Top Things To Do In Chicago At Night

As a resident of Chicago, I can tell you there's plenty to do at night if you know where to look.

Whether it's music, fine dining, theatre, comedy, tours, or more, you'll have your choice of activities.

One of my favorites is to head to Second City to see comedy improv. There's excitement about the possibly of seeing the next comedy great.

Some of the top comedians from my childhood performed there such as John Candy, Bill Murray, and Chris Farley. More recent favorites have been Steve Carrell, Amy Poehler, and Tina Fey.

As Chicago is the city where "the blues found its voice," I'm always able to find live blues music at venues such as Kingston Mines and Buddy's Guy's Legends.

There are dozens of other things to do at night, so I've written this post to give you some ideas of where to look. It includes free, family-friendly, and seasonal attractions and activities.

You can also visit the House of Blues which in addition to live music has a bar and a Southern-inspired restaurant, or the United Center which has sports, concerts, musicals, comedy shows, and other entertainment.

7. Stay After Hours at a Museum

Many of the top museums in Chicago offer after-hours, adults-only events with cocktails, special tours, and smaller crowds at the exhibits.

You could look to Adler At Night , MSI After Hours , or Shedd After Hours for nighttime activities.

The Museum of Contemporary Art also offers screenings, talks, theatre, live art, and more.

In the past, the Museum of Contemporary Art Tuesdays on the Terrace offered free concerts from Chicago's music community between June and August. It is hoped that will return this year.

With access to the museum, there are many MCA In Progress Evening Exhibits that are free (or cheap) to visit.

Once in a while the Museum of Science and Industry's Science Snoozeum takes place offering kids a chance to explore the museum, take part in activities, and spend the night.

A similar program can be found st the Field Museum Dozin' with the Dinos , where families and groups with kids ages 6-12 can spend the night.

The Notebaert Nature Museum's Bunking with the Butterflies event allows friends and family to spend a night at the museum, meet live animals, and take part in nature and science activities.

8. Grab a Bite to Eat

What else should you do when visiting a new city? If nothing else, make sure you try some of the famous Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza .

Explore the Harold Washington Library

One of the nation’s largest and most impressive libraries is located in downtown Chicago and is open until 8 pm.

Summer Festivals

Chicago is famous for its free summer festivals.

Throughout the summer, you can find the House Music Festival, Gospel Fest, Blues Fest, the Taste of Chicago, Jazz Fest, and World Music Festival.

Music goes well into the night and features some of the top acts in each genre, taking place on the biggest outdoor stages in downtown Chicago.

On a smaller scale, most of Chicago’s neighborhoods host a local street festival throughout the warmer months, some of which are free admission.

Ice Skating in the Winter

From mid-November to mid-March, whenever the weather permits, Millennium Park hosts the McCormick Tribune Ice Rink, free and open to the public.

The Logan Square neighborhood is a trendy scene for nightlife, and two bars, in particular, have no-cover events almost nightly.

OK. Admittedly purchasing a tourist attraction pass isn't free, in fact, these passes can seem expensive.

The object of these all-inclusive passes is to experience as many things in a day as you have time for but save money doing it.

These passes are sold in increments of days, and the longer the pass the less the daily cost is.

So, if you plan efficiently, you will end up getting free access to several tours and attractions.

Family Fun at Navy Pier

No list of evening activities for the whole family would be complete without highlighting Navy Pier.

One of the most visible images along Chicago’s lakeshore is the Centennial Wheel, a giant Ferris wheel in Pier Park that gives an incredible view of the city- especially with the glittering lights at night.

There's also a Carousel, tea cup rides, and a wave swinger, amongst other amusement park rides.

Navy Pier hosts the Chicago Children’s Museum and the Chicago Shakespeare Theater .

During the summertime- stick around for the fireworks that are on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Tip : Admission into Navy Pier is free; each ride will require paid tickets. Parking can be pricey, so be on the lookout for the seasonally-operated Free Navy Pier Trolley Service, which stops at the Grand/State Red Line stop.

No. Reservations are not necessary for daytime tours, though you are welcome to purchase tickets in advance online . We also encourage advance purchase online or dockside if you desire to cruise a particular date and time and want to guarantee your seats aboard.

We do advise that you buy CHICAGO BY NIGHT! and 3D Fireworks Cruise tickets in advance – online or at the box office – as these tickets are extremely popular.

Online we accept Visa and MasterCard. At our dockside ticket office, we accept cash, Visa and MasterCard.

Beverages – including water, soda, canned cocktails, beer, and wine – are available for purchase on board. Please note, no outside alcoholic beverages are allowed.

All of our Urban Adventure Cruise and Chicago By Night! tours pass through the Chicago River Lock System. Our guide/narrator gives a full explanation of the operation of the lock. You’ll feel the boat rise as you enter Lake Michigan and lower as you return to the River. Saturday departures for our 3D Fireworks Cruise also go through the Chicago River Lock.

All of our vessels are regulated, licensed and inspected by the United States Coast Guard (USCG) every year, and have undergone stability testing to ensure our guests are safe on their waterway experience. Our captains and deckhands go through an extensive training and drilling program that goes above and beyond the standards set by the USCG. Because we are committed to continuing education, we provide extra training every day to our crew.

No. Luggage is not allowed aboard the Mercury vessels. Please leave your luggage at your hotel or check your bags in at a hotel near the dock (be sure to confirm in advance the ability for the hotel to accommodate you). Also, please be aware that all bags (purses, backpacks, etc.) are checked before boarding.

Yes, strollers may be brought aboard and will be folded and stored in the indoor salon for the duration of the cruise. They are not allowed on the deck. Please note, children must be removed from strollers before boarding.

In accordance with ADA guidelines, we welcome service dogs onboard. The service animal must be harnessed, leashed, or tethered while in public places unless these devices interfere with the service animal's work or the person's disability prevents use of these devices. Emotional support animals, pets and other animals not covered by the ADA are not permitted. All dogs are welcome on  Mercury's Canine Cruise ! Please visit the ADA's FAQ on service animals for further details.

Boarding begins 15 minutes prior to scheduled departure time. Choose any seat - all offer a great view!

Children under 5 are always welcome free of charge, but do still require a ticket. Folded strollers may be brought on board. Children’s rates available for kids 5-15 years old.

At this time the Riverwalk does not offer any elevators. For those who need ADA ramps, you may access the Riverwalk via the ADA ramp at State Street and Wacker Drive within the Vietnam Memorial Park. Then just follow the Riverwalk to the East under the Michigan Avenue Bridge. Our Ticket Office is marked with a blue awning. Our stairway offers handrails, and shade from the sun. For guests needing special vehicle drop-off assistance, click here for Mobility Assistance directions.

For safety reasons, motorized scooters and electric wheelchairs cannot be accommodated aboard the ship. Guests who can transfer may use the company's manual wheelchair, based upon availability. Please note guests using manual wheelchairs must be accompanied by individuals who are capable of assisting/lifting the wheelchair over the boat’s threshold. Under Federal law and due to special marine safety construction guidelines, USCG-regulated small vessels are not subject to land-based architectural configuration requirements. Although we do our best to accommodate passengers with limited mobility consistent with our vessel capabilities, staffing and the docking space which is publicly owned and controlled, we can do a better job with advance notice .

Things to Do in Chicago at Night

Located on the shore of Lake Michigan in the United States, Chicago, Illinois is a glorious city with a population of 3 million people.

Perfectly blending the hustle and bustle of city life with a degree of friendliness that you’d expect from a small town, this diverse area is a must-visit metropolitan wonder.

With so many things to do here, luckily you have plenty of hours in a day!

After all, Chicago is a city that stays alive even as the daytime descends.

1. Stroll Navy Pier

Navy Pier is home to a large outdoor green space, called Polk Bros Park, as well as a 3,300-foot pier that stretches out from Chicago’s shoreline into Lake Michigan.

The pier is located at 600 E. Grand Avenue and is easily accessible via walking paths, car, or public transportation.

Attractions at Navy Pier include restaurants, shopping, outdoor carnival rides, a Ferris wheel, Navy Pier events, scenic boat tours, and  even its own hotel .

Navy Pier is, by far, one of the best things to do in Chicago during both the day and at night, as guests are free to visit until 9:00 PM on weeknights and 10:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

Take note, however, that Navy Pier guests under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays after 5 PM.

2. Ride the Centennial Wheel

While visiting Navy Pier at night, take a ride on Chicago’s iconic Centennial Wheel .

The gigantic Centennial Wheel Ferris wheel stretches over 200 feet up into the Chicago skyline and provides riders with a 360 degrees view of Chicago and Lake Michigan.

You’ll love the safe feeling of the completely enclosed 8-passenger gondolas that reach high into the sky.

Centennial Wheel rides are available until 8 PM from Sunday through Thursday, and until 10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

3. Visit the Alder Planetarium

The Alder Planetarium is a museum located in Chicago’s Museum Campus that is dedicated to astronomy and space.

Though the museum typically closes at 4 PM, if you’re lucky enough to be in town on a Wednesday night, check out Alder at Night!

Alder Planetarium is open until 10 PM on Wednesdays, as well as is free to Illinois residents on Wednesdays too!

Buy your tickets online before heading over for an evening under the stars for date night, after-work fun, or to let loose after a long day.

4. Experience the Chicago Symphony Orchestra

Experience one of the greatest orchestras in the world and catch an evening with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra .

Chicago Symphony Orchestra, located in Orchestra Hall, is home to dozens of various world premieres and musical masterpieces.

Though some shows begin in the afternoon, most of the classical performances begin at 7:30 or 8:00 PM.

They do over 150 concerts every year, so you always have a good chance of scoring last-minute tickets to one of their events.

5. Cheer on the Chicago Cubs

Stop by Wrigley Field and cheer on the Chicago Cubs Major League Baseball team at their home stadium!

The Chicago Cub’s season runs from the end of April to the beginning of October with most evening home games starting between 6:40 and 7:05 PM.

The stadium itself is worth visiting, even without seeing a game.

Take a picture under the red marquee entrance and enjoy one of the oldest ballparks in the National League.

6. Stroll the Chicago Riverwalk

The Chicago Riverwalk is a 1.25-mile paved path and waterfront park space found along the south bank of the Chicago River.

The Riverwalk is located in the heart of Downtown Chicago and extends from Lake Shore Drive and Lake Michigan to Lake Street.

It is home to bars, restaurants, lookout points, boat rentals, tours, and theater-style seating for outdoor performances. 

Once the sun goes down, the Chicago Riverwalk becomes one of the best places in the city for an outdoor stroll.

Catch some live music or enjoy a glass of wine while taking in the view of the glistening river.

7. Visit Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park

Grant Park is a large urban green space located along Lake Michigan in Downtown Chicago.

Grant Park is home to Millenium Park, Maggie Daley Park, Chicago’s Museum Campus, and Buckingham Fountain.

As one of the largest fountains in the world, the Buckingham Fountain runs from early May to mid-October (when temperatures are above freezing).

Every twenty minutes until 11:00 PM, the fountain performs an amazing water display that is free of charge to watch.

At dusk, lights and music accompany the 150 feet water jets, making it a warm evening must-do.

8. Check out a Chicago Bears Game

If baseball isn’t your thing, try seeing a Chicago Bears football game at Soldier Field.

In addition to hosting NFL games, Solider Field is also the home of the Chicago Fire (Major Soccer League).

You’re sure to find a fun evening of entertainment at either game.

9. Eat at Magnificent Mile

Located on Michigan Avenue, the Magnificent Mile shopping district is one of the best places to grab a bite to eat in the evening.

With over 275 restaurants, you’re sure to find something to eat for every tastebud.

Yes, you can even find some authentic Chicago deep-dish pizza – one of Chicago’s famous foods that you don’t want to miss!

Afterward, stroll among the beautifully lit shops of Mag Mile while admiring the year-round twinkling white lights that decorate the outdoor trees.

10. Visit Skydeck Chicago

Formerly known as the Sears Tower, Willis Tower is one of the most notable skyscrapers of the Chicago skyline.

For 41 years, it was the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere!

As one of the absolute things to do in Chicago, visitors can enjoy the spectacular views of the city from the 103 rd floor of Willis Tower at Chicago’s Skydeck attraction.

A ticket to visit Skydeck includes a 30-60 minute interactive queue area where you can learn all about “the best of” Chicago.

Afterward, you’ll ride the elevator up to the 103rd floor of Willis Tower where the most spectacular views of the city await.

Next, you’ll have an opportunity to stand and take photos on The Ledge, which is a glass balcony that extends four feet  outside the walls of the building .

Being suspended over the city in this way is both terrifying and amazing at the same time!

Skydeck is open until 10 PM 7-days a week with the last entry being 30-minutes prior to closing.

11. Go to The Chicago Theatre

Chicago has a booming arts scene!

Located in the heart of downtown Chicago, The Chicago Theatre, for instance, is one of the country’s most iconic venues and a great place to experience the city’s history.

As one of the first lavish movie palaces in the United States, it became a model for many others.

Now at The Chicago Theatre, you can see everything from musicians to comedians perform in the venue.

12. Hit up The Signature Lounge

If you’re feeling like an extra special night out, stop by The Signature Lounge for cocktails and light fare.

Located on the 96 th floor of 875 North Michigan Avenue (formerly known as the John Hancock Center), you can watch the sun go down while you enjoy a world-class drink.

What makes this cocktail lounge such a unique Chicago experience is the incredible panoramic views of the city!

Ranked among the best restaurants in Chicago, The Signature Room is an experience you don’t want to miss.

13. Book a Boat Tour

Everyone who visits Chicago needs to see the skyline at night.

One of the best ways to see this is by booking an evening tour on one of the many boat companies that offer themed cruises down the Chicago River.

Glide up the river and along Lake Michigan while you take in the sights and scenes of Chicago while enjoying a beverage or two on a dinner cruise, sightseeing cruise, or more…

14. Go to The Green Mill

Speakeasies are one of the most infamous aspects of Chicago’s past and remain a major attraction today.

While no longer a hidden bar, The Green Mile was run by a notorious gangster (and known Al Capone associate) ‘Machine Gun’ Jack McGurn.

Today, The Green Mill remains almost identical to what it was back in the prohibition days.

It has live performances of jazz music every night and tasty cocktails.

Hours are: Sunday – Thursday, open until 1 AM; Fridays and Saturdays, open until 2 AM.

15. Get Tickets for The Second City

Looking to laugh and let off some steam?

Every night at The Second City, you can catch live shows from up-and-coming comedians as well as some of the best names in the comedy biz.

The most famous alumni from The Second City school include Bill Murray, Eugene Levy, Mike Meyers, Steve Carrell, Bill Hader, and many more!

16. Relax at a Rooftop Bar

Overlook the city, enjoy the fresh air, and sip a cocktail at one of these popular rooftop bars in Chicago!

A popular destination for Chicago locals, Cindy’s atop the Chicago Athletic Association Hotel offers views over Millennium Park and Lake Michigan.

At Raised , you can sit inside or outside on the third floor of the Renaissance Chicago Downtown.

On Friday and Saturday nights, head to Cerise Rooftop on the 26 th floor of the Virgin Hotel and listen to a live DJ while you mingle with friends.

17. Master The Escape Game

Escape rooms are one of the great options to do with kids when you’re trying to fill a quiet or rainy evening.

One of the best in the city, The Escape Game , is open until midnight.

It has five different adventures to choose from – take a trip to Mars, escape the prison bars, search for gold, return a lost painting, or uncover the truth as a field agent.

18. See a Broadway Show

If you love live entertainment, don’t miss out on one of the best things to do in the evening in Chicago…catch a Broadway show!

At any time, there are always multiple performances happening in Chicago from some of the most sought-after and Tony award-winning shows.

Grab last-minute tickets or look in advance at all the shows performing while you’re in town .

19. Check for Special Events at Lincoln Park Zoo

Check the event calendar in order to catch an adult’s night at the Lincoln Park Zoo !

Complete with alcoholic beverages, you can enjoy one of these ticketed events right in the heart of the city.

Note that the zoo is normally free except for these special events that include craft brew festivals, adult-night-out summer block parties, and holiday parties.

20. Go to a Chicago Blackhawks Game

Chicago is blessed with so many sports teams.

If you’re a hockey lover, then you won’t want to miss seeing the Chicago Blackhawks play in their home arena, United Center.

One of the original six NHL teams, you’ll be watching a good game for sure!

21. Head to a Skating Rink

If you’re visiting Chicago in the winter, one of the most fun things to do is enjoy one of Chicago’s many seasonal ice skating rinks.

Typically, most are open mid-November through March, with some hosting evening hours.

22. Check out Topgolf Chicago

Swing the club year-round at Topgolf in Schaumburg.

While it’s a little bit out of the way from the city center, it’s well worth the effort for golf fans and has operating hours that last well into the night.

(Topgolf Chicago is open until 11 PM Sunday – Thursday and until 12 AM on Fridays and Saturdays.)

Enjoy Topgolf’s three floors’ worth of entertainment whether it be golfing from one of their over 100 climate-controlled bays or watching sports via the 200 HDTVs.

After golfing, enjoy the rooftop terrace and its fire pits, sit at the sports bar, and/or catch a bite to eat.

Reservations are recommended, but not required.

23. Do a Chicago Crimes Tour

Many know the windy city for its notorious past.

At night, take a bus ride with Chicago Crimes Night Tour to experience life with some of the world’s most famous gangsters.

You’ll see some of the most iconic landmarks as well as crime scenes.

If you’re a true crime junkie, this nighttime Chicago activity is a must-do.

24. Spend the Early Evening at Shedd Aquarium

Open until 6:00 pm, head to the Shedd Aquarium for late afternoon and early evening gazing at creatures found beneath the deep blue waters.

In addition, watch out for newly released Shedd After Hours dates and times!

Shedd After Hours is a time for adults 21+ to relax, take in spectacular skyline views and experience special events such as sought-after DJs or bands, animal encounters, and science stories.

25. Try a New Brew

An experience that can be enjoyed any time during the afternoon and evening, be sure to check out some of Chicago’s many breweries.

After all, Chicago is a favorite hidden-gem beer city by many!

Best Month to Visit Chicago

The best time for a Chicago getaway is during the months of May, June, September, and October.

In other words, plan a trip to Chicago when the weather is mild during the late spring, early summer, and early fall.

In addition, be sure to consider  what to wear in Chicago  depending on when you visit, as the weather varies drastically.

Though Chicago in summer can be hot and humid, many are drawn to the area during this time in order to take advantage of its lake activities and outdoor events.

Keep in mind, however, that Chicago gets very busy with tourists over the weekends and holidays.

Where to Stay in Chicago

If you’re planning a vacation in Chicago, IL, there are several options on  where to stay in Chicago .

Regardless, be sure to stay downtown so that you can do as little driving around as possible.

Choices downtown include staying within the Magnificent Mile, The Loop, or River North neighborhoods.

The Magnificent Mile is close to the John Hancock Building, Navy Pier, and upscale shopping.

The Loop is close to the Willis Tower and Millennium Park.

On the other hand, River North hotels are still within walking distance of major attractions but provide more budget-friendly options that often include pools and free breakfast.

Getting to Chicago

If you’re heading to Chicago, visitors typically travel there via plane, train, bus, or personal vehicle.

Chicago’s central location and the fact that it is accessible by many major interstates and highways make it easy to get there by car.

Be aware that there are several Illinois tollways as you drive into the city, so be sure to have spare dollar bills on hand.

If traveling from a farther distance, however, search for flights into either O’Hare International Airport or Chicago Midway International Airport.

O’Hare (ORD) is a gigantic international airport that services multiple airlines, while Midway (MDW) offers more convenient access to the city but with far fewer choices of flights.

How to Get Around Chicago

Chicago is a walkable city meaning that when staying downtown, the majority of the popular restaurants, sites, and attractions are all within walking distance of one another.

If staying downtown you simply do not need a car to get around once there.

For longer stretches, Uber vehicles are highly prevalent and can typically be found within 2 – 3 minutes of any given address.

In addition, Chicago is well-known for its convenient street system and its fantastic  public transit system .

There are several spots along the Riverwalk where you can stop and sit to admire the view.

You’ll also find spots where live musicians are playing and there are riverfront patios where you can enjoy a glass of wine.

Visit The Green Mill

The Green Mill is a famous cocktail lounge in Chicago that comes alive every night.

You can find everything from big-name musicians to locals jamming late into the night at The Green Mill.

Bands play nightly from 8 pm to midnight, and each night there is a different theme.

On Tuesday and Thursdays, you’ll be able to break out your dancing shoes. Those are the nights that the bands play dancing music!

They also offer poetry slams on the third Sunday of every month, which is a cool Chicago night event.

There are a few things to keep in mind when you visit The Green Mill.

They don’t accept reservations, they don’t make mojitos or drinks with egg whites, and they are strictly cash only.

Inaugural 'Jeopardy!' fan experience kicks off at Manhattan's Hudson Yards

MANHATTAN, New York -- 'Jeopardy!' is celebrating its diamond anniversary in style right here in New York City!

The iconic quiz show is kicking off its national tour with an event Friday night at the Edge in Hudson Yards.

It will feature special guest appearances, a live taping of the 'Inside Jeopardy!' podcast, and of course, a chance for guests to play 'Jeopardy!' alongside host Ken Jennings.

New York City is the perfect location to do this celebration, since it was where the original 'Jeopardy!' pilot episode was shot back in 1964.

Eyewitness News entertainment reporter Joelle Garguilo caught up with Ken Jennings ahead of the event.

"We have named the stage, the Alex Trebek Stage," Jennings said. "And the great thing about every game saying those things that he used to, is I can almost hear his voice, like when somebody misses a Daily Double, or if everybody misses the same clue. There's something Alex would usually say there, and I can hear it in my head, which is nice."

Jennings added, "He liked to talk about movies and tell jokes. I've heard him do accents. I've seen him do little bits of soft shoe, which TV viewers rarely got to enjoy a lovely man."

It's clear, you can't talk about the legacy of the show without mentioning Trebek, and Google is no exception.

25th anniversary tour of 'Chicago' brings 'Razzle Dazzle' to OKC: What you need to know

More than 25 years after its wildly successful revival, the iconic musical "Chicago" has lost none of its "Razzle Dazzle."

While the themes are still as timely as ever, the Tony Award-winning tale of murder, greed and all that jazz is literally the stuff of legends: Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse wrote the book for the show, a sultry and sophisticated satire about the American press, criminal justice system and obsession with celebrity. "Chicago" boasts one of the all-time great musical theater scores , with music by John Kander and lyrics by Ebb, and it remains one of the most popular showcases for Fosse's distinctively jazzy choreography .

An add-on special to OKC Broadway's 2023-24 subscription season , the national tour of "Chicago" is playing Oklahoma City for the first time in a decade , with performances continuing through Sunday, April 14 at Civic Center Music Hall.

What is the musical 'Chicago' about?

The longest-running show currently playing on Broadway , "Chicago" is set in the 1920s and inspired by true events. Initially written as a 1926 play by journalist Maurine Dallas Watkins , the musical adaptation's original Broadway production bowed in 1975 and starred Chita Rivera , Jerry Orbach and Gwen Verdon . It ran for more than 900 performances and was nominated for 11 Tonys, but shut out by another dance smash, "A Chorus Line."

Starring Bebe Neuwirth, Joel Grey and Ann Reinking — a replacement performer from the original Broadway production who reprised the role and choreographed the show "in the style of Bob Fosse" — it was the 1996 Broadway revival that turned "Chicago" into an iconic song-and-dance extravaganza. It earned six Tonys, including best musical revival, and is being celebrated with the 25th anniversary tour now playing OKC.

The deliciously dastardly story follows Roxie Hart (2021 Oklahoma City University alumnus Katie Frieden ), a vain and ambitious housewife and nightclub dancer who dreams of becoming a vaudeville star. When her illicit lover, Fred Casely (Ed Gotthelf), tries to ditch her, hotheaded Roxie guns him down and tries to get her devoted but dim-witted husband Amos (Robert Quiles) to take the blame.

That doesn't work, so Roxie is locked up on the women's block in the Cook County Jail, where several "merry murderesses" are awaiting trial for killing their no-good husbands or boyfriends. The block is run by corrupt Matron "Mama" Morton (Illeana "illy" Kirven), who is happy to help the inmates use the charges against them to gain fame and fortunate — but only for a price.

Desperate to avoid being hanged for murder, Roxie sets out to outwit the public, the press and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly (Kailin Brown), a cynical ex-vaudeville star rightly accused of slaying her cheating husband and sister in a jealous rage. Roxie enlists Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer, Billy Flynn (Connor Sullivan), to both cast her as a sympathetic figure so she can avoid conviction and nab her enough scandalous headlines so that she can launch the show-biz career of her dreams.

How does the 25th anniversary tour of 'Chicago' measure up to all that jazz?

It's not hard to figure out why "Chicago" is the second-longest running title in Broadway history: The show boasts a tantalizing trio of iconic smashes with "All That Jazz," "Razzle Dazzle" and "Cell Block Tango," but there's not a single dud on the list of musical numbers.

And for dance fans, "Chicago" is arguably the ultimate musical theater experience. The 25th anniversary tour is directed by David Hyslop with choreography by Gregory Butler based on the original direction by Tony winner Walter Bobbie and Reinking's original Tony-winning choreography. Although it leaves out the finger snaps, it maintains the rest of Fosse's signature moves, from the sultry shoulder, hip and wrist rolls and the cheekily turned-in knees to the famous jazz hands and the canny use of chairs, walking sticks and bowler hats.

The minimalist set design by Tony winner John Lee Beatty puts the song-and-dance spectacle right up front: The stage is dominated by a multi-tiered riser showcasing the sizzling jazz orchestra under the direction of Cameron Blake Kinnear, who frequently interacts with the actors and mugs for the crowd.

The skilled and athletic ensemble clearly was assembled with a focus on making sure the dance sequences dazzle, with plenty of dizzying spins, high kicks and jaw-dropping lifts that often had the audience for the April 10 OKC performance audibly oohing and ahhing.

There were moments that it seemed like the show had sacrified vocal power in favor of dance prowess: The singers were occasionally drowned out by the musicians on challenging yet crowd-pleasing numbers like "Cell Block Tango" and "All That Jazz." But their dynamite dancing made it seem like a worthwhile trade-off.

Brown possessed both the skills and the style to wow on the tricky dance-centric number "When Velma Takes the Stand," but she and Kirven also delivered a duet on "Class" that was both vocally pleasing and ripe with irony. Quiles' turn as Roxie's sad-sack spouse never failed to provoke sympathy, especially on his stellar white-gloved rendition of Amos' ode "Mister Cellophane."

A graduate of OCU's Ann Lacy School of American Dance and Entertainment, Frieden proved she is a triple-threat in the making, delivering sharp dance moves, expressive acting and stalwart vocals on her big numbers "Roxie" and "Me and My Baby." She and Sullivan practically stopped the show with their excellent teamwork on "We Both Reached for the Gun," as Billy literally controls Roxie like a ventriloquist with a dummy during a pivotal press conference.

Starring Renée Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Richard Gere, Rob Marshall's Oscar-winning 2002 film adaptation helped popularize "Chicago" and its songs. But for most musical theater fans (myself included), it's practically impossible for a movie to beat the energy of a live performance, especially when it comes to a show as razzle-dazzle as "Chicago."
