Royal Caribbean Shore Excursion to Amalfi Coast, Positano, Sorrento and Pompei

We had a wonderful day out when we did this tour. Driving along the Amalfi Coast. We went to Positano first a beautiful little village, with gorgeous cafes and shops. The we drove to Sorrento, where we had lunch on the rooftop at a luxury Hotel with breathtaking views of the beach a coastline. Then off to Pompeii to see the extraordinary relics of the volcanic devastation visited upon this ancient town. This was a well worth tour money well spent. Highly recommend this tour for the day off the Ship.

We had a wonderful tour of the Amalfi Coast by Share-a-Shore with Francesco as the driver/tour guide. The tour went far beyond our expectations aided by Francesco's careful driving (whew!), thorough knowledge of the region (he lives in Sorrento), great sense of humor and perfect English. He first took us over the mountains to Ravello for a look at the town and an overlook (literally) of the Amalfi Coast. From there, we wound our way down to the coastal town of Amalfi where the group split up for an hour to explore on our own. After we left Amalfi, we climbed to the coastal route and wound our way to Positano which is a gorgeous town that goes from the ocean and rises on terraces up to high on the hills. We ate at a fine family restaurant which is high on the hill overlooking Positano. Following Positano, Francesco drove us down to Pompeii where we met our guide (she asked that we call her Clair). Clair's tour of Pompeii was well done & quite informative with numerous interesting and titillating facts as the tour included the town brothel with its descriptive pictures. All in all, Share-a-Shore did a terrific job with a fantastic tour of one of the world's most gorgeous coasts and historic sights.

In the last few months i visited above countries although only few places of each country & I am sharing my experiences in my blog-JAAGTEY RAHO.if, someone wish to read real experience's they can read it.

We had the opportunity to do two excursions with Share a Shore. We did the Highlights of Rome/Vatican and the Florence/Pisa. Both were done with a family we didn't know before the trip. Meeting new people was a great part of the excursion. In Rome we chose the option with the tickets pre purchased. It was a great option. Saved a lot of time for us. Our guide, Marco, was very knowledgeable and knew the area very well. He was able to get around the small streets taking detours as needed. The stops were beautiful and the drive very comfortable and informative. Only wished we would have done the guide option for the Vatican. We also took the Florence/Pisa tour. Giovani was a great guide. Van was comfortable. He went out of his way to help us with tickets into see Michelangelo's David as we forgot to get them ahead of time. Also, helped the family we were with resolve an issue with their prepaid tickets. He really went above and beyond. I would absolutely use Share a Shore again and can't say enough good about them.

I booked this trip for me and my wife, my in-laws and a couple of friends. We arrived in Naples from a cruise (Carnival Vista). We were picked up by a very friendly driver (I can't remember his name) in a Mercedes Van. Once in the van, he started towards Sorrento. Our driver asked us if we wanted to stop at a Limoncello factory (he warned us it was going to be touristy). We did, and enjoyed the quick stop. We then finished heading towards Sorrento. Sorrento was beautiful. The views were amazing. Highly recommend. After an hour or so in Sorrento, we departed towards Positano. I thought Sorrento was beautiful but it pales in comparison to Positano. Unbelievable sights and neat city. I'd like to spend a few days here! Our driver suggested we go to a "mama's style" lunch at one of his favorite places. We agreed (28 Euros/person). We had several courses and wine and water. Food was good. I do think that the drivers get a cut or the company gets a cut as the only people here were people from a similar tour company. The meal took a while as well. I'd prefer a shorter meal - possibly a higher quality one (it was good but we've had better) and spend more time exploring the city. After our tour, we took off to Pompeii where our guide met us at the gate. We enjoyed our time in Pompeii and our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. All in all - this was an awesome tour. I 100% recommend it. Thinking of what the cruise line was offering, this was a steal!

Were a bit concerned about taking an independent shore excursion off our recent Mediterranean cruise but Crusing Excursions trips were about half the cost of our cruise ship ones. We did Sorrento/Amalfi & Pompeii from Naples, Florence orientation from Livorno and a walking tour in Mykonos. All were well organised, easy to find off the ship and got us back on time. We would recommend Cruising Excursions shore tours in Italy and Greece

1. Castel Nuovo

Also known as Maschio Angioino Castle, Castel Nuovo is located at the exit of the cruise terminal area. This massive 13th-century military castle dominates the harbor and Piazza Municipio with its Neoclassical Palazzo San Giacomo, which houses the City Hall. The castle has five imposing towers and served as a royal seat for the kings of Naples, Aragon, and Spain until 1815. Today, Castel Nuovo houses a civic museum containing extensive art collections dating from the 15 th to the 20 th centuries, while some halls of the castle are used for temporary cultural exhibitions and events.

2. Castel dell Ovo

The majestic seaside castle is located at the southernmost tip of Naples city, on a peninsula (a former island) with an excellent strategic position that dominates the Gulf of Naples. It is situated 1.5 km/1 mile or a 20-minute walk from the Naples cruise port and is well worth visiting, as it is the oldest standing fortification in Naples built by the Normans in the 12 th century. There is no entrance fee, and you can climb to its two towers and an observation deck from where you can take in the breathtaking views of the Gulf of Naples and Mount Vesuvius in the distance.

3. Piazza del Plebiscito

Situated around 800 meters, or a 10-minute walk from the Naples cruise port, the 19th-century Piazza del Plebiscito is one of the largest and most beautiful squares in Naples. With its 53-meter high dome and Greek-style columns, a large, monumental Basilica San Francesco di Paola (Church of Saint Francis) dominates Piazza del Plebiscito. The Basilica was built in the Neo-classical style and is reminiscent of Rome’s Pantheon. Simple, yet impressive, the interior of the church features valuable and beautiful architecture and artwork.

The renowned 18th-century  San Carlo Theater and Opera House (Teatro di San Carlo), as well as the 17th-century sumptuously decorated Royal Palace of Naples (Palazzo Reale di Napoli), are other two important buildings that you can see around the square.

4. Castel Sant’Elmo

Perched atop the Vomero hill overlooking the city of Naples, Castel Sant’Elmo is a medieval, star-shaped fortress with a rich history dating back to the 14th century. Originally built as a royal residence, it later served as a military stronghold. Today, Castel Sant’Elmo houses the Naples Museum of Medieval Art, showcasing a diverse collection of artifacts.

The highlight of the castle is the breathtaking panoramic views of Naples and the Bay of Naples that you can admire from the top. The easiest way to reach the castle is by funicular that you can catch on Via Toledo (one of the main streets located a 10-minute walk from the port). The funicular runs all the time and will take you to the top of the hill. From the top station, you still need to walk about 10 minutes to the castle. A small entrance fee is required to enter the castle (it was 5€ in 2023).

6. Naples Old Town

Naples is a vibrant city bursting with life, full of colorful, authentic streets where you can find plenty of shops, restaurants, cafes, bars, street sellers, and much more. There are several streets you can explore, and they are all within walking distance from Naples cruise port.

The most famous ones are the pedestrian streets Via Toledo and Via Chiaia – they are both located a 15-minute walking distance from the port and they meet at Piazza del Plebiscito and Fontana del Carciofo. They are super crowded and packed with countless shops, restaurants, bars, and pizzerias offering mouth-watering pizzas, panzerotti, pasta, and other Italian authentic dishes.

Another famous street that traverses the Naples historic center is Spaccanapoli – a narrow, straight, and long promenade where you can explore historic churches, palaces, bustling piazzas, unique shops, and a large number of restaurants, bars, and open-air cafes.

7. Taste the Local Pizza

When it comes to tasting pizza in Naples – it is an absolute must! The pizza was invented in Naples, and in every place where I tried it – that was the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life! For over one century, L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele has had the reputation of making the best pizza in Naples, and that’s where Julia Roberts was featured indulging in a slice of pizza in the “Eat, Pray, Love” movie. The pizzeria is only 20 minutes’ walk away from the port!

9. Galleria Borbonica

Also known as Bourbon Gallery or Bourbon Tunnel, it is an impressive underground passage built for military purposes to connect the Royal Palace to military barracks in Naples. It is situated 2 km/1.2 miles, or a 25-minute somewhat uphill walk from the Naples cruise port and represents one of the most unique places you can visit in Naples. Constructed in the 19 th century, the stunning underground tunnels served as an escape route for the royal inhabitants, and also as a shelter for Naples residents during the bombardments during World War II.

Old cars from 1970, Bourbon Tunnel

Time permitting, I highly recommend you take one of the Bourbon Tunnel tours , as they are a fascinating way to discover the important and emotional moments in the history of Naples. On tour, you can visit underground caves, a restored ancient cistern, vintage artifacts dating from WWII, pieces of sculptures, old cars and bikes, and much more. If you are seeking some adrenaline rush, you can go for an adventure or Speleo tour as well. Overall, I was truly impressed by the visit, and I strongly suggest you put it on your Naples bucket list.

10. Pompeii

Pompeii visit is by far the most popular day trip from Naples, due to the huge historical importance of this world-famous archaeological site. Nestled at the foothills of Mount Vesuvius, the ancient city of Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and other neighboring towns, was buried under 4 to 6 meters (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of the powerful Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The everyday life of this wealthy city was frozen at the moment it was buried, thus the excavated site offered a unique snapshot of Roman life and its inhabitants.

Pompeii archeological site has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most visited attractions in Italy. Today, visitors can roam through the elegantly paved streets of ancient Pompeii, admire the ruins of the lavish mansions and villas of distinguished Romans, visit their elaborate bathhouses, a multitude of Roman temples, a massive 20.000-capacity Amphitheatre of Pompeii, and more. You can learn about the tragic destiny of the ancient city and over 2.000 Pompeii residents on a self-guided tour, or on a guided tour which I highly recommend.

If  the weather is hot and sunny, make sure you bring a hat and water, as the largest portion of the Pompeii Archeological Park is not shaded. Keep an eye on your belongings, as there are many pickpockets on the trains in particular. Wear comfortable shoes , as there is a lot of walking involved. The ruins of Pompeii are partially wheelchair accessible.

How to Get from Naples to Pompeii?

The distance from Naples cruise port to Pompeii Archeological Park is 25 km/15.5 miles, or a 25-minute drive. There are several ways to get from Naples to Pompeii.

  • BOOK A TOUR – Although it takes a full day to explore Pompeii, cruise ships offer half-day tours to Pompeii from Naples . These tours often include traveling in big groups, but in my opinion, to fully enjoy the place, you should go for a  small-group tour . In case you decide to visit on your own, make sure you book Pompeii skip-the-line tickets to avoid long queues and crowds.
  • BOOK A TAXI/PRIVATE TRANSFER – In case you’ve already booked your entrance tickets to Pompeii, the private transfer is the best, fastest, and most convenient option to get to the ruins. It’s even cheaper than a taxi and guarantees you a safe return to the ship. Compare the transfer prices from Napoli to Pompei
  • TRAIN FROM NAPLES TO POMPEII – Take the Circumvesuviana train at Napoli Centrale (Naples central train station at Piazza Garibaldi) and get off at Pompei Scavi/Villa Dei Misteri stop. The train ride lasts 30-35 minutes, and trains go every 30 minutes. Once you get off at Pompeii Scavi-Villa Dei Misteri, the entrance to the archeological site is only a 5-minute walk. The Circumvesuviana line to Pompeii is quite busy, and you might not be able to get a seat. There is no luggage disposal area. Due to the large crowds on the trains, I suggest you save at least one hour for the ride each way.

11. Herculaneum Ruins

Located around 15 km/9.5 miles, or less than a 30-minute drive from Naples cruise port, Herculaneum is another ancient city in Campania that was destroyed in the Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD along with Pompeii and several other neighboring towns. Smaller in size than Pompeii, but equally wealthy, Herculaneum was a popular resort town and seaside destination for many Roman patrician families.

Today, visitors can stroll through the ruins of Herculaneum and visit the wealthy Roman’s notable houses, sumptuously adorned baths, halls decorated with frescoes and mosaics, splendid arches and columns, spacious atriums… The most popular ruins are Men’s Baths, Hall of the Augustals, Samnite House, House of Relief of Telephus, and Fornici. It takes only 2-3 hours to visit Herculaneum, which is an ideal option for a half-day trip.

Some parts of the Herculaneum ruins are not wheelchair accessible, and it is highly recommended to leave kids’ strollers or pushchairs at the free bag check counter at the entrance.

Herculaneum ruins near Naples cruise port

How to Get to Herculaneum from Naples?

  • BOOK A TOUR – You can visit Herculaneum with a cruise ship shore excursion or on a private, customized tour (always the most convenient option!)/ small group tour . The archeological site is not as large as Pompeii, and a Herculaneum tour lasts from 2-3 hours.
  • BOOK A TAXI/PRIVATE TRANSFER – It takes a 30-minute drive to get from Naples to Herculaneum and it’s always the most comfortable option.
  • TAKE A TRAIN TO HERCULANEUM – A train ride is an alternative option. Take the Circumvesuviana train at Naples central station (Napoli Centrale – Piazza Garibaldi) and get off at the “ Ercolano Scavi ” stop, located a 10-minute walk from Herculaneum. Circumvesuviana train line runs every 30 minutes between Naples and Sorrento and has several stops, including Pompeii and Herculaneum stops. The train ride from Naples to Herculaneum lasts 15-20 minutes.

12. Mount Vesuvius

Towering over the city of Naples and the ruins of the ancient Pompeii, Herculaneum, and neighboring cities, the mighty Vesuvius dominates the Gulf of Naples and is one of several volcanoes that form the Campanian volcanic arc. Vesuvius has become notoriously world-famous due to the eruption in 79 AD that buried the ancient Roman cities of Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, and Stabiae, killing 16.000 people overall. The Vesuvius has erupted over 50 times for thousands of years, and its last eruption lasted from 1913-1944. It is still considered active, and one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world.

Today, it is possible to visit the Vesuvius National Park and explore its trails, the Great Cono crater (Il Gran Cono) situated at 1.000 meters above sea level, and the park’s rich historical and cultural heritage, consisting of the museum, archeological sites, the Roman villas, and historical buildings. If you are into hiking, there is a network of 11 paths of a total length of 54 km (33.5 mi) that you can explore and enjoy spectacular panoramic views of Naples, Lazio, and the Campania region.

The Mount Vesuvius hike is moderate and you should wear comfortable shoes. Bring a hat, water and of course a good camera . The visit to the crater lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Check the weather because if it rains, you won’t be able to see the crater (it is closed for safety reasons).

Hot to Get from Naples to Mount Vesuvius?

  • BOOK A TOUR – Cruise ships normally offer the Mount Vesuvius hiking tours, but the number of spots available on these tours is quite limited, so make sure you pre-book the tickets to ensure your spot. If you are looking for a more private option, you should go for   small group tours .
  • BOOK A TAXI/PRIVATE TRANSFER – The distance between the Naples cruise port and Mount Vesuvius is roughly 20 km/12.5 miles, or a 30-minute drive.
  • VISIT VESUVIUS BY TRAIN – Take the Circumvesuviana train for Sorrento or Poggiomarino via Pompeii at Naples central station (Stazione Centrale – Piazza Garibaldi) and get off at either Ercolano Scavi station (the one where you get off for Herculaneum) or Pompei – Villa Dei Misteri (the one where you get off for Pompeii). From both train stations, you can hop on the local bus going to Vesuvius. The local bus company is EAV, and the buses run quite rarely (every hour or even more).

13. Sorrento

Located on the opposite side of the Gulf of Naples, about 50 km/31 miles from the port of Naples, Sorrento is a magnificent cliffside town and a popular tourist resort on the Sorrentine Peninsula. Sorrento boasts a scenic coastline, gorgeous landscapes, and a multitude of colorful houses, and is widely known for its wood-carving traditions, ceramics, marquetry, and lacework shops.

You can stroll through its lively Tasso Square (Piazza Tasso), the central square where you’ll find quaint shops, restaurants, and bars serving delicious Italian specialties and local wine. Delight in the views of the picturesque port of Sorrento – Marina Grande , browse the shops of Via san Cesareo – the main shopping hub of the city, visit a beautiful 14th-century Cathedral of Sorrento , or take in the breathtaking views of the bay from Villa Comunale park and gardens.

A trip to the marvelous Amalfi Coast is one of the most attractive day trips from Naples. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this scenic stretch of coastline is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Italy. Dramatic mountain cliffs, eye-catching, colorful villages, terraced vineyards, secluded pebbled beaches, and bright-yellow lemon groves are the typical landscapes you can admire while you travel through this gorgeous region.

Amalfi Coast consists of a multitude of villages, the most famous one being Amalfi – a tiny, seaside village boasting narrow, cobblestone streets lined with cafes, shops, and typical Italian restaurants, and a beautiful St. Andrew Cathedral (Cathedral of Sant’ Andrea). The cathedral dominates the main village square – Piazza del Duomo , and dates from the 9 th century when the original church was built. The Cathedral features a magnificent 18th-century Norman-Arab-Byzantine façade and the splendid Cloister of Paradise that served as a burial ground for the noble Amalfi families back in the Middle Ages. In the village, you’ll also find many authentic shops selling colorful hand-painted ceramics and the region’s signature limoncello liquor.

Faraglioni rocks are another must-see natural treasure of Capri Island, situated in the south of the islet. You can stroll through Marina Grande , the vibrant harbor and the main port of Capri, full of shops, restaurants, and bars where you can savor Italian specialties and great local wines.

You can visit the splendid Gardens of Augustus , Marina Piccola – home to the mythical Siren’s rock, where according to the myths the sirens seductively sang to Odysseus, or the 19 th century luxurious Villa San Michele – the home of famous Swedish physician Alex Munthe.

In the town of Capri, explore Piazza Umberto I (known as Piazzetta), the bustling central square packed with brand stores, bars, and fancy restaurants, featuring a beautiful clock tower that represents the iconic symbol of the town. There are several churches and historical landmarks nearby, such as the baroque Church of Santo Stefano that dominates the square, or Certosa di San Giacomo (the Charterhouse of St. Giacomo), the 14th-century Carthusian monastery and one of the oldest buildings on the island. If you are into archeological ruins, head over to Villa Jovis , the impressive ruins of a grand Roman palace dating from 27 AD, located on the northeastern coast of Capri.

How to Get from Naples to Capri Island?

  • BOOK A TOUR : The cruise ship shore excursions department normally offers Capri tours, however, I suggest you book this tour with a reputable independent tour operator as it’s cheaper. Check out the best Capri Island tours from Naples
  • NAPLES TO CAPRI FERRY RIDE – The ferry ride varies from 50 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, and there are several companies providing ferry transport. Some of them depart from Molo Beverello and some from Calata Porta di Massa (located next to it). There are high-speed, regular, and slow ferries, and the frequency depends on the season (from April to October they are more frequent due to the number of tourists). You can check the timetables on the Naples ferry schedule website .

HELP ME CHOOSE AN EXCURSION IN NAPLES

Cool Cruiser

Fingers crossed we are going on a Royal Caribbean cruise in May.  My DH and I trying to decide between two ship excursions on our Naples stop.  This is our first time in Italy and I was hoping those of you who have been there can help us make a good choice  The two we are deciding between is  " Amalfi Coast By Land and Sea" and  "Best of Positano, Sorrento and Pompeii" .  The latter is a small group tour and goes to Pompeii first.  The first is a scenic drive, an hour boat ride to see the coast and Pompeii in the afternoon.  They are both 9 hours.  I am choosing a ship excursion because as of now it seems that you need one to explore Italian ports.  Thank you in advance!  We are looking forward to hearing your opinions.

Done both of these (or very similar tours).  The best of Positano, Sorrento and Pompei is a really good sampler of the beauty of the Amalfi coast and the history and ruins in Pompei, where the Amalfi Coast tour is spectacular scenery.  Me, I loved Pompei, as I like history and seeing all the buildings in various states and how people lived at the time.    My wife preferred to the scenery of the Amalfi Coast.  It really comes down to what you prefer.   Touring Pompei does entail a fair bit of walking, nothing real strenuous but you are touring what was a city.  One other note the best of tour definitely felt like a busy or packed day, where the Coast tour felt a little more relaxed.

Thank you for your thoughts. I feel like we should see Pompeii since we are there but we really do love to walk around quaint towns. Do you think either of these tours give us time to walk around the towns to shop and grab lunch?  Do you know of any other tours in Naples that we should consider???

Try to consider what would make you happy and put aside the "shoulds" as much as possible.

Thank you Euro cruiser.  You are right!  I think I’m going to take another peek at our options.

When we did this tour we spent the morning in Pompeii then we went to Sorrento had lunch (got my first Limoncello)  walked around Sorrento for a while before we were off to Positano where we had some time to explore before the trip back to the ship.

If you have to choose a shore excursion offered by the ship, my thought would be to choose the one that is a small-group tour. In general these offer a better experience and less waiting for everyone to catch up to the group, use the restroom, get back to the bus, etc.

You will NOT visit Positano on a large bus tour; they are not allowed into the town and it is probably the most charming of the Amalfi stops. (Many also like Ravello but I found it pretty dull. Of course, I am one who would always opt for Pompeii, so... horses for courses.)

If you are not interested in Pompeii, why pick two tours that both stop there?

Thank you Woody14 and cruisemom42 for your responses.  Woody14  that sounds like a busy but great day.  cruisemom42 I think we would be happier with a small tour too.  I felt like I needed to do Pompeii but I'm realizing I don't need to do anything except enjoy myself!!  We enjoy food, wine and just seeing beautiful scenery.  I think I am going to find an excursion that just does some of the towns on the Amalfi Coast.  Unfortunately as of now Royal Caribbean isn't showing many excursions in each port.

I lived about 45 min away from Pompeii for 2 years and didn’t go for a year....maybe waited until the last year even.....I agree that you should forget the “shoulds”.....I planned a trip with my friend in 2019 and since Pompeii is super large, I decided we would be better off doing Herculaneum.....smaller and more well preserved.....we were satisfied.....(though we had 3 more days in Campania haha) you pick what interests you most......it’s not worth it to try to pack EVERYTHING into one day.....

i love boats and Amalfi, so I would lean towards that.....it’s up to you....

but pompeii in the morning is a bit better before it gets crowded as the day goes on....and you might be less ok with all the walking first off, and relaxing in cute towns as you get more tired....

Thank you Kathscof!  I am leaning now towards two different tours.  One that just does a nice easy day in Sorrento and  one that does Sorrento and Amalfi.  The second one seems to have a ton of driving but I think it may be worth it to do both.  Thoughts??

I would go for the amalfi one, as MY favorite side of the peninsula is that one.....sorrento feels to me like a large-ish town made for tourists, with enough space and options for everyone......the road to Amalfi is one of the most twisty and turns roads i have seen...(though I haven’t been everywhere in the world), if you get carsick, I would advise against it 🙂  the views are GORGEOUS and that side is what you think of when you think of the Amalfi Coast....to me, the tour with both seems like a good mix of not trying to do everything, but also making sure you make the most of your time....

Just another thought,  the tour that includes a boat trip as well would give you a relaxing way to enjoy the view.  I also wouldn’t limit myself to Sorrento.  Wondering if they are offering a trip to Capri?  It is absolutely stunning and perhaps a more relaxing trip, with gorgeous views. And if you like wandering in smaller places Anacapri is lovely.

They do offer an excursion to Capri.  I will look into that as well.  Thank you!

Ok.  I'll forget the only Sorrento tour.  We don't get carsick and love the gorgeous views.  Sounds like its worth the long ride.  Thanks again!

I agree with the poster who said don't limit yourself to Sorrento.  By itself Sorrento is okay (just okay), but in terms of the charms of the Amalfi Coast towns (Positano, Amalfi, Ravello) it doesn't compete. Also very many tourists stay there -- you are more likely to hear English than Italian in the streets.

And I also agree with considering Capri.  It's such a quintessential Italian experience and has a bit of everything -- scenery, history, food, shopping....

Thank you.   I am looking at the  Capri tours and they do look very appealing!

Thank you to everyone who responded!  We have decided to do the "Capri on Your Own" tour.  We will rent a private boat with a captain for 3 hours, then have a nice lunch and walk around a little bit.   The tour includes the ferry to Capri , transportation to the ferry and back.

Really too late to respond except to say that I think you made a great choice!  Pompeii is great, but there are plenty of other places in Europe where you'll see ruins.  (I know all ruins are not the same, but still....)  And Sorrento is a nice city but Amalfi and Positano appeal to me more.  Capri is still on my list for when I'm in that area again.

Interested in the outcome of your "Capri on your own" tour.  I assume it's essentially RC just purchasing the ferry tickets on your behalf and then sending you on your way?  I'm considering this tour rather than purchasing the ferry tickets myself, only because RC is then responsible for getting us back to the ship, in the event there are any ferry or weather delays.

I was on a Mediterranean cruise in 2010 (We were with an alumni group and things had been planned for us in advance).  When at Naples our excursion consisted of Pompeii, time in Sorrento, and a drive along the Amalfi Coast up to Positano where they arranged for us to have lunch in a local restaurant.  It was great.

I will be returning to the area in April 2023 on an NCL Star cruise.  We are trying to decide what to do.  Right now we are talking Pompeii and Amalfi Coast.  I am thrilled about seeig the Amalfi Coast once again.  Quite frankly, I can take or leave "Pompeii" but two in our group have not seen it, and they are probably going to want to. (I haven't seen a ship excursion that includes Pompeii, Sorrento, and Amalfi)

Were it me, I'd go with the Sorrento/Amalfi excursion.  I really liked Sorrento.  Can't explain what it was...but that was back in 2010.  Maybe it was the gelato that I had (LOL).

Just be sure to include Amalfi.  And I wouldn't rule out a non-cruise excursion.  Evidently that's what I had back in 2010 ... and it was great.  (But if you can find the perfect excursion through your ship, then go fo it.  That way you don't have to sweat beating the clock to get back to the boat ... everyone tells me I need to get over that 'fear of getting back to the ship in time'.  LOL again)

We have also done both.  We did Sorrento, Positano, Pompeii last month (Aug).  What I like about this tour is it includes both the Amalfi Coast and Pompeii.  Here is a link to some of our pictures,

And, here are some pictures from the Amalfi Coast by sea excursion (from a little longer ago)

Okay, this is an unapologetically biased suggestion.  Yes, do Amalfi Coast at some time, it is so beautiful.  However, there’s much to do in Napoli as well.  My favourite is to visit the E. Marinella store about 20 minutes walk from port and pick up some ties.  And, going later in opposite direction visit Da Michele for pizza.  A simple day but pleasurable.

edinburgher

There is also Herculaneum.  Those who have not previously visited Pompeii might find this interesting and those who have previously  visited Pompeii would find it a quite different experience.  The train station is on the same line (circumvesuviana which shuttles back and forth all day between Naples and Sorrento)) as the train to Sorrento. and from the Herculaneum train station there is also an option to go up Mt Vesuvius. (Internet search options) Or from Sorrento check your travel options for the Amalfi Coastal run. Pompeii on the same line so you could very easily combine either Herculaneum or Pompeii with Sorrento.

Herculaneum is often underrated, but it is more compact so far  less exhausting, and has buildings which in some cases are more complete than some in Pompeii. (Again, reviews and photos/images online)

As you have previously mentioned your anxierty about the ship leaving without you, I would advise some caution regarding the Amalfi Coast. Back in the day it was busy but manageable, but  In recent years the sheer volume of traffic on it has made it notorious for delays and accidents and I personally would not risk this on public transprt. (think over tourism) It got so bad in recent years that earlier this year, the authorities introduced a traffic flow system which involved car users with odd numbered plates using certain roads on certain days of the week and those with even numbered plates using them on the alternate days.

For those who have already visited the major must-sees along Amalfi, or if you just feel like you need a really relaxing but also genuinely Italian experience, the thermal baths on the island of Ischia are worth a visit. The ferry to Ischia leaves next to the cruise port and takes about 1 hour. The best known and most liked baths are perhaps Poseidon, a day pass costs around 40 euros depending on the season, and you can take a taxi from the ferry port. It's a natural spring, and there are several outdoor pools with temperatures from 15 to 40 C, built into the hillside with beautiful landscaping and spectacular views. Ischia is less famous than Capri, but also much more budget friendly and very popular with the locals around Naples.

Naples Tours and MSC Shore Excursions

The ancient city of Naples is a feast for the senses, as you’ll discover on any number of Naples excursions. Steeped in art and culture, it’s easy to miss some of the most spectacular attractions, so, join one of the many MSC shore excursions  when you visit Naples.

The streets in the ancient heart of Naples city centre faithfully follow the original Greek and Roman layout, but today, boutiques and restaurants are squeezed between crumbling palazzi and Baroque churches. On tiny Via San Gregorio Armeno , an array of nativity scenes, known as presepi , mean it’s Christmas year-round. Enjoy spectacular views up in Posillipo or go underground to explore parts of the original Greek Neapolis, complete with tunnels, aqueducts and chambers.

Admire the famous San Carlo theatre and Principe Umberto I ’s steel and glass gallery, while nearby Piazza del Plebiscito houses the Royal Palace and the Basilica San Francesco da Paola, offering views across the bay to Vesuvius.  There are Caravaggio paintings in venues like Gallerie d’Italia and Museo di Capodimonte, and if that’s not enough, take a boat ride to the island of Capri and sip a limoncello in the piazzetta or simply take a dip in the sea.

No Naples Trip is complete without visiting the archaeological site of Pompeii , an unmissable experience revealing the Roman city before it was buried in ash following the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Naples tours are easy to book and designed to reveal the best of the city and nearby.

Who wouldn’t be spellbound at the sight of Vesuvius looming over the historic Roman city of Pompeii ? Almost 2,000 years ago the volcano erupted and buried the city and many of its inhabitants in ash and pumice.
