Country music icon Willie Nelson is honoring his Texas roots and celebrating a major milestone with a free concert in Austin, Texas, and fans are invited to witness the historic performance.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of “Austin City Limits,” the longest-running music series in television history, Nelson will be playing a Texas-sized outdoor concert at the Long Center, 701 W. Riverside Drive, in Austin, Texas, on Thursday, Oct. 17. Better yet, this event is free and open to the public with one simple requirement for entry.

Those hoping to attend the major milestone event must register with Fair AXS by 10 p.m. CDT on Monday, Sept. 23. Two tickets can be requested per registrant. Fans will be notified if they won tickets to ACL’s anniversary bash featuring Nelson between Thursday, Sept. 26, and Friday, Sept. 27. Tickets are nontransferable.

The date of Nelson’s forthcoming show in Austin marks 50 years to the day that the “Always on My Mind” singer first took the stage for the pilot episode of “Austin City Limits.” This episode was filmed Oct. 17, 1974, at Studio 6A on the University of Texas at Austin’s campus. “Austin City Limits” is now filmed at its studio home of ACL Live at The Moody Theater.

“There would be no Austin City Limits without Willie Nelson — simple as that,” said longtime ACL executive producer Terry Lickona in a news release.

Joining Nelson at ACL’s golden anniversary bash will be Austin’s very own western swing band Asleep at the Wheel, who appeared on the first official episode of the show’s first season.

The live concert event will be taped and highlights will air as an hourlong “Austin City Limits” special in early 2025.

Willie Nelson’s history with ‘Austin City Limits’

Nelson has made 18 appearances on “Austin City Limits,” which is more than any other performer in the show’s history. The musician also served as the very first inductee into the ACL Hall of Fame in 2014. Legendary country music artist Garth Brooks was recently inducted into ACL’s Hall of Fame on Sept. 5, highlighting the notable acts who have graced the stage throughout the show’s 50 years on the air.

The 50th season of “Austin City Limits” will premiere Sept. 28, and the episode will feature Golden, Texas, native Kacey Musgraves. Season 50 will include appearances by Jelly Roll, Gracie Abrams and more.

Though Nelson was dealing with health-related issues over the summer, causing him to cancel several Outlaw Music Festival appearances in June, Nelson made his grand return to the stage for his Fourth of July Picnic in Camden, New Jersey.

Willie Nelson to Play Austin City Limits’ 50th Anniversary Concert

The post Willie Nelson to Play Austin City Limits’ 50th Anniversary Concert appeared first on Consequence .

Back in October 1974, Willie Nelson helped break music television ground by performing on the very first episode of Austin City Limits . Now, the iconic country star is set to headline a free concert celebrating the show’s 50th anniversary.

Booked for October 17th at The Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin, Texas — exactly 50 years to the day from Nelson’s inaugural taping for the show — the Austin City Limits 50th Birthday Bash will be a completely free show featuring performances by Nelson and the Austin-based western swing band, Asleep at the Wheel. The concert will be taped and highlights from it will air on PBS early next year.

Get Willie Nelson Tickets Here

Entry to the event will be free, but it won’t be entirely open to the public — rather, those wishing to attend will be required to register for a chance to win tickets. Registration opened on Friday, September 20th, and will run through Monday, September 23rd, at 10:00 p.m. CT. Fans who are selected for tickets will then be notified between September 26th and 27th. Register for tickets here.

All this comes as Austin City Limits is gearing up for a star-studded 50th season. Beyond the birthday bash, the half-centennial celebrations include an event honoring Garth Brooks (taped earlier this month), and a primetime special, ACL Celebrates 50 Years , featuring a stacked lineup of performers from the show’s history, set to premiere sometime in 2025.

Beyond that, Austin City Limits has announced the lineup for the first half of the upcoming season, which will include episodes featuring Gracie Abrams, Jacob Collier, Brittany Howard, Jelly Roll, Chris Stapleton, and more. The first episode, featuring Kacey Musgraves, will air on September 28th.

Meanwhile, the 2024 iteration of Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival just came to a close, but he still has a few dates coming up in Texas this fall (get tickets here). Earlier this week, he released a tear-jerking cover of The Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize??” , taken from his upcoming studio album, Last Leaf on the Tree .

Luck, Texas (Willie Nelson Ranch) (Google Maps)

American musician and activist Willie Nelson’s house is on a 500-acre ranch in Spicewood, TX known as “Luck, Texas”. Originally built in 1985 as the set for the film version of Nelson’s concept album “Red Headed Stranger”, Luck features a recreation of an Old West town. Nelson was so fond of the set, that he wanted it preserved and built his own home up the road on the property. Nelson also owns a home in Maui, Hawaii. Over the years, Nelson primarily used the Luck, Texas town as a hangout spot to play cards and music with his family and friends. Though the old-fashioned atmosphere was the draw of the locale, poker tables, an equipped bar, and a makeshift boxing gym rounded out the amenities of the site. In 2012, an annual music festival called Luck Reunion began and is held at the ranch on the location of the “Red Headed Stranger” set. In 2020, Nelson and Luck Ranch began a partnership with TerraPurezza, a business and educational outlet that focuses on regenerative agriculture and sustainability. Willie Nelson’s net worth is $25 million. Though he is known best as a singer and songwriter, he has appeared in many television programs and films and has written nine books. Due to poor investments in the 1980s, Nelson owed $32 million dollars in back taxes to the IRS in 1990. Nelson has been arrested several times for possession of marijuana and hallucinogenic mushrooms, and was banned from the Bahamas for marijuana possession in 1977. Willie Nelson has been married four times and has seven children. He shares two children with his current wife, Annie D’Angelo, whom he married in 1991.

The concert was pure Heaven! Willie was absolutely amazing! He walked right out, picked up Trigger and he did not stop! It was one classic memory after another! His son Micah stood to his right, there was a bass player, a snare drummer and a guy that played the harmonica, together they played flawlessly! The sound was magical ! I was worried the quality of Willie’s music would have been less than standard because of his age....but he left me wanting nothing! When he played Trigger, his fingers floated across the strings and could be described as nothing but pure perfection. I must say that hearing children laugh, waves on the beach and Willie play his guitar are my top three favorite sounds to hear. Last night was a dream come true. I will cherish this memory for the rest of my life. I smiled through the entire concert, and honestly, I am smiling now. Thank you Willie Nelson!

Now, the opening act was a lady named Cassidy Daniels and she was a doll! Her sound is an updated Janis Joplin, and I totally want to hear more from her!

Seeing Willie Nelson was A big check off of my bucket list! Getting to hear Cassidy Daniels for the first time was icing on my cupcake!

Most in our group had a great time last night at Willie Nelson and Family, with opener Tennessee Jet. I say “most”, because others were less able to ignore a growing trend: people spending more time documenting their time at a show than actually being in the moment enjoying the show. This is not limited to the occasional snap of a pic, but taking group pictures with their backs to the stage, selecting the perfect shot, posting it to social media and discussing the responses. STOP IT PEOPLE!

Now for the show. Willie was, well, Willie. Yes he’s in his eighties, and no longer possesses the vocal range of his youth, but he has found new ways to express the soul of the words that if anything, allow one to rethink a tune they’ve long since committed to soulless, rote memory. And his guitar playing? Masterful, and still so uniquely his. If Id been led blindfolded into the venue, I would have known at the strum of the first cord who I was hearing. The band, friends and family, complemented him perfectly, neither overstepping nor understating the partnerships.

Some complained the show was short and there was no encore, but I think if they review the setlist, they’ll note there were many tunes; there was just not any meaningless banter and the whole encore routine is kinda tired anyway.

To those signed up to see a show to come. You'll have a great time, if you limit your in-show screen time.

Arrived in South Carolina to the arena to a sign saying the show was cancelled. I called the ticket vender to ask about the tickets. They said the could not confirm that the show was cancelled at that would attempt to find ot in 72 hours and the "might" email me.

So I can't review the show. I may have to litigate. They said they may not be able to refund. So I may make a criminal complaint. Or more simply..

Got my lawyers number saved in my phone.

Why would Willie Nelson take his Fourth of July Picnic to New Jersey? An expert weighs in

In 2007, Willie Nelson announced his Picnic was going to be held in Washington State, at the Gorge Amphitheatre – about 1,500 miles from the Texas border. The uproar was immediate.

"The first time ever outside of Texas!" publications breathlessly reported. The poster and the Picnic's advertising even proclaimed as much.

“Calm down,” Texas Monthly told us Texans. “It's  not  the first one outside Texas.” The 1983 Picnic, Texas Monthly said, was held in New Jersey.

Well, here we are again.

It was announced on Tuesday that this year's Fourth Of July Picnic – a somewhat-annual tradition dating back a half-century – was going to be held in Philadelphia . Or, technically, at the Freedom Mortgage Pavilion in Camden, New Jersey.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

Texans are aghast all over again. But for a bunch who still remember the Alamo, Texans can have selectively short memories. Let’s take it from the top.

What is the Willie Nelson Fourth of July Picnic?

In 1973, Willie Nelson – inspired by the failed 1972 Dripping Springs Reunion – decided to hold his own music festival. He held the first Picnic at the same ranch outside Dripping Springs and despite no small measure of chaos, somehow put together a legendary event. It was huge in the 1970s – up to 80,000 attended the 1976 Picnic in Gonzales. It shrank after that, but never went away. At least not for more than a couple years at a time.

Isn’t it always in the Austin area?

If you’re new to Austin, you might think so. It was held at the Circuit of the Americas racetrack east of town for five years from 2015 through 2019. Then after a COVID virtual Picnic and a year off, it was held at the Q2 soccer stadium the last couple years. But the fact is, it has been all over Texas including College Station in 1974, a five-year stretch in Luckenbach from 1995-1999 and seven years in Fort Worth.

But at least it’s always in Texas, right?

Not so. What Texas Monthly didn’t tell us in 2007 was that the first Picnic outside of Texas was in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1977. In 1978, there were three Picnics between July 1 and July 4th, including one in Kansas City with the Grateful Dead. And 1983? That year also featured a trio of Picnics: In Syracuse on July 2, at Giants Stadium in New Jersey on July 3 and in Atlanta on July 4th. In 2009, Willie was on a ballpark tour with Bob Dylan and John Mellencamp and the July 4th show was in South Bend, Indiana. Dylan gave Willie the closing spot and they advertised it as a Picnic.

Why do they say it’s in Philadelphia when the actual show is in Camden, New Jersey?

I can’t help you here. Everything I know about Philadelphia I could write on my forehead in crayon, so I'm not sure how Camden counts as Philadelphia.

Why are you not surprised by this?

This was pretty predictable. When Willie released the schedule for the Outlaw Music Festival a few weeks ago, there was a "Picnic gap" in the performances — but not much of one. The tour had dates in Mansfield, Massachusetts, on July 2 and Bethel, New York, on July 6. Yes, a 91-year-old Willie could have hopped on a plane, flown to Texas with his aging crew, done a traditional Texas Picnic and flown back, but that was never likely.

Bob Dylan at a Picnic? Is that weird?

Actually, not so much. In addition to the 2009 pseudo-Picnic, Dylan performed at the Picnic in Fort Worth in 2005. It was a really weird moment watching Billy Joe Shaver and Dylan perform back-to-back – two great songwriters from opposite sides of the universe. And the rumor that Bob Dylan was going to perform at the inaugural 1973 Picnic helped fuel hype about that show.

Is this a real Picnic?

That’s up to you to decide. For years, the Picnic was defined by the crew of “regulars” that often joined the event: Ray Price, Johnny Bush, Leon Russell, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Billy Joe Shaver, David Allan Coe, Asleep at the Wheel, the Geezinslaws … the list goes on. Some appeared more frequently than others, but the Picnic was essentially an annual reunion of Willie and his closest friends. The problem, you see, is that Willie has outlived most of them. Willie’s children and his new friends have helped fill that void and the Picnic continues, though this year, like 2007 and 2009, it doesn’t feature  any  of Willie’s surviving Texas buddies. One thing for sure, is that it might yet return to Texas next year. Just as it has over the decades.

Really? At 92 years old?

Yep. With Willie, it’s never over until it’s over.

Dave Dalton Thomas has researched the Picnic for more than 20 years. His book, “Picnic: Willie Nelson’s Fourth of July Tradition,” will be released April 15 by Texas A&M University Press. Preview the book and see book signing dates at  davetexas.com
