With a backdrop of stunning peaks, this lovely town is a must-visit in Colorado, especially since it’s less than 2 hours from Denver.

The list of things to do in Leadville, CO is long, from summiting the highest 14er in the state to heading underground to learn about the mining history of this Gold Rush town.

I’ve lived in Colorado for almost 15 years, and Leadville is one of my favorite places to visit. It’s close to Denver but has that true mountain town vibe.

So if you’re looking to travel like a local, not a tourist, then I’ve got everything you need to know about things to do in Leadville, CO in this post.

From hiking to history to skiing to shopping, Leadville is one of the best weekend getaways from Denver , since it’s just under 2 hours away.

What is Leadville Known For?

Leadville is famous for being the highest incorporated city in North America at 10,152 feet, so be prepared to adjust to the altitude if you’re coming from sea level.

Leadville also has a history of mining from the Gold Rush era, which you can still see vestiges of around town.

Is Leadville a Fun Town?

Leadville is quirky, cool, and full of fun for everyone. The town itself is cute with several bars, restaurants, and shops to hang out in.

Plus, Leadville is a great jumping-off point for lots of outdoor adventures. Honestly, Leadville is truly at the top of the long list of best mountain towns in Colorado .

The Best Things to Do in Leadville in Summer

Summer is an awesome time to explore the things to do in Leadville, CO – especially the hiking trails and water activities at nearby lakes.

1. Summit Mt. Elbert

While Colorado has over 50 14ers (peaks above 14,000 feet), Mt. Elbert is the tallest of them all at 10,440 feet, and second only to Mt. Whitney in the contiguous US. It’s also surprisingly one of the easiest 14ers – Class 1 the whole way – so it’s one of the best Colorado 14ers in terms of bang for your buck!

The trailhead is only about 10 miles from Leadville, so you can easily stay in town and still get an alpine start.

2. Hike Mount Massive

You can also bag the second-highest summit in Colorado at 14,421 feet by hiking to the top of Mount Massive.

This peak actually has the most area above 14,000 feet in the lower 48 states, with a 3-mile-long summit ridge.

3. Splash Around in Twin Lakes

Nearby Twin Lakes is the place to be if you want some summer fun on or in the water.

Stand-up paddleboarding is one of the most fun Leadville things to do in the summer, and Twin Lakes SUP & Cycle provides rentals so you make a splash on Twin Lakes.

4. Stop & Smell the Wildflowers on the Mayflower Gulch Trail

Technically this hike isn’t very close to Leadville. In fact, it’s much closer to Copper Mountain. However since most people will make their way to Leadville via the pass (Freemont Pass) and it appears on a few other lists, I’ve got it on here in case you want to add it to your trip to Leadville.

But if you’re short on time and you live in Colorado, I’d skip this outing and save it for a fun-filled half day in the mountains.

One of the best hikes in Colorado is Mayflower Gulch , which is just a short drive from Leadville.

The relatively easy trail leads you to an alpine cirque, providing a stunning backdrop for fields of wildflowers in the summer.

Local tip: The main trailhead starts from a lower paved parking lot (the round trip hike is 4-5 miles), but in the summer, the gate is open to an upper parking lot accessible by 4WD vehicles (2-mile round trip hike).

5. Colorado Midland Centennial Trail

The Colorado Midland Centennial Trail is a cool hike along the tracks of what used to be the highest railroad in the world.

If you want to check out the Hagerman Tunnel, you can take the Rogers Spur to Hagerman Lake and the tunnel just beyond it.

6. Enjoy Turquoise Lake Recreation Area

Turquoise Lake is one of the best Colorado lakes and is extremely popular as a recreation destination for fishing and boating.

While there are around 300 campsites in 8 campgrounds in the area, they fill up fast in the summer, so plan ahead if you want to spend some time camping here.

Local tip: While camping is only allowed in campgrounds in the Turquoise Lake Recreation Area, there is some good free camping near Denver nearby along County Road 48.

7. Visit the Leadville National Fish Hatchery

The hatchery is open to the public, and you can take a self-guided tour to learn about the fish production process.

You’ve probably seen the famous “Melly” on outdoor enthusiasts all over Colorado, even if you didn’t know it at the time.

This fleece hoody is only officially available at the shop in downtown Leadville where they’re made in limited supply, so a stop in Leadville is not complete without a stop at Melanzana.

Local tip: Due to the incredible popularity, appointments – available on the Melanzana website – are required to visit the shop.

17. Sip a Drink at the Silver Dollar Saloon

The old west is alive and well in the Silver Dollar Saloon, which was originally established in 1879. Step inside for a blast from the past and enjoy a beer, whiskey, or a full meal.

Mount Elbert is the tallest peak in Colorado and the second-highest in the contiguous United States.

The trailhead is located on Halfmoon Road, just outside the city of Leadville.

There are two common routes to the summit: the North (Main) Trail and the South Trail.

The North (Main) Trail is a 9.5-mile round-trip journey that starts in a lush forest before breaking above the tree line to a challenging ascent of the peak.

The South Trail is a 11.5-mile round-trip hike that provides its own set of unique views and challenges.

Both trails are rated as difficult due to the steep incline and high altitude.

Take note to start your hike early in the day to avoid afternoon thunderstorms, bring plenty of water, and take your time to acclimatize to the high altitudes.

Camp on the shores of Turquoise Lake

Turquoise Lake, just west of Leadville, is a stunning lake known for its crystal clear waters and mountain views.

Surrounded by towering peaks and verdant forests, the lake is a popular spot for fishing, boating, and hiking along its shoreline trails.

The lake is stocked with a variety of fish species, making it a favorite amongst anglers.

You can rent a kayak or canoe and paddle around the lake, taking in the magnificent mountain scenery and watching for wildlife along the shores.

There are also several hiking trails surrounding the lake.

Camping at Turquoise Lake is a truly special experience.

There are eight campgrounds with over 300 individual sites to choose from, each offering a unique vantage point of the lake and mountains.

Many of these sites provide direct access to the lake and the surrounding trails.

The campgrounds are equipped with basic amenities such as picnic tables, fire grills, and vault toilets.

Be sure to reserve your spot early during peak season, as the campsites fill up quickly.

Drive the Top of the Rockies National Scenic Byway

The Top of the Rockies National Scenic Byway is one of the most popular scenic drives in Colorado.

It is one of our favorite mountain driving experiences.

The road stretches for over 75 miles and goes over three mountain passes that exceed an altitude of 10,000 feet.

On the drive, you can enjoy panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, vast alpine meadows, and sparkling turquoise lakes.

You’ll come across historic mining towns and the Continental Divide, which offers stunning vistas in every direction.

It’s a perfect destination for photographers and nature enthusiasts.

Please note that due to its high altitude, it’s advisable to check road conditions before embarking on this journey to avoid possible road closures due to snow.

Leadville and twin lakes: 20 fun things to do this summer.

With an average of 310 days of sunshine a year, historic silver mining boomtowns, the state’s highest peaks, and abundant public lands, the mountain destinations of Leadville and Twin Lakes feature countless opportunities for high-country fun this summer. Travelers can experience something new this season, whether visiting for the first time or returning to a favorite spot, as new offerings have opened since last summer. Visitors are sure to get a warm welcome from these new businesses.

Fun Things to Do in Leadville, Colorado

Hiking: The Colorado Trail and Continental Divide Trail give you easy access to day hikes from camp or overnight backpacking adventures. Boating. With some of Colorado’s largest glacial lakes, Lake County is aptly named. Boat and fish on the shimmering blue waters of Twin Lakes and Turquoise Lake; take a canoe, kayak or boat tour or bring your own. Discover the ghost resort of Interlaken, once a summer haven for the wealthy and now a fascinating collection of turn-of-the-century buildings, via a special boat tour.

  SUP and Cycle: Active adventurers can rent stand-up paddleboards and mountain bikes, in the heart of Twin Lakes village, and explore Colorado’s majestic high country and large sparkling lakes. Located at the base of Mt. Elbert, SUP and Cycle also rents bike racks and provides guests with extended rental times and superb customer service. 

Fishing. Catch the fish you wish in Gold Medal Trout Waters. Just outside Leadville, you have easy access to some of Colorado’s best fishing, in the headwaters of the Arkansas River, known for its abundance of wild trout ranging up to 17 inches long.

Mountain Dogs Romp & Chomp : Visitors in need of doggie daycare or boarding, a dog wash, or supplies during their stay can check out this new store for dogs and the people who love them. Mountain Dogs offers a range of food, all-natural treats, and accessories.

Ahab & Absalom : This new coffee shop is already a favorite of Leadville locals. Visitors can enjoy espresso and coffee from Colorado-based Corvus Coffee Roasters, single-origin matcha tea, hand pies, pastries, book recommendations, and more.

Before & After Leadville: Visitors can sip inventive cocktails and mocktails and carefully chosen beer, wine, and coffee drinks. Before & After serves delicious light fare and scrumptious desserts, all in a historic building in the heart of downtown Leadville. It is the sister location of Treeline Kitchen, also located downtown. 

Golden Burro Cafe: Golden Burro is going through a historic restoration project and will reopen in June 2021 under new management. The Golden Burro will offer breakfast, lunch, dinner, mocktails, and cocktails. The café will feature house-made kombucha, smoothies, fresh pressed juice, goods from an authentic European pastry chef and ovo-plant-based new American diner fare. 

Two Mile Brewing: T wo Mile Brewing is Leadville’s newest brewpub and serves beers like the Leadville Lager, Camp Hale Pale Ale and seasonal brews. Its food menu features shareable plates, salads and sammies. 

Tacos La Mina: A new style of Mexican food is cooking in the space previously occupied by Gringo’s on Leadville’s north end. Visitors can savor scrumptious tacos, panchitos, burros, tortas, quesadillas, tacos dorado, hamburgers, margaritas, cervezas and more.

Leadville Wellness Center: Whether weekend warriors or elite athletes, guests can experience holistic fitness recovery at Leadville Wellness Center through acupuncture, massage, herbal consultation, and more. The Zip Line Tour

Check in at our Base Camp to explore our 2,500-acre paradise on Mount Arkansas (13,750’). The Arkansas River starts here as a tranquil stream. After being fitted with the required gear and a training zip line, enjoy a ride in our military trucks to our high mountain yurt at 11,500’. Experience a thrilling zip line ride over canyons, meadows, and streams on twin lines. Each section has two overhead cables with double attachments to the full-body harness. Our flat decks and automatic braking system ensure easy access and stress-free landings. Explore over 40 historic gold mines with professional guides. Return on the Big Nugget Zip, ending at our 100’ Sky Tower with viewing decks for photos of Mt. Massive and Mt. Elbert. Families are welcome.

The Leadville Train Ride

Meet the conductor and crew, then board the Leadville Colorado & Southern Train for a historical journey. Climb 1,000 feet through the untouched wilderness of the San Isabel National Forest, enjoying spectacular Rocky Mountain views. Learn about Leadville’s boom-town days, famous residents like Baby Doe Tabor and Molly Brown, and outlaws like Doc Holiday. Hear railroad history and ghost stories, and tour the caboose and engine. Enjoy the Leadville train ride!

WHAT TO WEAR

Long pants are recommended, closed toed shoes like hiking boots or sneakers are best. Bring sunglasses. You can carry a small back pack for bottled water or a cell phone.

• Weight restrictions apply. No one under 60 pounds and no one over 260 pounds can zip line.
• Pregnant women can not zip line

OUR LOCATION

The Historic Train Depot is located at 326 E. 7th Street, Leadville, Colorado 80461. The Zip Line Base is at 6492 Highway 91, Leadville, Co. 80461. It’s only 12 minutes from the Zip Line Base to the Train Station and vice versa.

OUR ZIP LINES

Don’t worry about braking on our course. Our braking system will slow you down for a smooth, safe stop and one of your guides will be waiting on the landing deck to assist. At least two guides will accompany all tours. Easy to access take-off and landing decks are flat on the side of the mountain; you don’t have to climb ladders up into trees or wooden towers. Zip line sections are connected by scenic downhill trails through the forest, so it’s easy walking.

We have a 48 hour cancellation policy for all tours.

Route of the Silver Kings

A Guide and and mapped route with 14 stops and 20 additional significant historic locations in the Leadville Mining District. See the location of the first discovery of gold that started it all in 1860, the location of Tabor’s 1860 mining claims, the Matchless Mine, the Wolftone Mine – site of an underground banquet in 1911, the sites of 6 towns, smelters, mines, tunnels, a historic power plant, and other significant locations in the Leadville (California) Mining District east of Leadville, Colorado.

14 Stops are marked by a metal roadside post with a small numbered yellow sign. Locations provide additional historic information about sites near each stop. Locations are not marked in the field.  The Guide describes each stop and location in detail.

The Route is 21 miles or 34 kilometers long and rises from 10,152 feet (City Hall Bench Mark) in Leadville to 11,700 feet at Stop 14; the Venir Mine site. It follows county roads that are mostly gravel/dirt surface with some pavement. They can be rough and steep in places. Please note: Local road condition advisories along the Route are denoted by a red X on the maps. Plan on a minimum of 3 hours to drive the entire route.

Note – CR -1A south of the Venir Mine, CR-6A and the Mosquito Pass road are very rough and are only passable with high ground clearance 4 wheel drive vehicles.

See the stunning alpine wildflowers at their peak, splashing the mountain world with vibrant color! Learn about the hearty flora that survives and thrives at 10,000+ ft’ and capture unbelievable photos to show off your unique finds! 

Join our experienced tour guides for a 20 minute hike through pine forests, aspen groves, and open meadows. View multiple varieties of wildflowers at the water tower. Some flowers sighted include Indian Paintbrush, Lupine and wild strawberries. You may find anything from our “local” deer to a mushroom in a wet marsh. Remember hiking shoes, sunscreen, bug spay, a water bottle and camera. The train ride will depart at 10:00 AM and arrive back at the depot at 1:00 PM. Add an additional historic experience after the railroad wildflower tour, and enjoy a catered box lunch  on the lawn of the Healy House Museum where you will have time to enjoy a stroll through the carefully curated heritage gardens. The gazebo frames the view of Colorado’s highest mountains, Mount Elbert and Mount Massive. The lawn is a good place to view Harrison Avenue and you can see why August Meyer chose the “capital hill” area for his home. Following lunch there will be a private guided tour of both the Healy House Museum and James Dexter’s cabin.

• Historic Leadville Walking Tour

Leadville, a Victorian-era mining town, was once home to 30,000 residents. In its heyday, it saloons, dance halls, and brothels. Thanks to the profiting gold and silver mines, there was also a lot of wealth, which afforded the construction of hotels, Victorian mansions, and the Tabor Opera House.

70 square blocks of Leadville’s downtown were designated a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Since then, extensive preservation efforts have put much of the town’s rich history on display. With such notable structures as the Healy House, Heritage Museum, Delaware Hotel, and Tabor Home on the route, a historic walking tour of downtown Leadville is not to be missed.

Matchless Mine – Leadville

With an extensive and scandalous history dating back to Colorado’s silver rush, Matchless Mine is a must-visit historic attraction in Leadville. Boasting mine and cabin tours, in addition to being part of the National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum, guests can take a step back in time, taking a peek into one of the state’s richest mines.

History of Leadville’s Matchless Mine

During Colorado’s silver rush in 1879, Matchless Mine was purchased by Horace A.W. Tarbor as a rags-to-riches venture. What first looked like a run-down mine soon produced an estimated $7.5 million of silver. Tabor, who was married to a savvy and successful businesswoman named August, had an affair with Elizabeth McCourt Doe known as “Baby Doe”.

People were so upset by this behavior that they publicly shamed them both. The couple was unruffled and married in 1883 in Washington, DC while Tabor was a United States senator. Flaunting their wealth, the couple had a lavish wedding with pure silver invitations, an over-the-top dress, and an elaborate party.

Due to their unbridled spending and a crash in the value of silver, the Tabor’s lost their fortune. When Tabor died in 1899, he left Elizabeth and his daughters completely bankrupt. Elizabeth worked tirelessly for over three decades to make the Leadville Mine successful again.

Unfortunately, after leasing the property and taking out loans, the mine was finally sold in 1920 to Shorego Mining Company. J.K. Mullen, the new owner, was kind enough to allow Elizabeth, who was 71 at the time, to stay in her small house on the property, where she eventually was found frozen in 1935 after dying from heart issues.

Mine and Museum Tour

In 1953, the Leadville Assembly began restoring the buildings, with Elizabeth’s cabin, the hoist house, and head frame number 6 becoming part of the museum that opened that summer. In 2000, the Leadville community added the old railroad to the Mineral Belt Trail, including a paved twelve-mile path for recreation around the city.

The National Mining Hall of Fame & Museum took over Matchless Mine in 2006 and now offers guided tours of the site all summer. During the tour of Tabor’s mine, visit Elizabeth’s cabin, the blacksmith shop, a mine shaft, and even take gold panning lessons! Tours do not enter any mine shafts, as they are far too dangerous and unstable.

At the museum, you can see crystals and geodes as well as rocks that glow in the dark. Moreover, guests can hear the stories of 250 miners’ lives in the museum’s Hall of Fame. At the end of your day, visit Miner’s Pick to buy souvenirs, rocks and minerals, clothing, stationery, art, and jewelry.

Mining in Society Merit Badge and Events

Boy Scouts have the opportunity to earn their Mining in Society merit badge while visiting the museum and mine. Scouts can learn about the mining process, safety procedures, and common metals and minerals found. Anyone working on their badge, or who has earned it already, is given free admission to the museum.

Moreover, the museum sponsors a youth art contest and holds one-time events such as movie nights, speakers, authors, award ceremonies, and special presentations throughout the year. Check their website for events that may pop up!
