Ogier wins WRC Safari Rally to head Toyota’s Kenya sweep

kenya safari rally 2023 winner

By RACER Staff June 25, 2023 10:59 AM

By RACER Staff | June 25, 2023 10:59 AM ET

Sebastien Ogier defied teammate Kalle Rovanpera’s charge to head home a dream 1-2-3-4 finish for Toyota Gazoo Racing on a dramatic final day at WRC Safari Rally Kenya.

Ogier (above) , who’s chosen to run only a limited FIA World Rally Championship program, recorded his third victory from just five starts so far this season. But his rally very nearly unraveled in Sunday’s second special stage, Oserian 1, when a patch of Kenya’s infamous, soft and deep fesh-fesh sand sent his GR Yaris Rally1 wide on a right-hand turn.

The Frenchman, fighting hard to recover time lost to Rovanpera in the day’s rocky opener, Malewa 1, clipped a tree and ripped off his car’s entire rear tailgate. Amazingly, he still won the stage and made all the time back, then patched the gap using a trash-can liner to keep dust at bay in the following Hell’s Gate 1.

More permanent repairs in service did not conclude the drama, however, as all four Yaris crews completed the penultimate stage with dust-induced overheating engines. Ogier, one of the hardest hit, saw his lead reduced to just 9.2s before the rally-closing, bonus points-paying Wolf Power Stage finale. There, where the eight-time WRC champ’s run was again not without incident, arriving at the flying finish with a cracked windshield from a flicked-up rock.

Despite the late incident, he was able to secure the win by 6.7s and spearhead Toyota’s second clean sweep in as many Safari Rallies.

Kenya’s President, William Ruto, presented Ogier and co-driver Vincent Landais with their trophies, commemorating Ogier’s second win at the event, amid stunning scenery at Hell’s Gate.

“Unbelievable! Look at that, even on the Power Stage I got a stone on the windscreen,” said Ogier. “We had a lot of issues to face, but it couldn’t have been a more comfortable rally for us in terms of pace. A lot of misfortune but we brought it home.”

Finishing in second place felt like a personal victory for defending WRC champ Rovanpera, who extended his 2023 drivers’ championship lead to 37 points after round seven of 13.

“You always want to fight for the win, but we did our best starting first car on the road, so regarding that I think it’s not fully bad,” noted the 22-year-old Finn. “Good points for the season anyway.”

Takamoto Katsuta’s hopes of surpassing Toyota teammate Elfyn Evans and achieving a third Safari Rally podium vanished when his Yaris’s hybrid unit stopped working, sapping vital performance. The Japanese driver settled for fourth overall, 25.3s back from Evans, with Ogier and Rovanpera almost three minutes up the road from the third-placed Welshman.

Dani Sordo overcame power steering failure in his Hyundai i20 N Rally1 during Sunday’s third stage to finish an isolated fifth at the end of a testing weekend for Hyundai Motorsport, which now trails Toyota by 42 points in the WRC manufacturers’ title race.

Of the other Hyundais, early podium challenger Esapekka Lappi was way down the order after being plagued by transmission issues in his i20 N, while Thierry Neuville, recovering from suspension failure on Friday, could only roll home eighth, almost 25 minutes off the lead. The Belgian did take the five bonus points for winning the Power Stage and maintains second in the WRC standings, but closing down a 37-point deficit to Rovanpera will be a tough ask.

Tire troubles earlier in the rally prevented M-Sport Ford Puma Rally1 drivers Ott Tanak and Pierre-Louis Loubet from mounting any form of attack. They finished sixth and seventh respectively, with Tanak taking the slim consolation of second-fastest time through the Power Stage.

In WRC2, the second tier of international rallying, Kajetan Kajetanowicz secured his second Safari Rally class win in as many years with a masterful drive in the typically challenging conditions.

The Pole cruised to Sunday afternoon’s finish in his Skoda Fabia Evo more than 11 minutes in front of nearest-placed challenger Martin Prokop, moving from ninth to fourth in the WRC2 standings as a result.

Kajetanowicz had battled with M-Sport Ford youngster Gregoire Munster through Friday and Saturday, but found himself comfortably clear at the top when the Fiesta Mk II driver pulled over with a mechanical issue. A measured run through Sunday’s closing six special stages was all that was needed to bring home the victory and finish ninth overall.

“We did it again! It’s an amazing feeling. It seemed to be easy, but it wasn’t. Thank you to my team and Maciej — I think we did quite a good job,” said Kajetanowicz, referencing his co-driver Maciej Szczepaniak.

Completing the overall top 10, Oliver Solberg’s Skoda finished just 30.6s behind Kajetanowicz’s similar car, but with only seven rounds counting toward the WRC2 championship, the 21-year-old Swede had elected not to register for class points in Kenya.

The FIA World Rally Championship returns to Europe next month when the super-fast gravel roads of Rally Estonia host round eight, July 20-23.

Safari Rally Kenya: Day 3 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing closing on another Safari triumph

2023.6.24 (Sat)

TOYOTA GAZOO Racing World Rally Team holds the top four places going into the final day of Safari Rally Kenya as it looks to secure another superb result on the epic event.

Car 17 (Sébastien Ogier, Vincent Landais)

Sébastien Ogier continues to lead in search of his second Safari success, with an advantage of 16.7 seconds over last year’s winner Kalle Rovanperä. Elfyn Evans is third and Takamoto Katsuta fourth.

Saturday was the longest and most demanding day of the rally, with a trio of stages near Lake Elmenteita to be tackled twice. As on Friday, Ogier made an excellent start to win the opening Soysambu stage by 7.6 seconds – despite knocking a tyre off a rim – and briefly increase his lead to the 30s mark, before Rovanperä was fastest in the subsequent two tests.

It was a similar story in the afternoon, beginning with Ogier once again going comfortably quickest in Soysambu (this time by 6.4s). He further increased his lead to 32.0s in the next stage, which was won by Katsuta. Rain then brought dramatic scenes to Saturday’s closing Sleeping Warrior for the third year in succession: Rovanperä was quickest by 13.1s over Evans and 15.3s over Ogier, who lost some time right at the end of the stage with two further tyre deflations in the difficult conditions.

Evans had dropped from third to fourth at the start of the day after his car slowed following a watersplash, but later battled for the final podium place with the TGR WRC Challenge Program-supported entry of Katsuta. After regaining the position in Sleeping Warrior 2, Evans is 16.7s ahead of Katsuta, who has 1m12.3s in hand over fifth place.

Quotes: Jari-Matti Latvala (Team Principal) “We can be really pleased with today and it’s amazing to once again have our four cars in these positions after Saturday in Kenya, just as we did last year. Of course, we hope that we can achieve the same great result again but we still have one day to go and we can’t take anything for granted. The final stage, Sleeping Warrior, was again very slippery and eventful so we were really satisfied to see that all the cars came through that OK without major problems. The gaps between some of our drivers are not so big and we always want to see fair fights between them, but the most important thing is that we see all four cars at the finish tomorrow in the top four places.”

Kalle Rovanperä (Driver car 69) “The whole of today was a big battle and it’s not easy to find the balance between trying to fight for the win here while also being on for really good points at the moment compared to our championship rivals. Seb was pushing really hard but our plan was to drive smooth and not push too much in the rough places. I was maybe not so brave in the first stage this morning but after that I think we managed to stay on the pace and out of trouble. When the rain came in the last one it was a proper challenge just to stay on the road, but we could again take some time there so it was a good day overall. It’s pretty special for the team to be in this position going into tomorrow. It will be quite a long and tough day, but we’ll try to make it a clean one because the points are important for us.”

Elfyn Evans (Driver car 33) “It’s been a challenging day and we had a difficult start this morning. The feeling in the car was fine initially in the first stage but then we took on some water in the watersplash; maybe I didn’t take the best line into it. Then we unfortunately got a puncture in the Sleeping Warrior stage, so we had quite a lot of time loss this morning. In the afternoon, the first two stages were clean for me but Taka was on a big push: he was driving well and driving quickly. The conditions in the last stage were extreme and sometimes there was no grip at all, but we got through it with an OK time. There’s still a big task ahead of us tomorrow but hopefully all goes well and we can bring this result home for the team.”

Sébastien Ogier (Driver car 17) “We had a good morning with really good speed in the first stage, even though we lost a bit towards the end with a puncture. Then I was a bit more careful for the rest of the morning, especially in the last stage which was the roughest part of the rally and it was so easy to damage something there. In the afternoon I think we did a good job, and did everything we could in the first two stages. Then the last one was challenging for everyone with heavy rain and a lot of water on the road. I took it easy in those sections and just tried to manage. The most important thing is we’re still in the lead tonight. It’s not a big gap to Kalle now but hopefully we can have a smooth finish tomorrow and another result like this in Kenya for the team would be amazing.”

End of day three (Saturday): 1 Sébastien Ogier/Vincent Landais (Toyota GR YARIS Rally1 HYBRID) 2h43m49.2s 2 Kalle Rovanperä/Jonne Halttunen (Toyota GR YARIS Rally1 HYBRID) +16.7s 3 Elfyn Evans/Scott Martin (Toyota GR YARIS Rally1 HYBRID) +2m23.3s 4 Takamoto Katsuta/Aaron Johnston (Toyota GR YARIS Rally1 HYBRID) +2m40.0s 5 Dani Sordo/Cándido Carrera (Hyundai i20 N Rally1 HYBRID) +3m52.3s 6 Ott Tänak/Martin Järveoja (Ford Puma Rally1 HYBRID) +8m38.9s 7 Pierre-Louis Loubet/Nicolas Gilsoul (Ford Puma Rally1 HYBRID) +13m56.6s 8 Kajetan Kajetanowicz/Maciej Szczepaniak (Škoda Fabia Rally2 evo) +19m53.1s 9 Thierry Neuville/Martijn Wydaeghe (Hyundai i20 N Rally1 HYBRID) +24m06.2s 10 Oliver Solberg/Elliott Edmondson (Škoda Fabia Rally2 evo) +24m06.6s (Results as of 17:15 on Saturday, for the latest results please visit www.wrc.com )

What's next? The rally concludes on Sunday with another two loops of three stages around Lake Naivasha, separated by final service and totalling 74.38 competitive kilometres. The loop starts with a reworked version of the Malewa test last run in 2021 and ends with Hell’s Gate, the second pass of which will be the rally-ending Power Stage.

Following swiftly on from the World Rally Championship’s first pure asphalt round of 2024 comes the opening conventional gravel event: Rally Portugal.

A rally steeped in history, it was ranked fourth among DirtFish readers’ favorite events when we ran our poll at the end of last year. It should offer the best indication yet of this year’s pecking order on the loose – ultimately, where championships are won and lost.

So here is all the key information you need ahead of this crucial event.

Croatia Rally Entry List

Total 69 crews 9 Rally1 crews 40 Rally2 crews (39 WRC2) 9 Rally3 crews (9 WRC3)

Dani Sordo finished second in Portugal in 2023 and returns for his first WRC appearance of 2024

Nearly half of the nine-car Rally1 entry is made up of Toyotas as Toyota Gazoo Racing fields four entries for the first time this season. When Kalle Rovanperä opted to take a part-time role this year, Toyota noted that it could field both the reigning world champion and his predecessor Sébastien Ogier on some events – and that has now come to fruition.

Rovanperä, winner of the event for the past two years, and Ogier will each contest their third WRC rally of 2024, alongside team regulars Elfyn Evans and Takamoto Katsuta. It is Katsuta who is not on point-scoring duty this weekend, as Ogier and Rovanperä will look to take advantage of starting back in fifth and seventh on the road, respectively.

In the Hyundai camp, full-timers Thierry Neuville and Ott Tänak are joined by Dani Sordo. Making his first WRC start of the year, Sordo arrives on the back of taking in some stages of last month’s Rali Terras d’Aboboreira as a test, and has been on the podium in Portugal for each of the past three years. While Neuville is set to suffer from opening the road, Tänak’s fourth position should offer some advantage, while Sordo will have the benefit of the rest of the Rally1 field sweeping the road for him.

The top-class field is completed by M-Sport’s regular pairing of Adrien Fourmaux and Grégoire Munster. Fourmaux has to endure a start-position of fourth on the road, with Munster back in eighth.

Takamoto Katsuta will not score points in portugal, as Toyota fields four Yaris Rally1s for the first time in 2024

Among the 40-car entry of Rally2 machinery are an incredible 39 drivers looking to score points in WRC2. Of the current top 10 in the WRC2 standings, only two are not competing this weekend so those points are going to be harder than ever to come by.

All four 2024 WRC2 round winners to date will be in action. In the green corner, Toksport Škoda pairing Oliver Solberg, who won in Sweden, and Safari winner Gus Greensmith may start as favorites, given the Fabia RS Rally2’s prowess on gravel and their own liking for the loose. Indeed, they finished one-two on the event, in Greensmith’s favor, last year.

In the red corner, DG Sport Citroën duo Yohan Rossel (who won Monte Carlo) and Nikolay Gryazin (Croatia) will be putting Citroën’s gravel development work to the test. Rossel won in WRC2 on this rally two years ago, but the competition is stronger now.

Toyota is well represented, as Sami Pajari, Georg Linnamäe, Roope Korhonen and Jan Solans will all pilot the GR Yaris Rally2. The car will get its first examination at world level on a gravel rally after none were entered for the Safari in March.

Among those at the wheel of a Hyundai i20 N Rally2, Teemu Suninen is finally getting his 2024 WRC2 campaign under way. Five time WRC rally winner Kris Meeke will be in a similar car, fresh from winning the Rali Terras d’Aboboreira warm-up event. One driver who won’t be in a Hyundai is one-time WRC2 champion Emil Lindholm, who is skipping this event.

Pepe López switches from ŠkodaFabia to Ford Fiesta in WRC2 for Portugal

There will be a new name competing in a Ford Fiesta Rally2 on this event. Pepe López, who already has two WRC2 podiums to his name this year and lies fifth in the standings, has swapped his Škoda for the M-Sport-built machine. Reigning JWRC champion Will Creighton makes his third WRC2 start of the season in another example.

Elsewhere on the bulging entry list, the Toksport Škoda line-up also includes Pierre-Louis Loubet, who makes his first start in the WRC since leaving M-Sport’s Rally1 squad last year. Lauri Joona, Martin Prokop and Josh McErlean will also be piloting Fabia RS Rally2s, while Marco Bulacia is at the wheel of a Citroën.

Among the locals, two-time PWRC champion and Portuguese great Armindo Araújo leads the way in a Škoda. Reigning Portuguese champion Ricardo Teodósio drives a Hyundai, and José Pedro Fontes is Citroën-mounted.

As Portugal is not a round of the Junior World Rally Championship, there are only nine WRC3 entries for the event.

Czech driver Jan Černý, the Monte Carlo class winner, leads the largely Ford Fiesta Rally3-equipped field. Mexican Diego Domínguez Jr is back in action after a difficult start to the season, while Bruno Balacia, younger brother of Marco, is another JWRC driver getting some extra miles in on this event.

There are a trio of Renault Clio Rally3s entered into the class, headed by Frenchman Mattéo Chatillon, who has already finished second in class on both the Monte Carlo and Croatia Rallies this year.

Rally Portugal itinerary

A busy itinerary for this year’s Rally Portugal takes in more than 200 miles of competitive action, although the changes from last year are generally relatively small.

The action begins with a blast through the 1.8-mile Figueira da Foz superspecial stage on Thursday night before nearly 80 miles of tests on Friday. There are two loops of repeated stages – although not all in the same order – with only a tire-fitting zone in between as, just like Croatia Rally, crews will have to contend with there being no midday service.

Starting fifth on the road will do Kalle Rovanperä's victory chances no harm at all

The 11-mile Mortágua test bookends the day’s running (last year it was only run once). The crews will then tackle each of Lousã, a shortened version of Góis and the challenging Arganil twice, either side of fitting a new set of boots.

Saturday is the longest leg of the rally, at some 90 miles. It comprises two loops of four stages, with lunchtime service in between, before the Lousada superspecial ends the day’s running. The day starts with two 5.5-mile runs, through Felguieras and Montim, the latter returning to the schedule having not featured last year. Amarante, the longest stage of the rally at 23 miles, is next, followed by the 10-mile Paredes, which last year ran on Sunday.

With Paredes switching to Saturday, Sunday’s itinerary is tweaked so that both Cabeceiras de Basto and Fafe, with its ever-popular jumps, are run twice. They combine to make nearly 40 miles of ‘Super Sunday’ running (only 18% of the total mileage), with the second pass of Fafe doubling up as the powerstage.
