UAE/Dubai tourist visa: Requirements and application procedure

Updated: September 6, 2023

UAE or Dubai Tourist Visa Image

Over 70 nationalities do not require a UAE or Dubai tourist visa to enter the UAE or Dubai. Rest must obtain a prearranged UAE tourist visa through a UAE-based sponsor.

A UAE tourist visa can only be applied for through a sponsor. Any UAE-based airline, hotel, company, Emirate national or UAE resident can sponsor your UAE tourist visa.

Thankfully, all UAE or Dubai tourist visas are e-visas. You can apply online and receive the e-visa in the email.

Indian nationals with a valid US visa or a residence permit from the US, UK or EU can get a Visa on Arrival at all international airports.

Table of Contents

The passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival

  • New Zealand

NOTE UAE immigration refers to VISA-EXEMPT as VISA ON ARRIVAL. But you will not fill out any forms, pay any fee or receive any visa sticker or print, so in my opinion, it’s VISA EXEMPTION.

VISA ON ARRIVAL Eligible Nationalities

14-day entry.

* Must hold a valid visa from the US or a residence permit from the US, UK or any EU country.

VISA REQUIRED Nationalities

30-day to 90-day entry depending on the visa.

UAE VISA EXEMPTION

UAE immigration refers to VISA-EXEMPTION as VISA ON ARRIVAL. But you will not fill out any forms, pay any fee or receive any visa sticker or print. When you arrive at the airport, you will head straight to the immigration and present your passport. You will be stamped and given entry. Therefore, in my opinion, it’s a VISA EXEMPTION and hence we will refer to it as a VISA EXEMPTION.

Entry permission

30 to 180 days depending on the nationality.

Documents to carry

All you need is your passport.

UAE or DUBAI VISA ON ARRIVAL

UAE or Dubai Visa on Arrival - Fee Receipt

UAE Visa on Arrival is available for Indian passport holders with a valid visa from the US or a residence permit from the US, UK or any EU country.

Who is eligible for UAE Visa on Arrival

Only INDIAN passport holders with a valid US visa , US green card or residence permit from the UK or any EU country are eligible to obtain UAE Visa on Arrival.

Validity of UAE Visa on Arrival

UAE Visa on Arrival is valid for 14 days. It’s possible to extend it once for another 14 days.

How long can you stay in UAE with Visa on Arrival?

You can stay up to 14 days in the UAE with your Visa on Arrival. You can extend your visa for another 14 days at any AMER center in UAE. In that case, you can stay a total of 28 days in the UAE.

Documents required

You need the following documentation to obtain a UAE Visa on Arrival.

  • Original passport
  • Your boarding pass
  • A credit/debit card to pay the fee (you can also pay in cash in AED or USD in Dubai or Sharjah airports)
  • Completed application form (only needed in Sharjah airport and they will provide you with one)

Visa on Arrival fee varies from 105-140 AED depending on the airport.

Processing time

Since it’s only Indian passport holders with a US visa, US green card or a residence permit from the UK or EU country, there will not be many in the line. So the Visa on Arrival process wouldn’t take more than a few minutes.

Obtaining Visa on Arrival at the airports in UAE

UAE Visa on Arrival for Indian passport holders is outsourced to certain travel agencies.

If arriving at Sharjah airport, you must stop by the Sharjah Airport Travel Agency (SATA) desk to fill out the form, get your documents verified and pay the visa fee.

If arriving at Dubai airport, you must stop by the Marhaba Services desk to get your documents verified and pay the visa fee.

If arriving at Abu Dhabi airport, you must head straight to the immigration check. The immigration officer will verify your passport, and visa/residence permit and accept the visa fee payment.

UAE or DUBAI TOURIST VISA

A UAE or Dubai tourist visa can only be applied through a UAE-based sponsor or an authorized agent. A sponsor can be a UAE-based airline, UAE-based hotel, UAE national or resident, UAE-based company or government entity or a UAE-based tour operator.

The sponsor is responsible for your actions in the UAE. If you overstay your visa, the sponsor is held responsible and will face consequences by the government of UAE.

Why do you need a sponsor for a UAE tourist visa?

A UAE-based sponsor is mandatory for all UAE tourist visas. Your sponsor is responsible for all your actions while you are in the UAE. They must make sure you leave the country in time without overstaying your visa. If you don’t know anyone personally in the UAE, you can use either your airline, hotel or tour agent for your visa processing.

It’s silly to still use sponsors in this day and age. The sponsor model is an old model and many countries are moving away from such ways of visa processing. But countries such as UAE, Singapore, etc. are still stuck with this visa model.

Which sponsor or agent should you use for your UAE tourist visa?

If you don’t have a sponsor, you can use a UAE-authorized agent to apply for your UAE tourist visa. There are a bazillion agents these days processing UAE tourist visas, including VFS Global.

Thanks to the internet, you can apply for a UAE tourist visa through an agent completely online in the comfort of your home. All you need is a scanned copy of your Passport ID page and a digital passport-size photo.

The fee, documentation and processing time vary by agent. Local agents in your country are usually cheaper but you must do your due diligence on their authenticity, hidden charges and processing time before applying through them.

Which agent do I recommend for a UAE visit visa?

My preferred agent for UAE or Dubai tourist visas is Etihad Airways. I usually prefer a reputed international agent, so I went with Etihad Airways. They only act as an agent for your visa and you don’t have to fly with Etihad Airways. You can fly with any budget airline and travel to/from any international airport in the UAE.

Other agents that you can use and their fee for a UAE 30-day single-entry tourist visa is below.

My preferred agent

  • Etihad Airways | 361 AED | Few hours | No security deposit

UAE based agents

  • Arabiers | 359 AED | 24-48 hours
  • Sharjah Airport Travel Agency (SATA) | 335 AED

India based agents

  • MakeMyTrip | Approx. 311 AED | 7-9 days

IMPORTANT Some agents will charge a security deposit which will be refunded to you on your exit from the UAE. So do your due diligence before applying for your UAE tourist visa with any of the above agents.

I have a detailed article on how to apply for a UAE or Dubai tourist visa online with Etihad Airways. Follow the article for step-by-step instructions on how to apply for your UAE tourist visa.

What types of UAE tourist visas are available?

Below are some of the different types of tourist visas available.

  • 30-day single-entry tourist visa
  • 90-day single-entry tourist visa
  • 30-day multiple-entry tourist visa
  • 90-day multiple-entry tourist visa
  • Long-term tourist visa

Most tourists usually need a 30-day single-entry tourist visa. It’s also the cheapest of all types of tourist visas. The procedure to apply for any of the above types of visas is pretty much the same, except for the fee.

Validity of UAE visit visa

All UAE tourist visas are valid for 60 days within which you must enter the UAE. Then depending on your visa, you will be given that many days of permission to stay in the UAE.

For example, if you hold a 30-day single-entry tourist visa, your visa will be valid for 60 days. You can enter the UAE anytime within that 60 days. When you enter, immigration will give you 30 days to stay in the UAE.

When to apply for your Dubai visit visa

You can apply for your UAE visit visa as early as possible. But apply at least 5 working days prior to your trip. Processing can take time and some agents require up to 10 working days to process.

How long can you stay in the UAE with a tourist visa

You can stay up to 30 days or 90 days depending on your visa. You can also extend the visas within the UAE for an additional 30 days or 90 days.

Documents required for UAE tourist visa

Usually, you will need the following documents.

  • A scan of your passport ID page
  • A recent colored digital photo
  • A copy of your flight ticket

ENTRY AND EXIT PROCEDURE AT THE AIRPORT

UAE Dubai Entry Stamp in Passport

Entering the UAE by air

After you arrive at the airport, walk towards passport control and baggage claim.

If you hold an Indian passport and are planning to obtain a UAE Visa on Arrival, head to the following visa agent desk for your Visa on Arrival process. Once your Visa on Arrival is processed head to the immigration.

  • Sharjah Airport: SATA
  • Dubai Airport: Marhaba Services
  • Abu Dhabi: There are agents involved for Abu Dhabi airport, so head straight to the immigration

At the immigration, present your passport, boarding pass and Visa on Arrival fee receipt (if you hold an India passport and obtained Visa on Arrival) or your Dubai visit visa print.

The officers may ask you a few questions about your trip such as whether it’s your first time in UAE, how long you will stay, etc. You may be asked to show your return/onward ticket and your hotel booking.

If you are traveling on a one-way ticket, you can use OnwardTicket to get proof of an onward ticket.

Get a proof of onward ticket for your trip from OnwardTicket

Leaving UAE by air

UAE airports have automated passport controls when leaving the country. You will simply arrive at one of the automated passport control kiosks, scan your passport and follow the voice instructions. When the voice says move forward and face the camera, you will do so. Then the exit gate will open and you will exit. No exit stamp is given.

If you are having any issues with automated passport controls, you will be sent to a manned passport control counter.

Dubai Global Village at Night

A UAE or Dubai tourist visa is not required for 0ver 70 nationalities. Other nationalities must obtain a prearranged UAE tourist visa through a UAE-based sponsor or authorized agent.

All UAE or Dubai tourist visas are e-visas. You can apply online with your preferred agent and receive the e-visa in the email.

Indian nationals with a valid US visa or a residence permit from the US, UK or EU can get a Visa on Arrival at all international airports.

UAE residents’ Emirates IDs now officially serve as their residency documents, having replaced the visa stickers stamped on to passports.

Since April 11, residency applications - new or renewal - have been unified, and residents do not need to go through separate processes for visa and Emirates ID.

Previously, the pink-coloured visa sticker on passports served as the primary residency document. Photocopies had to be submitted for different services requiring residence proof.

While the delivery of Emirates IDs may take some time, digital versions of the Emirates IDs and visa stickers are accessible instantly on designated apps.

Here is a step-by-step guide on getting a residency visa now that the visa stamping process has been scrapped.

Who can become residents in the UAE?

Foreigners can live as residents in the UAE if they are:

> Employed by a company in the country. In this case, the company will apply and sponsor the residence visa

> Employed by the government sector. In this case, the government entity will apply and sponsor the visa

> Business investors in the UAE can start the process by themselves and apply for their visa under the sponsorship of their company’s registered name

> Buying a property in the UAE. In this case, the property developer will sponsor the property owner’s residence visa

> Studying at a university in the UAE. In this case, the university will apply and sponsor the visa under the educational institution’s name

> Dependents who are sponsored by:

  • someone who is employed in the UAE
  • an investor/business owner in the UAE
  • a property owner in the UAE.

Dependents include children, parents, maids and close relatives.

How to apply for a residency visa in Dubai

The application process and fees for residency permits, including golden visas, remain the same.

“For employees in the private sector, the organisation completely takes care of the employee working in the application process. The only difference is that companies are no longer required to take the passports from the employees to stamp the visa in,” explained Iqbal Marconi, CEO of ECH, a leading business service provider in the UAE.

Marconi said government authorities had not modified the rate cards for all visa categories. The cost of the new entry permit/sponsor registration is priced at Dh268.90.

Procuring a work visa involves the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre) and the General Directorate of Residency and Foreign Affairs (GDRFA) of the Emirate where the person is employed.

Step-by-step visa application process

> The process starts with procuring a work permit for an expatriate from Mohre

> The work permit allows the holder to enter the UAE for employment, and it is valid for two months from the date of issue

> After the employee enters the UAE based on the work permit, the sponsoring company arranges to complete the formalities of medical testing, obtaining the Emirates ID, and labour card

> The work residency permit on the employee’s passport denotes that he is sponsored by the company he is employed in

> After this process, the employee can support their family members

> The Emirates ID - which recently received a significant upgrade - constants all relevant residency-related information on the visa sticker. The new generation of Emirates ID contains personal and professional data, the issuing entity and other readable data via an e-link system

  • No UAE visa stamping on passports: What will banks use as residency proof?
  • No UAE visa stamping on passports: How to prove your residency with new process
  • No UAE visa stamping on passports: New process to reduce time, efforts to get Emirates ID

> Once all processes are complete, the Emirates ID is delivered to the applicant

> Since the delivery might take time, applicants can view a digital version of the Emirates ID on the ICP’s smartphone application - ICPUAE - which is available for download on Apple as well as Android devices

> The pink-coloured residency sticker continues to be available virtually via the ICP app

> Residents can get their residency details in a printed format with the authority’s stamp via the app or the website

Additional Tips:

  • Double-check all deadlines and ensure your documents meet validity requirements.
  • Clarify any fees upfront, including government visa fees, service charges, and potential surcharges for using specific payment methods.
  • Ask about any additional support services offered by the vendor, such as assistance with booking hotels or airport transfers.

To initiate the Dubai visa application process, Indian citizens need to provide the following essential documents:

Tourist visas are generally the most extendable, while others like work visas might have specific renewal procedures. You cannot extend an expired visa. It's crucial to apply before your current visa reaches its expiry date. There might be grace periods and fines associated with overstaying.

Application Process:

  • Gather Documents: You'll need your passport (original and copy), visa application form, coloured passport-sized photographs, and payment for the extension fee (around AED 1000).
  • Online: Many government websites like GDRFAD ( https://gdrfad.gov.ae/en ) or specific emirates' immigration departments ( https://icp.gov.ae/en/ ) offer online visa extension options.
  • Agents: Authorised visa agents can assist with the application process for a fee.
  • Submit Application and Pay Fees: Once you've chosen the method, submit your application and pay the relevant fees. The fee for UAE visa extension is AED 1000.
  • Collect Your Extended Visa: Upon approval (usually within 3-5 working days), you can download your e-visa or collect your updated passport with the extension stamp depending on the application method.

Here are some common reasons why a UAE visa application may be rejected:

  • Incomplete or Inaccurate Application: Ensure thorough completion of the application form, attaching all required documentation before submission. Any inaccuracies or omissions may lead to visa refusal.
  • Past Visa Violations: Previous breaches of UAE visa regulations, such as illegal employment or visa overstay, can result in visa denial.
  • Security Concerns: Visa applications may be rejected if immigration authorities have suspicions or concerns regarding an applicant's security background.

If your previous UAE E-visa application was denied, you have the option to reapply. However, it's crucial to understand the reasons for the initial rejection and address them before submitting a new application. Review any rejection notices or communications from UAE immigration authorities for specific feedback.

To avoid another rejection, ensure that your new application is error-free and meets all requirements.

Before reapplying for a UAE E-visa, gather the necessary documents:

  • Ensure your passport is valid for at least 6 months from your planned entry date into the UAE and has two blank pages for visa stamping.
  • Provide a scanned copy of your passport's personal information page.
  • Have a credit/debit card or PayPal account ready to pay the Dubai tourist visa fees.
  • Use a current email address to receive your UAE E-visa.

When reapplying:

  • Address any issues: Correct any mistakes or deficiencies from your previous application. Make sure all required documents mentioned above are accurate and complete.
  • Provide additional information: If possible, include any extra details or documents that could strengthen your application.
  • Seek assistance if needed: If you're unsure about why your application was rejected or need guidance, consider reaching out to UAE Immigration Services for clarification or assistance before reapplying.

If your UAE e-visa application is rejected there isn't a formal process for appealing the decision. Typically, if your UAE e-visa is denied, you will receive notification outlining the reasons for the rejection. If you believe the denial occurred due to misinformation or an assessment error, you may consider reaching out to the UAE embassy or consulate for clarification and resolution.

Upon arrival at the UAE airport, it's important to follow these steps for a smooth and hassle-free experience:

  • Ensure Travel Documents are Ready: Have your passport and a valid UAE visit visa readily available for quick verification by immigration authorities. It's advisable to carry physical printouts of these documents or ensure they are easily accessible on your mobile device.
  • Understand UAE (Dubai) Regulations: Proceed to the customs area if you have items to declare or if your baggage requires inspection. Familiarise yourself with the UAE (Dubai) Customs Regulations , which offer information on various services, duty-free shopping options, and traveller facilities.
  • Follow Unaccompanied Minor Guidelines: If you are travelling as an unaccompanied minor, remain with your designated flight attendant for safety. Upon arrival, identify your assigned adult at the destination airport to ensure a secure transition.

In summary, this guide simplifies the process of obtaining a visa for Dubai. Simply follow the steps that align with your travel plans, and you'll soon be exploring the wonders of Dubai's captivating cityscape and rich culture.

Visa Stamping in Dubai for 2024

Jan 10, 2024 | Human Resources

The landscape of visa stamping in Dubai is undergoing a significant transformation now it is 2024. With the introduction of a new digital system, the well-established practice of stamping passports will give way to an advanced and efficient digital alternative. For those planning to make a home or establish a career in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), familiarising oneself with the updated visa stamping protocols is essential.

As Dubai embraces modernity and pushes towards streamlining residency procedures, this guide will take you through what you need to know about the latest visa stamping rules, the documentation you’ll require, and the steps for securing your legal residency status in Dubai. Stay informed of these pivotal changes and confidently ease your way into the UAE’s evolving residency framework.

Table of Contents

Dubai’s Visa Stamping Evolution

Historically, visa stamping in Dubai involved:

  • Physically marking your passport.
  • Affirming your legal residency status in the UAE.
  • Personal and professional data only.

This procedural step was critical in legitimising your right to live, work, and commute in and out of the country.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) has now declared that the Emirates ID will supplant the conventional visa stamp found in residents’ passports. This measure simplifies the visa system and bolsters its efficiency manifold.

Your Emirates ID, compulsory for all UAE residents, will carry an array of vital details previously found on the primary residency document and sticker – from personal identification to professional information and the issuing authority’s data. These details will be accessible and securely stored within the chip of your Emirates ID card .

This pivotal change accelerates the process for residents as the need for passport submission, a procedure prone to causing delays, is now obsolete. With your Emirates ID, you have all the credentials to verify your residency status straightforwardly.

To adopt this new system, apply for both the Emirates ID and residency visa in one streamlined application . You can proceed with this through the official ICP website or the UAEICP mobile app, availing the ‘residence permit and Emirates ID issuance’ service.

Accuracy is key in your application to prevent processing obstacles. Your Emirates ID will be delivered via a registered courier service upon application and payment submission.

The ICP has communicated these changes effectively across the aviation sector to prevent any hindrances to travel. Airlines can easily validate a person’s UAE residency using their Emirates ID and passport number with a reader. Similarly, resident status for those abroad is checkable through readers, ensuring recognition even when outside of the UAE.

The pink-coloured residency sticker, while no longer a physical mark on passports, continues its existence in a virtual form on the ICP app. For those requiring a hard copy, this can be printed with an official stamp from the same platform or website. Embracing the digital revolution, Dubai’s shift to a digital residency verification system reflects its dedication to integrating technology into governmental processes – streamlining, reducing paperwork, and enriching the experience for residents and visitors alike.

Essential Documents for Visa Stamping in Dubai

When undertaking the important task of visa stamping in Dubai, being well-prepared with all the necessary documents is crucial. This process begins once you have successfully obtained your Entry Permit e-visa and completed the mandatory medical examination as per Dubai Health Authority (DHA) guidelines.

The key documents required for visa stamping include:

  • Original Passport: It must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended period of stay in the UAE.
  • Entry Permit e-Visa: This is the initial approval you receive for entry into Dubai.
  • Medical Examination Results: Issued by a DHA-approved health centre, confirming your fitness for residency.
  • Health Insurance Proof: To ensure you are covered for any medical needs during your stay.
  • Emirates ID Application Receipt: This is proof that you have applied for your Emirates ID, a mandatory identification card for all UAE residents.
  • Passport-Size Photographs: These need to be in a specific format per UAE regulations.
  • Employment Contract or Offer Letter (if applicable): This should be from your UAE-based employer.
  • Proof of Accommodation: This can be a tenancy agreement or a hotel booking confirmation.
  • Educational Certificates (if applicable): These are especially relevant for certain job categories and should be duly attested.
  • Sponsor’s Passport Copy and Visa Page (if applicable): For those being sponsored, these documents of the sponsor are essential.

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs – Dubai (GDRFA-D) oversees the visa stamping process. It’s important to stay informed about the processing time, new process and any additional specific requirements based on your visa type. The standard duration for a residency visa is typically two years, subject to your employment agreement and other conditions.

Failing to comply with the required documentation or missing the stipulated deadlines, especially during visa renewal or at the end of the 30-day grace period post-visa expiration, can lead to penalties. Keeping a checklist of these essential documents and understanding their significance will pave the way for a smoother visa stamping experience in Dubai.

Execution Period for Visa Stamping

Several variables, including the type of visa and the accuracy of submitted documents, influence the time it takes to finalise the visa stamping procedure. Assemble all the necessary paperwork, such as your valid passport, visa application, sponsor’s Emirates ID, medical results, health insurance card , and sponsor’s bank account IBAN. The precision and validity of each document are fundamental to avoid delays.

Residents have a 30-day window following the expiry of their employment visa to renew or complete the stamping process penalty-free. Proactive renewal is advised to dodge any complications. Missing this window can lead to fines and complications with your Emirates ID issuance.

The ICP has implemented initiatives to expedite the stamping process by incorporating personal and professional details into the Emirates ID, consequently eliminating the need for a separate passport sticker. Airlines can also verify residency using the Emirates ID and passport number, which may accelerate the procedure.

Consult official government platforms or visa processing centres for the most up-to-date guidance and regulations.

Post-Visa Stamping Procedures and Considerations

The validity of your visa and its renewal should be monitored diligently. Initiating the re-stamping process early on is wise to avoid undue challenges. Remember, renewal is contingent on fulfilling specific criteria, and understanding your rights and responsibilities following visa stamping is equally important.

Adherence to government-directed renewal protocols is imperative to remain compliant . Should your visa expire, legal implications such as fines will ensue. Websites and support services for visa facilitation can offer invaluable advice, relevant residency-related information, and assistance in adhering to these regulations.

Residency Eligibility in the UAE

The UAE’s robust visa programme caters to a diverse populace, including workers, families, and investors . Overseas nationals seeking their residency permits must undergo medical tests and security checks once they turn 18 to uphold community safety standards.

Acquiring an Emirates ID is the next consequential step in affirming your residency. It’s a legal necessity that confers identification and enables access to numerous services across the UAE.

The government accommodates residents amid pivotal life changes, extending the residence visa by one year for women who divorce or are widowed, providing a much-needed stability buffer during vulnerable transitions.

It’s worth noting that residency is subject to conditions . Spending over six consecutive months outside of the UAE leads to automatic visa invalidation. However, exceptions for prolonged absences can be made upon application for a re-entry permit for reasons like study, work, or medical treatment.

A resident visa grants access to state health services, insurance, and visa-free travel to certain countries, underscoring the UAE’s commitment to its international community.

Visa renewal responsibility rests with the sponsor, and visa cancellation is paramount upon departure from the UAE. Dependents’ visas must also be cancelled before the primary sponsor’s visa cancellation.

The facility to cancel a visa is accessible through typing centres or online, offering flexibility in the process. Moreover, if you’re seeking tax residency status, the Federal Tax Authority’s online portal allows for Tax Residency Certificate applications.

UAE’s visa landscape now includes innovative categories like Remote Work , Digital Nomad, and Green Visas , showcasing its adaptability to a rapidly changing global workforce. These visas offer an online application process that reflects the country’s commitment to a dynamic, inclusive economy.

The Digital Future of UAE Residency

As Dubai advances with its digital innovations regarding visa processes and immigration status, residents are poised to benefit from the convenience and efficiency of the Emirates ID system. The time-honoured passport stamping practice is replaced by an agile, electronic alternative, ensuring the continued security of the residency framework.

Whether a prospective or current resident, awareness and preparation for these digital advancements will smooth your path in Dubai’s technologically advanced residency landscape. Embracing Dubai’s forward-thinking vision positions you at the forefront of a future where managing your residency details is as simple as a tap on your pocket-held device.
