The best time to visit Virginia Beach is from late May to early September, when you'll experience oceanfront culture in full swing. But fair warning: This is the peak season. The city and beach can get crowded during these months, plus room rates at beachfront hotels are generally higher between Memorial Day and Labor Day. For lower prices and relatively comfortable temps, arrive in spring (from March to mid-May) or fall (between mid-September and November). You can also save some coin if you visit in December, January or February, but you'll need to bundle up and may encounter reduced hours at select attractions .

Keep safe at the beach Swim near a lifeguard and avoid rip currents, which are recognizable by particularly foamy and choppy waters. If the conditions are especially dangerous, lifeguards will raise a red flag to keep people out of the water.

Yet more intrepid travelers will appreciate the city’s thriving cultural and arts scene, craft breweries and miles of pristine hiking trails. Whether you’re an adventure seeker, traveling with kids or just craving some down time in the sun, here are some of the best things to do in Virginia Beach. 

Embrace the kitsch on the Virginia Beach Boardwalk

Loud, bustling and lined with busy shops and restaurants overlooking the city’s wide public beach, the 3-mile-long Boardwalk is Virginia Beach at its most iconic. Stretching from 2nd to 40th streets along the Oceanfront, the Boardwalk features a dedicated bike path that’s used by cyclists and rollerbladers, along with four oceanfront stages where you can often catch live music during the warmer months. Head inland a block or two for even more restaurants, bars, arcades, mini golf courses and music venues.

Live the life aquatic at the Virginia Aquarium

The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center is home to hundreds of species ranging from seals and sea turtles to Komodo dragons, snakes and otters. Though it’s just a few miles from the city center, bucolic Pungo feels a world away. Situated in a turn-of-the-century cottage, The Bee & The Biscuit is worth the drive alone for its legendary brunch – try the Bay Crab Benedict with a mimosa flight. Get some throwback grandeur at the Cavalier Hotel

Built in 1927 and recently restored to its original grandeur, the Cavalier Hotel has hosted everyone from presidents (10 of them!) to Frank Sinatra and Elizabeth Taylor. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the fully renovated hotel and beach club houses farm-to-table restaurant Becca as well as the more rustic Hunt Room. In the hotel’s basement, Tarnished Truth Distillery has won accolades for its whiskey, moonshine and gin. If you’re staying at the hotel, you can take advantage of its South Beach–style pool and beach club. 

Browse contemporary art at MOCA

The Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art  (MOCA for short) is a non-collecting art museum – which means their gallery spaces here are always evolving. Admission is free, and new exhibitions arrive every few months. From young local upstarts to internationally acclaimed artists like sculptor Maya Lin, you’ll find work by an inspiring range of talent to peruse at MOCA.

Enjoy the view from the Cape Henry Lighthouse

Built in 1792 near the “first landing” site where English colonists disembarked en route to Jamestown, the Cape Henry Lighthouse is the fourth-oldest lighthouse in the country, and the first authorized by the US government. In fact, George Washington himself authorized the construction of the lighthouse after the Revolutionary War, with Alexander Hamilton overseeing the project. A second lighthouse was built nearby in 1881, and visitors can see both today at the Fort Story military base. The original Cape Henry lighthouse is open to the public seven days a week and can be climbed by visitors ages 5 and up.

Sip your way along the Virginia Beach Beer Trail

Whether you’re looking for a midafternoon pint or a lively night out in Virginia Beach, you’ll find plenty of local breweries to satisfy your thirst for adult beverages. Near the Oceanfront, the dog-friendly Smartmouth Pilot House operates out of a restored post office and is known for its “Nostalgically Ridiculous” series of beers – think sugary cereal in beer form. Commonwealth Brewing in Chic’s Beach has lots of outdoor space and a laid-back neighborhood vibe, while  Vibrant Shore specializes in adventurous microbrews in the Vibe District. Back Bay Brewing has two locations: an industrial-styled tasting room at the Oceanfront, and the Farmhouse , a picturesque spot with plenty of space to spread out and enjoy the surrounding gardens.

Sleep on the sand at First Landing State Park

Virginia’s most-visited state park, First Landing  boasts an impressive history dating back to 1607, when English colonists first landed here. There are legends of the pirate Blackbeard taking refuge in the park’s Narrows in the 1700s, and troops patrolled the waterways both during the War of 1812 and the Civil War. Today, it’s a refuge from the city, with 20 miles of trails and unique habitats ranging from swamps and lagoons to maritime forests. You can camp right on the beach or in one of the park’s cabins or yurts, but there is a catch: the park is located beside a military training center and visitors are warned that they may experience “unusual sights and loudness” at any time of the day or night.

Go hiking at Mount Trashmore

This park is a real dump – and that’s the beauty of it. Built in the 1960s, Mount Trashmore was the first landfill park in the US. What started out as a 640,000-ton pile of garbage is now a beloved local green space featuring two giant hills, two lakes, a water-wise garden, a skate park and an epic playground. The park is especially popular with local fitness fanatics who can be found running the perimeter trail and scaling the steep stairs. 

See what’s fresh in the Vibe Creative District

The perfect antidote to the tourist-driven Oceanfront area, Virginia Beach’s Vibe Creative District highlights the city’s thriving cultural community. Once upon a time, this was where Native American settlers lived, and it is today one of the last undeveloped parts of the Atlantic Coasts’ shore.

While you’re in False Cape State Park, you should make it a point to stop by Wash Woods, a once-busy community with lots of historic value, now lying in ruins that attract tourists and visitors.

Having been abandoned for more than eight decades, it is a mysterious town that was supposedly founded by shipwreck survivors, though no one knows for sure.

Wash Woods was a very strange location for a community, earning its name due to its tendency to become “washed by heavy storms in the area”.

It was – and still is – very secluded, which would make it hard to travel in and out of.

A cemetery and old church, as well as many houses, were built from the remains of the wrecked lumber ship the people came in.

Wash Woods grew bigger when Life-Saving Service stations were set up in the area, promoting the servicemen and their families to move into the community.

At its biggest, the little town was home to 300 or so individuals.

When a bad hurricane struck, the population slowly dwindled, and by the 1930s it was a mere ghost town – but that just makes it all the more intriguing to explore this weekend!

5. Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center

8. Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum

The Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum is dedicated to the preservation of Virginia Beach’s maritime heritage, historically showcasing statewide Oceanfront communities, and honoring the coast guards.

It teaches visitors all about how VA Beach and the Atlantic Ocean interact, from the local community to the wider significance of water-related heritage.

At the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum, there are two galleries.

They depict the history of the American Coast Guard Services as well as their predecessor, Live-Saving Services.

The galleries also shine a spotlight on Virginia Coast shipwrecks. In total, more than a thousand images and 1,800 artifacts are on display here.

Most interestingly, the Virginia Beach Surf & Rescue Museum is situated inside a genuine Life-Saving Station that dates back to 1903.

9. Military Aviation Museum

The Military Aviation Museum is what it says on the tin – a cool and interesting museum dedicated to aircraft used in and by military organizations across the world.

It’s one of the great things to do in VA Beach this weekend, boasting about 60 different aircraft, most of them flightworthy, from World War 1 and World War 2.

Interestingly, the Military Aviation Museum doesn’t aim only to display the aircraft that it finds, but also to restore them so that they can fly again, whether for airshows or to bring guests on a ride on some of them!

11. Lynnhaven House

The money used to construct the King Neptune Statue was raised at the Neptune Festival, an annual event that has been held since 1973 as one of America’s greatest festivals.

The 25-pound fluffy rabbit is the establishment’s mascot and the only non-adoptable pet onsite.

The Adam Thoroughgood House is a National Historic Landmark, and for good reason.

It’s one of Virginia Beach’s oldest remaining colonial homes, finished in 1719 by Adam Thorowgood’s great-grandson, Argall.

Adam Thorowgood, of course, was essential in the establishment of Princess Anne Country, which would grow into the city of Virginia Beach that it is now.

It’s only natural, then, that the house would be a top must-do in that very city.

The home was finished after Argall passed away by his wife, and their son would go on to add its most-loved features: a dramatic staircase, extensive paneling and wainscoting, and furnishings that reflect their son’s childhood years.

Though it faced some difficulties in staying up and well-kept, it was restored in 1957 and, despite being a small farmhouse, it’s surprisingly impressive!

The inside is packed with furniture from the 17th and 18th century and the gardens are nothing short of stunning.

Cayce had an estate in Virginia Beach, and it is here that he founded the Association for Research and Enlightenment, or the A.R.E., in 1931, with the goal of exploring the metaphysical in a scientific way.

The association structure included a hospital, which Cayce used for his patients, implementing his knowledge of nutrition, spiritual guidance, acupressure, and massages to help nurse them.

Throughout his lifetime, Cayce kept very close and accurate records of the visions that he had.

One of these visions was the famous statement that the ruins of Atlantis would be found in the Bahamas, off the Bimini coast, in 1968.

For decades, divers searched the area far and wide – and then in 1968, they found a series of limestone blocks submerged beneath the water, spanning six to eight feet in height.

However, Cayce also made several incorrect predictions – such as the conversion of China to Christianity, the dating of the Great Pyramids, and even Lindbergh kidnapping details.

Today, the Edgar Cayce A.R.E. Library is one of the region’s cool things to do.

Here, every single reading Cayce ever made – 14,306 of them! – are contained, as well as an ESP testing machine, some original manuscripts, and well-cataloged transcripts available for public viewing.

Sure, you can’t go wrong with any of these, but some of the best beaches in the world are right here in the U.S.

One of the best parts about visiting beaches in the U.S. is that no passport is required to enjoy these spectacular beaches. Pack up your favorite beach gear  and head to one of these underrated beaches while practicing the necessary safety measures this summer.

Montaña de Oro State Park

California’s Central Coast offers some of the most pristine coastlines in the entire state. For tourists, it’s an often overlooked area. which for those in the know, is a very, very good thing. Head to Montaña de Oro State Park in San Luis Obispo — seven miles of breathtaking Pacific coastline dotted with dramatic coves, panoramic bluff views, and a never-ending surf. Don’t miss the opportunity to head to the southern edge of the park, where a lesser-known path leads to beautiful Coon Creek Beach.

Sandbridge Beach

Virginia Beach is no doubt the most preeminent beach destination for visitors to the state, but there’s nothing secluded or “off the beaten path” about it — it’s a straight-up tourist town. Luckily, travelers will find the antidote just 15 miles south at Sandbridge Beach .

The sand and surf here are pristine and, surprisingly, most of the crowds know nothing of it. The adjacent Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a lovely place to explore, and nearby False Cape State Park is perfect for hiking or kayaking.

Orval Hansen Point Beach

An underrated beach in Idaho ? Yes, really. Tucked into Sawtooth National Forest on Redfish Lake is Orval Hansen Point Beach. This “gem” of a beach in the Gem State (get it?) sees plenty of visitors by Idaho standards, with weekenders coming to paddle, party, and relax on the sand. But there’s always plenty of room to spread out here.

Plan a visit during the week, especially during the spring or fall, and you’ll be surprised to find just how much shoreline you might have all to yourself. Oogling the Sawtooth Mountains from the crystal blue shoreline makes this beach unique among the others on this list.

Sombrero Beach

When most travelers think of the Florida Keys, they think of a picturesque island paradise where the daiquiris never stop flowing, and every hotel alarm clock is preprogrammed to wake you up to “Margaritaville.” That’s all (mostly) true. But, it surprises first-timers to learn that the Florida Keys are, let’s say, “lacking” in amazing beaches.

Because of the currents and general geography around the archipelago, most beaches here tend to be rocky and bland. Sombrero Beach is the rare exception. Among the Keys, it’s the closest thing you’ll find to a traditional Caribbean beach — soft white sand, mangroves, swaying palm trees, and the brilliant turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Mohegan Bluffs

They don’t call Rhode Island “The Ocean State” for nothing. Don’t let its diminutive size fool you. It boasts a staggering amount of coastline. But some of its best beaches are actually offshore. Head to Block Island (Little Rhody’s answer to Martha’s Vineyard), where much of the island is officially preserved, guaranteeing a pristine feeling to it all. Take the steep 141 wooden steps down to Mohegan Bluffs — arguably the most beautiful beach in New England and one of the best beaches in the U.S. It’s ideal for everything from sunbathing to hiking to surfing.

Ocracoke Island

Virtually everything south of Kill Devil Hills in the Outer Banks is situated along a stunning beach. But Ocracoke Island — Cape Hatteras National Seashore, in particular — tops them all. The best part about this area is that it’s difficult to get to. In fact, no matter which way you’re coming from, it requires a long car ride or a ferry ride plus a long car ride. That’s a very good thing because it’s easy to find a large swath of sand all to yourself.

Bahia Sucia

Puerto Rico boasts no shortage of stunning beaches, but Bahia Sucia tops them all. The inaccurately named “Dirty Bay” (so named for the mountains of seaweed that occasionally wash ashore during severe storms) is anything but. In just about any season and any weather, you’ll find locals here enjoying the picturesque horseshoe bay.

Situated at the end of coastal Highway 301, the landscape quickly opens up to reveal soft, beige sands and clear blue water. It’s among the most perfect postcard-worthy beaches you’ll find in the Caribbean without traveling internationally.

Windansea Beach

There’s hardly a “bad” stretch of coastline in California, and that’s even truer in and around San Diego. Among the city’s 70 miles of beaches, La Jolla’s Windansea Beach is arguably the most underrated. It’s not that it’s the most picturesque, although it does have its charms.

No, the big win here is the location. It’s far enough from the Mission Bay tourist hustle to feel plenty secluded but close enough to town for a quick day trip. The underwater reefs here are also well-known for creating consistently excellent surf breaks.

There’s no shortage of stunning, world-class beaches on every island in Hawaii , but finding a patch of sand away from the maddening crowds is a daunting task anywhere in The Aloha State. One answer can be found at the end of a secluded path along the North Shore of Kauai.

Just outside of Hanalei Bay, you’ll spot a bend in the road. Park here and take the brief, steep hike through the trees to the shoreline. The trail terminates at Lumahai Beach , a picture-perfect curve of sand and brilliant azure ocean bookended by dramatic volcanic rock outcroppings.

Second Beach

When most people think of “world-class beaches,” Washington State doesn’t often come to mind, but that’s precisely what makes it so easy to find a beach all to yourself here. Situated along the breathtaking Olympic Coast in between First and Third Beach is aptly named Second Beach . What makes this beach special is that visitors have to earn it. It’s only accessible via a winding, scenic, and relatively easy hiking trail.

The scenery here is unlike almost any other beach on this list: a mix of classic Pacific Northwest forest and rugged, rocky shoreline. Sea stacks are visible from the shore and seal and bald eagle sightings are almost guaranteed. In March/April and October, whales on their annual migrations, can often be seen from land.

Bound Brook Island

For New England beach lovers, it doesn’t get much better than Cape Cod National Seashore. Even today, the miles upon miles of dunes, soft, billowing scrub grass, and panoramic Atlantic Ocean views look much as they have for thousands of years. Most visitors head to Provincetown, Massachusetts’ “end of the line” destination, which is overrun with tourists for at least three months out of every year.

The beaches here are beautiful but can be crowded. Sidestep all that noise at Bound Brook Island. About a mile past the iconic Atwood-Higgins House is a small parking lot — blink, and you’ll miss it. Park here and follow the walkways to the shoreline. Time your visit right, and you’re likely to be the only one there.

Indian Beach

Cannon Beach is among Oregon’s most popular, heavily trafficked coastal getaways, especially in summer. Those in the know drive straight past, through Ecola State Park, and continue through a stunning forest of Sitka spruce trees. Just around the corner is Indian Beach , a quiet crescent of sand where the crowds rarely venture, and the Pacific Ocean quietly laps the shoreline. It’s a relaxed spot for a sunset stroll, investigating the many tidal pools and beachcombing for shells and driftwood.

Folly Beach

South carolina.

When it comes to coastal attractions, South Carolina has long sat in the shadow of North Carolina’s iconic Outer Banks. But the former boasts plenty of beautiful and underrated beaches. Just 10 miles from downtown Charleston, Folly Beach might feel a bit too touristy for some travelers, but it’s not without its charms. It’s a fantastic spot for all manner of watersports.

Thanks to Hurricane Hugo, the area known simply as The Washout is ground zero for surfers and foolhardy swimmers. Visitors in search of more relaxed pursuits can people- and wildlife-watch from the beach’s pier, while the town of Folly Beach is home to a string of excellent restaurants with ocean views and plenty of Lowcountry-inspired seafood fare.

St. Joseph Peninsula State Park

Among beach aficionados, South Florida’s beaches get all the love. However, the state’s panhandle offers beautiful and — most importantly — secluded beaches that rival any of its southern siblings. To dodge the booze-fueled, hard-partying atmosphere of nearby Destin and Panama City, head to lesser-known Port St. Joe, situated on the Gulf of Mexico.

An hour southeast of Panama City, St. Joseph Peninsula State Park boasts soft, sugar-white dunes that feel a thousand miles from anywhere. By day, there are plenty of hiking trails, and the wildlife watching is spectacular. After dark, bed down in one of the rental cabins and listen to the waves lapping the shoreline just feet from your door.

Naples Beach

Located on Florida’s western Gulf coast, Naples Beach is not hard to find, as it’s just across the street from some of Naples’ swanky shopping and dining districts. The 10-mile beach is a picturesque stretch of sand right on the Gulf of Mexico, and it’s not hard to see dolphins swimming just offshore. The area also features the historic Naples Pier, which once stretched 1,000 feet into the Gulf. Sadly, 2022’s Hurricane Ian destroyed all but 100 feet of the pier, but plans are in place to rebuild.

What makes Naples Beach stand out is the fact that it faces west, which means every night, there is the potential for a spectacular sunset. As the day (hopefully) cools off, bring a chair down to the beach, pack some drinks and some cheese and crackers , and watch the sun go down — you won’t be alone, trust us. And, if you’re lucky, a pelican might decide to photobomb your sunset photo, making it all the more memorable.
