James Taylor grew up in North Carolina, and his classic song about escaping back there when life is too tough perfectly captures the allure of his home state. The bridge of the song, “Dark and silent, late last night, I think I might have heard the highway call…” is a familiar feeling to any born traveler.

It’s probably not possible to take a midnight train to Georgia or much of anywhere else these days, but oh, the harmonies on this song!

4. 'Take Me Home, Country Roads' by John Denver

When we took a poll for favorite songs about specific destinations, this one was mentioned over and over again. And while it’s such an evocative celebration of West Virginia’s natural beauty that it became the state’s official song in 2014, that longing captured in Denver’s voice is really what makes the song universal.

Who of us hasn’t longed to go back “to the place I belong”? By the way, Denver had never even been to West Virginia when he wrote it!

5. 'Sweet Home Alabama' by Lynyrd Skynyrd

Here’s another absolute classic that’s about traveling home, which we defy you not to sing whenever anyone mentions traveling to Alabama.

Not only has this song made iconic appearances in several movies (like Nicole Kidman’s unforgettable dance to it in "To Die For"), it manages to diss to Neil Young, as well. But, oh, that guitar riff! Roll down the windows and turn up the volume…

6. 'California Dreaming' by the Mamas and the Papas

The four-part harmony of the Mamas and the Papas evocatively captures the longing many of us have felt on a dreary day at home, when we’ve dreamt of our packing our bags and heady to more sunny climates immediately.

“If I didn’t tell her,” they sing, “I could leave today.” It’s so tempting.

7. 'I Left My Heart in San Francisco' by Tony Bennett

Bennett is just one of many artists to record this classic, but his version is iconic. The song namechecks quite a few places we wouldn’t mind going – Paris, Rome – but then returns the singer to the best place of all, San Francisco, where the “golden sun will shine for me.”

San Francisco can be pretty grey, actually, but the song still hits the spot. Who of us wouldn’t take a trip to see the Golden Gate Bridge right this very moment?

8. 'I’ve Been to Memphis' by Lyle Lovett

While this song isn’t as well-known as others on the list, it deserves to be. Lyle Lovett released in 1992, but it has the sound of a much older song, the kind Ray Charles might have sung.

Lovett mentions a long list of places he’s been, such as Memphis, El Paso, San Antonio, only to return to his central problem: he loves a woman “what I don't know.”

Anyone who’s spent too much time on the road trying not to think about someone at home will understand.

9. 'April in Paris' by Ella Fitzgerald

Can you put together a road trip playlist and not include some Ella? We certainly can’t. This swinging song evokes springtime in Paris so beautifully, with the lyrics about “chestnuts in blossom” that it takes all of our will power not to buy a ticket for de Gaulle for next spring.

“What have you done to my heart?” Ella asks the city. We totally understand.

10. 'Atlantic City' by Bruce Springsteen

At the opposite end of the music spectrum is this classic rock number. Springsteen makes Atlantic City seem as gritty as can be, between the mobsters, the sketchy boardwalk and the cross-city bus. But still, the song is alluring.

Maybe it’s the promise that if we put “your make up on, put your hair up pretty” we can meet the Boss tonight in Atlantic City? It’s not an offer we’d pass up.

11. 'I Happen to Like New York' by Judy Garland

Look, there are dozens of great songs about New York, from “New York, New York” to “Empire State of Mind,” so we decided to go with a less obvious classic.

Garland’s version of Cole Porter’s song is swell. It manages to mention Hackensack, New Jersey (which is rejected) and a pastrami on rye at the Carnegie Deli (which is celebrated).

As the lyrics inform us, “The more I see New York, the more I think of it.” It’s a sentiment that many of us can agree with wholeheartedly.

12. 'Margaritaville' by Jimmy Buffet

But when the churning energy of cities gets to be too much, you’ll want to head south again, this time to a yet another place in that’s more a state of mind than a geographic location: Margaritaville.

Sometimes trips are really an excuse to waste away, and Buffet’s beloved song perfectly captures that mood. Grab a salt shaker and a bottle, and stay for a while. It’s not like Jimmy’s going to urge you to be more productive.

13. 'Africa' by Toto

We know, it’s already in your head: "dodo dodo dodo dooo." How much this song really has to do with the continent is anyone’s guess, but for many people, this is the song that comes to mind when Africa is mentioned as a travel destination.

The sense of longing and wonder that suffuses it is probably not a bad mindset for a traveler to any destination, but especially to Africa. Bless those rains.

14. 'Back in the U.S.S.R.' by The Beatles

Sure, you technically can’t travel to the U.S.S.R. anymore, but this song is still perfect for a trip to Russia!

The song parodies the Beach Boys’ “California Girls” a bit, with the lyrics like “The Ukraine girls really knock me out,” and the song is just a lot of fun: try to resist singing along to the line: “Georgia on my my my my mind”!

There are plenty of songs with “America” in the title, too, but we decided that this song by Neil Diamond, which manages somehow to be both a little campy and a little touching, perfectly captured the desire many of us, or our ancestors, felt: to get to the U.S.A. “on the boats and on the planes.”

Sure, the synthesizer is cheesy, but when you think of the amazing travel destinations the States offers, it’s hard not to agree that we’ve all “got a dream to take them there.”

Kid Rock says that the song was inspired by a Bob Seger song titled “Night Moves.” The song has snippets from Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” and Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama.”

5. “Party in the U.S.A.” — Miley Cyrus

On the surface, “Party in the U.S.A.” is about a young woman who has been thrust into a big and complicated world. In the song, Cyrus sings about wondering if she’ll fit in, but she also talks about a sense of adventure and possibility.

The song was written by Dr. Luke and it was originally intended to be recorded by Jessie J. However, Dr. Luke determined that it wasn’t edgy enough for Jessie, so he passed it on to Miley.

6. “A Thousand Miles” — Vanessa Carlton

While travel and adventure songs can be bold anthems, they can also be piano ballads with the same adventure vibe. Vanessa Carlton’s “A Thousand Miles” combines two popular themes: love and travel. In the song, Carlton sings about walking a thousand miles to see her beloved.

The song came out on Carlton’s “Be Not Nobody” album in 2002 and it has become her signature song. Carlton herself wrote the song, and she said it was inspired by her crush on a fellow student, who is now a well-known actor.

7. “Promised Land” — Chuck Berry

When you’ve got California on your mind, you shouldn’t think of getting there without listening to “Promised Land” by Chuck Berry. Berry wrote the song to the melody of the classic American folk song “Wabash Cannonball” for his “St. Louis to Liverpool” album.

The song was released in 1964 just after Berry was released from prison, and Berry wrote the song when he was locked up. In the song, the singer hopped on board a Greyhound bus in the city of Norfolk, Virginia, and headed west.

Life is sort of like its own kind of road trip, and that’s the theme that this Rascal Flatts song brings us. The lyrics point out that there’s a world that’s waiting outside of every darkened doorway. All you have to do is open the door and explore it and the blues won’t haunt you anymore.

It’s possible that “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” by The Proclaimers is one of the catchiest and most energizing songs ever. This song was written by identical twin brothers from Scotland named Charlie and Craig Ried, and once you get the song in your head, it’s hard to forget it.

The song speaks about being willing to travel to the ends of the earth to be with someone.

11. “America” — Simon & Garfunkel

Paul Simon composed and wrote “America” to be performed by himself and his musical partner, Art Garfunkel. The song is about two young lovers who decide to hitchhike their way across America. Supposedly , the song was inspired when Paul Simon took a road trip in 1964 with his girlfriend at the time, Kathy Chitty.

The road trip Simon took with Chitty took five days and they drove across the country together.

12. “Some Beach” — Blake Shelton

The Blake Shelton song “Some Beach” is all about the beach, but the lyrics also reference driving down the interstate and singing Jimmy Buffet’s “Margaritaville.” This epic song was released on Shelton’s “Barn & Grill” album in July 2004.

“Some Beach” addresses the issues we can face when we travel to get to our vacation destination. They include being flipped the bird in traffic and being at a dentist’s office all day.

13. “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” — Cyndi Lauper

Is it even possible for a group of young women to take off for an adventure or vacation and not sing “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper? The song was actually written by a man, who released it in 1979. However, it’s Lauper’s version that is so famous.

In the 1980s, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” was a worldwide hit, and it’s considered to be Cyndi Lauper’s signature song.

14. “Fly Away” — Lenny Kravitz

Lenny Kravitz wrote “Fly Away” for his “5” album, which was released in 1998. The song hit the number 12 spot on the U.S. charts, and it was a hit around the world.

The country duo Florida Georgia Line released the bro-country song “Cruise” to iTunes in 2012, and the song became even more famous when it was remixed by the rapper Nelly in 2013.

“Chillin’ It” is a song that was released independently by Cole Swindell as a digital download in March 2013. Just a few months later, Swindell signed his first record deal, and the song was included on Swindell’s debut album.

It’s hard to know if this song could still be a big hit in the “Me Too” era, but it sure is catchy and fun.

19. “Ramblin’ Man” — Hank Williams

Hank Williams was one of the most influential and significant songwriters in the United States. Williams wrote “Ramblin’ Man” and released it in 1951 on the B side to another song. However, “Ramblin’ Man” ended up being the most well-known song.

This song speaks about a man who can’t settle down with the love of his life because he can’t control his wanderlust. He’s apologetic but says she just has to learn to deal with a Ramblin’ Man.

20. “End of the Line” — The Traveling Wilburys

In the latter part of the 1980s, five music legends created a supergroup called The Traveling Wilburys. The men in the group were Bob Dylan, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty, George Harrison, and Jeff Lynn. Unfortunately, the group was only able to release a single album before the death of Roy Orbison .

“End of the Line” was on that album, and the song talks about how everything will “work out fine” as they head down the highway together.

21. “Cake by the Ocean” — DNCE

The DNCE song “Cake by the Ocean” talks about two of our favorite things: cake and the ocean. Because why not? The theme of the song is not to walk around sad, but to treat like like you’re having cake by the ocean and licking cake frosting from your fingertips.

The song was released by DNCE’s debut album titled “EP” in September 2015. The band also included the song on their self-titled debut studio album, “DNCE.”

22. “On the Road Again” — Willie Nelson

One of the most popular songs ever written by Willie Nelson is his classic “On the Road Again.” This song was so popular that it won Willie the Grammy Award for Best Country Song the year after he released it.

Willie wrote the song on an airplane’s barf bag after movie producer Jerry Schatzberg asked him to write something about what it’s like to be on the road as a musician. The song was in Willie’s movie “Honeysuckle Rose.”

“Toes” is the third single from “The Foundation,” the band’s 2008 debut studio album. “Toes” was their second song that hit the top of the U.S. charts.

31. “Road Trippin'” — Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers released “Road Trippin'” on their hit album “Californication.” The song was the fifth and last single on the album, and it’s a travel song that has earned a place on countless road trip music lists.

The song tells the story of a band road trip that was taken by Anthony Kiedis, Flea, and John Frusciante when they drove up the coast road from Lost Angeles to Big Sur.

32. “Leaving on a Jet Plane” — Peter, Paul, and Mary

I’ve collected some of the best travel songs from the 1930s until today in this list. Musical genres range from pop and dance to rock, punk, and many others. So no matter what type of music you like, there should be something in it for you. The songs in the list below either talk about a place or the experience of travelling.

Jet Set Jams: The 13 Best Songs About Travel

That’s a very different exercise than the best songs for travel , this isn’t a ‘play list for the road’ it’s about borrowing someone else’s poetry to describe the travel experience. There’s no question that George Gershwin didn’t write Rhapsody in Blue to be about travel, but it’s equally clear that the 1924 composition has become inextricably linked with United Airlines.

What songs most evoke travel for you and are missing from my list? Which ones here are new to you?

The 13 best travel songs: Iggy Pop – The Passenger . This 1977 classic resulted from Iggy Pop travelling with David Bowie on tour in North America and Europe. Reportedly he didn’t have a license and the two drove around in Bowie’s car. Although it’s also said to be loosely based on a Jim Morrison poem.

The song features in the trailer for Up in the Air and in promos for Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown . There’s probably nothing more evocative of travel.

Paul Kelly – Sydney from a 727 . I first discovered Australian singer-songwriter Paul Kelly on a visit to my family Down Under over 25 years ago. I was instantly a fan. He’s been a member of the Australian Recording Industry Association Hall of Fame for nearly 20 years, though a virtual unknown in the States though he’s toured here.

Listening to Sydney from a 727 (which was also recorded as being from a 747), you can almost picture coming in for approach off the ocean (“I can see Bondi through my window way off to the right”) while capturing the spirit to take off in search of something (“And quit your job on the spot / Bought that ticket yeah spent the lot”). While no song quite captures the landing sequence quite like this one:

And the captain says belt up now we’ll be touching down in ten So I press my seat and I straighten up I fold my tray and I stash my cup As the red roofs are catching the first rays of the morning sun

The Animals – We Gotta Get Out of This Place . It’s an anthem that speaks to almost everyone, because everyone wants change. It was popular with soliders in Vietnam, with high school students who can’t wait to get out on their own, and with travelers who need to travel and feel cooped up when they’re at ‘home’.

The Proclaimers – I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) . As if taking a journey, taking a long arduous journey, to make your way to someone wasn’t enough someone once actually walked 1000 miles to convince his girlfriend to marry him . It turns out the journey wasn’t a real precondition of marriage and she was joking, but he did it anyway.

David Byrne – A Million Miles Away . No, this singer who once led the Talking Heads isn’t talking about what you have to go through to earn lifetime elite status .

But he is singing about the need to get away — travel far, far away — and become someone else, and be seen as someone else (“A toad is a prince in someone else’s eyes And you can’t tell a man by his clothes”).

Simon & Garfunkel – Homeward Bound . Is there any other song that’s truly the business traveler’s anthem? Waking up in the middle of the night, after being on the road for weeks at a time, and wondering what city you’re in you grab your phone because a weather app is on the home screen. And it tells you what city you’re in.

I’m sitting in the railway station. Got a ticket to my destination. On a tour of one-night stands my suitcase and guitar in hand. …Every day’s an endless stream Of cigarettes and magazines. And each town looks the same to me, the movies and the factories And every stranger’s face I see reminds me that I long to be, Homeward bound

Johnny Cash – I’ve Been Everywhere . Originally an Australian country song which named that country’s towns, it’s amazing the song has been made to work for Singapore, Belgium, Canada and any number of other places too.

With all the US cities Johnny Cash has been to — Waterloo, Kalamazoo, Kansas City, Sioux City, Cedar City, Dodge City, what a pity — I hope he’s saved up his miles and points because he could really use an international vacation.

George Gershwin – Rhapsody in Blue . Gershwin’s classic is more United Airlines now than anything else, at least to a traveler. The original composition from the tunnel connecting United’s B and C concourses at Chicago O’Hare is a riff on Rhapsody in Blue .

Phil Collins – Take Me Home . Maybe the song isn’t actually about going home. And maybe it’s a protest song against involuntary confinement in mental institutions. But for me it’s about longing for home, being on the road so long that you can hardly remember it but home is still your true North. (.. But, seriously.)

There’s a fire that’s been burning Right outside my door I can’t see but I feel it And it helps to keep me warm

…So take, take me home ‘Cause I don’t remember

Elvis Costello – Peace Love & Understanding . As I walk through this wicked world, searching for light in the darkness of insanity, I ask myself “Is all hope lost?”

It may not immediately seem like a travel song, but travel is about connecting with and engaging people and culture different from your own and yet building a common bond — of peace, love, and understanding. And it helps that the song was featured in Lost in Translation too.

Frank Sinatra – Come Fly With Me . Come fly with me let’s fly let’s fly away. It spent 5 weeks at number one, and just as I want to claim George Clooney as one of us for Up in the Air we’ve got to lay claim to Sinatra…

Ricky Nelson – Travelin’ Man . This 1961 classic shows its age, there’s no question it objectifies women, the song is about each city in the world in which he has a girl. But he clearly gets around .. to Mexico, Berlin, Hong Kong not to mention Hawaii and Alaska. But since its 1961, there’s no music video so it’s safe for work!

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Around The World (or maybe Aeroplane or Road Trippin’). When I first started thinking about this list it didn’t occur to me that The Red Hot Chili Peppers would be on it, but they have several songs about travel, from the plane to car but Around the World is the most meta and in some sense follows Elvis Costello with lines like “life is beautiful around the world” and indeed it is.

So what am I missing? What belongs on this list?

You missed a few. Chuck Berry’s promised Land, grateful dead staple as well as Truckin.’

I usually sing the John Denver penned, Peter, Paul and Mary sung version of ‘Leaving on a Jet Plane’ before long trips.

For us, this is for instance “We don’t talk anymore” – we traveled Vietnam for 3 months and some local in every single village, town and city played it at least once. We turned crazy, yet it’s today a part of the experience. “From Paris to Berlin” is a song from Danish dance-pop group Infernal. 

It is their signature song and was their first to chart across countries in Europe.

It was the UK’s sixth biggest selling single of 2006. 

Ahead of the 2006 FIFA World Cup, the song was re-recorded for England fans, changing the title to ‘From London to Berlin’, to support the English Football team. 

33. “Brazil” by Declan McKenna

“Brazil” comes from English singer-songwriter Declan McKenna for his debut album and remains his most streamed song to date. 

The song was written about the 2014 FIFA World Cup, the poverty in Brazil and the corruption surrounding Sepp Blatter and FIFA.  

Despite being released in 2015, the song has experienced a recent revival after becoming a trending sound on TikTok in 2022. 

34. “These Streets” by Paolo Nutini

“These Streets” is from Paolo Nutini’s debut album of the same name, which peaked at No 3 on the UK album charts. 

Most of the songs on the album are inspired by Nutini’s girlfriend, Teri Brogan.

The album was praised for its honesty, lyrics and catchy melodies. 

The album and its follow-up, Sunny Side Up, have both been certified quintuple platinum.

35. “On My Way” by Phil Collins

No songs quite capture the essence of going on a journey like those on Disney soundtracks, and this one from Genesis frontman Phil Collins is no exception. 

The lyrics are about traveling to somewhere new, ‘with blue skies ahead’ and ‘loving every step’ they are taking, feeling ready to meet new friends.

The song features on the soundtrack to Brother Bear , and Collins was also involved in the production of the soundtrack of Tarzan . 

36. “I Walk The Line” by Johnny Cash

This song was written and recorded by American country singer-songwriter Johnny Cash.

Much of Cash’s music is melancholy, focusing on themes of misery, struggle and pain.

“I Walk the Line” remained on the record charts for over 43 weeks, and sold over two million copies. 

37. “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” by Nancy Sinatra 

“These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” was written by Lee Hazlewood and recorded by American singer Nancy Sinatra, daughter of world-famous performer Frank Sinatra. 

The song reached the No 1 spot in the UK and US, and has been covered since by numerous artists.

It has been described as ‘folk-rock’ in genre. 

38. “Sail Away” by David Gray

“Sail Away” was the fourth single from Gray’s fourth album, White Ladder. 

The lyrics ask their lover to sail away with them, to escape from reality. 

As is common in songs about travel, the ‘journey’ alluded to in the lyrics can be read metaphorically, an analogy for the journey of a relationship, as well as literally. 

39. “Keep Driving” by Harry Styles

Harry Styles is one of the biggest pop stars in the world right now, having found success as part of One Direction, one of the biggest boy bands in history.

“Keep Driving” comes from Styles’ most recent album, Harry’s House, which was released in 2022. 

The album received the best first week of sales in Styles’ career, reflecting his consistent upward trajectory as a solo artist. 

The lyrics seem random and non-sensical at points, but the general theme is about wanting to ‘keep driving’ with someone and get away from reality. 

40. “All Around the World” by Justin Bieber, Ludacris

“All Around The World” comes from another of the biggest male pop artists of this generation, Justin Bieber. 

The song can be classed as a Eurodance track, and features similar instrumentation to tracks by Usher, Britney Spears and Chris Brown.

The lyrics are about the universality of love, how ‘people all around the world’ are wanting to be loved. 

41. “Maps” by Maroon 5

In “Maps”, Maroon 5 describe a relationship using travel as a metaphor, describing a ‘map’ that always leads back to their lover.

It was the lead single for their fifth album, V, released in 2014.

Some criticized the song for being too similar to their previous lead single, Payphone. 

The song reached No 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. 

42. “American Boy” by Estelle, Kanye West

“American Boy” was written by Estelle, West, will.i.am, Estelle’s mentor John Legend and some other collaborators. 

John Legend provides additional vocals. 

Legend had suggested the idea of creating a song about an American man to Estelle, and the song describes wanting to go on a trip, wanting to see New York and LA. 

43. “Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman

“Fast Car” comes from Chapman’s self-titled debut album.

Chapman is instantly recognisable from her deep-toned voice. 

“Fast Car” is about saving up money and driving away in a ‘fast car’ to ‘finally see what it means to be living’ outside of their town. 

The song plays on classic themes of being in a relationship and wanting to escape a small town to explore the world, believing they are destined for better things.

44. “Empire State of Mind” by Alicia Keys, Jay-Z

“Empire State of Mind” can be read as a love letter to New York, describing various neighborhoods in the city.

The song features a music sample of “Love on a Two-Way Street” by the Moments. 

The title, “Empire State of Mind”, can be read as a reference to Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind”, as well as a wordplay on the iconic Empire State building, a landmark in the city. 

45. “International Love” by Pitbull, Chris Brown

Pitbull calls himself “Mr Worldwide”, so it’s fitting that he would write a song about traveling internationally and meeting women.

The song was released as a single for Pitbull’s sixth album, Planet Pit, in 2011.

The lyrics list various locations across the world and describe the excitement of meeting beautiful women, but determining that there is ultimately ‘nothing like Miami’s heat’. 

46. “Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane

“Somewhere Only We Know” comes from British alternative rock band Keane, as a single from their debut album Hopes and Fears. 

The song remains their most well-known song, and was covered by Lily Allen for the 2013 John Lewis Christmas advert. 

It was inspired by David Bowie’s “Heroes”. 

The song’s lyrics are about the narrator wanting to take his lover and go ‘somewhere only [they] know’.

47. “Chasing Cars” by Snow Patrol

“Chasing Cars” was written and recorded by Northern Irish-Scottish alt-rock band Snow Patrol in 2006. 

The song gained popularity after being used in the second season finale of Grey’s Anatomy.

It remains their biggest-selling single to date. 

The lyrics are about ‘chasing cars’ but only ‘around [their] heads’. 

48. “Party in the U.S.A.” by Miley Cyrus

Despite being an iconic Miley song, “Party in the USA” was actually written by another well-known pop musician, Jessie J, alongside Claud Kelly and Dr. Luke.

The song was originally set for Jessie, but they decided it wasn’t edgy enough for her. 

The lyrics were reinterpreted to be about Cyrus’s move from Nashville to Hollywood. 

Despite only being included to make up tracks on the album, the song was a hit for Cyrus and it reached the No 2 spot in the Billboard Hot 100. 

The lyrics are about the nerves and excitement of getting off the plane in Hollywood, seeing the famous sights and going out to party.

50. “Lost in Japan” by Shawn Mendes, Zedd

“Lost in Japan” was written for Mendes’ self-titled third album, and was later remixed by Zedd.

The song has funk, pop and R&B elements, resembling the works of Justin Timberlake.

The lyrics are about the singer asking a romantic interest if they have plans that night, because he is only a couple of hundred miles from Japan and can travel there by plane. 

51. “Holiday” by Confidence Man

“Confidence Man” are an indie electronic pop band from Australia, and released this song “Holiday” for their album Tilt in 2021. 

The song is upbeat and energetic, with the lyrics being about going on ‘holiday’ and ‘getting paid’. 

This single summarizes the excitement ahead of going away on holiday, and now has over 2 million streams on Spotify.

52. “Barcelona” by Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran is known for the story-telling, visual element of his songwriting, and this track is no exception.

“Barcelona” is about imagining he is away in Barcelona with a lover, ‘dancing in the streets’ and ‘drinking Sangria’. 

The song includes a lot of Spanish words, which apparently ‘don’t make a lot of sense’ but are more just random Spanish words that Sheeran knew and wanted to throw into the song. 

53. “Hotel Room Service” by Pitbull

Another Pitbull song, “Hotel Room Service” is about encouraging someone to ‘forget about’ their boyfriend and meet them in the hotel room. 

The song samples “Push the Feeling On” by Nightcrawlers and lyrics from Jay-Z’s “I Just Wanna Love U”. 

An official remix was released, including vocals from ex-Pussycat Dolls singer Nicole Scherzinger. 

54. “Club Tropicana” by Wham!

“Club Tropicana” was written by Wham! Duo George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley.

The song was inspired by the duo’s excitement for the burgeoning New Romantics club scene. 

“Club Tropicana” imagines a magical paradise of a club scene, where ‘drinks are free’ and the whole night is a ‘holiday’.

The song is heavily associated with going on holiday, emulating the mood and heat of the tropics. 

55. “Summer Holiday” by Cliff Richard

“Summer Holiday” was written for the soundtrack of a film of the same name, which was released in 1963.

The album topped the UK charts for 14 weeks. 

The lyrics summarize the excitement of going on a holiday in summertime, a chance to get away and ‘do the things they always wanted to’.

Skrillex – “With You, Friends (Long Drive)”

From 2010’s breakout  Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites  EP, this melodic song about travel showcases a softer side of Skrillex , a man we all know to be diverse in 2018, but who was best known for bass-fueled insanity eight years ago. Listen for his beautiful singing voice in the glitchy melody. Put this one on when you’re feeling sentimental for your best buds.

Swedish House Mafia – “Miami 2 Ibiza” Feat. Tinnie Tempah

Turn on the bright lights and get ready to put your hands up. Nobody does big-room festival dance songs as well as Swedish House Mafia , and no two cities encapsulate the glamour and energy of that movement as Miami and Ibiza. Put this song on when you want to travel to the party from anywhere in the world.

The Klaxons – “Isle of Her”

Row, there’s only seven more miles to go. This song about travel is no ordinary 747. It’s space-age bleeps and bloops bring you to interstellar heights previously unexperienced by human kind. It’s deep and atmospheric, the kind of magical meandering only Maya Jane Coles can offer. It’s easy to get lost in her ghostly vocals. This is the kind of sound you’ll want to curl up in and stay cozy with all night.

Petit Biscuit – “On The Road”

Keeping in the interstellar vibe, Petit Biscuit draws us “On The Road” with alluring atmosphere and inspires us to march ever onward with a sweetly-thumping beat. This song will keep your spirits high and your mood at an even keel, no matter what surprises lay on the horizon. It’s also one of the songs from his debut LP  Presence  that features his own French-accented singing.

Maceo Plex – “Kepler’s Journey”

Care for some IDM on your journey? Maceo Plex is a bold deep house and techno producer, but this tune from 2017’s experimental concept LP  Solar  dives deep into the outer-reaches of sound and space. The track is named after German mathematician, astronomer and astrologer Johannes Kepler best known for his laws of planetary motion. See if this tune doesn’t take you places.

Gryffin – “Heading Home” feat. Josef Salvat

Every good trip inevitably comes to an end, but that can sometimes be the best part of the journey. After all, is there any better feeling than crashing on your own bed after a long journey, your head swimming with memories of the adventure you just shared alongside friends old and new? A Reminder That Joni Mitchell’s Blue is the Ultimate Summer Travel Album

A couple of weeks ago, I booked a summer trip to Mallorca and Menorca , two of the four main Balearic islands in Spain. Since then, I have done approximately zero things to prepare for my travels except listen to Joni Mitchell ’s legendary 1971 album Blue over and over again, specifically the fitting lyrics from her song “California”: “So I bought me a ticket, I caught a plane to Spain, went to a party down a red dirt road / there were lots of pretty people there, reading Rolling Stone , reading Vogue .”

Anyone who knows me can confirm this anecdote to be true. As a lifelong Joni fan (we’re on a first-name basis here), I never miss an opportunity to soundtrack my life to her songs. But as I was revisiting Blue yet again, in the leadup to both my Spain trip and the album’s 53rd anniversary today (!), I was struck by just how much Joni’s travel-inspired lyrics continue to resonate even 53 years later. Maybe especially 53 years later. Listening to it now, as we’re heading into yet another glorious summer travel season, I can’t help thinking it’s the throwback travel vibe we all need to carry with us over the next few months.

Given its name and its blue cover, many people tend to think Blue is a somber album, or a sad breakup album. But while it is indeed filled with raw vulnerability and despair, and it does cover the dissolution of a relationship, it’s also a groundbreaking travel tale at its core, one that documents the singer’s quest to find herself on the road during her tumultuous twenties (it came out when she was 27). The New York Times even called it “the heroine’s journey that Joseph Campbell forgot to map out.” Joni wrote many of the songs on Blue when she was wandering around Europe solo, after breaking off a relationship with her then-boyfriend, British singer-songwriter Graham Nash. They’d been living together in Los Angeles’ woodsy Laurel Canyon , which at the time was the beating heart and soul of late ’60s folk music. Joni and Graham appeared to be the ultimate California golden couple, but she was restless and apprehensive of the seemingly perfect domestic life that was unfolding before her eyes. In her cult-favorite documentary Joni Mitchell: A Woman of Heart and Mind , released in 2003, she explains that she didn’t want to end up like both of her grandmothers, who were creatives at heart but weren’t able to follow their dreams due to domestic obligations:

“I just started thinking, my grandmother was a frustrated poet and musician. She kicked the kitchen door off of the hinges on the farm. And I thought about my paternal grandmother who wept for the last time in her life at 14 behind some barn, because she wanted a piano and said, ‘Dry your eyes, you silly girl, you’ll never have a piano,’” she reflects in the documentary. “And then I thought, maybe I’m the one that got the gene that has to make it happen for these two women. As much as I loved and cared for Graham, I just thought, I’m going to end up like my grandmother, kicking the door off the hinges. And I’d better not. It broke my heart.”

Thus began the journey that would come to define Blue . Joni bought a plane ticket to Europe, where she traveled around France, Spain, and Greece. She was in Greece when she sent Graham a telegram letting him know it was officially over, writing, “If you hold sand too tightly in your hand, it will run through your fingers. Love, Joan.” Against that backdrop, the album kicks off with the song “All I Want,” where she sings, “I am on a lonely road and I am traveling, traveling, traveling, traveling, looking for something, what can it be?” Later in the song, she switches the lyrics to, “I am on a lonely road and I am traveling / Looking for the key to set me free.” From that point on, the message is clear: Joni is searching for answers. For meaning. For purpose beyond the expected. And she’s using travel to help her find those things.

In “California,” in addition to attending that “party down a red dirt road” in Spain, we find her “sitting in a park in Paris, France,” wondering what it would be like to live there (not ideal, she decides, as it’s “too old and cold and settled in its ways”). And in “Carey,” we find her living with a new man, an American hippie named Cary Raditz, in the famously countercultural Matala Caves in Crete, Greece. The beach caves were a true backpacker haven during the late ’60s, and Joni, a chic and glamorous California girl at heart, only lasted so long before she started craving her “clean white linen and fancy French cologne” back in her more urban comfort zone. But before she and Raditz parted ways, they had a lovely, breezy time, filled with bottles upon bottles of wine at the Mermaid Café (a fictional seaside bar), and nights spent listening to “scratchy rock n’ roll beneath the Matala moon.” One of my favorite verses on the whole album is from this song:

To me, this verse perfectly captures travel as it should be: carefree and serendipitous. Filled with rounds with new friends, clinking glasses by the sea, and no itinerary except “laughing and toasting to nothing.” Ultimately, the Mermaid Café represents my travel nirvana: a place where time slows down and wine never stops flowing and freedom prevails. A place where all of the “freaks and soldiers” in the bar are down for a good time, and the only thing that matters is who is buying the next round…and will it be red, white, or rosé. This, to me, is what travel is all about: an appreciation for the simple act of being alive.

I think we can all agree that the metaphorical Mermaid Café is a lot harder to find these days. With the popularity of Instagram has come the popularity of geotags and influencer-approved itineraries and “doing it for the ’gram.” In many ways, travel has become more about hitting the hotspots than being open to the search. More about the plan than the possibility. And I can’t stop asking myself: When did it all become so…mapped out? So scheduled? So hyperconnected and influenced by IG?

There was a time in my life when travel was genuinely filled with Mermaid Café moments. The year was 2006. I was studying abroad in England for my junior year of college, and my best friend Zoë—also a Joni fanatic—and I made new friends everywhere we went. We backpacked all around Europe together that year, popping into random bars and hostels, guided by little but our intuition and a couple of research pit stops at Internet cafés (social media was not yet a thing). And we always managed to emerge with a new pack of travel friends along the way.

Our freewheeling vibe makes even more sense now in retrospect than it did then, as we spent that entire year listening to Blue whenever and wherever we could. Of course it infiltrated into our very essence! We’d plop ourselves down in parks and wildflower fields for indulgent listens, plugging a Y adapter into one of our iPods so we could take in the music at the same time as we stared up at the sky. I distinctly remember listening to the entirety of Blue lying in the fields outside Stonehenge, and on the overnight ferry from Italy to Greece. The waters were rough that night, and we felt vaguely seasick—but we knew a little Blue moment would help us through. Joni was our role model, our guide to the magic of soul-searching travel. And with her as our inspiration, we remained open to happenstance, open to the possibility that travel could help us find something we didn’t even know we were looking for.

That was 18 years ago. And now, as we celebrate Blue ’s 53rd anniversary today, I’m still convinced—perhaps now more than ever before—that Blue is the ultimate travel blueprint. Joni set off on her European adventure when she found herself at a crossroads, unsure of her future but sure that she wanted to veer away from her past. But she likely knew she just needed to get out of her comfort zone, and let travel take care of the rest. And that it did. Not only did Blue go on to become a musical masterpiece (Apple Music just included it on its list of the 100 Best Albums of All Time , following many previous awards), Joni also escaped the fate of her grandmothers and carved her own creative path.

I’ll be thinking of her as I “catch a plane to Spain” soon enough myself. Tempted as I will be to map out the entire trip, and research all of the places I “should” go, I’m going to channel my inner Joni and let the unknown lead the way. Who knows? Maybe I’ll stumble upon my own Mermaid Café once again, where I will laugh and toast to nothing...and then have another round.

NEW YORK – Eagles singer Don Henley filed a lawsuit in New York on Friday seeking the return of his handwritten notes and song lyrics from the band’s hit “Hotel California” album.

The civil complaint filed in Manhattan federal court comes after prosecutors in March abruptly dropped criminal charges midway through a trial against three collectibles experts accused of scheming to sell the documents.

The Eagles co-founder has maintained the pages were stolen and had vowed to pursue a lawsuit when the criminal case was dropped against rare books dealer Glenn Horowitz, former Rock & Roll Hall of Fame curator Craig Inciardi and rock memorabilia seller Edward Kosinski.

“Hotel California,” released by the Eagles in 1977, is the third-biggest selling album of all time in the U.S.

“These 100 pages of personal lyric sheets belong to Mr. Henley and his family, and he has never authorized defendants or anyone else to peddle them for profit,” Daniel Petrocelli, Henley’s lawyer, said in an emailed statement Friday.

According to the lawsuit, the handwritten pages remain in the custody of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office, which declined to comment Friday on the litigation.

Lawyers for Kosinski and Inciardi dismissed the legal action as baseless, noting the criminal case was dropped after it was determined that Henley misled prosecutors by withholding critical information.

“Don Henley is desperate to rewrite history,” Shawn Crowley, Kosinski’s lawyer, said in an emailed statement. “We look forward to litigating this case and bringing a lawsuit against Henley to hold him accountable for his repeated lies and misuse of the justice system.”

Inciardi’s lawyer, Stacey Richman, said in a separate statement that the lawsuit attempts to “bully” and “perpetuate a false narrative.”

A lawyer for Horowitz, who isn’t named as a defendant as he doesn’t claim ownership of the materials, didn't respond to an email seeking comment.

During the trial, the men's lawyers argued that Henley gave the lyrics pages decades ago to a writer who worked on a never-published Eagles biography and later sold the handwritten sheets to Horowitz. He, in turn, sold them to Inciardi and Kosinski, who started putting some of the pages up for auction in 2012.

The criminal case was abruptly dropped after prosecutors agreed that defense lawyers had essentially been blindsided by 6,000 pages of communications involving Henley and his attorneys and associates.

Prosecutors and the defense said they received the material only after Henley and his lawyers made a last-minute decision to waive their attorney-client privilege shielding legal discussions.

Judge Curtis Farber, who presided over the nonjury trial that opened in late February, said witnesses and their lawyers used attorney-client privilege “to obfuscate and hide information that they believed would be damaging” and that prosecutors “were apparently manipulated.”
