Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Corby 29 makes its mark at Skandia Cowes Week

Yachting World

  • August 3, 2005

Could the new Corby 29 become the big production fleet of the Solent? Adam Gosling says "Yes!"

There may only be four new Corby 29s sailing in the UK but if the current form of Adam Gosling’s brand-new boatYes!is anything to go by, with three straight wins at Skandia Cowes Week, this new production yacht could be set to make a big impact on one-design fleet racing on the Solent.

Three wins in a row here at Skandia Cowes Week are not bad for a boat that was launched just over a month ago. Gosling – ex-Etchells World Champion – and his crew aboardYes!have taken Class 5 IRC by storm and if they retain their sparkling form for the rest of the week they’ll be going home with one of the biggest hauls of silverware.

Gosling, who’s had a string of yachts namedYes!including an Etchells, First Class Europe and a Swan 651 has decided to downsize and go for the new Corby-designed Corby 29. Built as a production yacht in Gdansk, Poland as a cruiser racer, the Corby 29 has certainly struck a note with Team Yes! who were more than happy with their third win in a row yesterday. Chatting to a jubilant Gosling after the race about why he chose this new design he said: “I think she’s the perfect Solent size racing yacht, although you could argue she’s a bit small. We mustn’t forget that it wasn’t that long ago that 30ft yachts were pretty much the normal size in the Solent. I think what’s happened is that boats have just got larger and larger and the Solent hasn’t got any bigger and I think if you’re racing the 50ft type size of boat the Solent is actually too small a place. A fleet of these boats would be fabulous in the Solent, an absolute perfect size.”

Since her launch in JuneYes!has made a real impact on the racing scene winning her class and division in the recent Round the Island Race, and winning the two-handed Round the Island Race with John Corby. The fun event in lots of breeze was the IRC nationals where it topped 30kts. “This was quite interesting added Gosling, “because this was our first event and we really didn’t know what she was like to sail. As it’s turned out she’s one of the most enjoyable boats I’ve steered for a long time. She’s very nicely balanced, and a joy to sail in anything. Downwind in 25kts she’s a bit of a handful. She’s a classic style of IRC small boat that needs to be quite heavy so it doesn’t really plane.”

Her current form with three wins so far indicates the boat is well set up and sailed well by a team of seven expert sailors including Gosling on the helm “Most of the team I’ve sailed with for many years,” added Gosling, “including Andy Clark on the bow, Stig on mast, Rhidian Bridge on halyards, Ben Field and Boris Marlow on trim and David Howlett [professional sailor] on main and tactics.”

With a string of top sailors on board and the likes of Howlett calling the shots it’s not particularly surprising to find Team Yes! dominating the field in Class 5. “We’ve been going well this week, we’ve been lucky with some good breaks but there are few boats we need to keep an eye on including a couple of Bavaria Match 35s, a Figaro and two Sunfast 35s. We’re by far the smallest boat in our fleet but conditions have suited us so far.”

Corby Spirit of Tradition, SPIRIT OF JOYRIDE

Corby / Symon Wood & Sons, Corby Spirit of Tradition Built 1991 / POA

Corby SoT, SPIRIT OF JOYRIDE 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

This really is something different; re-creation, recycling, or just a great idea are thoughts that spun around in my head when I first saw this yacht. Based upon a light displacement yacht that started life as JOYRIDE and was built by John Corby, this yacht has been seriously refitted and is ready to go for the next owner.

Originally, the yacht was built to go under a spare Ultra 30 rig; the hull has now been modified to go under a new rig and is beautifully recrafted to fit in with the most glamorous of the classic world, albeit with a sting in her tail.

http://www.corby-yachts.com/joyride.html

Twin rudders, bulb keel, large bowsprit, and light displacement give her a superb turn of speed; planing, easily managed, fast, and fun are her real USP. A brilliant local regatta yacht, evening racing, Round the Island, etc., she will just fill the yacht with smiles.

An interesting USP of the yacht is that she could be entered into the Spirit of Tradition class at classic events due to her incorporation of several milestones in the history of yacht design: a bulb keel (1881), twin rudders (1903), skimming dish hull (1890s), and wood construction. She would certainly be one of the first of her kind!

SPIRIT OF JOYRIDE is a wonderful recreation of an already superb and fun yacht and offers all the hallmarks for an entry into the Spirit of Tradition classic events all over the world. She is an essentially new yacht and stored under cover, ready for the next owner to enjoy her to her full potential.

Unfortunately, she will not be used by the current owner due to relocation to the southern hemisphere, so proposals are very welcome to be discussed.

Owner’s Comments

The concept/vision behind producing a Spirit of Tradition yacht incorporates many features considered modern by many but actually first appearing over 100 years ago.

From his drawing board some 30 years ago, JOYRIDE was successful designer John Corby’s first yacht – a ULDB. Handcrafted in wood, she was built in Cowes, home for over a century of some of the world’s leading boat builders. Built then and now restored/reconfigured as a Spirit of Tradition yacht, in a time-honored way to combine performance with beauty.

Indeed, from her curved clipper bow, past her deeply varnished sleek contoured Edwardian coach roof to her diagonally grained varnished transom, SPIRIT OF JOYRIDE is an exemplar of a bygone era.

Seeing SPIRIT OF JOYRIDE for the first time, as she emerged from her 2-year, 1400-hour refit program, a knowledgeable yachtsman was heard to remark – ‘If Riva built sailing yachts – this is what one should look like.’

SPIRIT OF JOYRIDE truly reflects the ethos of ‘tradition’ by handing down the heritage and ingenuity of yacht designers of the past. Her skimming dish hull owes much to designers such as Charles Sibbick of Cowes, famous for his raters from the 1890s.

Bulb and strut keel first conceived by ex-US Civil War Colonel Israel Garrard in 1881 and granted a patent in 1885. Twin rudders, first seen on GH Duggans Thorella II in the 1903 Seawanhaka Cup between the US & Canada (the oldest yachting trophy originating in the United States still in active competition).

Clipper bow – in 1875, used in the design of JULLANAR to make use of the measurement of L (length) under the rule of the time to gain more boat for rating. Many of these innovative features disappeared from yacht design as a result of overzealous penalizing by rule makers & handicappers or guardians as they increasingly saw themselves, mistakenly believing their role was to protect the ‘existing fleet.’

Radical innovation could not be part of the equation – multiple rudders (called movable appendages) were among the first to go, along with wide beam, light displacement, and just about anything else that deviated from the accepted and now traditional norm, either banned outright or taxed out of profitable use by rating – radical innovation was stifled.

Now over a hundred years later, the ideas pioneered by designers such as Sibbick, Soper, Linton Hope, GL Watson, and Nat Herreshoff reign supreme. They may be mistakenly considered ‘modern’ by those unaware of yachting history, but they were all thought of a long time ago.

As Confucius said, ‘To divine the future – first you must know the past.’

The Kepler site is adjacent to the 316-acre Afton Township Forest Preserve, DeKalb County’s largest and home to a historical marker celebrating the site’s creation as part of the U.S. Bicentennial in 1976.

Organizers recommend a start no later than noon and for participants to allow between 30-45 minutes per site.

The 2022 tour centered around Hinckley, while the 2021 focus was on the Sandwich area.  The first tour was in 2014 and has been scheduled yearly except for 2020 with a hiatus due to COVID-19.

The barn tour reflects the continuing importance of agriculture in DeKalb County, even as Chicago’s western suburbs may be slowly encroaching.

With some of the richest soil in the Midwest, the DeKalb County Farm Bureau estimates there are 2,300 farms in the county with 370,772 acres of land used for growing crops.

The majority of sites are family owned and operated by generations of farmers. In DeKalb County there are about 870 farmers and 2,665 farmland owners.

Field corn has been the county’s top crop for more than a century with around 215,000 acres planted yearly for corn, according to the Farm Bureau.

Advance registration is requested, but day-of event tickets may be available.
