Cruising the River Nile: Pros, Cons, and Recommendations

nile symphony cruise reviews

Angus McComiskey/Getty Images

Traditionally, a Nile cruise was considered the centerpiece of an Egyptian vacation, evoking romantic images of idyllic days spent drifting in luxury between the country's ancient sights . In Victorian times, a Nile cruise was the only way to see some of Egypt 's most outstanding ancient temples. Modern visitors have more options available to them; and while Nile cruises are still popular, some find themselves put off by the idea of being confined on a boat for the majority of their vacation. The river is much busier now than it was in the past, and with more than 200 cruise boats plying their trade, there are lines to get through the locks and to dock at each disembarkation point.

Let's weigh the pros and cons of a Nile cruise so that you can decide whether or not it's a good fit for your visit to Egypt.

What to Expect

Most Nile cruises start in Luxor and visit the popular sites of Esna, Edfu, and Kom Ombo before disembarking in Aswan. Other itineraries fly directly to Aswan and work their way north down the Nile to the same sights. Most cruises will last at least four nights. There are many different vessels to choose from, ranging from traditional paddle steamers (best suited to those that favor history and authenticity) to luxurious modern cruise ships (geared towards those for whom creature comforts are a priority). Your budget and personal preferences will determine which cruise you choose, although opting for a cabin with air-conditioning is advised during the scorching summer months .

Most cruise companies employ the services of an Egyptologist, who will guide your group around the ancient sights you visit along the way. Days start early to avoid the intense heat of the afternoon; and as such, all cruises tend to operate on a similar schedule (which can lead to overcrowding at the docking sites and at the temples themselves). Modern vessels typically have a swimming pool so that you can cool off after your morning explorations; while some provide nightly entertainment in the form of belly dancing shows or themed dress-up evenings. Food on board is usually excellent, ranging from generous buffets to set dinner menus. Make sure to find out what's included before choosing your operator.

Despite the changes brought about by the progression of time, a Nile river cruise is still one of the most popular ways to see Egypt's ancient sights. Part of that is tradition, and part of it is practicality; after all, many of the most famous sites are located directly on the river, making a cruise the easiest way to travel between them. At night, many of the temples and monuments are illuminated, and the sight of them from the water is simply breathtaking. During the day, the rural scenes you'll see whilst traveling from place to place have remained largely unchanged for thousands of years.

Despite the early morning starts (and depending on which vessel you choose), cruises can also be wonderfully relaxing. While sailing, you'll be able to get a sense of the country without having to deal firsthand with the chaotic roads, busy city streets, and persistent hawkers for which Egypt is famous. Although the sites you'll visit along the way are inevitably crowded, arriving in a large group can make some travelers feel more comfortable. You'll also benefit from the knowledge of an expert guide, both in terms of navigating the touts and in terms of understanding the fascinating history of the temples themselves.

For many visitors, the main drawback of a Nile cruise is not the influx of vessels, nor the crowding at the sites (the latter is unavoidable whether you visit them as part of a cruise or not). The main disadvantage is the inflexibility of a cruise; the fact that you have to operate on a set schedule that dictates when you visit a temple, how long you get to spend there, and what you see whilst you're there. If you want to spend more than a few hours exploring the untold wonders of the temple complexes at Luxor, for example, you may wish to travel there independently or with a land-based guide.

These days, overland tours are equally easy to arrange and allow for more flexibility. You can even hire a car or take public transport if you don't want to be part of an organized tour at all. Many cruise itineraries focus solely on the most popular temples, leaving out worthwhile smaller sights like Abydos and Dendera. Alternatively if your time in Egypt is limited, you may prefer to focus on one or two sights rather than spending much of your vacation in transit on the river. The sheer amount of time spent on board can also be a drawback if you're traveling with young children, or if you find out too late that you don't enjoy the company of your fellow cruise mates.

Recommended Cruises

Best Traditional

Audley Travel's five-night itineraries aboard the Steam Ship Sudan offer the last word in exclusivity and Victorian-era refinement. The steamship, which was constructed in 1885 for King Fouad, was the direct inspiration for Agatha Christie's famous novel Death on the Nile and is still decorated in flawless Belle Epoque style. In each of its 18 cabins and five suites, period antiques range from brass beds to vintage telephones. And although the ship is now operated by a hybrid diesel/steam engine for optimum quietness, you can still view the original pistons and paddle wheels. Dining aboard the Steam Ship Sudan includes generous buffet breakfasts and lunches and stately four-course dinners.

Best Luxury

Despite its traditional exterior, the  Oberoi Philae  offers 22 cabins and suites decorated in the same style you might expect from a contemporary 5-star hotel. Each one includes a pillow-top mattress, high-speed WiFi, a multi-pressure shower, and 24-hour butler service. If you're feeling particularly decadent, splurge on a suite with its own private terrace, complete with a sun lounger and heated whirlpool tub. There are two restaurants to choose from, one for gourmet international cuisine, the other for light meals and beverages at the edge of the ship's temperature-controlled outdoor swimming pool. Other luxuries range from a movie theater and dance floor to a salon and spa treatment rooms.

Best Budget

Budget travelers should consider booking a felucca cruise like the ones offered by On The Go Tours . Feluccas are traditional Egyptian sailboats, the like of which have plied their trade on the Nile for centuries. They are wind-powered and as such have a more fluid itinerary; while their smaller size allows them to dock at places of interest that don't have the infrastructure for larger cruise ships. There is no luxury on a felucca cruise; you will sleep on deck in a sleeping bag that you bring with you; the food is basic and amenities are limited to a toilet and shower on the accompanying support boat. However, the experience is probably one of the most authentic (and certainly the cheapest) on the river.

Best for Families

Being trapped on a boat for an extended period of time can be challenging for families, especially if they include young children. This 10-day itinerary from Abercrombie & Kent gives you the best of both worlds with some land-based adventures in addition to a four-night Nile cruise. Your journey from Luxor to Aswan aboard Sanctuary Sun Boat IV is accompanied by an A&K Child Activity Coordinator whose job it is to keep your little ones entertained en route. The itinerary also includes plenty of interactive, hands-on fun that doubles as cultural education, from felucca sailing trips to camel rides, henna painting, and bread baking. A themed dinner and onboard costume party lets the kids dress up in traditional robes known as galabeyas .

The Last Word

Ultimately, whether or not a Nile cruise is the right choice for you depends on your personal preferences. If you like the idea of a cruise , the sheer variety of available options means that you're likely to find a vessel and/or operator to suit your needs. If the drawbacks listed above sound like deal-breakers for you, you're better off saving your money and organizing an alternative option instead.

Many thanks for great information!

Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

The review above does not reflect on the current state of affairs.

There are no reviews on TA specifically for Egyptian cruises , so people have posted their own on this forum. I'd like to do that, too. Three of us went on two cruises , a Nle River Cruise and a Lake Nasser cruise . Here are my brief reviews.

First a disclaimer: I've never been on a cruise , so I can't compare it to other cruises . However, my spouse and I have owned a motley flotilla over the years, and appreciate the joys and challenges of simple vessels on both salt and fresh waters.

Nile Cruise -- MS Nile Symphony, Presidential Nile Cruises (PNC). This group of 7 ships has been plying the waters of the Nile for decades. They have the benefit of years of experience: they know what works and what doesn't. The guides are excellent, the meals are bounteous and delicious, and the service and cleanliness are exceptional. These ships are not the newest, but as almost-vintage ships (with lots of bright work) they have great charisma and comfort, and are extremely well maintained. The scenery along the river is very beautiful and green, with lots of agricultural workers and animals, and calls to prayer from the scattered minarets.

All of the above qualities (except for the scenery) also apply to M/S Nubian Sea, which took us from Abu Simbel to Aswan on Lake Nasser. Nautically it is more challenging. The lake is much larger than the Nile, and being a reservoir there are submerged obstacles such as rocks and treetops to navigate around. When we were there the weather was extremely windy and cold, and there were always whitecaps. The ship is very large and stable, so that was never a problem for the passengers except that few spent much time on the decks. It was kind of fun to observe the roiling waves in the pool corresponding to the waves on the lake, and the stars at night made me wish I knew more about constellations. I imagine that in warm weather the decks and pool are heavily used, but when we were there in late December we had these areas pretty much to ourselves.

I heartily recommend, without reservation, either of these ships. If you have any questions I'll try my best to answer them.

bump for rotoole1. For this review I focused more on the ships than the itineraries, but here it is anyway. I hope it is helpful. I'll try to answer any questions you might have.

What are the cabins like on the Nubian Sea ? Are there upgrades that you know of ?

I agree wholeheartedly with the comments on the PNC boats.

It's great to hear that you too have happy memories of a PNC ship, Divadarling. They seem to be downgraded because of their age, but to me that is unimportant compared with the quality of service and maintenance. In fact, the quality of construction of these boats seems far better than some newer ones. "They don't make them like they used to." Guess I'm a real geezer.

To Brierfielders:

Our cabins were larger than the ones we had on the PNC cruise , but still smaller than a typical hotel room. They were in the middle third of the ship, just one level below the lounge. There was a small refrigerator, TV, dressing table and chair, luggage rack, closet with small safe, and small bathroom with toilet, sink and shower stall. We found the beds to be very comfortable, and of course the cabin was cleaned and towels changed every day. I really don't know about upgrades. I would guess that most of the cabins are identical. Our daughter was in one across the hall and it was the same, except that the beds were on a different wall. The cabins line a long corridor which goes the length of the ship, but maybe there are some larger cabins at the bow.

There are other places to relax on the ship besides the cabin. The lounge and two decks (one right above the lounge and one sternward of the lounge) were much larger than those on the PNC ship, although the plunge pool was smaller. The stern deck has a canvas cover over it, lots of patio tables and chairs with cushions, and a huge grill to one side of the stern. There is a good-sized pool table in the lounge and a dance floor, which was especially great for the whirling dervish and Nubian dancing. We had a blast, and I hope you will be able to go, too.

Thank you so much for your reply. You have answered all our reservations and 'worries' We are now going to book for the Nubian sea for next spring. Happy travelling to you and thanks

Am taking the tour in March, will let you know. So far, I can't find any reviews of this tour, perhaps it is new?

I am taking the same tour on March 4 so will be happy to provide critique and details. Wish there were some reviews on this trip. However, I was referred to smartours by someone who had taken several of their tours and been totally happy with the experience.

3- Lake Nasser Cruises

A Quick Review of Nile Cruises in Egypt 2023

Lake Nasser is one of the largest man-made lakes in the world, formed by the construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. The lake is in southern Egypt and extends into northern Sudan, creating a unique and remote environment for a Nile cruise. Lake Nasser cruises typically last between 3 and 4 days and offer the chance to explore lesser-known ancient Egyptian sites and the stunning natural beauty of the lake and its surroundings. Some of the highlights of a Lake Nasser cruise include the Temples of Abu Simbel , the Kalabsha Temple , and the Temple of Amada , all located on the lake’s shores.

How to book a trip on one of the cruise ferries on the Nile

Because more than 300 cruise ships leave from many ports, guests can choose from many other options. Before booking a Nile cruise, it’s a good idea to check out the ship’s amenities, its services, the trip’s schedule, and what other people have said about it. This information should be on the site of the cruise company if you follow this advice while on a cruise down the Nile, you’ll have a much better time.

Also, it would be best if you thought about the following things which are among the most important to think about:

  • The day the Cruise leaves port and starts its trip across the Nile.
  • The space of each room and the food on the Cruise.
  • User reviews on travel sites like Trip Advisor may provide valuable insight into how other consumers feel about a product.

When to take a Nile cruise trip?

Reviews of Nile Cruises

The peak season is from November to February, when temperatures are often lower than in the prior shoulder season (June to August), typically higher. It’s best to go in the morning when it’s cooler and spend the rest of the day doing things ashore, like shopping and seeing the Felucca. There will be more time for fun activities.

Check our article about When is the best time for a Nile cruise?

How to reach the Cruise?

From Luxor: You can reach Luxor in various ways:

  • From Cairo by train or internal flight.
  • From Hurghada, by bus or by car.
  • Flights also depart from Sharm El Sheikh.

From Aswan:

You can reach Aswan in various ways:

  • By bus from Hurghada.

Usually, the check-in time is 11:00 in the morning, before lunch. So, those who arrive early in the morning can start their tours directly after arriving from the airport or train station before it gets too hot.

The check-out time is 8:00 in the morning. If the return flight or train is in the afternoon, it is still possible to use the cruise facilities, but not the cabin or the restaurant, and you can also leave your luggage and do a few more laps.

Recommended clothing

During the day, it is preferable to wear light clothing due to the hot summer weather. It is advisable to wear opaque, not tight, but soft and comfortable clothing. Beach costumes are allowed on the Nile cruise. You can have breakfast and lunch in the same clothing, but it is recommended that you dress elegantly for dinner.

Entertainment on Cruises

On many cruises, a cocktail party is organized on the first day. During this event, complimentary drinks are served, and each manager introduces their crew to guests on board. Another event often organized is the festival in Galabia (traditional tunic), usually run by tour guides.

To participate in the party, you must have a Galabia, and you can buy one (around $ 10-15) and rent one from an onboard bazaar shop. Another type of entertainment is the Nubian show presented by Nubian dancers and singers dressed in their traditional costumes. Last night’s show consists of many performances, including a belly dance show and a show of Nubian jugglers, singers, and groups.

Nile River Cruise: 9 Tips to Perfectly Cruise the Nile in Egypt

nile symphony cruise reviews

Nile River cruises put you in the heart of ancient Egypt, just steps away from some of the most historic sites in the world. When cruising the Nile, you'll visit colorful bazaars, wander through ancient temples and learn about Egyptian deities, burial practices and culture.

If you're considering taking a river cruise on the Nile , properly prepare for your trip by checking out the following nine Nile cruise tips.

1. Cruising the Nile River 101

Cairo (Port Said) (Photo:Tunc Ozceber/Shutterstock)

When taking a Nile River cruise, you can either make your way south or north. If you're interested in the southbound option, you'll likely start your Nile river cruise in Cairo -- and for good reason.

Cairo is a bustling, vibrant city that's unlike anything many of us have experienced. Cairo is also home to the Great Pyramids and the Sphinx, though both require a bit of a journey from the city center.

Most Nile River cruise lines offer itineraries that bring guests in a day or three ahead of their cruise. Daily excursions will be offered to the best sites. The acclaimed Sphinx and the Pyramids are not to be missed.

Also located on the Giza Plateau is the Grand Egyptian Museum. This museum houses hundreds of thousands of antiquities, including those found in the tomb of the boy king, King Tut. You could spend days here, though most cruise excursions only stop here for a few hours.

From Cairo , you'll fly, usually by chartered plane, to Luxor , where you will join your cruise ship. Luxor is a magical port that's home to the famous Valley of the Kings. In some cases, you'll spend a couple days in Luxor to explore, either before or after your sailing.

While you can start your Nile cruise from Cairo, you also have the choice to make the journey in the opposite direction and travel northward. There are Nile River cruises from Aswan as well, typically making the same stops as those that start in Cairo or Luxor (depending on the specific itinerary and length).

Aswan is a historical city that holds ancient ruins, such as the Temple of Philae , a ruins complex located on Agilkia Island that was built in 280 BCE. The city offers other enticing excursions, like the Nubian Museum, which showcases the impressive history of Nubia (the area along the Nile between Aswan and Khartoum in Sudan).

Check out our Nile River Cruise map for a more detailed look at the options you have for a cruise on the Nile.

2. Nile River Cruise Itineraries: Short and Long Cruises for Every Style

Nile Adventurer

There is a Nile River cruise itinerary for every cruiser. However, the pace can be difficult, as some places are best viewed in the morning or at night, while others are perfect for the middle of the day. Ships often stop at two ports or more in a day.

3-Night Nile River Cruises: This shorter option usually departs from Aswan and sails to Luxor or vice versa.

You might visit the High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and the Temple of Philae in Aswan, Kom Ombo , Edfu and Esna. In Luxor, you'll see the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens and the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut.

4-Night Nile River Cruises: A four-night option leaves from Luxor and sails to Aswan or vice versa. You probably will see all of the above along with Luxor and Karnak temples, take a felucca (a traditional Egyptian sailboat) ride to the Botanical Island or a Nubian village, and see Elephantine Island and the Tombs of the Nobles.

For those who would like to extend their stay to see Abu Simbel Temple Complex , this is the cruise for you.

7-Night Nile River Cruises: Seven-night Nile River cruises from Aswan to Luxor or vice versa are also available. These itineraries include all of the above, but are divided over a week for a more relaxing trip.

Longer Nile River Cruise Vacations: Many of the big-name cruise lines offer longer journeys that generally include time in Cairo pre- and post-cruise. The cruise itself will be a round-trip sailing from Luxor or from Luxor to Aswan and will be similar to the seven-day options.

The payoff with these longer Nile River cruises is the extra time spent in Cairo, where you'll see the Giza Pyramids, the Sphinx and the impressive Grand Egyptian Museum.

3. Nile River Cruise Destinations: Vibrant Ports and Historic Sights Abound

Luxor (Photo:Elzbieta Sekowska/Shutterstock)

When you're cruising the Nile, you have the unique opportunity to witness and explore historical locations with ease. Here are some of the highlights you could see while on any of the above cruises on the Nile River.

Valley of the Kings : The tombs at the Valley of the Kings were constructed at some point during Egypt's New Kingdom period (1570 to 1069 BCE) and are still impressive even after all the finery was stolen by opportunistic gravediggers over the centuries.

The standard admission ticket includes three of 63 tombs. Ask your guide for recommendations of the best ones to see.

You can also pay extra to visit Tutankhamen's tomb. Although the treasures buried with King Tut are displayed at the Grand Egyptian Museum in Cairo, the tomb provides a glimpse of what is left of Egypt's most famous icon, the teenage king whose death remains a mystery.

Inside, there is a sarcophagus, painted walls showing his sisters and 11 baboons and King Tut's mummy.

Many cruise lines offer a morning hot-air balloon excursion over the Valley of the Kings. If you have a chance to try this, take it. It's an incredible voyage that shows the vastness of the Valley, the several cites still being unearthed and the contrast between the green banks of the Nile and the dry Sahara.

Temple of Karnak : This is the second-largest temple in the world (second only to Angkor Wat in Cambodia). The Temple of Karnak took 1,000 years to be built. When visiting this 200-acre temple, you can easily see the one-upmanship between a succession of pharaohs as you wander through it.

Look out for the statue of one of sun God Amun-Re 's incarnations -- a scarab beetle -- which symbolizes eternal life. Supposedly, if you walk around this sculpture three times, you're granted health, wealth and many children. But, if you walk around it five times, you'll get good luck and avoid envy.

Temple of Philae : Built to honor the goddess of motherhood and fertility, Isis, this was the last ancient temple built in the classical Egyptian architectural style. Construction began in approximately 280 BCE. The temple was moved from its original location on Philae Island to its new location on Agilkia Island after the flooding of Lake Nasser.

Don't miss the spectacular Sound and Light show at night here. Note the repurposing of the temple as a Christian church as well, with crosses carved into the older hieroglyph reliefs and images of the Egyptian gods carefully defaced. You'll also spot graffiti dating from the 1800s.

Luxor Temple : Above the upper part of Luxor Temple is a sacred mosque, built before the sand was swept away. On the outer walls you can faintly make out a painting of the last supper among the hieroglyphics, from a time when Christians were banned by the Romans from building churches.

Temple of Edfu : Dedicated to Horus, the falcon god of protection, Edfu is a Ptolemaic temple built in classic pharaonic style (237 to 57 B.C.) and is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt.

Start with the first pylon with its two magnificent falcons. Then, admire the carvings inside that illustrate the Festival of the Beautiful Meeting, in which the statue of Horus joined the statue of Hathor at her temple in Dendera.

Kom Ombo : Dedicated to the gods Sobek (the crocodile god) and Haroeris (the winged god of medicine and one of the oldest incarnations of Horus), the Temple of Kom Ombo is known for its wall reliefs, which show ancient surgical and dental tools. You can also see ancient mummified crocodiles in The Crocodile Museum .

4. Nile River Cruise Lines: Major Lines and Local Players Are Both Options

Viking Osiris (Photo: Colleen McDaniel)

Nile River cruise lines appeal to a wide range of passengers. A number of cruise lines sail the Nile River, from bigger companies who sail around the world to smaller companies that specialize in only Egypt.

Cruise lines sailing the Nile River include Viking , Avalon Waterways , Abercrombie & Kent , Sanctuary Retreats , AmaWaterways , Movenpick, eWaterways, Uniworld , Sonesta Nile Cruises, Nile Exploration, Oberoi and Travcoa.

Luxury Nile River cruises have become a big part of the experience. The top luxury Nile River cruises are Uniworld, Viking, Sanctuary Retreats and Abercrombie & Kent.

Some ocean cruise lines, such as P&O Cruises , MSC Cruises and Silversea offer day trips to Luxor and Aswan when their ships dock in Safaga on the coast of the Red Sea. It's an alternative way to visit some of the famous temples while seeing more than just the Nile.

5. Nile River Cruise Packing: What to Bring on Your Adventure

Viking Osiris christening ceremony on the Nile (Photo: Colleen McDaniel)

What to Wear on a Nile Cruise: Women

More than 90% of the citizens of Egypt are Muslims. Most local women wear modest dress, including head covers. Long-sleeved tops and ankle-length skirts are the norm for Egyptian women.

That being said, visitors to the area aren't expected to dress in the same fashion. Still, shorts and tank tops may draw looks among more conservative Egyptians.

However, you should still pack less revealing clothing to show respect, especially in religious areas that require such wear. Note that mosques require everyone to have their legs and arms covered.

A wardrobe of loose capris or trousers and blouses will make you feel more comfortable. We're big fans of linen, which is breathable even in the heat and wears well. Stick with light colors (whites and pastels), as dark colors will simply absorb the heat.

Bring along a floppy hat, sunglasses and a scarf, all of which can assist in protecting you from the sun and heat. You'll definitely need reliable walking shoes as well.

Many cruises offer an Egyptian night, where guests are encouraged to wear a jalabiya , which is a traditional Egyptian gown. These can be purchased in ports for less than $15 or $20.

Onboard your ship, sleeveless tops or dresses and shorter skirts are acceptable.

What to Wear on a Nile Cruise: Men

For men, anything goes when it comes to dress code . Still, you will probably stand out if you wear shorts, as most Egyptians wear trousers or jalabiya.

A good sun hat, great walking shoes and sunglasses are encouraged as well. For Egyptian night, men also will wear jalabiya, which can be purchased in port.

What Else to Pack for a Nile River Cruise

Be aware that Egypt has a hot climate no matter the time of year, so staying hydrated is a must. It's likely that your cruise line will provide ample bottled water for you, so you probably won't need a reusable water bottle.

Keep in mind that tap water in Egypt has been known to upset travelers' stomachs. In fact, you'll likely be brushing your teeth with bottled water. You should also avoid raw vegetables and swimming in the Nile or its canals because of the risk of exposure to bacterial and other infections. Be sure to always peel fruits before eating them.

Anti-diarrheal medication and antacids can really come in handy in case any issues should arise, so you should pack these along as a precaution.

You will need a good bug spray, as flying pests -- mosquitoes and flies in particular -- are ever-present. Don't forget your sunscreen as well.

6. Nile River Cruise Weather: Aim for Shoulder Season or Winter Months

Infinity Pool aboard Viking Osiris (Photo: Colleen McDaniel)

Since the Aswan High Dam opened in 1971, the Nile River depth has been regulated, depending on the needs of navigation and irrigation. It generally doesn't face the same high- or low-water issues that sometimes affect Europe's rivers . So even in the hottest weather, you'll have smooth sailing.

Egypt river cruises on the Nile mostly run from August through May, pausing for the extreme heat of summer. The best time to cruise the Nile River is October to April in terms of weather. However, be prepared to experience crowds during this time because it's the busiest season.

These shoulder seasons , which are spring and fall, come with milder temperatures that range between 70 to 90 degrees. Temperatures drop significantly at night, down into the 50s in the spring.

Offseason Weather Is Wildly Variable, But You'll See Fewer Tourists

If you travel to Egypt in August and even into September, it is brutally hot, with daytime temperatures reaching 110 degrees and above. This can curb your sightseeing resolve, as you will find yourself walking among ancient ruins under the blazing sun.

That said, guides truly pay attention to their guests, and they seek shade whenever possible. You'll also have far fewer street vendors vying for your attention than you would in the high season.

Egypt cruises in the winter are significantly cooler, especially at night. You'll see a range of temperatures from the 50s to 70s, and you'll be fairly comfortable when you're out on your excursions.

7. Nile River Cruise Costs: Look to Short Cruises for a Bargain

Embarking on a sunrise hot air balloon excursion over the Valley of the Kings (Photo: Colleen McDaniel)

The cost of a Nile River cruise varies greatly depending on what cruise lines you book with, the length of your cruise and when you're sailing.

If you book with the cruise lines best known to American and European travelers -- companies like Viking, AmaWaterways, Abercrombie & Kent, Avalon Waterways and Uniworld -- you'll pay a higher price than you would with less familiar companies, such as Movenpick, Oberoi and Sonesta.

For a 10-day trip with the more popular cruise lines, you are likely to pay anywhere from about $3,900 per person to $7,600. You might pay somewhere from $5,200 to $12,300 for a 12-day journey. The cost generally includes your hotel, transfers, cruise, all your meals, some alcohol and even the flight from Cairo to Luxor.

With less familiar Nile cruise lines, shorter itineraries are more common. You can find three-night cruises starting at around $600 per person and four-night journeys from $750. Seven-night cruises can start as low as $1,200 but are less inclusive.

Cruises during the fall and into the winter, especially around the holidays , are the most expensive, while cruises in the heat of summer are the cheapest.

Extra Costs on a Nile River Cruise

Depending on your chosen river cruise line, you should expect to pay extra for certain items.

Some examples of for-fee items on a Nile River cruise in Egypt include alcoholic drinks onboard outside of mealtime, tips for crew , guides and drivers, flights to and from Egypt, add-on cruise extensions (Jordan is a popular add-on), and spa treatments or shopping. Some premium shore excursions also will come with a cost.

Carry some small Egyptian coins because tipping for services, like the bathroom attendant, is a common practice. You can pay in U.S. dollars, euros or pounds, but change will be given in Egyptian pounds, and the exchange won't be favorable.

8. Is a Nile River Cruise Safe?

Entrance to the Abu Simbel temple complex (Photo: Anton_Ivanov/Shutterstock.com)

A Nile River cruise is as safe as most major river cruises around the world. While this region has seen spasms of religious violence in the past, there have been no terrorist incidents along the Nile in more than 10 years.

That being said, it's likely that you'll have armed escorts onboard your cruise ship and as you're visiting ports and seeing the sights. For many people, this can be a bit jarring but also somewhat reassuring.

Note: As with virtually everyone else you'll encounter doing service work in Egypt, tipping guards is an acceptable -- and sometimes expected -- practice, especially if you have the same guard the entire week. A rate of $2 U.S. per person, per day is a good guideline.

9. Nile River Cruise Shopping: Put Your Bargaining Skills to the Test

Aswan, Egypt (Photo: Marcel Bakker/Shutterstock)

Vendors are aggressive in Egypt, and this can make some guests uncomfortable. They will approach you closely, speaking perfect English, and try to put their goods in your hands. But don't confuse their intensity for danger.

If you're not interested in purchasing anything, simply ignore them and their attempts. Don't make eye contact or even say no. Wearing sunglasses can be especially helpful here.

If you do decide to buy something, know that just about everything is negotiable. This is especially true with the vendors, who sell all manner of souvenirs near the monuments' docks. Their pitches seem benign enough, but they can be aggressive once they have your attention.

A general rule of thumb: Offer half the asking price to start, and don't hand over any money until your purchase price has been settled and the item is in your hand. Also, take care to study your change. Pound notes and the much smaller piaster notes look similar.

Nile cruise

I booked 3 days in Hurghada and 7 nights on a Nile cruise with Hvezda. Although the organisation was chaotic and I was put in a different hotel and a different boat to the ones booked, overall the holiday experience was fantastic. This was largely down to our fantastic tour guide Hany (H) who was very knowledgeable, caring and really good fun to be around. I would definitely recommend Hany as a guide but I wouldn’t recommend Hvezda unless you’re prepared for your travel plans to be changed without any notice.

The team in Egypt was excellent! Each guide gave fully of himself and treated us like family. They gave us five star attention and shared their stories. I am grateful for each member who loved their clients and their job.

I stayed in Cairo for 4 nights and stayed on a cruise ship on the Nile River for 4 nights and I had an amazing time. The Hvezda team was awesome. They were well organized, very professional, knowledgeable, helpful, informative, and accommodating. Special thanks to Diaa for helping me decide to ride in the hot air balloon at sunrise - It was truly amazing. A very special thanks to Aseem Abdo who was very helpful and accommodating. He made sure me and my friend had a great time in Cairo, helped us book tours for the days we stayed on the cruise ship and made everything go so smoothly - You’re the best! For anyone interested, I recommend wearing sneakers on the tours and please keep in mind that the tours are fast paced and require a lot of walking.

Thanks Hvezda Travel Agency for making my trip the Best!! Special shout out to Aseem_Abdu a true professional hustler! A man that works very hard to try an accommodate his customers and to get the job done! Aseem made sure that me and my girlfriend ate the best foods, we saw the best bellies dancers and dinner show, and hooked us up with the right tours ABU,Simbel and Karmark Temples and so many more.!!! Aseem also-made sure we got to the airport in time of our flights. Whenever I come back to Egypt Hvezda is where I would go to!! Thank you so much!!

Arrived at Hugarda airport to be told by the Hvezda agent our holiday had been cancelled! However the agent only took two hours to sort out another Hotel, we were booked into the Swiss Inn Resort and moved to the Sea Star, it was OK but in a shabby location ! Our holiday was a week in a hatel and a week river cruise on the Nile Our entire holiday schedule was also changed! The transfer bus from Hugarda to Luxor was not fit for purpose, broken seats, no toilet, and no Hvezda rep on coach the driver did not speek English! We were told the transfer would take four to four and a half hours, Seven & halfs later we arrived in Luxor. The cruise was not on the scheduled boat it was also changed it was really a river bus. The only positive was the tour guild Mohammed who was very informative and did pull the cruise together. For our return transfer to Hugarda we made our own way back via GO Bus Our First and Last trip to Egypt!

your holiday booking was cancelled from UK travel agent so we took you to Sea star hotel under our responsibility until we got reply to say that it was cancelled by mistake then we gave you the service required . for the journey to Luxor it was 5 hotels to collect after Sea star because it is shuttle transfer not private then the police escort convoy sometime can take longer time

Hvezda tour guides were outstanding. They arranged everything seamlessly plus if we were thirsty they bought water; if we were hungry on the road they bought potato chips. They were accommodating, friendly, humorous, knowledgeable and they looked after our safety. If we had an issue after hours and we had to text for help they responded immediately. We were very pleased with their excellent service and we personally wish each tour guide who put in so much effort for our trip the very best.
