THANK YOU, Victoria!

The show on January 19 th  at the Ulumbarra Theatre in Bendigo is now SOLD OUT!

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

Due to factors beyond our control, it is with deep regret that we have to announce that the Trip The Switch event which was to take place in Ipswich on July 3rd has been cancelled today based on advice from Queensland Health.

With the unfolding Covid-19 situation in Sydney and Queensland where both governments have imposed new restrictions and/or lockdowns due to the increased risk of transmission with the Delta Variant and Alpha Variant, tough restrictions have been implemented that prevent people from the Greater Sydney Metropolitan Area, where key band and crew members from several of the bands appearing at the event live, from entering Queensland.

The organisers, artists and technicians had applied for Travel Exemptions for these key personnel to be able to perform at Trip The Switch and had provided a detailed substantial Covid-19 management plan for them. However, given the unfolding and expanding pandemic fears in Sydney and Brisbane, the department saw the risk of transmission as potentially too great.

Because of this, the organisers have made the difficult decision to cancel the event.

Ticketholders will be contacted by Ticketmaster during Monday June 28th regarding refunds - please do not contact them before that as they will not be in a position to process refunds until Monday - and we urge anyone who had booked accommodation or made travel arrangements to cancel them today or as soon as possible.

We are sorry to disappoint our ICEHOUSE fans and friends - the band looks forward to performing again whenever that may be possible and to seeing you there.

It is with great regret that ICEHOUSE announces that, due to Victoria’s current Covid-19 restrictions on gatherings, the performance at Bendigo’s Ulumbarra Theatre, scheduled for next Thursday June 24th will have to be cancelled.

Yesterday's announcements from the Victorian Government severely limit the number of patrons who can attend a venue and these mean that it isn’t possible for the previously Sold Out event to take place.

As ICEHOUSE has no touring plans at present where another date could be set, the band and promoter, Regional Touring, reluctantly agreed today to cancel the performance and refund ticketholders.

Everyone involved is saddened by having to do so and apologise for any inconvenience caused to the band’s fans and supporters as well as the local businesses, technical crew and other staff who are affected.

Ulumbarra Theatre box office will be in touch tomorrow (Friday June 18th) from 10am to process refunds to all ticket holders. There is no need to contact the venue directly.

ICEHOUSE looks forward to a time when the band can get back to perform in Bendigo.

Icehouse and Simple Minds To Reunite For Red Hot Summer 2024 Tour

by Paul Cashmere on July 30, 2023

in News , Noise Pro

Red Hot Summer will recreate the historic 1981 touring line-up with Icehouse and Simple Minds together again on the same bill.

In 1981 Icehouse toured the UK for the first time supporting Simple Minds. The favour was reversed when on the Australian leg of the same tour, Simple Minds toured Australia for the first time opening for Icehouse.

Jim Kerr said, “we had the best time during that six-week period, and we’re ecstatic to be able to come back and to do it all over again with our mates, Icehouse! We love everything about this band and Australia. We are always welcomed with open arms and have such a special bond with our Aussie fans. We can’t wait to get back there and play in some of the best outdoor locations in your beautiful country.”

Iva Davies said, “back in 1981, on ICEHOUSE’s first journey overseas, we were introduced to Simple Minds and their great stage presence when we went on the same tour supporting them around the UK. It was an exciting time and we all got on so well that we asked Simple Minds to support us when we returned to Australia. They did and Australians became one of the most welcoming audiences in the world for them. I’m really looking forward to our co-headlining tour next year – it will be an opportunity to relive some memories and thrilling to see how far we’ve all come since those first shows.”

For 2024, The Red Hot Summer tour series two will feature the two bands together again with Noiseworks, Daryl Braithwaite and Bachelor Girl also on the line-up.

LIVE REVIEW: RED HOT SUMMER TOUR – Series Two featuring Simple Minds, Icehouse, Noiseworks, Daryl Braithwaite & Bachelor Girl

Bachelor Girl opened today’s line up with a short but very sweet 40-minute set. 2024 also celebrates the 25th anniversary of their debut album ‘Waiting For The Day’. It’s hard to fathom where time has gone. Ageless and timeless the duo of Tania Doko and James Roche transported us back to that debut. The remainder of Bachelor Girl consists of Hayden Meggitt (Drums) and Michael Paynter on guitar.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

Live, Bachelor Girl sounds amazing and this configuration of the band is exceptional. Despite James’s iPad and computer suffering from the heat and failing to work, it was the perfect reminder of those classic songs. A surprise inclusion of a cover of the Motels ‘Total Control’ was well received and their latest single ‘Calling Out Your Name’ made for a great way to kick of the day.

Bachelor Girl_RHS_11 Feb 2024 (13)

The usual hits of the era being represented today was pumped out between bands as the crew worked tirelessly configuring the stage for the next act. It’s moments where songs that are a little out of place could actually belong. I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid at hearing ‘Thunderstruck’, ‘ Sweet Child of Mine’ or even ‘Enter Sandman’ being blasted through the PA in fact I would have almost expected it, but when ‘Enter Sandman’ forms a part of Daryl Braithwaite ’s intro tape you take notice.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

The band took their positions on stage and sure enough just as the song had built to where it starts the verse the band launch into a killer version of 1976’s ‘Blues Walkin’. Daryl and band were hot off the mark and simply sounded amazing. Donning blue zinc cream which his band mates likened to Braveheart war paint the banter was strong on stage. Tearing through a set of Australian standards Braithwaite was not only paying homage to his Sherbet career but his solo career.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

During ‘As The Days Go By’ we were all invited to join in and participate in a sing-a-long which had two parts a short part and a part where he asked us to hang on the by part of the chorus. Braithwaite claiming that Mornington couldn’t get it right yesterday he had high hopes for the Yarra Valley crowd. Unfortunately we didn’t get it quite right either. Braithwaite and his band took the opportunity to throw t-shirts into the crowd of his now famous Byron Bay photo taken during ‘the Horses’ a few years back.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

This led to a set closing, full crowd participation sing along of ‘The Horses’ which marked the end of a short but really enjoyable set from Daryl and Co. His band is simply superb and allow for Braithwaite to effortlessly shine. As a huge Sherbet fan, I wished that there were a couple more song from that classic catalogue. Given it was a short set we were delivered a bonafide set of classics.

Daryl Braithwaite Setlist: Blues Walkin’, All I Do, Rise, Howzat, Love Songs, As The Days Go By, Higher than Hope, One Summer, Horses

Noiseworks are one of those Australian bands that never cease to deliver, with a songbook so rich in hits it’s always a guaranteed good time. Today was no exception. Playing in the hottest part of the day, the band matched that heat with their performance. From opening keyboard riff of ‘Touch’ the now rather hot and sun beaten crowd showed no signs of losing energy or passion for the songs as they danced, bounced and sang every word.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

The heartfelt dedication to Stu ‘Chet’ Fraser that introduced ‘Heart and Soul’ from 2022’s comeback album ‘Evolution’ was a tribute to their brother and the songs he wrote with them. It’s great to see that ‘Heart and Soul’ now sits very comfortable among the hits as a fan favourite.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

Seeing three of the five founding members on stage is always a treat. Steve Balbi (Bass) and Kevin Nichol (Drums) along with Jon Stevens has a synergy that is pure magic to witness. Stevens’ solo band guitarist Tim Henwood filled some might big shoes today. Not only did he fill those shoes, he filled them perfectly as if they were his own.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

Henwood’s playing and backing vocals were integral in taking us back to the magic sound and tones the band had in its original line up. That in itself is no mean feat. On keyboards was Tony Featherstone (Pseudo Echo) who played the parts of the absent Justin Stanley who resides in the USA these days. Again adding his touch to the songs and melodies of this classic catalogue.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

Steven’s in his between song moments spoke of love, loss, peace and love. Reminding us how important life is and how it should not be taken for granted. He reminded us of the power of music and delivered an as usual flawless performance. There is a magic to this line up in what was a great set.

Noiseworks Setlist: Touch, Burning Feeling, Love Somebody, Heart & Soul, Voice Of Reason, Miles and Miles, In My Youth, No Lies, Take Me Back, Hot Chili Woman, Rock N Roll

Noiseworks_RHS_11 Feb 2024 (20)

For the familiar there isn’t too much that can be said about an Icehouse performance. It is always a trip down the most amazing set of songs. From the outright fun of ‘Walls’ to the sets closing of ‘We Can Get Together’ the Yarra Valley was in full voice and fine form. Watching the way that the audience reacted to their favourite song was a testament to how incredible this bands legacy is. With a set that has a song no newer than 1990 being featured in a set this was a trip back to many in attendances youth. For me it was a series of reminders to a time and place in life where these songs were embedded in pages of my life. I’m sure there were many other who had those same moments.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

Frontman Iva Davies and his partner in musical mischief Paul Gildea have such an unspoken connection and play off each other so well. As a band longtime members Paul Wheeler (Drums), Steve Bull (Bass), Michael Paynter (Keybords/Guitar/Vocals) are on point and provide such a solid field for Davies and Gildea to play on. Recent addition to the band Hugo Lee (Keys/Sax) is a huge talent that has been given room to shine in this line up. Lee has a confidence and presence that is well beyond his years.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

Where I have to truly tip the hat to Icehouse and Davies for being able to still perform songs within the catalogue that even at his vocal peek were near impossible to replicate live vocally. For years now Paynter has been an integral part of the performance of ‘Man Of Colours’ and ‘I Don’t Believe Anymore’. Paynter owns the vocal performances on these song so well it’s hard to now picture him not being the original voice.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

For me the highlight of any Icehouse show is the songs that first introduced me to them when they were known as Flowers. ‘Walls’, ‘Can’t Help Myself’ and ‘We Can Get Together’ all make me smile and much like a reflex have me singing every word. Every time I have been to an Icehouse show I get that same joy, live have never disappointed.

Icehouse Setlist: Walls, Electric Blue , Hey Little Girl, Crazy, No Promises, Touch The Fire, Man Of Colours, I Don’t Believe Anymore, Great Southern Land, Miss Divine, Can’t Help Myself, We Can Get Together

Icehouse_RHS_11 Feb 2024 (15)

There isn’t too much that can be said that hasn’t already about Simple Minds . For a band that is forty-four years young with a list of hits that are indexed in pop culture and again the soundtrack to so many people’s lives, their history is a legacy.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

Again I have to thank my childhood and the institution that was Countdown for giving me the first introduction to them back in 1982. ‘Promised You a Miracle’ was the song. ‘New Gold Dream’ was the album that hooked me. With each album from that point there was a natural progression in the bands style while still staying within the boundaries of the new romantic/new wave genre that they had been put in. That was until 1985 where the band became absolute global household names. As someone that grew up in an era of classic and cult movies who can deny the impact the band had on ‘The Breakfast Club’ soundtrack. ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’. Simple Minds had outgrown a definitive genre and were now a certified international arena rock band.

For the better part of a decade I has a passing interest in the band. Sure, I still listened to each album as they were released, but as we all evolve new genres and styles take us down different paths.  It wasn’t until 1995’s ‘Good News from The Next World’ that I really took notice of Simple Minds again. There was something about that album that recaptured my attention. Perhaps it was harder edge to the album that grabbed me. In all honesty if ‘Good News’ was given the same attention U2 had at the time it would have been one of those albums every household owned. It had all the of the pop sensibilities that defined Simple Minds previously but showed a different side to the band. ‘Good News’ stands the test of time and if you haven’t heard it I urge you to check it out.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

There is something to be said about seeing a band that has such a legacy behind them for the first time. Seeing a band that you have connections with and can take you back to a place and time with a single song. Today I was transported to at least three decades of people, places and times. Realising how engrained songs are in your music muscle memory and are able to sing every word to a song you haven’t heard in years is something remarkable.

From the moment Simple Minds took the stage there was a charm about them. They stood in front of the crowd and gave a bow showing the kind of love and display of respect commonly seen at the end of a show.

The opening keyboard/bass bounce of ‘Waterfront’ lit the fuse of a band simply ignited. Frontman and founding member Jim Kerr has a youthfulness to him as he walked the stage and genuine connected with the crowd while delivering a vocal that is ageless. Kerr’s musical partner since the beginning Charlie Churchill was full of smiles as he grazed his way through the lush licks of ‘Waterfront’. Seeing these two together on stage and still together is something special.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

Rhythm guitarist Gordon Goldie has a presence and character that commands your attention. Bassist Ged Grimes just locks in with the amazing Cherisse Osei forming the rhythm section. Keyboardist Erik Ljunggren’s synth parts are on point and really do shape the whole live sound seemlessly transporting us through the bands signature sounds. Backing vocalist Sarah Brown is the perfect accompaniment to Kerr’s voice. Brown herself has a resume that has worked the best of the very best and has featured on the records of some of my all time favourite artists. If Duran Duran, Stevie Wonder, Roxy Music, George Michael, Simply Red and Pink Floyd aren’t a testament to Brown’s abilities I don’t know what is.

As far as setlists are concerned today we were given a career defining selection of songs that catered to every longtime fan. To have a selection of song that is so strong it was an incredibly well represented a cross section and showcase of what a career that is now in its fifth decade looks like.

While there was no real room for deep cuts in this abbreviated set these was no shortage of hits. Every song had an incredible reaction and connection with the audience involving some incredible audience participation. Most notably in during the extended ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ where Kerr’s conducted every voice in attendance. The pure joy of performing and the energy being sent back to the stage by the crowd shone through in everyone on that stage. To say there was a lot of love at Rochford Wines is an understatement.

From the first to the last note of Simple Minds set everything was exceptional. The sound was possibly the best I have heard in an open outdoor environment.  For anyone that is on the fence about seeing this run of Red Hot Summer shows. I urge you to jump on it because this is one hell of a line up and a day you will remember forever.

Icehouse's Iva Davies & Simple Minds' Jim Kerr: Australian Tour Is The 'Perfect Opportunity To Get Together'

"After touring Australia with Icehouse in 1981, I didn’t think all these years later we’d be coming back with the Icehouse guys again. What a wonderful thing!"

More ICEHOUSE

On Monday, two iconic acts beloved throughout the 80s until now (and likely beyond), Icehouse and Simple Minds , came together to pay tribute to a band they both love, T. Rex . Not only did they cover the hit single Get It On with grace and energy, but the new release also serves as a promotional number for the two bands’ upcoming co-headline run on the Red Hot Summer Tour .

When The Music catches up with Icehouse’s Iva Davies and Simple Minds’ Jim Kerr , the two singers couldn’t be further apart – the Aussie in Sydney and the Scotsman in Italy. But when both of them are on the phone, all you hear is two friends.

In 1981, Simple Minds touched down on Australian soil for the first time after being invited by their good friends, Icehouse.

This tour marks a four-decade-long love affair with their Australian fans, with the bands preparing to perform in Mornington at the Yarra Valley, Bribie Island and Perth in February 2024. They’ll be joined by fellow Australian rock icons Noiseworks , Daryl Braithwaite and Bachelor Girl .

To celebrate the tour, Icehouse and Simple Minds joined forces for Get It On . With Davies revealing that it was Jim’s choice to cover the classic rock tune, Kerr explains, “The first album I ever bought was a T. Rex album,” he says.

Regarding the UK context, a lot of people of his generation said that everything began when David Bowie appeared on Top Of The Pops . For Jim Kerr, the hold music has on his life began two years earlier when T. Rex, led by Marc Bolan, fronted a string of great singles and great albums.

“I would have been 12 or 13 at the time, and that, for me, was the doorway to music. I’m sure that Iva will speak for himself, but one of the great things about meeting Icehouse was that we immediately identified a kindred spirit,” he says. Kerr and Davies agree on T. Rex, David Bowie and Roxy Music but eventually settled on Get It On – a “thrill” to work on, both concur.

Get It On  was released in 1971, originally written by frontman Marc Bolan, and featured on the T. Rex album  Electric Warrior .  Get It On  was a huge hit, peaking at #1 in England and Ireland and #14 in Australia, also reaching #3 in Germany and Switzerland, #6 in Norway and #10 in the US.

Davies details the first time he heard of T. Rex: a former girlfriend worked at a record company and had a vast record collection, amongst which were records by Tyrannosaurus Rex – an even earlier incarnation of T. Rex.

“In fact, there was a very early song called Jewel – slightly obscure, I guess, by comparison with some of the later big singles like Get It On, but in that song, there was a lyric, ‘Her eyes are electric blue’, and that popped up much later in my life with a song that went to into the United States Top 10,” Davies chuckles.

He’s long been fascinated by Marc Bolan and his incredibly simple melodies, “And one of the things I tried to do as a songwriter was write something as direct and uncomplicated as those songs appear to be on the outside, and never really succeeded.

“This is a perfect opportunity to get together with Simple Minds because this song has that very simple structure but a lot of verses and a lot of places to muck around with. We had a lot of fun with it.”

There’s a moment towards the end of the Icehouse and Simple Minds version of Get It On that brings a fresh rock and roll energy to such a well-known song, the two singers meeting for some superb harmonies and percussive elements, adding more depth.

Davies and Kerr admit that any changes to the song were purely coincidental – unplanned, pure spontaneity. “Most of those things are not calculated,” Davies admits, “That's the wonder of playing in a collective that has its own kind of collective mind. When you decide to throw in something like that, nobody can predict that coming. It’s just one of those things that happens. It's a great thing about music, that kind of unpredictability.”

“I’ll go with that as well,” Kerr adds, “It’s all about the feelings – you’re in there with whatever the music’s bringing in, and then you stand up and go, ‘That’s pretty good’.”

When the bands were thinking of a song to cover ahead of this Australian tour, Davies remembers listening to a 1971 Mott The Hoople song, All The Young Dudes , written by David Bowie. The last time Davies and Kerr spoke, things started to click. Davies explains, “There are so many of these gems, and when I thought about releasing this song – the song is decades old now, but it deserves revisiting.”

He continues, “I guess that's probably the best way that I can describe it. It's just such a great, simple, catchy, infectious creation that I'm glad that we're getting the opportunity to kind of give it some air again.” The bands were considering a number of songs, but Kerr, firm in the fact that everyone in their generation knew Get It On was a classic, wanted to pay tribute to a singer and songwriter he believes is underrated.

“I don’t think Marc Bolan gets credit for the work he did,” Kerr states, “I just feel his work and his legacy is not to the proportion that it should be compared to others.” Davies adds, “We were great believers from the beginning; they were a great contributor to my formative years, to the band then known as Flowers . T. Rex are very important to me – this whole catalogue of material, and as Jim says, highly underrated and for the greater part overlooked.”

Sharing the “huge” part Get It On has played in his life, Kerr recalls the days working his first job in a supermarket (“Believe me, it wasn’t a glamorous job,” he laughs) for a couple of hours each day after school, cleaning the butcher’s department. But, the great thing about that job was scoring some much-needed money to buy albums and go to concerts.

He shares, “I remember going in and buying the album and proudly walking around school with Electric Warrior – what a brilliant body of work, my God. I never thought when I was 15 that I myself would end up in bands and that when I did get in a band, we would be so lucky. And after touring Australia with Icehouse in 1981, I didn’t think all these years later we’d be coming back with the Icehouse guys again. What a wonderful thing!”

We lose Kerr on the phone after that statement, but we ask Davies: what is it about Great Southern Land ? What inspires that song’s enduring appeal? And does he feel a sense of pride every time the song plays on the radio, television, or elsewhere?

Davies admits that the song’s impact “becomes more and more of a mystery” in 2023. “That's the honest truth because as time goes by, the fact that the song is in any way, shape or form relevant four decades later just completely baffles me. I have no idea,” he shares.

Davies continues, “I can remember the process of writing it and how desperate my set of priorities were at the time to come up with that difficult second album and enormous amounts of pressure, and the very first thing that came out of that cauldron, as it were, was that song. And so, for me, with all that background behind it, it's a completely different picture than people who were on the receiving end of that first effort.”

When Icehouse tours with Simple Minds next year, Davies is just excited to reunite and catch up with his friend. “We’ll hopefully have lots of opportunities to sit down and have a chat,” Davies says, “because we've both been on the go for a long time. I'd like to think there's going to be an opportunity to just sit around after a show at some point and just talk about stuff.”

Icehouse and Simple Minds will co-headline the Red Hot Summer Tour in February 2024. You can find the tour dates below.

The Living End are an Australian punk rock band formed in 1994. Since 2002 the line-up consists of Chris Cheney, Scott Owen and Andy Strachan. The band rose to fame in 1997 after the release of their double A-sided single, “Second Solution” / “Prisoner of Society”. They have released eight studio albums and have had two No. 1 debuts on the Australian Albums Aria Chart.  They have also gained chart success in the United States and United Kingdom.  The Living End are one of Australia’s most ferocious live acts, consistently headlining festivals around the country. Their blistering live performances have earned the band an enviable position of one of Australia’s greatest live bands.

Birds of Tokyo have grown from independent roots to become one of this country’s most popular rock bands.  The Perth five piece have released three chart topping albums driven by top 10 hits like ‘Good Lord’, ‘Plans’, ‘Unbreakable” and ‘Lanterns’.  One of Triple J’s three most played artists of this millennium, they are also the only artist in history to win ‘Rock Work of the Year’ on five separate occasions at the APRA Awards. Having performed twice at the AFL Grand Final and the NRL’s “State Of Origin”, and toured as special guests for everyone from Muse and Bon Jovi to Midnight Oil and Cold Chisel, Birds Of Tokyo’s songs have become a soundtrack for contemporary Australia.

Multi-platinum selling Pete Murray has released 7 albums and 2 EPs over an impressive career and is one of only a few Australian artists with over 1.2 million album sales under his belt, receiving 17 ARIA nominations throughout his career. Murray’s first three albums all reached #1 on the Australian music charts and his first album FEELER reached number 1 and remained in the Top 100 for two and a half years. BEST OF is a collection of Murray’s most popular singles of the past 20 years.

There’s a moment in most artists’ young lives when they realise music will shape their future and define who they are. Kasey Chambers didn’t have to wait for that moment to arrive. Music is part of her DNA. The Captain (1999) remains one of the most extraordinary and lauded debuts by an Australian artist in any genre. Songs such as the title track, ‘Cry Like a Baby’ and ‘These Pines’ boast a maturity beyond her years and a wealth of Americana-styled musical influences, yet the album has Australia and family at its core, ingredients that have been a staple of Kasey’s songwriting ever since then. Greater success was to follow. Barricades & Brickwalls (2001), Kasey’s second album, broke more ground, winning best album at the 2002 ARIAs and landing her at the top of the pop charts in Australia and the third album, Wayward Angel (2004) was another monster success, going straight to No.1 in Australia and producing a string of singles. Further successful albums followed with Carnival (2006), Rattlin’ Bones (2008), Kasey Chambers, Poppa Bill and the Little Hillbillies (2009), Little Bird (2010), and Storybook .

Born into Australian rock royalty and influenced by the music her father, Jimmy Barnes, recorded and played, Mahalia naturally began singing at a very young age. As an artist, she’s drawn to guitar-driven gutsy soul, rock and blues, and is inspired by acts like Ike and Tina Turner and legendary queen of soul Aretha Franklin.

Before the pandemic shut down so much of the live performance industry, Mahalia Barnes  and The Soul Mates toured Australia non-stop, playing supports for the likes of US hip hop greats The Roots, Lionel Richie, UK singer James Morrison and gospel/soul legend Mavis Staples, as well as playing festivals and headline shows of their own.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

RED HOT SUMMER   TOUR is thrilled to announce its next series of dates for the 2024 season from one of Australia’s most sought-after summer festivals.  These iconic outdoor shows will take place centre stage in Mornington, Yarra Valley, Bribie Island & Perth, and for series two, this mega-line-up will be co-headlined by SIMPLE MINDS and ICEHOUSE.

It’s been over 40 years since Scottish superstars,  SIMPLE MINDS,  toured Australia for the first time in 1981 when they were invited by their good friends,  ICEHOUSE . History repeats itself as they come together on stage all these decades later.  Says Jim Kerr , “ we had the best time during that six-week period, and we’re ecstatic to be able to come back and to do it all over again with our mates, Icehouse!  We love everything about this band and Australia. We are always welcomed with open arms and have such a special bond with our Aussie fans.  We can’t wait to get back there and play in some of the best outdoor locations in your beautiful country.”

Iva Davies went on to say “b ack in 1981, on ICEHOUSE’s first journey overseas, we were introduced to Simple Minds and their great stage presence when we went on the same tour supporting them around the UK.

With a career spanning over 45 years,  ICEHOUSE  is one of Australia’s most iconic bands, transcending age groups with their hit songs, well known and loved by audiences across generations, playing to sell-out, capacity audiences in Australia, New Zealand and throughout the world.  Formed by  Iva Davies , the band’s frontman and musical creative force,  ICEHOUSE  went on to have an amazing 28 Platinum albums, eight Top 10 albums and over thirty Top 40 singles.

ICEHOUSE’s  unofficial Australian anthem, Great Southern Land, has been a part of almost every Australian’s summer soundtrack for the past 40 years and in 2014, it was inducted into the National Film and Sound Archive’s Sounds of Australia registry. It’s also been remixed a number of times, most notably Bill Laswell’s  The Great Southern Mix , clocking in at almost 16 minutes, and the  Byrralku Dhangudha remix  from 1994, which features Indigenous musicians playing and singing the chorus in their own language. Its message is as current and relevant today as it was when it first appeared.

In 2017, the band received another tribute when Qantas invited the public to vote for the names of the planes for their new fleet of Dreamliner 787-9s. Out of over 60,000 name suggestions submitted, Great Southern Land won the honour of the very first plane in the fleet being named after the iconic hit.  In the same year,  ICEHOUSE  also celebrated 40 years of live performance with a national Australian tour and several outdoor performances in New Zealand and has continued to perform selected concerts for sell-out audiences in both countries since then.

SIMPLE MINDS  are one of the UK’s most successful bands that have achieved worldwide success. Having sold over 60 million albums, they have experienced a remarkable journey since releasing their debut album  Life In A Day  in 1979. Over the course of their stunning career,  SIMPLE MINDS  have sold out stadiums and arenas across the globe. Constantly evolving, the band’s rousing choruses and booming atmospherics made them one of the most iconic bands of the 80s. Their trademark sound has earned them massive hits – with songs such as  Promised You A Miracle, Glittering Prize, Don’t You (Forget About Me), Alive and Kicking, Sanctify Yourself, Belfast Child  and  Let There Be Love  dominating the airwavesglobally .

A ustralia was the first country in the world, outside of the UK, to embrace  SIMPLE MINDS , giving the band its first-ever hit single  Love Song  and first gold album ‘New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84)’. The love affair has continued ever since.

Noiseworks  provided the soundtrack to every big night in the 1980s, with rock anthems  No Lies, Take Me Back, Hot Chilli Woman, Touch , and countless others. Get ready to rock as the original members reform to honour the memory of their co-founder and guitarist, the late, great, Stuart ‘Chet’ Fraser. Jon Stevens, Steve Balbi, Kevin Nicol, and Justin Stanley will be joined by very special guest Jack Jones on guitar and vocals. With the release of their new 2022 album, along with all their legendary hits,  Noiseworks  will reignite a passion for rock n roll!

Daryl Braithwaite  is an iconic Australian singer/songwriter and ARIA Hall Of Fame Inductee. As the frontman and vocalist for the 1970s band Sherbet,  Braithwaite  rode a wave of local and international success with songs such as  Howzat  and  Summer Love  propelling the band to superstar status.

Braithwaite  went on to embark on a highly successful solo career which included a No. 1 ARIA Album Chart for his album Edge (1988), featuring the hit singles  As The Days Go By  and  One Summer .  Braithwaite’s  1990 follow-up album Rise included the single  The Horses  which reached No. 1 on the ARIA Singles Chart and to this day remains an anthem for generations of Australians. In 2020, he joined a host of local and international artists to perform at Fire Fight Australia, Concert For National Bushfire Relief in front of an audience in excess of 70,000 at Sydney’s ANZ Stadium.

In 1992,  Tania Doko  and  James Roche  formed  BACHELOR GIRL , and the duo became one of the most loved Australian acts of the 90s & early 2000s, enjoying Australian and international success in Asia, Scandinavia and the US (including signing with the legendary Clive Davis at Arista Records). Standing out with their exceptional songwriting and  Tania’s  warm, powerful vocal, both PPCA and APRA have reported a massive achievement for the band – their hit single  Buses and Trains  was the most played Australian composition on Australian radio in its first year of release and during the last 25 years overall. In 1999,  Buses and Trains  also received the coveted APRA ‘Song of the Year’ award, while the critically acclaimed debut album ‘Waiting for the Day’ spawned five chart-topping, radio-friendly singles (including  Treat Me Good  and  Permission To Shine ), reached double platinum certification and an ARIA win to the duo for ‘Producer of the Year’.

After a brief hiatus to pursue their individual musical paths as writers and producers for outside artists in Sweden and the U.K,  Tania  and  James  reunited to release their socially conscious single  Speak , in 2018. With their hit-studded and dynamic live set,  Bachelor Girl  have secured impressive support slots, including international heavyweights Eurythmics and The Goo Goo Dolls. More recently, the band has special guested on widely popular festival gigs such as Day on the Green (with John Farnham, Daryl Braithwaite et al.), the Red Hot Summer tour, and can also add Icehouse to the list of iconic acts they have toured with.

Simple Minds to Headline the Red Hot Summer Tour 2024

By Music Feeds

Scottish new wave luminaries Simple Minds will co-headline the second Red Hot Summer Tour of 2024. The group responsible for the 1985 mega-hit ‘Don’t You (Forget About Me)’ will share headline duties with their old friends and 80s pop-rock contemporaries, Icehouse .

Series one of the Red Hot Summer Tour will bring Jimmy Barnes, Birds of Tokyo, The Living End and more to regional locations such as Kiama, Mornington and Launceston throughout January and February 2024. Series two will visit Mornington, the Yarra Valley, Bribie Island and Perth over two weeks in February. More details below.

Simple Minds – ‘Love Song’

The upcoming Red Hot Summer Tour marks a reunion of sorts for Simple Minds and Icehouse. When the Glaswegian band first visited Australia, in 1981, it was at the invitation of their friends in Icehouse. The two bands met during Icehouse’s first UK tour, on which they supported Simple Minds.

“We had the best time during that six-week period,” Simple Minds’ lead vocalist Jim Kerr said of the band’s first Australian tour. “We’re ecstatic to be able to come back and to do it all over again with our mates, Icehouse! We love everything about this band and Australia.”

Icehouse leader Iva Davies expressed a similar sentiment. “I’m really looking forward to our co-headlining tour next year – it will be an opportunity to relive some memories and thrilling to see how far we’ve all come since those first shows.”

Noiseworks , Daryl Braithwaite and Bachelor Girl will join the lineup for the shows in Mornington, Yarra Valley and Bribie Island, while just Bachelor Girl will be there to support Simple Minds and Icehouse in Perth, the only all ages show of the bunch.

Live Review: Red Hot Summer Tour 2024 in Perth – Simple Minds, ICEHOUSE and Bachelor Girl in Concert

21 February 2024 at Kings Park, Perth Western Australia

Review by  Sheldon Ang

Photography by  Sheldon Ang Photography

Like in a scene of the 80’s, the performer is spellbindingly animated, carving through the dancefloor with moves that would make excite a yoga through the bending and stretching on stage. Age is just a number; so they say, and he proves them right; he bends his back like a limbo kid, then resting his back on the stage as he sings the crescendo. As he reaches the end of the high notes, he flips back to his feet, taking off from 1985 in a scene from The Breakfast Club. Molly Ringwall would be chuff. He urges the crowd to sing along…then in Italian…in French…in Australian…so it goes on and on as they say, la la la la…la la la la…la la la la…for five minutes and a few seconds. The timeless sentiments fused into a time machine that exploded. It was the anthem for many audience here. It was a masterpiece and still is one of the most exciting bangers in the living rooms as it’s in the clubs.

The iconic track, the seminal song that launched Simple Minds as a global sensation is far from a one hit wonder. The band have travel the globe on the back of over 20 albums that have peaked within Top 40 in the UK Album charts, with similar success In the UK Singles Chart. The band from Glasgow have enjoyed similar commercial success particularly in Australia as he acknowledged “Australia is the first international country that gave us success”

The evening sparked with Bachelor Girl. Formed in 1992 by Tania Doko and James Roche, they provided the entertainment and impressive guest slots for the likes of Eurythmics, Goo Goo Dolls and now they can include Simple Minds into their resume. For those who are here purely for ICEHOUSE and Simple Minds, they would realise that Bachelor Girl had many memorable hits such as Buses and Trains (the ‘Hey Mum..why didn’t you tell me’ song) and Permission to Shine.  Also added was The Motel’s Total Control (this writer got excited hoping it would be Only The Lonely). Tania weaved her hair like a model in a shampoo ad, as the fiery defied gravity.  The energy was set.

ICEHOUSE further thawed the night with the track ICEHOUSE under the stars of the spectacular summer night at King Park and the Botanical Garden. When Electric Blue echoed across the lawn by the third track, the night transformed into the biggest karaoke spectacle of the Great Southern Land. Then this,

You’ve gotta be crazy, baby…To want a guy like me …you’ve gotta be out of your mind…Crazy , Well it must be some kind of mistake, to fall in love with me…

The nostalgic montage on the big screen capturing the music video of the young Iva Davies in his mullet-esque days drove the fans deeper into the primary and high school realms, while enjoying the exhibition of a Sydney boy larrikinism who had a dream…and still living the fantasy over four decades on.  The nostalgia surfaced – the live music, the video – all sparking the burning memory from the yesteryear as Iva Davies took us through the journey of our lives.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

The rhythm guitarist Paul Gildea was arguably the supporting actor of the night. The sax by Hugo Lee was eye catching. Standing before the screen, his silhouette glued to the raised saxophone was breathtaking, carving a statuesque figurine instilled in the minds of many for some time.

The unofficial anthem Great Southern Land got the fans onto their feet, with a picture of Ayers Rock on the big screen, but one notable absentee was Michael Payntor, who would have sung the marquee track Man of Colours. But with accompaniments such as  as Hey Little Girl, We Can Get Together, No Promises, and many more the fans were willing to forgive the void.

With the two original members remaining for Simple Minds , it didn’t matter. For one – Jim Kerr remains as the lead vocalist since the band’s inception , with the energy, charisma and motion from the 1985 video remaining intact. Lead lead vocalist supported by guitarist Charlie Burchill who has been with Simple Minds since their discovery in 1977. Secondly, the band is injected by the high end fuel of diverse, energetic musicians with vocal powerhouse Sarah Brown, reaching notes of the likes of Adele and Lizzo, and drummer Cherisse Osei who would’ve given goose bumps to the likes of Travis Barker.  The benchmark was set from the first track (song).

Jim Kerr despite looking…well forty years more matured from their haydays, was rejuvenated on stage. Like a fencing student his feet weaved, and punching the air like a 80’s rockstar in a We Will Rock You musical. He swung the mic stand through a series of revolution. And lying on stage he did, like a true rocker. Jim knows the art of connecting with the crowd, where he regularly squads and sings for the crowd. The performances within the first few songs had set the benchmark for the rest of the night.

red hot summer tour 2024 icehouse simple minds & more

“For those who have been living under the rock and don’t know us, well we’re a new and upcoming band”.

Kerr did an extended version of  Belfast Child, the  sound of the pipes and Scotland resonated across the town. Silence cast over the grounds in the first half as drums and guitar kicked in in the second in a beautiful arrangement. Someone Somewhere, Alive and Kicking and All the Things She Said were performed with the same gusto as others

Simple Minds are more than Don’t You. As the night progressed, it became obvious that they are far from a One Hit Wonder.

SIMPLE MINDS & ICEHOUSE

RED HOT SUMMER TOUR is thrilled to announce its next series of dates for the 2024 season from one of Australia’s most sought-after summer festivals. These iconic outdoor shows will take place centre stage in Mornington, Yarra Valley, Bribie Island & Perth , and for series No. 2, this mega-line-up will be co-headlined by SIMPLE MINDS and ICEHOUSE .

It’s been over 40 years since Scottish superstars, SIMPLE MINDS , toured Australia for the first time in 1981 when they were invited by their good friends, ICEHOUSE . History repeats itself as they come together on stage all these decades later.

Their trademark sound has earned them massive hits – with songs such as Promised You A Miracle, Glittering Prize, Don’t You (Forget About Me), Alive and Kicking, Sanctify Yourself, Belfast Child and Let There Be Love dominating the airwaves globally. With a career spanning nearly 40 years, ICEHOUSE is one of Australia’s most iconic bands, transcending age groups with their hit songs, well known and loved by audiences across generations, playing to sell-out, capacity audiences in Australia, New Zealand and throughout the world. Formed by Iva Davies, the band’s frontman and musical creative force, ICEHOUSE went on to have an amazing 28 Platinum albums, eight Top 10 albums and over thirty Top 40 singles. ICEHOUSE’s unofficial Australian anthem, Great Southern Land, has been a part of almost every Australian’s summer soundtrack for the past 40 years and in 2014, it was inducted into the National Film and Sound Archive’s Sounds of Australia registry. It’s also been remixed a number of times, most notably Bill Laswell’s

After a brief hiatus to pursue their individual musical paths as writers and producers for outside artists in Sweden and the U.K, Tania and James reunited to release their socially conscious single Speak, in 2018.

Top 7 pineapple mule recipes.

Top 7 Pineapple Mule Recipes

May 10, 2020

In this post, we reveal the 7 best Pineapple Mule recipes anywhere on the internet. Read on to become an expert at making this awesome cocktail!

Introduction

Moscow Mules traditionally contain vodka, ginger beer, lime juice, and mint. In a twist on the original Mule, the Pineapple Mule is an ice-cold cocktail that keeps everything in the original and then adds pineapple–delivering a punch of extra flavour and refreshment.

Pineapples are on the list of the most popular tropical fruits, and for good reason. They're versatile to use, delicious, and also healthy. Pineapple can be eaten raw, made into jams, juices, and much more. Here, pineapple is used to give the classic Moscow Mule an invigorating taste. With a Pineapple Mule, the only thing left to do is put your feet up and chill.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the history of the Pineapple Mule, its essential ingredients, how to make the perfect Pineapple Mule, entertainment tips, and the variations of the drink.  Now, without further ado, let’s get started.

History of the Pineapple Mule

The classic Moscow Mule has enjoyed enduring popularity. Over the years, it has given rise to a number of variations, such as the Pineapple Mule that originates from the mid-Pacific. Mixologists love using pineapples because their syrupy sweetness adds a tropical flavor to drinks.

Essentials for Amazing Pineapple Mules

Warmer weather is finally here, and wouldn’t we all wish it stays a tad longer? The best part is, you can enjoy it while it lasts with this absolutely incredible and utterly delicious concoction. A Pineapple Mule is one sublime drink that you can easily make any time, and here are its essential ingredients:

Ginger Beer

Ginger beer is what gives a Pineapple Mule its spiciness and fizzy texture, making your drink quite flavorful. It’s also way better than ginger ale, which is carbonated water that's flavored with ginger. Ginger has fresh aromatics and bold flavors that make this concoction irresistible.

Vodka does more than just add a bold and smooth taste to a Pineapple Mule; when chilled before serving, it cools down your drink especially when combined with ice in a copper mug . This ensures an ice-cold, refreshing beverage every time. Whichever vodka you fancy, you really can’t go wrong.

Freshly squeezed lime juice has a mild flavor that effectively complements the other components of the cocktail. The overall result enhances the yummy flavors of the Mule.

Pineapple is slightly exotic and simply screams summer. The fruit perfectly balances acidity and sweetness, which makes it quite refreshing.

How to Make the Perfect Pineapple Mule

  • To ensure that you have the perfect Pineapple Mule, do not skimp on the ice. Fill your glass with ice to about ½ an inch of the top.
  • When it comes to choosing glasses, you have a number to select from. You can get copper mugs, which are synonymous with Mules. Alternatively, you can use a highball glass or any nice cocktail glass.
  • Always remember to smack your mint leaves between your palms. This helps to bruise the leaves, which releases their aromas and oils. The mild scent of mint is all part of the experience of this Mule.

Pineapple Mule Recipes

There’s a variety of ways you can create Pineapple Mule cocktails. These tropical drinks are a vibrant spin on the original, and they're perfect for backyard barbecues and hot summer days. We’ll take a look at six variations, but first, let’s start with the Classic Pineapple Mule cocktail.

Classic Pineapple Mule Cocktail

two Moscow Muled copper mugs filled with ice and pineapple and mint leaves wedged on the rim

Pineapples and Mules go together like peanut butter and jelly in this exciting variation of the classic Moscow Mule. Enliven your gatherings and parties with this unexpected treat.

Ingredients:

  • 3 oz pineapple juice
  • 1 ½ oz vodka
  • 6 oz ginger beer chilled
  • 2 fresh mint leaves

Instructions:

  • Fill your cocktail glass with ice. Then, smack one mint leaf between your palms to release the aroma before laying it on the ice.
  • Next, pour in the vodka, pineapple juice, and lastly ginger beer.
  • Using a stirrer or spoon, stir to combine.
  • Smack the other mint leaf and rub it gently over the rim of your glass before using it to garnish. Enjoy your cocktail.

Jalapeno Pineapple Mule

This delicious libation will become one of your new favorites. Its extra ingredient, jalapeno, adds a spicy kick to the cocktail.

  • 4 oz ginger beer
  • 2 oz fresh pineapple juice
  • 2 oz pineapple vodka
  • 1 slice of jalapeno
  • Crushed ice
  • Squeeze out the lime juice.
  • Top up your highball glass with crushed ice.
  • Add the rest of the ingredients in the glass.
  • Stir gently and serve.

Pineapple Coconut Mule

Entertaining a couple of guests? The drinks department will be sorted with this easy to make yet utterly delicious cocktail.

The natural flavors from the fresh cilantro make this drink truly refreshing. Not forgetting that cilantro comes packed with nutritional benefits. It’s a source of dietary fiber, zinc, iron, calcium, thiamin, vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin A, among others.

  • 3 cups ginger beer
  • 3 cups pineapple coconut juice
  • 2 cups vodka
  • 2 cups pineapple chunks
  • 1 cup fresh cilantro chopped
  • Add the large pieces of pineapple and fresh cilantro in a large pitcher.
  • Pour in the vodka and stir well to combine.
  • Add the pineapple-coconut juice and ginger, then stir.
  • Squeeze juice from half a lime and add into the pitcher, then stir again.
  • Place ice in copper mugs and pour the cocktail.
  • Add a few pineapple chunks and garnish with fresh cilantro. Enjoy.

Roasted Pineapple Mule Cocktail

two copper mugs filled with ice and pineapple and mint leaves wedged on the rim

Want to go all out? This cocktail is absolute perfection. The Roasted Pineapple Mule cocktail uses gold rum instead of vodka. It’s sweet, and has notes of molasses and a hint of sugar cane. You can roast the pineapple with some raw sugar and lime, and caramelize the sugar to add a smoky flavor to the drink.

For the roasted pineapple:

  • 1 ripe pineapple (small)
  • 1 fresh lime

For the cocktail:

  • 3oz ginger beer
  • 2 oz gold rum
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 2 tbsp diced roasted pineapple
  • 4 chopped mint leaves

To roast the pineapple:

  • Peel and slice the pineapple into ½ inch wedges. If not quite ripe, remove the core, but, if very ripe, leave the core.
  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  • Put the pineapples on a baking sheet and squeeze juice from half a lime on top of them.
  • Add the raw sugar. Roast the pineapples for 15 minutes, then flip them over, sprinkle more sugar, and roast for another 15 minutes.
  • Once done to your liking, remove the pineapples and let them cool.
  • Put 3 tablespoons of diced roasted pineapple in a copper mug.
  • Muddle the chopped mint and place it in the mug. Add ice and top up with lime juice and gold rum.
  • Stir well to combine, then top with ginger beer
  • Garnish with a roasted pineapple wedge, pineapple leaf, and mint sprig. Serve.

Orange Pineapple Mule

two copper mugs filled with ice orange slice wedged on the rim

  • 1/3 cup of orange juice
  • 1/3 cup of pineapple juice
  • 2 oz ginger beer
  • Pineapple wedges
  • Fill your highball glass with ice
  • Add the orange juice, pineapple juice, and vodka, then stir for a few seconds.
  • Top off using ginger beer
  • Garnish with fresh mint and the pineapple wedges. Serve.

Dunmore Pineapple Mule

You don't have to limit yourself to vodka. In this recipe, pineapple vodka is used instead of plain vodka, and whiskey is added. The result is a clean, crisp cocktail that absolutely hits the spot.

For homemade pineapple vodka, steep a couple of pineapple slices in vodka, then cover in a jar for seven days. Strain the vodka to make sure no pineapples remain. This will leave you with a pineapple-infused vodka.

  • 1 oz pineapple vodka
  • 1 oz whiskey
  • 1/2 oz almond-based cocktail syrup
  • 3 oz ginger beer
  • Put all the ingredients into a copper mug and mix well
  • Squeeze half a lime into the mug then stir to combine
  • Garnish with pineapple fronds. Drink up.

Piña Colada Mule

Take your Pineapple Mule to the next level by using ginger beer instead of coconut milk in the piña colada.

  • 8 oz pineapple juice
  • 4 oz coconut rum
  • Pineapple wedge
  • Maraschino cherry
  • Add the pineapple juice, rum, and squeezed lime juice in your copper mug then fill it with ice.
  • Stir to combine.
  • Top with ginger beer and garnish with a pineapple wedge, lime slice, and Maraschino cherry. Enjoy.

Entertainment Tip

Have an assortment of alcohol as well as ginger beer, limes, and pineapples at hand. That way, you'll be able to mix up a Pineapple Mule at a moment's notice. As long as you have these ingredients, you can always whip up exceptionally delicious drinks when your friends or family show up. That will make those random visits all the more fun and entertaining.

Cocktails are so much fun to make. And this is one area where you can really let your creativity run. These amazing drinks aren’t supposed to be complicated. They're actually meant to be easy to make, simple, and delicious. The above recipes are some of the easiest to make, and you only need a handful of ingredients.

Spice up your summer and holidays with the Pineapple Mule. It will make your festivities stand out and add an instant conversation piece to your backyard barbecue socializing. And, even after the summer festivities are over, you can still use the Pineapple Mule for your dinner parties and get-togethers. Whatever the occasion, these top Pineapple Mule recipes will no doubt provide that perfect finishing touch.
