7 Road Trip Outfits to Look Cute and Be Comfortable

Getting ready for an upcoming getaway and wondering what to wear on a road trip ? Take the guesswork out of that question and use my guide for comfort and style while traveling by car. Plus, I’m sharing 7 road trip outfits that will help you stay comfy while looking cute!

Our family has taken so many road trips and I’ve definitely learned what works for road trips and also what you don’t want to wear! Hint, avoid any pants that have buttons on the back pockets!

Dressing For Comfort When Driving Long Distances

Long-distance traveling means spending lots of time sitting in one seat with little to no wiggle room. All the more reason to make sure you are dressing comfortable and able to enjoy the ride.

Where Are You Going? Know Your Destination & Purpose

Deciding what to wear for your journey should be the very next objective after getting your travel plans in order. Once you know where you’re going and what you’ll be doing, you can then think about the attire to wear on the way. I personally dress more “beachy” when my family and I are headed toward the ocean. If going to the mountains, I seem to go for the cardigans and my year-round boots.

Overall, know where you are going and what you will be doing there. Keep in mind any stops on the way as well. If you’re planning to stop for a hike or a dip in a lake along the route, plan for that when choosing your outfit for the day. Plus, you might want to have a pair of boots or flip-flops in the back for easy access at your stop. We often keep a duffel bag or day bag at the ready with stuff we might need for stops along the way.

How Long Will You Be In Car

Going hand-in-hand with knowing where you’re going, it’s also a good idea to calculate the amount of time you’ll be spending in the car. Don’t forget to calculate the stops you plan to take and consider where those will be.

Whether you’ll be doing a lot of sightseeing along the way or stopping at lots of rest stops, you’ll want to be properly dressed. Chances are for long periods of time, the more comfortable you’ll want to dress.

How Cute Do You Have To Be When You Get There?

I know I’m not the only one that has ever asked this question, that’s why I wanted to address it. There are a couple of ways to approach being cute upon arrival. Of course, it all depends on where you’re going, but overall, it’s a personal choice. After long hours in a car no one can expect to look completely cute. :)

If you’re going straight to your hotel room or beach rental at the end of the day, then perhaps lounge attire will do. However, if you’re rolling into town and immediately having dinner at a nice restaurant, you may want to consider a glow-up pit stop and outfit change before arriving at your final destination.

Start With Shoes And Build Up for Your Perfect Comfy Road Trip Outfit

Every gal knows it’s about the shoes. A complete outfit can change because of them, and that’s why I recommend starting with them in order to put together your cozy road trip outfits.

What Makes Comfy Travel Shoes?

When it comes to comfort and travel, think in terms of lightweight, not too tight, breathable, and easy to take on and off. Although you’ll be doing a lot of sitting and making occasional pit stops, you don’t want your feet to be uncomfortable at all.

If you’ll be tag-teaming the driving, I recommend a shoe that won’t get stuck under the pedal (like flip flops) or won’t make the driving uncomfortable overall.

In some instances, you may want to consider keeping a couple of pairs of shoes on hand: one pair for driving and the other for riding. And as I mentioned above, if you’re making any activity stops along the way you might want to pack a change of shoes in the back within easy reach.

Stylish Walking Sandals for Travel

Sandals can be quite comfy when traveling in the car. The plus side is they give your feet the ability to breathe and if you find your ideal pair, they’ll provide good support as well. There are many different types of sandals so it all depends on where you’re traveling to and what you’ll be doing.

Also keep in mind that some sandals might not be comfortable or safe to drive in, so as I said before you may want to keep a closed-toe slip-on shoe on hand if you’re driving and swap into your sandals when you’re the passenger.

The KEEN Women’s Whisper Sandal ( Zappos , Amazon ) is ideal for adventurous travels and destinations. It’s extremely popular with travelers as you can drive, hike, and even swim in them! While the classic Birkenstock Sandal ( Zappos , Amazon ) is more for fashion with a touch of comfort. I’m also a big fan of Sanuk sling sandals ( Zappos , Amazon ) with their yoga mat soles.

Slip-ons are ideal because they are easy on the foot and… well, they slip-on . This makes it easier when traveling with family and having to get in and out of the car often. I’ve started making my girls wear slip-on shoes only when we’re on a road trip.

Slip-on shoes come in a variety of styles and support levels and are some of the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn! A few good ones for traveling by car (especially long drives) are:

  • Sketchers Go Walk ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Vionic Beach Malibu ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Vans Classic ComfyCush Slip-On ( Zappos , Amazon )

Ballet Shoes for Travel

Another type of slip on shoes that can be great to wear on a road trip when you want to look cute are ballet shoes. These style of flats are casual but can pair well with a travel dress or cute road trip outfit.

Some of my favorite flat ballet shoes that are stylish and comfortable include BOBS by Sketchers ( Zappos , Amazon ( other colors ) this is more of a slip-on but you can find cute styles that made me put it under this category. And they’re super comfortable and easy to get on and off.

For a more traditional ballet shoe for traveling, check out the Lucky Brand Emmie ( Zappos , Amazon ), ECCO Ballerina ( Zappos , Amazon ), Vionic Minna ( Zappos , Amazon ), Anne Klein Tamara ( Zappos , Amazon ), Dansko Kira ( Zappos , Amazon ), or Aerosoles Homerun ( Zappos , Amazon ).

Comfortable Ankle Boots for Travel

If you’re planning to travel when the weather is a little cooler you might want to wear some boots. But remember that you want to keep your footwear lightweight and comfortable for a long trip, ankle boots are a good option. Most hiking boots tie, but ankle boots are often pull on or have side zippers, making them easy to put on and take off.

  • Arcopedico L8 Boot ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Born Kerri ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Minnetonka Hi-Top ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Clarks Adella Cove ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Clarks Adreena Hope ( Zappos , Amazon )

Cute and Comfy Tennis Shoes

Of course, you can’t go wrong with a good tennis shoe for comfort, but depending on your car ride you may want to strongly consider another option. Oftentimes, tennis shoes/sneakers/runners can cause your feet to sweat and may not provide much comfort if your feet swell during your long travels.

With the various styles available today, you can get a pair of tennis shoes that don’t quite look like you’re headed to the gym, yet keep your feet comfy and supported. Tennis shoes with mesh are also a top pick because they allow your feet to breathe.

Keep in mind that if you want to take off your shoes during the drive, you’ll have to deal with re-tieing them at each stop if you don’t get a no-tie version. A few styles I love to wear on a road trip are:

  • adidas Cloudform Pure ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Vionic Beach Pismo ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Nike Tanjun ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Taos Star Burst ( Zappos , Amazon )
  • Brooks Ghost 13 ( Zappos , Amazon )

What are the Best Pants for Traveling?

Now that we’ve talked about shoes, let’s talk about what to put on those legs.

Leggings and Jeggings: The Ultimate Road Trip Wear

Hands down, I believe leggings and jeggings are some of the best clothes for road trips. Why? For starters, they come in so many different colors and styles, it’s impossible to list and name them all. Secondly, they can be paired with anything. And lastly, I have yet to come across a pair that wasn’t comfortable.

It seems the biggest choices are between the color you want to wear and if it has some extras, such as the side pocket for your cell phone. And if you don’t like tight leggings, you can also find some looser yoga pants that are super comfortable.

My teenage daughter has gotten me hooked on aerie leggings . They’re super soft and don’t have a see-through fabric issue! Plus they make versions that have a phone pocket which can be super helpful when traveling. Of course, lululemon leggings are definitely considered the premium brand of leggings and look great on most body types.

Jeggings are also an option if you’re trying to avoid bulky jeans but still not look like you’re wearing leggings. You can find jeggings at most of your favorite stores like Old Navy , Target, and American Eagle.

Best Pants for Travel

One of my favorite things to wear on a long flight is outdoor pants. I really like these hiking pants from Columbia . But I’ve also found these pants from Prana to be ideal for travel! They both seem to be great adventure-ready clothes for stops along the way. They are so comfortable but also depending on the color and type of top you pair it with you can make them pass as cuter and a little dressier than leggings.

If you’re planning for a summer road trip, you might be tempted to wear shorts on your trip. A couple of words of caution about wearing shorts, 1) they can often bunch up on the seat and if you have leather seats you might stick to the seat which will be uncomfortable. 2) often you’ll want to keep the AC on in the car if it’s hot outside, so if you’re wearing shorts you may get cold. Of course, if you run hot then shorts are probably a great choice for you!

Should You Wear Pajamas for a Road Trip?

I vote a strong no on wearing pajamas for your next road trip simply because there are so many pajama-like outfits that would be just a comfortable, yet casual and cute. There’s also the times when you’ll be getting out of the car to check out something along your journey or stopping for a break. Chances are you’d be a lot more confident when you’re not wearing your PJ’s.

Instead, opt in for a cute loungewear set, or even just leggings, a tee, and a soft cardigan.

Cute, Comfy Travel Outfit Sets For A Road Trip

As an alternative to wearing your PJs on a road trip, wearing a cute yoga outfit or loungewear set can make for a super comfortable ride. And these days leisurewear seems to be making a comeback with even tracksuit sets available.

Keep in mind if you’re traveling when it’s hot you might want to make sure the material is comfortable and breathable. Rompers are also super cute and comfy, and they’re popular and easy to find. Just make sure they’re a pull-on/off style and not button-up. You don’t want to deal with buttons when you’re making a pit stop.

7 Road Trip Outfits

I used some of the clothes and shoes I’ve mentioned to create these road trip outfit ideas. Each of them pairs a comfortable piece of clothing together to look cute.

If you get cold or hot easily, you might want to look for organic cotton options for your clothing. It’s a sustainable material and great options for temperature regulation.

Comfy And Cute Road Trip T-Shirt Ideas

If you plan on going on a long road trip, you need to know what to pack and wear throughout the journey. It’s important to pack the right clothes for the different types of weather you’ll experience. Whether it’s raining, chilly, hot, or humid, you’ll have everything you need to feel your best on your road trip. T-shirts can be great for layering so you can pair them with a cozy cardigan or jacket.

Comfortable Loose Fitting T-Shirts to Feel Good Wherever You Go

When you want to feel comfortable wherever you’re going and whatever you’re doing, order some comfortable loose-fitting t-shirts. Two of my favorite places to buy cozy, loose tees are from prAna and aerie . You’ll find these comfortable, fashionable shirts are available in various colors.

Tees will go with just about any bottoms, including jeggings, shorts, hiking pants, and leggings! And you can also buy some tees with long sleeves if you get cool in the car.

Cute Custom Graphic Tees From Etsy to Stay Fashionable

Make a fashion statement on your road trip while wearing cute custom graphic tees from Etsy . You can get a special cute t-shirt custom designed by artists. For example, if you’re doing a road trip as a bachelor party celebration, you may want custom shirts for each person to wear, including the bride, maid of honor, and bridesmaids. In addition to Etsy, you can also find cute road trip graphic tees at Jane.com.

Trip Wear Dresses

Wrinkle free wrap around dresses.

When planning to make a stop to have a night of fun at a bar, club, or restaurant, having a wrinkle-free wrap-around dress to wear is ideal. These dresses allow you to have a chic look while staying comfortable. Wearing a dress is also very convenient for pitstops along the road!

A few of my favorite travel dresses are:

  • Janey Foundation Dress from prAna
  • Kosan Go Travel Dress
  • Women’s Maxi Dress from Columbia
  • Short-Sleeve Wrap Dress from Gap
  • Pack-and-Go Dress from Orvis

Layering Clothes For Car Travel and Weather

You can’t go wrong with packing a few tank tops to wear. They’re perfect to have when traveling during the hot weather. Tank tops go with everything, including shorts, pants, and even skirts. No matter what you plan to wear on your legs, you can pair it with a tank top!

Cotton T’s

Keep it cozy and comfortable with cotton t-shirts. You’ll find a massive selection of cotton t-shirts at some of your favorite stores in lots of unique colors. Tees can be great for layering with a cardigan or sweatshirt.

Sweat Jackets

If it starts getting chilly, you’ll be glad that you packet a sweatshirt to wear. The great thing about a “sweat jacket” is that it can be zipped closed and you don’t have to deal with pulling it over your head. Most sweat jackets come with a hood attached, which is perfect for protecting your hair when it’s raining outside. Hoodies also work great for blocking out sound and light when you’re trying to sleep in the car!

When you’re wearing a tank top or t-shirt, you can easily pair it with a cardigan. The cardigan will keep you warm when it’s just a bit chilly. Just like sweatshirts and t-shirts, cardigans are available in many colors and styles. Cardigans are a great alternative to sweatshirts to help you look cute. They also pair well with travel dresses!

Outerwear for Long Car Rides

If you’re going on a long car ride with cold weather, don’t forget to add some outerwear to your winter packing list . You’ll want a warm coat, hat, and gloves. When you’re traveling where it’s sunny, don’t forget to pack a hat to help block sunlight from your face. You can also consider packing a rain jacket or denim jacket if you’re traveling during the spring or summer.

What Not To Wear on a Road Trip

When you’re going on a road trip, never wear anything that makes you feel uncomfortable. If it’s too tight or doesn’t fit right, leave it at home. If you don’t like the way jeans make you feel, don’t bring them. The goal is to pack items that are lightweight and comfortable to ensure that you feel great during your trip.

The main things I won’t wear on a road trip are jeans (unless it’s a very short car ride), shoes that tie, and any undergarments that are uncomfortable. Ladies, make sure you’re wearing your most comfortable bras when you’re heading out on a road trip!

For me, comfort is the #1 thing to keep in mind when planning what to wear on a road trip. No matter how long you’re spending in the car – you just can’t go wrong with comfy! Keep in mind all the tips I said above, find a great pair of shoes, pair it with some great pants, and then keep in mind layering when you’re planning your tops. Now you’re ready to hit the open road!

@claire_most in the car wearing white long-sleeve top and blue striped pants

Don’t get me wrong—I love jet-setting away to a new destination on the other side of the planet, but sometimes all you need is a low-key road trip to keep you going during the summer. Of course, when you’re spending a number of hours crammed into a car with your friends, packing the right road trip outfits can easily fall on the lackluster side, leading you to opt for easy loungewear. However, if you plan on making a few stops along the way to your final destination, why not take your personal style along for the ride?

I love keeping it local in the summertime and have figured out the perfect comfortable formulas to wear on the road. (I also have the perfect snack list, but I'll keep the subject to clothes today.) From polished matching sets to a sporty moment with track pants, these looks will both ensure you look good for every stop and have you feeling comfortable on the long journey.

The 20 Must-Have Road Trip Essentials

Best Road Trip Essentials 0 Hero

By: Tim Huber Published: Aug 24, 2023

When it comes to travel, it’s often less about the destination itself and more about the journey to arriving there, and this is especially true with road trips. And one way to maximize the comfort, entrainment, organization, and overall enjoyment of your time out on  the open road  is to be equipped with the right gear. With this grand American tradition existing since the creation of the U.S. Interstate Highway System after World War II, manufacturers have had decades to develop equipment catering to the unique wants and needs of those traveling by motor vehicle, which you can now benefit from if you’re planning on hitting the road.

While this has resulted in some great gear over the years, it’s also given way to an incredibly oversaturated market, rife with outdated offerings and inferior imitation products. So, to ensure you gear-up with the right equipment and get your travel firing on all cylinders, we’ve rounded up today’s best purpose-built gear for road trips and touring, as well as a few other quality pieces of kit that just happen to lend themselves particularly well to on the  road travel  to bring you this guide to the best road trip essentials.

How we chose our roadtrip essentials.

Packing for a road trip can be a bit tricky, as your route, stops, destination, and even the season and time of year will also massively impact the type of gear that you should be bringing. With that said, there are a few road trip gear staples that are solid choices no matter where you platoon traveling. Below, we’ll briefly outline some of the most important traits to consider when purchasing road trip essentials.

Size & Weight: No matter what type of gear you’re considering, you should always consider the size and weight of any item. This is particularly important considering that cars have limited storage space, and excessively heavy gear will not only impact vehicle performance, but will also hinder fuel economy.

Function & Utility: Any item brought on a road trip should possess a clear function or utility. With that said, due to the limited space offered by cars, we always recommend seeking out items that serve more than one function — such as a jump starter with a built-in power bank and flashlight.

Versatility: When purchasing a piece of gear for a road trip, it’s always wise to consider possible second and even third uses for an item, as a general air of versatility will generally increase the overall value and bang for your buck of any product.

Convenience & Preparedness: More specifically, pieces of gear brought on road trips should all tick at least one of two boxes in the form of convenience and/or preparedness. No matter the item, if it doesn’t bolster either of these two areas, it probably isn’t worth bringing along.

Durability & Materials: No matter what you’re shopping for, the materials used to craft any product will play a monumental role in its overall quality and durability, making a piece of gear’s construction and materials an essential area to review when acquiring gear before hitting the open road.

Scepter Military Style Water Container

Why It Made The Cut

  • A rugged 5-gallon vessel for potable water with a rugged high-density polyethylene construction & spill-proof spout.

Best Water Storage: It’s always advised to travel with extra water, should you get stuck roadside for a prolonged period on a scorching summer day (or should you need to top off a radiator or clean a cut). This particular military-inspired, jerry can-style vessel stores five gallons and, in addition to being clearly labeled for potable water, is adorned in a light blue finish for the purpose of being easier to distinguish from traditional red gasoline fuel cells. Weighing only 3.6lbs when empty, this item’s high-density polyethylene construction (and spill-proof spout) make it ideal for strapping to an external rack or jerry can holder, though with a compact 13.3″ x 7.3″ x 18.3″ footprint, it can also easily be stashed away in the trunk or behind a seat.

Construction: HDPE Volume: 5 Gallons

Matador Pocket Blanket

  • A pocketable sub-4oz waterproof PU-coated nylon blanket that opens up to a 63” x 44” form.

Best Car Blanket: When you’ve been driving through the night, or have just had a long day out on the road and need to catch a few Z’s, it’s inevitable that you’ll probably wind up catching some shuteye at a rest-stop. And few items will help you recharge your batteries better — or more importantly, more comfortably — than a blanket, and this highly compact item from Matador is the perfect throw for car travel. Fitting into an included pouch that you can fit in the palm of your hand and expanding to 63” L x 44” W when opened, this puncture-resistant  camp-style blanket  is made from a fully waterproof PU-coated nylon. Weighing under 4oz, it also features weighted corners and integrated corner stakes, should you get the urge to pull over for a roadside picnic.

Primary Construction: PU-Coated Nylon Unpacked Size: 63” x 44” Weight: 3.8oz

Stanley The Quencher H2 0 Flowstate Tumbler

  • A dishwasher-safe doubled-walled tumbler with an included straw that’s made from recycled 18/8 stainless steel.

Best Tumbler: Stopping off for refreshments has always been a part of the American road trip tradition, and this 30oz mug from Stanley is designed to enhance that experience. Offered in an enormous slew of different color options, the mug features a three-position screw-down lid with a built-in reusable straw, supplemented by a regular pour spout. Dishwasher safe, the mug boasts stainless steel, double-walled,  vacuum-insulated construction , enabling it to keep your hot drinks hot or cold drinks cold for hundreds of miles in-between fill-ups. The bottom third of the mug’s diameter is also reduced, enabling it to fit in most cupholders.

Primary Construction: Recycled 18/8 Stainless Steel Volume: 30oz Weight: 1.1lbs

Rand McNally 2023 Road Atlas

  • The latest edition of Rand McNally’s expansive North American road atlas that contains over 350 cities and 25 national parks.

Best Road Atlas: With the rise of  smartphones  and GPS, cartography and traditional printed maps are increasingly going the way of the dodo. And while this makes sense, we’d still argue that it’s well worth the investment to arm yourself with a proper printed map if you plan on doing any extended touring. Should your phone break, die, or simply not have service, this 144-page road atlas is the most up-to-date iteration, and includes an enormous array of easy-to-read maps, including that of 350 cities and more than two dozen US National Parks, as well as detailed maps of each individual US state and a robust highway network map. This spiral-bound road-guide also boasts an unabridged index and contact information for construction information and weather conditions.

Size: 10.875″ x 15.375″ National Parks: 25 Cities: 350

Aeropress Go Travel Coffee Press

  • A super compact and super easy-to-use mobile coffee press with an 8oz capacity.

Best Mobile Coffee Maker: Traditionally, spending time exploring the country’s highway network has meant being at the mercy of whatever gas station coffee happens to be available on hand, though the AeroPress changes that, enabling its user to brew up 1-3 fresh cups off hot coffee in around a minute’s time (or cold brew coffee is approximately two minutes). The entire setup breaks down and neatly fits inside the system’s  coffee mug , including the travel filter case, which can hold 20 of the 350 free paper micro-filters that come free with the kit. Incredibly compact and lightweight, this on-the-go coffee system also lends itself incredibly well to backpacking or camping.

Primary Construction: Polypropylene & Food-Grade Silicone Liquid Capacity: 8oz Weight: 11.5oz

Stemple Creek Ranch Beef Jerky 3 Pack

  • A three-pack of gourmet jerky made by a 4th-generation California ranch using only 4 ingredients in total.

Best Road Trip Snack: While part of the fun of a road trip comes from stopping off at gas stations and truck stops in random flyover towns to stock up on snacks, it’s never a bad idea to bringing along a few basic sustenance staples like trail mix or beef jerky. Available here in packs of 3 or six, the Stemple Creek Ranch Beef Jerky is a gourmet snack made by a fourth-generation ranch in Tomales, California, and is comprised of only 4 ingredients — three of which are salt, pepper, and pasture-raised grass-fed beef. You may have noticed this jerky is markedly more expensive than your average gas station jerky, though you really do get what you pay for here, as the taste and overall quality of Stemple Creek Ranch’s dry jerky really is next-level.

Origin: California Included Packs: 3 Meat: Grass-Fed Pasture-Raised Beef

Sea to Summit DeltaLight Camp Set 2 Point 2

  • An all-in-one prep and eating camp set comprised of a pair of bows, insulated mugs, and cutlery sets.

Best Cook Set: Whether you’re exploring the backwoods or the backroads, a proper camp mess set is an essential piece of gear to possess on any adventure, road trips included. This two-person dinnerware set includes a pair of cups, bowls, and two cutlery sets. Microwave and dishwasher safe and BPA free, the set is made from lightweight glass-reinforced polypropylene, neoprene, and EU food-grade silicone. And, like the AeroPress, this entire set is of the nestling variety, conveniently breaking down and fitting inside itself before slipping into an included nylon storage pouch. Furthermore, the whole thing is designed to fit inside Sea to Summit’s 2.7L Alpha and Sigma camp pots, should you also be in need of camp kitchenware, too.

Primary Construction: Glass-Reinforced Polypropylene & Food-Grade Silicone Weight: 14.4oz Included Items: 2 bowls; 2 insulated mugs; & 2 cutlery sets

Adventure Medical Kits Smart Travel FAK

  • A robust 69-item FAK that tips the scales at just over 1lb.

Best First Aid Kit: The very nature of road trips often means spending time on remote and desolate roadways, and anytime that you’re a considerable distance from trained medical intervention, it’s best to bring along a  solid first aid kit . Designed to treat a diverse area of potential injuries often sustained while traveling, this kit from leading FAK brand, Adventure Medical Kits contains a plethora of medications and basic medical supplies — all neatly organized in a zippered, trifold nylon case. Just as important is this kit’s included “Comprehensive Guide to Wilderness & Travel Medicine” booklet, teaching how to perform impromptu procedures and treatments while in the field.

Best Road Trip Pants: Finding clothing that’s conducive to road trip applications primarily comes down to comfort, and while you could opt for a loungewear-based getup, there’s something less-than-dignified about rolling up midday  in sweatpants . Enter: Prana’s Hybridizer jogger, a pair of relaxed-fitting, draw-string pants that offer pajama-comparable comfort levels in a more presentable (yet still decidedly casual) package. Made of a moisture-wicking, quick-drying, stretchy, breathable, and lightweight performance fabric, these pants also lend themselves particularly well to outdoor recreational activities in between stints behind the wheel, with a zippered pocket for keeping crucial items secure while on the trail, and elastic leg openings that can be rolled up to beat the heat or water crossings.

Cobra HHRT50 Road Trip CB Radio

  • A 40-channel car-specific CB radio that comes with an included magnetic-mounting roof antenna.

Best CB Radio: While smartphone technology has rapidly evolved over the last decade, those who spend more time on the US highway system than anyone else: truckers, tend to still rely on the use of a traditional citizen band (or CB) radio. For those seeking a bit more order in their organizing, Smittybilt’s seat cover is a fantastic option, transforming the bare surface behind your seat with well-over a square foot (14” H x 11” W) of MOLLE webbing. Traveling in Style: What to Wear on a Road Trip

Updated on: Nov 16, 2022

Regardless of the time of year, it's road trip season! Whether you're traveling to the Cape, across the Blue Ridge Mountains, or cruising along the Pacific coast, the wide-open road awaits you. Road trips are all about experiencing the world, deviating from the beaten path, and allowing adventure to lead the way. While road trips are meant to be spontaneous and have a “go with the flow” attitude to them, that doesn’t mean your wardrobe has to. In fact, we recommend planning out your road trip clothing so that you’re sure you have everything you need and can travel in style — no matter what the road may bring. Here are some pointers for what to wear on a road trip, so that you can focus on having fun rather than what to wear.

Tips for Choosing What to Wear on a Road Trip

Put an emphasis on comfort.

When it comes down to what to wear on a long car ride, these trips typically require spending a significant amount of time in a single seat with little to no legroom. All the more incentive to dress comfortably in your road trip clothes, so you can relax and enjoy the voyage.

Map Out Your Trip

After organizing arrangements and getting all of your plans in place, the next goal is deciding how to dress for your journey. After all, you can only decide on what to wear on a road trip after knowing where you're going and what you'll be doing. For example, if you're going to the beach, make sure to pack your bathing suit and flip-flops. Don’t forget your beanie and cardigans if you're heading to the mountains.

If you don’t know specifically what you’ll be doing on your trip, consider the climate of your destination. You should also keep in mind any rest stops along the journey. If you're going to stop for a walk or a swim in a lake along the way, keep that in mind while packing your wardrobe.

In addition, you may want to have a pair of boots or flip-flops in the rear of the car for convenient access (and a quick way to accessorize your roadtrip clothing) when you arrive at your destination. After all, you never know what adventures await you on your journey! It's also a good idea to calculate how much time you'll spend in the car, which goes hand in hand with knowing where you're going.

You'll want to be appropriately (yet still stylishly) clothed, whether while sightseeing or filling up gas. Here are a few tips for seasonal picks and must-have items for your next road trip.

Spring into Summer Road Trip Outfits

Pack a tank top.

A tank top is ideal for warm summer days when you want to feel cool while looking hot! A super-comfy tank top makes you feel light and airy, making it the perfect travel companion. You can wear it with a pair of brightly colored jeans or simply some comfy leggings, and you'll be ready to go! You can spruce up your summer trip outfit with a stylish cardigan, which will add just the appropriate amount of charm to your overall ensemble. Check out UNIONBAY’s collection of women's tops to find your perfect fit.

Comfy Trip Outfits for Any Season

Don't skip the leggings and joggers.

Leggings and joggers can be the perfect travel companions, especially black leggings, which work with practically any top or sweater. Combine your leggings or joggers with a loose-fitting tank or t-shirt for a casual look, or add a jacket or coat for a striking finish to complete the ensemble. A patterned piece always adds a nice touch to an all-black ensemble. Browse UNIONBAY’s collection of women’s bottoms to find your new favorite pair.

The Ultimate Cute Road Trip Outfits

Overalls and shortalls.

Overalls aren’t just comfy, they’re also simply adorable. Wear the classic straight-leg overalls or go for the cinched waist shortall for some added flair. Additionally, you can pull off an adventurer look by pairing overalls with a cute crossbody purse and some aviator sunglasses! This outfit will ensure that your camera is ready for any stop you make along the road. For a truly adorable road trip outfit, you can’t go wrong with overalls for women .

Fall & Winter Road Trip Outfits

Sweaters and boots.

There's nothing like taking a road trip on your winter break or driving out to see the changing leaves in the fall. Choose a puffy woolen sweater that does the job on chilly days so you can cuddle up and keep warm. Loose and cozy sweaters and cardigans are classic staples that should be in every girl's closet. You can add a splash of color with a vibrant purse or a charming hair clip. To complete the winter road trip look, combine sweaters for women with dark jeans or a pair of leggings.

UNIONBAY: Take to the Roads in Comfort and Style

Road trip season is every season, which means you’ll always have options when choosing what to wear on a road trip. Whether you're embarking on an adventure into the mountains for some downhill skiing or packing up the VW for a trip to the beach, UNIONBAY has the best road trip styles. Browse through the collection today or check out our clearance for the best deals on your new favorite pieces!

1-2 fitness type tops for the Utah and Rafting part of your trip. Choose quick dry fabrics from workout brands or moisture wicking from outdoor brands. The above is my current favorite top for hiking and working out on the go. It’s ultra-light and super breathable. I recommend hand-washing it as the fabric is a bit thin.

3 additional sightseeing tops to suit your taste and weather. Make sure they mix and match and can be layered as you encounter cooler temperatures. Select classic, versatile pieces that can be worn in US cities, Mexico towns, and by the beach.

Shop Eddie Bauer:  Sizes XS-XXL  |  Petite S-L  |  Tall M-XXL  |  Plus 2X-3X

1 pair of jeans that can be worn everywhere including national parks for short day hikes or in the evenings. Go with a class color such as traditional dark blue so it can easily be dressed up in the cities as needed.

1 travel pants are the most practical use in national parks for long day treks. Something like my favorite travel pants shown above may also be used for rafting since they’re quick dry and can also be dressed up with cute flats or even heels.

1 shorts/capris  that are a style and length suitable to your personal preferences and are a neutral color that can be worn everywhere.

Find out why our readers rate these as the best pants for travel !

prAna Cantine Dress

3 dresses including one long or one maxi skirt if you prefer separates. Summer dresses and classic shift dresses like the one shown above in comfortable light fabrics such as cotton and rayon.

You can easily dress this up with heels for Vegas or dress it down with flats or sandals in Mexico or US cities. Make sure you have a modest option that can be worn in Campeche and Merida) and a versatile but easily dressy option for Vegas.

usa-southwest-road-trip

Vionic Rest Kirra Sandal

1 pair of sandals are essential for US cities and Mexico when you can expect warm weather. The ones shown above are a terrific style because they’re technically “comfort” sandals but look cute enough to be paired with one of your dresses by the sea or to create a cute but casual outfit.

Here are comfortable walking sandals that are stylish, too!

usa-southwest-road-trip

Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 33

1 Trainers/Tennis Shoes

1 trainers (tennis shoes) will be sufficient for many of the hikes in Utah unless you plan to do intense multi-day trekking. Depending on your style you can even dress them up to be worn in the cities when it’s too cool to wear sandals.

They’ll also keep your feet happy in Disneyland standing all day. I am loving the above Nike style because it has more cushioning than the Nike Free styles, it’s packable, and very lightweight.

usa-southwest-road-trip

Skechers Go Walk 4 Charcoal Comfortable Sneakers

1 pair of flats is a great choices for walking in cities and towns in Mexico. I like a pair like the ones shown above because it has “comfort” features yet has a stylish design that is LA and New York appropriate. (If the weather is going to be moderate to cold on the beginning of your trip, switch these for ankle boots.)

These are our tried and tested reader recommendations for the world’s best travel shoes !

usa-southwest-road-trip

Columbia Arcadia Ii Waterproof Breathable Jacket

1 windproof/ rainproof Jacket with hood. A water resistant exterior shell like the one shown above is essential for Utah but it does depend on the weather in the National Parks. It’s good to have protection from the elements should the wind pick up or as the temperature drops at night. I’ve wore a leather jacket plus hoodie on lighter day hikes paired with jeans. This works if you’re driving up to some monuments versus trekking for several hours.

1 Warm Layer such as the ones shown below. Choose a versatile hoodie (or fleece ) that can be be layered with your rainproof jacket.

usa-southwest-road-trip

Military Anorak Jacket with Hood Drawstring

Light Jacket

1 light jacket for US cities and Mexico. Drops in weather is very common in this part of the US: it’s warm in the day and colder at night. You’ll want to pair this piece with your hoodie for San Francisco (unless it’s raining then wear the rainproof jacket).

This jacket should also work in LA, Disney, and New York (layered over the hoodie as needed). A suggested style is a denim or military style anorak.

usa-southwest-road-trip

Body Glove Smoothies Bikini Top

Bathing Suits

1-2 bathing suits  for Vegas pools, rafting, and beaches in Mexico

For the Rafting Trip, I suggest double checking with rafting company for the most accurate clothing suggestions although I’d imagine the travel pants plus fitness top and rain jacket might work?

A fun idea for your USA Southwest road trip is renting a Jucy Campervan, which can accommodate up to four people. It has everything and the kitchen sink! Read my review here.

America's Second-Coolest City Is In North Dakota

7 hikes in tennessee better than the great smokies, 7 art towns in america that come alive in the fall.

Who doesn't love a good road trip ? There's nothing like having the windows open with a steady breeze billowing in, the radio going with something catchy and sing-along, and your best pals alongside you unless it's a solo trip, which is relaxing and thrilling at the same time. Regardless of who's in the passenger seat (or if it happens to be  you  in the passenger seat), there's one thing that so many of us struggle to get correct: the proper attire for long-distance road trips.

How is this possible, though? How could something so seemingly simple trip road-trippers up to the point where halfway through, they get an uncomfortable jeans crease or shoes that feel as though they're squeezing the life out of our feet? If it's a seasonal trip , somehow the car's heat always makes a 20-degree day feel like the middle of the summer and if it's a summer trip, the car's AC always makes it feel like the dead of winter. Will we ever be able to counteract the weather inside of our own vehicles, or is the art of road trip attire just something we need to admit defeat in? Not today, and not ever, with these helpful tips for your next road trip.

Important: Dress In Light Layers

This means starting with a tank top, then a long-sleeved shirt or t-shirt, and then finally a sweatshirt, cardigan, or light jacket. The rule of thumb is to never keep your winter jacket on in the car because it'll just end up getting thrown off once the car heats up. When this happens, you'll have at least two layers to work with and if all else fails and you can't get comfortable, you can leave a layer off or put one back on.

Sneakers Are In These Days And Flats Aren't Nearly As Comfortable As They Once Were

It's a fact that we need to face: There is nothing out there that will ever be more comfortable than sneakers for driving. Flip-flops are unreliable and slightly dangerous and flats only make us question whether or not our feet will ever be the right shape to fit in them without aching at the end of the day.

Related:  20 Essential Things To Pack For In A Road Trip Kit

Sandals are okay but could eventually lead to our feet getting cold or not having enough room to swell up a bit (as is common when we're sitting for long periods of time). Sneakers are the best option, hands down.

Always Save A Zip-Up Hoodie For Those Chilly Moments

Why a zip-up hoodie, specifically? Because in the event that one needs to be pulled on in the car, it's a hoodie that can be thrown on without having to unbuckle your seatbelt.

Furthermore, it allows plenty of versatility if you're looking to leave it open for ventilation or zip it up to keep all of that heat closeby.

Opt For Stretchy Pants Over Jeans Every Time

It's should be common sense but stretchy jeans definitely don't count. Even if it's a pair of slightly baggy sweatpants, your lower half will be so much happier having the space - and freedom - to stretch out in whatever way possible during a car ride.

We promise that no one will judge you for wearing your most comfortable bottoms, especially after an eight-hour car ride.

Consider Your Socks

Something many people don't realize is that the bottoms of our feet and the top of our heads release a ton of heat. This means that both locations on the human body can easily feel suffocated and sweaty which is never pleasant - therefore, consider your socks!

Related:  10 Things Everyone Forgets To Pack For A Road Trip

It might seem cute and fun to opt for fluffy, wool socks on the drive, but your feet might be sweltering and hating you three hours in. Alternatively, thin socks could lead to your feet being  too  cold, especially if everyone wants those car heaters pointed at their faces rather than their lower halves.

And Then, Consider A Hat

There's some percentage of heat that escapes through our heads but that's not really important.

What is important is the fact that a hat can go a long way in terms of keeping a person warm and if nothing else, it's super easy and convenient to stash a beanie in a bag. Plus, they look cute on everyone and it's a great excuse to avoid wasting time fixing your hair for the day. You're welcome.

Always Bring A Large Tote Bag For A Quick Change Of Clothes If Needed

If all else fails and you really are one of those people who can never get comfortable, then be sure to stash a change of clothes. It could be as simple as a pair of PJ pants or comfy shorts, or an extra t-shirt or tank top in the event that it's a little stuffier than usual. Or, it could be your favorite sweatshirt and a pair of yoga pants. Whatever it is, don't forget the tote bag.

Her Packing List

Packing Lists

Ultimate female packing list to road tripping the southwest usa – winter edition.

' src=

This packing list for a Southwest USA road trip is brought to you by Elisa Marcheschi , a G Adventures CEO. See all packing list posts here .

Is winter at home giving you a case of cabin fever? Traveling in the winter can be just the diversion needed to lift your spirits and give you a new perspective for springtime. Here in the USA, we are lucky enough to have travel opportunities that cover a variety of climates in our winter. If you’re from the Southern Hemisphere, a winter trip to America can help you check “build a snowman” off your bucket list. If you’re from a colder climate, the Southwest’s dry desert and blue sky will divert your attention from the grey weather at home.

Since I travel frequently, I aim to streamline my travel style. No checked bags here! Winter travel can mean packing a few extra necessities that add bulk to your bag, but it is still completely possible to pack at least two weeks’ worth of winter gear in your carry-on bag . For my last trip I packed everything I needed and realized I could have streamlined even further and saved space!

How Elisa normally travels.

Example Itinerary

21 days from Los Angeles, CA to San Francisco, CA in January (or anytime between October and March), California Hwy 1, Hollywood, Grand Canyon, National Parks of Utah, Las Vegas, Death Valley, Yosemite National Park, San Francisco

Temperatures anywhere between -25 to 20 C. San Francisco’s weather is much different and colder than the beaches of LA and San Diego. High elevations like the Grand Canyon and parks in Utah will be extremely cold, rarely reaching above -5 C and often much colder.

What You’ll Need to Pack

1-3 dresses I prefer to pack dresses because I love to wear them and they capitalize on suitcase space. I’ve been known to pack nothing BUT dresses. For winter I like a ponte-knit dress with a full skirt in a solid color and a gray sweater dress… they can go anywhere, with anything, for any occasion. They’re especially great for dinners and city tours.

Unless you are fundamentally opposed to dresses, you should bring at least one for your night in Las Vegas . I usually bring one wowza dress for Vegas that I won’t wear again on the trip, but there is so little material to it that it hardly takes up space. You don’t need to go full glamour girl, but Vegas is the kind of place where it’s best to overdress. If you’re worried that your dress is too over-the-top… Don’t. You’ll see much worse.

1 pair of Leggings Oh black leggings . These sleek bottoms, especially those in a winter-weight, are ideal travel buddies. They look great by themselves. They provide extra warmth layered under dresses. You can even put them under jeans if necessary, which it may be in the high altitudes of Utah.

1 pair of Jeans What else would you wear in the most denim-centric country in the world? I like mine dark and skinny, but whatever suits you. Jeans are acceptable just about everywhere, so you can’t go wrong.

2 skirts (or other pants) I prefer skirts to pants, but either is completely acceptable. I usually bring two knit pencil skirts in a longer and shorter length because they travel so well and pack flat.

2 Layering tank tops (or more) I always bring at least two tanks, no matter the season- one white, one black. On longer trips I’ll bring four or even six. Even if I do nothing more than sleep in them, I am always glad to have them. You know your style. Bring as many as your space reasonably allows.

4-5 tops (blouses, t-shirts, sweaters) If you pick your fabrics wisely, you can get away with packing a few extra of these. I always pack at least two extra- I’m a messy eater. For winter, I like 1 knit sweater, 1 white button-down, and 3-4 tee shirts of varying casualness.

3 mid-weight layers

1 Cardigan – My favorite is long, black, and warm

1 Blazer – Easily exchangeable for another cardigan, the blazer changes and dresses up an outfit

1 athletic layer – For those cold days in the parks, you’ll want either a hoodie or zip-up jacket of some sort for extra warmth. The trick with this layer is it’s got to be warm but thin enough to pack efficiently and/or layer under your coat — you don’t want something big and bulky.. My choice is a Patagonia zip-up soft-shell; it is waterproof, windproof, extra-toasty, and very smart.

2 coats I bring two because I get sick of wearing the same thing every day. If you are not vain like me, then one is completely fine and will significantly cut down on your suitcase space. I like to bring a snowboard coat because it’s warm and has so many pockets it might as well be a purse. My other coat is a pretty trench that works well in the cities.

great southwestern sunset

The Accessories

1 pair of awesome boots These should be in every girl’s closet. The kind of boots that can go anywhere and kick down any doors necessary. If done right, these will take you through the snowiest bits of trails and the brightest of cities. They should be tough enough to withstand the elements, but they don’t have to be moonboots either.

1 pair of everywhere flats I usually buy a pair to start the trip and by the end of it I give them to someone on the street. In winter I particularly drawn to leopard flats. Bonus points if they are small enough to travel in your clutch for those long walks on the Las Vegas Strip.

1 pair of high heels I have gone on several trips without high heels for the purpose of saving space, and every single time I have lamented it. Of course, many people never miss them. This is entirely personal, but if you are a heels kind of woman then you will want to have them in Las Vegas. America is one of the few places in the world where high heels are actually practical. If you like em, bring em.

Alternatively, you can always go shopping in Vegas. Just sayin.

2 scarves I like to have one in a knit winter weight and the other in a lighter weight. They do endless things for your wardrobe.

Jewelry as necessary I am particularly bad about jewelry. I always bring a million times more than I need (it doesn’t really take up that much space, does it?). Learn from my mistakes and pick the pieces you know work with an outfit and leave the rest at home.

Belts One for your jeans, one for your waist. Maybe a fancy one as well.

Tights SUPER important for winter. They also bring an extra layer of warmth if necessary. I bring 1 solid black pair, 1 colored pair, and 1 black patterned pair. Some people think tights and leggings are synonymous, but bend over and I’ll show you that they are not.

Socks I like knee socks as a general rule, but just make sure you have enough pairs to suit your style.

Underthings I usually only bring three or four pair. I just wash them in the sink. Maybe that’s gross. I don’t think so. I also only bring two convertible bras in black and nude.

Hat and gloves You will definitely want a warm hat of some kind. Make it part of your personality. You will also find gloves to be necessary at many of the national parks. I like mine to be fingerless with a fold-over mitten flap.

The Toiletries

Solid Neem Oil Shampoo bar

Soap in a bag

Dr. Bronner’s in Citrus

BB Cream w/SPF

1 great palette w/makeup options

Lip protection – It is vital that you have some kind of SPF for your lips , because the high altitude will fry them if not.

Toothpaste and toothbrush

Contacts and accessories

Birth Control

I don’t bring a blow dryer or straightener because I have a pixie cut, which I would highly recommend for travelling.

trusty red suitcase

How I Pack it All

Think of car travel like flying — you’ll have a checked bag that you only get out for the hotel and a “carry-on” bag (aka purse) that houses the things you’ll need during the day.

1 carry-on suitcase A lot of people go for the hard-case or the swivel wheels, but you know, the red one my mom got me for graduation works just fine. I have worked with a lot of travelers who bring their backpacks , and while I love my own backpack, traditional suitcases are just better suited for car travel. Save your Gregory or for a country where you will be walking a lot… you won’t be here.

Eagle Creek pack-it cubes This is probably the best travel accessory I have ever purchased. These packing cubes make your suitcase work for you. I have the large and small double-zip case and they are super rad. Depending on how many clothes I need, I put my tops in one side and my bottoms in the other. If I don’t have as many clothes I put clean on one side and dirty on the other. It’s just such a nice way to compress and organize your clothes on trips.

1 large tote bag Mine is an eco-bag made of red polyester that crumples up into its own little pocket. I love it because it is HUGE but still small enough to count as my personal item on planes. Seriously though, it fits my purse, laptop bag (which functions as my media carry-all), water bottle, road atlas, and an extra outfit. I use it primarily for flying and then organize further on arrival, but I love how small it compresses if I don’t need it any more.

Purse (AKA your carry-on bag for the car) Backpacks may be more your style, but I am a purse woman, and pickpockets are of little concern here, so I just stick with my standard purse of the moment. Mine is a camel leather and is big enough to house my work binder, laptop if necessary, journal, a book, ipod, snacks, water bottle, clutch/wallet, and an absurd amount of lip gloss.

Clutch/Wallet I like to have a pretty little purse for nights out. Mine is small enough to function regularly as a wallet inside my day purse, but big enough to hold all the necessities. Even better, it has a detachable shoulder strap.

Happy Travels!

Packing for the All-American Road Trip

After a long #pandemic year, lots of people are anxious to get out of the house and #travel. They want to see new sights, visit friends and relatives, and generally shake things up a little bit after spending an extended time in quarantine.

While airline travel has become less daunting now that more than half of U.S. adults are fully vaccinated, rental cars are prohibitively expensive. That makes a #roadtrip in your own car a good option, even with gas at $3 per gallon.

Start with a clean, roadworthy car. If your car has unaddressed mechanical issues you think might affect your trip, you’ll want to get them checked out before you go. At the very least, you’ll want to check all tires and top off the fluids.

Once you’ve vacuumed the car’s interior and cleaned its windows, you can begin to pack. You and any companions will spend a lot of time inside the car during the trip, so bring only what you need and can keep organized.

Pack clothing and other items you won’t need until you reach your destination in the trunk, along with a roadside emergency kit. Inside the car, a cell phone mount, charger(s), and a small cooler for drinks and snacks are essential, says the travel blog A Dangerous Business .

If you start the trip with a fresh car, the main challenge will be to keep it organized for the duration of a trip. If you’re traveling with children, give each a bin, packing cube or over-seat organizer to keep their chosen road trip essentials in.

Good things to pack include sunblock, a blanket, bath towels, paper towels and cleaning wipes, and a refillable water bottle. Passengers might like to add a neck pillow, window shades, and other items that can help them travel in relative comfort.

To manage the trash you produce during the trip, have a garbage receptacle handy, and empty it whenever you stop for gas or a restroom break.

Thrift stores supplied by your generous #donations to ClothingDonations.org often have used items that can be repurposed for your road trip. Check them out before you go as a good source of inexpensive travel accessories.

Then, be on your way. Have a #safe and #orgnaized trip!

The New York Times bestselling author of They Knew, Hiding in Plain Sight, and The View from Flyover Country navigates a changing America as she and her family embark on a series of road trips, in a book that is part memoir, part history, and wholly unique. It is one thing to study the fall of democracy, another to have it hit your homeland -- and yet another to raise children as it happens. The Last American Road Trip is one family’s journey to the most beautiful, fascinating, and bizarre places in the US during one of its most tumultuous eras. As Kendzior works as a journalist chronicling political turmoil, she becomes determined that her young children see America before it’s too late. So Kendzior, her husband, and the kids hit the road -- again and again. Starting from Missouri, the family drives across America in every direction as cataclysmic events – the rise of autocracy, political and technological chaos, and the pandemic – reshape American life. They explore Route 66, national parks, historical sites, and Americana icons as Kendzior contemplates love for country in a broken heartland. Together, the family watches the landscape of the United States - physical, environmental, social, political -transform through the car window. Part memoir, part political history, The Last American Road Trip is one mother’s promise to her children that their country will be there for them in the future – even though at times she struggles to believe it herself.
