"The scenery was spectacular, our guide and fellow tourists were great. However, the trip itself was grueling, in large part because the bus was cramped and getting in and out was difficult. The small bus held a max of 20. Two of the seats were over the rear wheels, making them pretty much impossible to use. There were 17 of us, so we had no room to spread out. The seats were narrow with little leg room. There is more room in economy class on a plane. The roads were for the most part fairly smooth, but any bump was bone-jarring in the back of the bus. There were small overhead storage shelves, but not enough for all our day bags, so I had to squeeze my bag by my feet. The seatbelts were very difficult to fasten in such tight quarters. I think most of us gave up. The door to the bus was narrow, with a big first step and a very narrow second step. To get a good footing, my foot had to be sideways on this step. We spent probably five hours or more on the bus each day, getting on and off multiple times, which compounded the difficulties. Fortunately, I brought an inflatable seat cushion, which literally saved my butt! Our luggage was towed in a trailer, which lost its back panel on a rough road under construction. Fortunately, someone noticed before any of the luggage fell out. Ours was the only bus with a trailer, which leads me to believe the other tour buses had more room for passengers and tourists. On the day of the optional glacier hike, I thought there would be other alternatives for the rest of us who did not go. However, we spent around five hours at an isolated visitor center/cafeteria with some hiking trails waiting for the few who went on the glacier hike to return. My husband and I are in our 70s, and I asked Tour Radar how strenuous this tour would be. The reply was "easy." It was not. We could choose not to fully participate in some of the activities, e.g., climbing to the top of a waterfall. But we had no choice regarding the challenges of our transportation. I don't know how I can assure myself that the same will not happen again if I book another tour. On a different note--I have a suggestion regarding the itinerary. I could not necessarily tell from the written description what special gear I might need on any given day. When we stopped to see the waterfall with a path behind it, our guide warned us we would be wet if we went there. I could also see that path was on a slope. Our waterproof slickers and hiking boots were in our luggage wedged in the trailer, so for safety’s sake, we did not go behind the falls. I suggest that guides tell tourists what they might need the night before so we can be better prepared.

"The venues selected for the tour were nteresting. This is a good self guiding tour as we had plenty of driving time (hours and hours each day) where the guide didn't speak. No music either, just silence. That left us researching Iceland history and stories online. The hotel selected and owned by the tour company was comfortable. It was far from any other business so you have to eat your dinner there. Good news is dinner was very good.

"Overall, the tour was awesome. The first 6 days with our tour guide Nick were the best. Nick was very informative about Iceland. He was very personable and made us feel like it was important for us to be a tourist in Iceland. He knows so much about the country and shared his knowledge. The first 6 days went very well. What we didn't know was that the 8-day tour we signed up for was broken down into 6 days with the entire group and 2 1-day tours on the last 2 days. The tour guides that picked us up didn't know we had luggage on the last 2 days. They made it doable but there was a disconnect in the communication between the tour group and the tour guides.

FAQs about vacations to Iceland

Is it worth going to iceland.

Yes, it’s absolutely worth going to Iceland! This volcanic island nation in the middle of the North Atlantic has got mind-bending nature in spades.

First up, there’s gushing geysers, steaming hot springs, and otherworldly lava fields. Then you’ve got thundering waterfalls , gigantic glaciers , and serene glacial lagoons. All these incredible sights are framed by Iceland’s beautiful mountains and fjords.

Is it safe in Iceland?

Yes! Iceland is one of the safest countries on Earth . Thanks to its extremely low crime rate and excellent healthcare system, you can relax and enjoy your vacation with peace of mind.

Around the country, you’ll see children left to their own devices to happily play outside or walk to school by themselves. Iceland is a fantastic place for kids to run wild, totally carefree! This means that the country is a great destination for a family trip.

Is Iceland expensive?

Iceland has a reputation as a pricey destination, but it doesn’t have to be! One trick to save money is to book an Iceland vacation package. That way, you don’t have to organize everything yourself either.

When you book a package with Iceland Tours, you get great value for money. All of our vacations to Iceland include:

  • Transport and accommodation
  • Detailed itinerary made by local travel experts
  • Free Wi-Fi in your car or on your bus
  • Access to our 24/7 helpline when you’re in Iceland
  • Breakfast every day (excluding camping trips)

If you choose an Iceland adventure package , you’ll also get activities like ice cave tours and lava caving built into the price. And Christmas and New Year packages even include some evening meals.

For more tips on how to save money on your trip, see this Iceland budgeting guide .

How many days do you need for an Iceland trip?

There’s no set number of days for a vacation to Iceland. Trips of different lengths will give you totally different experiences!

With 3–5 days in Iceland, you can base yourself in Reykjavík and join day tours to the Golden Circle or south coast . You’ll be able to see the top highlights of Icelandic nature and explore the city in the evenings.

If you spend around a week in Iceland, you could focus on touring a specific region in depth. For example, follow the south coast all the way to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon . Or head over to West Iceland and the Snæfellsnes peninsula .

This amount of time would also be enough for a Ring Road tour . That said, with 10–14 days in Iceland, you have the time to go slower and see more. As well as the Ring Road, you might want to include the lesser-visited Westfjords region .

With 2 weeks or more, you’ll have the time to see every part of the country, including the Westman Islands and highland interior.

What is the best month to visit Iceland?

The answer to this question depends on what you want to see! Iceland has tons to offer in summer and winter .

In the summer months of June , July , and August , days are longer and you can pack more into your itinerary. At the start of the season, you can see the midnight sun. Summer is the most popular time to visit, as the majority of attractions, as well as the highlands region, are open.

There’s more darkness in the winter months of November , December , January , and February . This provides the perfect backdrop for chasing down the Northern Lights . Winter’s also great for seeing Iceland’s frosty beauty.

If you want to visit at a quieter time of year, the spring shoulder season of March , April , and May is ideal. There’ll be fewer travelers about then, but still plenty to see! Toward the end of the season, Iceland is starting to turn green again.

The autumn shoulder season is September to October . While not as quiet as spring, it’s still more laid back than the summer. Winter hasn’t truly set in either, so most attractions are still fully open.

What kind of Iceland trips do you offer?

With Iceland Tours, you can choose from a whole bunch of travel styles. Our most popular are self-drive tours of Iceland , where you take the wheel of your own rental car. On a road trip, you can stop as often as you like and go wherever your heart takes you.

If you’d rather skip the driving, you can join a multi-day tour . You’ll stay in Reykjavík and take day trips by bus to different attractions out of town. If you want to take it up a level, you could go for a guided group tour . A dedicated local guide will lead your group around the country. A great way to make new travel buddies!

Alternatively, you could go for a private guided tour . Your very own driver-guide will use their expert knowledge of Iceland to show you all sorts of hidden gems.

At the other end of the scale are camping trips . You get a rental car and camping gear included, and you’ll sleep under the midnight sun. It’s harder to get much closer to nature than that.

Then there are day trips if you’re already in Iceland and want to add another experience to your itinerary.

Can I rent a car in Iceland?

To hire a rental car in Iceland, you’ll need to be at least 20 years old, or 23 years old for jeeps or vans. You’ll also need to have held your driver’s license for at least 1 year. To confirm the booking and pay your holding deposit, you’ll also need a credit card.

If you’re from the EU, United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, you can drive in Iceland with your driver’s license from home.

For all the details, see our car rental page . And see our Travel Guide if you’re after tips on how to drive in Iceland .

What kind of accommodation do you offer?

For most travel styles, you can choose from 3 levels of accommodation:

  • Budget – Guesthouses and country hotels, with shared bathrooms
  • Comfort – Hotels or guesthouses of around 3 stars, with private bathrooms
  • Quality – Hotels or guesthouses of around 4 stars, with private bathrooms

With some travel styles, you might have more limited options available. For example, we only offer Comfort or Quality accommodation on our private tours of Iceland .

If you go for a camping trip , guesthouse or hotel accommodation is included for the nights you spend in Reykjavík. For the nights when you’ll camp, we provide you with a tent, sleeping bags, and all the other gear you need.

For all our guesthouse and hotel stays, breakfast is always included no matter which level you pick. Get more info about places to stay on this Iceland accommodation guide .

Are flights included with your packages?

So that you get the best deal and most flexibility, we don’t include flights with our packages. Once you have a rough idea of when you want to travel, you can start searching for flights to Iceland.

Thanks to its location in the North Atlantic, Iceland is well served by direct flights from lots of European countries and North America. If you’re coming from further afield, you’ll probably need a connecting flight.

How do I book with Iceland Tours?

Start your booking by checking out the Iceland vacation packages on this page. To narrow your search, filter by your preferred season, travel style, budget, and any attractions you want to see.

Click the heart icon to favorite any packages you’d like to come back to later. That way, you can compare itineraries to firm up your Iceland travel plans.

Once you’ve found the vacation for you, simply follow the steps on the package page to book online. On our website you can:

  • Choose your dates and add more days
  • Select your rental car* and accommodation level
  • Add extra activities and day trips
  • Pay a 5% deposit to secure your trip

If you need help with your booking, use the live chat option on our website.

*Applies to self-drive and camping trips only.

Can I choose my travel dates?

For the following travel styles, you’re free to choose any start date you like:

  • Self-drive tours
  • Camping tours
  • Multi-day tours
  • Private tours

The itineraries for these tours are of a fixed length, but you can add extra days in Reykjavík at the start or end of your trip at checkout. That way you can make your Iceland vacation last even longer!

Guided group tours have fixed departures. That said, we have a large number of dates on offer, both in summer and winter. So you’re bound to find one that works for you.

Can I customize my Iceland vacation?

Absolutely! Depending on which travel style you choose, you have different customization options.

For self-drive Iceland trips, you can pick your accommodation type and rental car. You can also add bonus activities to fill up your spare time, and more nights in Reykjavík to the start or end of your trip.

For Iceland multi-day tours, you can pick your accommodation level and add some extra activities such as a trip to the Blue Lagoon (if it’s not already included in your package). Extra nights in Reykjavík are an option here too.

Other travel styles, like guided group tours of Iceland, might have more limited customization options due to the nature of the trip. You’ll be able to see all the options available to you at checkout.

Good to know: Although we can’t guarantee stays at specific hotels or guesthouses, we’ll always make sure that you get the standard of accommodation that you pay for. Read more about accommodation types .

If you’d like to make further customizations than those that are available to you at checkout, get in touch and we’d be happy to help. The additional charge for this service is €150. Just so you know, it might not be possible to accommodate further customizations during the summer season. See our terms and conditions for full details.

When should I book?

As a rule of thumb, it’s best to book at least a few weeks before you plan to travel. For availability reasons, we’re unable to book trips with less than 1 week’s notice.

For the summer season, it’s a good idea to book a few months ahead of when you plan to travel. This is the most popular time of year to visit Iceland and places to stay can be limited in more remote areas.

If you’re planning to join a guided group tour, we recommend booking a few months in advance. Departures are on fixed dates and the most popular ones can get booked up.

Do I need a passport or visa to travel to Iceland?

If you’re a citizen of the EEA, you can travel to Iceland using your passport or national identity card visa-free. Otherwise, you’ll need a valid passport with at least 3 months left on it before expiry.

Citizens of many countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand can travel to Iceland for up to 90 days visa-free. Check the Icelandic Directorate of Immigration’s visa-free travel list to find out if you’re eligible.

If you do need a visa, let us know once we’ve confirmed your booking and we can send you a confirmation letter for your visa application.

What should I pack for my trip to Iceland?

As its name suggests, Iceland can be quite a chilly country! That said, it’s warmer than many parts of the world on a similar latitude.

Of course, it pays to come prepared. So here’s a list of everything you should pack for an Iceland trip:

  • Sturdy, comfortable hiking boots
  • Thermal underlayers
  • Fleece or sweater
  • Waterproof rainjacket
  • Warm winter coat
  • Gloves, hat, and scarf
  • Sunglasses (both in winter and summer)
  • Swimming gear
  • Moisturizer and lip balm

The main thing to keep in mind is the wind. Although it’s milder in the summer, wind is a constant fixture of the Icelandic weather. With plenty of layers and skincare products though, it shouldn’t get in the way of adventure!

See this Iceland winter packing guide for more tips.

The Best Iceland Tours

With terrain shaped by volcanic eruptions and shifting tectonic plates and the surrounding waters filled with glaciers, icebergs and whales, Iceland is like no other place on Earth. It's also an ideal spot to observe a seasonal phenomenon above the Earth: the northern lights  (or aurora borealis).

The following Iceland tours, determined by U.S. News to be the best available thanks to expert input and traveler sentiment, provide ideal ways of experiencing all that this extraordinary place has to offer. All of these excursions are conducted by knowledgeable guides eager to share their insights into their country's special features.

Ice Lagoon Adventure Tours – Zodiac Boat Tour

Price: Adults from 14,900 Icelandic króna (about $108); kids from 8,900 króna (about $65) Duration: 75 minutes

Explore the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon – part of Vatnajökull National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to Europe's largest glacier – aboard an inflatable rigid boat on this expedition. In addition to icebergs and the glacial wall, you might also spot wildlife like seals and various bird species. Tourgoers consistently describe the guides as passionate and knowledgeable, and say photo opportunities abound. Trips are available from May through October several times a day, with departures in both the morning and the afternoon. The park containing the lagoon sits in the southeast part of the country, about 236 miles from Reykjavik . Ice Lagoon Adventure Tours also runs private excursions.

NiceTravel – Golden Circle, Blue Lagoon & Kerid Volcano

Price: Adults from $218; kids from $123 Duration: 11 hours

Visit the Golden Circle's top sights, including Thingvellir National Park and Gullfoss, plus a volcanic crater and a pristine lagoon on this daylong journey. The park is of both geological and historical significance as it straddles a fault line between two tectonic plates and was the site of a Viking parliament that ruled for hundreds of years starting in A.D. 930. Other highlights include Geysir, a hot spring that shoots plumes of vapor into the air; Gullfoss (aka the Golden Waterfall) over which water cascades down more than 100 feet into a narrow canyon; Kerid, a colorful red-earth volcanic crater; and a two-hour stop at the heated waters of the popular Blue Lagoon. Tour-takers invariably find the scenery spectacular and the guides friendly and informative, though a few found the bus to be too small for the number of people on the tour. Tours happen daily all year long. Pickup from various locations in Reykjavik occurs between 8:30 and 9 a.m. and minibuses return to the city around 8 p.m.

Reykjavik Sailors – Whale Watching

Price: Adults from 11,990 króna (about $87); kids from 5,995 króna (about $44) Duration: 3 to 3.5 hours

While April to October is considered peak season for whale watching off Iceland's coast, humpback, minke and orca whales, as well as porpoises and dolphins, inhabit the waters all year. Reykjavik Sailors, located on Reykjavik's Old Harbour, offers whale watching boat trips throughout the year. Tourgoers report spotting ample wildlife, and appreciate the knowledgeable, friendly guides.

Transportation from area hotels is available for an additional fee. Snacks and beverages are available aboard the boat, which features outdoor viewing platforms as well as heated indoor space. Reykjavik Sailors also operates tours of the northern lights, among other options.

Arctic Adventures – Crystal Ice Cave Tour Iceland

Price: Adults from about $161; kids from around $137 Duration: 2 to 3 hours

Take a ride in an off-roading vehicle from the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon to the edge of the massive Vatnajökull glacier and then hike to a natural ice cave on this small-group excursion. The tour, which is limited to 14 travelers, also allows you to witness the result of calving – the process of icebergs breaking off of glaciers. Tourgoers frequently praise the capable and personable guides. Many reviewers called this the highlight of their trip to Iceland.

Trips depart from the lagoon daily from October to mid-April beginning at 9:20 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. While the hike to the cave is rated as easy, children younger than 6 are not allowed on this trip. All of the necessary safety equipment is included in the cost of the tour. Arctic Adventures conducts a variety of ice cave tours, glacier hikes and more.

Troll Expeditions – Snorkeling in Silfra

Price: From 19,900 króna (about $145) Duration: 3 hours

Snorkel between tectonic plates in the only place where that's possible during this adventure. Located in Thingvellir National Park about a 30-mile drive northeast of Reykjavik, Silfra fissure lies in the space where the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates have slowly moved apart. Its water, from the melted ice of the Langjökull glacier, is exceptionally clean, boasting visibility of about 330 feet. Snorkelers laud the attentive, professional guides as well as the one-of-a-kind experience.

Snorkeling trips are available year-round at least twice a day; start times vary depending on the season. Groups are limited to six people. There are age, weight and health restrictions for this tour; check with the company before you book to ensure you meet all the necessary requirements. Travelers praise the pace of the tour and the dishes featured. Reviewers also applauded guides for their humor and the depth of their knowledge about Iceland's history and culture.

Tours start outside Harpa concert hall every day beginning at 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Wake Up Reykjavik also organizes day trips to the Golden Circle, the South Coast and more.

Adventure Vikings – Silfra Drysuit Snorkeling

Price: From 18,990 króna (about $138) Duration: 2 to 4.5 hours

Explore the pristine glacial waters between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates on this snorkeling tour in Silfra, one of the world's top dive sites. Part of Thingvellir National Park, Silfra fissure is the result of the two tectonic plates separating at a rate of about 2 centimeters per year. The fissure is filled with water from Langjökull glacier that's been filtered through lava fields, making it incredibly pure. Snorkelers rave about the Silfra fissure's beauty and praise the guides for their attention to safety.

The tour lasts up to 4.5 hours depending if round-trip transportation from Reykjavik is needed. Prices include use of snorkeling equipment. You can rent a wearable GoPro camera for an additional 6,900 króna (around $51). Tours are available year-round. We had a Golden Circle/Snorkeling in Silfra day your that was amazing! Pawel picked us up right on time from our hotel, and we made our way to Gullfoss. There were only 4 of us on the tour so that was a nice surprise. Due to the cold morning weather, Pawel moved our snorkeling to the afternoon, which was fine with us!

Snorkeling between the tectonic plates was the most amazing part of my 2 week trip to Iceland! Carlos and Ivan were great guides, very knowledgeable and a comedy duo that are easy on the eyes! Thanks guys! Might have to come back and see you and the tectonic plates again!

Had the most lovely snorkelling experience with Cordelia! Everything about it was fantastic from start to finish. Cordelia was extremely kind, welcoming and fun – and provided lots of great recommendations of things to do and see in Iceland! I had never snorkelled before and definitely recommend this experience to anyone!

We went on a snorkeling tour which was excellent and had awesome views. It was a very cold and windy day. Marcus our guide did an excellent job ensuring that everyone in the tour stayed warm while putting on the equipment. He gave us a great overview of the area and what we would see that day.

We did a 5-day tour which included the south coast tour, the Golden Circle tour, northern lights tour, Flyover experience, Blue Lagoon and Reykjavík city walk. This was a trip I have wanted to do for a while and it didn't disappoint. Nordic Visitor gave me advice on the best month to visit and they were spot on. The weather was good, we were lucky enough to see the northern lights and the tours were not too busy. The tour guides were excellent, full of information and they all seem to love their jobs. This trip was fantastic from start to finish. Thank you Nordic Visitor.

Overall the tours provided were great! The local guides were experienced and knowledgeable. I wanted a more relaxed tour so this was just perfect, not rushed, not running around trying to catch everything. And joining a different group everyday enabled me to meet different people and make new friends everyday. I had an overall wonderful, worry-free relaxing holiday.

Frequently Asked Questions About Multi-Day Iceland Tours

You may have a few questions before visiting Iceland on a multi-day tour package, so here we’ve collected the most commonly asked ones. If you’d like more in-depth information, check out this helpful Iceland Travel Guide .

It’s also good to know that when you choose Nordic Visitor, you can Book With Confidence , safe in the knowledge that your payments are protected. To find out about our booking process, payments and more, please read our FAQs and booking terms .

1. WHAT IS A MULTI-DAY TOUR?

A multi-day tour is a travel package that includes all of your accommodation, transportation and excursions in Iceland.

Rather than booking each hotel, transfer and day tour separately, you can leave all the organising to your dedicated travel consultant. They are based in Reykjavík and will arrange everything on your behalf.

The great thing about multi-day vacation packages is that they combine independent travel with the benefit of escorted day trips. This is a fantastic option if you'd like to learn from expert guides by joining excursions, but also want some free time and flexibility.

2. IS ICELAND SAFE TO VISIT?

Yes, Iceland is one of the world’s safest countries, with low levels of crime and road accidents. Add first-rate emergency services and health care systems, and you have a safe destination in Northern Europe.

Plus, with our 24/7 helpline, there is always someone available to assist you if anything unexpected crops up during your trip. We also recommend purchasing travel insurance that will cover you for local healthcare in case you need it.

3. HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED TO TOUR ICELAND?

You can enjoy a quick introduction to this beautiful country in as few as 4 or 5 days in Iceland . That said, for a more immersive experience, we recommend spending 1 week or more here.

There’s so much to see that you won’t want to miss out on Iceland’s many attractions and experiences. For instance, you could visit the natural wonders of the Golden Circle, the Blue Lagoon , and the glacier lakes on Iceland’s south coast.

The pace you travel also matters, as you do not want to feel rushed during your visit. That’s why our multi-day packages have been crafted and tested by our local travel specialists to ensure a fulfilling visit every time.

Check out the different trip options to see what suits you best. Plus, find out more in this blog on how many days you need in Iceland .

4. WHAT ARE THE MUST-DO TOURS IN ICELAND?

The must-do Iceland tours for you depend on what you’d like to see and how you’d like to experience the country. Most excursions on your multi-day tour will depart from Reykjavík or Akureyri. From here, head into the countryside where you’ll enjoy remarkable views at every turn.

So whether you opt for thrilling excursions or relaxed outings, soon you could be admiring spectacular waterfalls, glacier-topped volcanoes, and towering sea cliffs.

Unmissable tours and excursions in Iceland include:

  • • Exploring the famous Golden Circle route
  • • Soaking in hot springs or a geothermal spa, like the Blue Lagoon
  • • Sailing between icebergs on Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon
  • • Whale watching on a boat tour from Reykjavík or Akureyri
  • • Chasing the northern lights in winter

Top active Iceland tours include:

  • • Snorkelling between two tectonic plates, in the Silfra fissure
  • • Ice caving within Vatnajökull glacier
  • • Experiencing Þórsmörk Nature Reserve on a hiking or jeep tour
  • • Snowmobiling on Langjökull glacier
  • • Riding a charming Icelandic horse in Mosfellsdalur valley

For more inspiration and detailed information about activities, check out this guide to the best tours and day trips in Iceland .

5. WHAT IS THE GOLDEN CIRCLE TOUR IN ICELAND?

The Golden Circle is a popular sightseeing route in South Iceland. The “circle” is a 230-kilometre (140-mile) loop that begins and ends in Reykjavík.

The route’s top attractions include Gulfoss waterfall, the Geysir geothermal area and Þingvellir National Park. Happily, a day trip from Reykjavík will give you plenty of time to see all three.

6. CAN YOU TOUR GLACIERS IN SUMMER?

Absolutely! Although Iceland’s summer weather can be mild, you’ll find glaciers here year-round. So prepare to be enchanted by these natural wonders, whether they’re blanketed in snow or their crevasses and striking ice formations are exposed.

During the summer season – from May to September – you can experience the country’s glaciers for yourself on these excursions:

  • • Hiking on Sólheimajökull and Svínafellsjökull glaciers
  • • Journeying inside Langjökull glacier on the “Into the Glacier” tour
  • • Taking a boat trip or kayaking on a glacier lagoon
  • • Flying over Iceland’s glaciers and volcanoes on a helicopter ride

If you’re keen to try ice caving in Iceland, then it’s best to visit from November to March . This is because the ice caves melt during the summer months, before reforming in winter.

Why not ask your dedicated travel consultant about adding one of these thrilling outings to your Iceland summer tour package ? Plus, discover more ways to experience Iceland’s glaciers and read this guide to Iceland in summer to find out more.

7. WHERE SHOULD I GO IN ICELAND?

Iceland is brimming with jaw-dropping landscapes, popular attractions and hidden gems. And while this makes the Land of Fire and Ice an exciting place to visit, it can leave you spoiled for choice when deciding where to go.

These are some of the best places to go in Iceland to get you started:

  • • Reykjavík
  • • Blue Lagoon
  • • Golden Circle route
  • • Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon
  • • Lake Mývatn
  • • Akureyri
  • • Vík
  • • Snæfellsnes
  • • Vatnajökull National Park

And to find out what to expect in each of Iceland’s stunning regions, check out this complete guide to Iceland travel .

8. IS IT BETTER TO BOOK TOURS IN ICELAND?

Yes, it’s best to book any Iceland day tours well in advance of your trip.

Making arrangements before you go means that you won’t miss out if your preferred excursions are full once you arrive. Plus, if you travel with Nordic Visitor, you’ll have your own local travel expert who’ll make all your tour reservations on your behalf as part of a complete package. This way you can have a completely hassle-free trip.

There are also other ways to explore Iceland. For example, you could opt for a guided small group trip , travelling with up to 16 like-minded adventurers. Or if you like doing your own thing, consider a privately guided package or a self-drive tour of Iceland .

9. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO GO TO ICELAND?

Iceland is stunning all year round, so the best time to visit depends on what you’d like to see and do on your trip.

Summer in Iceland is from May to September. And this is the time to travel if you’d like to enjoy mild temperatures and take advantage of long daylight hours.

Not only is the scenery at its most lush during summer, but there are also more wildlife-watching opportunities. Plus, this time of year is perfect for joining locals in their tradition of swimming in one of Reykjavík’s geothermal pools, followed by ice cream.

If you time your visit for the height of summer – June , July and August – you’ll get to experience the midnight sun . This natural phenomenon is when it stays light late into the night. So you’ll find this is a great time to come to Iceland if you want to maximise your time outdoors, soaking up the scenery.

On the other hand, we recommend travelling in winter if you’re seeking the northern lights. This is because the Icelandic winter – October to March – brings the best aurora-spotting conditions.

The dark skies at this time of year make it much easier to see the striking lights of the aurora. And the long nights provide you with more opportunities to glimpse the northern lights.

It’s not all about the aurora borealis though. The winter season is also ideal for soaking up the festive atmosphere on a Christmas or New Year trip to Iceland . Plus, the country’s rugged landscapes look just as jaw-dropping dusted in snow as they do in summer.

Read this complete guide to the best time to visit Iceland for more advice about when you should travel.

10. WHEN CAN YOU SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ICELAND?

The winter months – from October to March – are the best time of year to see the northern lights in Iceland.

This is because the nights are at their darkest and longest in winter. Indeed, winter’s dark skies are key to spotting the aurora, as the dancing lights are easily seen against the backdrop of night.

The aurora borealis is a natural phenomenon. So while sightings can’t be guaranteed, you’ll have a better chance of glimpsing the northern lights when you join an expert-led outing.

Choose a multi-day tour in winter, and you could enjoy a guided aurora hunt as part of your trip. You can also take a look at this full range of Iceland northern lights tour packages if you’d like to make seeing them the focus of your winter getaway.

Learn more about the best time and place to see the northern lights in Iceland in this blog. And check out this handy aurora borealis travel guide for hints and tips, such as how to photograph this incredible spectacle.

11. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

Yes, you can select the start date that suits you from a variety of itineraries that let you travel year-round in Iceland.

Make the most of summer’s better weather and longer daylight hours by choosing a tour from May to September. Or if you’d rather experience Iceland in winter, opt for start dates between October and April.

Once you’ve decided whether you’d like to travel in summer or winter, simply select the departure that works for you. You’ll find up-to-date availability for the tour you’re interested in on its online calendar.

12. CAN I CUSTOMISE MY ICELAND TOUR?

Absolutely, you can personalise your itinerary by choosing from a variety of optional activities. For example, you can pick from excursions including food tours of Reykjavík, super jeep outings and wildlife-watching boat trips.

You could also opt to extend your stay in Iceland with extra nights in Reykjavík at the start or end of your trip. This is ideal if you would like more time to explore the city’s cultural highlights independently.

If you have something specific in mind for your trip, don’t hesitate to contact us and a dedicated travel consultant will help plan your dream adventure.

13. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHTS?

We recommend checking what flights are available before booking your trip. That said, it’s best to hold off on purchasing them until your travel consultant has confirmed your tour package.

Waiting until your tour is finalised will let you pick flights that suit your itinerary. Plus, it will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you might have about the arrangements for your arrival or departure.

14. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR ICELAND?

The weather in Iceland is known for being changeable, so even if you’re travelling in summer, it’s best to be prepared for all conditions.

We always recommend packing warm layers and waterproofs. This way, come rain or shine, you’ll be comfortable when you’re out and about soaking up Iceland’s natural beauty.

It’s good to know that on some of your guided excursions in nature, a short walk may be the best way to make the most of your visit. So, as well as weatherproof layers, be sure to bring sturdy walking boots or shoes.

If you’ve chosen an excursion that requires special equipment, then this will be provided. For example, on a guided glacier hike you’ll be given, and taught how to use, crampons and an ice axe. Plus, your personal itinerary will detail any essential items needed for each activity on your trip.

Here is an all-season Iceland packing list for your multi-day tour:

  • Walking boots or shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Insulated jacket
  • Woollen or fleece jumpers
  • Seljalandsfoss waterfall
  • Thermal base layers
  • Warm hat, scarf and gloves
  • Warm hiking socks
  • Quick-drying travel towel

Iceland is a large island in the North Atlantic that could take weeks, even months, to explore fully.

However, if you find yourself in Iceland due to a required layover on your way to Europe or are fortunate enough to create one, you’ll be surprised at how much you can experience in a short amount of time.

You may even want to consider booking a weekend trip to Iceland. Regardless of how or why you landed in the land of fire and ice, you’ll want to make the most of that time.

In this article, I’ll share information, ideas, and insight from my past trips to help you plan a fun, productive, and memorable 48 hours in Iceland.

Here are my tips for maximizing time during a short visit.

Reykjavik EDITION Hotel View

If I’m going to be in Iceland for just 48 hours, I stay in Reykjavik, the capital city. There’s so much to do there and it’s easy to use the city as a base to explore more of the island. I’ll talk more about my experience with this shortly.

I’ve stayed at a dozen or so Reykjavik hotels, all of which were excellent, but each had a distinct personality. Here are some of the hotels I, and one of my colleagues, have stayed at in Iceland, and our reviews for each:

  • 101 Hotel, Reykjavik, a Member of Design Hotels
  • Canopy by Hilton Reykjavik City Centre
  • Courtyard by Marriott Reykjavik Keflavik Airport
  • Iceland Parliament Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton
  • Hilton Nordica Reykjavik
  • Hotel Rangá (Small Luxury Hotels of the World)
  • Kvosin Hotel (Mr & Mrs Smith)
  • The Reykjavik EDITION
  • Reykjavik Konsulat Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton
  • Sand Hotel (Mr & Mrs Smith)

Parking can be difficult to find in Reykjavik, and a car isn’t necessary to explore the compact city center. If you prefer to rent a car, you could stay at the Courtyard by Marriott Reykjavik Keflavik Airport by the airport and use the hotel as your base.

The Hilton Nordica Reykjavik is at the edge of the city and convenient when renting a vehicle, as parking is free. The Hotel Rangá is closer to the south shore, away from Reykjavik, and is best reached by car.

Another hotel I haven’t stayed in but have heard fun things about is the Hotel Viking . It’s located in Hafnarfjordhur, outside Reykjavik. The town is oceanside between the airport and the city. I have it on my list to review!

Booking With Hotel Loyalty Points

As you might expect, most of the hotels on our list can be booked using hotel loyalty points or free night certificates (when available).

You can use Hilton Honors , Marriott Bonvoy , and World of Hyatt points for associated hotels in Iceland. IHG One Rewards can no longer be used to book hotels in Iceland.

Accommodations in Iceland are expensive, and supply is limited. Book far in advance if using hotel rewards points or certificates.

Arrival in Iceland Sign

When I arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF), I normally head immediately into the city. Fortunately, securing ground transportation is a breeze:

  • Budget — The public bus system, Strætó , is very efficient. Bus #55 picks up right outside the airport, costs around $16, and will take you to the city in about 1.5 hours.
  • Most Popular —The Flybus or Airport Direct are readily available outside the terminal and cost around $35 each way, per person, for transport to the main bus terminal. The cost includes an ongoing shuttle to your hotel or drop-off at a bus stop near your hotel. Transport takes about an hour. Purchase tickets in the arrivals area at the ticket booths , where you can ask questions, versus the kiosks. Multiple options include scheduled buses, immediate departures, with the shuttle, without a shuttle, etc., with no refunds for kiosk purchases should you make an error.
  • Splurge — A taxi will set you back about $160 to $200, but if you have several travelers and luggage, this option could make sense. The ride is about 45 minutes.

Once in the city, you can explore the area on foot or take the local bus. I found the bus system easy and affordable to use. Taxis can be expensive. I paid $25 for a 10-minute ride that could be walked in about 40 minutes (if it wasn’t 37 degrees and raining).

Don’t forget to stop by duty-free at KEF airport on arrival to pick up any alcohol you might want to drink during your stay. Although happy hours are common throughout the city, alcohol is expensive. There are limited Vínbúðin state-operated locations where you can purchase alcohol in the city center. Just 2 were open when last I visited.

Reykjavik Street

We’ve arrived, made it into the city, and it’s still morning. What’s next?

Day 1 is all about exploring Reykjavik . Here are some suggestions for your first day.

Morning Activities

  • Sandholt Bakery — There are numerous bakeries in the city, but this one is tops. Have breakfast, a homemade pastry with coffee, or grab a sandwich made from delicious sourdough bread.
  • Head to a GeoThermal Pool — There’s the Blue Lagoon , a tourist hot spot that can set you back hundreds of dollars, or choose to bask in a local version. There are 18 in the city and surrounding area.
  • Kolaportid Flea Market — This large market near the Old Harbor is open every weekend. It’s a fabulous place to find a treasure, grab a bite to eat, and people-watch. You could also pick out an Icelandic handmade wool sweater or a piece of local art. After your visit, wander around the Old Harbor.

Afternoon Activities

  • Sign Up for a Food Tour —- Food tours can be costly but worth it in Reykjavik. You’ll pay more than $100 for about a 3-hour tour. I have spoken to several travelers who have participated, and the feedback was unanimously positive.
  • Rainbow Street and Hallgrimskirkja Church — Don’t miss the iconic brightly painted rainbow street that leads to Hallgrimskirkja Church . The church is the largest in Iceland and has a modernistic interior with a striking pipe organ. Entrance to the church is free. There is a charge to climb the tower, but if it’s a sunny day, you’ll want to see the view of the city, mountains, and water.
  • Street Art — Reykjavik is full of colorful street art around every corner. Most of it is in the funkier uptown area, versus the Old Harbor and historic city areas.
  • Museums — If it’s raining (and perhaps if it’s not raining), head to Perlan’s Wonders of Iceland to experience everything Iceland offers in an inside exhibition. Yes, that means the aurora borealis, waterfalls, ice caves, and volcanoes. The provided link has many more museums from which to select.
  • Find the Sun Voyager — Walk along the water to find Reykjavik’s iconic sculpture. It resembles the skeleton of a Viking ship and is beautiful at night.
  • Water Excursions — If you want to see whales, puffins, or the cityscape from the water, you can catch a boat tour from the Old Harbor in the city. Tours range from 35 minutes to 3 hours and start at $50.

Here’s an interactive map to help you find some of these attractions.

Evening Activities

  • Happy Hour — Happy hour is a big deal in Reykjavik, and nearly every bar, restaurant, and hotel has one. As you’re walking during the day, look for posted signs and ask at the front desk of your hotel and the locals. The Appy Hour app for Android and iOS can be useful but is not always up to date.
  • Performances at Harpa — The city’s major entertainment venue always has something going on. Take in a blues festival, rock concert, opera, symphony, or other special event.
  • Lebowski Bar — If you’re a movie fan of “The Big Lebowski” or simply want a good burger and beer, step into this themed den to enjoy the surroundings and entertainment. Yes, it’s a bit touristy.
  • Star Gazing — If it’s not summer and the nights are dark, you’ll want to take in the aurora borealis (Northern Lights). They’re visible from Reykjavik, but you’ll want to get out of the city for the best view. Hotel Rangá is the perfect spot for star gazing.

Seljalandsfoss Falls Iceland

Day 2 presents the opportunity to venture out of the city and explore the countryside . When I have a full day, I opt for an organized excursion to see as much as possible in a limited time. I enjoy learning more about the destination and meeting other travelers.

You can have an extraordinary experience in a single day in Iceland.

For the first-time visitor, I suggest 1 of 2 classic tours: the Golden Circle Tour or the South Shore Discovery Tour . Tour operators will pick you up at your Reykjavik hotel or a bus stop nearby.

What To Expect on a Golden Circle Tour

I have taken 3 Golden Circle tours, and each was different. Your Golden Circle Tour, easily done in a long day , will include all, or many, of the following sites or activities:

  • Kerid Crater — You’ll have a chance to hike around the crater and down to the lake.
  • Waterfalls — The majestic Gullfoss waterfalls will certainly be included, but you may also see Seljalandsfoss (pictured above), Helgufoss, and Thorufoss waterfalls.
  • Thingvellir National Park — Walk between the tectonic plates of the Eurasian and North American continents. It is also the site of the oldest functioning parliament in the world.
  • Geysers and Strokkur Hot Springs — It’s guaranteed you’ll see a geyser blow.
  • Lunch at the Tomato Farm — Iceland depends on greenhouses for fresh fruit and vegetables. The Friðheimar tomato farm is an interesting and inviting place for lunch. If you’ve rented a car, don’t miss the Farmers Bistro mushroom farm, which is equally unique and has the best mushroom soup in the world (in my opinion).
  • Icelandic Horses — Your tour may include visiting the barns and a demonstration of the gaiting skills unique to Icelandic horses.

What To Expect on a South Shore Tour

The South Shore is home to some extraordinary landscapes. Here’s what to expect during a typical South Shore tour:

  • Black Sand Beach — Marvel at the stark basalt columns and walk along the beach.
  • Lunch in Vic — Enjoy lunch in this waterside town and hike up to the church for a lovely view.
  • Hike to the Glacier — A non-strenuous hike to the incredible Sólheimajökull Glacier is likely included on this tour.
  • Waterfalls — Seljalandsfoss (pictured above), Helgufoss, and Thorufoss waterfalls will be included.

You can book either tour for about $100 per person, but tours with fewer participants can cost more. Expect the tour to last around 10 hours. I’ve had good experiences booking with Viator , Reykjavik Excursions , and BusTravel Iceland .

Once you’re back in the city, it’s time for a bite to eat.

Hotdog Stand Reykjavik

There are endless places to eat in Reykjavik. I’ll submit these suggestions to try because they specialize in a specific cuisine, have limited menus that showcase that cuisine , and do it well:

  • Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur — You won’t forgive yourself if you miss having this iconic Icelandic hot dog. It’s perhaps the best hot dog you’ll ever have, as it’s made with lean lamb and is uniquely garnished. It’s also the best food value you’ll find in Iceland. Make the pilgrimage to the stand near the Old Harbor for an authentic experience.
  • Cafe Loki — Yes, it’s a bit touristy, but you won’t find a better and more affordable way to try traditional Icelandic food. This is the perfect place to dive into the local food scene. The sampler plate includes all the classics, then you can top it off with a local delicacy: rye bread ice cream. Tip: Skip the fermented shark.
  • Messinn — A popular favorite with a concise menu that includes fresh fish and seafood. Artic char is one of my favorite local cold-water fish, but the Icelandic cod is also delicious.
  • Reykjavik Fish — This restaurant serves only fish, fish soup, fish stew, and mixed seafood. I always have fish and chips and it’s always good. My friend liked the fish stew. It has a casual atmosphere. My favorite location is Frakkastígur 12.

Oh no, it’s already time to leave Iceland, and it seems like we just arrived!

Be sure to have booked your return transportation to the airport. If you stayed in Reykjavik, head to the airport 3 to 4 hours before your flight.

Obviously, a longer stay would be better, but you can experience a nice taste of Iceland during a 48-hour visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is iceland expensive.

It’s not usually expensive to fly to Iceland, but once you arrive, lodging, food, alcohol, and transportation can be expensive.

What should I do for my first time in Iceland?

I would suggest a couple of days exploring the capital city of Reykjavik, a Golden Circle tour, and a South Shore tour. If you plan to rent a car, visit Reykjavik before (or after) your car rental. You do not need a car in the city, and parking can be challenging.

Do I need cash in Iceland?

Iceland is basically a cashless society. The only time I used cash was to tip tour guides and bartenders who served me complimentary hotel welcome beverages. Tipping is not expected, especially for taxi drivers.

How do I get to Iceland?

There are nearly 2 dozen airlines that service KEF, the international airport on the island, from the U.S. Direct flights can be found from most major cities and can be inexpensive. Google Flights is a good place to start to see which airlines fly from your departure airport.

Is visiting Reykjavik worth it?

Visiting Reykjavik is worth it. There is so much to do in the city, and it can be a base for exploring the surrounding areas. A trip to Iceland should include 2 to 3 days in the city.

Is the Blue Lagoon worth it?

Yes, the Blue Lagoon can be worth the experience. There are, however, more than 100 less expensive and enjoyable geothermal pools throughout the island. If it’s on your bucket list, you should go.

Here's How To Visit Iceland On A Shoestring Budget, According To Rick Steves

I celand has gained a reputation for being hard on a traveler's wallet. And we're sorry to say that the reputation is deserved. Iceland is expensive. Accommodations, rental cars, food, and excursions all add up to make visiting the island one of the most expensive vacations you can take. So, do you have to skip Iceland if you're on a shoestring budget? No, because Rick Steves, Iceland-lover and lifelong budget traveler, has a trick up his sleeve.

To save money on your Iceland vacation, Rick Steves recommends skipping the expensive restaurants and "stocking up on groceries at a supermarket where locals shop." On his Facebook page, Steves posted a photograph of his supermarket haul showing "more than enough for three meals." The spread cost 5,000 króna, which is about $35. One meal out will generally cost you between $25 and $40 per person, and even fast food will set you back that much. Making your own food can mean major savings.

So, where do the locals shop in Iceland? The most affordable grocery stores are Bónus and Kronan (10-11 and Krambudin are more expensive). One thing you won't be able to pick up in a supermarket? Alcohol. You can visit a Vínbúðin liquor store or hit one of Reykjavík's trendy bars, though you'll pay around $11 for a pint.

More Ways To Save On Food And Drink

One big tip from Rick Steves' team is to enjoy a picnic. Follow Steves' advice to buy groceries in the city, then make a packed lunch or dinner and enjoy it outdoors (you're most likely in Iceland for the scenery rather than the food anyway). Food choices can be limited and way overpriced while you're on the road, so you're probably not missing out.

If you want to go out to eat (you are on vacation, after all), head out for lunch rather than dinner. Many restaurants offer reduced-price specials over lunchtime. One positive thing about Iceland compared to the U.S. is that taxes are included in the bill, and there is no need to tip. What you see is what you'll pay. However, if you do splurge on a fine dining meal, it's appropriate to tip around 10–15% for exceptional service.

Finally, let's talk about drinking. When in Iceland, you should avoid bottled water and drink tap water instead. It's of excellent quality, so ask for tap water in restaurants and fill up your reusable bottle before going out for the day. And if you're looking for something a little harder than water, seek out happy hours in Iceland's bars. You can generally get a pint of beer for under $8 during these promotions, which often run for several hours.

Saving On Accommodation And Attractions

We said at the beginning of this article that basically everything comes with a hefty price tag in Iceland, though there are ways to save on many costs. Accommodations will take up a large portion of your budget; guesthouses (which may be charmingly rustic) and hostels are often the cheapest indoor options. But if you really want to stretch your króna, grab a tent. Campsites cost between $12 and $20 per person per night — a bargain in any country, never mind in Iceland. Private rentals on sites like Airbnb often cost less than hotels, but we'd like to gently steer you away from that option. As in many places, locals in Iceland are being priced out of the housing market because of the sheer number of tourist rentals. Don't contribute to the problem!

Finally, attractions can take a significant chunk of your vacation budget. Luckily, there are lots of budget-friendly things to do in Iceland , from cycling around the capital to visiting the Húsdýragarðurinn Zoo, which costs less than $15. And what of Iceland's main tourist attraction, the Blue Lagoon? Many people, including Rick Steves' team, claim that the Blue Lagoon isn't worth the cost , especially as there are a ton of far cheaper and less crowded alternatives dotted around this geothermally active island. There are even many free hot springs you can soak in. So pack a picnic and a tent and get out into the countryside.
