Getting There and Around Malawi

The main gateway is Lilongwe International Airport (LLW) and Chileka International Airport (BLZ) in Blantyre. Several airlines operate flights to these airports from major African cities and international hubs. You can also enter Malawi by road from neighbouring countries such as Zambia, Mozambique, and Tanzania. 

Buses and minibuses are the most common and affordable way to travel between towns and cities in Malawi, and taxis are available in major cities such as Lilongwe, Blantyre, and Mzuzu. However, car rental is an option for more freedom and flexibility, but some roads may be challenging in certain areas due to their condition.  

Kabazas or boda-bodas, otherwise known as motorcycle taxis, are ubiquitous and handy for short trips within towns and rural areas. Although Malawi has a limited railway network, and trains are slower than buses, they make for a unique experience.  

In areas around Lake Malawi, boat transportation is an enjoyable way to explore lakeside villages and islands. For longer distances or reaching remote areas, domestic flights are available. 

Getting around the beautiful country of Malawi can be an adventure in itself, so enjoy the journey!

Our Early Days

Orient Travel was built on a dream; to provide high quality, broad, and tailor made services that connect our clients to the rest of the world. We first opened the doors of our office in Maputo in 2007, and raised a small dedicated team, which rapidly grew in expertise as a trusted market leader in the market. Our first aim was to have our agency accredited with IATA.  After following the regulations and protocols ,Orient Travel  got accredited by IATA in 2008.

From corporate travel  to luxury travelers, our clients spread the word about their incredible journeys, and as travel stories started unfolding one after another. Malawi és Nemzeti parkjai

A Malawi Köztársaság egy állam Délkelet-Afrikában, Tanzánia, Zambia és Mozambik között.  Malawi, mely országot csak „Afrika meleg szíve”-ként emlegetik, számtalan etnikai csoportnak ad otthont, ezek közül a Chewa a legnagyobb ilyen csoport. A malawiaiak hosszú idők óta vándorok, ennek eredményeképp a zenéjük szétterjedt az afrikai kontinensen. Napjainkban a zenéjük csak kissé ismert a nemzetközi köztudatban, ennek ellenére ebben az országban is vannak zenei hírességek. Az egyik fő oka a zenei olvadásnak, keveredésnek a II. Világháború volt, amikor is katonák hoztak és vittek magukkal zenét  A sportokat tekintve, az ország szokásait a történelme befolyásolta; mivel brit kolónia volt, a legnépszerűbb sportok Angliából származnak. 

Az ország a Kelet-afrikai-árok déli végződésénél – Afrika harmadik legnagyobb tava – a Nyasza- (vagy Malawi)-tó mentén terül el. A Malawi-tó keskeny parti sávja és a Shire folyó völgyén kívül az ország területe a Közép-afrikai-fennsíkon található. Átlagos tengerszint feletti magassága, 750 és 1200 méter közt van, mind északról, mind délről közel 3000 méteres hegyvonulatok övezik.

Éghajlat- időjárás:

Az országban a szubtrópusi éghajlat uralkodik és 3 évszakot különböztethetünk meg. Május és augusztus között hűvös, augusztus és november között forró, november és április között esős az idő. A hőmérséklet novembertől áprilisig 20 °C körüli. Május és október között 25 °C körüli.  A magasabb területeken 2000 mm a csapadék mennyisége évente, míg az alacsonyabb területeken 1000 mm, vagy még az alatti.

Árak, vásárlás:

Malawian kwacha = 100 cent, árfolyama a dél-afrikai randhoz (R) kötött.

A hitelkártyákat csak kevés helyen fogadják el Malawiban. Utazási csekket vagy készpénzt javasolt használni. Ajánlott a ki- és belépéskor bevallani a birtokolt valutát. Az ország elhagyásakor átkutatással is vizsgálják a kivitt valutamennyiséget. A kiutazók maximum 3000 malawi kwacha-t vihetnek magukkal.

Miért utazzunk Malawiba?

Malawi annak következtében, hogy több népcsoport él együtt és az ország hosszú ideig volt angol befolyás alatt, egy nyitott, befogadó, érdekes országgá vált, ahol a zene és a kultúra sokszínűsége megfűszerezi a hétköznapokat. Földrajzi és természeti adottságainak köszönhetően a kalandra vágyók itt megtalálják számításaikat!

Élővilág, természetvédelem:

Az állam területének jelentős részét foglalják el a vadrezervátumok és nemzeti parkok. Ezeken kívül ma már ritkán látni nagyvadat.

Nemzeti parkjai:

Nyika Nemzeti Park - az ország északi részén magas hegyvidék. A hőmérséklet ritkán emelkedik 21 °C fölé.

Kasungu Nemzeti Park - itt a legkönnyebb nagyvadakat látni.

Malawi-tó Nemzeti Park (Lake Malawi Marine Park) - A tó déli végében. Sokféle édesvízi trópusi hal.

Liwonde Nemzeti Park - A Shire-folyó felső szakaszán mocsarak, holtágak között sok elefánt él.

Lengwe Nemzeti Park - A mozambiki határnál fekszik. Cukornád ültetvények között, magas fűvű szavannán sok és sokféle antilop él.

Természeti világörökségei:

Az UNESCO a természeti világörökségek közé számítja a Malawi-tó Nemzeti Parkot.

Látnivalók:

• Nkhata öböl Nkhata Malawi legszebb tóparti városa, nyüzsgő piac és jó búvárkodó helyek vannak itt, és a közeli Kalwe erdő igazi paradicsom a madarászok számára.
• Liwonde Nemzeti Park: Liwonde az ország legszebb nemzeti parkja, nagyszerű állatállománnyal és gyönyörű tájjal. Vízilovak, krokodilok ezrei, és elefántok százai élnek itt, valamint néhány antilopfaj és néhány pár rinocérosz. Madárvilága is nagyon sokszínű. A park nagy része zárva van az esős évszak alatt.
• Mulanje hegy: Csodálatos tájaival, jól kiépített és könnyen megközelíthető ösvényeivel és kényelmes menedékházaival a Mulanje hegy kiváló túraterep. A hegység meredeken és hirtelen emelkedik ki a környező síkságból, sok csúcsa a felhők közé mered, köztük az ország legmagasabb pontjával, a 3000 m magas Sapitwa-val. Ha ide látogatunk, készüljünk fel a hirtelen hőmérséklet csökkenésekre, a záporokra és az egész évben jellemző rossz látási viszonyokra.
• Lilongwe: Szinte az egész város az 1960-70 években épült, és 1975-től az ország fővárosa. Központja az ún. Új Város, ahol az állami intézmények és adminisztrációs központok modern épületei állnak. Sokkal hangulatosabb az Óváros néhány kilométerrel délnyugatabbra, szívében a piaccal, ahol minden kapható: edények, autó- és biciklialkatrészek, üres műanyagdobozok, zöldség, gyümölcs, fogkrém, élő csirke és szárított hal. Érdemes itt körülnézni, még ha nem is akarunk vásárolni. A két városrész között terül el a természetvédelmi övezet 150 hektárnyi erdővel, néhány ketrecbe zárt vadállattal és rengeteg madárral. Érdemes megnézni a dohány aukciós házat, ahol napi 15.000 bála dohány cserél gazdát, falán a „Köszönjük, hogy dohányzik!” felirat olvasható.

Infrastruktúra:

Az országnak egy　nemzetközi repülőtere és 3810 km-es úthálózata van, főként földút. A vasútvonal hossza kb. 200 km. 2 tv állomás, 7 AM, 6 FM rádióállomás szór műsort, a telefonösszeköttetést az Intelstat 1 műhold biztosítja.

Elektromosság: 240 Volt (50 Herz)

Öltözködés:

A főbb idegenforgalmi területeken kívül a nők eltakart lábakkal és vállakkal közlekedjenek, hogy ne sértsék a helyiek érzékenységét.

A kábítószer birtoklást és csempészetet szigorúan büntetik.

A csiszolatlan drágakövek vásárlása törvényellenes. 

Közegészség, egészségügyi helyzet:

Az egészségügyi szolgáltatások színvonala általában alacsony, különösen vidéken. Egész évben maláriaveszéllyel lehet számolni, emellett gyakori a veszettség, és időnként felüti fejét a kolerajárvány is, különösen az esős évszakban (decembertől márciusig).

A bilharzia sok élővízben, tóban és folyóban jelen van. A Kasungu Nemzeti Parkban a cecelégy által terjesztett álomkór veszélyeztet. A gyomor- és bélrendszeri betegségek szintén gyakoriak. Csak palackozott vagy forralt vizet fogyasszon, és kerülje a jeges, jégkockával készített italokat.

Utazás előtt kérje szakértő tanácsát a szükséges oltásokat illetően is. Javasolt a malária elleni védekezés és a tetanusz-oltás.

Aircraft Carrying Malawi’s Vice President Is Missing

A search is underway after the aircraft carrying Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine other people vanished.

A search is underway for a missing aircraft carrying the vice president of the southeastern African country of Malawi and nine other people, the country’s government said on Monday.

The vice president, Saulos Chilima, was traveling on a Malawi Defense Force aircraft that took off at 9:17 a.m. Monday from the capital, Lilongwe. But it missed a scheduled landing at an airport in the north of the country, less than an hour’s flight away.

The aircraft was unable to land because of poor visibility caused by bad weather, Malawi’s president, Lazarus Chakwera, said in a televised address. The pilot was instructed to turn back, but within minutes, the aircraft disappeared from radar and the aviation authorities have been unable to establish contact with it.

“I know that this is a heartbreaking situation,” Mr. Chakwera said in a late briefing. “I know that we are all frightened and concerned.”

The president deployed a search and rescue operation that included both national and regional agencies, the government said in a statement. By the afternoon, rescuers had narrowed the potential crash site to a six-mile radius.

As darkness fell, military and police officers continued the search by vehicle and on foot, but struggled to comb through the thick forests in Malawi’s north, local news media reported. Despite these challenges, the search would continue until the plane was found, Mr. Chakwera said.

His government also reached out to neighboring countries in southern Africa for assistance. They were working with officials from the United States, Britain,Norway and Israel who could offer technological support, he added.

The vice president was on his way to attend the funeral of the country’s former attorney general, Ralph Kasambara.

Mr. Chilima, 51, was a telecommunications executive before entering Malawi’s political scene a decade ago. In late 2022, he became embroiled in a corruption scandal and was arrested by the country’s Anti-Corruption Bureau over accusations that he had received kickbacks from a businessman in exchange for government contracts.

He denied any wrongdoing, but the accusations tarnished a government that had sworn to clean up corruption in what is one of Africa’s poorest countries. Last month, the authorities in Malawi abandoned the case and withdrew all charges against Mr. Chilima.

He had been expected to launch a bid for the Malawian presidency in the 2025 election.

Once political rivals, Mr. Chakwera and Mr. Chilima formed a coalition in 2019 after losing an election marred by irregularities. The two candidates successfully challenged the result, and after a judicial panel ruled in their favor, the two men won a subsequent second vote in 2020 on the same ticket.
