Man who stole home run ball from kid breaks silence

“It was two guys trying to make a play. I obviously didn’t know he was a teen at the time."

Fan steals home run ball at Kansas City Royals game

Every now and then a fan makes a great play on a foul or home run ball that leads everyone to cheer.

Mark Kirsch was not that fan, and everyone was not cheering him, but booing and cursing his terrible behavior.

Flash back to Aug. 28, 2022 at the Kansas City Royals’ Kauffman Stadium. San Diego Padres slugger Juan Soto belted a home run. A 17-year-old fan named Bruce Williams caught the ball — only to have Kirsch snatch it out of his glove.

A TV camera captured the moment in what quickly became a viral video.

Kirsch became a pariah online, with fans calling him names and demanding he be banned from Royals games. Word that he’d offered to give Williams a jersey of former Royals pitcher Sam Gaviglio in exchange for taking the ball didn’t ease the anger many fans felt toward Kirsch.

In a recent interview with Chris Kirschner of The Athletic , Kirsch finally shared his side of the story.

To make a long story short: He has no regrets about what he did.

“It was two guys trying to make a play. I obviously didn’t know he was a teen at the time. Not that (it) matters,” Kirsch said. “It was the heat of the moment. You don’t feel anything when it’s that big of a stage. It’s Aaron Judge. It’s Juan Soto. It’s hard to describe. I thought it was in my glove. You look and it’s not there. I regret that I had a bad glove that day. It wasn’t the best glove. I had to upgrade.”

Kirsch has been hawking home runs for years, having caught homers off the bat of everyone from Barry Bonds to Mike Trout. He conceded he needs to be more careful in similar situations.

“Bill Buckner, the ball goes through his legs but the guy got to 2,500 hits,” Kirsch said. “It’s the one error that he’s remembered for. Since then, I’ve realized how I needed to be better but mindful of everyone who’s around me.”

The Royals soothed Williams’ pain to some degree, giving him a baseball signed by shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., along with some bobbleheads.

Hateful hipster steals grand slam ball out of young boy's glove Back to video

A beanie-wearing hipster was captured on camera ripping a home run ball out of a young fan’s glove Sunday during the Kansas City Royals 15-7 romp over the Padres at Kauffman Stadium.

The blast came courtesy of Juan Soto, who hit a grand slam in the seventh inning.

On the game’s broadcast, the man — wearing a spandex shirt, natch — collided with the young Royals fan adorned in the team’s hat and a matching T-shirt.

The blast seemed to land in the boy’s glove before our heroic hipster snatched it. The boy and another youth appeared stunned as beanie man ran off with his ball.

That guy’s a regular at Northwest league games. He does the same thing except he usually just camps outside of the stadiums and picks up everything that leaves the parks. He allegedly broke someone’s arm in Everett, WA tackling him for a ball. He’s a former Savannah banana. — Justice Brilliant (@JMNSB15) August 29, 2022

According to the New York Post, former Royals minor-league hurler Daniell Tillo said the millennial moron did the “exact same thing” at a baseball game last week in Oregon.

But the Post reports that the ball thief seemed to drop a homer from Nick Pratto in the bottom of the fourth inning.

According to online reports, the ball thief is allegedly some kind of entertainer named Mark Kirsch, who is a Padres fan. He does something called Man vs. Impossible.

The happy ending is that the Royals were mortified when they learned about the incident and loaded up the kid with plenty of swag and other goodies.

Yellow Fever Vaccine & Malaria Prevention Information, by Country

Cdc yellow book 2024.

Author(s): Mark Gershman, Rhett Stoney (Yellow Fever) Holly Biggs, Kathrine Tan (Malaria)

The following pages present country-specific information on yellow fever (YF) vaccine requirements and recommendations, and malaria transmission information and prevention recommendations. Country-specific maps are included to aid in interpreting the information. The information in this chapter was accurate at the time of publication; however, it is subject to change at any time due to changes in disease transmission or, in the case of YF, changing entry requirements for travelers. Updated information reflecting changes since publication can be found in the online version of this book and on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Travelers’ Health website. Recommendations for prevention of other travel-associated illnesses can also be found on the CDC Travelers’ Health website .

Yellow Fever Vaccine

Entry requirements.

Entry requirements for proof of YF vaccination under the International Health Regulations (IHR) differ from CDC’s YF vaccination recommendations. Under the IHR, countries are permitted to establish YF vaccine entry requirements to prevent the importation and transmission of YF virus within their boundaries. Certain countries require proof of vaccination from travelers arriving from all countries ( Table 5-25 ); some countries require proof of vaccination only for travelers above a certain age coming from countries with risk for YF virus transmission. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines areas with risk for YF virus transmission as countries or areas where YF virus activity has been reported currently or in the past, and where vectors and animal reservoirs exist.

Unless issued a medical waiver by a yellow fever vaccine provider, travelers must comply with entry requirements for proof of vaccination against YF.

WHO publishes a list of YF vaccine country entry requirements and recommendations for international travelers approximately annually. But because entry requirements are subject to change at any time, health care professionals and travelers should refer to the online version of this book and the CDC Travelers’ Health website for any updates before departure.

CDC Recommendations

CDC’s YF vaccine recommendations are guidance intended to protect travelers from acquiring YF virus infections during international travel. These recommendations are based on a classification system for destination-specific risk for YF virus transmission: endemic, transitional, low potential for exposure, and no risk ( Table 2-08 ). CDC recommends YF vaccination for travel to areas classified as having endemic or transitional risk (Maps 5-10 and 5-11 ). Because of changes in YF virus circulation, however, recommendations can change; therefore, before departure, travelers and clinicians should check CDC’s destination pages for up-to-date YF vaccine information.

Duration of Protection

In 2015, the US Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices published a recommendation that 1 dose of YF vaccine provides long-lasting protection and is adequate for most travelers. The recommendation also identifies specific groups of travelers who should receive additional doses, and others for whom additional doses should be considered (see Sec. 5, Part 2, Ch. 26, Yellow Fever ). In July 2016, WHO officially amended the IHR to stipulate that a completed International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis is valid for the lifetime of the vaccinee, and YF vaccine booster doses are not necessary. Moreover, countries cannot require proof of revaccination (booster) against YF as a condition of entry, even if the traveler’s last vaccination was >10 years ago.

Ultimately, when deciding whether to vaccinate travelers, clinicians should take into account destination-specific risks for YF virus infection, and individual risk factors (e.g., age, immune status) for serious YF vaccine–associated adverse events, in the context of the entry requirements. See Sec. 5, Part 2, Ch. 26, Yellow Fever , for a full discussion of YF disease and vaccination guidance.

Table 2-08 Yellow fever (YF) vaccine recommendation categories 1

Malaria prevention.

The following recommendations to protect travelers from malaria were developed using the best available data from multiple sources. Countries are not required to submit malaria surveillance data to CDC. On an ongoing basis, CDC actively solicits data from multiple sources, including WHO (main and regional offices); national malaria control programs; international organizations; CDC overseas offices; US military; academic, research, and aid organizations; and the published scientific literature. The reliability and accuracy of those data are also assessed.

If the information is available, trends in malaria incidence and other data are considered in the context of malaria control activities within a given country or other mitigating factors (e.g., natural disasters, wars, the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic) that can affect the ability to control malaria or accurately count and report it. Factors such as the volume of travel to that country and the number of acquired cases reported in the US surveillance system are also examined. In developing its recommendations, CDC considers areas within countries where malaria transmission occurs, substantial occurrences of antimalarial drug resistance, the proportions of species present, and the available malaria prophylaxis options.

Clinicians should use these recommendations in conjunction with an individual risk assessment and consider not only the destination but also the detailed itinerary, including specific cities, types of accommodations, season, and style of travel, as well as special health conditions (e.g., pregnancy). Several medications are available for malaria prophylaxis. When deciding which drug to use, consider the itinerary and length of trip, travelers’ previous adverse reactions to antimalarials, drug allergies, medical history, and drug costs. For a thorough discussion of malaria and guidance for prophylaxis, see Sec. 5, Part 3, Ch. 16, Malaria .

Map 2-12 Malaria prevention in Panama

1 Current as of November 2022. This is an update of the 2010 map created by the Informal WHO Working Group on the Geographic Risk of Yellow Fever.

2 Refers to Plasmodium falciparum malaria, unless otherwise noted.

3 Tafenoquine can cause potentially life-threatening hemolysis in people with glucose-6-phosphate-dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency. Rule out G6PD deficiency with a quantitative laboratory test before prescribing tafenoquine to patients.

4 Mosquito avoidance includes applying topical mosquito repellant, sleeping under an insecticide-treated mosquito net, and wearing protective clothing (e.g., long pants and socks, long-sleeve shirt). For additional details on insect bite precautions, see Sec. 4, Ch. 6, Mosquitoes, Ticks & Other Arthropods.

5 Primaquine can cause potentially life-threatening hemolysis in people with G6PD deficiency. Rule out G6PD deficiency with a quantitative laboratory test before prescribing primaquine to patients.

6 P. knowlesi is a malaria species with a simian (macaque) host. Human cases have been reported from most countries in Southwest Asia and are associated with activities in forest or forest-fringe areas. P. knowlesi has no known resistance to antimalarials.

2 In 2017, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) expanded its YF vaccination recommendations for travelers going to Brazil because of a large YF outbreak in multiple states in that country. Please refer to the CDC  Travelers’ Health website for more information and updated recommendations.

3 YF vaccination is generally not recommended for travel to areas where the potential for YF virus exposure is low. Vaccination might be considered, however, for a small subset of travelers going to these areas who are at increased risk for exposure to YF virus due to prolonged travel, heavy exposure to mosquitoes, or inability to avoid mosquito bites. Factors to consider when deciding whether to vaccinate a traveler include destination-specific and travel-associated risks for YF virus infection; individual, underlying risk factors for having a serious YF vaccine–associated adverse event; and destination entry requirements.

Buffalo-Area Operating Engineers Ex-President Sentenced for Racketeering

Union Corruption Update has described this case more than once. Federal and state agents arrested about a dozen IUOE Local 17 leaders and members during predawn hours of April 8, 2008 and charged them with extortion and racketeering. For a decade, the Lake View (Erie County), N.Y.-based union inflicted fear and retribution upon various nonunion Buffalo-area contractors and crew members. Encouraged by their bosses, union members engaged in threats or acts of property destruction and violence. Any nonunion construction site was fair game. Facilitating this campaign was the union’s access to personal information through the data base of the New York Department of Motor Vehicles. The feds eventually became aware of all this. And a half-decade of investigation yielded arrests and a 62-page indictment detailing 75 criminal acts during the period 1997-2007. Though defense lawyers praised their clients as local folk heroes, the evidence suggested a tough road ahead swaying even a partisan jury.

Mark Kirsch, by various accounts, not only was aware of the terror campaign, but approved it and likely even took part in it. And there were witnesses ready to testify to that effect. Seven of the 12 defendants named in the original and two superseding indictments pleaded guilty. Kirsch and four other defendants pleaded not guilty. The trial for the latter group began in January 2014 and lasted eight weeks. During testimony, Kirsch proclaimed his innocence. He said that he was aware of only five instances of vandalism, and in those he disciplined the perpetrators. Dozens of union members, nonunion employees and contractors, however, in sworn statements, contradicted these claims. In the end, the jury convicted Kirsch , but acquitted union business agents Gerald Bove and Thomas Freedenburg, and members Michael Caggiano and Kenneth Edbauer. Kirsch had 14 days in which to file an appeal, but did not do so. Operating Engineers Local 17 has been under new management these past several years. The sentencing of Kirsch puts to bed the final piece of unfinished business.

“I had Mark Kirsch as my photographer July 2013 and we were very happy with the beautiful photos he took! He came to the hair salon and started taking pictures at 9am. He also went to take photos of the groom and groomsmen while they got ready. Mark stayed at the reception until the very end taking pictures! We liked the fact that you don't even realize you're being photographed so the pictures look so natural. Mark has creative ideas, but he is also willing to do whatever you want him to.” Lindsey P. Strapped to an 18-wheeler, pulling it across a runway at Windsor Airport as easily and you might move a wheel barrow full of dirt down your driveway, Mark Kirsch is undaunted by the challenge. “We need more weight,” Kirsch remarks as he quickly tugs the 40,000-pound truck 100 feet in a matter of seconds. You might wonder how a guy finds out his niche is as someone who pulls airplanes. For Kirsch, a laid-back sort who smiles often and clearly enjoys the challenge he accepts, the path to his unique career choice was a simple case of needing to pull his weight. And then some. “I just ran out of weight to lift at the gym, and I needed to lift more weight,” Kirsch explained. The 6-foot-4, 280-pound strongman from Seattle will be a star attraction Saturday at the Windsor Air Show, where he is slated to pull a semi truck and a World War II Lancaster bomber. As he wrapped up his practice session Friday with the 18-wheeler, his next mission had just completed its landing at the airport, immediately catching Kirsch’s eye. “I can’t wait for the Lancaster,” he said as he spied the big plane on a nearby runway. “I can’t wait to get over there and tackle that.”  Kirsch was equally intrigued by the history of the plane. “That’s an honour to be a part of that,” he said. “These other planes that I pull, they’re a dime a dozen.” Outfitted in leg guards that protect his muscles from exploding and specially-designed Adidas shoes that he figures last him two pulls before they need to be replaced, Kirsch envisions plenty of challenges involved with his Saturday pulls. “This is asphalt, it’s not concrete,” Kirsch said of the runway surface. Asphalt tends to be more slippery and grip can become an issue. “You’ve got asphalt and it gets warm, especially with that big bird over there – I’ve never pulled anything with tires that big – so we’ll see on that.” Generally, he works with jumbo jets, and is the only man to successfully pull a Boeing 767 for 100 feet, which Kirsch sets as his personal standard to consider a pull as complete. He puts in eight hours of daily training to gain the strength necessary for such exertion. “I don’t talk to people, don’t take breaks, except for a sip of water here and there,” he said. “Just constantly lift weights.” Kirsch, 29, started pulling planes four years ago. “A lot of people said, ‘Nobody could do it.’ I guess I kind of blazed some trails,” he said. Kirsch vows that he’s never taken a steroid or supplement of any kind to help him build up his body. “My body’s trained for this,” Kirsch said. He’s studied physics and kinesiology and pays strict attention to nutrition. He eats 5-7 pounds of salmon a day because the omegas in the fish help keeps his joints lubricated. “There’s a lot of flexibility, a lot of stretching involved,” Kirsch said. “You do two of these a day and your body’s done. I metabolize a lot of calories when I’m pulling an airplane, so I eat a lot of protein and a lot of carbs. I do it right, and I do it naturally, so I don’t see any reason why I can’t keep doing this into my 50s. He’s hoping for a large crowd of supporters as he tackles the pulls in front of him this weekend. I’ve got to have it loud,” Kirsch said. “I’ve done a lot of pulls this month, close to a million pounds of pulls – I’m actually going over that number, just in August – so when I’m fatigued, I just want to stop. But when you’ve got the crowd here and they’re cheering loud, it gets the adrenaline going, and that pumps me up.”

We think of memories as the imprint of a singular event, but that’s not always the truth. Often memories are an amalgam of multiple occurrences of multiple events, which get laid one over another to form a blurry but distinct image in the mind’s eye.

Top American Express Card Reviews

American Express offers some of the best credit cards on the market. You can expect luxurious travel experiences,  purchase protections and benefits, and valuable rewards redeemable for some of the best flights and hotels in the world.

Narrowing down a list of top picks was hard for our expert team — but these are the best credit cards of 2024, as chosen by Business Insider's credit card experts.

Best for Frequent Travelers: Amex Platinum Card

At $695 a year, the Amex Platinum Card has one of the highest annual fees of any mainstream card. However, as long as you're willing to float it up front, you can get way more value back from the card — for instance, it's possible to get more than $2,000 in value from it during your first year.

The Amex Platinum Card offers 5 points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with the airline, as well as flights and pre-paid hotels booked through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year, then 1x). It earns 1 point per dollar on everything else.

The card comes with a long list of perks, including access to more than 1,400 airport lounges within the Priority Pass ** network, as well as Delta Sky Clubs (when you're flying Delta) and proprietary Amex Centurion Lounges . It also offers complimentary Gold elite status with Marriott and Hilton hotels**, as well as up to $100 per year in shopping credits at Saks Fifth Avenue **, up to $200 in Uber credits ** each cardmember year, and access to special events. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is a premium credit card that is also very popular, so you may want to compare the Amex Platinum and the Chase Sapphire Reserve before making a final decision.

*No Preset Spending Limit means your spending limit is flexible. Unlike a traditional card with a set limit, the amount you can spend adapts based on factors such as your purchase, payment, and credit history.

The Platinum Card® from American Express also comes with benefits such as up to $300 annually in Equinox credits **, $189 per year in credits for CLEAR® Plus membership **, up to $200 per year in  credits toward eligible prepaid hotel bookings , up to $240 in annual credits toward eligible digital subscriptions **, and credits for Walmart+ memberships** and SoulCycle at-home bike purchases**.

Best for Dining Rewards: Amex Gold Card

The Amex Gold Card is one of the best cards for dining , unless you're only interested in cash back, rather than potentially more valuable rewards points.

The Amex Gold Card earns 4 points per dollar at restaurants and on up to $25,000 per calendar year at US supermarkets (and 1 point per dollar after that), 3 points per dollar on flights booked directly with the airline, and 1 point per dollar on everything else. Based on the fact that you can easily redeem Membership Rewards points for more than 1 cent of value each, this is the highest-earning card for everything food-related.

Here's another reason to consider the Amex Gold card: It adds up to $120 of dining credits** — split into up to $10 each month — at Grubhub, Seamless, The Cheesecake Factory, Milk Bar, Wine.com, Goldbelly, or participating Shake Shack locations. It also offers up to $120 Uber Cash (up to $10 per month credits) each calendar year (this is only applicable to U.S. Eats orders and Rides, and the Gold Card needs to be added to the Uber app to receive the Uber Cash benefit).

Best for Cash Back: Amex Blue Cash Preferred Card

If you're less excited about earning Membership Rewards points — which can be valuable, but also require some effort to redeem for maximum value — and want to stick with cash back, the Amex Blue Cash Preferred Card is the best option, even with an annual fee of $0 intro for the first year, then $95.

You'll earn 6% cash back on select U.S. streaming services and 3% back on all transit. That's in addition to 6% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 in purchases per calendar year (and 1% after that), 3% back at U.S. gas stations, and 1% cash back on everything else (cash back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as statement credits or at Amazon.com checkout).

You'll also get the following statement credits:

  • $7 monthly credit when paying for a Disney Bundle subscription costing $9.99 or more with your card**. This is up to $84 in annual value.

The Amex Blue Cash Preferred Card offers a 0% intro APR for 12 months on purchases and balance transfers from the date of account opening, before switching to a 19.24% - 29.99% Variable APR.

The Amex Blue Cash Preferred Card comes with a handful of travel and purchase protections as well. Cash back comes in the form of a statement credit or can be applied at Amazon.com checkout, so effectively you can use it to "erase" purchases.

Best for Transit: Amex Green Card

The Amex Green Card has become a top option for earning Membership Rewards points on travel and dining, but it's also a great choice for commuters because its travel categories include subways, ferries, taxis, buses, trains, and even tolls and parking fees. And it's currently offering its highest welcome bonus offer ever: 60,000 points after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first six months of card membership and earn 20% back on eligible travel and transit purchases, up to a total of $200 back, made during your first six months of card membership. However, this offer will only be available for a limited time, so this is your last chance to earn it.

You'll earn 3 points per dollar on all eligible travel, which includes everything from subway fares to hotels to flights. You'll earn 3 points per dollar on transit such as trains, taxicabs, rideshare services, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, and subways. You'll also earn 3 points per dollar at restaurants worldwide. In terms of points-earning, this puts the Amex Green Card on par with the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, which also offers 3 points per dollar in these spending categories (when purchases are not made through Chase Travel℠).

Other benefits include up to $189 in statement credits toward CLEAR® Plus membership each year**, and up to $100 in statement credits per year toward LoungeBuddy purchases** (for airport lounge access).

The Amex Green card has a $150 annual fee, but that's relatively moderate, especially if you can take advantage of those two annual statement credits.

Great Bonus Categories for Families: Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card

The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card is a strong option for anyone looking for a Membership Rewards card, but who's not interested in a premium card like the Platinum or the Amex Gold. It also has a strong points-earning scheme and a lower annual fee of $95.

The card earns 3 points per dollar spent at U.S. supermarkets (up to $6,000 each calendar year — 1 point per dollar after that), 2 points per dollar at U.S. gas stations, and 1 point per dollar on everything else. You can also get 2 points per dollar on reservations made through Amex Travel.

Best of all, if you make 30 or more purchases in a billing period, you'll earn a 50% bonus. That means that those little $3 and $4 charges for things like coffee or a snack can help you get a ton of points quickly.

The card also offers a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers (made in the first 60 days) for 12 months from the date of account opening, before switching to a 15.99% - 25.99% Variable APR. If you have a big purchase coming up and want some time to pay it off, but don't want to pay interest fees, this is a great option.

Best For No Annual Fee: Amex EveryDay® Credit Card

The Amex EveryDay® Credit Card is a no-annual-fee version of the Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card — and it still offers solid rewards. It earns 2 points per dollar at U.S. supermarkets (again, up to $6,000 of purchases per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar after that) and at AmexTravel.com, and 1 point per dollar on everything else. It also offers 20% more points when you make 20 or more purchases in a billing period.

Like most Amex cards, it features a few travel and purchase protections, as well as access to the Amex Offers program.

While most people will be better off with the Amex Preferred, the Amex EveryDay card is still a strong option, especially since there's no annual fee.

Best Card With an Intro APR Offer: Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card

The Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card is similar to the Amex Blue Cash Preferred Card, with a different earning structure and no annual fee.

The card earns a lower 3% cash back at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 each calendar year (then 1%), 3% back at U.S. gas stations on up to $6,000 each calendar year in purchases (then 1%), 3% back on online retail purchases on up to $6,000 each calendar year (then 1%), and 1% cash back on everything else (cash back is received in the form of Reward Dollars that can be redeemed as statement credits or at Amazon.com checkout). While many people spend enough in the bonus categories to make the Blue Cash Preferred the better option, this remains a decent card for anyone who's strictly opposed to paying an annual fee.

If you're looking to make a major purchase and pay it off over time, like an appliance or an engagement ring, you can take advantage of the 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months from account opening (after that, it reverts to a 19.24% - 29.99% Variable APR). You'll earn cash back on the purchase, which you can put right towards paying it off.

This card also offers the following statement credits:

  • $15 monthly credit towards your Home Chef subscription** (up to $180 in credit per year).

American Express Card Frequently Asked Questions

The Platinum Card® from American Express is one of the best cards for frequent flyers because cardholders earn 5x on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel. If you commute to and from work, the American Express® Green Card also earns rewards on travel but includes trains, subways, taxis, rideshares, and other forms of public transit in its bonus categories.

The Platinum Card® from American Express offers the best rewards, but also comes with a hefty annual fee.

Yes, the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card does not have an annual fee.

Consider your spending habits, the rewards and benefits you value most, and any applicable fees when evaluating credit cards. Choose the card that hits the right sweet spot for all of your preferences and needs.

The Platinum Card® from American Express is one of the best-known cards for consumer luxury benefits. But the invite-only Amex Centurion card — colloquially called "the Black Card," is the most prestigious American Express product. Reports vary, but most unofficial sources suggest that candidates must spend at least $500,000 on Amex cards each year to be considered.

You can have up to five Amex cards at one time, including both personal and business cards. This figure does not include the cards with which there isn't a fixed credit limit, however. Cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express and American Express® Gold Card will not count against this five-card limit.

The Amex Centurion Black Card , or more formally, the Centurion® Card from American Express, is an invitation-only card with a $10,000 initiation fee and an annual fee of $5,000. We didn't consider the Black Card for this best-of list, since it isn't an option for most consumers.

American Express does issue debit cards through the American Express Serve family of cards. With these prepaid debit cards, you can effectively deposit money onto your card and use it as a checking account of sorts. These cards do not require a credit inquiry to open, though they do come with nominal monthly fees.

American Express issues several metal cards — primarily those with higher annual fees. The Platinum Card® from American Express and The Business Platinum Card® from American Express are the heaviest and most impressive. Other cards, even co-branded credit cards, also contain metal in between two sheets of plastic.

The security code, or CVV number , on American Express cards, is a four-digit number located on the front of your card on the right-hand side. Amex cards still come with a three-digit code on the back (similar to other card issuers), but you'll usually only need that for activating your card.

No, American Express doesn't currently offer secured credit cards . However, many other banks do — you can find the top secured options in these guides to the best credit cards for bad credit and best secured credit cards .

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Chose the Best American Express Cards

We considered Amex-branded cards and co-branded airline and hotel cards that are currently available to new applicants and looked at several factors:

  • Simplicity  — Does the card offer an easy-to-use rewards program and redemption options? Are there any restrictions to navigate?
  • Earning potential — Are there generous spending categories or a strong rewards rate across all purchases, and is there a welcome bonus offer?
  • Annual fee — No-annual-fee cards are appealing, but if the card charges an annual fee, does it offer benefits that justify the cost?
  • Options for different types of consumers  — We made sure to include cards that are geared to various users, from cards with a 0% APR offer to travel points and cash-back cards.
