Discover Funchal, Madeira in 2024: an independent travel guide

Funchal is the likeable capital city of Madeira. It is a historic and characterful city, which sits in a natural amphitheatre, with all districts facing down towards the waterfront and historic centre.

Funchal has an extensive history and an abundance of Portuguese charm, along with a wide variety of tourist attractions, including castles, gardens and cable cars.

Being the largest city on the island, it is also the centre for culture and tourism, and Funchal excels at both of these. There are world-class hotels, fascinating museums, fine restaurants along with buzzing nightlife.

Funchal may have a population over 100,000, but it has a small-town atmosphere, which is very safe and easy to explore on foot. This article will provide an introduction to Funchal, either for your holiday or as a day trip. Related articles: Introduction to Madeira – Madeira top 10 - 1 week in Madeira

An overview of Funchal for tourists

There are three areas of Funchal of interest to visitors; the historic centre and waterfront, the hilltop district of Monte, and the coastal area of São Martinho where the majority of the hotels are situated.

The historic centre includes the main shopping street of Avenida Arriaga, the Lavradores market, Tiago fort, São Lourenço fort, the Se Cathedral and the cobbled streets of the Zona Velha. This area extends around the waterfront which overlooks the harbour and cruise terminal, and is where the majority of a day trip is spent - A suggested day trip and map is provided later in this article.

Monte is situated up in the hills above the city, and has a slightly cooler and wetter microclimate. Within Monte are three wonderous gardens, a beautiful church and the thrilling wicker sledge ride down to the centre of Funchal. Monte is easily combined in a day trip with Funchal, as there is a cable car between the harbour and Monte.

São Martinho is to the west of Funchal and is centred around the pebble beach of Praia Formosa and the Lido swimming complex. This is the area where the majority of the larger-hotels are based, and is a modern district offering great tourist facilities, such as bars, shops & restaurants.

Funchal for your holiday

There are many good reasons to be based in or near Funchal for your holiday. Funchal has the widest selection of restaurants, shops and bars, along with being the hub for all public transport. Being based here means you will always feel close to the buzz of the city - there are many places on Madeira which are beautiful but do feel quite remote and distant from anything.

Funchal has the added bonus of having some of the best weather on Madeira, and has significantly less rain than the north or west, while being sheltered from the strong easterly winds.

Funchal may be a major city, but it is a very safe destination. There is almost no crime or significant issues, and is suitable for families or older visitors.

The area of Estrada Monumental (south São Martinho) has the atmosphere of a resort town, with streets packed with hotels, restaurants and tourist shops, but it is only a short bus ride to the centre of Funchal. Our opinion: When friends or family who are new to Madeira are considering it for a holiday, we always advise them to be based in or close to Funchal.

Funchal for Cruise ship passengers

Madeira is a popular stop for cruise ships, and Funchal is a beautiful city to moor at. The cruise terminal is right at the centre of the city, and the historic centre can be easily walked to from the cruise port.

Funchal can be easily explored without the need of an expensive tour organised through the cruise company, and for a complete guide for a day trip to Funchal as a cruise ship passenger, please read this guide .

A day trip to Funchal

The interactive map below shows a typical day trip to Funchal. The suggested day would be divided between the historic centre and Monte, with riding the cable car up to Monte and catching the sledge back to Funchal.

Sights of the day trip 1) Avenida Arriaga 2) Praça do Município 3) Se cathedral 4) Palácio de São Lourenço 5) Lavradores market 6) Arte Portas Abertas (along the Rua de Santa Maria) 7) Forte de São Tiago 8) Funchal-Monte cable car 9) Monte Palace Tropical Gardens 10) Jardim Botânico (optional) 11) Senhora do Monte church 12) Monte sledge ride

Advice: The sledge ride ends 2km from the centre of Funchal, and it is either a walk, bus ride (ever 30-40minutes) or expensive taxi. The taxi drivers know they can rip off tourists and will demand as high as €30 for the 10-minute ride. Uber is a much cheaper option. If you would prefer a guided tour of Funchal’s Old Town, these start from €12.90 for a 2-hour tour .

Being the largest city on Madeira means that all of the tours of the island depart from here. An organised tour is the best way to discover Madeira, and these tours provide knowledgeable guides, while removing the hassle of public transport. We have worked with GetYourGuide for the past five years and some of their best tours of Madeira include: • The best of western Madeira, full day coach tour (€29) • Best of the east of Madeira, full day coach tour (€29) • Cliff top Skywalk and Porto Moniz Volcanic Pools small group tour (€55) • Madeira Peaks tour by Open 4x4 (€49)

The gardens.

Madeira is known as the island of the eternal spring and nowhere is this more evident than in the flower gardens found in hills above Funchal.

The most famous is the Botanical Garden, which was created to protect the indigenous plants of Madeiran, and now has expanded to include over 2,500 species. Included in the complex is an exotic bird park, a small Natural History Museum and the much-photographed Jandins Coreografados. https://telefericojardimbotanico.com/room/jardim-botanico/

Rua de Santa Maria doorway art (Arte Portas Abertas)

The Rua de Santa Maria has been converted into an outdoor art gallery, with the doorways of abandoned buildings being repurposed as permanent art features.

This wonderful project has breathed new life into the area and includes over 200 works of art and murals from local artists. Further details can be found on the project's website: www. arteport asabertas .com/

Insight: This area livens up at night with some of Madeira's best tourist-focused restaurants, and there is a great atmosphere, but the waiters can be very pushy to get customers. If you purely want to see the art visit early in the morning.

The Mercado dos Lavradores

The Mercado dos Lavradores (Workers' Market) is one of the highlights of Funchal. This covered market sells fresh produce and handicrafts, along with having a bustling fish market.

Wicker Sledge from Monte

The wicker sledge ride down Monte hill, is the most touristy gimmicky activity of Madeira, but it is unique and fun. Historically the wicker sledges (known as Carreiros) transported goods from the top of Monte to the lower districts of Funchal, but since the 1910s tourists have been the main cargo!

The sledges do not follow special rails but zip down roads, with the drivers using their feet to steer, running to push over the flat sections and spotters keeping traffic safely out of the way. The Carreiros depart from the Nossa Senhora do Monte church in Monte a hillside town above Funchal.

21 Amazing Things To Do in Funchal, Madeira (Ultimate Guide)

Whether you are visiting the Portuguese island Madeira for a day or for a few weeks, Funchal is one place you definitely have to see. But what are the best things to do in Funchal ?

Funchal is Madeira’s capital city and the main town. Despite its small size and just over 100,000 inhabitants, it has a lot to offer to any kind of visitor. From historic sites, museums, and botanical gardens to a big variety of activities – you’ll find plenty of inspiration for things to see and do in Funchal.

In this article, I am sharing some of the very best places to see and things to do in Funchal . My selection starts with the most popular places that are  must see in Funchal. So if you’re on a short visit, start with the top of the list. I listed the attractions in the most logical order as you’d visit them starting in Funchal Old Town. Further down below you will also find some fun activities and lesser known things do in Funchal that are nice to see if you have more time.

Please note that this is not a guide for the whole Madeira island. It’s also not a guide for day trips from Funchal  or the beautiful areas to see close to Funchal. This is a city guide focused on the main points of interest in Funchal . Before you go on a day trip outside the city, you really should first see at least some of the main Funchal attractions. No visit to Madeira would be complete without exploring Funchal.

We spent 9 days on Madeira island and visited Funchal several times. So this article is mostly based on our own personal experience and includes some experience-based tips. However, in order to give you the most complete guide to Funchal, I also included several places that are nice to see, but for which we personally had no time.

We were in Madeira with kids and spent more time outside the city, hiking and exploring. If interested, on our blog you can find  more inspiration and tips for your trip to Madeira – take a look!

Without further ado, here is the list of best things to do in Funchal . Read on!

What to see and do in Funchal Madeira, Portugal

These are the best things to do in Funchal, Madeira:

1. Visit Funchal Cathedral – Sé

Located in the city center, The Cathedral of Funchal (Sé) is one of the main historic landmarks of Funchal. Built in the beginning of the 16th century, at the peak of the Portuguese explorers’ era, Funchal Cathedral is a symbol of power and prosperity.

Not to be missed is the Gothic altarpiece, composed of gilt woodwork, oil paintings on wood, and small sculptures. The wooden cedar ceiling with ivory elements is considered one of the most beautiful ceilings in the whole of Portugal.

Practical information:   Visit is free. The church is normally open every day from early morning until 6.30-7 pm. On weekends, it’s closed for a few hours in the afternoon.

2. Explore the Old Town of Funchal

Funchal Old Town (Zona Velha) is a nice lively place. Most of the city’s shops and restaurants are located in this area. It might get a bit busy when there are cruise ships in town, but it still has a great local feel.

The main shopping streets are Rua do Aljube, Rua da Carreira, and Rua Dr. Fernao Ornelas.

If you are looking for a place for lunch, don’t settle for tourist restaurants with pictures on the menu. There are quite some really nice local restaurants that serve great fresh food. We had lunch at Restaurante Armazém do Sal  which is supposedly very expensive, but during the day they had a very affordable lunch menu. The place was packed with locals, but we were the only tourists there.

TIP: If you want to explore the Old Town of Funchal with a local guide and learn more about the city, consider joining this highly-rated Old Funchal walking tour .

3. Admire the Street Art of Rua da Santa Maria

Rua da Santa Maria  was one of our favorite places in Funchal. It’s a perfect example of how a bit of imagination can bring the city to life. This area that has suffered from the flooding is now completely reborn.

A public art program called ‘Arte de Portas Abertas’ (the art of the open doors) has managed to transform an old shabby area of Funchal’s Old Town into a colorful outdoor art gallery. It now displays over 200 works of art, most painted on the doors of the houses of Rua de Santa Maria.

This area was really quiet when we visited Funchal in April and so I consider it one of the hidden gems of Madeira . However, it definitely has the potential to become one of the most popular places to visit in Funchal. Don’t miss it!

4. Visit Mercado dos Lavradores – Farmer’s Market

The Mercado dos Lavradores is a flower, fruit, vegetable, and fish market in Funchal. A short visit to this colorful bustling market is a must-do in Funchal!

The impressive building dates from 1940 and the inside space is organized in several different areas (‘Plazas’), connected by passages and staircases.

The market is open daily (except Sundays and Public Holidays), but is busiest on Fridays when you’ll likely see traditionally dressed ‘flower ladies’ selling the most beautiful exotic flowers.

A woman in traditional Madeira folk clothing selling exotic flowers at Mercado dos Lavradores market in Funchal

Beware that the prices at the market are quite high, especially for fruit. On the other hand, you can try fruit you’ve probably never seen before.

We tried several kinds of passion fruit (banana passion fruit was our favorite), a fruit called ‘nespra’, and several others I don’t remember the name of.

We loved this explosion of smells, tastes, and colors and strongly recommend you visit this farmer’s market when in Funchal. Cover your nose and take a peek at the fish market section as well!

5. Enjoy the Views from Monte Cable Car

Visiting Monte has been probably the most popular Funchal attraction for many decades. At the beginning of the 20th century, tourists could reach the mountain by steam train. Nowadays, you can make the same journey and enjoy the scenery from  Monte Cable Car (Teleférico do Funchal).

The ride from Funchal old town to Monte takes 15-20 minutes one way, giving you plenty of time to enjoy beautiful views of the city and its surroundings. It covers a long distance (over 3,2km (2 miles)) and makes an impressive ascent of 580 m (1,902 ft).

Once in Monte, you have several options. If you have at least half a day, you can visit all of the places mentioned here, otherwise, you’ll have to choose. A popular option is to take the second cable car and visit the Botanical Gardens of Madeira. Alternatively, just next to the cable car station, you can visit the Monte Palace Tropical Garden.

A bit further down the road, you’ll find the church of Our Lady of Monte. From there you can take a wicker toboggan sled down the mountain. You can read about all these points of interest below.

Even if you don’t visit any of the gardens, Monte cable car is a must-do in Funchal – the views are spectacular!

Practical information: Cable car operates daily from 9 AM to 5.45 PM (hours might differ in high season). You can get tickets for a one-way ride only and also combination tickets with a cable car to Madeira Botanical Garden. For up-to-date practical information, please consult the official website . Normally, you can just get the tickets on the spot as well.

6. Visit Monte Palace Tropical Garden

Monte Palace Tropical Garden is another amazing garden you can visit in Funchal. Since it’s located just next to the upper station of Monte cable car, it’s probably the most visited garden in Funchal.

Featuring over 100,000 plant species with a separate section devoted solely to Madeira’s flora, it’s a garden that is well worth a few hours of your time. If you visit just one garden in Funchal, make it the Monte Palace Tropical Garden.

The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is located at the Quinta Monte Palace – a beautiful mansion that in combination with a pond, a little waterfall, and various little structures makes it look like the gardens of some fairytale castle.

Practical information:  The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is open daily from 9.30 AM to 6 PM.

7. Visit Madeira Botanical Garden

Madeira is an island of flowers and Funchal is the city of gardens.  Madeira Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico) . This is the biggest garden with the most varied collection of plants from all over the world.

The estate where the Botanical Garden is located dates from 1880 and used to be privately owned. What a garden for one family!

The Botanical Gardens are located high on the hill above Funchal with amazing views as an added bonus. Inside, you will find a big variety of different style gardens, including French and Japanese gardens. Kids loved the cute little Madeira houses and also a small natural history museum.

Practical information: The Botanical Garden is open daily from 9 AM to 6 PM and can easily be reached by cable car from Monte (so after you take the above-mentioned Monte cable car to get to the top of the mountain). If you have a car, you can also drive up there, but it’s quite tricky to get to and the parking area isn’t very big.

Madeira Botanical Garden - Jardim Botanico - is one of the most beautiful gardens of Funchal

8. See the Church of Our Lady of Monte

The Church of Our Lady of Monte (Igreja do Monte) is a little 18th-century church just a few steps away from Monte cable car top station and the Monte Palace Tropical Garden. You’ll have to negotiate some very steep stairs, but it’s well worth it. On a clear day, you can see the town of Funchal, the beautiful coastline, and the mountains.

The exterior of the church doesn’t look very special, but the interior is very well decorated with beautiful paintings and statues. Worth visiting is the tomb of Charles I. He was the last emperor of Austria (and of the Habsburg dynasty) and spent the last years of his life in exile in Madeira.

I read somewhere that you can climb the steps to the roof of the church for beautiful views of Funchal, but the church was just closing when we visited, so I cannot confirm if that’s the case.

Igreja do Monte is one of the things you have to see in Funchal

9. Take a Wicker Toboggan Sled Ride

Dating from the end of the 19th century, wickerwork is a very important industry in Madeira. Wicker is used for all kinds of objects like breadbaskets or chairs, but also for the world-famous Madeira wicker baskets.

Wicker basket sled ride down the steep streets of Monte is probably the most unique tourist attraction in Funchal. Toboggans are pushed and steered by two runners wearing traditional white costumes and straw hats and can seat two people (three if one of them is a child).

If you are brave enough to try it, you’re in for a dare-devilish ride and an experience of a lifetime.

Toboggan ride in the traditional wicker basket is an old Madeira tradition. In the past local residents used it as a means of transport to quickly get from the village of Monte high on the mountain to the town of Funchal, by the sea. Don’t ask me how they got their sleds back up to the village in those days; nowadays they load the sleds on a small truck that brings them (and the drivers) back to Monte.

Wicker Toboggan Sled Ride is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Funchal Madeira

The wicker toboggan sled ride in Funchal is an extremely popular and a really touristy attraction. Reviews from tourists are from ‘boring’ and ‘not worth the money’ to ‘the most thrilling ride’ and ‘experience of a lifetime’… So it’s really up to you to decide if you want to give it a try. One thing is for sure – it’s something truly unique that you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Practical information:  Toboggan ride starts at The Church of Our Lady of Monte (Igreja do Monte). You’ll need to take a cable car to Monte first. The 2km long descent takes about 10 minutes and brings you to Livramento, so not all the way back to Funchal.

You’ll either have to take a taxi or a bus, or walk back to the cable car (uphill) or down to the city, which is a really long walk. If I remember well, the ride costs 30 EUR for a sled with 2 people (25 EUR if you go alone), and you can also get a picture taken for 10 EUR. You can get the tickets there on the spot, so there’s no need to book anything in advance.

TIP: If you decide to take this sled ride, make sure you first visit all the points of interest in Monte, so that you don’t have to walk back up the hill afterwards.

Some organized excursions of Madeira island also come to Monte and offer the wicker toboggan experience as part of the tour. This is one of the best options – a 4-hour tour that visits the Nuns Valley, Monte, and includes a sleigh ride.

10. Taste Madeira Wine

No trip to Madeira would be complete without tasting some of Madeira’s famous sweet wine. There are several wine museums and cellars in Funchal, but the one that is most worth a visit is The Old Blandy Wine Lodge .

Located in the oldest area of Funchal, Blandy’s Wine Lodge is a place where you can not only learn about the making of the Madeira wine but also taste the various styles of Vinho Madeira. They have been making Madeira wine for over 200 years, so even if you have no interest in the wine itself, this place is well worth a visit.

TIP: Join the food and wine walking tour of Funchal . It’s a great way to explore the city and get to taste some traditional local food and drinks of Madeira.

11. Relax at Funchal Waterfront

Funchal has a beautiful waterfront area . It’s the place where cruise ships dock, boat trips depart, and it was also our first introduction to the city as we parked the car at the big parking garage nearby.

The waterfront area has been recently redone and features a new leisure area called Praca do Povo . It’s a wonderful place to stroll around, watch the boats, and just relax after a busy day of sightseeing. There is a small park and even a bathing area, right in the heart of Funchal.

We loved just hanging around here. It’s a big wide promenade with lots of space for kids to run and nice areas for the adults to relax. There are several places where you can get a cup of coffee or lunch and it’s literally just a few minutes walk to Funchal Old Town.

***All the places mentioned above are the ones that are most worth a visit in Funchal. Below you can find a small selection of other things to do in Funchal if you have more time.

12. Take Hop-on Hop-off Bus

Funchal Hop-on Hop-off bus is a great way to see the main attractions just outside Funchal city center.

You can book a 48-hr ticket, but if you have more time in Funchal, consider a 5-day option which costs just a tiny bit more and makes it possible to easily visit the picturesque village of Câmara de Lobos and the cliffs of Cabo Girão.

Here you can find more information and book your tickets for the hop-on-hop-off bus .

13. Afternoon Tea at The Reid’s

Dating from 1890, Belmond Reid’s Palace is one of the most famous hotels in the world with past guests like Sisi (Austrian Empress), Winston Churchill, and Roger Moore to name just a few.

Even if you are not staying at the hotel, you can go there for afternoon tea and enjoy the gorgeous panoramic views and superb service of a bygone era. It’s something special to do in Funchal and an affordable luxury experience, but you better book it in advance.

TIP: If you are looking for a really nice hotel to stay in Madeira, Belmond Reid’s Palace is one of the top luxury resorts with fantastic guest reviews. You can check the prices/availability for this hotel here .

14. Madeira Story Centre

Madeira Story Centre is a modern museum showing the complete history of Madeira. From its volcanic origins to the history of Portuguese explorers and pirates, to the development of tourism and the most recent history of the island.

Practical information: This museum is located just next to the bottom station of the Monte cable car. Open daily from 10 AM to 7 PM. See their website for more info.

15. Jesuits’ College of Funchal

Considered one of the most remarkable buildings of Madeira, the 16th-century Jesuit College of Funchal is also worth a short visit. Part of the buildings now house the University of Funchal.

The college has a wonderful interior with amazing sculptures and paintings and can be visited from Monday to Saturday. For just 1 EUR you can climb the tower and enjoy the views of Funchal.

Rumour has it that the student café has good coffee with delicious custard cakes (pastel de nata) at very low prices.

16. Madeira Film Experience

Madeira Film Experience is exactly what the name suggests. It’s a film that covers the 600 years of the history and culture of the island.

Practical information:  The film takes just 30 minutes and is available in several languages. More information on their website .

17. Visit CR7 Museum

CR7 is a museum dedicated to Madeira’s most famous football player – Cristiano Ronaldo. He’s a living legend here and even Madeira’s airport has recently been named after him.

I wouldn’t say that this museum is a must-see in Funchal, but if you are a huge fan and have half an hour to spare, you may want to take a look inside. The museum is not so much about Ronaldo as a person, but rather focused on his achievements. It’s full of memorabilia, trophies, medals & life-size statues of Madeira’s all-time best football player.

If you just want to take a picture with the statue of your hero, you can do that outside as well – no need to go inside the museum just for that.

Practical information: CR7 museum is located at the waterfront. Open Monday to Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM.

CR7 museum is one of the newest museums you can visit in Funchal Madeira

18. Santa Clara Monastery

Convento de Santa Clara is a 15th-century working monastery just a bit up a steep hill from the center of Funchal.

The convent is open just a few hours a day (10-12, and not on Sundays). For just 2 EUR you get a guided tour by one of the nuns. We didn’t get here on time, but the reviews online are really positive. People say it’s a true hidden gem of Funchal, well worth a visit.

19. Quinta das Cruzes

Museu Quinta das Cruzes, as well as the gardens, are nice to see if you are looking for more nice things to do in Funchal. The house has a collection of 17-18th century furniture and household items giving you a good idea of how wealthy people lived in Madeira several hundred years ago.

The adjacent gardens can be visited free of charge. They have a strange archeological collection of old gravestones, crosses, gargoyles and other finds coming from old churches and palaces from all over Madeira.

20. Palheiro Gardens

Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro is an English-style park a bit outside the city. Featuring over 3,000 plant species and traversed by avenues planted with camellias and exotic trees, it’s a wonderful garden to visit in Funchal.

These gardens are quite hard to get to without a car and would probably take you at least half a day to visit. So it’s not something I recommend if you have limited time. However, if you are in Madeira for a week or two, you should certainly consider going here.

Practical information: Open daily from 9 AM to 5.30 PM.

Funchal is the city of gardens

21. Venture Outside the City

In addition to Funchal attractions, I really recommend that you also visit the earlier-mentioned fishermen’s village of Câmara de Lobos and the cliffs of Cabo Girão. Both these places are very close to the city (see the hop-on-hop-off bus section above) and are really simple to visit.

If you have a few hours to spare in Funchal, I can also recommend a whale-watching trip – Madeira is a great place to see whales and dolphins.

TIP: If you don’t have a car in Madeira, I also suggest these two highly-rated and very popular organized day trips from Funchal: Best of the West of Madeira island and Madeira East Island Tour . These tours are an excellent introduction to Madeira for first-time visitors.

You can see dolphins really close to the coast in Madeira

So, this is our selection of the best things to do in Funchal . There are, of course, many other places of interest that are worth a visit in the city.

However, remember that Madeira is much more than Funchal! So what you choose to see and do in Funchal, will highly depend on how much time you have on the island.

Looking for a place to retire outside of the U.S. and am seriously considering Madeira. Can you tell me about residential property to purchase, health care options, taxes, etc.? Or, could you recommend where I might find this kind of information?

Monday 22nd of March 2021

Hi Teri, Madeira is a Portuguese island, so you should look for information about Portugal in general - there should be plenty of info online. I'm not sure how easy it is for someone outside the EU to retire in Europe, but everything is possible if you put your mind to it. Unfortunately, I can't help you with any of this. But I would recommend to first travel to Madeira and spend a few months there before starting with any paperwork. It's only when you've lived somewhere for a while that you get a good feeling of how it actually is. It's never the same as simply visiting for a holiday. Good luck!

The old lanes, wide 20th-century boulevards and pretty squares of central West Funchal are where you’ll find some of Madeira’s top experiences, its best shopping and most interesting museums. It’s also the busiest part of the island with yellow buses, street cafes and shoppers from outside Funchal packing the streets from morning until sundown.

Funchal 101: The Essential Guide

Across the Atlantic Ocean, on an island archipelago belonging to Portugal, is the stunning paradise that is Madeira, and its capital city Funchal.

Historically, the city was known for its “white gold” Madeiran sugar but tourists visit it today for its warm weather, delicious wine, and incredible picturesque views.

Thinking about a trip to Funchal? Read on for a complete guide to Funchal in Portugal.

Funchal is Madeira’s largest city, with a population of 111 982 people, making it also the sixth largest city in Portugal.

It is one of Portugal’s main tourist attractions, attracting travellers mostly because of its splendid nature, natural beaches and celebrations such as New Year’s Eve or the Carnival.

Do you want to learn more about Madeira? We’ve created an all you need to know guide about the island, read it here .

Where is Funchal, Madeira

Funchal is located on the main island of Madeira and it’s the capital of this Archipelago. The Madeira island is located 560 km off the coast of Morocco,  978 km south of Portugal, in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.

How to get to Funchal

Funchal is a major tourist town with easy access to an international airport “Funchal Airport” (FNC), located in the Santa Cruz municipality. It takes around 25 minutes to get to the city centre from the airport.

Another popular means of visiting Funchal is on a cruise ship! Funchal is actually the leading Portuguese port cruise liner docking, with cruise ships coming in from every direction to stop off at the stunning island.

Discover more about the other Portuguese airports with our Portuguese airport guide .

Funchal Weather

Funchal Sea

Bring your swimming gear! You can expect a sub-tropical Mediterranean climate year-round in Funchal. Instead of four seasons, the city generally experiences two main seasons – the “wet” season from October to March with temperatures averaging 20-25 °C (68-77 °F).

The “dry” season from April to September with averages of 21-26 °C (69-78 °F).

Humidity levels remain pretty consistent at about 70 per cent, and sea temperatures will reach as high as 26 °C (78 °F) in August and as low as 18 °C (64 °F) in January.

So really, there is no “best” time to visit, rather you can visit any time for enjoyable weather!

Nothing like knowing exactly what weather to expect when you visit Portugal. Check out our guide .

Things to do in Funchal

Besides taking in the extraordinary views and Funchal’s famous cuisine, there are plenty of adventurous outdoor activities to enjoy while on the island.

Dolphin Watching Funchal

Tourists can explore the wonders of the deep Atlantic Ocean through dive trips or by surfing waves at the various beaches, swimming with dolphins or even whale-watching.

Lido Swimming Pool Funchal

A trip to the beach becomes very interesting when you realise the “beaches” in Madeira don’t all have sand and if they do, they are black sandy beaches (not yellow!). Instead, swimming pools and the warm sea temperatures have to make up for the lack of sand. The locals will often lay their beach towel on the cobblestone waterfront anyway!

Funchal Cable Car Madeira

The Funchal Cable Car (open 9am-6pm) is another popular attraction, taking tourists on a journey from the lower section of Funchal to the parish of Monte, which has beautiful botanical gardens.

The inclined ride takes about 15-25 minutes and gives you a chance to see the magical island views from above.

Visitors could also a day trip to other regions of the island to explore the beautiful gardens, hiking routes and mountain woods.

The island is also home to some of Europe’s finest golf courses. Read our other article here about the best golf courses in Portugal and what else to do around the island of Madeira .

Best Restaurants in Funchal

Markets Funchal

Funchal is a city with unique flavours and delicacies that you should try when visiting! Caco bread (bolo do caco), honey cake, Annona, guava, tuna, and Madeira wine, just to name a few!

Here are some of our favourite Portuguese restaurants to try dishes with these ingredients:

Real Canoa – Bruno’s – a welcoming restaurant in the centre of the city, with great value and delicious food to suit all tastes.

Bruno is renowned for making his guests feel very welcome with a hearty Portuguese meal. The prawn curry, sea bass, and steak dishes are all excellent choices.

Restaurante Hemingway – As a fan of the Lost Generation author, I cannot help but recommend Restaurante Hemingway in Funchal.

The venue is great for a cosy romantic dinner or for families. The beef wellington, stuffed mushrooms and tiramisu and notable dishes.

MadMarket – Located in a food market court, this restaurant offers guests an authentic Portuguese experience.

The menu includes the flavours and delicacies of the island, prepared with love and passion for the region. The grilled shrimp, octopus, and sweet potato fries are definitely worth trying.

shows an image of a water fountain in front of Funchal town

Welcome to our complete Funchal travel guide! After exploring the Madeiran capital many times, we’ve assembled this guide to give you insights on some of the best things to do in Funchal, where to stay, eat, drink, plus plenty of tips and tricks for visiting. Funchal is a popular cruise port and gets hundreds of visitors every day. It’s also a great place to visit for a long weekend or as part of a holiday exploring the entire island. You simply can’t miss it when visiting Madeira!

Read our Funchal travel guide to find out all the information you need to help plan your upcoming trip.

Why Funchal?

Funchal is the heart of Madeira, offering something for absolutely everyone, with plenty of things to do all in one place. Most tourists stay in Funchal when visiting Madeira, either in the city centre, or just outside in the Lido hotel area. With its ideal south-east location, it benefits from warm weather year round and doesn’t get a lot of rain.

We always recommend Funchal as a base for your time in Madeira as it has plenty of restaurants, hotels, cafes and bars. Like most towns, Funchal is very touristy, but there’s areas that are less so. It’s always good to do your research  beforehand, especially when it comes to looking for restaurant options, as the tourist hot spots are more likely to rip you off. Overall, Funchal is a must-see place during your time in Madeira. It’s full of history, attractions and great places to eat.

When should you visit Funchal?

One main reasons why Funchal is so popular is the weather. Similar to the likes of the Canary Islands, Madeira, and in particular Funchal, offers warm weather year-round. You can visit Funchal at any time of the year, but if you’re looking to venture out to explore other areas in the island, we suggest visiting from the months of March – November. If you love Christmas, December is also a great time to visit the island. With lots of Christmas markets and festivities happening in Funchal, it’s the place to be to feel that Christmas spirit. Many people also choose to visit Funchal for New Year’s Eve. It has one of the biggest NYE fireworks displays in the world!

Top things to do in Funchal

You can see a lot of Funchal’s top attractions in one day, but if you have the time, we recommend at least 2 or 3 days here. It’ll allow plenty of time for relaxation, having a Poncha or two, and wandering around the colourful streets. Here are some of the top things to do in Funchal for any visit.

Visit the beautiful gardens of Monte via cable car

Can you say that you’ve visited Funchal without heading up to Monte by cable car? It’s the number one thing to do on the island, and pretty much everyone does it. You’ll need to get the cable car up to the top of Monte which will take around 15 minutes. The cable car ride is an attraction in itself, providing incredible panoramic views of the town from below. At the top, you can explore both Monte Palace Tropical Gardens and Funchal Botanical Gardens are the top places to visit once you reach Monte. Seeing both garden areas takes at least half a day and they feature some of the most beautiful scenery on the island. Each garden area is different and worth visiting in themselves.

Be sure to check out our complete guide on visiting the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens.

The funchal toboggan ride.

Another top-rated activity to do in Funchal is riding down the hill from Monte in a wicker basket, aka the famous toboggan ride. It sounds a bit terrifying, but it’s actually great fun and many tourists opt for this method of transport to return to Funchal after visiting Monte. The toboggans were in fact used as transportation many years ago as a quick way of descending down from the hilltop. Being a popular tourist attraction. It costs 30 euros for two people for less than a 10-minute ride, but it’s worth the fun and thrilling experience!

Explore the old town of Funchal

Funchal’s Old Town centre is an attraction in itself. It’s a mixture of narrow and colourful alleyways, with locals living amongst tourists and a vibrant, upbeat atmosphere. It’s also a place that comes to life in the evenings, with people dining outdoors and enjoying a glass of wine in the streets. We recommend simply wandering around the Old Town area, marvelling at the old churches, colourful houses and Portuguese-style architecture.

Funchal Old Town streets - The best things to do in Funchal

Santa Maria street art

One unique street that you simply can’t miss in Funchal is Rua da Santa Maria. This busy, touristic street is never short on good atmosphere! Almost every door on the street has a unique ‘street art’ mural, both heartfelt and humorous art. It’s really cool to see, so have your camera at the ready!

Mercado dos Lavradores

After wandering through the streets of Old town Funchal, you can stop off at the farmers market, also known as Mercado dos Lavradores. It’s a famous market that’s become a very popular tourist spot. The vendors inside sell all sorts of exotic fruits and vegetables, some of which you can sample at the stalls before buying. Most items are way overpriced. However, it’s a great chance you try some fruits you’ve haven’t had before. Even if you don’t buy anything, the bustling market is a great place to wander around.

Shows a selection of tropical fruits at a market

Santa Catarina Park

Santa Catarina Park has to be one of the most beautiful parks on the island. It’s perched on a hill that overlooks town, featuring a plethora of green areas to relax in the sun. Walking trails, fountains, a lake and many varieties of local flowers make up this idyllic park. It also has a famous café in the centre. Visit for a morning coffee and admire the view of the city. It’s one of the best things to do in Funchal when you want a break from all the walking around.

image of a girl standing in front of a water fountain

Have an authentic Madeiran meal

Funchal is a bustling town that attracts many tourists every day, making it difficult to find a great spot for dinner. Many restaurants in the centre of town cater towards tourists, not locals. However, do a little research and you’ll find some amazing places to eat in Funchal. We recommend trying the famous Espetada (grilled hanging meat on the iron) and Espada (scabbard fish with fried banana and passion fruit sauce). We’ve included our favourite restaurant recommendations below for inspiration.

funchal travel guide

Have a Poncha at Rei da Poncha

If you like to have a drink in the evening, you can’t leave the island without trying the famous ‘Poncha’. Made from distilled alcohol from sugar cane juice, it’s a refreshing drink with a kick, which comes in many different flavours. Choose from passion fruit, lemon, strawberry, kiwi and the traditional, orange. We recommend heading to Rei da Poncha. It’s one of the best places to get a Poncha on the island!

Shows Rei Da Poncha bar

Walk along the marina and see the cruise ships

For that holiday feeling, spend time walking along the stunning promenade that takes you from Funchal town to the ‘Lido’ hotel area. It’s a great place to take a walk either during the day or on an evening before dinner. Large cruise ships arrive almost every day, so you might even be lucky enough to see one come in to dock. This area is currently undergoing development and will soon have a variety of shops and sea-view bars and restaurants to check out.

Visit the CR7 Museum

Whether you’re a Ronaldo fan or not, Madeira undoubtedly gained worldwide popularity from one of the world’s most recognised and famous footballers, Cristiano Ronaldo. He was born and raised on the island. CR7 Museum is located next to the marina, along with his iconic bronze statue. If you want to go all out, why not stay at the CR7 hotel for a night?

Wine tasting at blandy’s wine lodge.

Another top thing to do in Funchal is to join a wine tasting tour. It’s a fun activity that you can enjoy with family or friends, whilst learning about the history of Madeiran wine. We recommend Blandy’s Wine Lodge , which is located in the heart of town. It’s a seven-generation family-run winery that has a rich history in Madeira. It gets busy so we recommend booking a tour in advance.

Visit Funchal Sé cathedral

Funchal is home to many beautiful churches, but the star of the show is Sé Cathedral. This beautiful Portuguese-style church has a grand white-stone exterior and tall pointed turrets. The inside of the church is just as beautiful, showcasing tall stained-glass windows, wooden pillars and detailed sculptures. The cathedral is open daily for services, but anyone can take a walk inside when mass isn’t on. There’s no need to pre-book to visit.

Take a stroll along Lido promenade

If you’re staying in the Lido area or just fancy venturing a little out of town on a scenic walk, be sure to check out the Lido promenade. This long coastal promenade stretches for miles! You’ll walk past rocky beaches, natural swimming pools, shops, cafes, sunset bars and lots of nice tropical scenery. On a weekend, it comes alive with locals meeting up and kids playing in the sunshine.

The best hotels in Funchal

As we’ve already mentioned, Funchal is a top place to stay in Madeira. There are two areas of Funchal that we recommend; Funchal town itself and the Lido area further to the south. Each location has countless hotels for every budget and lots of nearby amenities. See an overview on each below:

The Lido area of Funchal is where you’ll find the larger resorts with swimming pools, sea view hotels and a plethora of half board and all-inclusive options. Lido has a real ‘holiday feel’ to it and is where most tourists stay. Here you’ll find resorts that are budget friendly, all the way to resorts that cost over 500 euros per night. We’ve stayed in the Lido area a few times and can really appreciate the laid-back atmosphere. You’re only a short walk away from Funchal town and the area is well connected by bus.

Shows the Lido promenade area - Funchal travel guide

Funchal old town

If you like being in the centre of town with museums, cafés, restaurants, bars and shops within walking distance, staying in the heart of Funchal might be the best choice for you. The main town area of Funchal is definitely busier than the likes of Lido. Whilst it won’t give you that ‘holiday beach vibe,’ it has plenty to see and do. In our opinion, staying in the centre of Funchal feels a lot like a city break.

We’ve included some of our top Funchal hotel recommendations below.

Shows the quaint streets of Funchal old town - The top things to do in Funchal

AFFORDABLE: Hotel Baia Azul

View on booking.com | tripadvisor rating 4.5/5.

If you’re looking for an affordable getaway that’s well within budget, but also has many of the facilities you often look for in a hotel, Hotel Baia Azul may well tick all your boxes. This hotel is located further away from the main hotel area. It’s closer to the edge of the Lido cliffside, next to the popular shopping mall, The Forum. Hotel Baia Azul has 2 outdoor swimming pools, an indoor pool, two bars, two restaurants, wonderful spa facilities and modern rooms. We recommend requesting a sea view room if possible.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hotel Baía Azul (@hotelbaiaazul)

MODERATEly priced: HOTEL VIDA MAR

Hotel Vida Mar is large, 5-star resort located in the heart of the Lido area on the way to Funchal town. It’s slightly more expensive than the likes of Baia Azul, but for good reason. The facilities are second to none and the infinity pool overlooking the sea is idyllic. This hotel will suit people from all different age groups, but we found that most people here were generally an older demographic. The hotel is in a great location, with many bars and restaurants only a 2-minute walk away.

LUXURY: CLIFF BAY RESORT

View on booking.com | tripadvisor rating 5/5.

If you’re looking to splash out on holiday, why not treat yourself and a loved one to a very exclusive stay at the Cliff Bay Resort? This luxurious hotel oozes in elegance, making it the perfect place for a romantic getaway. The hotel is located on the outskirts of the main area of Lido, closer to Funchal town. It’s a top-tier 5-star hotel, offering some of the most incredible views of the ocean from room balconies. At the Cliff Bay, you have direct access to the sea-front, a choice of three swimming pools, a spa, tennis courts and a 2 Michelin star restaurant right on your doorstep.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Cliff Bay (@thecliffbay)

AFFORDABLE: Travellers Pearl by Storytellers

Staying in the heart of Funchal town comes with its disadvantages. It can be quite expensive, and you may not always be getting good value for money. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly option, which still allows you have to privacy and space to relax after a day of sightseeing, the Travellers Pearl by Storytellers is a good option. Its travel theme alone is a unique selling point and makes this hotel stand out from the rest. The apartments are spacious and have cooking facilities if you fancy a night in to cook your own meals. The Travellers Pearl may not have the facilities of some other hotels in the city. However, for the price you pay, we think it’s a steal!

MODERATE: HOTEL MADEIRA

Funchal old town is a great place to base yourself as you’re located a short walk from some amazing attractions and restaurants. If you’re looking for a hotel that’s handy and affordable, we recommend Hotel Madeira. It’s a bright and welcoming hotel, offering a selection of suites as well as standard rooms. One big positive about this hotel is its rooftop swimming pool, which is a great place to relax after a day of sightseeing. It’s a cosy and intimate hotel, but it also has a family appeal to it.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Hotel Madeira (@hotelmadeira)

luxury: Hotel Porto Santa Maria

View on booking.com | tripadvisor rating 4.5/5.

If you’re looking for a luxury hotel right in the centre of Funchal, Hotel Porto Santa Maria might be the one for you. Located next to São Tiago Fortress and just a 20 second walk away from the centre of town, this hotel is great for those who want to be in amongst the action. Even though Porto Santo Maria is in a central location, it’s right at the end of Funchal promenade, away from all the crowds and tourists. You’ll get to relax in the sun as you watch the cruise ships coming in.

The rooms here really have one of the best rooms in the city! The food served here is spectacular, with lots of variety. You can even treat yourself to a champagne breakfast one morning. We recommend requesting a room with a balcony view.

The best Funchal restaurants

The below Funchal restaurants are all in the centre of town.

O.Giro Churros & Paninis

View on map | tripadvisor rating 5/5.

After a morning of sightseeing in Funchal, you’ll want to freshen up and re-charge your batteries. Head past Jardim Municipial do Funchal  to a quaint corner restaurant, O.Giro Churros & Paninis. It doesn’t look like much from the outside and perhaps the thought of a panini won’t make your tastebuds water. However, let us assure you that the sandwiches here are freshly made with fresh ingredients and meats, with the tastiest hand cut fries you’ll ever taste.

The star of the show is the churros. ‘The best churros you’ll ever eat,’ – a quote from the staff members here. The food is really well priced considering the quality and quantity you get. We visit this place every time we’re in Funchal – it’s the perfect lunch spot.

Regional Flavours

View on map | tripadvisor rating 4.5/5.

If you want a memorable, traditional meal with outdoor dining, check out Regional Flavours. Located down a quieter and less touristic street in Funchal’s old town, Regional Flavours is a family-run restaurant that serves authentic Madeiran cuisine, along with many Mediterranean dishes for those that fancy more familiar foods. The waiters have a unique sense of humour and will enjoy making you laugh.

We recommend trying either the Espetada or the Espada. Both dishes were phenomenal! If you have room for dessert, opt for the berry cheesecake or the famous passionfruit panna cotta – you won’t regret it. Prices here are reasonable, but we suggest checking out ‘The Fork’ app as they often provide discounts on certain days.

Our final Funchal town restaurant recommendation is NoitEscuro. Located just a few minutes’ walk away from the sea-front promenade, this popular restaurant serves delicious Portuguese food. With an extensive menu serving traditional Madeiran and Portugal-mainland dishes, indoor and outdoor seating, and a relaxing, yet upbeat ambiance, it’s a great place to visit for your evening meal. The TripAdvisor reviews speak for themselves! Prices are reasonable and you get a lot of food for your money. They’re known for their Franesinha, a monster of a sandwich that was invented in Porto.

The best restaurants in Lido

The below Funchal restaurants are all located in the Lido hotel area to the south of Funchal town.

La Vaca Negra

Calling all meat-eaters, this one’s for you! Madeira is never short of steak houses, and La Vaca Negra is one of the best places to get a steak on the island. BBQ meat is the speciality at this restaurant, and they do it very well! It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but as soon as you step inside, you’ll smell the aroma of the delicious meat and will realise you’ve made the right choice. They serve various cuts of steak, ribs, chops and fish dishes. Just be sure to leave some room for dessert!

Window to Asia

Whilst we always try to eat as many local dishes as possible, you can sometimes miss other cuisines. This is especially true if you’re on holiday for a while. One restaurant that sits up high on our list of the best Funchal restaurants is Window to Asia. This new and modern restaurant is located a few minutes-walk away from the centre of the Lido area.

They serve authentic Asian dishes that are cooked by a Thai chef. The setting is beautiful, and the décor makes you feel like you’re in South-East Asia. Prices here a little expensive for the type of food, but it’s worth it if you fancy spending a little more on your last night in Funchal. The atmosphere is sublime.

Our top tips for visiting Funchal

shows a garden in Funchal next to yellow taxis

  • As with many popular tourist destinations, Funchal can get very busy, especially during the peak times of the year (June – August). However, with Madeira being an all-year-round destination, it’s even quite busy during months that you’d expect to be quiet. Keep this in mind when sightseeing in town and aim to arrive at attractions first thing on a morning.
  • Head out of the tourist spots and explore hidden backstreets of Funchal. The narrow alleys away from town have authentic restaurants and bars with much cheaper prices.
  • When looking for somewhere to have lunch or dinner in Funchal, check the reviews on TripAdvisor. There are many tourist hot spots which are generally over-priced and the food isn’t the best. Refer back to our above Funchal restaurant recommendations if you need some inspiration.
  • Consider booking restaurants in advance as places can get busy. Some restaurants book up days in advance.
  • If you want a break from walking around, relax in one of the many parks: Santa Catarina, Funchal Panoramic Gardens and Jardim Municipal do Funchal are all excellent.
  • Everything in Funchal is within walking distance, so there isn’t really any need for using the tour bus. Save money by exploring this vibrant place by foot.
  • Madeira is very hilly and has many inclining paths that could cause issues for those with mobility issues. We recommend staying in the centre of town if this is a concern.
  • If you want to be in the heart of Funchal with everything at your doorstep, stay in Funchal town. For a relaxing holiday atmosphere, find a hotel in the Lido area. Check out our where to stay in Funchal here for plenty of accommodation ideas.
  • Try to avoid driving in Funchal. Streets are extremely narrow, it’s tough to find parking and there are many one-way systems. We recommend catching a bus or taxi to town instead.
  • When visiting Monte by cable car, we recommend spending at least 4/5 hours here. You’ll want to spend enough time walking around the gardens, stopping for a coffee or lunch. There’s a lot to see up there!
  • On a similar note, be sure to arrive before 10am for the cable car. The queues quickly grow later into the morning.
  • Make sure to pack a light jacket or cardigan when heading up to Monte. The weather can be hit or miss due to it being up a mountain. This goes for any time of the year you visit.

We’ve reached the end of our Funchal travel guide. We hope we inspired you with plenty of attraction, eating out and hotel recommendations and you can now explore for yourself. If you have any of your own Funchal travel tips, be sure to post a comment below. We’d love to hear them!

1. Go whale and dolphin watching

Things to do in Funchal Madeira - Dolphin cruise - Dolphins

As an avid fan of marine life, I joined three different trips with three different companies. The best value for money is this VIP cruise . With 15 guests and 3 crew members, you’re well looked after by the attentive team. Friendly and informative, they talk you through what to look out for under the water and happily answered any questions I had.

The crew will take photos of you and all the creatures you encounter, so don’t worry about getting your phone wet. Within a few days, they had emailed me the pics to preserve the memories of what is an exceptional dolphin-watching cruise.

2. see living plant ‘fossils’ at monte palace tropical garden.

Things to do in Funchal Madeira - Monte Palace Tropical Garden

Covering over 17 acres and various landscaped spaces, the green spaces around Monte Palace (now a museum) includes two oriental gardens (Japanese and Chinese), a fish-filled lake, and a world-class collection of tiles dotted around the gardens. A map is essential, so grab one at the entrance.

A vast array of exotic plants take center stage. There are over thousands of species, including a rare collection of Cycads, a species dating back 200 million years and oft-described as living fossils. There are also indigenous plants, including laurel trees, and international species, like some improbably thriving Scottish heather.

The tiles I mentioned are considered one of the most significant collections in Portugal. Distributed among walkways and plants, the collection includes 15-16th century Hispano-Moorish creations, alongside Portuguese tiles from different periods stretching back to the 16th century.

Exemplifying the sheer variety of things to see in the gardens, the museum houses around 1,000 contemporary Zimbabwean sculptures and a surprisingly diverting mineral and precious gems museum.

Things to do in Funchal Madeira - Monte Palace Tropical Garden - View of central lake

The gardens and palace perched high above Funchal have a long and noteworthy history. A British Consul General, Charles Murray, first acquired the estate in the 18th century. His grand ambitions transformed the terrain into what was later named Quinta do Prazer (translation: The Pleasure Estate.)

Alfredo Guilherme Rodrigues saw the potential in 1897 and built a home modeled on palaces in the Rhineland. This was later transformed into the fashionable Monte Palace Hotel, beloved for its singular setting and inspiring views.

After passing away in 1943, the palace and gardens were forgotten until local businessman José Manuel Rodrigues Berardo purchased the site in 1987. It was his dream to build the lush tropical gardens, with an investment that transformed the space into what you see today.

Things to do in Funchal Madeira - Monte Palace Tropical Garden - Fountain

The Monte Palace Tropical Garden rightly features in many guides as one of the best things to do in Madeira. You could easily spend an afternoon lost in a florescent reverie until you head back down to Funchal, where I recommend taking an adrenaline-pumping toboggan ride sure to snap you out of your reverie.

Oh, and there is no better way to reach Monte Palace than by cable car. It drops you right outside the entrance and is another of those essential things to do in Madeira.

Where: Monte Palace Madeira , Caminho do Monte 174, Funchal. Recommended tour: If you enjoy gardens, I recommend joining this private tour which combines both the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens with the Botanical Gardens

How to get there :

  • Car – Plentiful parking if you choose to drive. It’s about a 15-minute drive from Funchal center.
  • Largo da Fonte T-20 – Horários do Funchal urban services 20, 56, 103, 138
  • Cable Car – Reach the base station in Almirante Reis gardens, in the old quarter of Funchal. (€12.50 adults, €6.50 for children aged 7-14.) Useful for visiting the Madeira Botanical Gardens too.

3. Visit the tomb of the last Austro-Hungarian Emperor at the Church of Our Lady of the Mount

Things to do in Funchal Madeira - Monte Church Sanctuary

The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte, or Church of Our Lady of the Mount, stands on the foundations of a 15th-century chapel. Destroyed in the 1748 earthquake, the new church was completed in 1818. The church, known for its graceful chandeliers and 17-18th century gold and silver craft, is home to a statue of Our Lady of Monte that arrived with the earliest Portuguese settlers. It has been the focus of Madeiran pilgrimages ever since.

The church also holds the tomb of the unfortunate Charles I (Karl I), the former Austrian Emperor and King of Hungary. Having ascended to the throne in the middle of the First World War, he witnessed the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian empire his family had ruled for centuries. Having failed to sue for peace, despite several efforts, his fate was forever tied to the Axis defeat. In 1919, the newly empowered Austrian Parliament exiled Charles to Switzerland. Desperately trying to reclaim his Hungarian throne, the former emperor was banished again in 1921. This time to Madeira, an island considered suitably remote. A year later, he died of respiratory illness after catching a cold.

The tomb and statue of Charles I give the pretty church an extra historical dimension, making it one of the more unusual things to do in Funchal.

Where : Monte Church Sanctuary , Rampa da Sacristia 1, Funchal. A 15-minute drive from Funchal center.

 How to get there:

4. Fly down the hills of Funchal on the famous Monte Toboggans

Things to do in Funchal Madeira - Monte Toboggan

Disconcertingly made of wicker and wood, the sleds have 2-3 seats and two carreiros , your pilots for the wild ride. They look professional, decked out in white uniforms and straw hats. But if you scare easily, don’t ask how the brakes work.

Okay, you should probably know. The carreiros use their feet (and sturdy boots) to slow down. Not that they care to slow down too often as they reach top speeds of 24 mph (38 kph) and reach the bottom in just 10 minutes.  You land in the Funchal suburb of Livramento, 1.2 miles (2km) away, energized and with a huge grin.

Where: Associação dos Carreiros do Monte, Caminho do Monte, Entrada 151, Porta 4, Funchal.

Recommended tour: There is usually quite a long wait. So, if you have a full day of activities, consider joining this island tour that culminates in the legendary toboggan rides.

How to get there:

  • Car – Easy to drive to. There is ample parking close to Monte Church Sanctuary nearby.
  • Nearest bus stop – Antes Largo da Fonte (Horários do Funchal urban services 21, 48, 56, 103, 138.)
  • Cable Car – Leaves from the base station in Almirante Reis gardens, in the old quarter of Funchal. (€12.50 for adults, €6.50 for children aged 7-14.)

  Opening hours:

  • Mon-Sat 9am – 6pm (closed on Sundays)
  • Last departure from Monte at 5:45pm Closed 1 Jan, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, 4 & 15 Aug and 25 Dec

5. Visit the hotel built by the most famous Madeiran, Christiano Ronaldo – Pestana CR7 Hotel

Things to do in Funchal Madeira - Pestana CR7 Hotel Rooftop pool

Bust of Cristiano Ronaldo at Funchal airport

Sports fans may already know that Madeira was the birthplace of soccer star Christiano Ronaldo. The island’s prodigal son didn’t forget his roots. Working with the Pestana Hotel Group , the appositely named CR7 is a stylish lifestyle hotel, fitted with an infinity pool, outdoor gym, jacuzzi, and rooftop bar.

The hotel also houses a museum and statue honoring the player who led Portugal to European glory in 2016. The museum celebrates the life and achievements of the six-time FIFA world player of the years. Soccer fans will appreciate it. For everyone else, I recommend the polished rooftop bar in the contemporary hotel, a more than agreeable spot to wait for returning soccer fans.

Miradouro Pico dos Barcelos

The commanding views are richly layered. You can see Funchal and its bay. In the distance are the romantically named Desertas Islands. Hidden in the houses of Pico below is Christian Ronaldo’s childhood home. Good luck trying to pick it out!

The miradouro is so popular that it was recently renovated to feature a picturesque garden that further sets this viewpoint apart. There is a café, souvenir shop, and pay-to-use toilets nearby.

Things to do in Funchal Madeira - Mercado dos Lavradores - Farmers' Market - Fruit stand

Inaugurated in 1940, the New State architecture building and attractively tiled façade add to the ambiance. Gastronomes will have a great time. But anyone will enjoy wandering through the loudly (some say overenthusiastically) managed stalls that display fruits unlike any in the supermarket back home.

The best alternative to hop-on, hop-off busses is the seemingly ubiquitous tuk-tuks. On this 5-star rated tour, not only will you see the sights of Funchal,  you’ll also stop at the fishing village of Camara de Lobos, head up to Cape Girão for sweeping views of the coastline, stroll around the botanical garden, and much more. 11. fireworks and poncha at the annual atlantic ocean festival.

Things to do in Funchal Madeira - Atlantic Ocean Festival in June - Fireworks

Happening every Saturday in June at the pier or Pontinha (small point) in Funchal, the luminous spectacular is best watched from the harbor. The show doesn’t start until 10.30 pm but get there early as the best spots disappear quickly. No need to pack snacks and drinks, local stands will keep you refreshed, especially with local favorites poncha and bolo do caco .

Live theatrical shows performed to energetic music take place at the harbour with the Atlantic ocean as a stunning backdrop.

12. Taste-test typical and traditional Madeiran food and drink

I can’t go on vacation and ignore the local culinary specialties. With influences from Portugal and across the Atlantic, allied to thriving homegrown gastronomy, there are some delectable delights to be found in the restaurants of Madeira. As I mentioned earlier, I highly recommend this popular food on foot tour. Hurry! This 5-star rated tour is likely to sell out.

If I had to pick just a few local favorites, below is a list of the ones I’d recommend you try.

Poncha (pronounced pohn-chah )

funchal travel guide

You’ll find poncha served at bars all over the island. Head to your newly discovered favorite for a flight of poncha (mixed flavors), and get ready to have a good evening. And perhaps a less enjoyable morning.

Bolo do caco

Things to do in Funchal Madeira - Bolo do Caco

Bolo do caco burger with fries

This ubiquitous bread (don’t be fooled by the name, ‘bolo’ means cake) is formed of sweet potatoes, in addition to typical bread ingredients of flour, yeast, water, and salt. It is shaped like a flatbread and baked to have a thin, crispy shell and soft crumb.

The totally Madeiran creation can be filled with octopus or steak, although often appears as a starter or side dish in restaurants. You can also find them served hot and drenched in aromatic garlic butter, usually at open-air events. The smell of garlic-drenched bolo do caco that never failed to get my mouth watering, even if I’d already eaten.

Espetada (pronounced is-pe-ta-duh )

Things to do in Funchal Madeira - Espetada

Bolo do Mel

Unlike bolo do caco , bolo do Mel is actually a cake. A sticky, moist honey cake that is believed to be the earliest dessert made on Madeira. Nuns from the Convent of Santa Clara in Funchal are credited with creating the recipe.

Oddly enough, the cake is typically made with honey today. However, earlier recipes were made with molasses, a consequence of Madeira’s history as a sugar producer. Early versions used spices imported from India, while contemporary versions are often stuffed with walnuts and almonds. One thing certainly hasn’t changed, the cake remains a sugary and singularly Madeiran delight.

If you’re from the UK and wondering how Madeira cake did not make the list, I’ve not overlooked it. Madeira cake is an entirely British confection, without even a hint of Madeiran wine.

Milho frito

Things to do in Funchal Madeira - Milho frito

Madeiran Wine

Things to do in Funchal Madeira - Poncha and Madeira wine price board

Over the centuries, the indigenous industry has perfected its techniques. Now you can enjoy dry aperitif wines and sweet dessert varieties. Look out for the different gradings, which start from Reserve (aged 5 years) and stretch to Vintage or Frasqueira (aged 19 years in cask plus one year in bottle.)

Don’t be persuaded by bottles marked ‘Finest,’ the lowest grade (aged 3 years) and reserved for cooking. Clearly, whoever thought up the grading system was aiming high.

Broas de Mel

Things to do in Funchal - Broas do Mel de Cana da Madeira

It’s not all about poncha and wine in Madeira. This locally brewed beer is a relative newcomer, having been introduced in 1969. Offering light, dark, and alcohol-free brews, the beer is popular throughout the island. The drink has even gained an international audience and is now exported to the UK, Australia, and Angola.

15 Best Things to Do in Funchal, Madeira Right Now

Are you planning to visit Madeira? Chances are you will visit Funchal, Madeira’s capital city and the main port, exploring what it has to offer. I’ve just returned from a fabulous week-long solo trip to Funchal and have put together this guide to help you plan either 24 hours in Funchal or two days or even a longer Funchal itinerary. The guide is packed with all the best things to do in Funchal Madeira , including travel tips that are helpful to know.

Street Art- Old Town Funchal, Madeira - 15 Best Things to Do in Funchal Right Now

I visited Funchal, pronounced “Fuun-chaal” , intending to use it just as a base to do the famous Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike along with exploring the island’s many scenic walking trails, natural pools and other outdoorsy adventures which Madeira is known for.

However, I was left with a warm appreciation for Funchal after having spent many days strolling through the city’s vibrant streets exploring its sights, feasting on the freshest seafood washed down with the richest and sweetest Madeira wine whilst also mingling with locals who were excited to share their fascinating culture and traditions.

Carnival - Funchal Madeira - 15 Best Things to Do in Funchal Right Now

One of the top things Funchal is known for and worth visiting in themselves are its popular festivals held all year round. The city’s festivals celebrate nearly everything from important religious events to some of the island’s famous products such as flowers and Madeira wine as well as music and dance.

Funchal - Carnival - Funchal Madeira Things to Do

I was lucky that my visit coincided with Funchal Carnival/Mardi Gras 2023 which made me fall in love with the city even more. I hope you appreciate Funchal as much as I did.

Let’s dive right in! Here is what to do in Funchal in Madeira

1. Take a Free Walking Tour of Funchal Old Town

Price : Tip Based (Offered in English and Spanish)

Start with a free guided walking tour of Funchal Old Town . I always recommend a walking tour as an introduction to a city as it’s an excellent way to orientate yourself and make exploring alone later on way easier.

Guides will share with you helpful tips which you won’t find in most guides, yes, and even here such as where and what to eat in Funchal and how much it should cost, where to shop for the best souvenirs, the best transport options and so much more.

Funchal Old Town - 15 Best Things to Do in Funchal Right Now

Since the walking tours are offered by locals, you’ll get to know the city’s fascinating insights and stories including wide local issues from a local’s perspective.

I took the Free Walking Tours Funchal and learned interesting history about Funchal and Madeira as a whole from its inception as Portugal’s first colony in the early 15th century having been discovered by the Portuguese sailor João Gonçalves Zarco to the present day as an autonomous region. All told in a fun and engaging manner.

Street Art Funcha- 15 Best Things to Do in Funchal Right Now

Since I was visiting Funchal alone, the walking tour also proved to be a nice way to meet and have fun with like-minded travellers.

2. Wander the Old Town of Funchal

The first port of call for most visitors to Funchal if exploring the city without a guide is to go for a wander in its Old Town or historic centre, known locally as Zona Velha .

Good to Know

The population of Funchal is just over 100,000, so it’s quite small. It’s a walkable city, especially around where most of its attractions are found. However, you’ll have to be content with steep hills once you start to move away from the city centre. Comfortable shoes and sun protection will come in handy, so prepare well.

3. Stop by the Sé Cathedral of Funchal

Price : Free

Sé Cathedral de Nossa Senhora da Assunção , also The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption, is a Roman Catholic church located right in the centre of Funchal Old Town. This church has stood at its site since the time Funchal was declared the capital of Madeira by Portugal’s King Manuel I during the late 15th century.

The three-nave Gothic-styled church has stood the test of time as it looks as good as new. Its facade is quite unassuming whilst the interior features a stunningly decorated Mudejar-styled wooden ceiling, a sophisticated altarpiece from the early 16th century, countless paintings and wooden craftworks.

This is a church not to miss in Funchal even if you aren’t religious as it’s charming. It’s small, so it will be a brief stop.

4. Marvel at the Street Art on Santa Maria Street

The Street art known as Art of Open Doors or Arte Portas Abertas , found on the doors of the buildings along Santa Maria Street is part of Funchal Municipality’s initiative aimed at revitalising this part of Funchal Old Town which had become notorious and disused.

Beautiful-Street-Art-Santa-Maria - 15 Best Things to Do in Funchal Right Now

The project has been hailed as a great success as it has become one of the most popular and unusual things to do in Funchal. Nearly every door on Santa Maria including adjacent streets is adorned with vivid and catchy paintings depicting mostly the lifestyle and cultural practices of the people who previously lived in the neighbourhood.

Both professionals such as the celebrated Madeiran artist Mark Milewski together with amateurs from all over the world have contributed to the project which gives the whole experience authenticity.

Santa Maria Maior , where Santa Maria Street is found, is the oldest neighbourhood in Funchal, so the area has a unique appeal in addition to its fascinating Street Art.

Most of the narrow stone streets in the area are in use as outdoor restaurants and bars making it one of the hubs for Funchal nightlife.

I found it more enjoyable to see the art in Santa Maria early in the day before the area became crowded with restaurant activities. However, don’t miss checking out the area at night as well. It’s a lovely place to hang out, awash with some of the best Funchal restaurants.

5. Explore Mercado dos Lavradores

Mercado dos Lavradores or the Farmers Market is Funchal’s central market, located in the Old Town and just around the corner from Santa Maria Street. The market is housed in an attractive two-storey building with a beautiful central courtyard. It’s a well-organised market with stalls that are grouped according to their offerings.

I’m told that Mercado dos Lavradores’ fruit and vegetable prices are inflated for the tourist market, however, I think you should certainly stop by, mainly to get a glimpse of what’s eaten on the island.

The cable car is popular probably due to the lovely views of Funchal and the sea which are to be enjoyed during the ride. Its station in Funchal centre is located along Avenida do Mar in the Old Town whilst the station in Monte is just around the corner from the garden’s entrance (Price €18 Return ). The ride takes about 15-20min each way.

Church of Our Lady of the Mount (Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte), the church at the centre of the village, has roots which go back to the 15th century though the current iteration was completed during the 19th century. It’s a small church but it’s full to the brim with attractive altars and religious paintings.

Our Lady of the Mount is said to house the remains of the last Emperor of Austria Charles I who died whilst in exile on the island, so if this interests you, then, don’t miss it.

11. Stop by Madeira Story Center

Price: €5 Adults, €3 Children

The Madeira Story Center is located in the Old Town in a historic building which was once a sugar cane factory. It’s a good place to visit to get to know the history and culture of Madeira.

The museum’s permanent exhibition focuses on the geography of the island, its history as a colony and the effects of immigration on the island. The exhibition aims to be interactive by presenting the information through audio guides, digital displays, video projections and various other media techniques.

It’s a small museum, but if you’ve got kids with you or you’re a history buff, you’ll definitely appreciate a visit to the Madeira Story Center. It’s also one of the best things to do in Funchal when it rains!

12. Check the CR7 Museum

Visiting the CR7 Museum (Christiano Ronaldo Museum) is a top must-do thing in Fuchal for fans of the soccer superstar. The museum is devoted to the life and career achievements of Ronaldo who was born in Funchal’s São Pedro neighbourhood.

Heading to Pico do Ariero to experience Madeira’s stunning sunrise or sunset is one of the most awesome things to do in Funchal which you shouldn’t miss.

Pico do Ariero is the third-highest peak in Madeira, so it affords gorgeous views as the sun rises or sets whilst lighting up in fascinating colours above the high and impressive Central Mountain Range of Madeira.

Sunrise Pico do Arieiro - 15 Best Things to Do in Funchal Right Now

How to Get to Pico do Ariero from Funchal

There are a few options to get to Pico do Ariero from Funchal. I visited Madeira with a rental car which made getting to Pico do Ariero super easy though the drive was steep and narrow in some areas, requiring extra caution.

  • Pico Transfers offers a reasonably priced pick-up and drop-off service around Funchal, so it’s worth checking out if you’ve no access to a private car.
  • Taxis are also ideal and reasonable but prior booking through the Bolt App is recommended.

NB – These transport options are also relevant if you plan to do the popular Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo hike . Pico do Arieiro stands at 1,818m, so prepare well for harsh weather regardless of whether you are visiting just for the sunrise/sunset or intend to do some hiking.

Funchal FAQ’s

What is the best time to visit madeira and funchal .

Madeira’s climate is classified as sub-tropical which means the island experiences sunny summers (June-Sept) and mild temperatures throughout the winter months (Dec-Feb) with some high levels of rain.

Different locations on the island tend to experience varied climates. However, the island’s southern coast where Funchal is located is privileged with some of the best weather on the island making it one of Madeira’s best all-year-round destinations.

How to Get Around Funchal?

As mentioned previously, it’s possible to get around Funchal Old Town on foot where most of the historical sites are located. However, other areas outside the centre tend to be hilly and steep which can be strenuous even for the fittest person.

While car hire isn’t necessary to explore Funchal centre, I’d highly recommend it if you plan to visit sights around Funchal’s outskirts and explore the island at length. Ribeira Brava , Camara de Lobos and Porto Moniz are other lovely places worth checking out when in Madeira.

Car hire companies are widely available at Funchal Madeira Airport. Rentalcars.com is a great platform for finding reasonably priced car hire options in Madeira.

What are the best places to stay in Funchal Portugal?

Choosing where to stay in Funchal depends on your budget, what you intend to focus on whilst in Funchal as well as the length of your stay. The Old Town area is ideal for short breaks and if you wish to explore Funchal’s historic sites and surrounding gardens. It’s also a great choice to use as a base to explore the rest of the island especially if you’ve access to a car.

The areas along the coast such as São Martinho are packed with hotels, resorts and apartments. They’re ideal for a longer stay and if you wish to be close to the beach and sea views.

Airbnb Funchal and Booking.com are great resources for finding Funchal hotels, hostels, and self-catering holiday homes and apartments for all budgets.

The Views Monumental , located on Estrada Monumental, Savoy Palace Funchal , The Cliff Bay Hotel , Reids Palace and Quinta Jardins do Lago in São Pedro are some of the highly-rated Funchal hotels on Booking.com worth giving a quick look.

funchal travel guide

Funchal is the capital and main city of the autonomous region of Madeira, on the island of Madeira , in its south between Santa Cruz and Câmara de Lobos. In 2021, it was home 106,000 people.

Understand [ edit ]

The name Funchal ( foon-SHAHL , /fũ.ˈʃaɫ/) comes from the abundance of fennel ( funcho ) found on the island. It was an important shipping centre during the 15th–17th centuries. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal.

Get in [ edit ]

By plane [ edit ].

There are several daily flights from most major cities in Portugal ( Lisbon , Porto ). Flight time from Lisbon is 1½ hours.

Also, there are good connections from London (mostly Gatwick , but also Heathrow ) with TAP/Air Portugal and British Airways; its flying time is estimated at 3½ hours.

By car [ edit ]

Funchal is served by highway ER101 which runs along the coast. An easy way to get to the city centre by car is to take exit 11 and head downhill towards Funchal. Continue on this road (ER103) until you pass under an overpass. Immediately on your right is a large parking garage (closed on Sundays). From here it is only a few minutes walk to Mercado Dos Lavradores / Sé Cathedral.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

The city centre is small enough to explore on foot. Orange city buses can take you around and up to Monte (lines 20, 21). Giro cards can be bought from the office for €2.20, which are pre-loaded with two journeys, and can be topped up with additional journeys for €1.50 each. A single ride costs €1.90 when bought from the bus driver. Most city buses start from the waterfront area. If you are lucky, you can acquire a bus timetable for the local and regional buses starting in Funchal at the tourist information office. Timetables and a map are also available .

By motorcycle and moped [ edit ]

Madeira as a small island is very convenient for exploring by riding motorcycles. Funchal is well connected with the rest of the island and there are a lot of hidden gems that could be discovered along the coast roads. Using a moped is a common practice around the island as it’s a lot more convenient. Finding a place to rent a scooter or motorcycle is not difficult and there are several companies, most of them are located within the town centre.

  • Rent a Scooter Madeira . Mostly smaller mopeds and motorcycles. They have a good variety of models and basic equipment is provided with each rental. Helmet provided for the main driver.
  • Riderly . Provide motorcycles for longer and shorter trips with all the driving equipment necessary, such as helmets and gloves.

The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park is a typical example of a manor in British colonial style. While the manor is private and can't be visited, you can enjoy the public park. On first sight it looks like an English park, with old Platanes forming a long alley from the main gate to the gardens. But when you look closer you see all the tropical plants that build the basis, completed by hundreds of plants from all over the world, so all year round there are plants blooming. The main part of the park is formed by several gardens: a French Garden, a Sunken Garden, the Ladies Garden, a Rose Garden and some more. Opposite the main gate is a Tea House, which is connected to the golf course. They serve some good tea, cakes, pastries, snacks and small lunches. The way back to the main gate is formed by the Camellia Avenue, a flourish firework between end October and March. The park is at 500 m altitude. 09:00-11:30 the park is often crowded by bus tourists, so choose the afternoon for a more laid-back visit. Entrance fee €10.50. Public buses frequently connect Funchal with the park: line 36 or, if you have strong nerves, line 37 for a more spectacular ride. ( updated Dec 2019 )

This historic building, with an open patio, offers, on two levels, fresh fruits and vegetables from all over the island. On the lower level is a separate hall where fish vendors sell fresh-caught fish. Eat and buy local fruits like the small Madeiran mangos, bananas, philodendres and plenty kinds of maracujas. Taste the offers from vendors. But be careful, as some may try to rip you off and sell you over-ripe fruit, or some heavy mangos for the (expensive) price of light maracujas. There are also some nice pastelarias and coffee bars in and around the building. These are often crowded when it's raining, and when large cruise ships are on the pier. ( updated Dec 2019 )

The island is world-famous for its wines. Several stores offer varying selections.

Eat [ edit ]

Funchal has an abundance of good, if not necessarily cheap, eating places. Most places serve traditional Madeiran and Portuguese food, which is well-prepared and tasty, but not terribly exciting. One of the most typical dishes and served almost everywhere, is espada com banana (scabbard fish with banana). It is usually served with fresh salad and potatoes. A bit more expensive is bacalhau (dried, salted codfish), which is also served in many restaurants. One of the more common and best varieties is "bacalhau com natas" (codfish in cream sauce).

  • Internet Access - There exist various free public Wi-Fi hotspots sponsored by the Madeiran government. One can find such locations by looking for blue and white boards with the Wi-Fi logo on them. A lot of bars and cafes offer Wi-Fi which is usually sponsored by an ISP called "Zon". These are usually password restricted but the owners are usually very friendly in providing them. One of the larger public squares called "Praca do Municipio", for instance, has free Wi-Fi. Other locations include Avenida Arriaga (2 x around the Golden Gate Café and the Cathedrale) and Praca de Colombo.
  • Post Office - Stamps are rarely available at vendors selling postcards. There is a post office (CTT Correios) near the cathedral in the Avenida Zarco and the Rua Calouste Gulbekian, near the Casino. Postcards to EU countries are €0.72 (June 2015).

Portugal City Travel Guide: Funchal, Madeira

Funchal is the largest town on Madeira.

Funchal , meaning "fennel" in Portuguese is the largest town and capital of Madeira . With a population of around 111,000, Funchal is the sixth largest Portuguese city.

Lying in a natural amphitheater by the sea, squeezed between cliffs and the 1,000 meter high mountains behind, the city is the main place to stay, eat and drink and generally have fun on the island.

Located on the southern coast, the town is the also the major transport hub for getting around the rest of this beautiful island.

Downtown Funchal, Madeira.

Funchal Attractions

The lively capital of Funchal reflects much of Madeira's rich history dating back to its founding in 1424. The main black and white paved square Praça do Município is flanked by many fine buildings including the eighteenth century Câmara Municipal (Town Hall) and the Museu de Arte Sacra (Museum of Sacred Art). The museum has a collection of Flemish art from the 15-16th centuries, collected during the island's profitable sugar trade with mainland Europe.

Historic churches in Funchal include the Capela do Corpo Santo , dedicated to São Pedro Gonçalves Telmo (1190-1246), the patron saint of seafarers and fisher-folk, Santa Clara, Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte , the Igreja Inglesa and the Santa Catarina Chapel in Santa Catarina Park (Parque de Santa Catarina).

Other places of interest in Funchal are the Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmer's Market) - a bustling scene of exotic flowers, fresh fish and local vegetables. Come early in the morning to experience the market at its best.

Blandy's wine lodge is a Madeiran institution and often a must-see sight for tourists, especially Brits, on their holidays on the Portuguese island.

The Blandys are the last remaining family of all the original businesses of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their own wine company to this day. The Blandy business began in 1811 and the family have a reputation as modernizers who have been able to keep pace with the ups and downs of the Madeira wine business over the last two centuries and thus remain in control of their original enterprise - making fine Madeira wines. Guided tours of the wine lodge in various languages are available from Monday to Saturday. The tours end with a wine tasting.

Funchal is the largest town on Madeira.

The Jardim Botânico (Botanical Garden) on Caminho do Meio and the Museum of Contemporary Art in São Tiago Fort are two other of Funchal's must-sees.

The garden was formerly the Bom Sucesso Estate owned by the Reid family (of Reid's Palace Hotel fame). It is now administered by the Regional Government of Madeira and opened in 1960. There are several separate parts to the garden. These include an area dedicated to indigenous and endemic plants from not only Madeira but also the Azores , the Canary Islands and Cape Verde. Loiro Park within the garden is an aviary with exotic cockatoos, parrots and parakeets.

Funchal and Madeira as a whole have many other fine gardens and parks . These include Monte Palace Tropical Garden , the Orchid Garden (Jardim Orquidea), Quinta Palmeira, Quinta Magnólia, Quinta Vigia and Palheiro Gardens.

Funchal Cathedral, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal.

History enthusiasts head for the 16th century Sé (Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption) and the Museu de Fotografia Vicentes at 43 Rua da Carreira, Funchal with a fascinating collection of old photographs of life on Madeira. Football fans make for the CR7 Museum near the marina - hagiographic homage to Cristiano Ronaldo , Madeira's sacred, sporting son made good.

The Quinta das Cruzes , once owned by a rich wine shipping family is full of works of art and priceless antiques. Santa Catarina Park  lies between Avenida do Infante and Avenida Sá Carneiro and offers great views over Funchal. The park boasts large lawns, flower beds full of sub-tropical plants and statues of both Columbus and Henry the Navigator . The relaxing Jardim Municipal do Funchal opposite Blandy's is also worth a visit.

Driving north or travelling on the cable car from Funchal is the hill resort of Monte , which is often compared to Sintra near Lisbon on account of its fine quintas (palaces), churches, gardens and scenic hill-top location. The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is a favourite destination along with the Church of Nossa Senhora do Monte .

Monte Palace Tropical Garden, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal.

The Monte Palace Tropical Garden is on several levels and includes ponds and cascades, exotic trees and plants as well as a mineral museum. The garden was established by the businessman and art collector José Berardo (who also founded the excellent Berardo Collection Museum in the  Centro Cultural de Belém in  Lisbon ). The garden includes two authentic Oriental gardens, one Chinese and one Japanese with references to the Age of Discovery that took Portuguese adventurers to both countries.

It is possible to return to Funchal on a unique form of transport - a wickerwork sledge ( carro de cesto ) on wooden runners pushed by two carreiros , or sledge drivers.

ArT of opEN doors project in Rua de Santa Maria.

Tea at Reid's Hotel overlooking Funchal Bay is a step back in history to savour the traditions of the British aristocracy, who flocked to the island in the 19th century for its mild climate and stayed to foster Madeira's cottage industries of cane furniture, embroidery ( bordados ) and malmsey wine production.

Other famous Brits who have spent time here include former Prime Minsters Sir Winston Churchill who wrote volume four of his memoirs The Hinge of Fate at Reid's and Margaret Thatcher who honeymooned on Madeira at the Savoy Hotel . Captain Cook on The Endeavour in 1768 and George Bernard Shaw to learn to dance were also visitors.

The British are also particularly associated with Madeira wines , which were drunk throughout the old colonies as their taste improved with long sea journeys. Names such as Blandy, Cossart and Gordon are synonymous with the wine and it is possible to visit the wine lodges of D'Oliveiras in Rua dos Ferreiros, Henriques & Henriques in Camaro de Lobos and Blandy's in the Adegas de Sao Francisco (Avenida Arriaga, 28).

Funchal has a good variety of both local and international restaurants with seafood often a specialty. Espada (scabbard fish) served with bananas should be on visitors' menus. Bolo de caco is a type of local bread made from sweet potatoes.

The island is an exotic fruit lover's paradise: delicious bananas, blueberries, cactus figs, cherries, custard apples, grapes, passion fruit, pears and watermelons are all readily available in season.

Some recommended restaurants are the two Michelin-starred Il Gallo d'Oro (reservations essential) within The Cliff Bay Hotel, William with one Michelin star in Reid's Hotel and Restaurante Gavião Novo on Rua de Santa Maria, known for its excellent locally-caught seafood.

Also well worth visiting are Dona Amelia at Rùa Imperatriz D Amelia 83, the arty Dona Joana Rabo-de-Peixe and Indian Palace Restaurant for quality Indian food.

Yet more options in the medium price range are Hoyo Hoyo Sabores de Moçambique , Kampo by Chef Julio Pereira and O Americano on Rua da Carreira.

Funchal has a good variety of bars which tend to get lively at the weekends. Cafe do Teatro (next to Municipal Theatre) is well-known. Also sample poncha, a very sweet local alcoholic drink made from sugar cane, orange or lemon juice and mixed with honey. Similar to "punch" in English and claimed to cure the common cold.

Some great bars in town include 23 Vintage on Rua de Santa Maria, Venda Velha for poncha and Living Room on Largo dos Varadouros which is bar, micro club and art space all in one funky venue.

Rua de Santa Maria is a lively street lined with many restaurants and bars plus some notable street art.

The island of Porto Santo (14 km by 5 km) reached by plane or ferry from Madeira is in stark contrast to its mountainous and lush neighbour 50 km to the south west.

The island has little natural vegetation but does have in abundance the golden sandy beaches which Madeira lacks - a 9 km long stretch to be precise on the south of the island.

The capital Vila Baleira has a museum celebrating Christopher Columbus, who came to the island in 1478 and later married Felipa Moniz Perestrelo, the governor's daughter. There is a scenic look-out point at Portela but the island's main attractions are its tranquility and crystal clear waters.

Funchal to Porto Santo Ferries

Ferries connect Funchal to the smaller island of Porto Santo. The crossing takes about 2 hours, 15 minutes. The ferry is operated by Porto Santo Line .

The more remote northern side of the island has some interesting villages including Porto Moniz to the west and Santana to the east - famous for its picturesque thatched cottages - palheiros . Porto Moniz is known for its natural swimming pools formed by volcanic lava and filled with Atlantic sea water. There is a safe area here reserved for kids.

"Madeira" means "wood" in Portuguese and the laurisilva forest that remains on the northern hills of Madeira once covered the whole island as well as The Azores and the Canary Islands, and was, at one time, widespread in Europe. Laurisilva forest, made up of laurel-leaved, evergreen hardwoods, supports a rich plant and animal diversity including bryophytes, ferns and flowering plants and the endemic Madeiran long-toed pigeon. The forest was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.

A wide variety of leisure activities are available on the island including 45 holes of golf at Madeira's two courses: Santo da Serra Golf Club and Palheiro Golf Club as well as a casino, sailing, fishing, diving, walking and bird-watching.

Whale and dolphin watching is another popular activity on Madeira with a number of companies organizing boat tours where visitors have over a 90% chance of seeing either dolphins or whales year round.

Included on bus tours of the island is a trip to the highest skywalk at Cabo Girão .

Ilhas Desertas

16 km south east of Madeira are the uninhabited islands of Deserta Grande and Bugio which are now a nature reserve for the islands' birds, seals and poisonous spiders. Boats trips to visit the islands can be made in Funchal. 215 km (135 miles) south of Madeira are yet more deserted islands - the Ilhas Selvagens (Savage Islands) which remain a nature reserve of interest to scientists for their colonies of marine birds.

Cristiano Ronaldo , presently playing in Saudi Arabia after leaving Manchester United following successful spells at Juventus, Real Madrid and Manchester United (again), was born on the island of Madeira and is the island's favourite son. Funchal Airport is now named after him and once had a rather unflattering statue of Cristiano (now replaced by a new version). The CR7 Museum (Museu CR7) displays Ronaldo's trophies won through his glittering career as a footballer for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. The floor of the museum is done in traditional calçada , pavement style. Above the museum is the recommended four star Pestana CR7 Funchal .

Funchal which includes night scenes and a coastal town

Visit Funchal

With houses built on the side of a hill, an attractive bay and a mountainous backdrop, Funchal has one of Portugal’s most beautiful settings. The coastal city is the capital of the island of Madeira and combines a modern beach resort with hundreds of years of history. Surf, tour ancient buildings and sail the ocean to see whales and dolphins.

The town is named for the bright yellow fennel (funcho in Portuguese) that grew here when the Portuguese settled the area in the early 15th century.

Funchal’s natural beauty isn’t confined to the coast and surrounding mountains. Spend a few hours in the sunken, rose and French gardens of Jardins de Palheiro. Stroll through Jardim Orquidea’s miniature jungle filled with varied orchid species. Enjoy thousands of blooms at the Madeira Botanical Gardens.

Explore the historic buildings of the old town area. Admire the stained-glass windows, baroque altars and gothic arches of the 16th-century Sé Cathedral. Amble along cobblestone streets lined by old buildings, some dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Visit the Museo Municipal for its natural history exhibits. Gaze at the collection of Turkish and North African decorative tiles at the Frederico de Freitas Museum.

Ride the cable car up to Monte, a small village 1,804 feet (550 meters) above sea level. When you want to come back down to Funchal, ride a toboggan. These resemble large wicker baskets and are pushed down the steep roads by drivers.

Walk along the promenade from the city center to the Praia Formosa, a collection of beaches. Venture farther out to sea on a dolphin- and whale-watching trip or take a boat cruise along the coast.

As Madeira’s capital city, Funchal has good transportation links. Madeira Airport is 13 miles (21 kilometers) away. With Funchal’s mild subtropical climate, its beaches, gardens and historic sites can be enjoyed year-round.

Top 5 Reasons to Visit Funchal

1. a wealth of historic architecture.

Madeira grew rich on sugar, wine and shipping, and it has splendid architecture to prove it. Highlights include the São Lourenço Palace and the 16th century Sé Cathedral, but the whole town is beautiful.

2. Enjoy Some Madeira Wine

A delicious fortified wine, Madeira is the perfect way to round off a vacation meal. Try it at leading wine bars like Blandy's or Beef and Wines.

3. It's a Great Place for Active Vacations

With plenty of nearby golf courses, the chance to paraglide over the valleys, canoe hire from the harbor and mountain biking trails across the island, Madeira is a wonderful destination for energetic travelers.

4. Excellent Art Galleries

Funchal may not be Paris or Venice, but galleries like the Museu de Arte Contemporânea and the Museu de Arte Sacra hold magnificent collections that were acquired by the island's sugar and wine families.

5. Stunning Beaches Not Far Away

Barreirinha, with its saltwater pool, city beaches like Ponta Gorda - with safe swimming for kids - and more distant resorts like Porto Santo make Funchal a fine beach destination.

What to do in Funchal

1. botanical garden: one of portugal's finest.

Madeira's sub-tropical climate makes for a fantastic garden where lush and vibrant plants that are typically only found in greenhouses can grow right in the open. The garden hosts plants from around the world, with stunning displays of color on view almost every month of the year. There are 35,000 square meters of space in the gardens, which boast mountain views as well as a unique collection of rare and endangered plants indigenous to these islands. Over 2,500 different plant species can be found in the Botanical Garden, which also hosts 300 birds.

2. Madeira Story Centre Museum: Step Into Madeira's Past

A relatively new addition to the island's collection of museums, the Story Centre is perhaps the best place to learn about the history of the island. Its artifacts begins far back in the land's volcanic origins and proceeds through its history as a target for pirate raids and on into the present. A number of vibrant illustrations and models depicting the people who left their mark on Madeira make this museum engaging and educational for the whole family.

3. Teleférico do Funchal: The Best View in the City

When most people think of public transport, they don't consider a cable car. Yet that's exactly how residents and visitors of Funchal make their way from the lower section of the city to the highland suburb of Monte. The cable car is a relatively recent addition to Funchal, but it's already left its mark on the inhabitants and visitors. The cable car line is more than half a mile long, with an elevation gain of well over 1,500 feet. During busy season, more than 800 passengers ride in the car each hour. It's one of the highest-rated attractions in Funchal and offers fun for the whole family.

4. Mercado dos Lavradores: An Authentic Workers' Market

The Farmer's, or Worker's, Market was unveiled in 1940 as an architectural masterpiece in the New State style, but when you visit, you'll probably spend your time admiring the wares of the vendors more than the architecture. From fresh fruit and vegetables to unique handicrafts, the market has plenty for visitors to enjoy. If you stay in a hotel or apartment with a kitchen, this is the place to go for fresh fish and other local ingredients.

5. Quinta das Cruzes Museum: One of Madeira's First Museums

This manor museum houses the extensive sliver, filigree, and antiques collection of wealthy collector César Gomes, as well as those of the Czech John Wetzler. Together, these residents compiled impressive stores of porcelain, handcrafted furniture, pottery, marble, and Christian iconography. Even the grounds of the museum are historic, as they housed the first Donee Generals of the islands. Step outside and wander through the archaeological gardens and you won't be let down. The entire property is chock-full of rare and beautiful items from Madeira's rich history.

Introducing Funchal

About funchal, funchal travel guide.

It is often called 'God's Floating Garden', reflecting the wonderful flora to be found here. Madeira is also famous for its beautiful and extensive network of levada walks which follow, on gentle gradients, irrigation channels. Funchal is the island capital and is easily the liveliest and most interesting place on Madeira, home to the best hotels, restaurants and nightlife. Despite its numerous visitor attractions it still maintains a vibrant local life of its own. Madeira is a spectacularly beautiful island, lush with vineyards and rich farmland, pitted with valleys, topped by spectacular peaks and with a coastline of sheer cliffs.

Sightseeing:

Funchal enjoys a magnificent setting on the Bay of Funchal, rising up from the sea in a natural amphitheatre, and the perfect way of arriving is by cruise ship. Coaches will whisk you right around the island though there is more than enough to do and see in and around Funchal. The city centre is gratifyingly small, and its narrow cobbled streets host a splendid market, some intriguing little museums, shops and cafes, a salty old port area, and can easily be covered on foot. There are fine gardens to enjoy, even in the town centre, but a 5-10 minute taxi ride will take you to the island's finest quintas (estates) and gardens. Highlights • Funchal: The Mercado dos Lavradores, a very colourful market of fresh produce and handicrafts; the 15th-century catedral; Quinta das Cruzes; the Adegas São Francisco wine cellars and museum. • Glorious Gardens on the outskirts of Funchal include Jardim Botânico, Quinta da Boa Vista, Palheiro (Blandy) Gardens and Monte Palace Tropical Gardens (reached by cable car from Funchal centre). • Further afield: Camacha (heart of the wickerwork industry), Câmara de Lobos (a picturesque fishing port), Cabo Girão (one of the highest sea cliffs in the world, São Vicente (the prettiest village on the island).

Unquestionably, one of the most stunning hikes on Madeira is the PR1 trail from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo, the highest point on the island. Walk along narrow paths on sheer ridges, down mountain staircases, and through rocky tunnels, soaking up some of the most spectacular views. Once you summit above the clouds, it really feels as if you’re on top of the world! Discover everything you need to know about doing the Pico do Arieiro hike in Madeira, Portugal .

Pico do Arieiro Hike (PR1)

With endless views over steep Jurassic valleys, lush greenery, and the Atlantic Ocean, it’s safe to say the Pico do Arieiro hike on Madeira is one of the best things to do on the island.

pico do arieiro to pico ruivo hike madeira

Whether you start out early or catch the breathtaking panoramic vistas during sunset, nothing tops watching the clouds sweep in between the towering mountains. This is by far one of the most beautiful things we’ve ever done!

Pico do Arieiro Hike on Madeira: How to visit PR1

Madeira, in general, is famous for its stunning natural landscapes, from the lush forests to rugged mountains and scenic coastlines. All the major hikes in between have a PR number, with the PR1 ‘Pico to Pico’ hike being by far the most famous.

hiking trail pico do arieiro to pico ruivo madeira

Officially, this is an in-and-out trail, meaning you walk to Pico Ruivo and back, but you also have the option to book transportation for a one-way tour . Details:

  • Total km: 13 km roundtrip or 7 km one-way
  • Time: 4 – 7 hours
  • Elevation: 900 meters
  • Difficulty: Hard
  • Entrance: Free to visit, no tickets.

The Hiking Trail of Pico do Arieiro, Madeira

This 13-kilometer route (or 6,5 one-way) takes you along some of the most impressive vistas on the island, winding its way from Pico do Arieiro through lush valleys and past jagged mountain peaks up to Pico Ruivo and back.

pico do arieiro madeira best hike

The real showstopper, however, is when the area fills with a thick sea of clouds, creating an almost fantasy-like atmosphere. While you climb above 1,500m (4900 feet), witness the sun breaking through the fog, coloring the pathway – this is a must-see on your Madeira itinerary!

Tip: There are no toilets along the way, so make sure to use the ones at Pico do Arieiro before starting your hike.

hike madeira pico do arieiro to pico ruivo

Note: There is an observation deck at Pico do Arieiro that many people visit for the view (at Miradouro Juncal). You’ll also notice many tours here during sunrise. However, most are here just to soak up the ocean views; not everyone actually hikes the trail.

Mirador do Ninho da Manta

Once you start the hike, the first official viewpoint is Miradouro do Ninho da Manta (also known as ‘Buzzard’s Nest’). You’ll find this little balcony section after walking along well-maintained stone steps that lead down into the valley.

sunrise hike pico do arieiro madeira

This point looks out over the green scenery, with the ocean in the background. It’s only 1.2 kilometers down the trail and is a great place to snap some photos.

Tip: Many people who gather at Miradouro Juncal don’t make it this way, so if you come for sunrise, we personally recommend watching the sunrise from there to skip some crowds.

Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo

Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo are two of the highest peaks in Madeira, with the Ruivo Peak being the highest. The PR1 trail continues from the miradouro over ledges, through tunnels (five in total), and eventually wraps up around the mountain. Most of the trail toward Ruivo is actually downhill, but you’ll have jaw-dropping sights all along the route.

mountain hike madeira

Pass Pedra Rija, an open area and a great spot to stop for a minute, and notice all the flowers lining the trail. You might also spot little red-legged partridges native to Madeira (please don’t feed them).

The tunnels you pass are all relatively short (the longest one is about 150 meters), but it’s recommended to bring a headlamp for these sections. All along the route, you’ll find signs pointing toward the endpoint: Pico Ruivo.

Note: Though challenging, the sections with a steep drop or along mountain ledges always have railings on the side!

How Long is the Pico do Arieiro Hike?

The Pico do Arieiro hike in Madeira typically takes about 3-4 hours if you’re continuously walking. However, it can quickly extend to 5-7 hours if you prefer a more leisurely pace and more stops to sit, relax, and soak up the views over the island and ocean.

sunrise view madeira

As it’s an in-and-out trail, the route doesn’t loop; it goes from peak to peak with significant elevation changes (a total of 900m elevation gain). Depending on your fitness level, this can take some time.

Tip: If you don’t feel like hiking the entire route to Pico Ruivo but still want to witness those incredible views, walk from Pico do Arieiro to the viewpoint ‘Miradouro do Ninho da Manta’ (40 minutes). Here, you have a viewing platform looking over the incredible valleys.

Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo One-way or Round Trip?

Depending on your stamina and how you’ve arranged your transportation, you can choose between a one-way or round-trip hike on the PR1 trail from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. The round-trip option is more challenging as you’ll have to walk the same route back to the starting point, mostly uphill.

Alternatively, for those seeking a less strenuous option, numerous transfer services are available to drop you off at the trailhead and pick you up from Achadas Teixeira (close to Pico Ruivo). This way, you can do the ‘Pico to Pico’ hike one way.

The Best Time to Hike Pico do Arieiro

This hike is one of the best things to do in Madeira , and it’s very popular to start walking before sunrise. It rarely gets cold in Madeira, with an average temperature of 20 – 25 degrees Celsius year-round. However, remember that temperatures are much lower in the mountains due to their higher elevation. During our visit in April, it was 20 degrees in Funchal and 5 degrees at Pico do Arieiro.

Tip: Wear layers on your hike, as the weather can be unpredictable here. It can be very cold, warm, windy, cloudy, or clear. Therefore, it’s worth checking the Pico do Arieiro webcam or Windy.com to see what the weather is like.

Hiking During Sunrise or Sunset?

The PR1 hike is both stunning at sunrise and sunset, and each has its charm. Watch as the sunrise slowly pops above the horizon, shining through the morning fog that drifts around the mountains. If you want to visit during this time, make sure to arrive at your viewpoint of choice 30 minutes before the sun comes up.

The downside of the sunset hikes is that if you plan on doing an organized tour, this is not an option at the time of writing. Only sunrise tours are offered at this moment.

madeira pr1 hike pico do arieiro to pico ruivo

We did the PR1 hike both at sunrise and sunset. Although both are equally gorgeous, hiking later in the day is slightly more peaceful than early in the morning, with hikers more spread across the trail. We recommend starting about 6 hours before sundown to catch the best soft golden glow if you visit during this time.

From the lower parking, walk up to the trailhead (2 minutes) via a little path instead of the road for safety. You’ll notice a wooden sign on the opposite side of the road that reads ‘Pico do Arieiro 800m’.

All parking is free, so come early. When you arrive later in the morning (after 10 AM), chances are higher you’ll have to park further down the road and walk longer.

By Organized Tour or Transfer

If you don’t have your own transportation, there are a few other options besides hopping in a taxi. If you’d like to do a guided day hike, you can book a tour with a guide .

Alternatively, book a one-way transfer if you plan on hiking only one way. This way, you’ll be dropped off at the trailhead from Funchal and picked up again once you reach the other peak (Pico Ruivo).
