Ganden monastery near Lhasa in central Tibet, Asia

Private and Luxury Tibet Tours

On your Tibet travel you’ll spot Buddhist monks and nuns prostrate in front of  Lhasa’s Jokhang Temple . Its rooftop offers a spectacular view of  Barkhor Square  and the iconic  Potala Palace . Near  Sera Monastery , an elderly woman, spinning a prayer wheel, smiles warmly. In no time at all you feel the spiritual energy of Tibet, shining through the landscape, radiating from every colorful door and quiet niche.

This is no more the forbidden kingdom. If Tibet has long been on your bucket-list, it’s time to tick it off. It may be a longish journey to get there, and permits, paperwork and guides are required. But you can leave all of that to your friends at Enchanting Travels; they’ll orchestrate a private Tibet tour that you’ll be talking to your grandchildren about.

Turquoise blue  Yamdrok Lake  shimmers in the bright sunshine, reflecting cloudless Himalayan skies. Shaggy yaks, most beloved animal of the Tibetans, graze on the vast high-altitude plateaus.  Mt Everest’s North Base Camp  is accessible by road, without any need for trekking. It is a fascinating place, this massive plateau in the Himalayas—an almost inhospitable terrain, with a welcoming people.

You’ve probably been in love with the idea of Tibet for a long time. Now the reality of it will touch your soul.

*Please note that Tibet tours are only possible for five or more people traveling together as per the new Visa regulations by the Chinese government.

a spiritual Land

Perhaps it's Tibet's roof-of-the-world elevation, or its creation myth that had it connected to heaven by a rope: Tibet seems to be somehow suspended between heaven and earth, studded with places of worship and mountains that scrape the sky. Despite an intense modernization campaign by the Chinese government, the Tibetan people retain a transcendent spiritual quality that informs every aspect of their lives, which makes their home on the Earth's highest plateau one of the world's most intriguing travel destinations.

Luxury Tibet Tours

Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white

In western China, between the indomitable peaks of the Himalayan range to the south and the Taklamakan Desert to the north, you’ll find the Tibet Autonomous Region, sat upon the Tibetan Plateau.

Home to the world-famous spiritual leader, The Dalai Lama, here you will not only find awe-inspiring views of the world’s highest mountains but also the opportunity for unparalleled high-altitude walks, mesmerising monasteries and one of the most unique and inviting cultures in the world.

Tibet is also known for its intricate and tumultuous history in which its independence has been a central topic. Stretching back to the mid-7th century, when Songtsan Gampo established the unified Tibetan Empire, it’s history outlines Chinese and Mongol control, as well as a British invasion.

Much of Tibet’s rich cultural heritage was laid in ruins due to the Communist government-inspired Cultural Revolution movement between 1966 and 1976. However, tensions have since somewhat calmed, allowing Tibet’s rich traditional culture to gradually recover.

Its capital Lhasa is truly a one-of-a-kind destination and upon arrival, you’ll understand why Lhasa means “place of the gods”. As one of the world’s highest cities, the remote location of Tibet’s capital makes it a thoroughly exclusive destination, with more than 1,000 years of cultural and spiritual history.

Not to be missed are Potala Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the old chief residence of the Dalai Lama; the graceful Lhasa Zhol Pillar, which is inscribed with what may be the oldest known example of Tibetan writing; the Norbulingka Palace, once the Dalai Lama’s Summer Palace; and the Jokhang temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Barkhor pilgrim circuit and for some, the most the most sacred and important temple in Tibet.

Located at the bottom of a small basin surrounded by the Himalaya Mountains, Lhasa features mostly uninhabited marshlands to the Nnrth and an area of great scenic beauty to the south where the Kyi River – the ‘merry blue waves’ – flows through. Lhasa is surrounded by three parks, the Norbulingka – the largest man-made garden in Tibet, the Shugtri and the Lukhang, and spending time within them is an integral part of life in this city.

Very few place names in the world evoke such powerful images as Tibet – it remains endlessly mysterious and fascinating, and whilst it bears many similarities to mainland China, it offers an entirely unique culture and experience at the same time.

  • Barkhor temple circuit
  • Visit the Norbulingka Palace
  • Explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site Potala Palace

Tibet is best visited in April and May or September and October. By travelling during this high season, you’ll avoid the peak of the summer rains and the harsh winter snow.

Luxury Tibet Holidays

Tibet is one of the world’s most remote, and least-travelled destinations and has traditionally been the go-to of choice for spiritual seekers, adventurers and wanderers. Today, luxury holidays to Tibet are opening up the region to visitors in a whole new way and Lightfoot Travel has travelled there to make sure we tailor the best holiday for you.

Monasteries still hum with the morning chanting of monks and prayer flags ripple in the wind against the backdrop of dramatic mountain ranges, including the world’s highest peak (Everest), one of the highest lakes (the Lhagba Pool), and the highest railway in the world.

Lhasa is the cultural heart of Tibet, and many of the most spectacular sites are found here, including the immense 1000-roomed Potala Palace , once the seat of the Tibetan government and the traditional winter home of the Dalai Lama. Here, you can take a shopping trip with a difference in Barkhor street, which winds around Jokhang Temple. This busy marketplace is a pilgrim circuit – according to local tradition you should walk clockwise as you bargain for souvenirs.

Shigatse is Tibet’s second largest city and once the capital of the Tsang kingdom. One of the highlights is the majestic, golden-roofed Tashi Lhunpo Monastery, founded in 1447 by the first Dalai Lama, who is buried there. Explore the maze of paved alleyways and discover more about monastery life.

Tibet hasn’t always been easily accessible to travellers, but a new crop of airports, infrastructure and stylish boutique hotels are paving the way for tourism in the region – all the more reason to experience this incredible land while it’s still untouched.

The landmark of Tibet

Luxury Tibet Tours

The landscapes and mysterious culture on the roof of the world make Tibet an unforgettable travel destination. As you explore the once-forbidden land, you’ll savor insider experiences, unique cultural interactions and a host of extraordinary moments on one of the Tibet luxury tours.

You will roam around towering monasteries, ringing bells, chanting monks and spinning prayer wheels as you travel through the ancient Kingdom of Tibet. In Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, visit the 7th-century former winter residence of the Dalai Lama, the grand Potala Palace. Explore the revered Jokhang Temple and sprawling Sera Monastery. Browse the shops on Barkhor Street for traditional Tibetan handicrafts, amulets and religious paintings.

As a barren land at first, Norbulingka was initially nothing but full of overgrown weeds and infested wild animals. The 7th Dalai Lama was attracted to this place because of the scrub growth alongside and beautiful scenery in summer. As a result, he would like to pitch camp to spend his whole summertime there. This place was finally constructed in the year of 1755 by the 7th Dalai Lama to meet guests, organize ceremonies and most importantly, handle political issues.

Discover the cultural treasures at Drepung Monastery; pay a visit to a local family for some refreshments and conversation; explore Samding Monastery - the only Tibetan monastery which is taken charge by a woman on an island in the middle of remarkable Lake Yamdrok; see Samye Monastery - the first monastery and palace, to feel the profound history of Tibetan Buddhism; visit the Everest Base Camp, the starting point for the expeditions that attempt to conquer the world's highest mountain, etc. During your journey, pass through striking pastoral landscapes and ascend to dizzying heights, you will find your desired Tibet.

Our travel experts know this vast land well and can work out an efficient route that caters to your interests, delivering a personalized trip like no other. The service will be right there with you throughout your travels in Tibet to make sure you have an authentic, innovative and memorable journey.

It Just Got Easier for Americans to Visit China—Here's What to Know

By Matt Ortile

Image may contain Architecture Building Housing and House

I was recently applying for a new passport, dreaming of all the new stamps and visas I’d collect, when I wondered: “Can Americans travel to China?” As it turns out, some recent policy changes out of Beijing have made it easier than ever to marvel at the Great Wall of China , take in the cosmopolitan bustle of Shanghai , and devour spicy Sichuan -style dishes at the source.

As of January 1, 2024, US travelers applying for tourist visas to China are no longer required to present proof of roundtrip tickets for travel, hotel reservations, or specific itineraries. The development came after a declaration in December by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in the United States that states both countries mutually agreed to simplify the visa process in an effort to “facilitate people-to-people exchanges between China and the United States.”

To learn more about how US passport holders can travel to China, I reached out to travel specialists with deep expertise in tourism in China and Asia more broadly: Mei Zhang, the founder of WildChina and a member of Condé Nast Traveler ’s Global Advisory Board ; and Catherine Heald, co-founder and CEO of Remote Lands , a luxury travel advisor specializing in destinations throughout Asia.

Here’s what you need to know about traveling to China with a US passport in 2024.

Can Americans travel to China?

Yes, Americans can travel to China for tourism purposes. The country previously upheld travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, from early 2020 to March 2023. At the time, a quarantine period was required of anyone who entered the country; additionally, Zhang of WildChina explains, flights between the United States and China were extremely limited, and so tickets were prohibitively expensive .

Interest in travel to China has increased in recent months, says Heald of Remote Lands, thanks to the new visa application rules that have come into effect in 2024: “Even when the country opened, obtaining a visa was somewhat difficult, so it did not really see an influx of travelers from the US until this year.”

What kind of visa do I need to visit China?

US passport holders need a visa to visit China, obtained in advance of travel, i.e. there is no “visa on arrival” option. Tourist visas valid for ten years and good for multi-entry use must be acquired though a Chinese embassy or consulate, or a visa service. Currently, for US citizens, the cost for a tourist visa for travel to China is $140, whether for single-use or multi-entry use. This is a reduced fee, in effect until December 31, 2024 .

According to the Chinese embassy in the United States, the tourist visa application requirements include: a passport with at least six-months’ validity and two blank pages; a photocopy of the passport’s ID page; a completed application form, filled out online and printed; proof of residence, like a driver’s license or a utility bill; and a completed “ Where You Stay Form ” that attests the applicant is currently applying for a visa from within the US.

Admittedly, the steps are a bit more involved than the path you’d walk (or fly) to countries to which US citizens easily have access, or to destinations that offer visa-on-arrival programs. “When it feels too convoluted to navigate on your own, we recommend using a visa service like CIBT to make it easier,” Zhang says.

If you’re just transiting through China (if you have a 12-hour layover in Shanghai, for example, and want to go into the city before flying to your final stop), you’re in luck: Heald says that in certain Chinese cities, foreign nationals from 54 countries, including the US, are eligible for the 24-, 72-, or 144-hour transit visa-free policies, as long as they stay within certain areas and can present proof of confirmed dates of travel to a third country.

Image may contain City Architecture Building Cityscape Urban Outdoors Nature and Water

For first-timers visiting China, experts suggest an itinerary that includes one, two, or all three of the Chinese metropolitan triumvirate: Beijing, Xi’an, and Shanghai.

When is the best time to visit China?

Spring and fall are the best times to travel in China, according to Zhang and Heald. “ Summer can be very hot, depending on where you are in China, and also busier than usual, since kids are on summer break and traveling with their families during this time,” Zhang says.

She also recommends to plan travel around the calendar of Chinese national holidays, since travel can be more challenging due to the heightened amount of activity. “The main holidays to avoid are Chinese New Year, the May Day holiday in the first week of May, and Golden Week, which is the first week of October).” It’s a fair point, but if those times are what work for you, don’t let the craze of the crowds stop you. I imagine it would truly be an awesome sight to see, a Chinese city or town celebrating the Lunar New Year .

I’m visiting China for the first time—what city should I visit?

Both Zhang and Heald suggest an itinerary that includes one, two, or all three of the Chinese metropolitan triumvirate: Beijing , Xi’an, and Shanghai. Go for the Forbidden City and the Great Wall in the capital, see the iconic Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an, and head to the Bund for the skyscraper-laden cosmopolitan side of China (where you can stay at the Peninsula Shanghai , an editor-favorite hotel featured on the Condé Nast Traveler Gold List for 2024 ).

If you’re keen to get a little bit of all three—including the Sichuan city of Chengdu—Heald recommends the Classic China tour offered by Remote Lands that highlights some of the country’s most significant historical and cultural sites. (Also: pandas.) Speaking of nature, don’t be afraid to venture out of the cities, if time permits. For getting off the beaten path, Zhang recommends the mountainous province of Yunnan, while Heald mentions that travelers seeking spiritual experiences are going to Tibet (which requires another entry permit).

What else should Americans know before traveling to China?

It’s important to remember that the Great Firewall of China is very real: Websites like Google (including Gmail), YouTube, Facebook, and others are blocked in the country, Heald says, “especially if they touch on sensitive subjects.” She recommends downloading a VPN (virtual private network) to all of your devices before entering China, which allows you to freely use the Internet as usual. “If you do not wish to get a VPN, then plan accordingly and notify any concerned parties that you may be out of touch for a few days,” she says.

Still, China is changing at a rapid pace, Zhang notes. “Some of our recent travelers have described it as stepping into the future .” In the main cities, taxi cars are mostly electric. Sustainability is taking a leading role in development, and high-speed trains connect the entire country, with new rail lines opening regularly. Digital payments have swept every corner of the nation—“everybody from luxury stores to street food carts has a QR code”—and almost no one carries cash or credit cards. Zhang says, “For those who have visited China before, it has changed. And for those who have not visited before, you’re in for something wholly unexpected indeed.”

Is Luxury Travel in Bhutan Truly Sustainable?

H ow to Travel Better is a new monthly column with Condé Nast Traveler’s sustainability editor Juliet Kinsman . In this series, Juliet introduces us to the sustainability heroes she meets, signposts the experiences that are enhancing our world, and shares the little and big ways we can all travel better.

My heart skipped several beats as our plane navigated the cloud-haloed, sharp peaks of the Himalayas before easing itself onto the landing strip in Paro. Few pilots are even qualified to negotiate the strip, which is only the size of a couple football fields and is surrounded by low-rise, green-roofed, whitewash-and-timber buildings. The only passengers on the tarmac, we padded— wide-eyed, slack-jawed—into the tiny arrivals lounge where we were greeted by bucolic scenes hand-painted on the wattle-and-daub walls. An independent bookshop and art displays stood where one would expect to see Duty Free items.

The passport control officer I was assigned opened my stamp-filled passport and smiled, saying: “Oh wow, you travel a lot". This contrasted sharply with my transit through Bangkok, where I was scolded: “Passport full. Get new one .” At 7,000 feet above sea level, Bhutan's only international airport had already been a breath of fresh air. We breezed through to be welcomed by Pencho, our guide, and Kencho, our driver. As we settled into the car, I asked how many visitors the country might have right at that moment, feeling very lucky to see so few around me. “Maybe 200 or 300,” Pencho replied. “It’s high season.”

In terms of world history, but a blink of an eye ago Bhutan was still largely hidden from the rest of the world. It has only been a nation in its own right since 1907, but the hydro-powered, carbon-neutral country always indexes high among the most sustainable in the world. This is the reason why I arrived with expectations as high as the Himalayas: I wanted to better understand their low-traffic, high-spend tourism strategy—the sustainable development fee they charge travelers is a well-known example of this—that is so celebrated, alongside their Gross National Happiness metric. I especially wanted to see how this reconciles with ambitious developments like the Mindfulness City in Gelephu in the south, which aims to be a modern Buddhist lifestyle destination and economic mega hub.

I’m an independent traveler, but relinquishing all planning to our MyBhutan hosts was incredibly pleasant. They were to arrange an itinerary that would have us experience Bhutan in a way that felt honest and genuine, and during which we’d leave money in the hands of those who care about local communities and nature. In Paro, for instance, our first night was spent at Bhutanese-owned Zhiwa Ling Heritage , which proudly displays the design and craftsmanship of regional artisans and prioritizes hiring locals.

Bhutan's hotel industry has always been sensitively regulated by the authorities. Aman and COMO Hotels and Resorts were among the first five-star international hotel brands to entice discerning visitors in the early noughties, and their luxury circuits that followed; connecting Paro, Thiumpu, Punakha, Gangtey, and Bumthang set the bar. More recently, sustainability and wellness leader Six Senses has created its own daisy chain of sleek, eco-conscious retreats . And with Africa’s andBeyond importing their safari approach to Bhutan, wildlife, too, is in the spotlight. But more recently, there has also been an emphasis on homegrown hospitality, and home stays that offer a taste of everyday Bhutanese living are on the rise. One such homestay, the Mendrelgang Heritage Home in Punakha, is an ancestral home that presents an authentic setting, inviting its guests to step into a family’s real-life history.

Our MyBhutan-planned itinerary took us to a different stay every night, and from Paro in the west to Gangtey about 100 miles west. The most challenging planned activity was a three-hour hike up a steep, wooded cliff to Tiger’s Nest , an iconic 17th-century monastery. I couldn’t help noticing that, despite being a major tourist attraction, the majestic temple (as well as the dzongs we visited later) never felt busy. Another day we crossed a prayer-flag-festooned suspension bridge to Happiness Farm in Paro, for a fascinating first-hand tutorial on the centuries-old technique of natural dyeing and weaving with Aum Karma, its nangi-aum (lady of the house). There’s a remarkable national pride in both Bhutan's handmade textiles and traditional clothing: Most men dress in a gho, the elegant knee-high, wide-sleeved robes, while women dress in a hand-woven, ankle-length kira .

Along the drive from Paros through Thimpu, we paused at Dochula Pass, the 10,000-foot-high stop to take in staggering panoramas. We learned from our guide that the geography of this yak-farming terrain has been greatly affected by rising temperatures and less-predictable seasons. Another day, while tree planting with the NGO Green Bhutan, we received a lesson on the importance of biodiversity at the Royal Botanical Park, Lampeiri. And one evening, after dark, we rafted past Punakha Dzong—the palace of great happiness. As it glowed by night on the banks of the Pho Chhu (Male) and Mo Chhu (Female) rivers in the Punakha Valley, we turned to Bhutan’s more meditative side, underscoring that true luxury is a feeling .

Humans are the only creatures that explore for the sake of exploring. We often trot out clichéd catchphrases such as “travel as a force for good,” but what does that really mean? How can we travel the world in a way that genuinely benefits us, and those hosting us? Bhutan, a country shut for two years due to the pandemic, is seeing one in seven young adults leaving in search of higher-paid jobs overseas. Gelephu Mindfulness City is being envisioned as a way to address that—to combine business, culture, and spirituality in a way that allows for progressive growth and for a little of the outside world to seep in. To get this done without compromising on what makes Bhutan so precious will be the challenge. After all, as a visitor, the cultural authenticity free from outside influences is what makes time in the Land of the Thunder Dragon so enriching.

Most of all, Bhutan was a reminder that our greatest privileges on this visit involved not lavish facilities or expensive amenities but pristine, untouched nature and a sense of wonder at a simpler, rural living not yet wiped out by modern progress. Did we fall in love with this magical mountain kingdom? Na ma sa me, which translates from Dzongkha as ‘infinitely.’ Or, quite literally, “between the earth and the sky.”
