Snow Patrol are a rock band hailing from Dundee, Scotland who formed in 1994. Since debuting, they have become one of the most commercially successful rock bands of their generation, famed for their iconic anthems “Chasing Cars” and “Run”, along with their six hit studio albums.

Some bands are just lucky. There are those that score a record deal the week after they form and go straight to the top of the charts before they've played their tenth gig, but they're usually flash in the pan novelty acts who find themselves out of date as quickly as they found success. It's safe to say that Snow Patrol, who toiled for a decade in obscurity before they hit the big-time, are not one of those bands. Forming as Shrug while singer and guitarist Gary Lightbody, bassist Mark Mclelland and drummer Michael Morrison were all studying together at the University of Dundee, Snow Patrol began life as just another student-led indie band. They played gigs in pubs to very few people and releasing EP's that very few people ever bought, and it took them three years to sign to their first label. Their first album “Songs For Polarbears” was released in 1998 and after all that effort, the album tanked, though the critical notices it received were unanimously positive.

This was the also the case with their second album 2001's “When It's All Over You Still Have To Clean Up” which lead to the band being dropped by their record label. A hellish period of time followed, in which the band were playing gigs to less people than they played to when they formed. It's quite safe to say that what followed is one of the most inspiring come-backs in British rock history, and it's all down to a song that, at the time of its release, was already around four years old. While the band had struggled along, Richard Smerniki, a fan of the band who had gone to university with its members had gone on to become Polydor Records' Scottish A&R rep, and his brother Paul had gone on to manage Fiction Records. Once they became aware of the band's label situation, they sent some talent scouts over to the band's Glasgow headquarters to listen to some of their demos, and they were impressed enough to sign the band to Black Lion, a subsidiary of Polydor Records.

In 2003, their album “Final Straw” was released, and after its initial release proved to be a modest word of mouth success, the release of its second single, “Run”, shot the band into the stratosphere. A top five hit on the singles chart, it propelled the album into the upper regions of the charts, peaking at number three, and set up the band as one of the hottest rock bands in the country, nearly a decade into their career. Three further hit singles from the album, along with a stint supporting U2 on their wildly successful Vertigo Tour cemented their position as the next big thing in British rock. It would take them ten years to conquer their home country, but it would only take them a further three to make them one of the biggest bands in the world thanks to their timeless hjt single “Chasing Cars”. Needless to say, the band were still an enormous deal back home, and its parent album “Eyes Open” became the biggest selling album of the year in the U.K to show that, beating out stiff competition from Arctic Monkeys and Take That in the process.

To this day, Snow Patrol remain one of the world's most beloved rock bands. They've headlined festivals, sold out arenas, supported the world's biggest bands and seem set for stadium slaying dominance in the very near future. Over twenty years into their career, they're still at the very top of their game, and they come highly recommended.

Live reviews

What I can say about a Snow Patrol gig is that possibly the songs may be what you would expect, but the rapport with the crowd, the humour and the odd little mistake like Gary forgetting the lyrics, means that it is never truly predictable and certainly far from the band merely going through the motions.

The band exude a warmth which is projected to the audience and reciprocated. The songs are melodic, some anthemic and like "Run" (the song which first attracted me to their music), certainly get the crowd singing along.

The first time I saw them perform in the courtyard at Somerset House back in August 2004; not only was their set electrifying but so was the sky as a storm was brewing. Their secret gig at the Royal Opera House was memorable and I have followed their career and seen them progress from smaller venues like Rock City, Nottingham to the O2 Arena, London, Royal Albert Hall and headline at the V Festival.

Gary's amazing voice combined with the excellent musicians in the band, the humour and light show all add up to a great evening which stays with you for a long time afterwards.

Snow Patrol are simply breath-taking live. The Northern Irish indie band have enjoyed great success following their hit single ‘Chasing Cars’, a success that has failed to die out as the band continue to produce new music and explore their sound further. Although ‘Chasing Cars’ is arguably their most successful hit, and was, predictably, the crux of their live show, the have an incredible array of singles that are all as equally brilliant as the last. There wasn’t a single song on their set list that failed to move the crowd in some way: each song either had the crowd singing along, swaying with passion or crying with silent appreciation. Single ‘Run’ was a real tear jerker, and not a soul moved or even coughed during the song, as if afraid to break the spell cast by Gary’s incredible vocals. The band were phenomenal at capturing the crowd, and were all brilliant musicians live. They sounded exactly the same live as they did recorded. The band closed with ‘Just Say Yes’, a brilliant end to a fantastic night.

For a moment in the mid-00s following on from the indie explosion, Northern Irish alternative rock ensemble Snow Patrol were perhaps the biggest band in the UK following on from the runaway success of unassuming single 'Chasing Cars'. They have not managed to recreate that quiet triumph since but the group has been consistently releasing music and the tours are growing in stature and production values.

'Chasing Cars' is not an anomaly, Snow Patrol's discography is laced with momentous cinematic downtempo prog rock and these really shine when opened up and showcased on stage. The fragility of 'You're All I Have' is very evident when performed in front of thousands whilst 'Signal Fire' seems even more brooding when you watch all the instrumentals coming together. 'Run' is a real highlight as the whole crowd become involved in a mass singalong to this joyless anthem and lift the rafters with their voices. 'Just Say Yes' ends things on a more positive notes and the band leave to deserved rounds of applause.

As a big fan of Snow Patrol and a person thats been to many of their gigs...probably all of them that have been in 02 over the years..then this was another superb gig. But Ive been to other venues too. because its a recent gig then my memory suggests it was a good night....but Snow patrol are one of my most favourite live gigs...and yet this wasnt one of my top 3 greatest gigs. The greatest gig Ive ever been to was a Snow patrol gig, but in the Royal Albert hall! having said that Snow Patrol are just one of the best live bands in the world....yes Im biased.....but the couple next to me..from germany seemed to agree with that belief. As ever they are just brilliant ...with songs from a wide repertoire that cover simple ballads to powerful rock renditions...that capture emotions. Talented and emotional songs that warm the soul with great performance and star quality.....class quality act at its best.....enjoy them and even if you dont enjoy their catalogue..you have to admit they are a great performance act.

Saw them 6 years ago and loved them then but Thursday nights show was even better in my opinion!

Gary bought us all to our feet like a magician almost from the word go and none of us sat down or wanted to for the rest of the show.

He literally had us all in the palm of his hand with his wonderful self deprecating humour and comedic timing....

But of course we all were there for the music and they never let us down.

The new album is brilliant and there was so many highlights for me I can barely list them.

I think the first track, Life on Earth, of the new album is the best song he has ever written… I play it over and over again and know it will be one of my all time favourites.

I am so rapt that they are coming back next year I will certainly be seeing them and hopefully even closer to the stage next time!

Snow Patrol is back and I’m particularly happy for Gary... he’s been through a lot.

A freezing cold day in Leeds turned in to a red hot night at the Arena. 2 supports - Roe a very talented young lady and Kodaline (who thought the crowd were a bit subdued!)

Snow Patrol returned after 7 years away, tighter, better vocally and musically and they genuinely looked pleased to be back

This was my 5th SP concert and my favourite so far. All the classics you’d expect Run, Chasing Cars, Chocolat, all seamlessly mixed in with new tracks from Wildness. Highlights for me were Life on Earth Don’t Give In (Gary missed a high note so got the crowd to help!) and Run. Lots of chat in between songs which he doesn’t always do made me feel like they were genuinely excited to be playing live again. Having a sing off between seated and people on the floor( floor won of course)

Waiting for next tour now, I’ll be there!!

Absolutely fantastic!!! This was the first time I’ve seen snow patrol live, but it won’t be the last. Gary was on point with his singing. The whole show was put together flawlessly. The effects light and vision just enhanced the experience. The lightning strike was my favourite song and must say great stage effects with leafs projected onto netting blowing around them. Was a great surprise when James Cordon was brought out onto the stage for ‘what if this is all the love you ever get’ unfortunately missed the first warm up act but saw Kodaline they were great too. The venu was great no big ques getting in or out. The new songs seemed to fit into the classic older material as if they belonged there. Hope to see them again in the future

Saw Snow Patrol on their 'Reworked' Tour at Oxford New Theatre. They did a show in two parts, the first at just under an hour was down tempo reworkings and, after an interval, we had an hour and 40 of more up tempo reworkings. It was a fine set of songs including a number picked by fans in a poll. Some had never been played live before this tour. I had previously seen Snow Patrol in large arena settings, and it has to be said that this was far more enjoyable. There was a much more intimate feeling about the whole thing, the sing-a-longs in a confined space were awesome to be a part of, and Gary could actually talk with the audience. In summary this was one of the gig highlights of the year. Catch them on this tour of you can!

Snow Patrol are back after a few years off the scene and they are a good as ever.

OK perhaps I'm biased as a big fan, but I was expecting their sound to be not as good as before and that Gary would be subdued and not as chatty. I also wondered if they would get a great response from the audience. Well I needn't have had any doubts as they were as good as ever.

There was a great warm atmosphere at the gig at the Islington Assembly Hall which is a lovely small venue and ideal for their comeback gig. They were on stage for approx 90 mins and performed some of their familiar songs as well as some brand new ones from their soon to be released album.

Hope to see them again in the not too distant future.

Seeing Snow Patrol in concert is an AMAZING EXPERIENCE! From the get-go, these guys kick it up and deliver a thrilling experience that leaves listeners inspired, energized, and wanting more. The band is personable and lively. Gary Lightbody is warm, endearing and entertaining, too. I think his favorite word is the f-word, but the way he uses it just makes listeners laugh with delight. Gary shares from the heart, and earns many fans due to his honesty and down-to-earthiness. The band are true friends - it is obvious in many shows how close they are, and how much they really enjoy doing a gig for the audience. Lots of smiles between the band, and smiles all around. A Snow Patrol concert is one not to be missed!

The main thing to get about Snow Patrol is that, 14 years after they started out as a student band at Dundee University, they're still flying, gloriously and unpredictably, by the seat of their pants. "The great and terrifying thing about our band," declares their leader and main songwriter Gary Lightbody, "Is that everything has always happened as it's going along. There's been very little masterplan. We allow things to happen as much by accident as by deliberate intention." One notable early accident was their name. Lightbody's band used to be known as Polar Bear - hence their 1998 debut album Songs For Polarbears - but were obliged to change it after discovering that this was what the bassist of Jane's Addiction was calling his side project. 'Snow Patrol' had already been chosen for them by a friend who didn't care for the Polar Bear moniker; and so it came to pass that Snow Patrol signed in 1995 to the Jeepster label, home of their Glaswegian indie heroes at the time, Belle and Sebastian. Now that the band have become feted as commercial giants - their last album Eyes Open was the UK's best-seller of 2006, it's worth remembering that Snow Patrol spent the 1990's so broke that at one low point Lightbody had to sell his record collection to pay the rent. Jeepster finally dropped them in 2001 after their second album, the presciently titled When It's All Over We Still Have To Clear Up, failed to connect beyond their passionate but stubbornly tiny fanbase. "We spent 10 years making records that 6000 people bought," Lightbody confirms. "Success to us isn't a chart thing, it's when you turn up to play a gig and find the place is full." In the early days, their largest audiences were back in Ireland, the country where Bangor-born Lightbody grew up before moving to Scotland as a student. "We're very lucky in that we seem to have three home town audiences in Belfast, Dublin and Glasgow, although we get an extraordinary reception whenever we play anywhere in Ireland or Scotland." Snow Patrol began to get considerably bigger all over the UK and in America after signing to the Fiction label in 2003 and hooking up with the producer Garrett 'Jacknife' Lee. "An amazing influence," in Lightbody's estimation, "Jacknife has become like an indispensable member of the band. I can't imagine working with any other producer." Under Lee's inspired guidance, Snow Patrol and their increasingly charismatic vocalist Lightbody, shed some of their indie rough edges and began to hone their pop smarts. In 2003 they released Final Straw their first number one album, which yielded the band's first top 5 hit, Run. It also won them the inaugural Ivor Novello for best album in 2004. In 2005 they moved into a remote studio in the middle of Ireland, Grouse Lodge, and completed Eyes Open, home of one of the most emotionally potent tunes of the 21st century, Chasing Cars. With over 100,000 radio plays in the UK, 2m downloads in the US, and the accolade of 'Best Song of All Time' from the listeners of Virgin Radio, Chasing Cars also had the rare distinction of closing the BBC's long running TV chart show Top Of The Pops in July 2006. The effect on the Eyes Open album was phenomenal, leading to a final sales tally of 4.7m copies worldwide. At this point most similarly blessed bands would probably have either taken a long, expensive holiday, or re-grouped for another assault on the global pop charts. Lightbody and co did neither, opting instead to call up Jacknife Lee and make an album which took them on an unexpected creative odyssey from Galway in the West Of Ireland, back to Grouse Lodge in County Meath and on to the legendary Hansa studio in Berlin where Bowie and many other luminaries from the 1970's recorded seminal work. In line with the innovative traditions of the studio the album, A Hundred Million Suns, is Snow Patrol's most ambitious and exhilarating collection so far; and one in which Lightbody feels his band has, accidentally of course, squared its own circle. "This is our most complete record by far. A Hundred Million Suns sounds like the marriage of everything we learned from the Jeepster years and the Fiction years made into something new and bolder. Our spikiness and our indie-ness are coming through again with all the poppiness of the last two records. There's a lot of melody here and you can't cloak that whatever you do with it. This album is touched by our entire history, and hopefully sounds like our future too."

The concert is in celebration of frontman Gary Lightbody being awarded the freedom of the Borough in the local area.

Published on

Gary-Lightbody-Next-Album-2024

Gary Lightbody, lead singer of Snow Patrol and the City of Bangor’s most famous son, will be awarded the Freedom of the Borough by Ards and North Down Borough Council at a special civic ceremony to be held at Bangor Castle in Northern Ireland on August 30.

In celebration of receiving the award, which is the highest honor the Council can bestow, Gary is bringing the band back home for a very special one-off acoustic concert on Bangor seafront.

Organized by Open House Festival in partnership with Ards and North Down Borough Council, the concert will take place on the evening of Wednesday August 31, with tickets on sale from Friday, July 8 .

‘Eyes Without A Face’: Billy Idol’s Dreamy Ballad With A Dark Inspiration

Lightbody grew up in Bangor, attending Rathmore Primary School and Campbell College before heading to university in Dundee, where he formed Snow Patrol. He would later be joined in the band by fellow Bangorian, Jonny Quinn. Gary has always maintained strong links with Northern Ireland and Bangor in particular, and has extended his support to upcoming musicians from the area and to the work that Open House is doing to help regenerate the city through arts and culture.

The band has played to mass audiences in Bangor’s Ward Park three times in the past fifteen years – in 2007, 2010 and most recently 2019 – but this concert will have a much more intimate feel. Profits from the event will go to Open House for their re-development of the old Bangor Court House into a non-profit music venue, which is nearing completion.

“Thank you to Ards and North Down Borough Council for this honor. I was born and grew up in the Borough, and though I may have wandered for a few years, I made my home back in Bangor again. Johnny, Nathan and myself are really looking forward to playing on Bangor seafront for the very first time. It’ll be great craic. This town, indeed newly minted city, has always been a part of me and always will be. I do still mourn Paul’s chippy on the seafront though,” said Gary Lightbody.

For the new Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councilor Karen Douglas, there is a particular synergy to the timing of the concert and the bestowing of the award, as she put Gary forward to receive the honor back in October 2019, along with Councilor Craig Blaney, now the Deputy Mayor. The two councilors made the proposal on the basis of the outstanding contribution Gary has made to the local area as a musician of international standing, a philanthropist, and a champion of local charitable causes.

“I was Deputy Mayor when Councilor Blaney and I made the proposal,” said Councilor Douglas. “I’m delighted that the proposal was approved by my fellow council members and thrilled to be serving my Borough as Mayor when the honor is officially conferred. Gary Lightbody is an international name, but he is most loved and appreciated by the people of Bangor and the wider Borough and I’m sure they will join me in extending heartfelt congratulations on receiving this award and grateful thanks for everything he does for our local community.”

She continued: “The Snow Patrol acoustic concert on Bangor seafront to mark this auspicious occasion will no doubt become one of the standout events in our city’s musical history and we are grateful to Gary and the other members of the band for working it into their immensely busy schedule. It will be a befitting and celebratory end to a summer of music, events and entertainment across the Borough.”

Kieran Gilmore, Director of Open House, said: “It will be an honor to host Snow Patrol acoustic on our seafront and help Gary Lightbody mark this rare and exceptional honor. The fact that the concert is taking place just opposite the Court House is particularly apt, as profits are in aid of our restoration of the building and will help to complete the final phase of the project before we open the doors later this year.

“We held our first Open House event in Bangor ten years ago in the summer of 2012,” he continued, “and since then we have focused our efforts on creating a creative town – now a creative city, of course. Bangor may have a relatively small centre, but it is bursting with creativity and talent and Gary is at the pinnacle of that. Yes it still has its challenges, but there is so much hope on the horizon for our new city. We like to think big at Open House and are already considering how a future application for U.K. City of Culture would look. Gary and the Council share the same vision as us and that’s why they are supporting the Court House project.”

This is the third time the Freedom of the Borough has been extended since the establishment of Ards and North Down Borough Council in 2015, and the first time it has been awarded to an individual. Experience a Winter Winery Adventure

snow patrol acoustic tour

While Michigan wineries are a prime destination in summer and fall, they’re also the perfect place to have an outdoor winter adventure. Wineries all around the state feature trails for snowshoeing, hiking, fat-tire biking, and cross-country skiing. Experience the beauty of the season and get some fresh air during the colder months — and then warm up inside with Michigan wine.

“So many people come up in the summer or in the fall, and it’s beautiful here in the winter,” says Chris Lopez, retail sales manager at Black Star Farms, of northern Michigan’s wine country. “I tell people all the time they should come up in the winter. It’s gorgeous, everything’s less expensive, it’s not as busy — you can get into restaurants and such. So it’s a great time to come up and enjoy what Michigan’s like year-round.”

Black Star Farms, among many other wineries, has a series of trails for guests to explore on snowshoes. The trails provide stunning views of snowy vineyards and surrounding scenery, as well as a means for exercise.

In short: “It’s fun — you get out there, you get a little exercise, you get some fresh air, and you come back and have something to eat and enjoy some wine,” Lopez says. “Sounds like a great Saturday to me.”

Here are some winter winery trails to visit this season in Michigan.

Winery trails and events:

45 North’s vineyard trail is open and free to use during business hours (winter hours are noon to 5 p.m. Sunday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday). The 3-mile groomed trail begins near the tasting room and travels through the vineyards, up a hill — with a picturesque view — and through woods. Another 1.6-mile path is for snowshoes only. Snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, fat-tire biking, and hiking are permitted, with designated areas for each. A snowshoe or cross-country ski rental package is available seven days per week through Grand Traverse Bike Tours . Visit the trail’s Facebook page for information on trail conditions and events.

Aurora Cellars has three trail loops that range in length from a half-mile to a mile. The winery has partnered with Grand Traverse Bike Tours to offer a Snowshoes and Igloos self-guided tour. The package — which includes snowshoe rentals, an igloo reservation, a private outdoor stove fire to warm up near, and a warm lunch basket — is offered Thursday through Monday from December to March. Advance reservations are strongly recommended.

Black Star Farms , Suttons Bay The winter trails at Black Star Farms are accessible to guests of all skill levels (“You don’t have to be any expert to do our trails,” Lopez says) and are open at any time. Join the winery on Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. starting Jan. 8, 2022, plus every day Dec. 26–31 and select Sundays, for Snowshoes, Vines, and Wines . Suttons Bay Bikes will be on-site providing snowshoe rentals for $20, and the winery’s Hearth & Vine Café will offer hot snacks, including chili and soup to eat and mulled wine to drink. The winery has four trails, three up to a half-mile long and one that is 1.5 miles long, that traverse the 160-acre property. The longest trail starts at the top of a hill with a stunning view over the vineyard. “You can see the bay from up at the top,” Lopez says. “It’s really pretty.”

For guests at the Inn at Black Star Farms, the Winter Adventure Package provides a full day of winter fun. The day starts at 11 a.m., when guests are picked up at the Inn and driven to Suttons Bay Bikes to secure fat-tire bikes. Next is a 4-mile ride on the Leelanau Trail back to Black Star Farms, where a hot lunch is served. Then, guests will explore the trails on Black Star Farms’ property on snowshoes. The bike and snowshoe rentals last for 24 hours, which allows for leisurely exploration. Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance.

Brys Estate offers two winter trails, open Dec. 3, 2021, through March 6, 2022, for snowshoers and skiers of varying levels. The “casual” Green Trail begins and ends at the tasting room, leading guests around the vineyard and farmhouse. The intermediate-level Purple Trail heads off the Green Trail to form a loop that takes guests to the Secret Garden and lavender fields. The winery offers a $15 special that includes hot spiked apple cider in a souvenir mug, and visitors can purchase snacks and wine by the glass, as well as nonalcoholic beverages, to enjoy by an outdoor firepit on the property. Snowshoe and ski rentals are available through Brick Wheels .

Mt. Tabor Trails connects two southwest Michigan wineries: Round Barn Estate and Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant. The trails vary from easy to difficult and encompass a variety of terrains and views, including fields, woods, and vineyard. The trails — open year-round — are free to access and begin at both Round Barn and Tabor Hill. Snowshoes and cross-country skis are allowed on the trail, but bikes are not permitted.

Rove Estate offers a self-guided, easy snowshoe trail that reaches the highest point in Leelanau County and has spectacular views of the area. The trail is open whenever there is snow.

Shady Lane Cellars is a sponsor of TART Trails and has recently added a 3-mile groomed cross-country trail that loops around the property and connects to one of the TART trails. Fat-tire bike rentals for the TART trail are available through Grand Traverse Bike Tours.

Virtue Cider has a system of trails, each up to a mile long, with “plenty of entry and exit points along the trails to make the trek as short or as long as you’d like,” Virtue Cider reps say via email. Virtue opens and closes trails as needed, and the trails offer views of fields and woods. The trails are open year-round during the taproom’s hours, and snowshoes, cross-country skis, and fat-tire bikes are allowed at guests’ discretion. Snowshoe rentals are occasionally available and listed on AnyRoad. When there’s enough snow, Virtue will sometimes host a guided snowshoe tour. “It’s about an hour guided walk through our field trails while speaking on the history and story of VC, followed up by a mulled hard cider for adults,” Virtue reps say. Whether you take a self-guided or guided tour, “it’s West Michigan culture to want to be out and about during the frigid cold. We’re here waiting to keep you warm.”

Other trails and events:

Grand Traverse Bike Tours Grand Traverse Bike Tours offers fat-tire bike rentals and a self-guided and a guided tour. The self-guided Bikes, Brews, and Igloos Tour includes fat-tire bike rentals and an igloo reservation at Hop Lot Brewing Co. as well as a souvenir water bottle and map of the Leelanau Trail, all for $59 per person. An Evening Lights Package upgrade ($8) is available for guests who wish to tour after dark.

The Vine to Wine Snowshoe Tour takes guests to three wineries in northern Michigan on a 3- or 5-mile snowshoe trail for a “full afternoon excursion,” says Nick Wierzba, co-owner of Grand Traverse Bike Tours. This guided tour includes a catered lunch and stops at bigLITTLE Wines, Ciccone Vineyards, and Suttons Bay Ciders. A van brings purchases to guests’ cars at the end of the tour. “We’re just trying to make it easy,” Wierzba says. “If you do purchase wine, you don’t have to worry about lugging it around. We make sure that it’s all brought to you back at the end.” Group tours take place on Saturdays, and private tours (with four to 12 people) are offered Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. The tour is $69 per person, and advance reservations are required.

Touring wineries by snowshoe makes for a unique experience, Wierzba says. “What’s great about our tour is it’s a different way of experiencing the vineyards and the wineries than driving around,” he says. “You’re on foot; it’s a little safer, as far as if you’re tasting wine and going from one winery to the next. And we’re able to connect them all on a snowshoe trail. It’s a fun way of getting out and experiencing northern Michigan, soaking in the views, and sampling some wines.”

TART Trails Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails has a variety of trails in the Traverse City area, including the Leelanau Trail , which runs from Traverse City to Suttons Bay, near many wineries. The Leelanau Trail is groomed in winter and has the proper conditions for snowshoeing, classic and skate skiing, and fat-tire biking.

TART Trails’ 12th annual Winter Trails Day takes place Jan. 8, 2022, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Timber Ridge Resort. TART is partnering with Suttons Bay Bikes, Brick Wheels, Vasa Ski Club, the Northern Michigan Mountain Bike Association, Timber Ridge Lodge, and the Record-Eagle to provide free guided snowshoe hikes, fat-tire bike demonstrations, introductory ski lessons, and equipment rentals. The event is free, but advance or same-day registration is required.

TC Brew Bus Snowshoe, Wine, and Brew, presented by TC Brew Bus, is a snowshoe tour that brings participants to three wineries and breweries on the Old Mission Peninsula. Participants will board the TC Brew Bus at the Jolly Pumpkin Restaurant & Brewery, travel by bus to Brys Estate Vineyard & Winery, and snowshoe to Bowers Harbor Vineyards and back to the Jolly Pumpkin. Each ticket costs $28 and includes spiked hot cider at Brys Estate, a glass of wine at Bowers Harbor, and a beer at the Jolly Pumpkin, along with discounts at each stop. The event is offered every Sunday from Dec. 5, 2021, through March 6, 2022. Participants can rent snowshoes in advance for $15 per pair.

11 Best Train Rides in Michigan | Scenic Michigan Train Tours

Michigan has several picturesque routes that you can drive. But it also has several that you can only see on authentic train rides. Through countrysides and historic towns, taking a scenic train ride in Michigan is a fun way to tour the Mitten especially during the fall .

Many of the trains are historic themselves and have been restored to give you the chance to experience a piece of the past. In fact, the state has a rich history in the railroad industry. The next time you want a one-of-a-kind day trip, check out the below train rides in Michigan .

Steam Railroading Institute-Owosso

Michigan’s Railroad History

The railroad system in Michigan started in 1833 when the first tracks were laid between Adrian and Toledo on the Erie & Kalamazoo Railroad. Surprisingly, it was a state newspaper — The Western Immigrant — that suggested building a transcontinental railroad the year before.

However, it took three years for horse-powered rail services to start on the line. That’s right! The first rail services were powered with horses, not trains. It wasn’t until 1837 that the first steam locomotive was placed into service on the Erie & Kalamazoo Railroad.

Rail Expansion Across the State

In the meantime, other parts of Michigan started building railways. Construction began on the Michigan Central Railroad in 1836. It connected Detroit with Ypsilanti in 1838, Ann Arbor in 1839, and Jackson in 1841. By this point, the Michigan rail system had grown to more than 104 miles.

By the end of the decade, more rail construction connected Detroit with Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, and New Buffalo, making it the first line to cross the state. This gave Michigan 380 miles of rail line as of 1850. After that, the tracks expanded across state lines, allowing service into Chicago for the first time in 1852. Four years later, a line connecting Detroit to Toledo was completed.

In 1855, the Iron Mountain Railroad was the first common carrier line to be chartered in the Upper Peninsula. Then, the Negaunee-Marquette line was finished in 1857. Michigan had 770 miles of railroad by 1860 and 1,739 miles by 1870. In 1871, the state built 559 miles of mainline track, the most in a single year.

Railroad expansion continued at a significant pace, reaching 3,823 miles by 1880, 6,957 miles by 1890, and 7,946 miles by 1900. Michigan had more than 9,000 miles of track by 1910. Meanwhile, the road system was improving, so more people were using cars and trucks to get around. As a result, the miles of railroad track began to shrink. As of 2010, the length of Michigan’s railroads had dropped to a collective 3,634 miles.

Contribution to Economy

The rail boom had a very important role in Michigan’s economic development. Freight railroads gave shippers a cost-effective means to transport bulk and heavy commodities. The automotive industry still depends on the rails to transport materials between their plants and to move finished vehicles to their markets. Also, the agricultural industry relies on freight rails to ship grains to the marketplace.

Over recent years, freight lines and the trucking industry have collaborated to transport goods via containers. Along with being cost effective, it’s an energy-efficient alternative to trucking because it generates less air pollution. Furthermore, railroads are critical to the country’s defense in terms of transporting heavy weaponry.

Intercity Passenger Services

Intercity passenger service between Kalamazoo and Detroit started in 1846 and was provided by the private railroads until 1971. Then, Amtrak was established to operate a passenger service. This era began with two daily round trips between Detroit and Chicago.

In 1974, the frequency was increased to three daily round trips, and one of them went to Toledo. The Chicago-Port Huron service started the same year, and the Chicago-Grand Rapids service started in 1984. In 1994, the two services that ended in Detroit were extended to Pontiac. The following year, the third service that ended in Toledo was rerouted to Pontiac.

The passenger business remained relatively steady for several years before a major increase during the beginning of the 21st century. Statewide intercity passenger numbers achieved a record high in 2013 and decreased slightly in 2014. The 2013 high may have been influenced by Amtrak launching services that operate at up to 110 mph, the first in the United States outside of the Northeast corridor.

Amtrak and private railroads continue to offer passenger train rides in Michigan, contributing to the state’s economic well-being. The services connect people to educational and career opportunities, increase productivity, encourage tourism, raise property values around the stations, and enhance environmental efficiency.

Train Rides in Michigan Upper Peninsula

Lake linden and torch lake railroad.

On the west side of the Upper Peninsula in Lake Linden, the Houghton County Historical Society runs a museum complex with a wide selection of exhibits, including large machines that are displayed outdoors. The Keweenaw Peninsula village used to be home to the biggest copper milling operation on the continent, and the society showcases its importance. The museum building has three floors with artifacts and other items regarding local mining, logging, and cultural history.

Among these exhibits is a working Calumet & Hecla Mining Co. train, which you can ride on the Lake Linden and Torch Lake Railroad . These historic train rides in Michigan are available during the summer and part of October for Halloween-themed adventures. The train travels a ⅖-mile loop around the museum campus, and the cheap ticket fees pay for track and car maintenance. If you live in the area, annual family passes are available. Once you’ve finished your train ride head to Marquette for a beautiful color tour .

Tahquamenon Falls Riverboat Tour & the Famous Toonerville Trolley

Tahquamenon Falls Riverboat Tours has been offering riverboat and scenic train rides in Michigan since 1927. The tours are located on a logging site that was once operated by Robert Hunter. He purchased the 15,000 acres in the early 1900s and had a small rail line — the Hunter and Love Line — built to aid the work.

At the time, lumberjacks would stack harvested trees on the river bank in the winter. When spring came, the river would thaw, swell from the melting snow, and carry the logs downstream and over Upper Tahquamenon Falls (the Niagara of Michigan) to Lake Superior. In the process, though, many of the trees would absorb too much water and sink, or they would sustain damage going over the falls.

The Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railroad built the Hunter and Love Line, which spurred from Soo Junction, Michigan, to the sawmill about 5.5 miles away. The 24-inch gauge railroad was completed in 1910, aiding the transport of the harvested trees.

Hunter completed his logging operation in 1925, at which time the sawmill and railroad spur were shut down. Eventually, the rail was reopened to shorten Joe Beach’s daily river patrol as a conservation officer at the McNearney Farm along the river. Then, he got the idea to start a waterfall tour business using the rail line and a riverboat.

You can experience the 6.5-hour tour for yourself. It begins at Soo Junction with a 35-minute ride on the Toonerville Trolley — a narrow gauge train — and is followed with a 2-hour narrated cruise on a riverboat. Once you reach the rapids above Upper Tahquamenon Falls, you can disembark and hike the ⅝-mile trail to see the falls. You get about 1 hour and 15 minutes to explore the area before returning to Soo Junction.

Polar Express Train Rides In Michigan

Southwest Michigan Train Rides

Coopersville & marne railway.

Offering historic train rides in Michigan, the Coopersville & Marne Railway is an all-volunteer railway that operates vintage locomotives and passenger cars from the 1920s. First laid in 1858, the tracks run for about 14 miles from Coopersville to Grand Rapids . However, the passenger service only travels 7 miles between Coopersville and Marne. The rest of the line between Marne and Grand Rapids is reserved for hauling freight cars.

The passenger services run between spring and winter, preserving a part of Michigan’s railroad history and educating you along the way. During the ride, the train crosses over an open deck girder bridge, a road bridge, and four creeks. Part of the way, the track runs alongside Interstate 96. Upon arrival in Marne, the vintage locomotive detaches from the cars, moves onto the passing tracks, and reattaches to the other end of the train to pull it back to Coopersville — all within about 90 minutes.

On Saturdays during the summer, the railway operates EnterTRAINment Excursions. These rides feature a variety of musicians and the Singing Trainman, who performs railroad and other acoustic songs. You even learn about the railroad history and equipment from the conductor. In addition, the Coopersville & Marne Railway offers specialty train rides throughout the year:

  • The Bunny Train operates in the spring and features the Easter Bunny with a cast of musical, wacky characters who perform and pass out toys.
  • The Veterans Free Troop Train operates around Memorial Day weekend, offering free rides to veterans.
  • The Great Train Robbery is an event that takes you back to 1858, giving you the thrill of the Wild Old West with a shootout between recognizable characters.
  • The Murder Mystery Train involves solving a simple robbery that turns into a murder mystery.
  • The Famous Pumpkin Train is a fall train rides Michigan tradition featuring the Scarecrow, Little Crow, and Grand Pumpkin.
  • The Santa Train in the winter gives kids a chance to meet Santa and his friends and listen to Christmas-themed stories told by a Princess.

Little River Railroad

Using an authentic steam engine train that’s more than 100 years old, the Little River Railroad offers scenic train rides in Michigan. The ride runs from Coldwater to Quincy or Hillsdale before returning to Coldwater. When the train gets to Quincy or Hillsdale, it takes about 30 minutes for the locomotive to detach and reattach for the return journey. During this time, you’re allowed to get out of the passenger car and watch the process.

The price and length of the train rides depend on the theme that Little River Railroad has planned. Here’s an overview:

  • The Lazy Days summer rides and Holiday Express with Santa last for about 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  • The Easter Bunny Express with an Easter Egg Hunt, Father’s Day ride, Quincy Flyer, and Fall Pumpkin Train last about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  • The Hillsdale Flyer is about 4 hours because the city is farther away than Quincy.

Additionally, you can rent a passenger car or the entire train. It’s a unique way to celebrate a birthday, family reunion, company event, or other gathering.

Steam Railroading Institute-Owosso

Train Rides in Southeast Michigan

Steam railroading institute.

Operating the famous Pere Marquette No. 1225 , the Steam Railroading Institute offers some of the most popular train rides in Michigan. The institute manages a museum complex where the former Ann Arbor Railroad roundhouse and steam shops were located in Owosso. Through the summer, the complex is open for tours.

When you first arrive, go to the Welcome Center to see a model railroad layout, a collection of archival materials and artifacts, and other exhibits. A volunteer guide can take you through the museum and give you a behind-the-scenes peek at the collection and equipment. The highlight of the tour is visiting the back shop where the Pere Marquette rests when it’s not in operation. Make sure that you visit the gift shop for fun railroad toys, souvenirs, and specialty gifts before leaving.

Throughout the year, you can ride the Pere Marquette 1225 , one of the biggest operating steam locomotives in Michigan. It’s famous for being the muse for the 2004 animated film “The Polar Express.” The animated train was created based on its blueprints and sounds. Although weekend trips and sporadic all-day excursions are available during the year, the 1-hour The Polar Express train ride in Michigan attracts a lot of people in December.

In addition, the SRI complex features a 7.5-gauge miniature railroad. The little train operates between the rails and parallel with the Shiawassee River Trail. It’s a fun ride for all ages and is only available on Fridays and Saturdays between Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Huckleberry Railroad At Crossroads Village-Flint-

Huckleberry Railroad at Crossroads Village

From Memorial Day through Labor Day, you have the chance for scenic train rides in Michigan on the Huckleberry Railroad . The railroad was part of Flint Pere Marquette Railroad Company when it was put into operation in 1857. The line got its name from the trains running so slow that a person could jump off, pick some huckleberries, and jump back on without much effort.

You can ride this historic line on a 40-minute journey from Crossroads Village. The railroad operates three locomotives — one diesel, one coal-fired, and one steam — on a rotation to accommodate repairs and improvements. The locomotives pull original and replica wooden coaches along Mott Lake and down the historic Pere Marquette roadbed before turning back to Crossroads Village.

For a couple of weekends during the summer, you have the chance to spend the day with Thomas the Tank Engine. The event features a ride on Thomas, meeting with Sir Topham Hatt, lawn games, and more. It’s an exciting event for young kids who love watching Thomas at home.

Also, Crossroads Village has more than 34 historic structures to explore. You can’t visit for a train ride without catching a show at the opera house, learning about craftsman trades, or hopping on amusement rides. Your ride on the Huckleberry Railroad is only one small part of an all-day adventure.

Michigan Fall Color Train Tour On The Pere Marquette 1225

Michigan Transit Museum

In Mt. Clemens, the Michigan Transit Museum is located in the old Mount Clemens Train Station, which was built in 1859 and operated until 1980. The building is on the National Registry of Historic Places and houses a range of exhibits that keep alive Michigan’s railroad history. During its operation, the depot was part of a 60-mile line that ran between Detroit and Port Huron.

A harrowing story at the depot — Thomas Edison saved the son of the station agent in 1862. The boy was on the tracks and in the path of a boxcar. As thanks, the station agent taught Edison telegraphy, which started his short railroading career and some of his earliest inventions.

Aside from exhibits, the Michigan Transit Museum offers train rides on its continuously restored equipment. The coaches are pulled by a former United States Air Force Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton RS4TC diesel switcher. Only the military owned this specific model, and the museum is one of several places across the country that has one to preserve. All of the train rides are about 45 minutes and feature a different theme throughout the year:

  • Summer trains run mid-June to mid-September
  • Fall Harvest trains run from mid-September to mid-October
  • Trick-or-Treat trains run at the end of October
  • Holiday Express trains run in December

Greenfield Village-Dearborn

Greenfield Village at the Henry Ford Museum

The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn is an internationally recognized destination that immerses visitors in the innovation and resourcefulness that helped make the United States what it is today. It’s a historic landmark with an exceptional collection of artifacts that spans 300 years of history and continues to grow.

Greenfield Village is part of the experience, offering historic train rides in Michigan. The operating steam-powered locomotive is one of the oldest in the country. It runs on the Weiser Railroad from an 1800s train depot. During the ride, you learn about the history of railroading in the area. Afterward, you can explore the working late 19th-century roundhouse. This area of the museum complex features other modes of transport as well — Model T and horse-drawn carriage rides.

For a couple of weekends, Thomas the Tank Engine visits the Weiser Railroad. Along with riding the special character train, the all-day celebration includes meeting Sir Topham Hatt, magic shows, live music, storytelling, and more.

Southern Michigan Railroad-Clinton

Southern Michigan Railroad

Managed by the Southern Michigan Railroad Society, the Southern Michigan Railroad is a line that stretches for 13.5 miles. This Jackson Branch began in Palmyra in 1836 and was expanded to Tecumseh in 1837 and again to Clinton in 1853. What makes it different from the other railroads is that it’s completely owned by the organization and only used to preserve the line’s history. This makes it a living museum that operates historic train rides in Michigan .

While you learn about the historic railroad, the trains take you on a scenic journey through forests, countrysides, and small towns. During the year, the organization offers various themes. The 2-hour Spring Wildflower Trains run between Clinton and Tecumseh, giving you layover options to explore. The Summer Tours run from Clinton to Tecumseh, and the Fall Colors Tours in October run from Tecumseh to Clinton. In December, Santa Tours are available. You have the chance to attend popular events in the towns during some of these train rides.

The Old Road Dinner Train

For a Michigan train tour with dinner, hop aboard The Old Road Dinner Train operated by the Adrian & Blissfield Rail Road Company. The trains operate from Blissfield and Charlotte.

The Blissfield Train runs on part of the original Erie & Kalamazoo Railroad through rich farmland in Southeastern Michigan that is thought to have been the bottom of Lake Erie at one time. The ride takes you to Lenawee Junction where more than 40 trains used to exchange passengers and goods every day. You can book three-course lunches or five-course dinners — both with an optional murder mystery. Weekday evening charters are also available.

The Charlotte Train runs on part of the Grand Valley Rail Road, which was built in 1870 and connects Jackson and Grand Rapids. During the leisure, 2-hour round trip, you pass through historic Charlotte and some countryside to the east. On the other hand, you can book a five-course dinner with or without a murder mystery.

Along with fine dining, the Murder Mystery Trains feature a humorous tableside mystery with an acting troupe. The group rotates the shows during the year and selects some of the riders to participate. The murder mystery and dinner take about 3 hours.

Moreover, the Adrian & Blissfield Rail Road Company offers several specialty train rides in December. You can have lunch with Santa, experience the Santa Express, or solve the New Year’s Eve murder mystery. In any case, you can expect a spectacular show and delicious food.

Coopersville Train - Fall In Michigan

Alternative — A Southern Michigan Train Tour on Amtrak

For the most part, the above train rides in Michigan only allow you to explore a town or two. Did you know that Amtrak makes it easy to visit multiple cities in Southern Michigan ? The center of the company’s cross-country rail system is in Chicago, and the trains make frequent daily trips to key cities in Michigan — Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, East Lansing , Battle Creek, Jackson, Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Port Huron.

In fact, there are 22 depots from which you can start a Michigan train tour on Amtrak. It’s possible to plan an entire vacation out of riding the rails. Although you don’t get a history lesson with your ride, you can look out the window for a scenic view of the state’s beautiful landscape.

Have you experienced any of these Michigan train rides? Do you have a scenic train ride on your bucket list?

11 Best Train Rides in Michigan Story

A lover of all things Michigan. Will never get tired of exploring the unique places across the state and meeting all the awesome inspiring people that are here. Always ready for a new Michigan adventure! Owner, Director, and Chief Explorer!

Looking for a fun overnight train ride starting near Detroit and bringing us back after. Something four this fall time of year. Could you help me?

Hi Colleen,

We’ve asked this question in our Michigan Bucket List group on Facebook to see if anyone might have ideas for you: https://www.facebook.com/groups/michiganbucketlist/posts/367942101697564/ .

When we were kids in 1973, my dad put 14 year old me in charge of 3 younger brothers on a train from Detroit area to Battle Creek. He and the 5 year old drove on the highway and met us at the depot. We then toured the Post museum and the Kellogg’s factory. I remember the train had wooden benches. And the man announcing the stop called out “ Battle Crick!”
