While I’ve long admired the Old Swan Brewery, sitting proudly on the banks of the Swan River, I’d never stopped for a closer look. Not once had I visited the now-closed brewery for a bite to eat, or the popular Italian, Zafferano. The historic building sits on its own isolated island, cut off by water and traffic, you need to make an extra effort to stop by.

old swan brewery tour

The Old Swan Brewery has been purchased by Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest’s private company Tattarang in 2019. Late last year, he opened Cooee, a restaurant with a distinctly West Australian feel. I seized the opportunity to check out the iconic Perth spot. The dining room has its roots firmly planted in WA with an earthy palate. Cane furniture oozes a chic, though relaxed, resort feel. Each table enjoys spectacular views across the river to the Narrows Bridge and Perth city beyond.

Lunch at Cooee

Our cheery waitress leads us outside. There’s a brisk breeze off the Swan, though the patio is relatively sheltered. The tables are well spaced, and the music kept firmly in the background, lending well to conversations without having to raise your voice.

old swan brewery tour

While the contemporary wine list heavily features drops from vineyards using biodynamic, ecologic, minimal intervention, and pet-nat making methods, there are plenty of old favourites. I sip a light and fruity Corymbia chenin blanc, produced in the Swan Valley with no chemical fertilizers, pesticides or sulphites.

old swan brewery tour

The share menu is briming with unfussy, clean flavours and you don’t need a glossary to decipher it. This is fine dining simplified. WA produce if featured, notably beef from Harvest Road and Leeuwin Coast akoya – both businesses owned by Forrest.

The Cooee Perth Menu

Akoya, a relatively new ingredient to Perth kitchens, takes pride of place on Cooee’s menu. Chefs are still in an experimental phase when it comes to how best to cook this delicate morsel – most like a mussel in flavour and appearance. At Cooee, the Akoya ($26) is smoked with applewood, then topped with chili, garlic and a light pangrattato crumb. They’re worth a try. The crisp crumb of cauliflower cheese croquettes ($14) leads to a gooey cheddar centre, with added kick of jalapeño.

old swan brewery tour

Must-try plump Abrolhos Island scallops ($18), are plated on their shell, along with a fragrant sweet curry of pine nuts and raisins.

old swan brewery tour

Thinly sliced pressed pork belly ($18), has a morish depth of flavour, thanks to being cooked in a master stock along with chilli and fennel. Plated with a sticky prune compote, candied seeds and nuts, the tender belly meat is topped with pickled onions. Another must-order dish.

old swan brewery tour

The “large plates” are still on the smaller side. The day’s market fish, a line caught Bremmer Bay nannygai ($36), is over-salted, topped with lemon, lentils, chives and capers. Capers are already a briny component, and this dish’s saltiness overpowers the delicate fish.

old swan brewery tour

A vibrant salad of heirloom tomatoes ($14), lightly dressed with an herb and sherry vinaigrette, proves how good fresh, un-fussy food can be.

old swan brewery tour

Rustic French fries are a little oily, but add a starch to bulk out our small plates. An addition of aioli would be welcome.

old swan brewery tour

Cooee Deserts

After a decent pause, a rosewater pannacotta ($14), arrives with delicate Turkish delight flavours. An almond brittle provides crunch and a raspberry sherbet leaves a surprising punch on the pallet.

old swan brewery tour

A subtly savory dessert of freshly diced mango ($14), coated in a lemongrass broth, is a vegan delight. Served with a scoop of coconut sorbet and a sprinkle of curry leaves, a coconut coral tuille sits proudly on the pretty dish.

old swan brewery tour

Whether you stop by Cooee for brunch, lunch or dinner, you will want to linger a little longer to enjoy its fabulous view. The restaurant is a breath of fresh air at the Old Swan Brewery, as is the interesting menu – a celebration of the finest WA produce blended with Indigenous ingredients and Asian flavours. Be sure to say hello to Cooee.

Brunch at Cooee Perth

Before my lunch date, I made an impromtu visit for a light brunch with my parents. We hadn’t made a booking, we were easily seated at a fab table outside, under a shady umbrella. First up was the coffee, which was very good. I enjoyed a simple avocado on toast ($16), with tomato, cucumber, basil and lime. Plus a very generous side of bacon.

old swan brewery tour

My Dad ordered the fruit toast ($12), not expecting anything out of the ordinary. The simple breakfast staple is elevated by premium components of house baked thick cut raisin bread, served with their own peach jam and orange marmalade.

old swan brewery tour

Cooee makes a good spot for a brunch and walk combo along the river. All in all, the venue is stunning, the service very personable and friendly, and the food simply good. We’ve been a few times now, and we’d absolutely return for a fifth visit.

Cooee – Perth’s newest riverside eatery brings new life to Old Swan Brewery

Z1z has opened its first venue, cooee, on the banks of the swan river at the old swan brewery..

Cooee-Launch-Event-5-Nov-20-0019

Perth’s newest restaurant experience – Cooee – will bring all-day dining back to the iconic Old Swan Brewery when it officially opens to the public on Friday, 6 November.

Breathing new life into the prominent riverside location – formerly home to Zafferano Restaurant – the 125-seat eatery has been extensively renovated by leading local interior experts, Design Theory, to create a casual and modern dining experience that accentuates the picturesque surroundings.

Combining a restaurant, alfresco area with panoramic views and dedicated takeaway coffee window to service riverside passers-by, Cooee is the first venue to open as part of the food and beverage portfolio of Z1Z, the accommodation, food and beverage, lifestyle, and sport arm of Tattarang.

Z1Z’s General Manager Alan Ford said the entire Cooee team were excited to welcome visitors back to the Old Swan Brewery and inject new energy into the historic riverside precinct.

“Cooee’s unique location on the banks of the Swan River is an incredible advantage, however our goal is to deliver a dining experience for our guests that is just as memorable,” Mr Ford said.

“We want Cooee to be the kind of venue where everyone feels welcome at any time of the day. Whether that’s a post-cycling coffee, a long lunch with friends or an afternoon of alfresco-style dining, every element has been considered to make Cooee accessible for all.”

Complementing the menu will be a sophisticated yet contemporary wine list, with a focus on top Western Australia brands, plus a range of leading interstate and international producers.

For more information or to make a booking visit cooeeperth.com .

Location 171 – 173 Mounts Bay Road, Perth

Description

Old Swan Brewery, Perth

  • Stunning sunrise views. Also happens to be the best time to visit the now infamous Blue Boat House, walking distance from the brewery.

The Old Swan Brewery is an icon in Perth, with striking architecture and steeped in history  it also provides stunning views of the sunrise back towards the city and Narrows Bridge. Park just before the brewery and take the pathway to a small jetty. Mind your footing on the jetty, she's solid but old and a bit lumpy under foot.

Early morning also happens to be the best time to visit the now infamous Blue Boat House, walking distance from the brewery. On the way to the boat house keep an eye out for Eliza, a bronze statue standing in the river, she receives a frequent change of clothes! Yet another fun photo opportunity.

The Best Swan Valley Breweries To Hit This Weekend

By Sarah Davis

29th Feb 2024

Swan valley brewery

Get ready to sip in style, because we're about to spill the tea on the ultimate brew havens in our very own Swan Valley and its giving stunning views and world class brews.

We're talking about a whole squad of breweries and cideries bringing the party to the valley. So, whether you're a local legend or a weekend wanderluster, we’ve got you covered for your next Swan Valley beer crawl.

Here are the best Swan Valley breweries to hit right now.

Caversham

Strap in for a mind-blowing experience at Vineyard Funk 2.0 . This off-the-charts joint is all about pushing the boundaries of all things cider. Kicking things up a notch, with unpasteurised, preservative-free, and sugar-free cidery creations, the guys at Funk 2.0 are taking flavour to a whole new level. The vibrant space features indoor and outdoor seating with an epic bar serving up 18 taps of ciders, beers, and mind-bending hybrids.

Their kitchen is rocking a seasonal modern Australian menu with gluten-free and vegan options available. Bring the crew, bring the kids and definitely bring the dogs, the sprawling lawn area and shaded deck are all but begging for a cheeky Sunday session.

Coming soon, Funk Cider's new 1000m2 production site at Funk 2.0, their second Swan Valley venue, offers exciting immersive experiences in 2023 like cider blending workshops, production tours, and meet the cidermaker events.

Funk 2.0

Baskerville Tavern

Baskerville.

What do you get when you cross one of Perth's most loved Brewers and the Swan Valleys OG Brew Pub? You get Slumdog Brewery. Situated in the former Feral Brewing site, Baskerville Tavern is home to one of Perth's most loved craft beer legacies. Newly appointed head brewer, cicerone and a long time favourite on the Perth beer scene Adam Lesk has taken the reins at Slumdog Brewing, ensuring that the spirit of exceptional brews in the valley lives on.

For those familiar with this site you will be happy to see that the team behind The Baskerville Tavern are keeping it old school. Expect a hoppy American Style IPA, German Pilsner, English Brown Ale and a Mid Strength that will keep any hop head happy, even if they have pulled the designated driver short straw.  As is tradition, dogs are not only welcome but encouraged, classic pub grub is bountiful and the brews are flowing as ever.

Baskerville Tavern

Txoko Brewing

Sitting pretty in the Darling Ranges, this family owned and operated brewery is making some serious noise all the way out in the valley. This family orientated brew pub is not only a hit with the kids, but they are also pumping out some of the Swan Valley’s finest frothies. With humble beginnings as a homebrewer founder Gabreil Rodriguez, and his pizza making dad have long wanted to open a brewery/pizzeria in the Swan Valley.

With seasonally rotating taps, a cosy setting in a fitted out old barn, this brewery has something for the whole family. Taking their inspiration from the Basque country in Spain, the name Txoko pronounced Cho-Ko is used to describe a small commune of people who gather usually once a week to eat, drink and be merry, and we think they have smashed it out of the park.

Txoko Brewing

Homestead Brewery

Situated on the dazzling Mandoon Estate , you would easily be forgiven for thinking Mandoon Estate exclusively produces some of Swan Valley's best loved wines. Enter Homestead Brewery, and Stuart Taylor a former hospitality alum, who cut his teeth brewing with some of Perth's most loved brewers. Kitted out with a traditional German brew kit, Stuart is smashing out some Perth finest old world beers right in the heart of our very own Swan Valley.

In addition to their killer core beers, they also feature a rotating selection of seasonal releases that'll blow your mind. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Homestead Brewery are serving up pub classics seven days a week, so breakfast beers anyone?

Homestead Brewing

Valley Social

Henley brook.

Get ready to party at Valley Social , this rad brewery slash restaurant that's taken over the former Elmar's spot and is rocking the biggest glass micro-brewery kettle in the Southern Hemisphere. The guys at Swan Valley social have certainly levelled up with a vibrant new vibe, starting with their spacious interior decked out in wooden floors and not just one, but three epic bars.

What makes their brews super special is the added addition of hemp. Featuring a list of hemp infused beers all made on site, the guys at Valley Social are pushing the boundaries of Perth's already eclectic brewing scene. Add to the mix some seriously delicious Australian X North American BBQ, Valley Social takes great pride in using locally sourced produce from Swan Valley whenever possible, as well as from other awesome places across Western Australia.

Valley Social

Bailey Brewing Co

These blokes love a beer, just ask them. This father, son brewing operation is spruiking a family and dog friendly vibe, easy drinking crafty brews and simple food to boot. Kitted out with the relics of an old shed, this brewpub is pumping out simple, sessionable, great tasting beers, with the finest WA ingredients.

Open six days a week, for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with mid week specials on offer and kids eating free on Sundays, this brewery is killing it with the wholesome Swan Valley vibes. Make a booking online or head down early to nab a spot on the grass and grab some roadies while you're at it.

Bailey Brewing

Mash Brewing

Henley brook .

Mash Brewing in the Valley is like your local craft genius. They've got this awesome craft brewery on site, making killer beers and delicious bites. The awards they've won? Impressive. But don't let the serious amount of awards fool you—they're all about good, wholesome Swan Valley vibes. Did we mention that kids eat free from 5:00pm on Fridays and Saturdays?

Looking for a spot to host your shindig? They've got that covered too, from birthdays to work parties and even weddings. So round up your gang and head to Mash Brewing Co. for a taste of awesome craftiness and seriously good times!

Perth’s iconic landmark Blue Boat House by the Swan River. Perth's city skyline can be seen from afar.

Walk by The Swan River: Forrest Hall The Old Swan Brewery

The walk between Forrest Hall and the Old Swan Brewery, with a one-way distance of 2.1 km, allows walkers to walk on flat riverfront walking paths alongside Mounts Bay Road and the Swan River, and visit three of Perth city’s iconic landmarks – Blue Boat House, the Eliza Sculpture, and the Old Swan Brewery.

Forrest Hall

Located at the bank of the Swan River and the northern end of the Matilda Bay Reserve, Forrest Hall is an accommodation facility of the Forrest Research Foundation designed to provide a creative living environment for research scholars attending Western Australian universities.

Forrest Hall is just a 5-minute drive from Perth CBD and is adjacent to the University of Western Australia (UWA) in the Crawley suburb by the Swan River.

What does the Forrest Research Foundation do?  The Foundation was set up to attract outstanding minds to Western Australia to undertake high-quality research with the potential to change the world.

To learn more about the Forrest Research Foundation, check out the Forrest Research Foundation website.

Blue Boat House

Blue Boat House is about 600m from Forrest Hall.  Officially known as Crawley edge Boat Shed, the Blue Boat House is a privately owned boathouse.  The boathouse has been around since the 1930s.  The owner revamped the boathouse in 2004 and repainted it with a beautiful blue colour, which was how it got its new and better-known name: Blue Boat House.  Its new colour scheme has made the boathouse stands out on the Swan River whatever the season or the weather, or the time of the day.  Blue Boat House is probably most beautiful in the morning and evening.

Arguably Blue Boat House is the most photographed sight in Perth.  Often you see people queuing up to take photos at the Blue Boat House.  Check out the hashtag #blueboathouse on Instagram and you will know why.

Eliza Sculpture

Eliza Sculpture is about 250m from Blue Boat House.  It is a bronze sculpture of a woman about to dive off.  Standing at 2.2 m tall and 15 m off the shoreline, the sculpture was the work of Perth’s local artist Tony Jones completed in 2007.  Eliza Sculpture has taken the name of Mount Eliza, a hill on the eastern side of Kings Park.

You may notice some mysterious persons regularly put on different outfits on Eliza Sculpture.  You may need some luck to spot the mysterious persons while they are dressing up Eliza Sculpture.

The Old Swan Brewery

The Old Swan Brewery used to be a brewery site and is a heritage-listed riverfront building on the Swan River.  The site was redeveloped by the Western Australia state government in the 1980s and 1990s after ceasing to be a brewery.

Today, the Old Swan Brewery is a mixed-use precinct with residential apartments, commercial floor space for offices and restaurants, and a car park.

Breathtaking views of the Swan River have made this riverfront building a Perth’s iconic landmark.

A culinary gem that captures the essence of modern Western Australian dining.

Cooee’s location, tucked into the old Swan Brewery right on the river, makes it a destination venue in itself. Step inside, and the interiors are modern and stylish to match, in keeping with the Australian heritage building, with warm wood accents and large windows overlooking the Swan River out to Elizabeth Quay.

There’s no reinventing the wheel here, with a menu that’s both fresh and seasonal, built to showcase Cooee’s commitment to sustainability and supporting local producers in dishes that are a testament to Western Australia’s diverse produce.

There’s no reinventing the wheel here, with a menu that’s both fresh and seasonal, built to showcase Cooee’s commitment to sustainability and supporting local producers in dishes that are a testament to Western Australia’s diverse produce. Mains see plates of protein take centre stage. A hearty, crisp-skinned fillet of goldband snapper, a local favourite, is complemented by a tangy yet delicate sauce with salty pops from capers. O’Connor Scotch fillet, seared to medium perfection and sliced precisely, is topped with chimichurri for herbal freshness (a side of hand-cut fries is a must).

Yet it’s the seasonal starters that truly shine, like in a dish of Torbay asparagus and new-season broad beans with exceptional La Delizia stracciatella, a celebration of spring’s bounty. A superb wine list with a WA tilt complements attentive service, the theme being a celebration of the state in a setting that shows it off at its best.
