The Corinth Canal cuts through the Isthmus of Corinth, turning the Peloponnese into an island as it separates the region from the Greek mainland. Inaugurated in 1893, the canal is a little over six kilometres long and enables merchant vessels and passenger to avoid a long 400-km detour around the peninsula. The two sides of the canal reach a height of approximately fifty metres. From the exterior decks, don’t miss this unique opportunity to watch the ship as it navigates along the narrow strip of water encased between tall, ochre cliffs. What an experience!

Corinth Canal, Greece

The Corinth Canal is in southern Greece and connects the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf, separating the Peloponnese peninsula from the Greek mainland and is notoriously narrow.

The product of many centuries of planning and building, the Corinth Canal is one of the oldest man-made canals in the world.

The canal was the brainchild of Roman emperor Nero – ruler of ancient Corinth – with the aim of saving ships from having to travel a massive 185 nautical miles.

Before the passage, ships passing through had to sail an extensive circular route to reach the Aegean Sea as well as the Mediterranean and Black seas.

Fun fact – Emperor Nero attempted to construct the canal himself in 67 AD and began to dig up the first pieces of soil with a pickaxe before a Roman workforce took over and dug trenches on both sides.

This progress was abandoned after the Emperor’s death and was only restarted in 1881- but you can still see the progress they made all those years ago today.

While the canal may be a man-made marvel, it only measures a minimum of 24 meters between each cliff-face, making the route inaccessible for many modern cruise ships and other large vessels.

Except for the small, but mighty, Braemar of course which allows you to experience the once-in-a-lifetime navigation between the solid rock.

Milazzo, Sicily

Milazzo possesses a colourful history and dates back as far as 648 BC when the Greeks founded a colony called Mylae on the island of Sicily in southern Italy .

Visit Castello di Milazzo, a gorgeous castle perched on the top of a hill overlooking the town, before you wander around its grounds which include a cathedral and Benedictine convent.

Milazzo acts as the perfect base to explore the Aeolian Islands, situated North of Sicily in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

These islands possess an intriguing variety of landscapes, from rocky coastlines to mountainous landscapes as well as an active volcano, Stromboli.

Athens, Greece

To get a true understanding of the fascinating history of Ancient Greece, Athens is the place to be.

The Acropolis of Athens is an ancient citadel on a rocky outcrop overlooking the city and home to one of the best-preserved arrays of ancient Greek monuments. Wander up the Acropolis via one of the wide-set pedestrian paths lined with cafes and restaurants to discover the crown of the hill, the Parthenon.

- READ MORE: Discover Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines different take on cruising -

This former temple, and the other impressive buildings on the Acropolis, were ordered in the fifth century by Greek statesman Pericles, who widely supported the arts and architecture.

Take your time to admire the structures which each have an intriguing story behind them such as the Erechtheion, a beautiful structure where Poseidon and Athena had a contest over who would be Patron of Athens.

Stromboli, Italy

As arguably one of the most famous Aeolian Islands due to its volcanic activity, Stromboli is best seen via cruise, especially with Fred. Olsen .

From the comfort of your ship, take in stunning landscapes formed and see if you can spot a black sand beach along this cone-shaped island.

Rhodes, Greece

As a UNESCO World Heritage site, the medieval city of Rhodes transports you back to medieval times. Navigate your way through the cobbled streets and admire architecture that has been well preserved.

This city also features a 4km long wall which divides the North and South of the town.

The north features an abundance of monuments such as the Inn of Auvergne on the street of the Knights.

This cobbled street is lined with inns of seven different knights, each with a crest that represented their nation.

The south side of the town has plenty of beautiful churches to admire – see if you can spot the churches constructed during the Byzantine empire.

Fred. Olsen's Braemar

Fred. Olsen is renowned for its smaller ships that can take guests off-the-beaten-track, to intriguing destinations. Braemar is the smallest in the fleet, bringing you as close as possible to the countless destinations you visit.

With large picture windows, spacious open decks and balcony suites; everywhere you turn you will be greeted with a picture-perfect view.

Want to know why Braemar can dock in such hard-to-reach places? Thanks to her flatter hull and shorter length, she’s able to navigate shallower rivers and journey straight to the heart of destinations that larger ships cannot.

With four restaurants, a heated saltwater swimming pool, a spa, gym and bubbling jacuzzi, Braemar is equipped to succumb to your every demand - even you seasoned cruisers will be impressed.

Braemar has 485 cabins onboard with capacity for 924 passengers and an impressive 401 crew members – making for an uncrowded cruising experience.

Greece’s Corinth Canal: The Complete Guide

Fascinating History and Engineering Marvel

corinth canal cruises 2022

Corinth Canal

Most travelers are familiar with many of the great man-made canals of the world like the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal. These two great canals are lengthy and link major oceans. But many other smaller canals, like the Corinth Canal of Greece are also impressive engineering marvels, and every canal has its own fascinating history.

Canals serve many different purposes. River canals are often built to control flooding or provide irrigation sources, while most ocean canals are built as shortcuts, to lessen the time at sea for cargo or passenger ships. The four-mile-long Corinth Canal is one of the world’s smallest canals designed to link two bodies of water and save sailing time for ships.

Location of the Corinth Canal

The Corinth Canal separates the mainland of Greece from the Peloponnese Peninsula. Specifically, the Canal links the Gulf of Corinth of the Ionian Sea with the Saronic Gulf of the Aegean Sea. A map of Greece shows not only its thousands of islands but also this peninsula that would be the country’s largest island if it weren’t connected to the mainland by this four-mile-wide strip of land. Technically, the Corinth Canal makes the Peloponnese an island, but since it's so narrow, most experts still refer to it as a peninsula.

Corinth Canal Facts and Stats

The Corinth Canal is named after the Greek city of Corinth, which is the nearest city to the isthmus. The Canal has steep limestone walls that soar about 300 feet from the water level to the top of the Canal but is only 70 feet wide at sea level. Ships must be narrower than 58 feet wide to transit the Canal. This small size was appropriate when the Canal was built in the late 19 th century, but it is way too small for today’s cargo and passenger ships. In today’s world of mega-ships, the Corinth Canal is primarily used by small cruise ships and tour boats. Like the Suez Canal , the Corinth Canal does not have locks; it is a flat-water canal.

Early History of the Corinth Canal

Although construction on the Corinth Canal was not completed until 1893, political leaders and sea captains dreamed about building a canal in this location for over 2,000 years. The first documented ruler to propose a canal was Periander in the 7th century B.C. He eventually abandoned the canal plan but did substitute a portage road, named the Diolkos or stone carriageway. This road had ramps on either end and boats were pulled from one side of the isthmus to the other. The remains of the Diolkos can still be seen today next to the Canal.

In the first century A.D., the philosopher Apollonius of Tyana predicted that anyone who planned to build a canal across the Corinthian isthmus would become ill. This prophecy didn’t deter three famous Roman emperors, but all died prematurely, making Apollonius look like a prophet. First, Julius Caesar planned to build a canal but was assassinated before it was even begun. Next, Emperor Caligula hired some Egyptian experts to assemble a plan for a canal. However, these experts incorrectly concluded that the Corinthian Gulf was a higher level than the Saronic Gulf. They told the emperor that if he built the canal, water would rush through and flood the island of Aegina. While Caligula was considering their results, he was assassinated. The third Roman emperor to consider a Corinthian Canal was Nero . He made it past the planning stage and attempted to construct the canal. Nero even broke ground with a pickaxe and removed the first shovel of dirt. His workforce of 6,000 prisoners of war completed 2,300 feet of the Canal—about 10 percent. However, like his predecessors, Nero died before the Canal was completed, so the project was abandoned. Today’s Corinth Canal follows this same route, so no remnants are left. The Roman workers, however, did leave a relief of Hercules to memorialize their efforts, which can still be seen by visitors.

In the second century A.D., the Greek philosopher and Roman senator Herodes Atticus tried unsuccessfully to get a canal project re-started. Hundreds of years passed, and in 1687, the Venetians considered a canal after conquering the Peloponnese but never began digging.

Nineteenth-Century Failures

Greece gained formal independence from the Ottoman empire in 1830 and the concept of building a canal across the isthmus near Corinth was revived. The Greek statesman Ioannis Kapodistrias hired a French engineer to assess the feasibility of the canal project. However, when the engineer estimated the cost to be 40 million gold francs, Greece had to abandon the proposal.

When the Suez Canal was opened in 1869, the Greek government reconsidered its own canal. The government of Prime Minister Thrasyvoulos Zaimis passed a law in 1870 authorizing the construction of a Corinth Canal and a French company was hired to oversee the project. It was not long before money became an issue. The French company building the Panama Canal went bankrupt and French banks became skittish about loaning money for major construction projects. Soon the French company working on the Corinth Canal went bankrupt too.

Corinth Canal Becomes a Reality

A decade passed, and in 1881 the Société Internationale du Canal Maritime de Corinthe was commissioned to build the canal and operate it for the next 99 years. King George I of Greece was present when construction was begun in April 1882. The company's initial capital was 30 million francs. After eight years of work, it ran out of money. A bond proposal to issue 60,000 bonds at 500 francs each failed when less than half the bonds were sold. The company went bankrupt, as did its Hungarian head, István Türr. Even a bank that had agreed to raise additional funds for the project failed.

In 1890, construction resumed when the canal project was transferred to a Greek company. The canal was completed in July 1893, eleven years after construction had begun.

Financial and Structural Issues of the Corinth Canal

Although the canal saves ships about 400 miles, problems continued after the Corinth Canal was completed. The canal is very narrow, which makes navigation difficult. By the time it was completed, the canal was too narrow for most ships, and its narrowness only allowed for a one-way convoy of traffic. In addition, the steep walls channel winds through the canal, exacerbating navigation even more. Another factor hindering navigation is the timing of the tides in the two gulfs, which cause strong currents in the canal. These factors caused many ship operators to avoid the canal, so traffic was way below what was expected. For example, annual traffic of about 4 million tons had been estimated for 1906; however, only half a million tons of traffic used the canal that year, making revenues less than expected. By the beginning of World War I, traffic had risen to 1.5 million tons, but the war caused a major decline.

The location of the canal in an active seismic zone also caused continuing problems. The steep limestone walls were already unstable and subject to landslides, and seismic activity and the wake of ships passing through the canal exacerbated this issue. The canal was closed frequently to either clear the landslides or build retaining walls. Of its first 57 years of usage, the Corinth Canal was closed for a total of four years.

The Corinth Canal was seriously damaged during World War II. During the Battle of Greece in 1941, British troops attempted to defend the bridge over the canal from German parachutists and glider troops. The British rigged the bridge for demolition, and when the Germans captured the bridge, the British promptly blew it up.

German forces began retreating from Greece in 1944, and they set off landslides to block the canal. In addition, they destroyed the bridges and dumped locomotives, bridge wreckage, and other infrastructure into the canal. This action hindered repair work, but the canal was reopened in 1948 after the U.S. Corps of Engineers cleared it.

Today, the Corinth Canal is used primarily by small cruise ships and tourist boats. About 11,000 ships per year travel through the waterway.

How to See the Corinth Canal

Travelers to Greece have three main options to see the Corinth Canal. First, cruise lines with small ships like Silversea Cruises, Crystal Cruises, and SeaDream Yacht Club transit the canal on eastern Mediterranean itineraries. Second, several private companies depart from Piraeus, the port of Athens, and offer a cruise through the canal. Finally, cruise ships with a day in Athens often offer a half-day shore excursion to the Corinth Canal for those who have visited Athens before. Guests board buses in Piraeus for the 75-minute drive to the Corinth Canal. Once there, a local tour boat takes them through the canal. These tours offer plenty of chances to see the canal from the top edge to the water level.

And next April, Braemarwill return to the Corinth Canal, which is just 24 metres wide at its narrowest point, to complete the feat once again. The cruise went on general sale on Friday, 19th February.

Clare Ward, Director of Product and Customer Service at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said: “We are proud of all of the cruises we handcraft for our guests, but this one is particularly special. “Our inaugural Corinth Canal sailing was just breathtaking. Guests took to the deck to watch in awe as Braemar travelled through the canal, with the sides so close they could almost reach out and touch them. “Captain Jozo Glavic, who navigated the canal, received a standing ovation from guests afterwards as he walked through the ship. It really was a very special cruise indeed. And now, even more guests will be able to experience it for themselves with the launch of this latest cruise. “But it’s not only the Corinth Canal transit that makes this cruise so exceptional. Guests will also have the opportunity to explore the Acropolis of Athens and its ancient Parthenon; meander the cobbled street of Rhodes’ Old Town; Visit the birthplace of the Olympic Games in Katakolon and take in the ruins of the Palace of Knossos in Crete. “It’s set to be a truly remarkable cruise from beginning to end and we can’t wait to share the experience all over again. We are expecting this cruise to be extremely popular, so anyone wishing to join us should book their cabin as soon as possible!”

The Corinth Canal is a waterway that separates the Greek mainland from the Peloponnese, turning it into an island. It is an important navigational route, which once allowed ships to enter the Aegean Sea. Whilst the Canal is steeped in over two millennia of history, the structure that we know now was completed and used for the first time on 28th October 1893.

The Braemar To Repeat Record-Breaking Corinth Canal Voyage in 2022

  • February 19, 2021

corinth canal cruises 2022

Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ small ship Braemar will be repeating the record-breaking voyage traversing the narrow Corinth Canal in April 2022. This was announced by Fred. Olsen in a press release.

The 929-guest Braemar broke the world record in October 2019 for being the largest ship ever to sail the 6.4kilometre-long Corinth Canal in Greece. At its narrowest point, the canal is just 24 meters wide.

“Our inaugural Corinth Canal sailing was just breathtaking,” said Clare Ward, director of product and customer service at Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines. “Guests took to the deck to watch in awe as Braemar traveled through the canal, with the sides so close they could almost reach out and touch them. Captain Jozo Glavic, who navigated the canal, received a standing ovation from guests afterward as he walked through the ship.”

“It really was a very special cruise indeed. And now, even more guests will be able to experience it for themselves with the launch of this latest cruise,” she added.

Aside from the Corinth Canal, the itinerary offers to “explore the Acropolis of Athens and its ancient Parthenon, meander the cobbled street of Rhodes’ Old Town, visit the birthplace of the Olympic Games in Katakolon and take in the ruins of the Palace of Knossos in Crete,” said Ward.

“It’s set to be a truly remarkable cruise from beginning to end and we can’t wait to share the experience all over again. We are expecting this cruise to be extremely popular, so anyone wishing to join us should book their cabin as soon as possible!” Ward stated.

The cruise will go on sale on Feb. 19.

Villa Vie Odyssey Review

Review of villa vie odyssey.

The 1993-built (as "Crown Dynasty") cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey was last named "MS Braemar" as part of Fred Olsen's cruise fleet . The sistership/same-designed Crown Jewel (1992-built) was later renamed to MS Gemini and time-chartered by Celestyal Cruises as "Celestyal Nefeli".

By design, the ship is similar to Superstar Gemini  ( Star Cruises /defunct).

Crown Dynasty's shipbuilding cost  was USD 75 million. The vessel was last refurbished by Fred Olsen in 2019 November. Braemar's last drydocking was in December 2023, following the acquisition by Villa Vie Residences.

The vessel (IMO number 9000699) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311541000) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

On November 29, 2022, Fred Olsen an nounced that is looking for a buyer for the 29-year-old MS Braemar. The last AIS report was on March 9, 2022 (at 18:30 UTC) showing the boat docked/laid up in Rosyth-Edinburgh . When the announcement was made, the shipowner had a total of 45x voyages scheduled for Braemar for 2023-2024 (April 28th through May 7th).

On November 29th (2023), Villa Vie Residences (a new brand) announced a pending ship purchase agreement. The announcement was made by Mikael Petterson (the company's CEO). The vessel's name was not revealed but a video showed MS Braemar. The residence ship's expected lifespan is 15 years (through 2039). Mikael Petterson also announced the possibility for Villa Vie Residences to acquire a second vessel, for US$100+ million.

The vessel changed ownership in March 2024, with a scheduled 8-day drydock followed by a 2-week drydock for refits and basic refurbishments.

On December 13th (2023), Villa Vie Residences confirmed the vessel's acquisition from Fred Olsen Cruise Lines. Renamed (from Braemar to Villa Vie Odyssey), the 924-passenger ship started revenue operations for the new owner in June 2024 (postponed from May) following a multimillion drydock refurbishment at Harland & Wolff (shipyard in Belfast ). The refit project transformed the 31-year-old vessel into a residential ship offering residences/villas instead of staterooms.

During the refit, Villa Vie Odyssey received a large-capacity business center (grouping conference spaces and private offices), Starlink internet, an interactive culinary center, a modern golf simulator, and a premium golfing program (with golf-themed land tours and classes led by a PGA-certified professional golfer.

In May 2024, Villa Vie Residences announced the Endless Horizons program. Based on a one-time payment (US$300K single occupancy and US$500K double occupancy), travelers can carelessly live on the ship with everything (outside stateroom, meals, activities and amenities) included in the fare.

In 2024-Q2, Villa Vie Residences plans to expand its fleet with a second ship.

Villa Vie Odyssey cruise ship (Fred Olsen Braemar)

Fred Olsen Group wholly owns the companies Fred Olsen Cruise Lines Ltd, Fred Olsen Travel Ltd (worldwide tours and vacations via independent operators), Fred Olsen Marine Services AS (shipowner and vessel management), First Olsen Ltd (tanker ships), Dolphin Drilling Holdings Ltd (offshore drilling rigs), Fred Olsen Express (Canary Islands-based fast ferries /catamarans ), Fred Olsen Freight Ltd (cargo shipping and air freight), Fred Olsen Windcarrier AS (transport and installation of offshore wind turbines), Fred Olsen Production AS (offshore petroleum production), Fred Olsen Renewables AS, SeaRoc Group Ltd (offshore and marine consultancy and contracting services), ZephIR Lidar UK (wind measurement devices), Ganger Rolf ASA (energy and shipping).

Also part of Fred Olsen Group, the company Bonheur ASA manages several fully-owned companies, among which are NHST Media Group AS (newspapers and online media) and the real estate companies Stavenes Byggeselskap, Koksa Eiendom, Fred Olsens gate 2. Part of Fred Olsen Group is also Timex Group BV - parent of several watchmaking companies, including the subsidiaries in the USA, India and the Philippines).

The 1000-passenger ship Braemar was originally built/launched as "Crown Dynasty" for Crown Cruise Lines (1984-founded/2001- defunct ) and joined Fred Olsen's fleet in 2001. One of the biggest changes that past cruisers are going to note is the Braemar Room on Deck 5, leading into the new Scottish-inspired Morning Light Pub (that was released on sister cruise liner Balmoral in early 2008). Before the renovation, this space was more of a walkway, but now the expanded Braemar Room has become more of a public room in its own right, with Aztec and nautical-themed design of the decor. This space is also home to a new library, a card room, and an Internet room.

MS Braemar cruise ship stretching

In 2009, MV Braemar (under Fred Olsen's ownership) was stretched by adding a prefabricated middle section. The refit resulted in increased gross tonnage and passenger capacity . During the ship's stretching (done in Germany, at Lloyd Werft's shipyard) were built new cabins, lounges and a restaurant, along with the 2 swimming pools (plus a paddling pool) on Marquee Deck 8 (Sun Deck).

The list of other stretched (elongated) cruise ships includes the fleet mates Balmoral, Boudicca, and Braemar, also the MSC Cruises ships Armonia , Lirica , Opera , the Phoenix Reisen 's Albatros and the Royal Caribbean 's Enchantment of The Seas .

Decks and Cabins

MS Braemar staterooms (a total of 485) include 19x Suites, 200x Balcony cabins, 130x Inside, in all 21 grades. Most Braemar staterooms are 130-175 ft2 Balcony rooms. The largest accommodation is the Superior Suite (300 ft2). Fred Olsen Braemar ship has a total of 40 solo cabins (single-occupancy rooms).

The boat has 8 decks , of which 7 are passenger-accessible and 6 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Most Braemar guests have dinner at the Thistle Restaurant for either 6:15 p.m. or 8:30 p.m. seating. The Thistle is an elegant, circular room with panoramic windows. Those who prefer a more intimate setting should choose the smaller Grampian Restaurant. This also has two seatings but it's mainly for travelers staying in the upper decks. Breakfast and lunch are open-seating, so guests can order waiter-served meals at either restaurant or try the self-serve Palms Cafe.

Follows the complete list of Braemar restaurants and food bars.

  • Thistle Restaurant (main dining room; hosts the formal Gala Dinner; with 2 fixed dinner seatings at 6:15 pm and 8:30 pm, open-seating buffet-style Breakfast 8:00 - 10:00 am and Lunch 12:00 - 2:30 pm)
  • Grampian Restaurant (ship's 2nd largest dining room, with the same menu as the Thistle; features floor-ceiling windows and intimate design)
  • Palms Cafe (alternative buffet-style restaurant, open-seating; offers Breakfast 7:00 - 9:30 am, Brunch 10:30 - 11:30 am, Lunch 12:30 - 2:30 pm, Afternoon Tea 3:30 - 4:30 pm, Dinner 6:30 - 9 pm and Supper Club 11:30 pm - 12:30 am; also features a 24-hour open tea-coffee station)
  • Lido Bar (outdoor bar for alfresco breakfast and lunch)
  • Marquee Bar (casual restaurant for lunch; al-fresco dining, with large, floor-ceiling panoramic windows; serves the pool area with alcoholic/non-alcoholic drinks).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

MS Braemar is clearly a vessel which attracts repeat cruisers, and much of this is due to the friendliness of the travelers and the camaraderie the small vessel engenders. A lot of the conversations on this cruise liner start with "Last time I was on Braemar..." or "We sailed on the cruise before the extra space was added...." But, instead of acting cliquey, the repeat cruisers are very welcoming, even offering cruising tips to Fred. Olsen newbies.

Villa Vie cruise itineraries

Villa Vie Residences' customers/"cruise residents" own the majority of the company's shares and actively participate in decision-making, including planning the itineraries (regions and destinations to be visited throughout the year).

The Villa Vie brand prioritizes extended port stays (ranging from 2 to 7 days) allowing the ship's residents plenty of time to connect and fully enjoy each destination.

The company offers two all-inclusive options for the residents. The first option is ownership (starting at US$100,000, with monthly maintenance fees from US$1750 per person), while the other option is a "pay-as-you-go" plan (residents select and combine portions/segments of the World Cruise itinerary with a 10% upfront deposit, starting at US$89 pp per day).

Villa Vie Odyssey's Maiden Voyage is currently scheduled for July 20, 2024 (out of Belfast) when the vessel starts revenue operations for its new owner. Due to technical and compliance issues during the drydock, Villa Vie Residences' inaugural cruise was postponed several times - May 15th and May 30th (both out of Southampton) and June 15th, 25th and July 2nd (from Belfast).

Fred Olsen Braemar itineraries

Fred Olsen's Braemar cruise itinerary program was based on ex-UK voyages visiting ports in the Mediterranean, Iberia (Spain and Portugal), the Canary Islands and the Norwegian Fjords. The itineraries were roundtrips from England (homeports Dover and Southampton ). The ship also offered seasonal Caribbean fly-cruises (departures out of Bridgetown Barbados ), with Transatlantic repositioning crossings between the Caribbean and Europe.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the ship was passed for 3+ years (March 2020 through May 2023), restarting on April 28th from Southampton.

MS Braemar was well-known worldwide for its annual (since 2019) voyages in the Aegean Sea (Eastern Med) passing through the Corinth Canal .

The vessel was launched in 1993 as "Crown Dynasty" for Crown Cruise Lines (1984-founded/2001-defunct). In the period 1993-1997, it was chartered to Cunard Line as "Cunard Crown Dynasty". Named "MS Braemar", it was part of Fred Olsen's fleet in the period 2001-2023, with registered shipowner Braemar Cruise Ltd.

The vessel (Union Naval Valencia yard/hull number 198) is powered by 4x Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 8R32E) with total power output 13,12 MW.

Drydock refurbishments review

In 2008, the vessel was drydock reconstructed at Blohm+Voss Shipyard ( Hamburg Germany ) and emerged as a brand new (larger) cruise liner with an extra 31-m long midsection. All 70 new cabins were added, along with a new lounge (Observatory), Grampian Restaurant and an expanded Sun Deck (plus one new swimming pool). The biggest change is the Braemar Room (Deck 5) leading into the new Morning Light Pub (Scottish-inspired, it had a debut on Braemar's sistership Balmoral ).

Fred Olsen Braemar went into drydock on November 12th, 2014, for an 8-day project for general refurb works, various engineering works, as well as extensive interior and exterior painting. A new Cafe Bar/patisserie was added on Lounge Deck 5 (Cafe Venus) serving luxury chocolates and high-quality coffees. The Library area was also reconfigured. The Card Room was moved to Atlantic Deck (3rd floor) and integrated with the Arts & Crafts Center.

MS Braemar's drydock 2019 (November 14-23, at Blohm+Voss Hamburg) was for general maintenance and engineering works, interior renovations (public areas) and cabin renovations.

Villa Vie Odyssey's first drydock refurbishment (2024) was initially planned for the period April 28th-May 29th. Eventually, its completion was delayed through June 21st. The project (conducted at Harland & Wolff in Belfast Ireland ) included pool deck renovations, the complete refurbishment of all staterooms (passenger and crew), public venues (painting, carpeting, walling), machinery overhauls, hull cleaning/repainting, safety inspections, classification works. All staterooms/Villas received new TVs and coffee machines, light fixture repairs, new carpets, deep cleanings.

In the Caribbean, Braemar was operated with fly-cruise UK deals pakaging the voyage with flights from England via the Canaries. Return flights were from Bridgetown Barbados to Santa Cruz de Tenerife . Fred Olsen also offered an all-inclusive cruise package upgrade (additional fixed price PP per day) and UK fly-cruises to the Canary Islands (year-round discounted airfare from Southampton ).

In 2018, the ship offered a 14-night "Choose Your Cruise" (Baltic Sea itinerary May 29 - June 11) leaving roundtrip from Southampton UK. On the voyage, passengers were allowed to vote on call ports (choosing between 2 ports) and decide between the Baltic capitals or alternative ports (in Holland, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Estonia). After counting, ballots were delivered to the Captain, who announced the winning port. The originally scheduled itinerary only included St Petersburg (Russia) and passing Kiel Canal (Germany) . The pairs with optional ports of call were Amsterdam-Rotterdam, Copenhagen-Hundested, Tallinn-Saaremaa, St Petersburg (overnight), Helsinki-Kotka, Wismar-Travemunde (Rostock). Fred Olsen also added GBP 200 pp in onboard credit and free drinks and tours on bookings made by March 1, 2018. Prices started from GBP 1800 pp.
