Absolutely fantastic holiday to Sri Lanka

Absolutely fantastic holiday to Sri Lanka booked through David at rickshaw. We loved being able to talk to David and explain everything we wanted to do and change before making our final plan perfect for us. The whole holiday went so smoothly especially with our own personal driver who was brilliant. He followed our itinerary plus added on extras stops along the way. I would recommend anyone to use Rickshaws for a complete stress free holiday. Thankyou so much for making our visit to Sri Lanka the best

Prompt and efficient

Prompt, efficient, friendly service. Listened to what we wanted from a holiday. Came back to us with a Taylor made package, which we asked to be "tweaked" slightly and she obliged.

Excellent customer service

I talked to Steven who had excellent knowledge of our holiday destination. He listened to my requirements and made helpful suggestions. Having decided on a rough plan mid morning, by mid afternoon we had a suggested itinerary with costings. This enabled us to look at our options and confirm the holiday the next morning. Just perfect. Thank you.

Agumentative, rude and sarcastic staff

I very rarely write reviews but I'm so annoyed and upset I had to. I do not expect staff to be rude, argumentative and sarcastic. I wanted an itinerary showing how many nights we would be staying and at how many hotels (9), nothing difficult. Instead I was continually pushed into booking flights and agreeing to a £20k holiday I knew very little about. Ceri did not talk through various options, just kept saying "what do you want to do". I dont know until I'm told the possibilities! I have since spoken to both Audley and Trailfinders, they were like a breath of fresh air. Very helpful, suggesting other things we could do and places to see in a much more thought out way. One of the hotels Rickshaw uses had such bad reviews the other companies would not send guests there. I suggest anyone reading this goes to another company and doesnt trust this rude woman

Hi Judy Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback and I apologise that you feel we fell short of your expectations for your holiday on this occasion. The itinerary we agreed on was the closest we could match to your wishes and at this stage the airline were unable to hold the flights for your trip any longer. We will follow up on your comments about the hotel and are always grateful to be able to improve on the experience we provide. Best wishes, Ceri

Amazing Rickshaw Holiday in Costa Rica

We’re just back from our Costa Rica holiday arranged by Steven at Rickshaw. We’re a family of 4 with children aged 12 and 14. I can’t thank you enough for all your hard work and expert knowledge planning the most amazing holiday ever and all the great guidance and advice along the way to help us get the most out of our travels. It really has been amazing and we’ve all loved every bit of it. The finalised itinerary was perfect and took us to the most stunning and fascinating places across Costa Rica. The activities/experiences which you arranged were mind blowing and the hotels have been perfect (all really lovely rooms, facilities, great locations and all authentically Costa Rican too). All the travelling arrangements have been absolutely seamless and took all the worries away about getting around. The balance of free time has allowed us to customise our holiday even further with additional activities and also have a great relax in the most beautiful surroundings. No idea where we’ll go next but I’m sure we’ll be in touch again in the future. I can highly recommend this amazing company and wouldn’t hesitate to book more adventures with them again in the future.

Excellent service from start to finish

We have just returned from an epic family holiday to Costa Rica with Rickshaw. We were nervous as we had never spent this much on a holiday before, but it was a brilliant experience, made even more so by the excellent service by Rickshaw and their local partners. Nothing was too much trouble, and the local WhatsApp support was brilliant. Steven was really friendly and helpful throughout the whole booking process. We would definitely use Rickshaw travel again, and will be recommending them.

Sri Lanka 9-stop Tour

Just returned from two weeks in Sri Lanka - care was taken over our itinerary so that we had a great combination of locations and excursions in the order that we wanted. Everything went so smoothly before and during - that is the advantage of paying the extra and trusting the experts. Thank you to Ceri, Rickshaw, Heritage Tours and Dilhan our driver and guide for making our trip the perfect mix of relaxing and exciting.

My family has just returned from a fabulous holiday in Costa Rica organised by Hannah at Rickshaw Travel. Hannah was knowledgeable and helpful throughout the booking process and recommended the itinerary and activities. The local tour operator in Costa Rica was excellent; responsive and helpful. I would definitely use Rickshaw again, particularly because I like their ethos of working with local communities.

Family holiday to Vietnam

We just had the most amazing 2 weeks in Vietnam. Rickshaw were great - I emailed them with what we were looking for, Emma then put together several bitesized trips for us, then added some extra things we wanted, removed some that weren't right for our family and we ended up with an excellent itinerary. She was also really helpful with my long list of questions! In Vietnam, the guides and organised trips were excellent, we had lovely hotels, and transport/transfers were always punctual. Having WhatsApp contact with both Rickshaw and their local agents was really helpful too. We felt very looked after throughout the whole booking process and holiday itself.

Hi Rachel Thank you so much for your wonderful review, we’re really happy you have thoroughly enjoyed your Rickshaw family adventure and loved travelling around Vietnam with us! Glorious travels in a place of manifold wonders

My teenage son and I had a terrific time in Costa Rica. What I like (and this is my second time using Rickshaw Travel) is how well the travel advisors (in this case, Kelly) listen: we got exactly what we asked for! There was a lovely mix of locations (mountains, beach, some city life - just as we had hoped), a good pace (around 2-3 days per location), and the order of the itinerary was great, too. It was good to start in the mountains and then move to the locations where wildlife was very much more abundant. (If it had gone in the reverse order, we would have possibly felt a bit underwhelmed by the mountains - which are stunning but offer above all birdlife, whereas the regions around Drake Bay and Manuel Antonio are just teeming with not only birdlife but also mammals and sea life). Transport was totally smooth and reliable. Hotels were fabulous - from the quirky (El Pelicano, in the mountains) to the lush and luxurious (Costa Verde, Manuel Antonio). We had so many highlights... snorkelling... mountain walks with waterfalls... whales... breakfast with monkeys... seeing the quetzals... amazing!

A wonderful company who went the extra…

A wonderful company who went the extra mile (and more) to make our holiday to Greece as perfect as it could be. They listened to our needs carefully (my daughter is neurodivergent) and built a tour that worked for us. When there was a small issue with the car hire our fabulous agent sorted it out quickly and efficiently. Our hotels were lovely and the staff couldn’t do enough to help. I would recommend Rickshaw Travel to anyone.

An amazing adventure in China!

We would just like to say a BIG thank you to Rob - our trip to China was absolutely amazing! We had a ball! Rob listened to our initial ideas and built our tailored itinerary just perfectly . The hotels were spot on- the locations just perfect...... and we really appreciated the bit of luxury in Xian and HK! We braved the metros and put ourselves out there- met some fabulous local people that added to our experience. All the transfers and trips went smoothly and Zoey helped with pointing us in the direction of some activities. We liked that there was time for independent travel too. It sadly rained torrentially in guilan so we couldn't raft but we managed to get a boat trip. Overall we had an incredible experience and we've already recommended you to some friends...we can't wait to go to Japan with you in September

Perfect trip with just a couple of hiccups.

My travels with Rickshaw went very well overall. Miles was extremely helpful and listened to everything we wanted for our trip to Indonesia. We have travelled to 44 countries now mainly in Asia so understand there can be changes and delays etc. I have chosen to use this company again as I feel like I understand how it all works now. The voucher system I found a little confusing to start with. This 3 week trip was a big deal for us going away for our 5 year wedding anniversary and been together 21 years this year (we are 37) so was willing to splurge a little money to ensure a fabulous trip. I normally plan all our trips and to hand over the control to a company was hard at first for me, so thanks to Miles for being so understanding with all my questions. I organised a couple of nights in Dubai on the way out to Indonesia and then a couple of nights in Ubud as I had found gorgeous quiet accommodation right on the non touristy rice fields, Villa Wedang'. Paradise. Both hotels made us feel very welcome and special. Rickshaws tour as such then started in Sanur before our epic journey on the Katharina boat with Seatrek sailing adventures. The hotel in Sanur where we stayed 1 night didn't start off very well. We got to reception around 7pm after a long day of exploring Bali so we were tired and really wanted a shower. One man asked us to sit down and they would bring us a welcome drink and check us in. Brilliant... Although then no one turned up and they forgot about us completely for 20mins. It was like the Mary Celeste. There was no one around. I then stood up and called excuse me behind the reception areas to which we were then seen to but in a hurry and still no welcome drink. They put us in a room on the third floor, just for the 1 night and we were leaving very early next morning. The rooms shower didn't really work well and they gave us a welcome letter with other people's names on. We were not made to feel special in any way considering they knew it was our anniversary and we felt very pushed to one side. We asked for a breakfast box for the morning and they said I had to collect it at 5am from reception and could not deliver it to our room which was quite far away and up many stairs. Anyway on check out I expressed our disappointment in the organisation of the hotel and how they made us feel and told them we will be back in 10 days for 2 nights and hope for a fresh and better experience when we return. When we returned all went very smoothly and they checked us in straight away, we got the welcome drink and they also decided to upgrade our room to the adult only club section as an apology for forgetting us and mixing up paperwork. We now have seen how this hotel really works and we're much happier in this section of the hotel and would have asked to stay they if we had known this existed which is also my fault for not researching the hotel enough. This was a very minor hiccup in an amazing 3 week adventure but I thought you needed to know so others aren't in the same boat. There was also a little error on the voucher on the last day as the pick up time was wrong. We were relaxing by the pool when my name was called by a member of staff saying our driver had arrived (4hrs early) I said I think there's been a mistake. So had to go to reception wrapped in a towel to talk to the driver as he was just concerned we were going to miss our flight, which was sweet. I showed him my Emirates app and that the flight was at 7.55pm (it was 11am at the time) there was an error on the voucher. All sorted and they came back at 4pm to collect us. But If i hadn't had been on it, we would have been at the airport for 8 odd hours. The hotels were very nice, we particularly liked the very quiet night in LB Komodo island and the return nights in Sanur. We would return to both hotels even though we are not normally a fan of big hotels. Puri Santrian in the end felt very relaxed and had different sections to make it all feel more cosy. Seatrek was just absolutely epic. We were welcomed with wine and fancy bed displays. The whole trip was perfect and the crew and leader Dion amazing. 1 of the best experiences of our lives. They have asked us to write a review for their Seatrek magazine as they loved our energy and enthusiasm. Overall the trip was perfect but with a couple of hiccups that could have been easily avoided. Ps not sure where we stand with internal flights delays with insurance? Our flight was only meant to be 1hr 15mins and it was delayed 1hr 20mins... Can you email me and let me know please as I didn't book this but may be able to get compensation for myself or the company. Thanks

Date of experience : August 07, 2024

Hi Natasha Thank you so much for taking the time to leave your review, we’re really happy you enjoyed travelling around Indonesia with us, especially good to hear about your Seatrek experience! We really appreciate your feedback and are so sorry that we missed some details in the planning which impacted on your experience. We will follow up on your comments about the hotel and ensure that all of our team are aware, so future errors are avoided in this area. I will also email you separately regarding your flight compensation. We are always grateful to be able to improve on the experience we provide so this is very helpful, thank you. Kind regards, Miles

Coming soon, 1,400 women-driven pink autorickshaws in Pune city

The maharashtra government is all set to roll out 'pink e-rickshaw' scheme in major cities for safe commute of women..

Pink autorickshaws

Pune women will soon have a safer and more convenient way to travel, as the Maharashtra Government is all set to roll out woman-driven autorickshaws as part of ‘Pink E-Rickshaw’ Scheme.

The government will deploy 1,400 pink autorickshaws that are expected to be operational within two to three months, according to Pune Road Transport Office.

rickshaw travel ltd

Swapnil Bhosle, Deputy RTO of Pune, said the women drivers who wish to apply for the scheme need to bear only 10 per cent cost of the vehicle.

The state government will bear the 20 per cent cost, while the remaining 70 per cent expense will be met through a government-facilitated loan which the beneficiary has to repay within five years.

A woman residing in Pune and aged between 18 and 35 years with a valid driving licence and an annual family income not exceeding Rs 3 lakh per annum can apply for the scheme, Bhosle mentioned.

Festive offer

The state government, in association with the Department of Women and Child Development (WCD), aims to ply 10,000 autorickshaws across 17 cities in the state in the first phase and thereby providing jobs to women drivers.

“Of these, 1,400 fleets of autorickshaws are meant for Pune. Mumbai , Nashik, Nagpur, and Thane are among the other cities where the scheme is being implemented,” said an official.

Bhosle said a committee led by the District Collector will oversee the entire scheme’s functioning, while the WCD Commissioner of Pune will act as the controlling officer for the scheme.

“In cases where the number of applications exceeds the available quota, a transparent lottery system will be used to select beneficiaries,” he added.

The Traffic Police and Transport Department will ensure that the pink e-rickshaws are operated exclusively by the beneficiary women and not by menthe officer mentioned.

History of Lipetsk

Foundation of lipetsk.

According to one version, a fortified Slavic settlement on the site of modern Lipetsk existed even before the Mongol invasion of the mid-13th century. In the chronicles, the settlement of Lipovichsk was first mentioned in 1283-1284. In 1284, it was completely destroyed and for the next several centuries there was no mention of it.

The village of Malye Studenki Lipskie, located on the site of Lipetsk, was first mentioned in the chronicles in the first half of the 17th century. The road from Moscow to Voronezh passed through this place. Presumably from the end of the 17th century, the development of iron ores began here.

In 1703, the construction of iron plants for the needs of the Russian fleet and army began on the Lipovka River, at the place of its confluence with the Voronezh River. Soon, these plants took the second place in Russia in pig iron smelting. This year is considered the foundation date of Lipetsk.

In 1709, the village was renamed to Lipskie Zavody (“Lipskie Plants”). The traveling palace of Peter I and a number of churches were located here. The rapid expansion of production led to the need to build a unique and largest man-made water reservoir (Lipetsk pond) in pre-Soviet Russia with an area of about 0.7 square kilometers. Lipetsk became a production and logistics center for a large metallurgical complex.

In 1779, by decree of Catherine II, Lipskie Zavody received the status of a town of the Tambov Governorate with the name Lipetsk. At that time, its population was about 6 thousand people. In 1781, Lipetsk received its coat of arms, which depicted a spreading linden tree (“lipa” in Russian) on a gold background, which symbolized the name of the town.

More Historical Facts…

Lipetsk as a resort town of the Russian Empire

In 1791-1803, the Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ, the highest church in Lipetsk, was built. Today, it is still an architectural dominant of the city. The end of the Russian-Turkish war of 1787-1791 moved the Russian borders to the Northern Black Sea region and the need to maintain the Voronezh shipyards disappeared. This fact, together with the depletion of the forests used for fuel, led to the decline of industrial life in Lipetsk.

In 1795, after the opening of new iron-smelting plants in the south of the Russian Empire with a new, more advanced technology for smelting pig iron and steel, the plants in Lipetsk were closed, the bulk of the equipment and workers were transferred to the Lugansk Foundry in Lugansk.

Built for the needs of the plant, the pond in Lipetsk stood out not only in size, but also in its absence of fish. This fact was noticed by the local population. In 1800, Vander, a county medical doctor, reported to the medical board about the healing properties of local mineral waters.

In 1805, a chemical analysis showed the similarity of the Lipetsk mineral waters with the waters of the famous Western European resorts. As it was the time of the Napoleonic wars and social tension in Europe, the resort in Lipetsk gained popularity in the high society of the Russian Empire as a Russian analogue of the Belgian Spa. In 1806, on the territory of the plant and pond, an “English garden” was laid out. Later, it was named Nizhniy Park and became the largest city park in Lipetsk.

In 1806, a big fire broke out in the wooden chaotically built up Lipetsk. After it, the town was rebuilt according to the General Plan with straight wide streets and buildings made of stone and brick. Resort buildings, a hotel, an entertainment hall were built. Noble and merchant mansions were constructed on Dvoryanskaya (Lenina) Street.

In 1862, there were 11,659 residents in Lipetsk. The city had 8 Orthodox churches, 3 schools, a hospital and a post station, three fairs, and five factories producing mainly candles and soap. In 1868-1869, the South-Eastern Railway passed through the city. By the last third of the 19th century, the resort also offered mud, peat, and kumis therapies.

Lipetsk in the first half of the 20th century

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the industry of Lipetsk was revived, when, in connection with the expansion of railway construction, Russian and foreign entrepreneurs decided to re-use the iron ore deposits near Lipetsk. According to the all-Russian census, a little more than 20 thousand people lived in the city at that time. In 1899, the construction of the first blast furnace of the Sokolsky Metallurgical Plant began. During the First World War, aircraft construction began to develop in Lipetsk.

In 1921, the Lipetsk Drama Theater was opened. Lipetsk continued to develop as an aviation center. In 1923, an aviation school was opened in Lipetsk to train a new generation of Soviet aviators. But the existing knowledge, technology, and financial resources were lacking. That’s why, in 1925, it was decided to organize a secret joint Soviet-German aviation school here. After Hitler came to power in Germany, it was closed. In 1934, the Red Army Air Force Higher Tactical Flight School was opened in its place.

In 1931, the Novolipetsk Metallurgical Plant was founded. Today, it is known as Novolipetsk Steel or NLMK, one of the largest steel companies in Russia. The construction of this enterprise became a turning point in the history of Lipetsk. Lipetsk turned into a large industrial center. In 1939, the population of Lipetsk was 66,644 people.

During the Second World War, evacuation hospitals were organized on the territory of Lipetsk. In total, up to 40 hospitals functioned in the city during the war. In the period from 1941 to 1942, and then until the end of the war, equipment, several shops and a blast furnace of the metallurgical plant were evacuated to Chelyabinsk and were not returned back. About 7 thousand residents of the city mobilized into the ranks of the Red Army were killed in battles.

In the first years after the war, the local industry was intensively restored. In 1947, the first tram line was opened. In 1949, the pedagogical school of Lipetsk was transformed into the first higher educational institution of the city - Lipetsk Pedagogical Institute.

Lipetsk - the capital of Lipetsk Oblast

On January 6, 1954, during the downsizing of a number of regions of central Russia, a separate Lipetsk Oblast was created, and the city of Lipetsk received the status of a regional center. In 1956, the population of Lipetsk was about 123,000.

The regional capital status allowed the city to develop intensively. Construction of many regional institutions began, roads were paved, a large-scale program of landscaping and street lighting was carried out. In 1966, a direct railway connection with Moscow was opened, and the building of the Lipetsk airport was constructed. In 1989, the population of Lipetsk was 449,635 people.

In the early 1990s, because of the collapse of the USSR, a lot of local industrial enterprises found themselves in a difficult situation, failed to adapt to the market economy, and went bankrupt. However, the city continued to develop.

In 1993, the plant for the production of refrigerators “Stinol” was opened on the basis of the Novolipetsk Metallurgical Plant. It was built by the Italian company Merloni (since 2005 - Indesit). In 1996, the second monument to Peter the Great was opened in Lipetsk, which became an important landmark of the city center.

In 2002-2005, there was a significant reduction in tram transport. In 2004, the washing machine plant “Indesit” was built. In 2008, the special economic zone “Lipetsk” was opened - an industrial area with benefits for foreign capital.

Today, Lipetsk is known as a major producer of steel and rolled products, building materials, household appliances, juices, and mineral water, as well as a training center for Russian pilots. The aerobatic team “Falcons of Russia” is based in Lipetsk.

Lipetsk - Features

Lipetsk is located on both banks of the Voronezh River in the forest-steppe zone in the east of Lipetsk Oblast in the central part of European Russia. The length of the city from north to south is 22 km, from west to east - 27 km. The City Day of Lipetsk is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of July.

The climate is temperate continental. Despite the fact that Lipetsk is located at the latitude of Berlin and Amsterdam, winter in the city is with a stable snow cover, the average temperature in January is minus 7.3 degrees Celsius. Summer is warm, the average temperature in July is about plus 20 degrees Celsius.

Lipetsk is the core of the largest agglomeration in Russia with a specialization in the field of full cycle ferrous metallurgy, as well as an industrial, agro-technological, and aviation center. The main enterprise of the city is Novolipetsk Steel (NLMK), which is the largest steel plant in Russia.

The main supplier of raw materials for the enterprise is the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly, one of the largest deposits of iron ore in the world located about 350 km from Lipetsk. NLMK is also the city’s largest air pollutant, although pollution levels have been gradually decreasing in recent years.

The city is located between the federal highways “Don” and “Caspian” and has a developed network of industrial railways. The airport of Lipetsk is located 15 km north-west of the city center and offers regular flights to Moscow. Buses and trams are used as urban public transport.

Better known as a city of metallurgists than as an interesting tourist destination, Lipetsk deserves at least a few hours of attention. Walking around the city center, seeing its historical sights, walking through old parks and alleys, visiting places that are significant for Lipetsk - one day of unhurried sightseeing is quite enough for this.

Main Attractions of Lipetsk

Peter the Great Square - the main festive events in Lipetsk are held on this square including the City Day. One of the symbols of Lipetsk is installed here - the monument to Peter the Great (1996). In 2006, a light and music fountain was opened on the square.

Cathedral of the Nativity of Christ (1791-1842) - a majestic Orthodox church located at Sobornaya (Lenina) Square, the second main square of Lipetsk. It is the spiritual center of Lipetsk and the architectural dominant of the city visible from afar. The height of the bell tower with a spire and a clock is 60 meters. In this square, you can also find a grand staircase with a cascade of fountains next to which there is the stele to Emperor Peter the Great (1869).

On the territory of this park you can find the house-museum of Peter the Great, a pavilion with mineral water, rides for children and adults including a Ferris wheel, several monuments, a zoo, a planetarium, several cafes.

Komsomolsky Pond - an artificial reservoir in Lipetsk located on the opposite side of Petrovskiy Proyezd from Nizhniy Park. In 2003, a monument was erected here in honor of the 300th anniversary of the city of Lipetsk - a gilded ship with very high masts placed on a column.

Lipetsk Regional Museum of Local Lore - the central museum of Lipetsk Oblast. In total, there are 18 exhibition halls, where you can see exhibits on the history of the Lipetsk region from antiquity to the present day: paintings, icons, old books, ethnographic materials, a collection of toys of the 19th-20th centuries, furniture, jewelry, outfits of nobles, weapons of the Second World War, and even a wax figure of Peter I. Lenina Street, 25.

Here you can see items of peasant life, traditional folk costumes, examples of folk crafts and handicrafts of the Lipetsk land. Kosmonavtov Street, 2.

Lipetsk Park of Miniatures in “Bykhanov Sad” Park. Here you can see models of the most interesting buildings of Lipetsk and neighboring towns such as Yelets, Lebedyan, Dankov, as well as villages of the Lipetsk region. Gagarina Street, 70b.

Church of the Venerable Martyr Evdokia (1817-1818) - a picturesque Orthodox church in the classical style, a historical and cultural monument located in the center of Lipetsk. Gagarina Street, 70.

Aviatorov (Aviators) Square . The main attraction of this square is a combat aircraft installed on a pedestal in 1969 in honor of the pilots of the Lipetsk air squadron. In 2003, the figures of the pilots L.A. Krivenkov and S.M. Sherstobitov were placed next to the monument. In 1968, their aircraft broke down in the sky over Lipetsk and, at the cost of their lives, they took it away from residential areas.
