Bus drive until we swing on the bike. Today's stage is partly with a view of the river Reventazón. In 2016, the largest hydroelectric power station in Latin America was put into operation here. The generated energy will cover the needs of more than half a million households - an important step for Costa Rica on its way to climate neutrality. We continue the rest of the route to Sarapiquí on the bus. Today we will get to know the cordiality of the Ticos during a visit to the village of El Roble, where we prepare dinner with typical Costarrican delicacies and learn more about their main source of income, the cultivation of pepper. Early in the morning, you can discover the private Tirimbina Reserve on your own, a paradise for bird and nature lovers. With all your senses you can immerse yourself in the pulsing flora and fauna of the jungle. Then departure to the north. The first kilometres lead on an asphalted road, then you follow mostly dirt roads, passing pineapple plantations and the last stretch to Boca Tapada through the rainforest. The small village is located on the San Carlos River in the very north of the country, near the border river San Juan into which the San Carlos River flows. Here, life runs smoothly and in harmony with nature. The tourist infrastructure is limited to three small, family-run hotels that rent basic accommodation to nature lovers. Bike stage: approx. 37 km over partly paved, but mostly natural road Elevation difference: up 350m, down 438m Included meals today: Breakfast, dinner Included entrance fees/activities: None
First of all, we are going to do a cosy boat trip right from the hotel. Just before the border with Nicaragua, we get on the bicycles and drive a few kilometres parallel to the border crossing before we head over the hills and forest back to the lodge. In the afternoon, we continue the discovery of the rainforest on foot. The rest of the day is free to relax in the quiet environment or to go on a search of the tropical birds and lizards that like to visit the garden of the lodge. Bike stage: approx. 25km Height difference: up 418m, down 418m Included meals today: Breakfast, lunch, dinner Included entrance fees/activities: Boat tour
We swing back on the bike and take the route over San Marcos and Tabla Grande to Boca Arenal. Shortly before Boca Arenal, we will take the bus to La Fortuna, close to the Arenal volcano. In the evening, we are going to relax in one of the beautiful hot springs where we also enjoy our dinner. Bike stage: approx. 49 km Height difference: up 916m, down 879m Included meals today: Breakfast, dinner Included entrance fees/activities: Hot springs with dinner
Along a gravel road, we will drive to El Castillo on the southern side of Lake Arenal today. With the assistance of our support vehicle, we cross a river and then enjoy the quiet ride along the lake shore to Río Chiquito. Here, we take a boat to the other side of the lake where the bikes are loaded and lunch is already waiting for us. Then drive to the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Our charming hotel is located near the beach of Sámara between beautiful jungle plants, trees and flowers, which are always visited by howler monkeys and shy iguanas. The beach and the village are easily reached by foot/bike. Info: Due to operational conditions, the boat is only available up from 4 people. For a smaller group, the trip continues by bike or pick-up to Tilarán and from there on to the Pacific coast. Bike stage: approx. 32 km Height difference: up 530m, down 550m Included meals today: Breakfast, lunch Included entrance fees/activities: Boat crossing Lake Arenal (up from 4 participants)

Straight Talk
We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.
“Pura vida” , or “pure life”, is not just a Costa Rican greeting – it’s a state of mind. While Costa Rica’s tourist industry is well accustomed to welcoming foreign visitors, you may still notice that service here can lack a sense of urgency, reflecting the slower pace and relaxed approach to life that is typical throughout the region. As such, patience and a sense of humor are always recommended when traveling in Central America. Your Backroads leaders will be close by to ease the way.

Explore Costa Rica by Electric Bike
Electric bikes are a great way to explore international destinations. This is especially true when you aren’t comfortable with driving a car around high traffic areas in a place that you are unfamiliar with or if there is a lot of terrain that you want to cover in a short amount of time. When visiting a place like Costa Rica, electric bikes are easy to rent, easy to charge, and great for sightseeing. There are tours that you can take via electric bike and maps highlighting tourist attractions.
Article by Conner Flynn
The Benefits of Using an Electric Bike
Electric bikes are great for traveling in areas where you aren’t 100% sure of the terrain. They will save you from fatigue when walking on foot, as the electric bike has a motor that will do the hard work for you. If you take a wrong turn, you won’t have to backtrack on foot and be exhausted by the time you reach your destination.
Additionally, electric bikes often stay charged for up to 60 miles. With the popularity of electric bikes in Costa Rica, there are plenty of places to charge your bike so that you can travel for hours and hours exploring and sightseeing. If you stop to eat, charge your bike. If you stop to shop, you can be sure there will be a place to charge up too.
Electric Bike Tours
Tours, in general, are a great way to learn about a city, state, or country that you are unfamiliar with and are visiting either for work or for pleasure. There are many electric bike tours around Costa Rica that can take you seaside or inland. You can explore exotic destinations as well as tourist attractions.
Tour guides know the best places to eat, shop and visit. They know about the area and can answer questions that you have for just about anything.
Often there are:
Trail tours: these highlight nature and wildlife;
Seaside tours: these talk about the history of the area, the founding fathers, and aquatic life;
Downtown tours: downtown tours are awesome to learn about the nightlife, areas to visit (and avoid), and historical landmarks.
Renting an Electric Bike
Most people don’t travel with their electric bike; it’s just not worth the hassle. When you are traveling, finding a place that rents electric bikes is a great find.
While you may pay a premium for renting the bike and additional insurance or deposits, it is typically well worth the expense. The hotel or resort you are staying in can help you find a reputable place to rent equipment that won’t leave you stranded in a foreign country. Costa Rica is a country that has great bike rental places at an affordable cost.
Exciting Destinations
If you find yourself looking for a particularly exciting destination on your trip, visit the Hotel Hacienda Guachipelin . Located in the Guanacaste province next to the Rincon de la Vieja National Park, the hotel offers amazing tours.
Some of the tours include:
- Archeological
- Butterfly and Frog Exhibit
- Canyon Canopy Zip Line Tour
- La Cangreja, Las Chorreras, and Oropendola waterfalls
- Rio Negro Hot Springs
- Electric mountain bike tour
Choose a Bike
Many bike rental places have a variety of different bikes to choose from. You can get a standard electric bike, typically referred to as a sport model. There are also higher classes of bikes, such as all-terrain, hard tail, and tandem bikes.
Many places also don’t limit you to just a few hours. Some places will rent you an electric bike for up to a month, for those with extended travel plans or temporary residency.
Should you find yourself in Costa Rica, be sure to take advantage of the numerous places that have electric bikes for rent, the charging stations, and the tours that you can take via electric bike. The use of an electric bike will make your trip all the more memorable and enjoyable. You can learn more about electric bikes here , as well as other fun gadgets.

The top 5 best mountain bike tours in monteverde, costa rica.
Monteverde is a beautiful and adventurous destination for mountain bikers, offering challenging terrain and stunning natural surroundings. From exploring the Cloud Forest Reserve to riding through the Arenal Volcano National Park, there are plenty of exciting mountain bike tours in Monteverde.
In this article, I will highlight the area’s top 5 mountain bike tours, each offering a unique and unforgettable experience for riders of all skill levels. Whether you are a seasoned mountain biker or just starting, these tours will surely provide an exciting and memorable adventure.
I’ll also give you the links to easily book them online. So grab your helmet and get ready to hit the Monteverde, Costa Rica trails!
The Top 5 Best Monteverde Mountain Bike Tours
The following are the top 5 best Mountain Bike Tours in Monteverde, which I listed in order of approximate duration.
You will notice that all of them are on E-Bikes (i.e., Electric Mountain Bikes), and we do them on E-Bikes due to the difficulty of the terrain in Monteverde. We have very steep climbs here, which make Mountain Biking pretty tricky, but when you have an electronic bike, things get much more fun and easygoing.
However, if you’re a fit rider, you can either lower the power on the E-Bike or turn it off altogether for the entire trip or for a part of it to get a great workout.
With that out of the way, let’s go over the list!
- Sunset MTB E-Bike Tour
- Sunrise MTB E-Bike Tour
- Cloud Forest MTB E-Bike Tour
- El Tigre MTB E-Bike Tour
- Lake Trail MTB E-Bike Tour
Sunset Monteverde Mountain Bike Tour
Available daily from December through April and starting at 4:30 PM, the Epic Sunset Monteverde Mountain Bike Tour is a fantastic 2-hour guided ride on an electric mountain bike to contemplate a fabulous sunset overlooking the Gulf of Nicoya as the sun kisses the ocean far away.
You will first need to get to the meeting point, about a 5-minute drive from Santa Elena, Monteverde (you will get a Google Map on your confirmation email after booking online).
Then, you will ride for about 45 minutes to reach a unique, private lookout to see the sunset and have some snacks, included with the tour, before moving on to ride on some of Monteverde’s best backroads for mountain biking.
The tour includes:
- Use of Helmet
- High-end E-Bikes
- Snacks (Fruit, Water, Bars)
- Flat Pedals (to fit sneakers)
- Bike Adjustment (to fit your size)
This fantastic experience starts at $99 + taxes per person and requires a basic fitness level and an intermediate MTB skill level (i.e., you train at least once a week, and you can pedal for two hours on varied terrain). The minimum age is 12. It is only available for small groups (1 to 4 people + Tour Guide) and requires a reservation at least three days before your desired tour date .
Sunrise Monteverde Mountain Bike Tour

Cloud Forest Monteverde Mountain Bike Tour
Available daily, year-round, and starting at 8 AM, the Cloud Forest Monteverde Mountain Bike Tour is a fantastic 3.5-hour guided ride on an electric mountain bike around some of the most beautiful, less touristy backroads of Monteverde.
Then, our Tour Guide will have a short briefing where your guide will agree with you on a route that will match your experience level. And off you will have a fantastic time checking out places most tourists can’t access, such as hidden lookouts with gorgeous views of some of Monteverde’s most beautiful spots.
- Hydration Mix
This outstanding experience starts at $109 + taxes per person, requires a moderate fitness level and an intermediate MTB skill level (i.e., you train at least three times a week, and you can pedal for three hours on varied terrain). El Tigre Monteverde Mountain Bike Tour
Available daily year-round and starting at 7:30 AM, the El Tigre Waterfall Monteverde Mountain Bike Tour is a fantastic adventure that combines 2.5 hours of mountain biking with 2 hours of trekking and 30 minutes of horseback riding.
Then, you will ride for about 2 hours to reach El Tigre Waterfalls, a popular, emblematic park on the outskirts of Monteverde. Next, you will make El Tigre Waterfall’s trail to see four beautiful waterfalls, crossing multiple hanging bridges on a 5 KM downhill trail.
Then, you will go on a 30-minute horseback ride uphill to close the loop of the El Tigre Waterfalls’ trail, getting back to reception, where you left your bike. And finally, you will ride for another 30 minutes to get back to the meeting point where your adventure began a few hours earlier.
This fantastic experience starts at $169 + taxes per person, requires an advanced fitness level and an intermediate MTB skill level (i.e., you train almost daily, and you can pedal for four hours on varied terrain). Then, you will go on a massive 800-meter (2,700 feet) descent bordering the Children’s Eternal Forest, featuring some of the most astonishing
views in Costa Rica, before reaching the town of Rio Chiquito on Arenal Lake’s shore. Then we will return to Monteverde through the colorful route of Las Nubes de Tilarán.
The return to Monteverde can be an overwhelmingly long and challenging task. However, a support vehicle will aid you throughout the 4-hour-ish climb, with enough snacks and hydration to keep you going or take you on board should you need to call it a day.
- Support Vehicle to aid the Tour Group
This fantastic experience starts at $195 + taxes per person and requires an advanced fitness level (i.e., you train almost daily, and you can pedal for six hours on varied terrain) and an intermediate MTB skill level. The minimum age is 18. It is only available for small groups (1 to 4 people + Tour Guide) and requires a reservation at least one week before your desired tour date .
