One of Tokyo Disneyland’s largest attractions, the Jungle Cruise is an outdoor, group boat ride through some of the world’s best-known tropical waterways. Your skipper tells jokes and stories as you pass through forest and jungle, populated entirely by animatronic animals (some hostile) and natives.

The line for Jungle Cruise can get quite long, and there is no FastPass. We recommend riding near the end of the night.

How's It Different From the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Versions?

There are many exclusive elements to Tokyo Disneyland's Jungle Cruise, including music, a story that could be different each time you ride, and the use of some great looking projection effects in the temple. Each time you ride, your skipper will tell you about an animal spirit that will help you through the difficult situations you're about to encounter. Skippers present one of three amulets, each representing a different animal (the tiger, the elephant, and the monkey). The skipper tells everyone on the boat (or "bote" as the skippers spell it) call upon the animal spirits by making that animal’s sound together during the cruise. It's funny to see an entire boat of people making an elephant noise together.

Is it English Friendly?

No, every word out of the skipper's mouth is in Japanese. But, if you're even remotely a Jungle Cruise fan then we recommend giving it a try due to it being so different from any of the other Jungle Cruise attractions.

The History and Evolution of the Disney’s Jungle Cruise

Since it opened in Disneyland Park in July of 1955, Jungle Cruise has become one of the most iconic attractions in Disney’s theme park catalogue. Everything from the distinctive ride vehicles, comical tableaus, animatronic animals, and even the purposely over-the-top skipper spiel have become iconic elements of the Disney theme park experience, explaining why the Jungle Cruise has been cloned to nearly every Disney resort around the world.

However, despite its beloved stature, the attraction has met its fair share of controversy over the years, which has led to numerous changes, including a major refurbishment in 2021 .

To analyze this attraction’s controversial history, we must first look at its origins, years before Disneyland was constructed.

The origins.

The origins of the Jungle Cruise can be traced back to the late 1940s, when Walt Disney Pictures began production on their True-Life Adventures series. Beginning with Seal Island in 1948, these somewhat staged wildlife documentaries followed various groups of animals in their natural habitats. The series was so successful with movie-goers and critics that it eventually evolved from two-reel shorts to full-length documentary films that quickly became a cornerstone of Walt Disney Studios.  

Guests would view the animals from skipper-guided ride-vehicles modeled after the titular boat from the 1951 hit film The African Queen, while traveling through a jungle designed by Disneyland landscape extraordinaire Bill Evans.  

Welcome to the Jungle

Jungle Cruise opened with the rest of Disneyland on July 17, 1955. However, a modern guest would be hard-pressed to recognize much of the attraction. Sure they would be familiar with Goff’s general concept, and if they squinted they could imagine how the rather light jungle Evans planted would grow into the lush greenery seen today, but many iconic elements of the attraction would be absent. There was no ad-libbed humor from the skippers, who played the entire experience straight. In fact, there was no humor period.  

The Jungle Cruise, like Disneyland overall, was a massive success upon its opening, quickly becoming an integral part of American pop culture. However, as the park’s first decade came to a close, Walt Disney felt his park needed some new blood. According to legend, he once overheard a child ask his mother to ride the Jungle Cruise and was aghast when the mother responded that they’d ridden it last time and didn’t need to again. Whether this story is apocryphal or not, in the early 1960s Walt brought over animator Marc Davis from the Studios to “plus up” some of Disneyland’s attractions.  

One of the first attractions Davis – who would go on to become one of the company’s most influential Imagineers – worked on was Jungle Cruise. A visual comedian by nature, Davis decided to liven up the attraction by adding the playful elephant pool and comical trapped safari sequences.

These comedic elements in-turn influenced the ride’s skipper narration, which became more and more comical over the years. Davis’ changes led to the attraction becoming even more popular.  

Disney World’s Jungle Cruise

The Jungle Cruise’s status as one of Disney’s premier attractions was further solidified when a version of the ride opened with Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom in 1971.

The Orlando version of the ride was similar to its Anaheim counterpart, though not a direct clone, and served the same purpose as the anchor attraction of the park’s Adventureland section.

Jungle Cruise International

A near-direct clone of the Magic Kingdom version of the attraction opened with Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, but when Disneyland Paris, then known as EuroDisney, opened in 1992, the park became the first “castle park” not to feature a Jungle Cruise on opening day. This was due partially to the cold French climate not being hospitable to water rides and partially because there were several knockoff Jungle Cruises already built at various French amusement parks.

Disneyland Levels Up

While these alternate versions of the Jungle Cruise were being built around the world, the Disneyland original continued to be “plussed” over the years. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, various new animals and show-scenes were added to the attraction. The biggest changes up to that point came in 1994, when the attraction was rerouted and shortened to make room for the then-upcoming Indiana Jones Adventure attraction. In addition, the ride (and the entirety of Adventureland) were rethemed to be set in the 1930s to tie into Indy.  

While these changes were substantial, they were nothing compared to the original plans , which were going to see a portion of the Jungle Cruise take place inside the Indiana Jones show building, as part of a plan to build a massive complex that would house four attractions.  

Holiday Overlays

Following these mid-90s refurbishments, the Jungle Cruise continued to be one of Disney’s marquee attractions. As a testament to said importance, in 2013, both American versions of the attraction were given a holiday overlay and temporarily renamed The Jingle Cruise.

The overlay was so successful that it was greatly expanded for 2014, and remained in both parks through 2016. For reasons unknown, Disneyland dropped The Jingle Cruise from its Holiday offerings in 2017, though the overlay remains a Magic Kingdom staple to this day.  

Controversy in the Jungle

Despite Jungle Cruise’s ongoing popularity, in recent decades the attraction has become controversial due to its purported negative depictions of native people, specifically the “headhunter” party as well as the Trader Sam “head salesman” character.  

In January 2021,  Disney announced that it would be making significant story changes to the Jungle Cruise at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World to alleviate these issues. Carmen Smith, creative development and inclusion strategies executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, explained the changes in a statement to the Los Angeles Times , saying:  

As Imagineers, it is our responsibility to ensure experiences we create and stories we share reflect the voices and perspectives of the world around us. With Jungle Cruise, we’re bringing to life more of what people love – the humor and wit of our incredible skippers — while making needed updates.

Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger added , “The exciting changes we’re making to one of Disney’s most popular classic attractions, Jungle Cruise, reflect our commitment to creating unparalleled experiences that reflect, not only the best in storytelling, but also the values and rich diversity of our world.”

As part of these announcements, Disney made it clear that these changes to the attraction were not going to be related to the upcoming film based on the attraction.

Said film, simply titled Jungle Cruise , was released in July of 2021. The film starred Dwayne Johnson, Emily Blunt, Édgar Ramírez, Jack Whitehall, Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti and was directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. It was such a hit, a sequel is already in the works.

It featured its own version of Main Street USA, Sleeping Beauty Castle, Autopia, Matterhorn and Jungle Cruise. It eventually closed permanently in 2006 and was left abandoned. It has begun to fall into a state of disrepair and is a favourite destination for Japan’s urban explorers, or haikyoists, as they’re known.

The original Disneyland opened in Anaheim in California in 1955. Nara Dreamland followed just 6 years later, opening to the public in 1961. The park was almost a carbon copy of Disneyland. It featured copies of the themed areas – Main Street USA, Adventureland, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. Attractions that were copied included Sleeping Beauty Castle, Autopia, Skyway, Tea Cup Ride, Submarine Voyage, the monorail, the pirate ship, double decker omnibusses, vintage cars and the train. From above, the layout of the park was almost identical. Even the entrance looked the exact same.

After World War II, industry in Japan was booming. The United States helped rebuild the economy after the war and American culture became extremely popular in Japan. One Japanese businessman was keen to capitalise on the trend. Kanizo Matsuo, president of the Matsuo Entertainment Company, visited the newly opened Disneyland on a trip to Los Angeles. He was immediately impressed and sought a meeting with Walt Disney. His plan was to build a similar park in Nara, Japan’s old capital , and licence the designs and characters from Disney. Matsuo began working with WED Enterprises, the subsidiary of Disney behind construction of Disneyland and the precursor for what became known as Walt Disney Imagineering .

Kunizo Matsuo began construction of the Japanese version Disneyland in Nara under the company name Japanese Dream Sightseeing Company. As building progressed however, Matsuo took issue with the licence fee being sought by Disney for use of its famous characters. Rather than abandon the project, JDSC paid WED Enterprises for the help they’d received in building the park to that point and created their own branding and characters for the newly renamed Nara Dreamland. It opened on July 1st 1961. Ran-chan and Dori-chan were the park’s mascots.

Nara Dreamland was popular for a time and welcomed 1.6 million guests at its peak. Despite starting out as a carbon copy of Disneyland, other attractions were added over the years to take it in another direction. A wooden roller coaster called Aska was built, based on  The Cyclone at Coney Island . There was Screw Coaster designed by Arrow Development.

Disneyland finally came to Japan on April 15th 1983 when the Oriental Land Company opened Tokyo Disneyland . They had done what Kunizo Matsuo had failed to do and successfully licensed the Disney brand and characters for their park. It was a massive success and visitor numbers at Nara Dreamland collapsed. The supermarket chain Daiei bought it later in 1993 but didn’t make any significant investments. In 2001, Universal Studios Japan opened in Osaka , just 40 kilometres (25 miles) away and attracted 11 million guests in its first year. Tokyo Disneysea also opened that year , turning Tokyo Disneyland into a two park resort. Nara Dreamland struggled on until August 31st 2006 before closing. It was in an extreme state of disrepair by the end.

Nara Dreamland joins a long list of abandoned theme parks in Asia including Wonderland in China and Okpo Land in South Korea . The theme park was sold to SK Housing in 2016 and it was finally demolished in 2017 to make way for housing.

Updated Jungle Cruise Opens at Disneyland

Walt Disney Imagineers completed a major refurbishment on Jungle Cruise, which reopened to guests today at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. Jungle Cruise is one of the original opening day attractions from Disneyland’s opening on July 17, 1955.

The ride underwent refurbishments to become more politically friendly with its depiction and diversity of characters. This opened up the opportunity to improve several other areas of the adventures as well.

Jungle Cruise – the Updates

Here are some of the updates to the new version of Jungle Cruise:

The new scenes, backstory, and updated animatronics aim to create an enhanced story and guest experience.

“We’re excited to be building on the story of the Jungle Cruise to include new adventures that stay true to the experience we know and love, while adding more humor, more wildlife, and an interconnected story,” says Chris Beatty, a Walt Disney Imagineer who played a key role in the enhancements. “As part of creative development, we’ve also introduced characters from around the world and took a thoughtful approach to ensure accurate representation of cultures in our story.”

Major upgrades to original disneyland rides.

The Jungle Cruise isn’t the first original opening day ride to receive a major upgrade this year. In late April, Disneyland unveiled a refurbished Snow White dark ride that it now calls Snow White’s Enchanted Wish .

Updating rides and the park was always a vision of Disneyland’s founder, Walt Disney. He once famously said, “Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is no imagination left in the world.”

Jungle Cruise: The Movie

Disney will be releasing the movie Jungle Cruise on July 30, 2021, in theaters and for a premium price on Disney+. The movie stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt in the lead roles and is somewhat based on the Disneyland attraction.

Disney resisted the urge to incorporate the new movie into the classic ride. That wasn’t the case with Pirates of the Caribbean, which was updated to add Johnny Depp in multiple scenes based on his portrayal of Jack Sparrow in the movie series.

The Jungle Cruise movie is 2 hours and 7 minutes long. The movie’s premiere will take place at Disneyland on July 24, 2021.

A legendary Disneyland ride got stuck, leaving guests stranded in the water.

The Disneyland Resort is home to some of the best and most beloved theme park rides, attractions, and experiences in the world. While the rest of the Disney parks and resorts may feature the same rides, the Disneyland Resort has all of the originals, and that’s worth a lot in its own right. At “The Happiest Place on Earth,” guests will find the superior versions of the Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean , “it’s a small world,” and Peter Pan’s Flight, as well as some unique experiences like Matterhorn Bobsleds and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.

There’s just something extra magical about the original Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California and while we’re huge fans of Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, we have to admit that Disneyland is special in its own way.

One of the other iconic Disneyland attractions is Jungle Cruise , a ride that has been copied many times.

The original Jungle Cruise at Disneyland’s Adventureland is a fantastic experience that will surely make you laugh. The attraction features a sarcastic and witty tour guide who guides you through “the world’s most remote rivers.” During your journey, you may encounter some dangerous and exotic animals as well as run into other explorers.

Highlights of your unforgettable adventure include:

• Ancient Cambodian Shrine Come face-to-face with leaping tigers, lethal cobras and snapping crocodiles.
• Jungle Cruise Safari Camp Cruise past a former camp overrun by explosively curious gorillas.
• Indian Elephant Bathing Pool Venture into this sacred pool where you’ll see bathing Indian elephants. Feel free to take pictures—they have their trunks on.
• The African Veldt Behold angry hippos and hungry lions guarding a sleeping zebra.

The attraction has become synonymous with the Disney parks, with The Walt Disney Company attempting to cash in on the success of the ride by releasing a feature-length film based on the ride. In 2021, Disney released its Jungle Cruise   film, which starred Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt. This is far from Disney’s first attempt to create a film based on a theme park ride, with the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise kicking things off in the early 2000s. Disney’s most recent attempt to bring a theme park ride to life was with 2023’s Haunted Mansion .

While neither  Jungle Cruise  nor Haunted Mansion  received the immediate praise and box office success of the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, these movies are incredibly fun and enjoyable, especially if you’re a Disney Park superfan.

Unfortunately, the Jungle Cruise attraction was cut short for certain guests after the entire boat got stuck in the water.

As reported by Apple News , guests experiencing Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise got stuck mid-ride, with their boat becoming immovable.

Video from the incident shows multiple Disneyland cast members attempting to move riders along the attraction’s track with help from a second boat towing them. Cast members can be heard discussing an issue regarding a “service engine,” as guests are pulled by ropes.

“We’re going to go ahead and continue our journey. You’re going to feel a slight tug,” the cast member tells the stuck guests. “No worries, guys, here we go. We’re now under someone else’s power. We’re saving gas.”

This is certainly not something you see every day at the Disneyland Resort, and while this may have been slightly scary for some, this is an incredibly cool and rare experience. Typically, when guests have to evacuate a ride or attraction, they are given a free pass that allows them to skip the standby line for certain other attractions.

Jungle Cruise was an opening day attraction for the Disneyland Resort, which opened all the way back in 1955. The ride has entertained millions of guests and can now be found across the globe, with locations at Walt Disney World in Florida, Tokyo Disneyland in Japan, and Hong Kong Disneyland in China.
