Passenger shares terrifying inside view of cruise ship being completely submerged by huge 30ft waves

It's certainly not smooth sailing....

If you're nervous about the sea or have a cruise booked soon, you might want to look away now.

We all know that huge winds can mean scarily high waves at sea and make for a rocky journey, but now we can actually see what that looks like thanks to two passengers on board on a cruise ship that was repeatedly submerged under waves.

The Royal Caribbean's Anthem Of The Seas cruise ship , which holds around 4,500 guests and 1,600 crew, was travelling from New Jersey heading to Port Canaveral in Florida before it was caught in the 120mph storm .

Footage has shown the moment a Royal Caribbean ship was caught in a storm out at sea. (ANDER GILLENEA/AFP via Getty Images)

In the video, we see what starts out as a smooth journey , with the sea being calm and peaceful. Yet as the video continues and the journey for the ship gets more difficult, the waves get choppier and it becomes clear the storm isn't going to ease off.

At one point in the footage, the camera watches out the window as one of the passengers points out that the sea "looks black" with the storm, as well as noticing how high the waves had risen.

In another segment, they point out how much the boat appears to have tipped, meaning walking around the deck looked odd and meant you needed to tilt yourself.

Then in another clip they show waves hitting their window, submerging them into darkness for several seconds before rising again.

Pointing out that they're on the third floor but still going under, the waves are thought to have hit over 30 feet.

At one point the waves and sea cover the cruise ship window completely. (YouTube/Stephen J Burke)

Shared on YouTube , the footage has had over 20 million views since it was uploaded in March 2017.

Commenting on the clip, one person said: "Everyone’s freaking out about how crazy the waves look. But imagine being a 1700s sailor and getting caught in a storm like this..."

A second person wrote: "I wasn't freaked out that much. And then the window was covered in a wave for a solid 8 seconds and I was spooked."

However, the footage was originally filmed in February 2016, but it's continued to be discussed on Reddit as one person responded to the video: "I would be puking blood and begging everyone to kill me.."

Another person shared: "That is terrifying."

While another added: "Excuse me while I have a panic attack." Relatable.

Others pointed out how calm the two men were, as one wrote: "I'm impressed that guy is still smiling after the huge wave covers the entire window."

And a final shared: "This guy is absolutely way too calm about this."

'We Had Crew Crying': Video Shows Cruise Ship Pummeled By Massive Waves, 100 Passengers Injured The Spirit of Discovery was headed back to the U.K. after the captain heard of inclement weather approaching.

By Emily Rella Nov 9, 2023

It was every cruisegoer's worst nightmare come true last week when violent storms and sky-high waves caused roughly 100 passengers to be injured, five of which were considered to be serious.

Passengers onboard Saga Cruises' Spirit of Discovery were on day nine of a two-week journey from Southern England through the Canary Islands, located off the coast of Spain. While crossing the Bay of Biscay (which borders France and Spain), the ship was pummeled by massive waves.

"People were writing texts to their loved ones in case we capsized," one passenger told BBC News . "The tone of voice in our captain... he was physically scared. We had crew crying. We had many passengers in awful states of fear."

The passenger also told the outlet that there were passengers who suffered "horrific broken bones, pelvises, lacerations, stitches," and that the majority of the clientele was elderly.

Multiple users took to social media to document experiences that loved ones were having while onboard the ship.

I've heard from my in-laws that they've got 7 passengers are needing hospitalisation and a 150 have needed treatment onboard. Hope the people needing hospitalisation aren't too seriously injured. Questions definitely need answering! — (@KattyB08) November 6, 2023

Although the ship was originally supposed to dock in Las Palmas, the ship's captain decided to change directions due to weather and instead attempted to dock the ship at La Coruña near the northwest tip of Spain.

"Spirit of Discovery was sadly caught in the challenging weather conditions this weekend, as she started her return to the UK. The ship remained safe at all times, but due to the impact of the storm some guests sustained injuries," a spokesperson for Saga Cruises told The Independent . "All were treated immediately by onboard medical staff. While the weather is clearly beyond our control, we want to offer our sincere apologies to all those affected who are now safely back, having sailed home in calmer seas."

Saga Cruises did not immediately respond to Entrepreneur 's request for comment.

Carnival Cruise Line released a statement to FOX Weather on Monday morning to describe the incident, which was reported to occur Saturday:

"Carnival Sunshine’s return to Charleston was impacted by the weather and rough seas on Saturday. The weather’s prolonged impact on the Charleston area delayed the ship’s arrival on Sunday and as a result, the next voyage’s embarkation was also delayed. We appreciate the patience and understanding of all our guests.

"The weather and rough surf led to some crew cabins being temporarily taken out of service while we clean up water damage. All the public areas of the ship are open and in service and Carnival Sunshine is currently operating its next cruise, a five-day Bahamas sailing."

VACATION TURNS INTO NIGHTMARE FOR A SEATTLE MAN AFTER A ‘ROGUE WAVE’ PARALYZES HIM

The low-pressure system responsible for the harsh weather over the Memorial Day weekend was being monitored for tropical and subtropical development by the National Hurricane Center (NHC) last week, though it remained a non-tropical low throughout its duration.

Forecasters from the NHC had visited the Carnival Cruise Line headquarters in Miami two days before the ship got caught in the powerful storm.

The area of low pressure has now moved inland over North Carolina and will gradually weaken in the days ahead, but not before dampening more holiday beach plans in parts of the mid-Atlantic and generating dangerous rip currents along the East Coast.

Passengers aboard a Carnival Cruise Line ship experienced a rough return to port in South Carolina as stormy weather brought heavy seas to the region.

Videos posted to social media showed high waves and large white caps rocking the cruise ship Carnival Sunshine as it returned to port in Charleston, South Carolina.

The ship’s return from a the Bahamas had been delayed by the storm, but the dark skies and rough seas remained when the ship approached the port of Charleston.

Horrifying Footage Shows Cruise Ship Battered by 30ft Waves

CruiseMapper logo

New footage inside Royal Caribbean ship which ran into high winds and rough seas in the Atlantic last year has emerged.

The video shows a cruise passenger looking out the window as 30ft waves submerged the vessel during the hurricane force storm.

The ship, Anthem of the Seas , carrying more than 4,500 guests and 1,600 crew members, was heading to Port Canaveral in Florida but was forced to turn back and return to New Jersey due to the rough weather.

It forced frightened passengers into their cabins overnight as their belongings flew about, waves rose as high as 30 feet, and winds howled outside.

In the video that surfaced on Reddit, a passenger is seen leaning against the window saying, 'We're just staying in one place, hoping not to die.'

Four passengers were injured in the storm and the ship was damaged in some of its public areas.

Hurricane-like conditions caused items inside the ship to fly off shelves and smash into one another as the vessel leaned at least 45 degrees off center in the swells.

The cruise line provided a full refund to passengers, as well as a discount for a future cruise.

The trip was originally supposed to be a week-long round-trip from New Jersey to Florida and the Bahamas, but the hurricane-force storm cut the vacation short.

The National Weather Service's Ocean Prediction Center had issued an alert for a strong storm four days in advance and questions were raised as to why the cruise ship travelled through the treacherous conditions.

Royal Caribbean said the ship experienced 'extreme wind and sea conditions' that were not expected.

However it apologized to passengers following the February 7 2016 incident, saying 'we have to do better.'

But in September that year, Anthem of the Seas was caught up in another extreme storm.

Terrifying footage showed the 1,100ft-long Anthem of the Seas undulating through huge swells and 90mph winds en route to Bermuda as it encountered the tropical storm Hermine.

Rogue wave kills navigation system on cruise ship with nearly 400 on board as deadly storm hammers northern Europe

December 22, 2023 / 9:05 AM EST / CBS/AP

A cruise ship in the North Sea was hit by a massive rogue wave, causing a power outage and disabling the vessel's navigation system late on Thursday, Danish authorities said, as a deadly storm brought heavy rain and strong winds across northern Europe overnight and into Friday.

The Norwegian cruise ship MS Maud temporarily lost power on Thursday after encountering the rogue wave. Its operator, Hurtigruten Expedition, said in a statement that the 266 guests and 131 crew were uninjured and that the vessel, initially headed for the English port of Tilbury, would be diverted to Bremerhaven, Germany, for disembarkation.

Danish Search and Rescue said the vessel could "maneuver via emergency systems, and it has two civilian support vessels close by."

Reuters reported that the ship was being towed to Bremerhafen in Germany after the power outage. A spokesperson for the Danish Joint Rescue Coordination Centre told the news agency that a ship from civil rescue firm Esvagt had managed to connect a tow line to the MS Maud.

"An Esvagt ship is towing it slowly towards Bremerhafen in Germany at around 8-9 knots," the spokesperson told Reuters.

On Thursday, high winds also grounded flights in parts of the U.K., suspended train services and stopped Scottish ferries.

Women killed by falling trees

The storm also brought down trees and prompting warnings of flooding on the North Sea coast. A woman in Belgium was fatally injured by a falling Christmas tree, while another tree killed a person in the Netherlands.

The 65-foot Christmas tree collapsed onto three people at a busy market in Oudenaarde in western Belgium late Thursday, killing a 63-year-old woman and injuring two other people. The Christmas market was immediately canceled.

A woman who was struck by a falling tree on Thursday in the eastern Dutch town of Wilp later died of her injuries, her employer said.

Pre-Christmas rail travelers in parts of Germany faced disruption. National railway operator Deutsche Bahn said Friday there were cancellations on routes from Hamburg and Hannover to Frankfurt and Munich, while long-distance services from Hamburg northward to Kiel and Flensburg weren't running, among other disruptions.

The company said that falling trees damaged overhead electric wires or blocked tracks largely in northern Germany, but also in the central state of Hesse.

In Hamburg, the Elbe River flooded streets around the city's fish market, with water waist-high in places. German authorities warned of a storm surge of up to three meters (nearly 10 feet) or more above mean high tide on parts of the North Sea coast on Friday.

Streets around harbors flooded overnight in some Dutch North Sea towns including Scheveningen, the seaside suburb of The Hague.

The huge Maeslantkering storm barrier that protects Rotterdam from high sea levels automatically closed for the first time because of high water levels - meaning that all six major storm barriers that protect the low-lying Netherlands were closed at the same time. The nation's water and infrastructure authority said that was also a first. By Friday morning, all six barriers were open again as winds eased.

Rough seas wave size how big is rough?

What size waves are considered rough seas for a 85,000+ ton ship?

Link to comment

90,000+ Club

Generally, from 0-8 ft...you won't feel much....perhaps some slight movement. When seas get above 10 ft, you WILL feel movement....how much bothers you will depend on you! If seas get above 15 ft....you'll find walking up and down stairs a real feat! I wouldn't want to be on a ship if it gets rougher than that!

Of course, the frequency of the waves (how close together they are) will affect the "roughness" as well!

40,000+ Club

The answer is a bit more complicated than wave height. A ship that size can ride quite well in high waves as long as the ship is headed directly into the waves. A bigger issue is something called "long swells" which are somewhat different from waves and have a bigger impact on large vessels. Swells are usually the result of a distant storm and can make even the largest vessels move in an uncomfortable way (for those that do not like motion). And the tonnage of a ship does not always equate to motion. The highest seas we ever encountered was about 45 foot waves (and swells) caused by a hurricane (Hurricane Bob). Our ship, the old Meridian of Celebrity Lines, which was only 28,000 tons but she did fine in those high seas because she was designed with a deep V hull. Most modern cruise ships are somewhat top heavy with shallow drafts that enable them to get into many ports. Hence, in a strong wind they can become a huge wind vane which creates uncomfortable motion. If you want a ship that is designed for high seas you would probably enjoy the Queen Mary 2. As to most cruise ships, if the wind is blowing and the seas are churning you are going to get a good ride...if you like roller coasters. By the way, if you want to know what can happen to an 88000 ton ship in rough seas take a look at what happened to the Brilliance of the Seas (we love this ship) this week.

jocap

As Hank says, the QM2 is built for rough seas...she's the only liner sailing these days.

We've gone through the Bay of Biscay in tornado style weather, on a "block of flats", and found it quite exciting.....but I cut my teeth crossing the North Sea on old ferries.....

20,000+ Club

Nowadays, in the age of the behemoth ship, 85,000 ton is not all that big of a ship. But, the size of the ship might not make a difference when it comes to waves or swells. I've been on ships smaller than 85,000 ton and they weathered swells of 25 to 30 ft without much movement on the ship. Heck, we saw green water going over the windows on deck 6, but still barely felt nothing. Then I've been on some of the biggest ships out there, and even in relatively low swells, the ship was really rocking and rolling.

Like another poster said, it's more the swells and how a ship hits them rather than just waves that make a sea rough. But I would say that anything over 15 ft on a ship that doesn't handle swells, would give you quite a ride.

And then you have time of year and the sea/ocean you're sailing on. The far North Atlantic can be horrible in late Fall and all of winter. Sailing Drake's Passage, in South America, can be absolutely awful. But in reality, any open water can be rough at any given moment.

250+ Club

I agree with all of the other posts. We were in the North Sea one time (Ireland/Scotland Cruise) and in the middle of the night all of the plates, glasses, etc. flew right off the table. I got up to look to see how bad the waves were and had to hold on to the curtains. It was quite a ride. At least we didn't have to make and effort to roll over in bed.

500+ Club

We were in 7 - 10 footers going across the GOM and could feel it quite a bit. We were in 12 to 15 footers leaving Grand Cayman and could REALLY feel it and see it.

We were in 3 to 5 footers coming back across the GOM home, and couldnt feel it at all.

That was on the Conquest.

Underwatr

On the QM2 we were in ~15 foot waves (following a hurricane) and you could sense movement but it was never unpleasant.

serene56

15 foot waves are not bad on that type of ship. However once you have cruised in 40 foot+ seas than you understand what "rock and roll" really means.

That's all of our live coverage on the conflict for now.

We'll bring you any major developments overnight, and we'll be back with our regular updates in the morning.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he is "deeply grateful" for Joe Biden's decision to prioritise air defence deliveries for Ukraine.

The Ukrainian president said his country was in critical need of the capabilities to protect its cities and civilians from Russian attacks.

"The partnership between Ukraine and the United States is strong and unwavering. Together, we are protecting life against terror and aggression," he added.

It comes after the US said a recent defence pact signed by Russia and North Korea was a "cause for concern".

The recently signed defence pact between Russia and North Korea is a cause of concern but is no surprise, the White House has said.

Speaking to reporters, White House spokesman John Kirby said the agreement between the two countries was a sign of Russia's desperation for foreign assistance in the Ukraine war.

The deal has seen both countries vow to help each other if they faced armed aggression, and replaces previous treaties between the countries.

Russia said the pact was needed because of "the deep evolution of the geopolitical situation in the world and the region".

Mr Kirby also said the US would reprioritise planned deliveries of foreign military equipment to go to Ukraine, which is in "desperate need" of more air defence capabilities.

Vladimir Putin has warned that South Korea would be making a "big mistake" if it decides to supply weapons to Ukraine.

The Russian president's comments come after South Korea said a new defence agreement between North Korea and Moscow was "absurd" and it would reconsider sending arms to Kyiv as a result.

Mr Putin said Seoul had nothing to worry about when it came to the mutual defence pact.

Russian state media quoted him as saying that Moscow expected its cooperation with North Korea to serve as a deterrent to the West.

He also refused to rule out supplying high-precision weapons to the country.

Russia is considering making changes to its nuclear weapons doctrine, Vladimir Putin has said.

The Russian president made the comments while speaking to reporters at the end of his Vietnam trip.

The existing doctrine states that Russia may use such weapons in response to a nuclear strike or in the event of a conventional attack that poses an existential threat to the country.

Ukrainian troops have been launching mid-range reconnaissance drones in Kharkiv.

Russian forces crossed into parts of the northeastern region last month, and officials claim they have seized at least a dozen villages.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Kyiv's forces are gradually pushing Russian troops out of the contested area.

A police search is under way for a woman who allegedly desecrated the graves of Ukrainian soldiers.

Kyiv city's prosecutor's office said the unknown woman vandalised the graves this morning.

Commemorative plaques and lamps were torn off and broken, it said.

The Ukrainian flag was also "mutilated", it added.

"Operational investigations and searches are being carried out to establish the woman's identity," the office said in post on Telegram.

If caught and found guilty, the woman could face up to five years in prison.

We have been reporting today on Vladimir Putin's visit to Vietnam.

Here is a recap of what the Russian president has been up to:

  • Mr Putin signed a series of deals with his Vietnamese counterpart To Lam during his state visit;
  • The two leaders signed agreements to further co-operation on education, science and technology, oil and gas exploration and health;
  • They also agreed to work on a road map for a nuclear science and technology centre in Vietnam;
  • Following the talks, Mr Putin said that the two countries share an interest in "developing a reliable security architecture" in the Asia-Pacific region based on not using force and peacefully settling disputes with no room for "closed military-political blocs";
  • The Russian leader also met Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh and is scheduled to meet Communist Party general secretary Nguyen Phu Trong - Vietnam's most powerful politician;
  • The trip has resulted in a sharp rebuke from the US embassy in the country.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Romania's decision to provide his country with two Patriot air defence systems will strengthen security in Ukraine and throughout Europe.

"This crucial contribution will bolster our air shield and help us better protect our people and critical infrastructure from Russian air terror," the Ukrainian president said on X.

The Patriot, which stands for Phased Array Tracking Radar for Intercept on Target, is a surface-to-air missile defence system.

For months now, Ukraine has been calling for countries to provide more air defence systems to help protect it from Russian attacks.
