Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees. BauBax is back with version 3.0 of their famous BauBax travel jacket.

It’s always nice for my little crowdfunding heart to see a campaigner make multiple good campaigns and continually upgrade their products with the help of the backer community.

The BauBax Travel Jacket has all the functions of a windbreaker. Still, it also comes with so many new features that you would typically find in some extra camping gear. From hidden pockets, hand warmers, and even face masks and eye masks!

Prepare your eyes and torso because BauBax is here to show you how campaigners should do it.

The Product

Is this a truly new product that you canā€™t find on the market? Or this is a product that defines an entirely new product category. In some cases, the combination of several features into one or the introduction of a new feature to an old product are also considered to be an innovation .

When the BauBax Travel Jacket Volume 2 hit Kickstarter in 2018, it became the “#1 Most Funded Kickstarter Fashion Project” ever -and it’s been the top stop ever since.

Looking at a jacket from an innovation perspective, it has all the essential features needed while incorporating two crucial elements that make a BauBax Travel Jacket recognizable.Ā

First of all, it has loads of great features to upgrade your travel. The most amazing one they added this time is a color-matching face mask to make you travel safely and in style. Secondly, this jacket’s refined design and look are so much more stylish than the last one.

Don’t get me wrong, the previous design was great, but this is amazing. I’ve tried going over many standard retailers looking for windbreakers or other travel jackets, and we couldn’t find anything that has the same price point, look, and functionality.Ā

Since they removed some of the features from the last jacket, we would initially give this version a lower score. Still, since they have made this jacket just a tad more minimalistic, it increases the score back up. The face mask and the new sustainable fabric also added some points.Ā

Competitiveness

How much better is it than the competition? Is it faster? Bigger? Cooler? More affordable? There needs to be a solid reason why you should back this project over any other.

Famously promising 25 features in their previous jacket, some backers would be confused to see that this new version has fewer features. However, from my analysis, they have ditched some of the less crucial features and instead gone for minimalism.Ā

Being serial crowdfunders with a massive community of backers, we are sure they have also listened to a lot of the feedback from the previous backers in making this product.Ā

The most noticeable removals to the V3 is the drinks pocket ( which wasn’t so important anyways ), whistle, keychain, and the stylus zipper. But because these features are not crucial for survival and many people have other tools to reach the same purpose, many backers will be happy with the few-but-higher-impact features of the new BauBax travel jacket V3.Ā

The most crucial point is that while searching the internet for similar jackets, We could find a bunch of windbreakers that sounded similar, but a lot of them were off. Many jackets marketed themselves by having a significant amount of pockets. But the BauBax also includes extra functionality like a face mask and an eye mask.Ā

Some other jackets were quite stylish but had a price point of over $250, while others had cool features but didn’t look that great. It’s not that often we see a product where their main competitor is themselves, let alone a campaigner whose previous product is still #1 on Kickstarter in the Fashion Category.Ā

We could go on for hours if BauBax would ever be able to outcompete themselves. We hope they will do that one day, but it’s hard to take a step up from a campaign so successful as their previous.Ā

From an expert standpoint, it is not good enough as a serial campaigner to just make another excellent product that is even better than the last one; the key is building and nurturing the community of previous backers. The crowdfunding community is unique, and many backers will stay loyal to a line of products if they have enough reason to believe.Ā

We have some suggestions on how BauBax can do this. More about that in the following sections.Ā

Reliability

How capable is the team? Have they developed something like this before? Do they have crowdfunding experience? Manufacturing experience? A lot of campaigns fail to deliver their product because they donā€™t know what theyā€™re doing.

In November 2020, we reviewed the 6th campaign of BauBax: the travel shoes. We gave them a reliability score of 28/30.Ā

Most of the rating was based on the sheer amount of backers who continually trusted them, their previous expertise in delivering high-quality products, and connecting with their audience.Ā

We rarely give a team 30/30, but from simply seeing the comments on their previous campaign page, we cannot help but smile. The customer service of BauBax seems just excellent, and there are remarkable stories on how the BauBax team solved returns and size changes in a fantastic way.Ā

As is standard with most Kickstarter campaigns, campaigners face shipping issues. From my mandatory checkup on backer comments from previous campaigns, we see that some people supposedly have not received their pledges. Even more unlucky, BauBax has had to ship some products during covid, adding extra stress to a process that is already hard.Ā

From having worked in crowdfunding myself, We know for a fact that there are a lot of backers that don’t know there are a couple of final steps to ensure that the package will arrive at their door. You’ll have to respond to backer surveys, and some backers forget to do that. Nevertheless, we do not wish to blame the victims. Most of the time, the campaigner is at fault when someone’s product doesn’t arrive.Ā

However, from looking at the trajectory of comments, the BauBax team is getting increasingly good at ensuring delivery and good customer service. It seems like the shipping success rate is nearing 100%, which is almost impossible if you don’t use amazon fulfillment or other mainstream shipping services. From what we can see from the backer comments, BauBax, we advise you to sell replaceable parts separately if someone breaks a part of their jacket.Ā

If you purchase the BauBax Travel Jacket 3.0, we can assure you that you will receive it. Keep in mind that all Kickstarter campaigns are more than three months late in delivery. The rule (not the exception) in crowdfunding is that every campaign, no matter how experienced the campaigners, will face delays. So stay patient.Ā

How transparent are the campaigners? Do they give their backers valuable updates on their progress? Do they engage with their backers? Crowdfunding is all about community, sharing information, and building meaningful relationships with the people who fund your project.

The BauBax team’s attitude to the backers is polite, responding swiftly. The customer service team is excellent.Ā

We have seen cases of serial crowdfunding campaigners opening Facebook groups for their backers to reach engagement, get user-generated content, and receive feedback. BauBax has an excellent opportunity to make such a group and get all their loyal backers and fans in there.

BauBax 3.0 Travel Jacket Review

Conclusion & Public Opinion

All in all, the BauBax Travel Jacket V3 is a more fresh, minimalistic, and stylish take on their super famous Travel Jacket (#1 Fashion Project on Kickstarter). With the removal of certain features and new additions, this travel jacket seems like a genuinely new product that still has the same soul as their previous project.Ā

Pairing this with their beautiful travel shoes and travel pants, you’ll need no outside clothes anymore.Ā

BauBax has listened to feedback and created a more minimalistic design in their V3 travel jacket. This version removes some less crucial features, such as the drinks pocket, whistle, keychain, and stylus zipper. However, many backers will still be happy with the new design because it is fresh and stylish. The BauBax team attitude is polite, and they respond in a speedy manner.Ā

The pure review conclusion can be put like this: “We struggled with not backing this campaign writing this review.” But we hope that BauBax will send one or two jackets to the Tech I Want office.

We Tested All the 20-Plus Features of the Baubax Travel Jacket

Lori Zaino

One afternoon, on a mindless scroll through my Instagram feed, something caught my eye: an ad for a Baubax travel jacket with more than 20 special features designed specifically for travelers. Finally, a sponsored post that was relevant to me.

I clicked through to the Baubax website and was intrigued by the bomber jacket, which came in six sizes, three colors and claimed to have the following travel features:

  • A passport pocket
  • A drink pocket (wait, what?)
  • A bottle opener
  • Hand-warming pockets
  • Glasses pocket
  • Tablet pocket
  • Top secret pocket (also, huh?)
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Power bank pocket
  • Earbuds pocket
  • Zipper pen and stylus
  • Earbuds holder
  • Phone pocket
  • Travel water bottle
  • Inflatable footrest
  • Travel blanket
  • Built-in eye mask
  • Inflatable neck pillow (with in-hood storage)
  • Detachable gloves
  • Earplugs and case

Basically, the jacket promises to be the only travel accessory you need. So, of course, we needed to see if it fits the bill.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

The bomber jacket is black and the outer shell is 100% polyester. It arrived in a sleek bag, and the presentation was nice. It's not designed to be waterproof, but repels light splashes of water. The windbreaker option, though lighter, is the one to pick if you need something truly waterproof. You can machine wash the jacket, but you'll need to take out some of the travel accessories first. The hood is detachable, and the recommended temperature to wear the bomber jacket is between 45 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. I think that claim is a bit of a stretch because I was cold wearing the jacket in 45- and 50-degree weather, and would definitely not recommend it for use in snow, rain or other severe weather.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

It's stylish, though basic, and coordinates with most outfits. Its travel features are well-disguised. It isn't super lightweight, but it can be rolled up small or packed for travel. When many of the accessories (think: travel blanket and footrest) are stored in the pockets, it gets considerably heavier.

The jacket feels comfortable and relatively warm. I bought a medium, and it fits true to size. However, it's not super soft or luxurious, like a leather, down or fur coat might be. In general, the jacket successfully balances practicality and stylishness.

In terms of durability and quality, the jacket seems well-made, especially the outer polyester shell ā€” though some of the stitches on the inside pockets had a number of loose threads. The zippers all worked easily, as did the snaps connected to the hood.

My Experience

I ordered the women's bomber jacket (they also have products for men) online through a quick and painless process. I paid $159 for the jacket (I used a promo code I found online for $20 off the sale price of $179, originally $300). I was relieved to get the sale price, because $300 seemed too much to pay for a polyester travel jacket, especially one more suited for fall or spring and not really warm enough for winter.

My order was tracked by email from confirmation, to shipping and delivery within a few days of my order. I was pleased at the delivery speed, because the holidays were right around the corner and I expected things to take longer.

I tested the jacket on flights from Tucson International (TUS) to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW), from Dallas to CancĆŗn International (CUN) and from CancĆŗn to Madrid-Barajas Adolfo SuĆ”rez Airport (MAD). I also wore the jacket around Madrid on warmer winter days to see how it fared as a "normal" jacket. After all, a travel jacket should be ideal for wear on planes, trains and automobiles, but it also needs to be comfortable and practical once you've arrived in your destination.

It's clear the jacket holds up well as its primary function (being a jacket). But what about those special travel features? Do they work? Are they handy? Would I actually use them?

baubax travel jacket 3.0

The Passport Pocket: This feature was helpful, especially if you're someone who misplaces your passport. However, I'm the kind of person who tosses my jacket carelessly somewhere and forgets about it, so I think I'll keep storing my passport in my purse or tote while traveling, just in case I get hot and take off my jacket.

The Drink Pocket: The odds that I would ever walk around with a drink in here are slim to none. It is a fun feature, but far more appropriate for a frat party than a plane.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

Bottle Opener: I distinctly recall a moment at the Madrid airport Sala VIP lounge when I couldn't find a bottle opener for my glass bottle. This really could have come in handy then. Although I don't really frequent campgrounds, it could be useful for camping or hiking.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

Safety Whistle: This is an amazing feature that's actually part of the bottle opener. Although I haven't had to use it and, hopefully never will, having a safety whistle makes me feel better when traveling, especially since I am a woman who frequently travels solo . It could also be used to scare animals away when hiking, or even when in a country where a lot of stray dogs roam around.

Hand-Warming Pockets: These are just regular pockets. I repeat: just REGULAR POCKETS. I would not consider this a special feature.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

The Glasses Pocket: I did use this for swapping out eyeglasses and sunglasses, a nice touch. You could fit a slim glasses case in there, too.

The Tablet Pocket: This came in handy on my flight when I was seated in the exit row and wanted to keep my Kindle with me, as I couldn't have any items stored in the seat in front of me. However, the jacket felt bulkier with a tablet or e-reader stored there.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

The Pen Pocket: The jacket already has a pen, so this seems a little unnecessary, but it could be useful if both you and your seatmate needed to fill out a customs form ... simultaneously.

Top Secret Pocket: I can't tell you where this is, it's top secret. Just kidding. It has an RFID blocking feature, so it may be a good spot to store any credit cards.

Microfiber Cloth: Having this is really useful if you wear glasses or sunglasses, especially if you store them without a case in the glasses pocket.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

Power Bank Pocket: Confession: I just used this pocket for tissues, and stored my power bank in one of the other pockets. Obviously, a lot of these pockets are interchangeable and you can put whatever you want in them. Now if only the jacket came with an actual attached power bank or charger ā€” that would be a much more compelling feature.

Earbuds Pocket: You can store anything small in here, such as cough drops or lip balm. Or earbuds, as the instructions suggest.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

Zipper Pen and Stylus: The stylus works better on phones without tempered glass screen covers, and I haven't used the pen yet, but gone are the days I'll need to flag down a flight attendant who will give me a disapproving stare for not having my own pen to fill out the custom forms. Now, I'll always have one!

baubax travel jacket 3.0

Earbuds Holder: I liked the concept, but in reality, the rubbery straps got stuck in my hair and tangled in my sweatshirt. They'd be much easier to use with just wireless earbuds, but then, what's the point? The good news is, you can easily remove this rubber holder from the jacket, which I plan on doing.

The Phone Pocket: It's always useful to have a coat with pockets large enough to store your phone. Again, this came in handy when I sat in the exit row and couldn't have my bag in front of me during takeoff, but I don't plan on making it a habit to store my phone in my coat for the same reason I don't want to leave my passport in my jacket.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

Travel Water Bottle: I'm a huge fan of these fold-up water bottles, and I've used the bottle a number of times now, with and without the jacket.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

Inflatable Footrest: This is pretty awesome, though the coat does get bulky if you store this in the pocket. It inflates really quickly with just a few breaths. I'd like to inflate this and use it on my next long-haul economy flight. I also don't plan on frequently napping in parks, but it did the trick. (Please know, I did this for the sake of journalism.)

Travel Blanket: I'm disappointed with the blanket, honestly. It's extremely thin and poor quality. I was hoping it would be cashmere (a girl can dream) but tough luck! It's more useful as a thin travel scarf.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

Built-in Eye Mask: This feature is amazing. Not only does it do a fairly good job of blocking out light, but you'll never lose it because it's attached. Although you must have the hood up to use the eye mask , it's sort of a whole mood: "I hate everyone, leave me alone, I'm in my personal cocoon." Also, I don't care that I look like a huge nerd.

Inflatable Neck Pillow: While this isn't the greatest neck pillow I've ever used, it's not bad for an inflatable one, and you really can't feel it at all when it's stored in the hood. I often forget to pack an inflatable neck pillow when I travel, so I love the idea of always having one with me.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

Detachable Gloves: These are actually fingerless, thin hand warmers. While they definitely aren't appropriate for really cold weather (though neither is the jacket) it's a nice touch to have them on a chilly evening, and they can easily be stored in the jacket without making it bulky.

Earplugs and Case: These aren't your average drugstore earplugs (they look like little rubber evergreen trees, with three tiers on a stem). In my experience, they didn't block out the noise as well as the cheap foam ones did though. Still, you can use the little case to store them in the jacket, or swap them for ones that work better for you.

The Verdict: 8/10

baubax travel jacket 3.0

While this isn't the most luxurious or warmest jacket out there, many of the travel features are useful, and a few are pretty awesome, like the built-in eye mask, safety whistle, water bottle and the inflatable neck pillow stored in the hood. Plus, the jacket's multiple pockets are great for traveling. However, if you can't manage to find a promo code and the jacket is not on sale, I think $300 is simply too much to pay for this jacket.

Best For: Anyone traveling in economy or on a low-cost carrier (such as Spirit or Ryanair) who may need a little extra comfort and may not have as many options when it comes to checking bags.

Don't Use: I don't recommend this jacket for anyone who travels frequently to chilly destinations and needs a heavier coat. I'm a little sad I have to wait until spring to start using it because it's just too cold at the moment. If you can manage to get the jacket on sale, it would be a great addition to your travel wardrobe for both men and women.

Inflate a pillow, unfurl a blanket, blow up a foot rest, and flip down an eye mask ā€“Ā  the BauBax 2.0 Jacket packs loads of built-in extras to ease the hassles of travel.

baubax 20 travel jacket

If James Bond and Inspector Gadget made a coat, this would be it. Seattle-based BauBax blasted onto the apparel scene in 2015 when it raised more than $9 million on Kickstarter. Its travel-focused jackets housed 15 unheard-of extras aimed at simplifying travel.

baubax 2.0 zipper pen

Today, the brand launched BauBax 2.0 . Like its predecessor from three years ago, the new piece sports an inflatable neck pillow, built-in gloves, drink koozie pocket, and retractable pen. But the brand went a step (or 10) further to pack in more features and offer new styles.

BauBax 2.0 Travel Jacket

The bulk of BauBax 2.0’s features target the headaches of air travel. One pocket houses noise-cancelling ear plugs (included), and another has earphone ports for your tunes.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

The trademark two-breath inflatable neck pillow deploys from the collar, just like the original. But feet receive a pillow of their own in the 2.0 with an inflatable footrest. And a stowaway travel blanket helps fend of the meat-cooler conditions most airplane cabins provide.

Like the old jacket, there’s an insulated drink koozie chest pocket, but now there’s also a foldable water bottle to go along with it. And while there are still dedicated pockets for both a phone and a tablet, designers added a wireless headphone pocket and wired straps to plug into Apple AirPods.

And since there’s no point stopping at 10 when you could just take it to 11, there’s also a whistle, bottle opener, and retractable keychain, each with their own stash compartment. In case you’re a more visual learner, here are the BauBax 2.0 features in full:

BauBax 2.0 Styles

As part of the “tons of constructive feedback” the brand said it received following its launch, BauBax 2.0 adds a new style to its lineup.

Gone is the 1.0 hooded “travel blazer.” Because let’e face it, you want to look either sharp or lazy ā€“ not both.

baubax travel jacket 3.0

In its place is a more classically styled vest. This accompanies the carryover styles: zip-up hoodie, windbreaker, and bomber jacket.

The coup de grĆ¢ce of the ensemble is a “Top Secret” RFID-blocking pocket. According to BauBax, this pocket sits in a different location for each style, and its whereabouts are “not public information.”

BauBax 2.0 will run between $175 and $225 depending on style. But you can nab one now at discount on itsĀ  Kickstarter .

Here at Her Packing List, we love to travel light .

Items that serve multiple purposes or make it so our stuff takes up less space can be super helpful.

These days many airlines are getting stricter about carry-ons, leaving many of us looking for new ways to pack carry-on only .

So when some members of the HPLWorld community started talking about the BauBax travel jacket (with its 25 built-in features), we wanted to learn more.

BauBax travel jacket review - features

Features of the BauBax travel jacket

BauBax makes four different travel jackets : a bomber, a sweatshirt, a windbreaker, and a blazer.

They come with many features meant to make travel easier , like a built-in inflatable neck pillow, an eye mask, and many pockets specifically designed for things like your phone, tablet, passport, and more. It even has a drink holder pocket. The jackets come in male and female versions.

BauBax Travel Jacket Features:

  • Neck pillow
  • Drink pocket
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Sunglass pocket
  • Tablet pocket
  • Hand-warming pockets
  • Earphone holder
  • Passport pocket
  • Phone pocket
  • Pen + Stylus
  • Charger pocket
  • Blanket pocket

But we wanted to hear from people who have actually used a BauBax jacket. Hereā€™s what a couple of our readers had to say.

The BauBax Sweatshirt Jacket

Aggie owns the sweatshirt and told me what she likes and doesnā€™t like about it.

BauBax travel sweatshirt review

What do you like about the BauBax sweatshirt?

I love that it has so many pockets to store things and I donā€™t always have to carry a purse/shoulder bag around.

Because Iā€™m a travel blogger and daily sketcher, I carry a travel sized sketch kit which includes a pocket sized sketchbook, watercolour paint palette and a pen and water brush. The jacket has plenty of storage space to hold those things without it being and looking too bulky.

I also love the large inside pocket, the eyeglass cleaner thatā€™s attached to the inside pocket, and the attached pen.

What donā€™t you like about the sweatshirt?

The pockets which you can slip your hands in to keep warm donā€™t zip up. I have a tendency to put my purse in those pockets in any jacket so to know that anything that I put in the pocket could be zipped up safely would be great.

Also those hand warming pockets (as I call them) are not very deep so putting anything in there without the zip can easily fall out.

I also donā€™t like how heavy the jacket is . Iā€™d much prefer a lighter jacket . In winter itā€™s a great jacket to keep me warm and toasty, but I feel that I heat up too quickly wearing this jacket.

Has the BauBax sweatshirt made it easier for you to travel with carry-on only?

Not overly easier . Although it does have a lot of pockets, because I consider this particular model that I have too heavy, I tend not to travel with it much.

Itā€™s convenient to have but I guess the bulkiness and the fact that I overheat in it makes it less likely for me to want to travel with it. Maybe I should have purchased the one of the other jackets.

However both my husband and teenage son love their BauBax jackets and wear them in just daily life and especially for travel.

  • Check out these items to pack that solve problems .

Would you recommend this jacket to other female travelers?

Probably not the particular model I have for travel, because as I mentioned before itā€™s too heavy and bulky for my liking (Iā€™m only 4ā€² 11ā€²).

I donā€™t use the blow-up neck pillow at all and have never traveled with it (again itā€™s too heavy, my family feel the same about the neck pillow). If they made a lighter version like ScottEVest do, with zip-up hand pockets I would buy one. I only ever wear mine when itā€™s cold at home, but not for travel.

BauBax Bomber and Sweatshirt

Natalie owns both the bomber and the sweatshirt, so she answered my questions with both items in mind.

BauBax travel bomber jacket review

What do you like about the BauBax bomber and sweatshirt?

I love all the pockets in these jackets.

I also really love the built-in eye mask on the first edition jackets. My bomber was ordered through Kickstarter so it has the original eye mask, and it is fabulous for sleeping on flights. The pillow is super cozy as well.

The bomber is very warm, I was able to wear it as my primary coat in Iceland on a snowy December day. The bomber also seems to be water-resistant in the torso area, but not on the arms .

I love the stretch and flexibility of the sweatshirt . I wear it all the time, even when Iā€™m not traveling.

What donā€™t you like about the bomber and sweatshirt?

The bomber jacket is very stiff , so I can see how itā€™d be uncomfortable for some to wear on a long flight or trip.

I ordered the sweatshirt through BauBax after the Kickstarter ended so it may be a second or third edition of the jacket.

It doesnā€™t have the same eye mask as my bomber jacket and I actually really hate it. The mask isnā€™t fully connected to the hood of the jacket like in the first edition jackets so itā€™s really just like a random small flap. It barely covers the eyes all the way and lets in a bunch of light.

  • See what to pack to help you sleep on planes .

I like the pen/stylus, but I am super paranoid about losing it, so I detach it from the zipper and just leave it in whatever purse Iā€™m traveling with at the time.

Have the BauBax jackets made it easier for you to travel with carry-on only?

Yes, it has made it easier to travel carry on only .

In addition to doing carry on only, I also only travel with a small crossbody bag , so I have even less room for in-flight essentials .

Iā€™ve never had to worry about being able to access all my essentials while traveling with this jacket. I also never feel bogged down when Iā€™m using this jacket.

Some of the features like the can holder pocket I donā€™t use in that particular way mostly because I think itā€™s a bit silly to walk/sit around with an open can in your breast pocket. Maybe thatā€™s just me.

Would you recommend BauBax to other female travelers?

I would recommend this jacket to other female travelers. Itā€™s a sturdy, well-made jacket , and even if you donā€™t use all the features, itā€™s nice looking and comfortable. My bomber jacket worked as a coat in Iceland and London in December weather and was nice enough for me to wear to the theater in London on multiple occasions.

Fun Fact: Who is BauBax?

Bau and Bax are the pet names company founders Hiral and Yoganshi Shah call each other.

In the course of their relationship, they had to endure frequent uncomfortable travel to see each other.

Thatā€™s why they set out to create ways to make travel easier starting with a functional yet stylish travel jacket.

Interesting… I had the Baubax Bomber from the Kickstarter campaign, and I ended up selling it on Ebay. I agree with the assessment that it was stiff and I was also terrified I’d lose the stylus, but I didn’t think it was warm at all! I wore it in March in Rhode Island, which is a similar climate to London, and I was miserable. It didn’t keep out the damp at all. Because it was so stiff, and ran so small, I barely used any of the lovely pockets. Overall, I was super disappointed, and don’t miss it.

I would not recommend thebomber nor the sweatshirt. I have both in a size S (even though I usually wear size XS) and yes, I love the amount of pockets, but both are heavy and do not live up to the promised expectations. the most dissapointing things: The pocket for an ipad is just big enough for an ipad mini, the pocket for eyeglasses arenā€™t big enough to hold even tiny eyeglasses, the drinkpocket doesnā€™t even hold a miniature drink and if you wear the jacket closed, you sure take out the blanket to make it possible. I removed the neck pillow cause it irritated my neck during wear as well. So…. it doesnā€™t live up to the promised expectations. Itā€™s just a stiff heavy coat with many pockets.

I purchased the Baubax Sweatshirt last year and I absolutely love it! It’s really comfortable and I wear it every time I take a flight.

I looked at all the reviews before I purchased and I’m glad I did. I bought a size up and turned out to fit me perfectly and still had space for my passport, wallet, phone, earphones, wireless charger, etc.

I love it because I don’t have to worry about opening my bag each time I need something. So, instead of having a carry-on and my handbag, I now have one carry-on šŸ™‚

Mosko Moto Basilisk Adventure Suit

Now, several years later, they finally have something to show for their efforts, and they are rightfully excited. I was eager to get my hands on the new Basilisk Jacket & Pants combo to see what the first offering from this young company would look like and to find out how it would stack up against offerings from established competitors.

First Impressions

As soon as I opened the box containing the Basilisk Jacket & pants I knew that it was a different breed from the riding gear I was accustomed to. The jacket came with a custom hanger, and it was packaged in an actual garment bag emblazon with the Mosko Moto logo. The finish of the suit reminded me of a high-end mountaineering piece with all of the minute attention to detail Iā€™ve come to expect from this brand. The bodies of both garments are comprised of a waterproof/breathable fabric called eVent Expedition with SuperFabric abrasion-resistant overlays in impact zones, laced together with YKK Vislon zippers.

Mosko Moto Basilisk review

Features that I’d never seen on any motorcycle garments included a ā€œ Dirt Skirt ā€ which was obviously inspired by a powder skirt in a snow sport jacket, hook & loop adjustments in the love handle region of the jacket to account for layering up/down, and built-in extensions on the pant legs that when unzipped add an additional two inches of length ( not that I needed it ). Other uncommon but useful features came in the form of a thick leather belt, adjustable closure at the waist with clasps instead of a button or snaps, and quick release cinch strap adjustment at the hem & collar.

To understand The Basilisk, you need to realize that it is a system, not an ordinary riding jacket or pants. Both top and bottom were designed to be worn over independent body armor – the kind typically used by enduro riders. This is Moskoā€™s solution to altogether remove integrated armor that doesnā€™t always stay in place when you fall.

Mosko Moto Basilisk Jacket collar

The recipe starts with a base layer of your choosing, and then you add body armor in whatever flavor or quantity you prefer, a jersey goes on the torso with the option of a mid-layer, and finally the Basilisk Jacket & Pants complete the dish.

The advantage of this method is adaptability; being able to fine-tune your temperature with several stages of layering. To begin with, the Basilisk Jacket has six large mesh-lined vents along the chest, shoulders and back that move significant air ( excluding the forearms ). The pants include six direct vents as well, with the inclusion of big thigh vents, exhaust vents that extend from the waist to the knee, and ingenious inside knee vents that did a great job of cooling armor-clad legs.

Venting scheme on the Mosko Moto Basilisk Pant.

Then, of course, when things heat up considerably or get strenuous off-road, you can lose the jacket altogether and ride with just an armored jersey. Since the jacket isn’t as bulky as most moto jackets, it stores easily in the top of a pannier or under the beavertail of Mosko Moto bags. As a whole, the design is clean with no fat on the bone and functionality put front & center.

How They Performed

While testing the Basilisk in the famously unpredictable weather of the Pacific Northwest, conditions did not disappoint. On any given day it wasnā€™t uncommon to start riding in the morning with temperatures hovering in the 40ā€™s, cresting 80 degrees in the mid-afternoon with a possible mercury landslide and ensuing deluge, before finally sinking into the 50ā€™s by the evening. This was the perfect environment for this suit, and it shined with every swing of the weather pendulum.

Testing the Mosko Moto Basilisk suit in the PNW.

With all the vents open, top & bottom, airflow was substantial and enough to keep comfortable in the heat as long as you were in motion. But I did notice that there was no feature to secure the jacket collar open for airflow to the neck, and no venting on the forearms.  Although, whenever the surface wasn’t paved and the temps were warm, the jacket was coming off to enjoy uninhibited airflow.

Conversely, if temperatures were cooler, partially or fully closing all vents worked sufficiently for stopping airflow until I would finally add a mid-layer to maintain comfort.  When things got cold, wet, & windy ( And they certainly did!), the fully seam-sealed eVent Expedition material performed as advertised maintaining watertight integrity.

Tidy up your love handles with the large Velcro strap on the Mosko Moto Basilisk jacket.

Mosko Moto claims that the Basilisk is the only air-permeable waterproof motorcycle jacket on the market.Without trying to substantiate or discredit those claims, I can only comment that the climate inside the jacket never felt clammy when exposed to internal ( sweat ) or external ( precipitation ).

I imagine designing these pieces around an entire range of armor was a living nightmare -, taking that into consideration the fit is good. They addressed a wide range of fitment with hook & loop adjustments at the sides, length extensions on the legs and large openings at the ankle with adjustable hook & loop ( aka Velcro ) closures. At 5ā€™ 10ā€™ā€™ with a 32ā€ waist & 30ā€ inseam and athletic build both pieces fit better than they rightfully should, partially because I donā€™t have to contend with floating armor.

Mosko Moto Basilisk pants included belt.

The Basilisk pants are long on me even by moto standards, but with the combination of their deep crotch and practical leather belt, the fit was great compared to most other over the boot pants Iā€™ve tested. The jacket is made for bulky armor and a wide spectrum of layering, but with the love handle adjustments and hem cinches, it felt like I could achieve a custom fit no matter what I was wearing underneath. Both jacket and pant have ample space for activities and unobstructed range of motion that never impeded my riding.

When it came time for crash testing, I didnā€™t have to wait long (regularly pushing the limits on KTMā€™s new 790 Adventure R, I often come up short on talent and pay the price). The front end came out from under me in a gravel corner traveling at approximately 35mph and I proceeded to use my elbow as an anchor while the bike spun 180 degrees with me in tow. After I stood up and the dust cleared, I was amazed that I hadn’t put a hole  in any area of the jacket and pants I slid on. The same thing happened after going over the handlebars in a silty rain rut. That time I landed in rocks but still no significant signs of wear. Both times my Leatt body armor did precisely what it was supposed to, exactly where it was supposed to, which might not have been the case with floating armor.

Velcro cuff on the Mosko Moto Basilisk Jacket.

After logging 3,000 miles in a short period while testing this suit, it greatly exceeded my expectations. Mosko did a great job with their initial apparel offering and the promise shown here in version 1.0 has us excited for what could be coming in the future.

Who Are They For?

The Basilisk is truly an enduro TOURING setup, perfect for dedicated rides but maybe not the best solution for commuting or mobbing around town. Most riders would likely prefer to throw on a jacket with baked in armor on a day-to-day basis instead of taking the extra steps of armoring up with a jersey just for a quick trip to the grocery store. Enduro-style armor also isnā€™t the most comfortable to wear for long-range travel on the highway.

Mosko Moto Basilisk review

If that’s not the riding you do, as in my case, then this could be an ideal system. For more aggressive riders, the benefits of The Basilisk are significant: always knowing that your armor will be right where itā€™s supposed to be in the event of a get-off and being able to better regulate the temperature in ever-changing conditions. For the adventure rider that spends a lot of time in challenging terrain, and is privy to a wide spectrum of weather & temperatures, this setup is ideal.

Our Verdict

Itā€™s hard not to be impressed by this initial apparel offering by Mosko Moto. They approach everything from an outsider’s angle and are willing to take risks with an unapologetic attitude that allows them to develop products that are often ahead of the curve. This isnā€™t just another jacket and pants, itā€™s a new way of thinking.

Mosko moto adventure suit.

While some might consider the $1,100 price tag a bit steep for an Enduro Jacket and Pants, you have to consider the premium abrasion protection the Basilisk suit includes that you don’t normally find in enduro gear. In fact, enduro gear typically doesn’t include any kind of abrasion protection that will protect you in a high-speed slide on the street. Some may also be skeptical about paying this much for a waterproof suit that doesn’t carry the Gore-Tex brand, but there are other high-performance waterproof materials out there that don’t get the same attention. Mosko Moto’s new take on venting and fit adjustment is also very effective at optimizing comfort.

The Basiliskā€™s value lies in its versatility and simplicity. Riding gear is like motorcycle selection in that you canā€™t possibly be perfectly comfortable in every scenario, but The Basilisk is just about as close as it comes to being a universal fit.

What We Liked

  • The versatility of being able to regulate body temperature in a wide range of conditions.
  • Simplistic styling reminiscent of a high-end mountaineering garment.
  • Use of robust products like YKK Vislon zippers, SuperFabric panels, and eVent material.

What Could Be Improved?

  • Lower arm venting would complete the airflow on the jacket.
  • A fit adjustment feature that would allow you to reduce some of the bagginess in the arms.
  • Pant legs run a little long even when leg extensions are not used.
  • Some way of securing the collar open would aid in airflow to the neck and chest.

I bought the jacket early in June after trying it on at a rally. I tend to buy pants in ‘short’ sizes, though, and as such, the pants were WAY too long for me, so I didn’t buy them along with the jacket.

You’re review is dead on on the following: – As a jacket for use while on the bike for a day it’s great, but as mentioned, the ‘layered’ system isn’t quite ideal for use around town or on a day-to-day basis. Not sure how well it’s going to work once I have to add a thermal layer back in over/under the armor. I’m back to looking at jackets w/ integrated armor for day-to-day use. – Also as mentioned, arm venting could’ve been a bit better. It’s still a bit stuffy once you get into the high 80s. When I got caught in the rain, I did have a little water work it’s way into the arm vents… not sure if I just didn’t have them fully closed, but I don’t think they’re waterproof like the other zippers. – The collar is one of my peeves as well. It it was a bit higher, I think it could be folded down easier in warmer conditions, then flipped up and tightened in cooler / wetter weather.

NOMAX TANK BAG

Inspired by the hydration packs we use for backcountry skiing and mountain biking, the Nomax comes with a 2L hydration reservoir and tons of storage for all those little things you want to organize and access quickly.

Nomax Tank Bag (V3.0)

Mosko Moto Tank Bag Onyx/Orange - Preorder / NONE Nomax Tank Bag (V3.0)

Our Nomax Tank Bag gets major design updates for V3.0, including an additional expansion zipper, adding 2.5 liters of optional volume, upgraded backpack straps, an InReach pocket, and a lighter weight, recycled 630D material.

Inspired by the hydration packs we use for backcountry skiing and mountain biking, the Nomax comes with a 2L hydration reservoir, a stashable rain cover, and tons of storage for all those little things youĀ  want to organize and access quickly . To top it off, the bag unclips from the bike quickly and transforms into a fully functional backpack for off-bike missions.

Updates to Version 3.0

  • Expansion zipper ā€“ adding 2.5 liters of optional volume
  • Lighter weight, recycled 630D material
  • Upgraded backpack straps
  • InReach pocket

After talking to hundreds of riders around the world, and combining their feedback with our personal wants and needs, we decided to design the Nomax's storage space differently than the traditional 'toaster' shape. Instead, we divided the space into six vertical layers, each with a specific purpose. We conducted research on the types of items that riders typically store in their tank bags and discovered that most of them were small. By using a vertical layout, we were able to maximize the use of space without increasing the height of the bag.

The top layer of the Nomax has three columns of MOLLE webbing made from die-cut Hypalon. These columns can be used to mount various items such as our rain-proof MOLLE Map Pocket, Navigator Cell Phone Pocket, or MOLLE-compatible multi-tool. You can customize the top layer of the Nomax to suit your individual travel needs with the help of MOLLE webbing.

Beneath the MOLLE webbing, the next layer is an expandable beavertail. The beavertail can be used to quickly store things like sunglasses, gloves, snacks, or even a small DSLR camera. If you decide to use it for your DSLR, we've placed webbing loops on the beavertail side bellows, allowing you to directly clip the D-rings on your camera case to the bag. Inside the beavertail, we've also included a pocket for an InReach or SPOT, and a gated clip to keep your GPS/camera/beacon lanyards secure, so nothing falls out if your bike takes a tumble.

The third layer zips back into your lap and is specifically designed to help you organize small items like charging cables, pens, change, batteries, earplugs, chapstick, passport, and bike documents. This layer includes six mesh pockets, three elastic cable holders, two pen holders, and a fleece-lined glasses pocket to keep everything in its place. No more tangled mess of miscellaneous items floating around in the bottom of your tank bag - now everything has a designated home.

The fourth layer is a large open compartment featuring plenty of space for bulkier items like spare gloves, wallet, CCW, and food. There are two large mesh pockets (one with sidewalls and one flat), which are available if you need them but compress out of the way if you don't. Also, for contact lens wearers, on the foam-reinforced sidewall, there's a removable lens case holder, which can be rotated to keep the cases vertical depending on the orientation of the bag.

Under the main compartment, is a long, flat pocket designed to hold a 2.5L hydration reservoir, which comes included with the Nomax. If you're traveling in a warmer climate or on a long-distance trip, you can move the weight of your drinking water from your back to the bike to help you stay hydrated without adding extra weight to your backpack. If you'd rather keep the Nomax as tight as possible to the bike or maximize space in the main compartment, you can remove the reservoir and store it elsewhere on the bike.

The sixth and final layer of the Nomax houses a quick-stash spot for two sewn-on, crushable backpack straps. Simply unclip the Nomax from the bike, pull out the backpack straps, and clip them to the D-rings at the bottom of the bag. The Nomax converts into a fully functioning hydration pack. The side straps, which normally connect the Nomax to the bike, now become your waist strap. We use these backpack straps on dual sport trips all the time, from morning hikes to running errands in town. It looks, feels, and functions like a normal backpack.

The Nomax includes a waterproof rain cover, with a welded-seam top panel and sealed seams on the side to keep your belongings dry in a heavy downpour. There's a stash spot for the rain cover on the top of the bag and a leash so it doesn't get lost. Also, hidden away in two of the zipper pulls, youā€™ll find a SIM card tool, a storage compartment, and a safety whistle for emergencies.

  • 2.0L Hydration reservoir w/ insulated hose
  • Beavertail stash spot
  • Easy on/off with the standard Mosko tank bag harness
  • 6 layers of vertical organization (features hidden inside!)
  • MOLLE expandability
  • External beacon pocket (inReach or Spot)
  • HHMS (hydration hose mgmt. system)
  • Fleece lined sunglasses pocket
  • Cable pass-through port (charging!)
  • D-rings for connecting backpack straps
  • Nomax Tank Bag
  • 2.0L Hydrapak reservoir
  • Easy on/off mounting harness
  • Two lower connection straps for mounting
  • Stashable, rain-proof cover
  • Four heavy-duty cable ties with metal closure for mounting
  • The Nomax expands & contracts as needed. If you prefer a tight-fitting tank bag with a low profile, remove the hydration reservoir and map pocket and cinch it down tight to the bike.
  • For more capacity, take full advantage of the beavertail.
  • View Installation Instructions PDF
  • View Nomax Footprint PDF
  • Due to the Nomax's long torso, it may not fit on smaller dual sport bikes.
  • We recommend rigging the Nomax as far forward as possible ā€“ it's not uncommon for the top of the bag to extend over the handlebars on some bikes.
  • Our universal mounting harness makes it easy to swap between other Mosko tank bags and is also interchangeable between bikes.

Customer Reviews

This bag is fantastic! While it looks huge on my bike (Honda CB500X) it does not get in the way of my bars or my seating position at all; I donā€™t even notice it being there while riding! It is a super easy transition to using the backpack straps; which is ideal when stopping to eat or when we get where we are going. There was plenty of room for my essentials when the bladder was completely fullā€¦ to be honest, almost a little too much room (I have an overpacking issue!) and I had to be careful to not just keep packing more and more stuff in there!!! So happy I chose the Nomax instead of the Gnome!!
