Beyond these well-known destinations, though, there are many other great things to do in Pennsylvania Dutch Country.
This region comprises eight counties in south-central Pennsylvania and is a nice mix of cities and countryside. Throughout the region, visitors can hike the Appalachian Trail (its midpoint is in the region), fish or kayak the many waterways , and, yes, see the Amish, also known as Pennsylvania Dutch.
However, since the region is also home to some of Pennsylvania’s most dynamic mid-sized cities, there are also big city amenities to be found. Downtown Lancaster is bursting with art galleries and coffee shops , while the food scene and many breweries in Harrisburg are likely to wow you.
Combine this with the region’s many fantastic museums, such as the State Museum of Pennsylvania , the Army Heritage Center , and the Gettysburg Museum of the Civil War , the Factory Tour Capital of the World , and the first capital of the United States , and you’re sure to have a great time.
So, no matter what you want to do, there’s something fun to do in PA Dutch Country.

Amish Culture
Amish culture, religious traditions , and their history and beliefs .
Faith-based Amish traditions have remained largely unchanged since settlement in Lancaster County nearly 300 years ago. The Pennsylvania Amish are a private people who believe that God has called them to a simple life of faith, discipline, dedication and humility.
Lancaster County has deep Amish roots and although the County as a whole has electricity, highways, and other modern amenities that you'd expect, there are unique attributes about the area that are a result of its Amish culture influence. For example, as you drive the backroads of Lancaster, you'll see roadside stands with everything from canned vegetables and homemade root beer to fresh-cut flowers and produce. Also on that drive, you may come up a horse and buggy traveling slowly down the road. Additionally, the food scene is strongly impacted by the Amish and English farmers who provide fresh ingredients for farm-to-table delicacies.

While Pennsylvania Dutch Country consists of a lot of rural areas and is noted for its high Amish population, it is home to over 1.5 million people and maintains one of the highest rates of population growth in the Northeast United States due to lower cost of living but close proximity to major metropolitan areas. It is truly a diverse region with rolling hills, orchards and farms but also growing, vibrant yet historic cities.
The Pennsylvania Dutch (Amish) Community dates back to the 16th century Reformation in Europe, specifically the Anabaptist movement. There are three families of Anabaptist-related groups in PA Dutch Country: the Amish, Mennonites and Brethren. The three groups share many basic values and beliefs, with primary differences in dress, language, some forms of worship, and the extent to which they will use modern advancements.
Much of the "Plain" population (consisting of groups like the Amish and Old Order Mennonites) is bilingual, speaking both English and a dialect of German called "Pennsylvania Dutch." A much smaller portion of the non-Plain population of Pennsylvania Dutch descent is also bilingual. Among the Plain, some smaller children speak only this dialect until starting school. The name "Pennsylvania Dutch" is actually a mispronunciation of "Deitsch," or German in the regional dialect. Church services are held in "high German," as opposed to the dialect.
There are several regional airports in south central Pennsylvania but the largest and most used is Harrisburg International Airport (MDT) located in Middletown, just minutes from Harrisburg and PA Route 283. Harrisburg International Airport has over a dozen non-stop flights to cities in the U.S. and Toronto in Canada.
The easiest way to get around the region is by car. There is an extensive network of roads and the area is criss-crossed by several major interstates (81, 76, 83) and U.S. routes (11, 15, 22, 30).
Amtrak's high-speed Keystone line [dead link] travels through Lancaster and Dauphin county with stops in Lancaster, Mount Joy, Elizabethtown, Middletown, and Harrisburg is useful if traveling between Lancaster and Harrisburg but does not link up the rest of the places in PA Dutch Country.
The Plain and Fancy Farm provides a good all-around tour of the Amish community including a restaurant, bus tours and a movie. Particularly good if you're a foreign visitor without a car.
The Gettysburg National Military Park , just south of Gettysburg , is one of the most famous battlefields of the American Civil War . The National Apple Museum , north of Gettysburg, has exhibits on the apple industry in the region, and a recreated 1880s farm kitchen and a General Store.
Scrapple is of Pennsylvania Dutch origin. It is made from pork by-products, such as the pigs head, intestines, brains any of the scraps (hence the name scrapple) and cornmeal, cooked into a thick pudding, formed into a loaf, sliced then fried. A spicy pork breakfast product. A scrapple egg and cheese sandwich served on toast is common place.

Pennsylvania
A horse and buggy trundles through the Lancaster fog before it is overtaken by a Philadelphia-bound sports car driven by a young tech entrepreneur. In Pittsburgh, children of immigrants who work as nurses in the city's burgeoning hospitals start breaking into experimental contemporary art. In Gettysburg, descendants of Union soldiers proudly fly Confederate flags. This is Pennsylvania, which contains within her 46,000 sq miles some of the Eastern seaboard's most striking landscapes, culture clashes and contradictions.

- Bird-in-Hand
Intercourse
Other nearby counties, such as Berks County, Lebanon, and York County, also have significant Amish populations and are sometimes considered part of the Pennsylvania Dutch Country.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/dutch-wonderland.jpg)
Lancaster is right in the heart of Pennsylvania dutch country and is always our first stop in the area as there are so many fun things to do in Lancaster.
There is more to Lancaster than just Dutch Wonderland and it’s thrilled roller coasters. Although, it has to be the best amusement park for kids under age 10 and always a highlight of our trips.
Visitors usually come to this area to either visit this theme park or explore the Amish country. Then when there’s time left, explore some of the other amazing attractions and hidden gems on this list.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/amish-farm-lancaster.png)
For an introduction to the Amish way of life, start your trip at the Amish Farm & House to visit this Amish Village in Lancaster. While visiting you can tour
- The farmhouse
- Blacksmith shop
- 1-room schoolhouse
- Covered bridge
The farmhouse illustrates the simple Amish family with a house tour that includes an old fashioned kitchen, bedrooms, and the meaning of the different colored clothing worn by the Amish.
My daughter loved the wooden playground, riding a scooter, and seeing the various animals that included cows and hens. I found the tour brief, yet informative.
Wear comfortable shoes because the property is 15-acres or opt for the bus tour.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/north-museum-of-nature-and-science.jpg)
The North Museum of Nature and Science is a great place to visit with a dinosaur gallery and rocks so you can see a variety of rocks including:
- Rose quartz
- Black jasper
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/lancaster-stem.jpg)
The Hands-on House Children’s Museum is the perfect place for younger kids ages 2 to 10 which, as the name suggests, has a lot of hands-on, interactive activities for the kids like the Little Valley Farm Market and Little Valley Farm.
Older kids will have a whirl of fun tinkering with science activities and interactive exhibits at the Lancaster Science Factory .
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/central-market-1.jpg)
The Lancaster Central Market is an incredible market with tons of vendors selling everything from delicious food, fresh produce, candies & snacks, home decor and so much more.
The Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum is where you go to learn about the history and culture of the German population in the area. The Landis Valley Museum is actually an open-air museum which is neat to experience.
We also visited That Fish Place – That Pet Place, which turned out to be the largest pet store I have ever been to.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/turkey-hill-entrance.jpg)
If you don’t feel like visiting a particular place, one thing we love to do is just drive the country roads, see what we come across and enjoy the views. It’s a great way to explore the area!
* More Nearby Fun * Just outside of Lancaster is Columbia, PA which is a great place to see the National Watch and Clock Museum, participate in the Turkey Hill Experience and visit the Point Rock Tunnel on the Lancaster Country River Trail which is a national historic landmark.
The Susquehanna River also runs right through Lancaster County and offers some awesome water activities and experiences.
You can also walk or ride your bike down the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail or even rent bikes at Chiques Rock Outfitter’s Outpost by the Columbia Crossings River Trails Center.
Bird-In-Hand
Bird-in Hand Farmers Market
Fresh squeezed lemonade, handmade Amish quilts and more can be found at the Bird-in-Hand Farmers Market .
Located in the town with the same name, the indoor market is a fun way for families to sample Amish goods. Kitchen Kettle Village is on hand with a stock pile of jams and sauces for you to sample on crackers.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/harvest-cafe-breakfast-kitchen-kettle.jpg)
I bought some herb dip mix from “Smith’s My Own” and my kiddo enjoyed a pretzel dog from the Bird-in-Hand soft pretzel company.
Watch the ladies of Lennons Fudge stir the chocolate while sampling the treat. I was over the moon when I discovered that they serve funnel cake!
There’s even a lunch counter in the back where they serve up light fare and Turkey Hill ice cream.
Note : The market operates year round, but only on certain days depending on the time of year. Check the website for operation time as it is definitely worth a visit.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/image-3.png)
Village Petting Zoo
Visitors to the quaint village of Bird-in-Hand will enjoy mingling with the Amish and Mennonite local residents while perusing the local items at farmers’ markets and quilt shops.
If you’re up for a little more adventure, Lancaster Balloon Rides will take you on a hot air balloon ride with the most incredible views.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/How-Fast_Horse-and-Buggy.jpg)
For a more unique experience, Aaron and Jessica’s Amish Buggy Rides will take you through Amish farm community.
The buggy ride will take you along the road while one of the knowledgeable guides from one of the Amish communities will tell you about the history of the area, the Amish community and answer all your questions.
The ride is pulled by beautiful horses and this is definitely a neat Amish experience and even an educational experience at that.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism kids enjoying wagon ride at the Crest Adventure Farm](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/wagon-ride-at-the-farm.jpg)
You know you have stumbled across a great eatery when the truckers are lined up outside. While the décor is dated and cash is the only form of payment accepted, Route 30 Diner creates colossal pancakes and, according to my husband, an excellent steak and egg at a great price.
Their walls proudly display the military who serve our country.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism Little girl playing with chicken at the farm](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/farm-life.jpg)
We also love visiting the Cherry Crest Adventure Farm which has over 60 activities for the whole family to do. There are acres of fun to explore and it’s just a beautiful place to be.
It doesn’t sound exciting, but the Countryside Roadstand is a mix of authentic Amish goods, food and a farm all rolled into one. The family who owns the property live next store. If you’re looking for authentic Amish food, this is a great spot.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/wilbur-chocolate.webp)
They sell everything from:
- Headache salve
- Handmade soap
- Small furniture
- Whoopee pies and other snacks
- Buttery soft pretzels.
The view is beautiful with horse drawn buggies passing the country road. One of the employees was dumping old pretzels and gave them to my daughter and I so we could feed the animals out back.
Yep, in the back yard of the store were chicken, goats, sheep, peacocks, and an alpaca. It’s low-key fun for both children and adults. And yes, the headache balm does work!
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/47-Things-to-Do-in-Lancaster-PA-Full-Details-2023-lancaster.jpg)
If you are in the area from May to October, take a free tour of the Mascot Roller Mills . The craftsman gave us a little history and demonstrated how the grain and flour is processed at the mills.
There are great photo opportunities at Mill Creek which served as the source of water to power the mills.
We were pressed for time, but would have liked to have toured the miller’s house which is known as the Ressler family home.
For traditional Pennsylvania Dutch Cooking head to Dienner’s Country Restaurant . While it’s gotten rave reviews, I was glad to try some traditional Amish food and learn that the restaurant employees are Amish, Mennonite and “English.”
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/dienners-country-interior.jpg)
The Old Windmill Farm is a really fun experience and this is a place you don’t want to miss. They offer:
- A farm tour
- Live animals
- Hayride garden tour
- Barrel train ride
- Farmhouse experience complete with fresh pressing cider from local apples, making butter from fresh cream
Their petting zoo is also a blast as you can enjoy fun experiences like bottle feeding baby calves, holding baby chicks and milking a cow. If you choose to go, I warn you that your kids won’t want to leave!
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/national-toy-train-museum-lancaster.jpg)
If you have kids or any train lovers in your group, definitely make sure to visit the National Toy Train Museum.
We used to always stop at the Shoofly Pie Bakery for pie of course and their homemade root bear but sadly, they have now permanently closed.
Sometimes we pack a picnic and head to Groff’s Picnic Grove at the Strasburg Rail Road as they have some nice picnic tables and charcoal grills next to the tracks. There is also a playground for the kids with swings, merry-go-round and seesaws.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/wolves.jpg)
Despite being such a small town, there are some really great things to do here.
First, the Wolf Sanctuary of PA is an absolute must to be able to see the amazing wolves up close.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/julius-sturgis-pretzel-twisting.webp)
Other kid-friendly activities in Lancaster County include becoming a pretzel twisting pro at Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery in Lititz or a stop at the Lititz Springs Park is the perfect place to have picnic, feed ducks and enjoy nature.
They also have an awesome playground the kids absolutely love.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/lititz-spring-park.jpeg)
If you’re looking for some fresh fruit, make sure to stop by the Kissel Hill Fruit Farm.
There are also 2 covered bridges in Lititz: Keller’s Mill Covered Bridge and Erbs Covered Bridge which you can drive through as you pass local farmers and farmland.
For the art loves, make sure to check out one of the area’s local artisans, Andy Smith.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/ecs.jpg)
While Ephrata is another small area of PA Dutch Country, I still recommend visiting. Here is a list of things to do on your visit:
The Green Dragon Farmers Market is the best market in the area. And with so many vendors, this is a great spot to do all your shopping for:
- Fresh baked goods
- And millions of other items
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/fox-meadows-creamery.jpg)
While there are several covered bridges, while in Ephrata, make sure to drive through Bitzer’s Mill Covered Bridge, which is the oldest bridge still in use in not only Pennsylvania but the entire United States.
If you’re in to arts and crafts, make sure to visit Art of Recyle. They have free and low cost workshops so make sure to check their calendar. They also have a play area and craft room for the kids which is so fun. Plus, the free art classes for the kids are nice.
And when it’s a warm day (or not, we won’t judge!), stop by Fox Meadows Creamery for some seriously delicious ice cream.
The milk used in the ice cream is produced from their own dairy farm. If you can’t decide on a flavor (it is tough!), they have a sampler which comes with 4 different flavors.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/Lights-On_Snow-Buggy.jpg)
There is nothing quite liking taking a buggy ride through the countryside. It will definitely be the highlight of any trip! AAA buggy rides takes you through some beautiful scenery and a working farm with horses and cows.
They have a few different options for tours depending on the experience you’d like to have, what you’d like to see and how much time you have available.
Make sure to check their website for a discount coupon .
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/barrys-car-barn-intercourse.jpg)
Barry’s Car Barn is a car lover’s dream. While you can take a self-guided tour around, the owner shares his personal collection of some beautiful, classic cars from the 30’s through the 70’s and it’s a really great experience.
There are even some motorcycles and gas pumps in this amazing collection. They also have an interesting gift shop you’ll want to check out for things like license plates from 100+ years ago.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/kitche-kettle-village.jpg)
We stopped at Kitchen Kettle Village, a big shopping village with lots of shops and places to eat.
It was neat to watch them make fudge at the fudge shop so definitely check to see if they’re making fudge when you go. And good luck leaving without some!

The American Military Edged Weaponry Museum is also in Intercourse and has a large collection of US military knives. With over 5,000 artifacts used in numerous wars, you’ll see items like:
- Knuckle & trench knives
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/old-woodshed-intercourse.jpg)
If you’re looking for some home decor, homemade items or gifts, The Old Woodshed is definitely a place to shop. All the items are locally made by the Amish people and the shop itself is fun to look around in.
If you need a place to stop for a picnic or just want to spend some time outside, head to Intercourse Community Park. The park has a:
- Small pound with a fountain
- Paved walking trail
- Play area with swings & slides
- Volleyball court
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/strasburg-railroad-e1681485091889.jpeg)
Train lovers, this one’s for you. The town of Strasburg is all about trains. You can even spend the night in a caboose! Take a ride on the oldest short-line railroad in the U.S. aboard the Strasburg Railroad .
The Strasburg Rail Road is one of several train attractions in the village of Strasburg, offering 45-minute journeys through the Amish countryside.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/strasburg-rail-e1681483880997.jpeg)
There are seven options to enjoy the 45 minute round trip ride from Strasburg to Paradise.
You can also plan your trip around being there for a specific celebratory ride like the Day out with Thomas or Santa’s Paradise Express.
Across the street is the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania which has many restored trains to see and shares the history of these locomotives.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/trains-railroad-museum.jpg)
Many people visit the museum after a ride on the Strasburg Rail Road, especially as you can buy a combo pass to save on admission.
And if you’d like to do a non-train themed activity, head to Village Greens Miniature Golf and Snack Shoppe for a round of mini golf and a scoop of Turkey Hill ice cream.

Where to See Live Performances
If you’d like to see a live performance during your visit to the heart of Amish country, there are lots of good options. Some places that are definitely worth checking out area:
- Fulton Theatre
- Sign & Sound Theater (Christian theater)
- Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre
- Lancaster City Arts
- American Music Theatre

Where to Stay in PA Dutch Country
There are several options for lodging in and around Lancaster. Due to its central location, my family always checks into the Fulton Steamboat Inn . The steamboat backs up to farmland and is surrounded by a pond where you can feed ducks and koi. There’s a larger pond past the pirate ship playground and coin machines where you can feed a plethora of ducks pellets.
Children can adopt a fish during their stay with the “guppy love program.”
![pennsylvania dutch tourism](https://our-kids.com/wp-content/uploads/fulton-steamboat-inn.jpg)
Each room has a fridge and microwave which was a huge plus for my family. This time we picked a room that had bunk beds. Other amenities include an indoor pool, small game room, coin operated laundry, and cookies and lemonade in the lobby. Kids can get a free meal if they wear their sailor hat.
However, we didn’t care for the food or service in the restaurant. There are plenty of options along the highway.

Good to Know Before Visiting PA Dutch Country & The Amish Community
- Most attractions, stores and some restaurants close on Sundays. The Amish believe that Sunday is a day for rest and time should be spent with family.
- The Amish do not like their photograph taken. If they see a camera near them, don’t be surprised if they get defensive. Let them know that you respect their culture.
- While it seems like I drove across the state, everything is within minutes of each other by car.
During our visit to Pennsylvania Dutch Country, we tipped into downtown Lancaster which is very different from the Amish countryside.
Whether you’re heading solely to Dutch Wonderland or want to expand your visit, Pennsylvania’s Dutch Country makes for a relaxing family getaway.
It’s also a short drive from other cities and even other states if you want to continue your road trip. We really had a great time and this is one of the best places to visit in the state.

Rolling hills dotted with picture perfect farms. Small historic towns oozing old world charm. Horse drawn buggies roped up at the local grocers. Known as the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country, Lancaster County is synonymous with all things Amish and a simpler way of life.
I first visited the area a few years ago when I came to see friends. I fell in love with the serene landscapes, boutique shopping, and all the hilariously quirky town names. You’ll see what I mean. However, I didn’t get to everything on my to-do list, so I was keen for a revisit. This time Jeremy even got to tag along.
All located within Lancaster County, this top 10 list aims to inspire a memorable trip to the area. We hope you enjoy Pennsylvania Dutch Country as much as we did.

Where to Stay in Pennsylvania Dutch Country?
Attractions in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch Country are spread out across Lancaster County. It doesn’t really matter which town or city you stay in. Though, we found it most convenient to stay within 15 miles of Lancaster city.
- Hampton Inn & Suites in Ephrata – We spent our first few nights at this hotel. It was everything we’d expect from a Hampton Inn; clean, quiet, and comfortable.
- The Carriage House at Strasburg – The Hampton Inn was already booked out when we decided to extend our stay in the area. Luckily, we found this gem. The owners of this small motel have done an amazing job refurbishing it into a modern, clean, and comfortable lodging. The rooms even include a delicious breakfast across the street at the Speckled Hen Coffee House.
- Lancaster Arts Hotel – Originally constructed in the 1880’s, this converted brick warehouse is perfect for anyone looking for a bit of character in the heart of Lancaster city. We were keen to stay here, but they were already fully booked for our trip.

1. Start Your Day at the Lancaster Central Market
Come hungry, and ideally with a sweet tooth. The most popular spot in Lancaster is the Lancaster Central Market . Only open on Saturdays and Tuesdays, the market is the oldest, continuously running public farmers’ market in the country.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism Booking.com - Book a Late Escape Deal and get 15% off](https://www.expertexplorers.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/10/booking.jpg)
Its 60+ stalls include everything from freshly made breads, to produce, to canned jams, to knitwear. They also have an impressive section of international foods, like empanadas, falafel, West African dishes, and even freshly made pasta. Though, we favored the doughnuts. Yum!
![pennsylvania dutch tourism Lancaster Central Market view from above the marketplace floor, Lancaster, PA](https://www.expertexplorers.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Lancaster-Central-Market-view-from-above-the-marketplace-floor-Lancaster-PA-525x700.jpg)
2. Get Something Printed from the .918 Club
As we wandered the streets and boutique shops of Lancaster, we came across the most impressive handcraft market, BUilDING CHARACTER . Tucked down a little alley off N. Queen Street, there are over 70 vendors with tons of unique and quirky gifts.
At the front of the market, step into a 1920’s print shop. Run by volunteers from the .918 Club, the Heritage Press Museum keeps the art of printmaking alive with demonstrations.
We fell in love with their passion for their craft and showed our support by buying beautifully printed Christmas cards.

3. Learn to Twist Pretzels in Lititz
In the adorably sweet town of Lititz is the country’s first commercial pretzel bakery. Established in 1861, visitors can tour the original Julius Sturgis Bakery and learn how to make that famous pretzel twist. Unfortunately, they don’t give away their famous recipe, nor can you cook your play dough pretzel, but it’s a fascinating look into how the business progressed through the years.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism Making Pretzels at the Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery, Lititz](https://www.expertexplorers.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Making-Pretzels-at-the-Julius-Sturgis-Pretzel-Bakery-Lititz-1024x768.jpg)
4. Indulge Your Sweet Tooth at Wilbur Chocolate
Pennsylvania is known for chocolate making. Though Hershey’s is by far the most famous Pennsylvanian chocolate company, it wasn’t the first. Nor were they the first to sell chocolate drops. Wilbur’s Chocolate Buds were on the market almost 13 years before the famous little kisses appeared.
Though the old Wilbur Chocolate factory is now a hotel, apartment complex, and food hall, the new Wilbur Chocolate shop sits right across the street in Lititz. You can still watch the chocolate being made, and sample some of their sweetness.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism Wilbur chocolate buds in a bowl](https://www.expertexplorers.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Wilbur-chocolate-buds-in-a-bowl-1024x768.jpg)
5. Step into the Past at Ephrata Cloister
Located in the town of Ephrata, the Cloister is a true step back in time.
Developed in the early 1700’s, the Cloister was a spiritual community of around 80 celibate “brothers” and “sisters”. The founder, Conrad Beissel, believed earthly life should be spent preparing to achieve a spiritual union with God at the Second Coming.
The community went into decline after the founder passed in 1768, with the last member dying in 1813. We would guess having only celibate members played a role in the community’s demise. Today, the historic village is preserved as a museum.
As Covid affected opening hours, we weren’t able to go inside the buildings. However, we were able to walk around the site. There is a virtual online tour , with a map of the site and information on each of the buildings.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism Ephrata Cloister, Pennsylvania Dutch Country](https://www.expertexplorers.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Ephrata-Cloister-Pennsylvania-Dutch-Country-1024x684.jpg)
6. Hunt for Covered Bridges
Who doesn’t love covered bridges? We were surprised to learn there are so many of these historical beauties dotted around the countryside.
Our favorites included the Pinetown Bridge , originally built in 1868, and the Line Valley Bridge , originally built in 1871. Both were in such pretty settings, with gorgeous interiors.
There are approximately 24 covered bridges remaining in Lancaster County. We managed to track down six. Each had a small information board with its history. How many will you find?
![pennsylvania dutch tourism Pinetown Covered Bridge, Pennsylvania Dutch Country](https://www.expertexplorers.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Pinetown-Covered-Bridge-Pennsylvania-Dutch-Country-1024x684.jpg)
7. Learn About the Amish Way of Life
One of the most popular things to do in Pennsylvania Dutch Country is to tour an Amish village or house. The Amish Farm and House and the Amish Village are set up like museums where you can learn about the culture. In addition, there are a dozen or so tour companies that offer bus tours of the countryside and horse drawn buggy tours.
Before doing one of these tours, we recommend visiting the Mennonite Information Center , just outside of Lancaster. It’s a great place to learn about the religions and the differences between the Mennonites and Amish.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism Tobacco Farm, Pennsylvania Dutch Country](https://www.expertexplorers.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Tobacco-Farm-Pennsylvania-Dutch-Country-1024x684.jpg)
8. Shop for Amish Wares in Pennsylvania Dutch Country
From extraordinary handmade furniture to tacky tourist tat, shopping in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country is big business and a fun way to spend some of your time.
In the small town of Intercourse (yes, that is the name so enjoy the childish giggle), is Kettle Kitchen Village . With about 30 very cute boutique shops, you’ll find something for everyone on your list. Be sure to stop by the Jam & Relish Kitchen to watch them make and can the products.
Only a few miles down the road is the Bird-in-Hand Farmers Market , look for the covered wagon out front. This is a really cool market to look through. Mostly, they sell Amish products including local cheeses, meats, and sweets, but there are also a lot of housewares.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism Bird-in-the-Hand Farmers Market, Pennsylvania Dutch Country](https://www.expertexplorers.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Bird-in-the-Hand-Farmers-Market-Pennsylvania-Dutch-Country-1024x768.jpg)
9. Take the Train at Strasbourg Rail Road
There’s something exciting about a steam train, especially one with old world charm. The Strasbourg Rail Road company offers 45-minute luxury rides through the Pennsylvania countryside.
For train aficionados, they also do specialty tours of the workings of the trains. There’s a tour of the 611 cab, a tour of their mechanical shop, and even a tour on how they maintain and ready the trains.
![pennsylvania dutch tourism Train carriage at Strasburg Rail Road, Lancaster, PA](https://www.expertexplorers.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/Train-carriage-at-Strasburg-Rail-Road-Lancaster-PA-1024x684.jpg)
10. Try the Local Food
We’ve saved the best till last, or maybe the worst, you decide.
Everywhere from marketplaces to local shops and restaurants carry what are known as Amish foods. The desserts are especially popular.
We found the concoction of eggs, molasses, brown sugar, flour and shortening, known as Shoofly-pie to be over-the-top sweet. However, we did like it better than the very popular Whoopie Pies, which honestly were just gross in our opinion.
It wasn’t all bad, we promise. If you’re a foodie, check out our post on the 16 Foods to Try in Pennsylvania Dutch Country .
