BabyBjorn’s travel crib is the lightest travel crib I’ve used, by far. Is it also the best travel crib for its price? My review details my experience and thoughts!

After going on a few trips with a Graco Pack ‘n Play travel crib that we got as a hand-me-down, I was a feeling a bit let down by the stress of it. After all, the ubiquitous Pack ‘n Play crib is heavy, bulky, hard to carry and not outrageously attractive.

I learned that there were other better travel cribs out there, and I was excited to try the BabyBjorn Travel Crib as one that we’d be excited to use during trips. Even someone like me can fold it up and unfold it again, without much of an instructional manual.

In this review, I’ll detail how BabyBjorn’s travel crib is working out for us, from folding it up into its carrying case to how we even used it as a play pen for several months. Read on, to see my experience with this lightweight crib.

BabyBjorn generously gifted us the Travel Crib Light ; however, this review is not sponsored and all photos and opinions are authentically my own.

Summary of the Travel Crib Light

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is one of two BabyBjorn baby products for sleep. It’s specifically for travel, as it folds up to the size of a “large briefcase,” as I’ve described it. Having a travel crib that your child is used to may be a safer alternative to a hotel crib, if you’re looking for tips for staying in a hotel with a baby .

What’s nice about how it folds up is that it’s slim, so you could put it flat on top of luggage in a trunk. I’d actually say that’s why it’s a great pick for road trips with a child who is past the “bassinet stage” and up to age 3 (if they fit).

The travel crib is different from the traditional Pack ‘n Play because the mattress is much closer to the floor, suspended by a mesh enclosure. You’re able to see the child from all angles, with no blocked areas.

Overall, it’s a minimalist design, with angles toward the bottom, and slim poles. There is soft padding over the top edges, so there’s nothing sharp or hard for toddlers who are able to stand up in the crib. Also, there’s no upper weight limit! The “able to climb out of it” is the designated time to stop using this travel crib.

Remember: the Travel Crib Light is NOT suitable for toddlers or children who are able to climb out of it on their own, and should also not be used in place of a bassinet for newborns.

Features of the Travel Crib Light

I’ll name a few of the features of the Travel Crib Light that we’ve enjoyed while our daughter has been in it.

Weight and dimensions

When assembled, the Travel Crib Light measures 32 x 44 x 24 in. It’s not an overbearing size, and I think that’s something worth noting. We kept ours in our living room for months, as a play pen.

As for weight, the entire travel crib weighs 13 pounds including the carrying case. As it’s the lightest travel crib we own, it’s what made me feel comfortable asking my mom to carry it by herself to the car from my apartment (which is a bit of a walk to the parking lot).

The fact that the travel crib folds down so slimly overall makes it a less overwhelming item to bring over to a family member or friend’s house, for a child’s nap time or night sleep. Showing up at the door with the hefty Pack ‘n Play feels more burdensome to me.

Foldability and packability

To fold up the Travel Crib Light , I first remove the mattress, and fold it in half. This is what gives the Travel Crib Light its shape when it’s in its carrying case.

Then, I unhook and fold each pole using the arrow symbol as the way in which it should fold down. With the four poles folded toward the center, it’s then possible to fold the entire crib frame in half. With the frame nestled in the center of the mattress fold in the carrying case, all you have to do is zip it up for taking on the go.

Included items

What’s included in buying the Travel Crib Light is the carrying case, mattress and entire crib frame, as well as a fitted sheet. You can also get an extra sheet as an add-on.

Machine washable

The crib fabric is removable and able to be washed in a regular washing machine. This is great because especially when being used as a play pen, like we’ve used ours, you never know what can happen.

Safety standards

The Travel Crib Light upholds both the EN 716 (standard child sleep safety in domestic environments) safety standard as well as requirements for national fire safety.

Comparing the Travel Crib Light to the Graco Pack ‘n Play

The biggest comparable factor between the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light and the Graco Pack ‘n Play is the weight and shape. When we were packing and getting ready to take a road trip the Upstate NY, Dan told me to not even try to lift our Pack ‘n Play, because it was going to be too heavy for me.

He was right! That thing is like a rock.

Dan carried the Pack ‘n Play down to the car so that I didn’t have to (this was before we had the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light). That is because it weighs almost 19 lbs, and folds down to a bulky size.

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light folds down to 6 pounds less, and you can feel that difference. The shape into which the Travel Crib Light folds is manageable and carry-able. I have no problem lifting it with one hand.

The Pack ‘n Play is also pretty long and awkward when it goes into our trunk. The BabyBjorn crib is a much more manageable size when folded.

(Here’s a photo of our Pack ‘n Play, assembled at an Airbnb, before we got the BabyBjorn Crib)

Graco Pack n Play assembled on a hard wood floor

Comparing the Travel Crib Light to the Guava Travel Crib

More interestingly, the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light and the Guava Lotus Travel Crib are worth comparing because they are both mesh travel cribs that have the mattresses on the ground. The designs are similar. The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light happens to weigh slightly less than the Guava Crib, which weighs 15 lbs.

Baby Bjorn travel crib feet on a hard wood floor

In comparing price, the Guava Lotus is less expensive and sometimes, it goes on sale. The Lotus folds down into a different shape, though, which is interesting. While the BabyBjorn Travel Crib folds down into the taller and flatter shape, the Lotus folds down into a compact long cube, and becomes a backpack for wearing while walking through the airport.

Both have that minimalist design through the slanted poles and the mesh crib body. Both fold down simply and are quite unassuming as pieces of luggage to take while you’re traveling with your baby.

I think the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is better for road trips if you often have a full trunk, due to how it’s a pretty flat item. The Guava Lotus may be better for how to fly with a baby .

Here’s a photo of our Guava travel crib in its case. To see our thoughts on the Guava crib, check out my Guava Lotus Travel Crib review .

Is it worth the price?

I think that for a lightweight machine-washable travel crib, what you’re paying for with the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is that it’s a thoughtful manageable shape and size for so many parents. The price reflects the lengths that BabyBjorn has gone through to get this crib down to 13 lbs. and into a slim carrying case with a simple fold-out method.

If you plan to have several children and use this crib for lots of travel, I’d say the decision is quite simple. Of course, if you don’t travel too often and the crib will get limited use, maybe try to borrow one from friends or family.

Also, if you’d like to do what we did, and use the Travel Crib Light as a “play pen” at home, try that! It’s easily foldable to remove from your living room or family room when you have company, so it’s like a temporary solution for containing a baby who’s sitting, but not yet crawling.

Where to buy the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light

While this crib is not carried everywhere, I’ve found it at these 4 retailers, including BabyBjorn.com (recommended).

  • BabyBjorn.com : Buying on BabyBjorn’s website will get you free shipping. The item will ship in 1-2 days! Buying here also lets you bundle with the sheet, which may not be possible at other retailers below. (Also, all 3 colors are available!)
  • Amazon (only black and silver colors are available)
  • Target (only silver color is available)
  • PotteryBarn Kids (only black and silver colors are available)

Tips for getting the most out of your BabyBjorn Travel Crib

Here are a few more nice-to-know things about this baby product for travel.

Flying with the BabyBjorn Crib

Due to the size when folded up in the case, the BabyBjorn Travel Crib (typically) can’t be carried on as a carry-on item for a flight. It’ll have to be checked as luggage upon check-in at baggage drop. The good news is that the mattress itself creates protection around the poles, so that acts as padding in-flight.

Update: some parents reported having success in getting the Travel Crib Light into an overhead compartment, but unless you’re traveling on a large plane with very spacious overhead bins, I wouldn’t bank on this.

Take it around a room or through the house

Something that’s different is that the Graco Pack ‘n Play is much bulkier to move around once it’s folded up. Because the BabyBjorn Crib is so light, you can easily pick it up and move it around the house without collapsing it.

This is less possible and more of a chore with a Pack ‘n Play. Just ask my mom, who has had to move the one at her house from room to room when my niece and our child are visiting at the same time!

Figuring out the fold-up process

Many parents find that the entire crib is pretty snug when you put it into the transport case. After packing it a few times, we got more comfortable with the process. To be fair, we’ve needed a few times of practice with both the Pack ‘n Play and the Guava Lotus Crib as well, before getting the hang of it.

Cleaning the BabyBjorn Travel Crib

Accidents happen, so is this crib washable? The mesh siding and mattress cover are removable and machine washable for cleaning, which helps. The poles could be wiped clean with child-safe cleaning products.

The mattress cover can be washed on a hot setting. Remember to wash the sheet (on “warm”) before use!

Getting replacement parts

If you lose or damage the main parts of the Travel Crib Light , you can buy replacement parts at BabyBjorn.com like the mattress , an extra fitted sheet and the entire transport bag .

What is the BabyBjorn brand?

BabyBjorn is a brand I was first introduced to with my use of the BabyBjorn Baby Carrier Mini , which Dan and I both used when our baby was a newborn. We liked the relative ease of use of the carrier, and versatility that it was a product for both moms and dads, and everyone in between. It let us tote our infant around Litchfield, Connecticut , and the Catskill Mountains , during weekends away.

From months 1-6, we also made great use of our BabyBjorn baby bouncer , which seemed to be a #1 pick among all our “parent friends.” This bouncer is so well-made and popular, it became a great product to plop our baby into when we’d visit friends’ houses. We’ve even considered taking it on road trips with a baby (but didn’t quite have the trunk space for it).

As we learned more about the brand, we saw BabyBjorn’s other baby carriers , products for sleep , kitchen items like feeding sets and potties for the bathroom . We’re about to read BabyBjorn’s blog about travel with a baby and see that other couples just like us are learning the ropes about how to leave home with a little one.

What we like about BabyBjorn products is that there aren’t too many of them . That’s right: the brand focuses on bestsellers and parent favorites in a few categories, and doesn’t have an overwhelming amount of products to make you second-guess your choices when checking out your cart.

The price for this option is high compared to most of the competition. While this might make the Bjorn a no-go for tighter budgets, we think it's an excellent choice if your budget allows it. The Baby Joy Travel Crib 2-1 Playpen is a similarly styled and shaped travel crib that might be a good fit if your budget is smaller or you only need it infrequently. The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is a quality option that feels sturdy using high-quality materials.

While this option isn't as high quality as the BabyBjorn Travel Crib , it does come close and is just as comfortable for your baby sporting a wallet-friendly price. If a budget-friendlier price and straightforward hands-free bag (woohoo!) are priorities for you, then the Lotus should make your short list of considerations. Often, the Lotus can still sport a price tag that isn't best for the tightest budget; if this describes your situation, the Baby Joy Travel Crib 2-1 Playpen has a similar shape and design and could be a good stand-in substitute.

This crib may have potential eco-health concerns as we aren't sure about the exact materials and can't find information about the contents on the product or on the Internet. If eco-health or comfort are your main goals, and your budget can stretch, both the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light and the Lotus are better and more transparent in their materials. The pad isn't as comfortable as some competitors as the foam pad compresses easily, and little ones are hitting the plastic board quickly. However, despite these imperfections, we think this option is similar to higher quality, more expensive choices and will give your little one their own sleep space no matter where the road takes you for a price most families can afford.

This play yard potentially uses flame retardants (they don't say, and we couldn't find out). It is also heavier and larger than most top competitors, making it a no-go if your space is limited or you have difficulty lifting heavy things. Despite this, it is a good choice for families with a tight budget who long for a multi-use option with above-average performance. If you don't need a multi-purpose product but still want to save some money, the Baby Joy Travel Crib 2-1 Playpen is a good choice for occasional use. It may not be suitable for a play yard, but there is no need to pay for something you don't want. If you must have a travel crib or play yard, and a bassinet wouldn't hurt, this Graco is tough to beat for value over the product's lifespan.

How We Test Travel Crib

We purchased and tested each travel crib in this review with side-by-side comparison of competitors. This testing process provides detailed insight, as we are uniquely positioned to determine which products outperform the competition with the most valuable features and functions. Unlike a review of a single product with no comparisons, we include the details on why some options stand out and have features that can make your travel more manageable. Each travel crib is tested for ease of use, portability, comfort, quality, and eco-health. We conduct over 15 individual tests on each option to assign scores and determine rank and award winners. Testing exposes the details you need to find the right travel option for your family and wallet. Award-winning cribs for travel should be easy to set up and fold into their travel bags. They are lightweight, relatively compact, and easy to carry or fit in smaller spaces, so you can quickly stow them on public transportation or in crowded trunk spaces.

How to Choose a Travel Crib

Choosing a travel crib is easy if you keep a few key things in mind. With a few considerations in mind, we think you can find the right options for your needs and baby.

Is it portable enough?

If you plan to travel with this crib, it is important to consider how portable it really is. Considering the folded product's size, shape, and weight is important to determine how well it will travel. Depending on your use, you will likely want a different travel option. Taking it across town in your trunk to grandma's house might allow you to choose a bigger option. While plane travel, fitting it in an overhead bin or carrying it through the airport might necessitate a smaller or more lightweight choice.

Setup can be a big deal. There is a big difference between a quick setup option and an involved process that is frustrating to complete. By the time you reach your destination and need to set up the crib, you often have a tired and perhaps crabby little one who needs a sleep session. Setting up your crib quickly is key, and we prefer those you can set up with speed.

Last, choosing an option that fits within your budget can be important. There were several value options in this lineup, and we think most families will not need to compromise, even if price is a factor in choosing which to buy.

Analysis and Test Results

We rigorously tested popular portable cribs, including in-house lab testing and real-world use, to determine their most essential features and which cribs offer the best performance .

Because a travel crib isn't essential for baby gear, the cost may be more of a consideration than it might be on a critical gear item. Luckily, some options perform well and sport reasonable prices, or the higher-quality (more expensive) options can be used for more than one child, thereby dispersing the price over a longer lifespan. The Graco On-The-Go Pack N Play is a versatile travel crib that works as a playpen and infant bassinet. Multiple functions build a value that goes beyond its low price, making it a versatile mainstay for many families. The Baby Joy Playpen is a higher-ranking option with a reasonable price that gives parents an easy-to-use crib that is lightweight and sets up in around a minute, which is perfect for when you reach your destination after a long day of travel. The Lotus Travel Crib is more expensive. Still, the quality is evident, and the crib can also be used as a smaller playpen and bassinet, extending its useful lifetime.

Ease of Use

Testing ease of use for portable cribs includes setting up, folding, and fitting them in the travel bag. We did not test the accessories for these products, as these varied widely and were not comparable, but depending on what they are, you may want to take a closer look at them and how they might meet your needs.

Setup time for these varies significantly between 1 minute to over 27 minutes for the initial setup. Setup time decreases considerably with practice, but the harder cribs remain challenging because they have more steps or assembly. While practice can make perfect (or at least quicker), you can't change a convoluted process into a simple one, no matter how many times you practice.

Setting up the BabyBjorn includes locking the legs in place and it...

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light earns a high score for ease of use with an average setup of 1:37 minutes after multiple tests. This option requires unfolding, locking the legs (above left), and securing the mattress (above right). This short turnaround time means you can have a sleeping baby resting peacefully quickly after a day of travel. The Baby Joy also has a quick setup of 1 minute on average once you know what you are doing. The Phil and Teds Traveller, on the other hand, earns the lowest score . This crib takes an average of 8:34 minutes to set up, even after significant practice. The Traveller requires complete assembly and dismantling every time you use it. It comes with more parts than the competition, and your baby could be wide awake and crabby by the time you assemble it. This time seems excessive to us. Most of the competition is closer to 2 minutes, as the Graco Pack 'n Play On the Go takes an average of 1:47 minutes, and the Lotus Travel Crib requires 2:13 minutes.

travel crib - the phil and teds traveller requires complete assembly each time you...

We also test the ease of folding and fitting the cribs into their included travel bags. This experience varies between easy and unbelievably frustrating. The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light is easy to open and close and is the easiest to fit in its travel bag, thanks to its smaller size and a well-designed bag that includes some wiggle room (why don't they all do this?). Alternatively, the Lotus Travel Crib is easy to set up but a struggle to fold and fit into the bag (why can't they make the bag a wee bit bigger?). Sometimes, we failed to squeeze the Lotus into the bag and had to open and refold it to fit it in the bag, which felt like a design flaw to us. The Phil and Teds Traveller is the hardest to open, close and fit into the bag. The crib parts need to be precisely arranged in the bag to ensure everything fits since it doesn't fold like the competition; if you get it wrong, you'll have to take everything out of the bag to try again.

travel crib - the lotus travel crib is the only product we tested that offered a...

Portability

The primary use for travel cribs is to provide a safe sleep location for your baby when you are away from home. If a crib is too heavy to lift and carry or too large to stow in small spaces, it could be a stress creator instead of helpful gear. For this reason, we think portability is one of the essential features of travel cribs. The smaller and lighter a crib, generally speaking, the better.

Your fitness level or the kind of travel you plan to do could make this metric feel less critical to you. A more substantial option might work if you are a bodybuilder with an SUV driving to your destination. If you are a petite person who is traveling alone on a plane, the size and weight and how easy it is to stow might override most other considerations.

travel crib - the phil and teds traveller is very small and super easy to carry...

The Phil and Teds Traveller is the lightest product in this review, with an in-bag weight of 7.4 lbs. It is also the smallest when folded/dismantled, measuring 6.5"H x 27.2"L x 8.8"W. However, it didn't score well in other metrics, and the setup time of over 8 minutes may negate the small size and lighter weight. Of course, if you're packing this crib for a longer distance, you may find the arduous setup acceptable to have a lighter weight.

On the other hand, the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light weighs 12.8 lbs, measures 19.5"H x 23.6"L x 6.6"W when folded, and scored well in every metric, earning the top overall score. Adding five extra pounds may seem like a lot, but when you consider that the Joovy Room2 weighs 26.8 lbs , it will seem feather-light in comparison. Probably a good compromise of higher performance and lightweight is the Baby Joy Playpen , 10.25 lbs, and measures 22"H x 24"L x 7"W when in the carry bag.

travel crib - this side-by-side comparison of the largest folded crib (4moms) and...

The Phil and Teds Traveller earned a high score for portability, with the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light, Baby Joy, and the Lotus Travel Crib all coming in second. The Joovy Room2 and the 4moms Breeze came in at the bottom of the pack. The 4moms Breeze is the largest folded option, measuring 12.1"H x 30.7"L x 12.2"W in the bag. This option feels more like something you'd take on a road trip, but perhaps not on an airplane.

travel crib - finding a comfortable crib is important to help ensure that your...

Given the strict safety regulations governing this type of gear, you'd think the competition would be similar in their relative comfort level. However, the materials and design of each sleeping surface vary and influence the comfort of the crib.

Most contenders have a soft mattress that ranges from dense and hard to ultra-squishy and so soft that your baby quickly hits the hard support bottom. Soft and firm are important, but squishing down to the hard base is likely a poor design.

travel crib - the phil and teds traveller has a unique self-inflating mattress...

The Phil and Teds Traveller has a unique self-inflating mattress that we struggle to inflate fully and was somewhat bowed even with the baby's weight in place. Without total inflation, the pad is uncomfortable and provides no support (think poorly inflated air mattress that results in your baby sleeping more or less on the ground). The Baby Joy has an easy-to-compress foam pad that results in the baby resting on the rigid plastic board under the foam, earning a low score for comfort.

On the other end of the spectrum, the BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light (above left) and the Lotus Travel Crib (above right) earned higher marks thanks to soft, thicker cushions with the support that didn't squash to a thin mattress under a baby's weight. It was easy to see the difference in the quality of materials and the designs that helped one crib mattress earn higher scores over another in a side-by-side comparison.

travel crib - the 4moms breeze impresses with quality materials and construction.

The quality of portable cribs varies significantly. Some products are sturdy with tightly woven mesh and durable fabric with even stitching. Other options are somewhat wobbly when we press on the top rails, and the mesh easily stretches, or it has loose threads and off-kilter stitching.

The Joovy Room2 and the 4moms Breeze earned top scores. Both cribs have sturdy frames and tight mesh with impressive attention to detail.

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light and the Lotus Travel Crib earned some of the highest scores, with higher-end materials and solid construction in simple designs that the manufacturers execute well. The less expensive Baby Joy earns an impressive above-average score for quality, making it the highest quality, budget-friendly option in the review.

In January 2014, 15 baby gear categories were found not to pose a fire safety risk and were made exempt from meeting flammability standards. This exemption means the manufacturers of these types of baby products are free to make products without harmful flame retardants. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean they all make an effort.

Flame retardant chemicals are harmful to humans. We feel that exposing little ones to these kinds of chemicals should be limited whenever feasible. Only a handful of products in this review provide information about what materials and chemicals they use (or don't) to create their portable cribs. We think transparency is essential, and parents should demand more information from companies before buying. The Center For Environmental Health (CEH) surveyed leading manufacturers of baby gear on their use of flame retardant chemicals . The CEH lists the following survey questions on its website:

The manufacturer's responses to the survey were used to rank the companies based on their efforts to remove harmful chemicals from their products. While not all manufacturers are listed, it is a good starting point for parents looking for more information on what chemicals are in their baby's gear. The list also shows which companies provide transparency and express an openness to divulge information to consumers.

The BabyBjorn Travel Crib Light and Lotus Travel Crib earned top marks for eco-health. BabyBjorn states that their product is "free from harmful substances and approved according to Oeko-Tex Standard 100 , Class 1 for baby products" they go on to say “ materials do not contain any harmful or allergenic substances. ” The Guava Family company makes the following statement about the Lotus Travel Crib, “ The Lotus Travel Crib has been thoroughly tested for chemical emissions and is certified to the GREENGUARD GOLD standard, making it the only travel crib in the world to have received this rigorous certification. ” They go on to say that the Lotus is “ … free of PVC, Lead, Phthalates, Formaldehyde, Heavy Metals (Cadmium, Arsenic, Mercury, etc.) and many others. ”

Most portable cribs in this review scored as low as you can go and failed to provide information about chemicals and flame retardants on their websites, owner's manuals, or the CEH. Luckily, except for the Graco Pack 'n Play on the Go and the Baby Joy Playpen , most of our award-winning products are free from harmful chemicals and impressed during testing of other metrics, earning the top two overall scores.

BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light vs. Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib: Which Is Better?

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Learn more .

Verywell / Jaclyn Mastropasqua

When it comes to travel cribs, the  BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light  and the  Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib  are both popular models. They are both lightweight  pack and plays  (also known as playards) that will grow with your little one from the newborn stage through toddlerhood, and at first glance, they seem pretty similar.

Our team of editors and parents tested 11 travel cribs in our  Verywell Testing Lab  in New York City  and  in the real world, using them at home and on the go. In this test, we evaluated the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light and the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib for ease of assembly, compactness, design, and care. Both travel cribs have different strengths, making them great picks for families with varying wants and needs, but one travel crib stood out more.

Care and cleaning, frequently asked questions, why trust verywell family, babybjörn travel crib light vs. guava family lotus travel crib results.

Winner: Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib

The BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light and the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib are both top-of-the-line options for families looking for a high-quality pack and play. We liked both cribs during lab and at-home testing, naming the BabyBjörn Best for Travel and picking the Lotus Travel Crib as Best Compact in our lab test of the best pack and plays. Ultimately, both models have handy features and are lightweight, but the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib made a stronger impression with its backpack carrying bag and side zipper.

Keep reading for our in-depth comparison of the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light versus the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib.

BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light

Who It’s For: Simple yet sturdy, the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light is best suited for busy families that prioritize saving time. Assembling and collapsing this pack and play is quick and easy, and the fabric can effectively be spot cleaned without having to put it into the washing machine. It also fits into the included travel bag for portability.

Dimensions: 32 x 44 x 24 inches | Weight: 13 pounds | Storage bag: Yes | Wheels: No

Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib

Who It’s For: The Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib is ideal for families that are frequent fliers. In addition to being lightweight (it’s only 11 pounds), it was the only model in our pack and play test with a travel bag that can be carried as a backpack or on a shoulder. If you’re wrangling children through the airport or into the car, it’s helpful to have the option to carry the crib hands-free. Plus, it’s compact when folded for easy storage.

Dimensions: 46 x 31 x 25.5 inches | Weight: 11 pounds | Storage bag: Yes | Wheels: No

Winner: BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light

Both travel cribs were easy to assemble in well under three minutes, but the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib was trickier to collapse. To set it up, the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light simply needed to have the legs popped into place before testers sprung it open and slipped in the thin mattress. (For bedtime and naps, you should also put a crib sheet on the mattress before inserting it into the playard.) Collapsing it took just over 4.5 minutes, and we needed to refer to the manual a few times.

The Guava Family Lotus was similarly easy to assemble without a manual. We extended the aluminum legs and pulled the crib's sides open until they clicked into place. Taking down the pack and play, however, was more of a challenge. “Collapsing the legs … took a little while,” a lab tester noted, while our at-home tester added that since the folding process was not intuitive, she was repeatedly searching online tutorials. Strapping in the mattress to secure it to the crib took a while, too.

Verywell Family / Leticia Almeida

The Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib edges out the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light for compactness and portability due to its lighter weight and handy dual-use carrying bag, although both cribs are solid options in this category. Weighing just 11 pounds—or 15 pounds when in the travel bag, according to the brand—the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib is very light. It also folds to half of its size and “doesn't take up a lot of space to store,” earning it a spot as the Best Compact pick in our lab test. When it comes to portability, the folded pack and play fits into the included travel bag, which can be worn on a caregiver’s back like a backpack or on a shoulder. In testing, we found that the crib's light weight makes it easy enough to move around a room, even though it lacks wheels.

The BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light is not much heavier at 13 pounds (not including the travel bag), and we had no problem moving it around. In the lab, we did find that “the red ties on the legs catch on [the] carpet when you drag it across,” and the crib doesn’t have wheels. Like the Guava, it comes with a zippered carrying bag for toting it through the airport or storing it in a closet, though the bag doesn’t have a backpack option.

Winner:  BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light

After spot-cleaning both cribs as part of our lab test, we decided that the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light is the best in this category since it can be spot cleaned without leaving a stain. To assess how easy the pack and plays are to clean, we intentionally spilled applesauce on the fabric. Spot cleaning the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light was just a matter of wiping off the muck. For deeper cleaning, the crib’s fabric is also detachable and can be put in the washing machine. On the other hand, the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib wasn’t as easy to spot clean, with the material absorbing some of the liquid from the applesauce and cleaner, leaving a stain. Luckily, the fabric is also removable and machine washable, so it can be thoroughly cleaned, but it will take longer.

Winner:  Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib

There are a few design features on both cribs that are worth mentioning. The BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light comes in a couple of color options, while the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib is only available in one color combination. Both travel cribs come with a thin mattress included, and while some testers wished the mattresses were thicker for added comfort, the mattresses are thin and firm to comply with safe sleep guidelines. One unique feature we really appreciate in the Guava Family Lotus is the way one side of the crib unzips, helping caregivers put their babies down without hurting their backs and turning the travel crib into a play space for supervised toddlers. This zipper, plus the sleek aluminum legs, helps the Guava Family edge out the BabyBjörn to win Best Design. However, both pack and plays are solid, well-made options.

Winner: Tie

Both travel cribs are priced similarly, with the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib costing $280 and the BabyBjörn Travel Crib Light going for $280-$300, depending on the retailer. Each pack and play requires you to buy crib sheets from the brand separately. The Guava sheets cost an additional $25, while the BabyBjörn sheets are an extra $30 and can also be purchased in a bundle with the crib itself for $310. Ultimately, the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib is slightly less costly, but both models are a similar investment.

What You Can Expect to Pay

When shopping for a travel crib or playard, you can find more basic options for around $100, while models with more features can cost up to $400. Most of the best pack and plays that we recommend fall into the $100-$300 range, and we think the Guava Family Lotus Travel Crib is reasonably priced at $280. When picking the best option for your family, consider how long you will need it and how often you intend to use it, in addition to the features and capabilities that matter most to your family.

How do I get my travel crib onto a plane?

Taking a travel crib with you on a plane flight will look a little different depending on the airline you’re flying with. Some airlines require all pack and plays to be checked before going through security, which may cost an additional baggage fee. Other airlines may allow you to check it gate side for free or even take it as a carry-on if it fits the size requirements. Similarly, rules for taking strollers and car seats on planes will vary by airline, so make sure to do some research before flying with your little one (and all of their gear).
