AdGuard on Windows and Mac covers popular browsers, with highly configurable options for ads, content, and tracker blocking, as well as a parental controls module for restricting adult content. AdGuard for Android is a no-root ad-blocker that blocks advertising on apps and games, though you’ll have to install it from AdGuard’s site instead of through Google Play. If you’re a Safari fan, Wipr may be the best ad blocker for both your Mac and iPhone. The app is available for both iOS and macOS — costing $1.99 from either Apple App Store — and it promises to work with Safari as well as apps that use Safari for displaying web pages.

You’ll find a full array of features with Wipr, which not only blocks apps and trackers, but cryptocurrency miners, EU cookie and GDPR notices and anything else that gets in your way of surfing the web. Its blocklist gets updated twice a week, and there’s little configuration; the idea is that you load Wipr and forget that it’s there while it does its job in the background.

With Wipr, pages should load faster in Safari, which will be particularly welcome if you’re surfing from an iPhone, where ads and trackers can bog down your browser’s speed.

1Blocker was one of the first really good ad blockers on iOS when Apple opened up that functionality on iPhones and iPads; the apps has since been optimized for Safari. 

The app is designed to make browsing faster and more secure by blocking ads, popups, trackers and other online cruft. Rather than blocking content of a downloaded page, 1Blocker works with Safari's content blocker API to tell the browser what to block in advance, saving time and resources.

2. Firefox Focus (Android, iOS)

Firefox Focus is another addition to Mozilla's family of browsers. This one's a privacy-oriented version of Firefox that bakes in ad-blocking and anti-tracking into a light and functional package. Firefox Focus blocks ads and speeds up browsing, while also working in privacy-friendly features like automatic history and cookie clearing. 

Users can selectively block ads, analytics, content and social trackers with easy toggles, turn on a "stealth" mode, and set a default search engine.

3. AdClear (Android, iOS)

AdClear — or AdClear Plus if you're searching for the iOS version — offers the kind of mobile ad blocking in browsers that similar apps provide. But AdClear takes it one step farther by also blocking ads in apps. 

AdClear achieves this through a DNS changer feature that routes traffic through a VPN. AdClear doesn't catch everything in all apps, and in our experience, some apps ran a little slower. But this free download can put a stop to ads interrupting what you're trying to do whether in an app or a browser.

1. Decentraleyes (Chrome, Firefox)

Some times, blocking ads can also prevent websites fromn pulling needed resoruces and libraries from third-party sources, breaking web pages in the process. Decentraleyes tries to stop that from happening by acting as a local content delivery network emulator to serve up the files that websites need. By doing so, this extension can stop websites from sending out requests to the likes of Google Hosted Libraries.

Think of Decentraleyes as a complement to ad blockers. In fact, the extension specifically says it can work with uBlock Origin and AdBlock Plus, both of which we recommend up above.

2. Opera (Desktop, Android, iOS)

The Opera browser bakes in ad-blocking features into the browser without the need for an extra add-on, while also offering privacy-friendly tools such as an unlimited, built-in VPN service, incognito mode, fraud and malware warnings for suspicious links and pages, and more. In addition, you can further customize Opera's capabilities with a wide array of extensions. 

Mobile users need not fret, as the Android version comes with just about everything the desktop version has but built for touch-screen interfaces. 3. Privacy Badger (Chrome, Firefox, Opera)

The Electronic Frontier Foundation's Privacy Badger browser extension was born from the EFF's concerns about the business models of some privacy tools and ad blockers. 

Privacy Badger functions similarly to extensions like AdBlock Plus (on which it was based), observing the various tracking tools that advertisers and other third parties might use to track your online activities and selectively blocking them from executing. Built-in learning algorithms adapt to the sites you visit and take any new tracking tools discovered into account. 

While not explicitly an ad blocker, Privacy Badger does also block some advertising, depending on how aggressively the ads track you across websites.

4. Tor Browser (Desktop, Android)

The Tor network helps anonymize your internet activity by bouncing the data you send and receive through a distributed anonymous network of routers to foil a common online surveillance technique called traffic analysis, which can reveal the sites you visit or who you're communicating with. 

The Tor Browser is an all-in-one package that includes everything you need to surf the net through the Tor network in an easy-to-install portable package. The package includes a modified version of Firefox with privacy aids such as NoScript baked in, and an automatic setup aid that makes it easy to connect to and create new Tor circuits. 

On the desktop, you can grab a version of Tor Browser for Windows, macOS or Linux. There's also a version of Tor Browser for Android, which replaces the previous OrBot + OrFox combination recommended for browsing Tor on Android.

5. Onion Browser (iOS)

iOS users aren’t left out when it comes to browsing the Tor anonymizer network, with the Onion Browser among the more popular options on Apple’s mobile OS. 

Previously a premium app, Onion Browser has since moved to a donation model, opening up access to everyone who wants to download the app, without compromising security or features. The usual caveats apply: Browsing through Tor will slow down the web experience, and some features, like video streams and video files won’t work in order to preserve anonymity.

There is plenty of scope for customization. For example, you can create rules for a defined URL or hide a particular element with a CSS selector. You can also block cookies, or allow ads for a particular site while still blocking trackers and social buttons.

1Blocker doesn’t have access to the pages you visit and doesn’t track you in any way. There are no “acceptable ads,” as funding for the app comes from subscriptions. These cost either $2.99 a month, or $14.99 for a year. There is a free version of the app, but it’s limited in what it can do. For example, you can only block either trackers or ads – not both.

There is a huge number of ad blockers nowadays, but how to choose a really functional one? Is it possible to find a quality product among the free options? In this article we will test 10 most effective ad blockers for Safari browser on MacOS. Testing will be conducted on YouTube primarily, to see how it blocks various types of advertising. As secondary sources, we’ll also be visiting Facebook, Amazon, DailyMail, Buzzfeed, USAToday and CNN websites.

For page loading speed tests and web traffic we will use Web Inspector Developer Tool in Safari . Tip: to run Web Inspector open Preferences, go to the Advanced tab, tick the “Show Develop menu in menu bar” checkbox, and there click “Show Web Inspector”. Also, we’ve initially selected two dozens of extensions, and then narrowed it down to ten, based on performance.

Top-10 ad blockers for Safari browser

Let’s start with naming these 10 ad blockers for Safari along with basic facts summary, e.g. current version, macOS compatibility, size, browser memory consumption, number of interface languages.

AdBlock Max

AdBlock Max is a free Safari extension, which, according to the developers, blocks ads on YouTube, Facebook and other sites, protects privacy and increases the site load speed. The app loads RAM a little, but it’s not critical. In practice, this app has proven to be an average among ad blockers for Safari, blocking almost all visible advertising on sites that are familiar to most users.

To test the impact on webpage loading speed, we’ve visited several major websites, e.g. YouTube, Facebook, Amazon, and made measurements with AdBlock Max on and off to compare. We’ve done the same for all extensions on the list.

AdBlock for Safari is practically equal to the previous extension: same workflow, similar test results. The only difference is less RAM load, in this case it is 17.1 MB. If you need an ad blocker for an older Mac, this option is perfect. There’s the Pause option, whitelist (to allow ads on certain websites), and an option to allow non-intrusive ads (Google ads, for example). Page load tests indicate that AdBlock reduces traffic by 20% on average. 

Magic Lasso

Version : 2.0 | Licence : free / subscribe | Size : 7 mb | Memory : 22 mb

Magic Lasso Adblock for Safari has shown mixed results. On one hand, it does not block ads on YouTube at all (the only one out of ten). On the other hand, it blocks major categories of advertising, meaning that even a free version blocks most types of ads. But will this be relevant for users who want to hide ads on YouTube? What’s good, is that Magic Lasso’s support is free, so you can ask them anything via feedback (at) magiclasso (dot) co. Subscription for Pro version is billed annually at $15.

AdGuard for Safari takes up quite a lot of space and consumes a lot of RAM as for a browser extension. However, that is why it shows the highest points in our tests for ads by category, as well as  blocks absolutely all advertising on YouTube. In the web surfing mode it performs well and does not let annoying ads though too. The advantage of this Safari ad block extension is the choice of 8 filters. Generally, this is a good blocker, but if a user has a limited amount of RAM resources, it could be an issue. Yet 70 Mb of RAM should cause trouble on a Mac, right?

Judging by the 3.2 product version, it would seem a product has gained sophistication, and in fact it has. Ka-Block does not show any ads on YouTube, it scores highly in the test by advertising variety, it also proves effective in web surfing mode. The size of the application and the use of RAM are minimal. Sometimes, for a truly quality product, one doesn’t have to make a mainstream interface with many filters and plethora of functionality. Efficiency is what makes it one of the top ad blockers for Safari.

Version : 1.3 | Licence : free | Size : 11 mb | Memory : 49 mb

uBlock shows average results, it successfully blocks YouTube ads, but does not block important advertising categories. It is hard to see a significant difference from other extensions in web surfing mode, operation and site download speed. However, despite the small size, the amount of RAM used is almost 4.5 times the size of the application itself, which is weird at least.

Ad and Stuff Blocker

Version : 3.12.0 | Licence : free | Size : 1 mb | Memory : 8 mb

Although Ad and Stuff Blocker does not look like a credible app and has no reviews at all on the App Store (perhaps, because of a rather strange logo), it has performed well. It successfully blocks ads on YouTube and different types of adverts. In web surfing mode there are no noticeable differences from other ad blockers for Safari browser. All in all, it is a decent product. The only nuance we’ve encountered is that, apparently, in MacOS Task Manager the program gets a different name and is hard to find among hundreds of other processes.

AdBlock Plus

Version : 2.1.1 | Licence : free | Size : 17 mb | Memory : 6 mb

The developer claims Adblock Plus for Safari is completely free and reliable blocker. We’ve conducted a number of tests and found out that it really can handle tasks on the average level. It stops constant YouTube ads, and shows good results among other extensions in testing by advertising categories. A low use of RAM resources is also a nice factor.

Ghostery Lite

Version : 1.1.0 | Licence : free | Size : 7 mb | Memory : 4 mb

It is very strange that this app does not have any reviews in the App Store, because it has demonstrated the best test results. This may be due to its release date – January 10, 2020 which is recent. The “Lite” version title suggests there should be a Premium too, but neither description nor the app itself does not contain any info on it.

Due to low browser RAM consumption, you should be able to use it on laptops of practically any age or performance level. However, the MacOS version should be at least 10.13. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the program is the page load timer, and judging by its indicators, pages load on average 0.5 seconds faster. A slight difference, but it is very nice that the developer took care of such a trifle.

Version : 1.0.4 | Licence : free | Size : 4 mb | Memory : 70 mb

The first thing to ask is why is such a small program using so much memory? In general, AdLock  proved to be good, blocking ads on YouTube, of course, and scoring good points in testing. It hides all forms of ads, be it banners and pop-ups, or autoplay videos, animation, etc. Extra points for additional features, such as anti-spyware and anti-malware protection, whitelist, social media filter (removes Like buttons).

Before drawing conclusions, let’s calculate the points based on handling various types of advertising and services. We’ll simply add up points for the following:

• Contextual advertising : Google AdSense, Yandex Direct. 
• Analytics services : Google Analytics, Hotjar, Yandex Metric. 
• Banner ads : flash ads, gifs and still images. 
• Error collection services : Sentry, Bugsnag. 

Thus, our scale below is 0 to 8 range. And although there have been reports (e.g. ZDNet ) about Apple limiting the potency of ad blockers for Safari, most of the ones on our list did a decent job. 

The best performance, as we see, is by the least popular in the App Store Ghostery Lite and Ka-Block! . AdLock, AdGuard and Magic Lasso follow with a bit lower points. Yet, we should mention, that while all extensions block ads on YouTube, Magic Lasso does not.

Typically, users only use these extensions for one purpose – blocking ads on YouTube. Any modern blocker should handle this task a priori. But sometimes there comes a time when the user changes priorities and needs a more efficient app, with a certain set of functions and capabilities. Finally, we would like to add that the only drawback of any ad blocker out there is that ads integrated into videos still cannot be blocked. And that’s impossible so far.

Good - but needs status indicator

EDIT: Developer indicated that Apple does not allow the AdBlock icon to change color when Active vs Inactive. That's frustrating but I'm grateful for the Developer's feedback. FYI Apple - a bit more Developer leniency would be helpful in cases like these to enhance the user experience. ORIGINAL REVIEW: Works well for me - but why doesn't the icon gray out when I pause ad blocking? If I forget to turn it back on, the icon just remains blue and I forget that it's still paused. Please fix.

Ad Block customer (forever). My MacBook and I - as an internet user(s) can never be without Ad Block. Stopped Working

I've been using this specific adblock for years and although it works on some of the other machines I own it has stopped working as intended recently. Every now and then an ad would slip by which a quick refresh would fix but now ads still pop up but are blacked out with audio still coming from the ads. I don't think this recent behaviour is deserving of anything less than 3 stars but imo is no longer that 5 star product I used to love.

Elderly American tourist killed in elephant attack while on safari in Zambia

The tourist died after the attack at Kafue National Park.

An elderly American tourist was killed after an "aggressive" bull elephant attacked a vehicle during a game drive in Zambia, the safari operator said.

The incident took place Saturday morning at Kafue National Park, a Lusaka Police spokesperson confirmed to ABC News. Gail Mattson, 79, was confirmed by the family as the victim.

"An aggressive bull elephant charged the vehicle carrying six guests and a guide who were on a game drive from Lufupa Camp," Wilderness, the company operating the safari, said in a statement to ABC News Wednesday.

Four other people received treatment for minor injuries after the incident, the company said.

"The six guests were on the game drive when the vehicle was unexpectedly charged by the bull elephant," Keith Vincent, Wilderness' chief executive officer, said in the statement, adding, that the safari guide's vehicle was "blocked" by the terrain at the time of the attack.

"Our guides are all extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide's route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm's way quickly enough," Vincent said.

Following the attack, Kafue National Park management was immediately called to assist and a helicopter was dispatched to the scene, according to Vincent. Local police, Zambia's Department of National Parks & Wildlife and other authorities are involved in the investigation, he said.

"This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died," he said in the statement. "We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident."

The elderly woman's remains will be repatriated to her family in the U.S. with support from local Zambian authorities and the U.S. Embassy in Lusaka, according to the statement.

Last month, a similar bull elephant attack took place in Pilanesberg National Park, South Africa.

Videos of the March 18 incident show a bull elephant lifting a 22-seat safari truck up several times with his trunk before letting it drop. There were no deaths reported in that incident.

Hendry Blom, a bystander who caught the incident on camera, told ABC News, "We were definitely scared, especially for the people in the truck because we thought they might die."

And no, that's not a typo; the "ee" is a not-so-subtle nod to the Wagoneer it's based on. As long as we're pointing out the obvious, it would be pointless to pay homage to the Wagoneers of yore without at least a touch of woodgrain, and the Vacationeer wears it in the thin-strip style of select Jeep models from the late 20th century, including the low-volume Wagoneer Brougham of the early 1980s.

The custom exterior paint, dubbed Spearminted, is similar to the hue of the paint on the Willys Dispatcher Concept also found on this list, but it ramps up the spent nuclear fuel rod effect to Simpsons levels of iridescence. Larger wheel openings and custom body-side flare extensions shroud 35-inch BFGoodrich mud-terrain tires mounted to 18 x 9.0-inch 701 Method racing wheels. The tire and wheel package provide a 1.5-inch lift while front and rear skid plates help to deflect obstacles, and a front-mounted Warn winch and a trio of 11-inch TYRI LED lights provide peace of mind. Jeep's 510-hp twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six "Hurricane" engine provides the power to keep the vacation rolling.

The Overlanding vibe is strong thanks to the custom carbon-fiber RedTail Overland Skyloft affixed to the roof. Featuring climate control, room for two, and panoramic viewing capabilities, it seems like the ideal place to spend a night in the boonies, or even your driveway. To make climbing up and in via the weatherproof pass-through easier, Jeep removed the second- and third-row seating and mounted a small step that doubles as a table.

The rear area features a bed liner to stow gear. Distinguished fashion designer and Wagoneer enthusiast/owner Kiel James Patrick was tapped for the front upholstery, coming up with a design featuring classic Jeep vehicles dotting a distinctive and charming New England–inspired pattern. (Attn. Jeep: You know you could sell this fabric for real, right?)

Jeep Wrangler Low Down Concept

Longtime fans will likely remember the Jeep Lower 40 concept the brand dropped back in 2009 at the 43rd annual Easter Jeep Safari. This year's Jeep Low Down concept exists as an update of sorts, following the theme of fitting the biggest tires possible without altering the suspension or lifting the ride height.

The formula involves some clever cleaver work to make room for ginormous BFGoodrich Krawler 42 x 14.5 R-20 mud-terrain tires mounted on 20-inch beadlock wheels. Custom carbon-fiber fender flares help facilitate the project. Otherwise, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 suspension remains untouched, but Dana 60 axles with 5.38 gears are brought in to replace the standard Rubicon Dana 44s. The result is a low center of gravity teamed with increased ground clearance, breakover, and approach and departure angles.

The exterior is finished in Poison Apple Red paint, and the hood is a custom carbon-fiber unit with a see-through power dome. The profile gets a bit of streamlining with the removal of the exterior door handles, and a race-style fuel filler resides in the driver's-side rear quarter.

Interior tweaks include a Rhino-lined floor, black leather seats with cloth inserts, and a radio delete instrument panel. "Listening to the engine is enough, in the Low Down," says Chris Piscitelli, design manager for Dodge/SRT, who had a hand in creating this year's concepts. A custom red-tinted semi-transparent bikini top makes sure any light that passes through glows with a red hue.

Like its Lower 40 inspiration, the Jeep Low Down relies on a V-8 engine, in this case a modern 475-hp 6.4-liter 392 (you saw the numerous callouts, right?) and an eight-speed automatic transmission, whereas the Lower 40 made do with just a 390-hp 5.7-liter Hemi.

Jeep Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept

Born from the efforts of Jeep Performance Parts designers and the Mopar engineering teams, the Gladiator Rubicon High Top Concept channels the '70s J-series pickups, particularly the highly decorated versions from the mid-'70s when Jeep tried to get hip. (Remember the Jeep J-10 Honcho ?)

Brown was the official color of the 1970s, so Jeep starts off with a two-tone Ginger Snap metallic exterior with bold graphics that look the part. Interior mods are subtle but appropriate. The seats have been trimmed with custom quilted and perforated tan and black Alea leather, and JPP logos reside on the headrests. JPP provides the sun bonnet, pedal kit, floor mats, and doorsill guards. JPP also provided some concept flat fender flares.

Mods from outside vendors include a front bumper from American Expedition Vehicles—check the custom protective hoop sitting just above a Warn winch—rock rail power steps from Rock Slide Engineering, and a truck bed storage system with lockable dual sliding drawers from Decked.

Power comes from the trusty 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine mated to a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. Torque is funneled to Dana 60 front and rear axles with matching 5.38:1 gears, then moves on to 40 x 13.5 R-18 BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3 tires mounted on 18 x 9.0-inch Satin Black KMC Grenade Crawl beadlock wheels. An AccuAir adjustable suspension helps fine-tune the suspension for the task at hand.

Willys Dispatcher Concept

Aside from the paint, the Willys Dispatcher doesn't look much different from the current Wrangler. And although there's a lot more going on here than just its Element 115 green paint, we'd be fine if there wasn't. As designer Chris Piscitelli not so coyly mentioned in brief preview, more than one current Jeep color first debuted on concept vehicles like this. A gloss-black windshield surround almost disappears—along with the standard black roll cage—due to the high contrast with the nuclear-age-inspired green paint.

Exterior color aside, the Willys Dispatcher, which counts the postwar-era Willys Jeeps as its inspiration, has some pretty cool features, including front and rear Dana 50 axles with 4:70 gears and 36-inch Traxion tires mounted on 16 x 7.0-inch white steel wheels for the perfect vintage look. The bumpers are crafted to look homemade old-school, the front with a beefy Warn 8274 winch mounted. The flat fenders and "Willys" stamped lettering in the hood really play into the retro vibe.

Inside, distressed saddle leather mixes with houndstooth cloth inserts; combined with the low back seats—sans headrests—the midcentury vibe is palpable. The vinyl flooring is from Jeep Performance Products, as are the bikini top and the onboard air compressor.

For all the looking back, the powertrain is undeniably modern, the Willys Dispatcher using Jeep's 2.0-liter plug-in-hybrid 4xe propulsion system that delivers 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic. It's a blend of old and new that successfully transcends time.

Apple updates all of their phones every year with the latest CPU. I'm disappointed they can't do this with the rest of their product line, and that we're left wondering whether a given model will be updated next month or more than a year away. I thought that moving away from Intel and using their own CPUs would have let them update more often. I'd like to update from my Intel Mac mini, and I've priced out the replacement at close to $2K. I don't want to buy an M2 Pro when there might be an M3 soon or a much more powerful M4 a year from now, so I'm holding on to my money for now.

BOM's first winter forecast for 2024 declares it could be one of Australia's warmest on record

The Bureau of Meteorology's (BOM) first winter forecast of 2024 has confidently declared one of the warmest on record throughout Australia.

It has also slightly favoured above average rain across a wide swathe of the interior and the east.

The BOM's modelling showed most of Australia will have both minimum and maximum temperatures of about 1-2 degrees Celsius above average.

And for most of Western Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and the eastern seaboard, there is more than 70 per cent chance this winter would be amongst the hottest 20 per cent of winters.

If the forecast proves correct, this year could challenge last year's record warm winter, which brought the national temperature 1.53C above the 1961-1990 baseline average.

While the balmy winter forecast does not indicate the complete absence of cold spells, frost and snow, it does virtually ensure temperatures will be higher than normal when averaged across the entire season.

The bullish outlook is mainly due to the ongoing record high sea surface temperatures around the globe, which warm the overlying air — but is also influenced by Australia's warming climate, which has seen the temperature rise 1.5C since 1910.

Why the winter rain forecast may need an adjustment

While the temperature outlook is unambiguous, how much rain falls across Australia is less straightforward due to the far more variable impact climate change and warm oceans have on precipitation.

For most of Australia, the outlook suggested the odds of it being wetter or drier than normal is about 50-50, grading to a 70 per cent chance of above median rainfall across pockets of the interior.

It indicated a 70 per cent chance of below median rain for small parts of the Kimberley, Top End, and the South Australian coast. 

Is there really no strong indication of whether or not winter will be wet or dry?

As winter approaches and the seasonal forecasts are updated, there's a distinct possibility the chances of a wet winter will increase due to a major spanner in the works – a possible La Niña.

Since La Niña is on the radar, why isn't it already factored into the forecast?

The BOMs model used to produce our seasonal outlooks is somewhat of an outlier amongst global models – by holding the Pacific in a Neutral phase during the coming months, while several other forecasting agencies indicate a rapid cooling.

If Pacific Ocean water temperatures drop to La Niña levels this winter, the odds favouring a wetter season will shift upwards, especially across Australia's central and eastern inland, a trend which would only intensify further into spring and summer.

The additional cloud cover associated with La Niña would also reduce the probability of above average daytime temperatures.

How the BOM can forecast the weather months in advance

Because day-to-day weather can't be predicted with accuracy more than a week ahead, sometimes people assume seasonal forecasts must be unreliable.

Weather models work by ingesting millions of observations to simulate the atmosphere, then use the laws of physics to calculate how conditions will change into the future.

However, there are key differences that allow a seasonal forecast to have accuracy months in advance, and well beyond a standard weather forecast.

• 1. Seasonal forecasts cover a longer time period of up to three months and therefore smooth out the day-to-day noise of fluctuating weather. In other words, a seasonal forecast is just averaging the weather over an extended period compared to normal.
• 2. Seasonal forecasts are produced from model ensembles, which involve running a weather model dozens of times and averaging the output to offer guidance on the likelihood of any given scenario. For example, a model could be run 100 times, and if 70 of those runs or "members" show above average rain over a particular location, that would equate to a 70 per cent chance of above average rain.
