Luxury Travel to Dubrovnik

Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white

Glimmering on the Adriatic coast, enchanting Dubrovnik is Croatia ’s most up-market destination. Lauded by George Bernard Shaw as “Paradise on Earth”, the city delights with its Mediterranean-style culture and the marbled streets of its UNESCO World Heritage old town.

As one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities in the world, Dubrovnik’s old town is surrounded by sturdy fortifications that stretch for almost two kilometres, punctuated by two monumental arched gates and frequent turrets and towers. Inside you’ll discover pedestrianised cobbled streets lined by Renaissance buildings which open onto aristocratic squares featuring elegant Baroque churches. Stroll down the main street, Stradun, and you’ll be greeted with countless cafes and restaurants, each perfect for a coffee and a spell of people watching.

Thanks to its position on the Dalmatian Coast, Dubrovnik also boasts many beaches where you can pleasantly pass a day sunbathing and taking a dip in the pristine and calm Adriatic. While you’re here, it goes without saying that you can look forward to dining on the freshest of seafood. Venture out into Dubrovnik’s Bay, and you’ll encounter the 72-hectare wooded island of Lokrum where according to legend, Richard the Lionheart was cast ashore after being shipwrecked.

May to October is an ideal time to visit with sunny days and warm waters. July and August can be very busy. Visit in summer for the annual Dubrovnik Summer Festival, a 45-day-long cultural event with live plays, concerts, and games. Winters can be quiet and January is best avoided with many hotels, restaurants, and shops closed for the month. February 3 is St. Blaise's Day, Dubrovnik's patron saint. The city celebrates with parades and festivities, although the rest of spring can be quiet until Easter.

  • Walk along the old city's walls
  • Relax on beautiful beaches
  • Admire Renaissance buildings such as Sponza Palace, the Rector's Palace, St. Saviour Church, and the Franciscan Church and Monastery
  • Swim in the azure Adriatic Sea
  • Take the cable car up to Mount Srd
  • Visit the world's oldest arboretum and the third oldest European pharmacy
  • Take a tour of the wooded island of Lokrum

“The pearl of the Adriatic” as the city is described, Dubrovnik, offers a great mix of history, sun and sea making it a popular tourist destination. Thanks to its location between the towering Dinaric Alps and the Adriatic Sea, the city has an incredible scenery that just needs to be seen with your own eyes. There are plenty of gems and spots to discover and the visitors are spoiled with choices all year round. Start you day by exploring the town’s history and walk around the city walls and the Old Town, no visit to Dubrovnik would be complete without these two spectacular attractions. If you want to cool down, head over to one of the beaches with crystal clear sea and within easy reach. Alternatively, why not take a water taxi to one of the islands around Dubrovnik and enjoy gorgeous beaches, lush vegetation and the relaxed vibe. Either way, you will find endless things to do, so you better start planning.

Game of Thrones Walking Tour of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is full of good restaurants and the small streets inside the Old Town are packed with them. The culinary standards are generally quite high and the choice of food is typically Croatian, as seafood dishes do have a very high priority. The Dalmatian ham is of course also one of the delights and an absolute ‘must taste’ starter dish. The restaurants are open until 11pm or midnight unless otherwise stated.

Nautika

The Old Town is full of comfortable and friendly cafes. Both indoor and outdoor cafés are nestled in the streets of Stradun, providing lovely surroundings in which to watch the daily life.

Dubravka 1836 Restaurant & Cafe

Bars & Nightlife

Dubrovnik’s nightlife takes place outdoors for much of the year. The area behind the Cathedral, Buniceva poljana, becomes one big outdoor bar in the spring and summer. The locals tend to hang out in the area between the Old Town and Gruz, where a strip of flashy bars have turned "bana Jelacica" into what the locals call "Bourbon Street". The nightlife in Dubrovnik is mainly in the Old Town. The town does not have that many nightclubs and the Stradun is the place to be at night. All the shop canopies roll back and the chairs come out transforming the street into a processional of exuberance!

Banje Beach Nightclub

There are no large-scale shopping centres in Dubrovnik, so target your shopping passions in and around the Old Town. In the Old Town on the main street Stradun, you will find a row of small number of independent stores where local artisans, designers and producers sell their products. It is also in the Old Town several souvenir shops including more luxurious stores are selling jewelleries, gems and clothes. Croatian speciality like olive oil, honey, herb-flavoured rakijas and wine are also easy to get in the area. For more interesting souvenirs to bring back home, head over to the picturesque side streets in the Old Town. Dubrovnik also has some fine outdoor markets which are well worth a visit. You can buy fresh vegetables, fruit, olive oils, souvenirs and pretty much everything else you could possibly need.

tailored travel dubrovnik

Day 1: Arrival at Dubrovnik

Arrival day. Pick up at the airport and check in to hotel.

Day 2: King’s Landing – Dubrovnik

Welcome to the legendary City of Dubrovnik. For most of its history, a republic of its own and a beacon of diplomacy, Dubrovnik’s independent spirit is as strong as ever. You already know this city, for this is King’s Landing, a host to the revelries of Robert Baratheon, the excess lifestyle of Prince Joffrey, and the cunning wit of Tyrion Lannister.

Walk onto Red Keep, here known as Lovrijenac Fortress. Follow the trails of Arya Stark, and see where Danaerys, the Queen of Dragons, gave freedom to her fire-breathing flying creatures.

Only a few hundred meters off the coast of lies the green and lush island of Lokrum, which is only 10 minutes by boat from the old port. The fortress is on the highest point of the island with an amazing view over the protected national park. In series, Lokrum was turned into Qarth, the 'Queen of Cities' on the continent of Essos, and the setting for much of Daenerys' story in season two.

Day 3: Arboretum Trsteno, Ston, Blue and Green secrets of Imotski

Following Daenerys on her path to Meereen, where she seeks revenge upon the vicious slave-owners for crucifying hundreds of slave-children, you will walk through the palace gardens of King’s Landing, where gossip and intrigue foreshadowed battles, a place known in our world as Arboretum Trsteno. This luscious combination of green plant-life and superb architecture of yesteryear tells tails of royalty, and is the oldest arboretum in this part of Europe.

The Walls of Ston, a 3.5 miles long defensive construction dating back to the 14th century, was also part of King’s Landing. Ston is a Dalmatian town you will fall in love with, and as playwright George Bernard Show once said, ‘There is no love sincerer than the love of food’ -  an appropriate quote, because Ston is known as the home of one of the rarest, most delicious breed of oysters.

Then the road will take us to the town of Imotski. You’ll travel to a place where fantasy does indeed meet reality, as you’re introduced to the natural wonders of the Red and Blue Lake. Red, like the blood of the fallen, and Blue, like the royal attire of Daenerys, both too deep for your imagination.

In Imotski we will also visit a vinery, get a snack lunch and on the end of the tour, treat ourselves with a wonderful traditional dinner.

Day 4: Hvar, Pakleni islands, Vis, Blue and Green cave

On her conquest of Slaver’s Bay, as shocked and angered as Daenerys was upon witnessing hundreds of crucified slave-children – the evil doing of the Meereen slave owners – she couldn’t help but pause and take comfort in the magnificent seaside view that was laid in front of her. The Islands and the sea gave her comfort and rest.

Meet the sunniest place in Europe, the lovely Island of Hvar, a peaceful retreat or perhaps Slaver’s Bay? The island’s capitol is an ancient town of the same name, rich with history and a thriving art scene. Hell’s Islands, or ‘Paklenjaci’ is a group of small picturesque islands just outside of Hvar, and a destination easily reachable by speed boat. Many have found peace and seclusion on Hell’s Islands, as they are home to charming taverns and small family hotels. Time moves slowly here.

Moving on with your nautical journey, you will arrive on the Island of Vis – raw, isolated from the mainland, charismatic and beautiful. Your tour of Vis wouldn’t be complete without visiting a tiny nearby island called Bišev.  Illuminated by both the Sun and the Moon, the inside of the cave glows with an incredible aquamarine light.

Day 5: Šibenik - The New Throne, Krka National Park

We welcome you to the New Throne, so to say, the City of Šibenik, whose fortified walls and ancient architecture are yet to be seen in the fifth season of the Game of Thrones. Šibenik is known as The King’s City, for it was the court of Croatian King Krešimir the 4th in the 11th century, and now you’ll witness it fusing with the world of the Game of Thrones. In GoT world, Šibenik and its fortresses are most probably to represent Braavos, the greatest and most powerful of the Free Cities. Move away from the city and return to nature, as we welcome you to Krka National Park, the backdrop to numerous nature scenes in the show’s fourth season. It is a breathtaking place, and its cascading waterfalls will leave you mesmerized and refreshed, as you swoon into the greens of its flora and the blues of its crystal clear water. We’ll finish the day with a dinner in a beautiful, picturesque agro tourism state where you’ll enjoy both the ambient as well as a delicious homemade meal and taste unique sort of wine.

Day 6: Meereen – Split / Klis

Follow the path of Daenerys as she seeks to conquer Slaver’s Bay and free the slaves of Meereen. The 1700-year-old Mediterranean metropolis of Split transofrms into Meereen, as you start the final chapter of your tour at Diocletian’s Palace, its ancient basements and narrow streets, where freed slaves sought revenge upon their masters. Travel to the suburbs, to the town of Žrnovnica, whose green mill was used for Missandei’s bathing scene – the perfect spot to rest with a small snack  – and then continue to the town’s quarry, where the Unsullied battled for Daenerys.

Finally, walk the path to the top of Klis Fortress, as it transforms into the Meereen throne, where Daenerys set the slaves free and crucified their wicked owners.

At the end of the tour you will enjoy an authentic Game of Thrones dinner.

Dubrovnik

Visit Dubrovnik, Croatia

  • Accommodation
  • Things to do

Renowned for the beauty of its old town, Dubrovnik was once a powerful independent city-state and remains one of the best-preserved walled towns in Europe. Baroque churches sit on grand squares, shuttered townhouses line limestone streets, and vibrant bougainvillea cascades down steep, narrow lanes that lead to the azure waters of the Adriatic. Today, Dubrovnik stretches well beyond the city walls in a series of suburbs that line the coast and offer a quieter place to relax, swim and soak up the sun than the café and restaurant-lined streets of the old town.

There are other medieval walled cities in Europe, but nothing quite like Dubrovnik. To get away from the crowds drawn here by Game of Thrones , I suggest a sunset walk on the walls, which will afford you views of the whole city as well as the sea.

Things to see and do in Dubrovnik

City walls and fort lovrijenac.

One of the first things you might like to do on arrival in Dubrovnik is to walk the 9th-century city walls for sweeping views of the old town and the seafront. Tell-tale new roof tiles reveal just how much of the city had to be rebuilt after the Croatian War of Independence, while the 15 forts added in the 14th century demonstrate just how long the city has defended itself from attack.

The most impressive of these fortifications is Fort Lovrijenac (Fort Lawrence) which sits on an outcrop of rock guarding the western approach to the city. You may also know it as the Red Keep from the TV series Game of Thrones.

Old town rooftops, Dubrovnik

The Cathedral of the Assumption is best known for its polyptych by Titian behind the main altar and for its treasury which contains the relics of Saint Blaise. Also worth a visit is the Gothic-Renaissance Rector’s Palace, now home to a cultural history museum, and the Franciscan monastery with its delicate 14th-century cloister, 11th-century pharmacy, and small museum.

Lokrum Island

This forested island just ten minutes by ferry from Dubrovnik is the best place for swimming near the old town. Although its beaches are rocky, the water is clear and if you tire of the sun, you can visit the island’s Benedictine monastery which has a fragrant botanical garden. At the heart of the island lies the 19th-century Royal Fort which offers good views down over the surrounding landscape.

Cable Car to Mount Srđ

For expansive views over Dubrovnik, the coast and the surrounding islands, take the cable car up to the summit of Mount Srđ which sits at 412 m (1,352 ft) above sea level, rising up behind the city. If you can, aim to be here at sunset for the best views of the town. Near the summit cable car station is the Imperial Fort, a sturdy, early 19th-century defence post built by the French during the Napoleonic Wars. The fort houses the Homeland War Museum which details the history of the fort as well as the Siege of Dubrovnik in the early 1990s.

Game of Thrones

Lovrijenac Fortress, Dubrovnik

The city’s Spanish Steps were the scene of Cersei’s naked walk through King’s Landing to the Red Keep (Fort Lawrence). The 15th-century Minčeta Tower doubled as the House of the Undying, and Lokrum was the setting for the city of Qarth with many scenes filmed in the monastery’s botanical garden. If you make it as far as the visitor centre, you can sit in a reproduction of the Iron Throne.

Best time to visit Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik makes a good year-round destination, though to avoid the worst of the crowds and the heat it’s best to plan a trip outside of July and August. April to June and September and October offer pleasant but cooler temperatures and fewer people on the streets. Although most hotels and activities are available year round, some are closed from November to March.

Craggily beautiful Bosnia and Hercegovina is most intriguing for its East-meets-West atmosphere born of blended Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian histories. You will likely remember the country for its deep, human warmth, its beautiful mountains capes and its numerous medieval castle ruins.

SERBIA

Serbia doesn’t do ‘mild’: Belgrade rivals Berlin as a party destination, the northern town of Novi Sad hosts the epic Exit festival, and even its hospitality is emphatic – expect to be greeted with rakija (fruit brandy) and a hearty three-kiss hello.

MACEDONIA

Part Balkan, part Mediterranean and rich in Greek, Roman and Ottoman history. Glittering Lake Ohrid and the historic waterside town of Ohrid itself have etched out a place for Macedonia on the tourist map, but this small nation is far more than just one great lake.

Dubrovnik is the beating heart of an exciting region that calls for more than just a mini-break © urbazon / Getty Images

Gorgeous Dubrovnik bundles UNESCO-listed heritage with verdant nature, a stunning coastline with fascinating villages, an enthralling history with Game of Thrones- oriented pop culture and a plethora of options with a laidback vibe.

At the southernmost point of Croatia , Dubrovnik is cut off from the motherland by a small nook of Bosnia & Hercegovina that bisects the Croatian coast, and it's also the country’s last town before Montenegro . Within these international borders, Dubrovnik was once an independent republic, and today, it's the pulsing heart of an exciting region that calls for more than just a mini-break.

Here's what you should know before you go.

The Dubrovnik cable car descends Srd hill during sunset

1. Plan to see more than just the old town, and to put in some time

Many visitors to Dubrovnik make the mistake of thinking there’s not much more to the town than the whitewashed walled city. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the city’s symbol and a bucket-list item for travelers all over the world, so make the most of it before venturing further afield.

Spend a day or two exploring the grid of stone streets and taking in the fascinating sights, from palaces, towers and churches to Game of Thrones' King’s Landing backdrops. Marvel at the carpet of terracotta roofs from the city walls, then head up to Srđ hill for dazzling panoramas that showcase Dubrovnik beyond its historic core.

In Gruž Bay, the port, you can roam the green and fish markets , travel back to the Yugoslav era at the Red History museum , and dance to DJ-spun beats at  Klub Dubina . Soak up colorful sunsets from the Lapad Bay seafront  and take a dip at one of the many pebbly beaches.

Hop a ferry to nearby Lokrum , or venture out to serene Mljet Island and its forested national park. Sip bold red in the wineries on Pelješac Peninsula and discover folklore in the Konavle Valley, all while indulging in the easygoing local lifestyle.

2. Beware of the borders

If you're driving from Split to Dubrovnik, or if you intend to visit the Ottoman gem of Mostar , you'll have to cross the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina, and visiting the stunning Kotor requires crossing the border with Montenegro. To avoid hassle and disappointment, start your planning by checking the entry requirements first.

For worry-free travel from Split to Dubrovnik, consider swapping the wheels for a catamaran like Krilo , then island-hopping along the way.

3. Beachwear, slip-proof footwear and layers are the key to smart packing

The locals in Dubrovnik dress casually but stylishly. Your suitcase should feature the summer classics, from shorts and airy dresses to all things sun and beach, from bathing suits and flip-flops to hats, shades and sunblock. Don't forget to pack a light scarf and a rain jacket for breezy evenings and summer showers.

In September and October, layers that account for the wind and rain are the way to go. At all times, bring slip-proof footwear, as the shiny limestone streets are notorious for being slick at the slightest drizzle.

4. Book accommodations and restaurants in advance

Arriving in Dubrovnik spontaneously and hoping to find a place to stay in the high season is pretty much a recipe for disaster. Small and popular, Dubrovnik gets busy and fully booked easily, especially in luxury hotels and popular private accommodations.

Same goes for popular restaurants: if your palate yearns for a certain place, make a reservation a few days ahead to avoid disappointment, except for the Michelin-starred 360° , which you should book a month in advance.

5. Walk or take a bus, but never ever drive to the old town

One single-lane road leads to the old town, and at its end, scarce and expensive parking is highly unlikely to be available. So swap the drive for a stroll or a bus ride: compact and scenic, Dubrovnik is very walkable, and the public bus network covers the city areas very well.

6. In the old town, keep your clothes on and mind your manners

While it may be easy to confuse all of Dubrovnik for a beach, the old town is a lived-in neighborhood with schools, churches and institutions, so remain respectful at all times.

An authentic reenactment of Game of Thrones' Cersei's walk of shame might sound fun, but visitors to the old town are  expected to remain fully clothed at all times. If visiting churches, honor the sacred space by covering your shoulders and taking off your hat. Refrain from using your phone, turn your ringer off and never sightsee during service.

7. Be mindful when asking questions about the war

The Yugoslav attacks and the shelling from 1991 to 1992 left Dubrovnik shattered and deeply wounded. This is not a topic to be approached lightly; you may ask questions in a respectful manner, but be aware that some people prefer not to talk about it.

8. Get a Dubrovnik Card

Many find the prices of attractions around Dubrovnik to be on the higher side, but the Dubrovnik Card grants access to the main sights, plus free bus tickets and discounts in shops and restaurants. Depending on whether you go for a one-day, three-day or seven-day card, it'll include entry to the city walls and museums, like the Rector’s Palace or the Franciscan Pharmacy, plus discounts for Lokrum and Mljet Island.

9. Pay by card but tip in cash

Tipping isn’t mandatory, but it's generally expected and much appreciated. In restaurants, the magical number is around 10%, while in bars you can round up the bill.

Aside from Amex, credit cards are widely accepted, but you'll need to carry cash for tips, as it's rarely possible to add it to the credit card slip. Don’t be surprised when asked whether you’re paying with cash or card before seeing the bill; Croatian tax authorities require input of that information before the bill is printed.

10. Nurse your espresso and steer clear of to-go cups

Croatians take drinking coffee seriously. This is a favorite local pastime and social ritual, so if you're invited for coffee, try not to pass. Whether you take an espresso or bijela kava (latte), sip it slowly and never take it in a to-go cup.

11. Ditch bottled water and refill on fountains

Tap water is drinkable in Dubrovnik, and in the old town, you can refill your bottle from the fountains, like the two  Onofrios , which have the coolest water around.

12. Relax and enjoy, but exercise common sense

With a tight-knit community and generally well-lit areas, Dubrovnik remains a very safe city, both day and night. While hard crime is low, do exercise common sense when in crowds, as pickpockets turn up on occasion.

The most frequent query we receive from visitors is “Is it safe to travel to the Balkans?”

According to a UN research, the crime rate in the Balkans is generally lower than in Western Europe, and the number of homicides is declining all over the region.
