100 feet (1218 x 30 meters).

Franklin County State Airport (FSO)

Back in 1995, the Grateful Dead held one of their final concerts at the Franklin County State Airport . With Bob Dylan as the opening act, that’s one of the biggest crowds this smaller airport has seen. The state airport and Franklin County Field Days Grounds are adjacent, so the area hosts several big events each year.

Highgate is rural and very close to the Canadian border, but the airport caters to private planes and charters. Covering 348 acres, the airport is the third largest in Vermont. There’s one asphalt runway measuring 3,000 x 60 feet (914.4 x 18.3 meters).

Passengers using this airport have Saint Albans close by, while Burlington is about 45 minutes to the south. Montreal, Quebec, Canada is a little over an hour away, plus the time it takes to get through customs and immigration.

Rutland-Southern Vermont Regional Airport (RUT)

If you’re coming to Vermont from Boston and want a direct flight, Rutland-Southern Vermont Regional Airport is the best option. Its 345 acres make it Vermont’s fourth-largest airport. Rutland’s airport boasts two asphalt runways measuring 5,303 x 100 feet (1,616 x 30 meters) and 3,170 x 75 feet (966 x 23 meters).

Cape Air provides commuter flights to and from Boston three times per day. Charter service is available through Columbia Air Services. For students looking for flying lessons, Green Mountain Flight Training operates from the airport.

As Rutland is farther south than Burlington, it’s a great airport to use if you’re heading to some of Southern Vermont’s ski resorts , such as Okemo or Killington. Rutland also boasts a charming historic district with restaurants, breweries, and the historic Paramount Theater that opened in 1914.

Edward F. Knapp State Airport (MPV)

Finally, there’s Edward F. Knapp State Airport in Barre, which covers just 259 acres. This airport caters to private planes and charters, but Barre’s proximity to the capital city makes it a popular choice for people coming to Montpelier for business or political events.

Edward F. Knapp State Airport, once called the Barre-Montpelier Airport, first had a turf airstrip when it opened in 1929. Barre and Montpelier purchased it in 1935 and built two paved runways. The name changed to Edward F. Knapp State Airport in 1970 to pay tribute to Vermont’s first aeronautics director.

By 1989, commercial service ended. Today, the airport is for charters and private planes. The northwest-southeast Runway 17-35 is 5,000 x 100 feet (1,524 x 30.48 meters), while Runway 5-23 is northeast-southwest and measures 3,001 x 75 feet (914.7 x 22.86 meters). The second runway is only plowed in the winter when time allows.

The Monday, April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse crossed North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada. The total solar eclipse began over the South Pacific Ocean. Weather permitting, the first location in continental North America that experienced totality is Mexico’s Pacific coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT.

The path of the eclipse continued from Mexico, entering the United States in Texas, and traveled through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse. The eclipse entered Canada in Southern Ontario, and continued through Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Cape Breton. The eclipse exited continental North America on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NDT.
