kagoshima tourist information

Kagoshima () is Kyushu 's southernmost major city and the capital of Kagoshima Prefecture . The city is often compared with its Italian sister city Naples due to a similarly mild climate, palm tree-lined streets, relatively hot tempered inhabitants and rumbling Mount Sakurajima , Kagoshima's Vesuvius.

The city has a rich history as the former seat of one of Japan's most powerful feudal clans, the Shimazu , who played a central role in the Meiji Restoration . Besides offering several attractions on its own, the city can also serve as a base for a variety of attractive day trips, such as to the Kirishima Mountains and the Satsuma Peninsula , and as the stepping stone to island destinations further south, including Yakushima and Amami Oshima .

Kagoshima City

Home of sakurajima and rich cuisine, about kagoshima city.

Kagoshima City is set against the backdrop of Sakurajima, an active volcano and the city's icon in Kagoshima Prefecture. The prefecture's capital city is likened to the Italian city of Naples due to its climate and presence of a volcano.

Sakurajima can be accessed by a 10-minute ferry ride from Kagoshima's port and visitors can get around the island by hiking trails, or by vehicles such as rental cars, sightseeing buses, or bicycles. The volcano has three peaks: Kita-dake, Naka-dake, and Minami-dake. There are several observation decks around the volcano where visitors may witness mini eruptions from Minami-dake's Showa Crater at a safe distance.

In the city center, there are shopping complexes scattered around and Tenmonkan, the largest shopping district in south Kyushu, is located downtown Kagoshima City.

Just a little north from downtown is the Senganen Garden, a Japanese landscape garden that features Sakurajima in its scenery. The garden features a wide variety of plants that bloom at different times of the year, allowing visitors a chance to be visually treated all year round.

Kagoshima also has much to offer in terms of food such as satsuma age (deep-fried fish cake) and the "Black trio" of Wagyu beef, Berkshire pork, and Satsuma jidori chicken - the name is derived from the black colors of the animals used to make the dishes. Wagyu beef from Kagoshima is said to be the top in Japan, which will definitely entice beef lovers to the region.

Near the end of the year, the Kagoshima Ohara Festival is held. The entire city descends into downtown Kagoshima for a lively performance over two days and it is a great opportunity to experience the city's atmosphere.

Kagoshima (鹿児島) is the capital of Kagoshima prefecture on the island of Kyushu , Japan .

Kagoshima is a historical city watched over by the looming bulk of Sakurajima (桜島), an active volcano that regularly dumps ash over the city and erupts a bit every now and then to remind people it's still there. It is a decade volcano , considered exceptionally dangerous because it has large eruptions and is near a city. The home of near-mythical samurai hero Saigo Takamori (see History ), it's full of sites related to the Satsuma Rebellion.

Tourist information site

The local Convention and Visitors Bureau has a multilingual guide site .

Map

Kagoshima is the southernmost city on Japan's extensive bullet train network. Services terminate at Kagoshima's main rail station, Kagoshima-Chuō (鹿児島中央).

Kyushu Shinkansen trains run several times per hour from Hakata Station in Fukuoka , taking as little as 80 minutes at a cost of ¥10,170. If you have a Japan Rail Pass you can use Kyushu Shinkansen services at no charge, except Mizuho trains.

Sakura and Mizuho trains connect Kagoshima with stations north and east on the San'yo Shinkansen network. Using the Sakura , Hiroshima is 2 hr 40 min away (¥17,200), Okayama 3 hr 20 min (¥19,830) and Osaka 4 hr 10 min (¥21,300).

From Tokyo , it is possible to travel the full distance of the Tokaido, San'yo and Kyushu shinkansen lines in 7 hours using a combination of Nozomi and Kyushu Shinkansen trains. The use of Nozomi and Mizuho trains requires a supplemental Nozomi Mizuho ticket to be used alongside the Japan Rail Pass within its validity period. However, Japan Rail Pass holders can make a day trip in 8 hours using a combination of Hikari and Sakura / Tsubame services free of charge.

Note that Kagoshima has two central stations, Kagoshima (鹿児島駅) and Kagoshima-Chuō (鹿児島中央駅). The former is the older station slightly to the north of the city centre, and you're unlikely to use it. The much larger Kagoshima-Chuō station is likely where you'll be travelling to and from. Don't confuse them!

Sleeper trains

Because all sleeper trains from Tokyo and Kansai to Kyushu have been discontinued, traveling overnight to Kagoshima strictly by train could be a little difficult. Thankfully, trips are easier to make now that the Kyushu Shinkansen is fully operational.

From Tokyo, it is still possible to take an overnight train, the 22:00 Sunrise Seto/Sunrise Izumo , to Okayama where you can connect to a bullet train the next morning to continue the journey. With a Japan Rail Pass, a connection to a Sakura at Okayama will get you to Kagoshima at around 10:45. Without a Rail Pass you can connect in Okayama to a Mizuho that gets to Kagoshima by 09:50.

Rail Pass holders can opt for carpeted spaces on the overnight train where you sleep on the floor - as these are classified as "reserved seats", they are free to reserve with the pass. Otherwise, accommodation charges of approximately ¥10,000-17,000 must be paid. Bullet trains west of Okayama are covered by the pass as long as you stick with the Sakura or Hikari services.

Overnight by train with rest stop

If you are unable to secure a space on the overnight train, another option - especially for those using a Japan Rail Pass - is to split up the journey, stopping at an intermediate destination en route in order to sleep somewhere. The cost incurred will only be for the hotel room; the Rail Pass covers your transportation.

This two-part method carries a couple of advantages. You will more than likely find good accommodation very close to a main train station in a smaller city, compared to a big city such as Tokyo, and it will more than likely be cheaper than hotels found in Tokyo. You could use the money you save to forward some of your luggage using a luggage delivery service and take an overnight bag with you, which will make the journey easier.

From Tokyo, you could depart in the late afternoon or early evening on the bullet train and sleep over at a hotel in Himeji or Okayama . In the morning, grab one of the first bullet train departures in the same direction to continue your trip. For example, if you were to overnight in Himeji, you can take a direct Hikari service (3 hr 45 min) and stay in a hotel close to Himeji station for around ¥3,000-5,000 per person. In the morning, the 06:55 Sakura departure will get you to Kagoshima by 10:45.

Various overnight bus services are available to Kagoshima from Osaka and Kobe (~¥10,000 one way; ~¥21,000 round-trip). Tickets for Osaka and Kyoto can be bought from Willer Express's English site for around ¥7800 each way. Daytime and nighttime buses also run from Fukuoka (¥5400 one way; 4 hours) and Oita . There are day buses from Kumamoto for about ¥3600; 3½ hours.

Kagoshima is one of Japan's most busy ferry terminals, with a plethora of ferries connecting mainland Japan to its southern islands. For the Okinawan archipelago there's several routes towards Naha which stops on different islands along the way. Operators include Marix Line and A Line ferry - expect the full journey towards Naha to take around 25 hours, although you can stop halfway through in the Amami Islands .

Towards the world heritage site of Yakushima and the island of Tanegashima near Kyushu you can take either Orita Kisen (4 hr, ¥5000), or the Toppy and Rocket hydrofoils completing the journey in less than 2 hours (¥7700) for Tanegashima and in 2-3 hours for Yakushima (¥9000). Finally for the Tokara Islands , the municipality [1] operates 2 weekly ferries plying the route in around 7 hours (¥6000).

kagoshima tourist information

Streetcars are a convenient way to get around Kagoshima city. Both lines 1 and 2 can be boarded at the Kagoshima station; only line 2 runs by Kagoshima-chuo. Board the tram from the back door, and pay the ¥170 (verified Oct 2018) per ride fee when exiting the front door. If you don't have exact change, the fare machine can make change, but it is polite to get your change during the ride, so as to not hold people up when at your final stop. You can pay with IC-cards but compatibility is quite bad - even JR Kyushu's SUGOCA card cannot be used. Unless you've picked up Kagoshima's local RapiCa card you likely will be forced to pay in cash. Streetcar signage varies by the age of the streetcar; some have electronic signs that indicate the stop, but many do not. Streetcar information and a route map are available from www.synapse.ne.jp.

The ferry between volcanic island of Sakurajima and Kagoshima harbor operates frequently and around the clock. The boat ride will take about fifteen minutes.

Given Kagoshima's relatively small size and straighforward layout, buses (¥150) are less confusing than in larger Japanese cities.

If you plan to make Kagoshima a base for multiple trips, or make Kagoshima a stop on a trip throughout Kyushu, then a 5-day Kyushu rail pass may be the best option. If you are travelling from Tokyo or farther via train, then a 7-day Japan Rail pass is about the same price as a one-way shinkansen ticket from Tokyo to Kagoshima. Both of these passes have extensive limitations; be sure to review terms and purchase your pass before entering Japan.

  • 31.59118 130.55473 1 Tenmonkan shopping arcade (天文館通り, Tenmonkan-dōri) has a plethora of shops, where you can satisfy your consuming needs.

Kagoshima is known throughout Japan for its sweet potato shochu , or imo-jochu (芋焼酎). While shochu is often compared to vodka, it first goes through a fermentation process. In Kagoshima, almost all restaurants have imo-jochu , and some have hundreds of different brands. Even the Shinkansen platforms at Kagoshima-chuo station have a bar/shop with more than 100 varieties of shochu.

In Kagoshima, the most common way to drink shochu is mixed with hot water, or oyu-wari . This releases the fragrance of the shochu, and also reduces the alcohol content to be on-par with wine. Because Kagoshima is the center of manufacture, many factories offer tours and have small shops for tasting and purchasing the locally made shochu.

If you're looking for inexpensive accommodation, the tourist information in the Kagoshima station can hand you a leaflet, where they have listed all the inexpensive options in Kagoshima. They can also check availability and book the accommodation for you.

How to Get There

Kagoshima City is Kagoshima's central transport hub with links to most other major cities in Kyushu.

Regular access to the islands and other local destinations make Kagoshima City a convenient base for exploring the region.

The Kyushu Shinkansen connects Kagoshima with Kumamoto (42 minutes), Fukuoka (1 hour 16 minutes) and Shin-Osaka (3 hours 41 minutes). Local trains and buses are also available from neighboring prefectures.

Domestic flights operate from most major locations, including Tokyo (2 hours), Osaka (1 hour 15 minutes) and Fukuoka (55 minutes). Regular international flights operate from Seoul, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Shanghai.

In the shadow of Sakurajima

Active volcano Sakurajima towers over the city and is only a short ferry ride away if you want to get up close and personal with this monument to the power of nature. You can cycle around the volcano, and there is a museum where you can learn all about the volcano.

Southern Japanese samurai

Visit the ruins of Kagoshima castle to step back in time and feel how the lords of the Shimazu clan and their samurai lived. Kagoshima samurai played a pivotal role in the end of the Tokugawa clan and indeed samurai rule of Japan in 1867.

Take a leisurely walk around the old castle grounds

Ishibashi park.

Take a stroll around Ishibashi Park, where the old stone bridges of Kagoshima City have been tastefully displayed. A small man-made river makes a great paddling pool for younger children in the warmer months.

Swim with dolphins during summer

During the summer you can also enjoy a swim at nearby Iso Beach, which is also frequented by windsurfers and jet-skiers. If you are lucky, you may even see dolphins playing in the sea in front of the volcano.

Journey through the historic Sengan-en

A view of the deep.

The view of the volcano is certainly impressive, but what goes on underneath the surface of the sea is equally so. You can take a look at the kind of creatures that might be lurking deep beneath the surface in Kinko Bay in the huge Aira Caldera at the Io World aquarium.

Living it large with the locals

Kagoshima is famous for its food and drink, and what better way to enjoy it than in the company of locals in one of downtown Tenmonkan's many great bars and restaurants. Hop on a tram and make your way through the city to the main nightspots, or take it easy in a restaurant nestled in one of the many inviting backstreets.

Devour famous dishes and special local shochu

Japan might be famous for sushi, but Kagoshima really brings home the bacon with its famous kurobuta pork, award-winning wagyu beef, and kurosatsuma-dori (black chicken). Head down to Tenmonkan to sample local shochu. Don't worry about missing the last train, the nightlife in Kagoshima goes on late into the night.

15 Best Things to Do in Kagoshima (Japan)

The vibrant city of Kagoshima is the capital of the wider Kagoshima Prefecture and is one of the nicest spots to start a visit to the island of Kyushu in Japan.

The city is best known for the spectacular Sakurajima volcano which looms next to it and this is also a great place to use a base if you want to explore the neighboring islands of Okinawa.

In the town itself you will be able to visit a number of engaging museums, as well as explore graceful parks, hike the adjacent volcano, and explore the hot springs in the nearby villages.

Here are the 15 best things to do in Kagoshima …

1. Tour Shiroyama Park

View from Shiroyama Park

Shiroyama Park is a pretty little park in Kagoshima which is famous for the Shiroyama Observatory.

Here you will find that you can see all over the city, and this is also one of the most significant historical spots in Kagoshima as this was the spot where the Satsuma Rebellion took place in 1887. There is a cave in the park called Saigo Cave which is linked to the local Kagoshima resident Saigo Takamori which fought in the rebellion and this is said to be the place where he fought to the death as part of the rebellion.

2. Take a ferry ride

Kagoshima ferry

If you want to check out Sakurajima Volcano in all its glory but don’t want the hike, then you can take a scenic ferry ride from Kagoshima Harbor over to the island that the volcano sits on.

There are ferries that operate daily between the two points and it only takes around 15 minutes to make the journey, but this is still one of the best ways to enjoy the amazing scenery for which Kyushu is so famous.

3. Walk around Sengan-en

Sengan-en

Also known as Iso-teien, Sengan-en is a gorgeous section of gardens in Kagoshima which are said to date from 1658. In the days of old the gardens would have been designed by a Shimazu lord, but they are still every bit as impressive now as they would have been back then.

To get around the gardens you can go for a walk which will take you around 30 minutes, or you can also sign up for a tour of the villa that stands on the garden grounds which would also have belonged to the Shimazu family.

You can even take tea at the former home and look out over the delightfully landscaped grounds at the same time.

4. Attend Sogadon-no-Kasayaki

Sogadon-no-Kasayaki

If you happen to be in Kagoshima in July then make sure that you don’t miss one of its premium attractions which is the Sogadon-no-Kasayaki festival.

This is also known as the Umbrella Burning Festival and it features male residents walking down to the Kotsuki-gawa River and setting fire to umbrellas.

This ritual is based on a legend which says that two brothers used umbrellas as flaming torches in the days of old which is also an engaging tale of rivalry and deceit.

5. Explore Shoko Shuseikan

Shoko Shuseikan

Shoko Shuseikan is a museum in Kagoshima which used to be the home of the first factory in Japan which would have stood in the 1850s.

The museum is known for its antiques that relate to the famous Shimazu family in Kagoshima and you will find some 10,000 different items in the collections here which include beautiful calligraphy pieces, ceramics and glassware.

6. Visit Tsurumaru Castle

Tsurumaru Castle

Tsurumaru Castle is known as the castle which would have been owned by the Shimazu family.

As with many castles in Japan however, Tsurumaru Castle would have been destroyed in the days of old and the only original sections that still stand are the moat and the outer wall.

Still, it is considered an important monument in the city so it is well worth a look when you are in town, and it is also the site of a small museum.

7. Trek to Sakurajima

Sakurajima Volcano

Sakurajima is an active volcano which overlooks the town of Kagoshima and you can get to the smoldering mountain by taking a ferry across from Kagoshima Harbor.

To hike to the main lookout here takes around two hours and there are also a few other smaller lookouts on the way up which let you get a look at both the mountain and back over to the harbor and city of Kagoshima.

Bear in mind however that this is still an active volcano however so you need to check its latest status before you attempt to climb.

8. Drink the local tipple

Shochu

Kagoshima is famous in Japan for its liquor which is similar to something like vodka and is known as shochu.

This tipple is made from sweet potatoes and you can get this drink, also sometimes known as imo-jochu, all over the city.

The way that this drink is usually consumed in Kagoshima is mixed with hot water, which may sound a little strange but is said to warm the liquor so that it releases is deeper flavors.

9. Travel by train

Yamasemi Kawasemi Train

If you are in Kyushu then one of the best things that you can do is take a train journey, as this part of Japan is said to be one of the most scenic in the country.

One of the most famous railway lines here is the Hisatsu Line and you can travel to neighboring spots like Yoshimatsu and Hitoyoshi.

This allows you to take in some of the beauty of this part of Japan without having to venture too far, and you can hop along the train line and back again as part of a day trip.

10. Kayak to Sakurajima

Kayaking

Sakurajima is the active volcano that looks out over Kagoshima and it lies on a volcanic island across from the main harbor.

With that in mind, you can take the ferry across to the island or, if you are looking for an adventure, you can sea kayak across to Sakurajima.

It takes around an hour to paddle out in the local area and you will need to have a reasonable level of fitness and mobility to attempt it, but getting out on the water is one of the best ways to experience the towering majesty of Sakurajima.

11. Explore Reimeikan

The Reimeikan

The Reimeikan is known for its historical background on the history of the Satsuma Rebellion in Kagoshima and this is also the place to come if you want to know more about ancient Japanese arts and crafts such as sword making.

The Reimeikan is located inside Kagoshima Castle and is like a small museum, even though most of the original castle no longer stands here.

Still, it is one of the most important historical sites in town and will tell you more about how people would have lived and worked in Kagoshima in the days of old.

12. Visit the Kagoshima City Museum of Art

Kagoshima City Museum of Art

If you want to know more about arts and crafts in Kagoshima then you need to come to the Kagoshima City Museum of Art.

Here you will find a number of galleries that are dedicated to a variety of local Kagoshima artists as well as some antiques and painting that date back to the 16th century, including fine porcelain and woodblock print pieces.

This is also one of the best places to find works of art dedicated to Sakurajima.

13. Try the local snacks

Chocolate Kakigori

If you visit Kagoshima during the summer months then you may want to try the local snacks and desserts which will help to keep you cool in the city.

One of the favorites of local residents is called kakigori which is a kind of dessert made from shaved ice which is then topped with a mix of sweet condensed milks, fruit, jelly and beans.

This may sound a little strange, but it is just the ticket when the city gets steamy in the summer months.

One of the most famous places that sell these desserts in Kagoshima is called Tenmonkan Mujyaki which is known for its polar bear statue located outside.

They also do a signature version of kakigori which is made to mirror the polar bear motif.

14. Cycle to Sakurajima

Rent A Bike

If you really want a work out when you visit Sakurajima then you may want to think about hiring a bike.

Many people don’t even realize that it is possible to cycle around the mountain, but there is actually a track here which stretches for some 39 kilometers.

It takes around four hours to cycle along the path but this is also one of the best ways to take in the sights around Sakurajima, including a viewpoint that looks into the crater.

15. Tour the Museum of the Meiji Restoration

Museum of the Meiji Restoration

If you want to know more about the history of Kagoshima then you need to head to the Museum of the Meiji Restoration.

Here you can learn all about how samurai would have lived in the days of old and even learn about how swords were made and handled.

One of the big highlights of this museum is that much of the signage is in English so that you can learn more about things such as the samurai education system and you can also learn about the Satsuma Rebellion which took place in the city.

A 1-day kagoshima itinerary: from samurai to volcanoes.

Whilst Kagoshima is unlikely to feature on a first-time Japan itinerary – the delights of Tokyo, Kyoto and the like cannot be ignored – this doesn’t make the city any less compelling.

It has a rich and proud Samurai cultural legacy, a sensational Japanese garden, a smouldering volcano, first-class cuisine and  onsens on its doorstep. Its lack of tourists only adds to its appeal.

I did a Kagoshima day trip from Fukuoka and am excited to share the best things to do in the southernmost city on Kyushu Island.

Make the most of your time there with my tried and tested 1-day Kagoshima itinerary. This article also includes how to get to Kagoshima, how to get around, what to eat and solo travel tips.

  • EVENING : Shochu tasting

BEST WAY TO GET AROUND: Kagoshima City Bus or tram. Ferry to Sakurajima.

BEST MONTHS TO VISIT KAGOSHIMA: Kagoshima can be visited most months of the year. Avoid the summer months as these are hotter and wetter and coincide with the peak of Japan’s typhoon season (August and September).

IN THIS ARTICLE

Introducing Kagoshima

The so-called “Naples of the Orient” has been voted Japan’s friendliest city and is responsible for the birth of the Industrial Revolution in Japan. It is also home to Kyushu’s oldest and largest shopping mall and is the centre of Japanese sweet potato ( shochu ) cultivation.

In less amiable times, Kagoshima was the setting for the final battle of the Satsuma rebellion, Japan’s last civil war. Information boards at key locations across central Kagoshima will be your historical guide.

bronze sculpture of japanese man looking at information board

But Kagoshima is better known for  Sakurajima , one of the most active volcanoes in Japan, and  Sengan-en , the sprawling traditional gardens and house of the Shimadzu clan.

Is One Day in Kagoshima Enough?

I spent a day in Kagoshima on a day trip from Fukuoka. This was enough time to visit Sengan-en and Sakurajima without feeling rushed.    If you spend two days in Kagoshima (or more), you will be able to take in the city’s main attractions in a more leisurely manner, as well as travel a little further afield. I have included a few suggestions for extending your Kagoshima itinerary towards the end of this article.

My Suggested 1-Day Kagoshima Itinerary

Discover the best things to do in Kagoshima in one day with my tried and tested itinerary. Before setting off, stop at the tourist information office at Kagoshima-Chuo station for helpful information, a free map and to buy your City Bus pass.

DIVE INTO KAGOSHIMA’S SAMURAI PAST AT SENGAN-EN

The first stop on your Kagoshima itinerary is  Sengan-en .  You can get here by taking the City View Bus or Machi Meguri Bus from Kagoshima Chuo Station to Sengan-en Mae bus stop.

Sengan-en is home to a traditional Japanese-style landscape garden and is the former residence of the Shimadzu family, who ruled Kagoshima until the 19th century. It was built in 1658 and draws heavily on the principle of borrowed scenery, incorporating background elements of a smoking Sakurajima and Kinko Bay as part of the gardens.

japanese garden with volcanic peak in background

It is also a  UNESCO World Heritage Site but not for the reason you might think.

Sengan-en is also the site of Japan’s oldest remaining stone factory . This was built in 1865 and was at the forefront of the Japanese Industrial Revolution.

During the Edo period, the Shimadzu clan owned several residences. Thirteen shrines from these residences were moved to Sengan-en and collected into a single shrine – the Oniwa Shrine – in 1918.

I was also taken with the Cat Shrine , built to mark the enshrinement of the two cats who survived an expedition to Korea taken by Yoshihiro, the 17 th head of the Shimadzu family. The story goes that he could accurately tell the time of day during battle by looking at the eyes of his seven cats.

MY TIPS FOR VISITING SENGAN-EN

  • As Senga-en covers 12 acres, it is ambitious to try to cover it all in one day. My advice is to pick up a leaflet at the entrance and follow the red route on the map. Signs around the site will also guide you.
  • For sweeping views and a serene ambience, stop for a cup of  sencha  and a traditional Japanese sweet at the Senga-en Matcha Café.

TAKE THE FERRY TO SAKURAJIMA

Ferries to Sakurajima Port leave Kagoshima every 15 – 20 minutes. The journey time is 15 minutes.

smoking volcano beind bay and boats

Located in the middle of Kagoshima Bay, Sakurajima has three peaks. The highest of these is at an elevation of 1117 meters and has a circumference of about 50 kilometres.

This volcano has spewed ash and smoke constantly since 1955 and minor eruptions take place more than 1,000 times a year. Before a powerful eruption in 1914, Sakurajima used to be an island in the bay but the lava flow from that event created a land connection to the Osumi Peninsula.

MY TIPS FOR VISITING SAKURAJIMA

Sakurajima is best explored by car, but that may not be practical if you are only in Kagoshima for one day and are a solo traveller.

The easiest way to tour Sakurajima is to use the circular Sakurajima Island View sightseeing bus. The bus departs from Sakurajima Port every 30 minutes and takes 55 minutes to complete the loop. The last bus leaves the port at 4.30 pm.

brightly coloured tourist bus in kagoshima japan

There are 12 stops but the bus only stops at all of these once an hour. Check the  Sakurajima Island View timetable for further information.

If you are short on time, I recommend making one stop at the Yunohira Observatory , the closest stop to the volcano. The bus makes a ten-minute photo stop here.

EXPLORE KAGOSHIMA’S DOWNTOWN AREA

Jump on the tram or City View Bus from Kagoshima Port to visit the city’s downtown area.

Tenmonkan is awash with restaurants, some specialising in Kagoshima cuisine, plus shops and boutiques.

One of the city’s best-known shrines,  Terukuni Shrine , is a 10-minute walk. Next to the Terukuni Shrine is the  Kagoshima Prefectural Museum , the city’s natural history museum.

St. Xavier’s Catholic Cathedral is also close by.

japanese shopping mall

DRINK THE LOCAL TIPPLE

I recommend you end your day in Kagoshima with a glass of the local fire water: shochu. Distilled from many kinds of ingredients including Japanese sweet potatoes, barley, rice, and buckwheat, it is best enjoyed straight (my preference) or with a water chaser.

Getting There

Kagoshima can be reached by air, rail or road. If you are spending just one day in Kagoshima, travelling by train is your likely option.

japanese-bullet-train passing platform

The Sakura shinkansen (bullet train) travels to Kagoshima-Chuo station from Fukuoka (Hakata station) in around 90 minutes. From Kumamoto, the journey time is around 45 minutes.

The slightly faster Mizuho shinkansen also runs along this line. However, Mizuho bullet trains are not included in the Japan Rail Pass .

Regular JR trains also serve this route. However, as this is a very long journey involving multiple changes of train, I don’t recommend this as an option if you are visiting Kagoshima on a day trip.

Kagoshima has an airport, a 40-60 minute bus ride north of the city centre, which handles domestic flights and selected international flights, including those from Seoul, Shanghai, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

The  airport bus from Kagoshima Airport  serves locations in the city centre, including Kagoshima Chuo Station.

Bus routes to Kyushu are limited and journey times are considerable. For example, the bus journey between Kagoshima and Fukuoka takes four hours (six hours for the overnight journey).

From most destinations, you are better off taking the train if you are visiting Kagoshima for the day.

Getting Around Kagoshima

Your best options for getting around Kagoshima are trams and tourist loop buses. You will need to catch a ferry to reach Sakurajima.

Kagoshima’s trams

Kagoshima’s two tram lines provide a quick and convenient service from its train station to the downtown area.

Kagoshima’s loop buses

The City View Bus and the Machimeguri Bus operate similar routes, connecting Kagoshima Chuo Station with Senganen Garden and the ferry terminal serving Sakurajima.

Kagoshima City View Bus

people boarding brightly coloured retro bus

I used the Kagoshima City View buses. A one-day pass is available, offering unlimited use of the City View Bus, regular bus and city trams on one calendar day.

This retro-style bus is an excellent way to navigate Kagoshima and costs only marginally more per ride than the less useful city buses. Enter by the central door and pay the driver as you exit or flash your one-day pass (make sure that you have scratched off the date of travel).

The  City View Bus service leaves Kagoshima Chuo Station every 30 minutes and the entire loop takes 80 minutes.

bus stop in japan

Many of its 19 stops are associated with Kagoshima’s often bloody history. Recorded commentaries in English are available but some drivers provide their own commentary, which is far more entertaining!

Machi Meguri Bus

The Machi Meguri Bus is a more frequent and affordable option. However, this one-day pass does not include city trams or regular buses.

The Cute Pass

If I was visiting Kagoshima again, I would opt for the Cute Pass . This is valid on trams, regular buses, the City View Bus, the Sakurajima Ferry the Sakurajima Island View Bus.

If You Have More Than One Day in Kagoshima

But what are the other things to do in Kagoshima if you have two or three days there? I recommend taking more time to explore Sakurajima, perhaps going on a hike, and adding a few more tourist attractions to your Kagoshima itinerary.

Here are some suggestions.

Sample Satsuma cuisine

Local culinary specialities are one of the things for which Japan is known . Make your mind up about whether the Kagoshima ramen is tastier than that in Fukuoka.

Furusato Food Village , a collection of food stalls located in an alley a stone’s throw from Kagoshima-Chuo Station is the place to go.

Here are a few of the local specialities to try:

Kuroushi Beef  – this tender pan-fried black beef was the Kagoshima speciality I was able to try before heading back to Fukuoka

Satsumaage  – these deep-fried fish cakes are one of the most famous dishes of Kagoshima.

Kibinago  – small herring fish served raw as sashimi with vinegar soybean paste

Torisashi  – chicken sashimi served with ground ginger and soy dipping sauce

Tonkotsu – slow-cooked pork and miso broth that is served with vegetables. A generous measure of shochu gives Kagoshima’s Tonkotsu a slightly sweet flavour.

Take in the view from Shiroyama Observatory

One of the best views of Kagoshima against the backdrop of a smoking Sakurajima is from  Shiroyama Observatory at the top of  Mount Shiroyama . A walking trail winds its way to the mountain and around  Shiroyama Park , which marks the spot where the final battle of the Satsuma Rebellion took place in 1887.

Shiroyama Observatory is served by the City View Bus (Terunki Shrine stop).

Check out the Artwork at the Kagoshima City Museum of Art

The small  Kagoshima City Museum of Art  is home to a collection of Western-style works by artists from Kagoshima Prefecture. There is also a small collection of paintings by Western artists, including Monet, Renoir, and Picasso, Warhol, as well as Satsuma pottery and cut glass.

Take the City View Bus to Statue of Saigo Takamori stop.

Immerse yourself in local history and culture at the Kagoshima City Museum of Meiji Restoration

Kagoshima City Museum of Meiji Restoration  is a small museum dedicated to the city’s role in the Meiji Restoration, with a focus on local heroes such as Saigo Takamori (1828-1877) and Okubo Toshimichi (1830-1878).

Although most of the information is in Japanese, there is some English content and there is good use of dioramas and video displays.

The museum is across the river from Kagoshima-Chuo station.

Bury yourself in the sand in Ibusuki on the Satsuma Peninsula

One of the easiest day trips from Kagoshima is  Ibusuki , an onsen (hot spring) town on the Satsuma Peninsula.

Bury yourself in the town’s naturally heated sand at the Saraku Sand Bath Hall, a large hot spring facility located about a kilometre from Ibusuki Station. For an entrance fee of 1,100 yen, you can enjoy the sand bath for 10 to 20 minutes, wash off the sand and then use the hot spring baths.

To reach Ibusuki, take the local  JR Ibusuki Makurazaki Line  from Kagoshima Chuo Station to Ibusuki Station. The journey, which is covered by the JR Pass, takes around 70 minutes.

There are quicker limited express trains (50 minutes) between Kagoshima and Ibusuki but these are far less frequent.

Hike amongst the cedar trees of Yakushima Island

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Yakushima Island ,  a subtropical island off the coast of Kyushu, is home to some of the oldest trees on the planet.

Jomon-sugi , Japan’s oldest giant cedar tree, is thought to be between 3,000 to 7,000 years old. Most people visit the island to hike through the forest and see the ancient cedar trees, known as yakusugi (a combination of Yakushima and sugi, the Japanese word for cedar).

The extremely wet climate is responsible for Yakushima’s crystal-clear rivers, spectacular waterfalls and lush foliage. This also means that you should not leave your waterproof in your hotel.

Sea turtles lay their eggs between May and July at Nagata Inaka-hama on the island’s northwest coast. Some of Yakushima’s   best onsen are right on the beach.

This is an ambitious day trip from Kagoshima. It is best visited on an overnight stay.

To get there, take the high-speed jetfoil boat from Kagoshima Port to the tiny ports of Miyanoura and Anbo. The journey time is between two and three hours

Although there is a local bus service, it is limited and cannot reach the narrow road of the western part of the island. A rental car is your best bet for getting around Yakushima.

Where to Stay in Kagoshima

Although you can see Kagoshima’s main attractions in one day, staying overnight will allow you to visit the places further out of town and give you more opportunities to sample its culinary specialities.

There are some affordable and centrally-located accommodation choices for solo travellers to Kagoshima.

This bright and airy apartment has great reviews and benefits from a washing machine and tumble dryer.

Is Kagoshima Safe for Solo Travellers?

Safety as a solo traveller is a particular concern for women travelling alone.

Japan is one of the safest  solo travel destinations in Asia , if not the world. This is a country that takes pride in its safety, uniformity and order and has a very low crime rate .

If you are a female solo traveller, Japan is one of the best countries in the world to travel alone.

Whilst you shouldn’t be complacent, you don’t have to be concerned about pickpocketing or walking alone at night as much as you would in other countries. If you use your common sense, watch your belongings, drink alcohol in moderation and share your itinerary with someone back home, your trip to Kagoshima should be trouble-free.

Thank you for reading my Kagoshima day trip itinerary

I hope that you have a wonderful day. If you are spending more time on Kyushu island, take a look at my suggestions for the best things to do in Fukuoka .

Kagoshima is a city located south of Kyushu , one of the four main islands that make up the Japanese archipelago. With its strategic location in the Kagoshima bay, the city of Kagoshima has played a significant role in the history of Japan. In addition to its rich culture, it has beautiful landscapes to explore, many of them are in the gorgeous island of Sakurajima , located right in front the city.

Before we get into the city’s best attractions, here are some tips on how to travel to Kagoshima and where to stay.

How To Get To Kagoshima?

Fly to Kagoshima

As you can see, Kagoshima is quite far from the most frequently visited cities of Japan such as Tokyo , Osaka or  Kyoto for example. One of the fastest ways to get to Kagoshima is therefore to take a short domestic flight. You can do your research on Skyscanner for example and you will see that it is not very expensive. Actually, you can buy a round-trip plane ticket from Tokyo to Kagoshima for about $115. For your information, the flight lasts about 2 hours.

Take a train to Kagoshima

Shinkansen-Nozomi-Tokyo-Japon-Train-JR-Pass

The train can also be an interesting option but only if you have a JR Pass . Train travel is quite expensive in Japan but this is no longer valid if you have a JR Pass . The pass also covers the ultra-fast Shinkansen lines so it will only take 4 hours to get from Osaka to Kagoshima by train. Check out the Hyperdia website to find the best route for you.

Kagoshima Japon Kyushu - Ferry Naha

I didn’t take the plane or the train to Kagoshima but rather went for a ferry trip from Naha City in  Okinawa . To cover the 700 kilometers that separate the two cities, I boarded the big boat you see above for a 26-hour trip. You read right, a 26-hour trip! It was a long trip I admit but I wanted to do a Tokyo – Okinawa – Kyushu -Kansai – Tokyo loop and I absolutely loved it!

Of course, you can sleep on the boat and there are rooms where sleeping mats and (rectangular) pillows are provided.

It was certainly not the most comfortable trip but I really didn’t regret it because it was very fun and I met nice people there.

Where To Stay In Kagoshima?

Kagoshima Japan - Green Guesthouse

During my trip to Kagoshima, I spent 3 nights in the Green Guesthouse and it was totally satisfying. It is conveniently located between Kagoshima Station and the port where you can embark to go to Sakurajima . The staff was also very welcoming and helped me organize my stay in Kagoshima. I also had great memories of parties we had at the roof top. You will also be able to see the volcano from there. 🙂

If you want to enjoy a good onsen after a busy day of touristy activities, you can book at the Nakahara Bessou ryokan to relax in its lovely hot spa.

Onsen Ryokan Kagoshima Nakahara Bessou

The Nakahara Bessou ryokan also has the advantage of having western-style rooms, but I strongly recommend Japanese rooms with tatami mats and futon bedspreads. It is a typical Japanese experience to do at least once during your trip. And even if it doesn’t look very comfortable, I personally find it very relaxing and pleasant to sleep on a tatami mat.

The 7 Best Things To Do In Kagoshima

It’s time for adventure! Let’s go through the list of the 7 attractions I liked best in Kagoshima.

  • Sakurajima volcano
  • The Meiji Restoration Museum
  • Samurai houses
  • The statue of Saigo Takamori, the last Samurai
  • Shiroyama Park
  • Terukimi Shrine
  • Sengan-en Garden

To make it all easier for you, those 7 places are marked on the city map of Kagoshima as follows:

Kagoshima Kyushu Japan Map

1. Sakurajima Volcano

1. Kagoshima Japan - Sakurajima Volcano

Sakurajima is undoubtedly the most interesting place to visit in the Kagoshima area. Onsen for foot baths ( ashiyu ), magnificent views of the volcano, great sanctuaries and magnificent trekking trails, that’s all that Sakurajima has in store for you. I talk about it in details in the following blog post, so don’t hesitate to check it out: Sakurajima .

2. The Meiji Restoration Museum

2. Kagoshima Japan - The Meiji Restoration Museum

  • Exact location : https://goo.gl/maps/J34VfNAaCT12
  • Opening hours : every day from 9AM to 5PM
  • Entrance fee : 300 yen (about $2.7)

The Meiji Restoration Museum in Kagoshima is a must-visit attraction if you want to understand the city’s culture and its role in Japanese history. The Meiji period (1868-1912) followed the famous Edo period, after which the present city of Tokyo was named. The country was then under the hegemony of the Tokugawa Shogunate who enacted the sakoku policy, under which foreigners and Japanese people were barred from entering or leaving the country for a couple hundred years. For more information on the Edo period, make sure to visit the Edo Museum in Tokyo.

This isolation period ended somewhat forcibly following Commodore Perry’s visit to Tokyo Bay on heavily armed American ships. In view of the technological backwardness that Japan had accumulated during the Edo period, the Tokugawa Shogunate gave in to the Americans’ request and opened the country to foreign powers.

The Tokugawa even ended up transferring power to the Emperor of Japan, whose authority was only symbolic during the Edo period. It was Prince Mutsuhito who inherited power and in 1868, proclaimed the restoration of Imperial rule and the transfer of the capital from Kyoto to Tokyo (literally “eastern capital”).

This was followed by a series of reforms that transformed Japan into an industrial nation, quickly catching up to the European and American powers. At the military level, the Samurai no longer served much purpose after the end of the Shogunate; they became businessmen or enrolled in the imperial army. These sudden changes did not please everyone and a rebellion broke out, led by Kagoshima’s most influential figure, Saigo Takamori.

We’ll talk more about Saigo when we visit his bronze statue. As for the museum itself, you will get there by crossing the Kōtsuki river through this beautiful wooden bridge.

2. Kagoshima Japan - The Meiji Restoration Museum

Inside the museum are many traditional Japanese artifacts and a small amphitheater where you can watch robots reenacting major events from the Meiji Restoration period.

Here is a little glimpse of what’s inside the Meiji Restoration Museum:

3. The Samurai Houses of Kagoshima

3. Kagoshima Japan - Samurai Houses

Exact location :  https://goo.gl/maps/j8HiLMLFpNR2

The Satsuma clan of Kagoshima glorifies the status of samurai and so there are references to the lifestyle of these traditional Japanese warriors throughout the city. There is even a reconstruction of the houses of samurai just in front of the Meiji Restoration Museum, which you can visit for free.

This minimalist style called Futatsuya was adopted by low-level samurai who, at the end of the Edo period, had to live very modest lives. These reconstructed houses can therefore be considered a protest against the end of the samurai era.

4. The Statue of Saigo Takamori, The Last Samurai

4. Kagoshima Japan - The Statue of Saigo Takamori, The Last Samurai

Exact location :  https://goo.gl/maps/v73KnLnUYKL2

Saigo Takamori is the star of Kagoshima and you will find references to his character all over the city. He is even on the city walls, posing with a girl on each side.

4. Kagoshima Japan - The Statue of Saigo Takamori, The Last Samurai

Who is Saigo Takamori, you say? First of all, it is one of the most influential samurai in the history of Japan and most Japanese people know his story. During the Edo period, Saigo was opposed to the reign of the Shogunate and supported the idea of an Emperor with more power and more openness to Western powers. He led the imperial forces during the Boshin War (1868-1869), which was a bit like a revolution meant to overthrow the Shogunate. He finally won and thus actively participated in the Meiji Restoration I mentioned earlier.

Following Meiji reforms, the power of samurai gradually started to dwindle and they were replaced by social and administrative authorities. This turn of events led Saigo Takamori to return to Kagoshima to form a private samurai school and Kagoshima became an independent region that rejected imperial authorities. In response to these provocations, the imperial forces sent more than 70,000 men to suppress the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877.

La rébellion de Satsuma Saigo Takamori Kagoshima Japon

During the bloody war that ensued, Saigo got seriously wounded and decided to end his life, following the harakiri samurai ritual. It was his spectacular death that elevated him to the rank of hero of the nation. He is also considered to be the last true samurai of Japan. The last battle of the Satsuma Rebellion at Mount Shiroyama in September 1877 is what inspired the movie The Last Samurai .

Bataille de Shiroyama Saigo Takamori Satsuma

5. Shiroyama Park

5. Kagoshima Japan - Shiroyama Park

Exact location  :  https://goo.gl/maps/XaaYuLTbDxE2

Shiroyama is obviously an important landmark in the history of Japan. There is a beautiful park there today with other statues of important figures of the Satsuma clan such as Himazu Hisamitsu (picture below). Even if you are not a fan of Japanese history, it is a very pretty place to visit.

5. Kagoshima Japan - Shiroyama Park

6. Terukimi Shrine

6. Kagoshima Japan - Terukimi Shrine

Exact location :  https://goo.gl/maps/3y6HVRn4mWn

You can visit the amazing Terukimi sanctuary, located not too far from Shiroyama Park, and its impressive stone torii . If you visit it later in the afternoon, you will see its lanterns light up.

Be careful though, because terrible demons sometimes lurk around the sanctuary!

6. Kagoshima Japan - Terukimi Shrine

7. Sengan-en Garden

7. Kagoshima Japan - Sengan-en Garden

  • Exact location : https://goo.gl/maps/KAifC6rwLRw
  • Opening hours : every day from 8:30AM to 5:30PM
  • Entrance fee : 1000 yen (around $9)

Last but not least is the magical Sengan-en garden. If you’ve never seen a Japanese Zen garden before, you’ll not only enjoy its various flowers and plants, but you’ll also have a magnificent view of the volcano on the Sakurajima island. The Sengan-en garden is located outside the city, towards the northeast, and it’s about a 30 to 40 minute walk from there.

To go there, you can also take the following bus lines from Kagoshima Station:

  • Nangoku Kotsu Bus to Kamo or Kusuda
  • Iwasaki Bus to Aira New Town, Shigetomi, Hinatayama / Shigehisa or Kokubu / Shigehisa

The trip lasts about 10 minutes and you will have to get off at Sengan-en Mae Station. Our visit to the city of Kagoshima is over! I hope you enjoyed it and that you will one day visit this part of Japan. If you have questions or comments, let me know in the comment section below.

After Kagoshima, I hitchhiked to Kumamoto to help rebuild the region after the 2016 earthquake. I didn’t know it then, but I ended up volunteering in Minami Aso.

Don’t forget that you can follow all my adventures in Asia on social media, on my Facebook Page ,  Facebook Group , Instagram  and  Pinterest .

See you around,

PS : If you are looking for Nature and Adventure when you are in Kagoshima, you can take a boat and explore the beautiful Yakushima Island and its old trees. For your information, the forest in Yakushima inspired the famous anime Princess Mononoke and the landscapes over there are absolutely amazing! 🙂

Best things to do in Kagoshima Japan

1. hiking and sightseeing at sakurajima.

Sakurajima is the symbol of Kagoshima . It used to be an island in Kagoshima Bay but the volcano erupted in 1914 and connected the active volcano to the Osumi Peninsula.

With an elevation of 1117 meters and a circumference of 50 kilometres, the “island” has many things to do including hiking on various hiking trails, dipping in onsens (hot springs) and foot baths.

After a short ferry ride from Kagoshima Port, follow the signs and look for Nagisa Lava Trail , an easy 3km walking trail from the ferry terminal. And dip your feet in Nagisa Park Foot Bath and enjoy the soothing warm water.

Also, get a one day pass for ¥500 and hop on the Sakurajima Island View Bus . The bus loops around the volcano and stops at attractions like Karasujima Observatory , Akamizu Observatory and Yunohira Observatory .

How to get to Sakurajima: Take the ferry from Kagoshima Port to Sakurajima Ferry Terminal. It takes 15 minutes (every 15 minutes) and costs ¥200.

2. Visit the zen Sengan-en Garden

Sengan-en Garden is a large traditional Japanese-style landscape garden along the coast just north of Kagoshima. Similar to most places in Kagoshima, you can see Sakurajima as the backdrop.

The garden was constructed in 1658 as the second residence to the Shimazu family, who ruled Satsuma (Kagoshima’s name until the 19th century).

For ¥1,500, you can see the expansive garden, the residence villa, a variety of plants and trees including cherry trees, leisure hiking trails, eat at one of the two restaurants and visit a Shoko Shuseikan Museum .

How to get to Sengan-en Garden: Take the bus from Kagoshima Chuo Station to Sengan-en Mae bus stop. The Kagoshima City View Bus takes 50 minutes and costs ¥190. The Machi Meguri Bus takes 35 minutes and costs ¥170.

3. See whats left of Tsurumaru Castle Ruins

Tsurumaru Castle , or also known as Kagoshima Castle , was built in 1604 and stood for 260 years until a fire burned down most of the castle.

Today, only the ruins are left including a moat, stone walls and stone bridge. And you can see the bullet holes in the stonewalls from the Satsuma Rebellion, the final civil war in Japan.

Even though there isn’t a whole lot to see, I think it is still worth seeing the ruins and what is left from the fire.

While you are on the castle ground, look for Reimeikan Museum . It is a small history museum that displays arts and crafts highlighting local history and culture.

4. See a panoramic view of Kagoshima from Shiroyama Observatory

On a clear day, hike up Mt Shiroyama and look for Shiroyama Park at the top. It is a historical spot where the final battle of the Satsuma Rebellion took place in 1887. There is a walking trail leading up the mountain and around the park.

And take in the best scenic view of downtown Kagoshima, Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima from Shiroyama Observatory . The view is particularly beautiful during the day as you can see the whole city from above. And the view is quite spectacular at night as well.

Bring a snack or drink and enjoy the scenery from the park. It is a really nice spot for a break.

And the museum features local artists from Kagoshima where traditional Satsuma pottery, woodblock prints and other artwork depicting Sakurajima.

6. Visit Kagoshima City Museum of Meiji Restoration

Kagoshima City Museum of Meiji Restoration is a small museum displaying local history and culture. Even though the museums have extensive information on the history of Kagoshima, most of the displays are in Japanese.

But you can enjoy the limited English content and also the walking trails with cherry trees and a reconstructed samurai house.

7. Shop at the local street market at Tenmonkan

In Kagoshima, Tenmonkan is a shopping district that spans several blocks of the city. And it has an old-style covered shopping street or local street market called shotengai , where you can find many boutique shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs.

The covered arcade is the best spot to shop for souvenirs and try some of Kagoshima’s unique cuisine.

During the fish market tour, you will see all the variety of fish found in the waters around Kagoshima.

Besides hiking through the cedar forest, the island has other activities such as snorkelling, and scuba diving. And you can search for waterfalls, and enjoy some downtime at an onsen . You can see all these attractions over several days by car.

How to travel from Kagoshima to Yakushima Island: Take the High-speed jetfoil boat from Kagoshima Port to Miyanoura Port of Yakushima Island. It takes 2-3 hours and costs ¥9,200 (single trip), ¥16,600 (round trip within 7 days). Check Direct Ferries for schedules and fares

Awesome blog post Queenie Mak! Thank you for all the great info. I am going to Kagoshima next month (Dec 2020) and then taking a ferry to Okinawa. Your post saved me a lot of running around the Internet for good info. I have this post bookmarked on my phone, ipad and laptop and reference it all the time.

Hi Kyle, thanks so much for your comment! Totally jealous that you will be in Kagoshima next month. I was there during autumn and loved it. Hope you enjoy Okinawa as well. And stay safe too! 🙂

Hi Queenie, Really love your blog. Help me so much for my upcoming Japan trip. Can you share how you booked for Kagoshimashi Chuooroshiuriichibagyorui Market Tour?

Hi TK, Thanks so much for reading my blog. I didn’t get to see the market tour but I did have sashimi for breakfast. I found a link where you have to fill a PDF or Word document, and email it to the address listed in the post. I put the link in my post under “reservation is required” in the section for fish market tour (so that others can use that link in the future too). You can see all the info on that website – just have to translate the page from Japanese to English. Hope this is helpful! Have a wonderful time in Kagoshima!

Kagoshima in Japan: 11 reasons to visit and things to do in Kagoshima

Pip from Pip in the City recently visited Kagoshima in Japan for The Travel Hack and today she’s sharing the best things to do in Kagoshima and why she thinks you should visit! This trip was supported by Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

kagoshima tourist information

Imagine a city where the centrepiece is a gigantic, active volcano, spewing out ash clouds on a nearly daily basis? Welcome to Kagoshima, a lesser-known seaside city on Japan’s Kyushu Island.

The city plays second fiddle to Sakurajima, a volcano that is beloved by locals who have learnt to co-exist with the frequent eruptions.

Look out for raised umbrellas when ‘Sakurajima’ spews out dense clods volcanic ash that turns the sky grey and moody.

kagoshima tourist information

The area of Kagoshima itself is an otherworldly blend of the traditional and tropical, plentiful sunshine coats the city and surrounding woodlands with a bright golden hue. It’s a dreamy part of Japan to explore, especially if you are a fan of off-beat places.

If you are a keen photographer Sakurajima erupts on a very regular basis, which makes for some amazing travel photos.

The funniest part about visiting Kagoshima is that locals just carry on as normal when the volcano erupts, as if it is a total non-event? You can spot the tourists here, they’ll be the one with phones in the air getting those #eruption photos for the ‘gram.

kagoshima tourist information

There is a range of weird and wonderful things to do in Kagoshima that should definitely be added to your travel bucket list.

Here are 11 reasons why you need to visit Kagoshima, a wonderfully off-the-radar area of Japan.

1. Try a hot steam sand bath

Having a ‘hot steam bath’ [Sunamushi Onsen] is something of a unique experience in Japan. You first have to remove all your clothes in the changing rooms and then wear brightly coloured robes and a towel hat to have your sand bath. If you are of the British persuasion, a naked bath in the sand is frankly horrifying. Doesn’t sand get everywhere? You really have to put your sensibilities aside for this.

Once you are in your robe you will be taken down by the beach and buried under layers of sand. This is unlike any other spa experience you might have tried.

kagoshima tourist information

“You have a sand bath for health,” beams the tour guide. I would recommend you try to silence the growing anxiety that you are literally being buried alive by reminding yourself repeatedly that it’s for your wellbeing.

A small umbrella is also placed next to you adding to the strangeness of the situation. It is definitely an activity you must try in Japan if only for the bizarre photos you will get.

2. Learn about volcanoes at Sakurajima Geopark

The area around Sakurajima is known as the Sakurajima Geopark. You can learn more about life under an active volcano at the Sakurajima Visitor Centre.

The small centre contains video, dioramas and information as to how a city grew to love and respect a giant volcano. The genuine admiration the locals have for Sakurajima is really touching. “When I was in London, I was so sad that I couldn’t see Sakurajima every day” explained our tour guide. Bring tissues on your trip, you’ll hear many stories like this.

kagoshima tourist information

There are also several walking trails in the area including a 3-km long seaside lava trail called the Nagisa Yogan Trail.

The trails are beautifully laid out and feature superb views of the volcano and the surrounding woodlands and hills. It’s a total photographer’s dream there. Of course, one must simply get a ‘Selfie with volcano’, how are your friends at home ever going to top that?

3. Admire outdoor art at the Kirishima Open-Air Museum

The Kirishima Open-Air Museum is a place to experience art in a natural setting.

There are around 30 sculptures of varying sizes and impressive art pieces scattered around the site. You can take a self-guided walk around the manicured lawns and forest trails and discover the art for yourself. It’s a tad David Lynch at times, but in a thoroughly pleasant way.

kagoshima tourist information

The pieces actually have an intriguing way of blending into the grounds and becoming part of the landscape. Especially the ‘Forest Observatory’ piece.

It’s a lovely way of seeing a range of sculptures and installations that are bursting with creativity. The forest walk is an especially serene experience with many intriguing installations and sculptures to be discovered and snapped.

4. Go biking around the Chiringashima area

Chiringashima is a pretty and uninhabited island located in Kinko Bay. It is also known locally as “the island of mystery” due to its remote nature. It is connected to the mainland by the sand bar when the sea is at low tide.

The sandbar roughly appears for one to four hours a day and allows you to walk across to the island in about 20 minutes.

kagoshima tourist information

You can also rent a bike from right outside the train station and bike around the area and enjoy the lovely views of this incredibly quiet area. It’s quite a contrast after spending a few days in Tokyo. The roads are quiet and cars make allowances for bikes, making it a safe and enjoyable biking experience. London take note.

5. Enjoy a free foot spa

kagoshima tourist information

Kagoshima has 2,730 hot spring sources and has the second largest number of hot springs in all of Japan.

After a long day exploring the sights, be sure to soak your tired feet in a free foot spa, that has a rather lovely view of Sakurajima. It is rather splendid to soak your feet in a natural hot spring foot bath with a volcano view.

This free foot spa is located opposite the Sakurajima visitor centre and is also next to the gorgeous Yogan Nagisa Lava Trail. It really is the best way to unwind in Kagoshima.

6. Have sushi with a volcano view

kagoshima tourist information

Lunch at Ohkan restaurant is definitely an experience. This restaurant is located in the heart of Kagoshima’s fishing area. You can actually see boatloads of fish being hauled in by local fishermen.

Join the snaking line in this busy restaurant, choose your menu option, [have fun trying to decipher the Japanese and accompanying photos] and then take your seat with steaming cups of green tea.

The menu is packed full of fresh fish and specialities that will give you a real taste of Japan.

The views of the bay and the volcano are a brilliant addition to the restaurant. There’s nothing quite like eating fresh sushi with an active volcano view right?

7. Take a scenic train ride

kagoshima tourist information

The ‘Ibusuki no Tamatebako’ is a gorgeous train that takes you on a scenic route from Kagoshima-chuo Station to Ibusuki in Japan. The interior is very ‘Agatha Christie’ and is wonderfully ornate for a train.

Grab a window seat and kick back with a coffee from the service trolley and enjoy stunning sea views as you travel in style.

This has to be one of the most scenic train rides you will ever take as it passes by the bay, Sakurajima volcano and leafy residential areas. It is a must-do activity in Kagoshima.

kagoshima tourist information

8. Climb up Mt. Uomidake Observatory

kagoshima tourist information

If you are a fan of panoramic views this is a wonderful spot to get some great shots of Chiringashima Island. It’s a bit of a trek up but the views are really worth it.

Try and visit when the temperatures are a little cooler as it can get really hot and sticky on the walk-up. I was a hot mess by the time I got to the top, so make sure to pack some deodorant for the ascent.

If you want to see the sandbar disappear though, check the tide times and you can watch it sink beneath the water in front of your eyes. If your phone has a hyper lapse function, you can get a really cool time lapse of the vanishing sand bar. It’s a truly memorable experience.

9. Visit a food stall village

kagoshima tourist information

The Kagoshima Furusato Yataimura food stall village is a collection of small restaurants where you can try a range of Japanese food offerings.

It’s really nice to wander around and visit several different stalls so that you can sample a range of dishes including rice dishes, seafood dishes, noodle dishes and meat dishes.

Japan doesn’t really have much of a ‘street food culture’ in the same way than Thailand does, so this is your chance to experience a rare foodie find in Japan.

Sit inside the small restaurants or outside on stools perched over tiny tables slurping up udon noodles. The atmosphere is really lively and friendly as locals gather to eat, drink and catch up with friends.

kagoshima tourist information

10. Have an outdoor lunch in the forest

kagoshima tourist information

Having a forest lunch in the Kirishima Open-Air Museum is like something out of a fairy tale. You can sit amongst nature in a forested setting. Enjoy a beautifully prepared lunch as you listen to the sounds of nature. It’s very zen, darlings.

The lunch platter is incredibly colourful and vibrant and contrasts well with the surroundings. It is a very calm and almost spiritual way to have lunch, especially as the food is so fresh and healthy. It almost seems a shame digging into such a neatly presented plate of food. Hunger will surely get the better of you though?

11. Enjoy a luxury stay at Shiroyama Hotel

kagoshima tourist information

Spoil yourself with a luxurious stay at the Shiroyama Hotel. This grand hotel has an incredible open-air, natural hot spring bath that overlooks Sakurajima Volcano and the bay area.

Be aware that this bathing facility is an ‘onsen’, so you’ll have to overcome any prudishness and strip off. When in Kagoshima and all that….

There is also a multitude of dining options in Kagoshima as well as boutique shops, concierge and a spa centre. If you are looking for a little indulgence when staying in Kagoshima, this is definitely the place for you.

Kagoshima is just a short flight away from Tokyo with Ana Airlines, making it a perfect addition to a Japan itinerary.

It is a real contrast from the hectic pace of Tokyo and is the ideal place to relax and unwind after visiting Japan’s capital. Would you visit this charming area of Japan?
