Seoul and Busan are the two most popular cities for tourists to visit in South Korea. Lucky for travellers, it is super easy to travel from Seoul to Busan!
The easiest and most popular way to travel from Seoul to Busan is on the KTX high-speed train. You can also take a slower train, a bus, or fly from Seoul to Busan. No matter which transportation method you choose, it is really easy and straightforward to travel between Seoul and Busan.
My personal preference is to take the KTX. It is the quickest, most convenient, and, in my opinion, funnest way to travel from Seoul to Busan.
But this is your decision to make, so I’m going to cover all the different ways you can travel from Seoul to Busan, so you can choose the best option for you!
I’ll also break down the pros and cons of each transportation method to help you make your decision.
Before we get into the different transportation methods, I wanted to let you know I have a blog post about how to travel from Seoul to Gyeongju in case you’re making that journey while you’re in South Korea. And an in-depth 3-day Gyeongju itinerary you may find helpful!
Table of Contents
Option One: Taking the KTX from Seoul to Busan
The KTX is my favourite way to travel throughout Korea. The KTX is a network of high-speed trains that zip you across the country in no time at all.
The best part about the KTX trains is that they are super clean, comfortable, and have lots of luggage storage space.
I always have tons of Korean skincare in my luggage, so I’m always thankful to board a KTX train and know I don’t have to muster the strength to lift my bag onto an overhead rack. I can store it in the luggage storage area at the back of every car and forget about it until I get off the train.
KTX trains leave Seoul once or twice per hour and are direct! No transferring from one train to another required.
How Long Does the KTX from Seoul to Busan Take?
It takes just under three hours to travel from Seoul to Busan on the KTX. That’s pretty darn fast considering the distance between Seoul and Busan is 329km.
How Much Does a KTX Ticket Cost?
The cost of a KTX ticket depends on when you’re travelling. Your ticket will cost more if you’re travelling during the weekend and the busy season. And much less expensive if you travel on a weekday during off-peak times.
In general, you can expect a one-way ticket from Seoul to Busan on the KTX to cost between 53,000 won and 60,000 won. That is approximately $44 to $50 USD.
You can also get a return ticket, and it costs 120,000 won or $100 USD.
Where to Purchase KTX Tickets
I always purchase my KTX tickets online through the Korean Rail website.
There is an English version of the website, and it is really easy and straightforward to use.
The website tells you to print a copy of your ticket before getting on the KTX. I always print my ticket just to be safe, but I’ve had lots of friends just screenshot their ticket on their phone rather than print it out. They’ve never had anybody take issue with them doing that.
I recommend printing a copy of your ticket just to be safe, but I wouldn’t stress too much about it if you don’t have access to a printer.
You are able to purchase your tickets up to a month in advance, so you’ll be able to print your ticket before you get to Korea if you book far enough in advance.
You normally don’t have to purchase your ticket more than a couple of days in advance, but if you’re travelling on a Korean bank holiday, you’ll want to book as far in advance as possible. Tickets on bank holidays sell out really quickly !
The other option for purchasing KTX tickets is to go to the station and purchase a ticket there.
You can either purchase a ticket from a ticket agent at the counter or at one of the ticket machines throughout the train station.
I don’t recommend purchasing your ticket at the train station rather than online. If you’re a last-minute traveller and enjoy being spontaneous, then purchasing a KTX ticket at the station may be the right move for you.
But I personally think online is the better option for most travellers. It saves you having to make a trip to the train station to buy your ticket in advance, the online system is super easy to use, and it is really easy to select a seat using the online reservation system.
It just seems like a little bit of a waste of your time, and you could spend that extra time exploring all the beautiful things Seoul has to offer like Gyeongbokgung Palace .
Where Does the KTX Depart from in Seoul?
You can catch a KTX train from Seoul to Busan at either Seoul Station or Yongsan Station .
If you’re a tourist, you’ll probably want to get on the train at Seoul Station. It is much more central than Yongsan Station but pick whatever station is closest to where you’re staying in Seoul.
You can get to both Seoul Station and Yongsan Station by metro and bus, so they’re pretty accessible and easy to get to no matter where you’re staying.
I always try to either walk or take the metro when I have my luggage with me. It is a bit awkward to navigate taking your bags on a public bus. Especially if it is during rush hour!
Where Does the KTX Arrive at in Busan?
The KTX train arrives at Busan Station . Busan Station is super central, so it is really easy to get from the train station to wherever you’re staying in Busan.
You can jump on the metro right at Busan Station, and Seomyeon Station (the most popular district in Busan for tourists to stay) is just seven stops away.
Pros of Taking the KTX from Seoul to Busan
- Very quick compared to other options
- Comfortable
- Great luggage storage options
Cons of Taking the KTX from Seoul to Busan
Option Two: Taking a Slow Train from Seoul to Busan
The next option is taking a slow train from Seoul to Busan. They have some of the benefits of KTX trains like being clean and comfortable, but they are really slow compared to KTX trains.
There are three different types of slow trains that travel from Seoul to Busan:
These trains may be slower than the KTX, but they are more affordable. They’re a great option for travellers who are on a tight budget and aren’t in a rush to get from Seoul to Busan.
How Long Does the Slow Train from Seoul to Busan Take?
The length of your journey depends on which slow train you choose to take. The trains have the following journey times:
- ITX: 4.5 hours
- SRT: 2.5 hours
- Mugunghwa: 5.5 hours
How Much Does a Slow Train Ticket Cost?
This, again, depends on what type of slow train you’re taking. An average ticket for each train costs:
- ITX: 42,000 won or approximately $35 USD
- SRT: 52,000 won or approximately $43 USD
- Mugunghwa: 28,000 won or approximately $23 USD
You can see that there is a direct correlation between the journey length and the ticket price.
The shorter the journey, the more expensive the ticket. The longer the journey, the less expensive the ticket.
Where to Purchase Slow Train Tickets
The process for purchasing slow train tickets is exactly the same as purchasing KTX tickets.
You can purchase your tickets online through the Korean Railway website or in person at any train station.
It is less important that you purchase slow train tickets in advance as they don’t tend to sell out as quickly as KTX tickets do.
I still recommend purchasing your slow train tickets a day or two in advance just to be safe though. Plus you’ll want to make sure you get the type of seat you want (either window or isle).
Slow trains tend to run less frequently than KTX trains, so you won’t have as many departure times to choose from.
If you have a specific time you want to leave Seoul or arrive in Busan, be sure to book in advance just in case the specific train you want to catch is a popular choice.
Where Do Slow Trains Depart from in Seoul?
You shouldn’t be surprised to hear that where you catch the slow train from Seoul to Busan depends on what type of slow train you take.
You can catch the ITX at either Seoul Station or Yeongdeungpo Station .
Yeongdeungpo Station is located across the river from downtown Seoul near Gimpo Airport, so you probably won’t be catching the ITX from this station. But it is a great option if you’re landing in Gimpo Airport and travelling directly to Busan without going into downtown Seoul.
For the average traveller, you’ll catch the ITX from Seoul to Busan at Seoul Station, which is easy to get to by metro, bus, or on foot. Again, just be cautious of taking luggage on public buses.
You’ll probably want to avoid doing that if at all possible and take the metro instead.
The SRT is the quickest of the slower trains and is the most comparable to the KTX. It is a fairly quick train and quite an enjoyable ride.
One of the major downsides to taking the SRT is that it only departs from Suseo Station .
Like Yeongdeungpo Station, Suseo Station is located across the river and a fair ways away from downtown Seoul. It is about an hour on public transportation from Seoul Station to Suseo Station to give you an idea of how far away it is.
I wouldn’t recommend you take this train unless you’re staying in either the Jamsil area or Gangnam area.
If you’re not staying in either of those two areas, you’re better off choosing a different mode of transportation to travel from Seoul to Busan.
It simply isn’t worth the time and effort to get to Suseo Station from the heart of Seoul.
The Mungunghwa train departs from Yongsan Station .
Yongsan Station is a little ways outside of downtown Seoul, but it is only a 12-15 minute metro ride from Seoul Station. So it isn’t too far out of the way if this is the train you choose to take.
The Mungunghwa train is the slowest train of them all, but it offers stunning views of the Korean countryside that you won’t get to enjoy on a faster train because you’re speeding past it.
The scenery probably isn’t worth the extra 2-3 hours on a train, but it is a nice way to put a positive spin on a long train ride if this is the train you end up choosing.
The train has a cafe in case you get hungry, but I would bring some snacks and water just in case there isn’t anything at the cafe that suits your taste buds.
A word of caution. I don’t suggest buying a non-reserved standing room ticket. These tickets allow you to sit in a seat if one is open, but you’re stuck with standing if there isn’t a seat. Your legs will hate you if you’re forced to stand for the entire 5.5 hour train ride!
It is worth the little bit more money to purchase a ticket with a reserved seat.
Where Do the Slow Trains Arrive at in Busan?
I’m switching things up here.
All the slow trains arrive at Busan Station !
This makes it super easy to navigate your way to where you’re staying. The metro station is there as well as a major bus terminal. Plus taxi’s are super affordable in South Korea if you’re not in the mood to take public transportation after your long journey from Seoul to Busan.
But I recommend using the metro to get to where you need to go. It is super easy to use, really affordable, and pretty hard to get lost on because there is only one line at Busan Station.
Pros of Taking a Slow Train from Seoul to Busan
- Less expensive than the KTX
Cons of Taking a Slow Train from Seoul to Busan
- The journey is quite a bit longer than the KTX
- Some of the train stations slow trains depart from in Seoul are out of the way and a hassle to get to
- Some slow trains don’t have good luggage storage, and you have to lift your suitcase overhead to store or keep it at your feet
Option Three: Taking the Bus from Seoul to Busan
The third option is to take the bus from Seoul to Busan.
The buses are actually quite nice. They’re large coach-style buses where you store your luggage under the bus and then have a nice, comfortable seat on the bus. There are also shades on the windows you can close if the sun is shining in your eyes.
I actually quite enjoy the journey when I take buses in South Korea.
How Long Does the Bus Ride from Seoul to Busan Take?
The bus ride takes about 4 hours . The actual length of your journey depends on the traffic.
Traffic in South Korea can get quite congested, so it isn’t unheard of for buses to get caught in a traffic jam and arrive at their destinations later than planned.
The good news is that buses often have a dedicated lane, so your chances of being stuck in traffic is much lower than if you were in a car.
Just to be safe, you shouldn’t plan any events or outings right when you’re scheduled to arrive in Busan just in case you encounter traffic.
Give yourself a window of 30-60 minutes just in case your bus is delayed.
How Much Does a Bus Ticket Cost?
The price of your ticket alters slightly based on what bus you end up taking. There are a number of different types of buses, but they are all priced within a dollar or two of each other. So it doesn’t really matter which bus you end up taking.
You can expect your bus ticket to cost between 23,000 won and 37,000 won. That equates to approximately $19 to $30 USD .
Most of the buses are around the 23,000 won to 25,000 won range ($19 to $20 USD) though. It is the premium buses with luxurious lie down seats that are on the more expensive end of the spectrum.
There are also night buses from Seoul to Busan. The prices for these buses range from 25,000 won to 42,000 won. That is approximately $21 to $35 USD .
Buses depart multiple times per hour, so it is pretty easy to find an affordable bus that fits your schedule.
Where to Purchase Bus Tickets
There are two ways to purchase a bus ticket. You can purchase a ticket online or in person.
You can’t go wrong with either option. They’re both super easy to navigate!
You can purchase your ticket online through the Korean Bus website. There is an English version, and it is quick and easy to navigate.
It is great because it lets you see the price and departure time of each bus, so you’re able to make an informed decision of what bus to get on.
You’ll be able to easily choose the cheapest bus, buy a ticket, and show up at the station ready to start your journey from Seoul to Busan.
The other option is to purchase a ticket in person at the bus station.
You can easily show up at the bus station the day you want to travel from Seoul to Busan and purchase a ticket for the next available bus.
There are normally three buses departing every hour, so you won’t have to wait long to get on the next bus!
Just be sure to inquire about pricing if you’re quoted a higher than average price. It may be worthwhile to wait a little bit longer and get on a less expensive bus that departs at a later time.
Where Does the Bus Depart from in Seoul?
All the buses depart from Seoul Gyeongbu Bus Station . It is also commonly referred to at the Seoul Express Bus Station.
Seoul Gyeongbu Bus Station is located across the river from downtown Seoul. It takes about 30 minutes on public transportation to get from Seoul Station to Seoul Gyeongbu Bus Station.
It is kind of out of the way, but you have no other choice if you want to take the bus from Seoul to Busan.
Where Does the Bus Arrive at in Busan?
Are you surprised to hear that the bus arrives at Busan Station ?
That’s right! Just like all the train options, the bus arrives at Busan Station as well. Busan Station is the main transportation hub in Busan, so it is no surprise that everything arrives and departs out of it.
Just jump on the metro, and you’ll quickly arrive at your hotel! You probably won’t even need to transfer metro lines!
You gotta love when it is as easy as that!
Pros of Taking the Bus from Seoul to Busan
- Comfortable seats
- Luggage storage under the bus, so you don’t have to fuss with your luggage
- Is the least expensive way to travel from Seoul to Busan
- Can purchase last-minute tickets without worrying about it being sold out
Cons of Taking the Bus from Seoul to Busan
- Longer than the KTX and most of the slow trains
- The bus station is a ways out of downtown Seoul
- Can be delayed if there is traffic
- Unable to get up and stretch your legs like you can on a train
Option Four: Flying from Seoul to Busan
The final option you have to travel from Seoul to Busan is by flying.
It wouldn’t be my first choice because you have to leave enough time to travel to the airport, check in, go through security, and be at your gate a few minutes before it starts boarding.
Plus you have to deal with the packing restraints of not being able to carry on liquids and don’t have as much luggage flexibility as you do on the KTX, slow train, or bus.
How Long is the Flight from Seoul to Busan?
The upside of flying is that the flight from Seoul to Busan is only an hour , so the travel time is much shorter than taking a train or bus.
But once you factor in the time it takes to check in and go through security, the amount of time it takes to get from Seoul to Busan is pretty much the same as taking the KTX or one of the faster slow trains.
How Much Does a Plane Ticket Cost?
Anybody who has every booked a plane tickets knows there are countless variables that go into how much you pay. It depends on the time of year, day of the week, time of day, what airline you fly, and who you purchase your ticket from.
It is quite difficult to give you an estimate of how much a plane ticket from Seoul to Busan will cost given there are so many factors that go into deciding the price.
You can get a really inexpensive plane ticket if you’re lucky and book on the right day at the right time.
In some instances, a plane ticket can cost less than a KTX ticket!
I wouldn’t go into booking a plane ticket from Seoul to Busan an expect it to be less expensive than the KTX though.
Set the expectation that a plane ticket will cost more than a KTX ticket, and you can be pleasantly surprised if it ends up being less expensive!
Where to Purchase Plane Tickets
You can purchase your plane ticket through your favourite third-party website or through the airline’s website directly.
I personally enjoy using Skyscanner to get an idea of the flight time and prices and then going to the airline’s website to find their price then to third-party websites. I keep searching around until I think I’ve found the best price.
Some third-party websites don’t have a great reputation so be sure to look into that as well before booking your flight.
I’ve found that in most cases the airline has either the lowest price or has a price that is very similar to the cheapest third-party website.
Where Do Flights Depart from in Seoul?
Gimpo airport.
A lot of tourists don’t know about Gimpo Airport when they fly into Seoul, but it is the ideal airport to fly out of when travelling from Seoul to Busan.
It always has cheaper flights than Incheon International Airport. It is also much closer to downtown Seoul and is quicker to get to on the metro, bus, or taxi.
I highly recommend you use Gimpo Airport to fly from Seoul to Busan.
Incheon International Airport
The other option you have is flying out of Incheon International Airport. Incheon is probably the airport you’ll fly into if you’re arriving in Seoul from another country, so you’re most likely aware of it.
I don’t recommend flying from Seoul to Busan via Incheon International Airport.
Flights will be significantly more expensive than Gimpo Airport, and the Incheon Airport is much further from downtown Seoul and takes a while to get to via public transportation.
The only exception to my recommendation to not fly out of Incehon International Airport is if you’re landing at the airport and then getting a flight to Busan the same day.
Even in that case, it might be better to fly out of Gimpo.
The two airports are connected by the metro, so it is super easy to get to Incheon International Airport to Gimpo Airport assuming you have enough time between flights.
Where Do Flights Arrive at in Busan?
Flights from both Incheon International Airport and Gimpo Airport arrive at Busan International Airport (Gimhae) .
The airport in Busan is quite close to downtown Busan, so it is convenient and easy to get to wherever you’re staying.
You can take the metro or bus if you want to use public transportation, but I recommend taking a taxi .
A taxi from Busan International Airport (Gimhae) to downtown Busan will cost you less than $20 USD and is much quicker than taking public transportation.
You will have to transfer at least once if you take public transportation and then walk from the metro station to your hotel.
A taxi is worth the little bit of money for the ease of not having to navigate the public transportation system- especially if you have multiple people in your group.
I’m not suggesting that the public transportation system in Busan is difficult to use by any means!
It is actually really easy to use. I just think it is worth the extra money to save some time and effort by taking a taxi.
Pros of Flying from Seoul to Busan
- Clean and comfortable
- Flight is fast
- Can be very affordable
Cons of Flying from Seoul to Busan
- You have to deal with all the hassles that come along with flying
- It isn’t great for the environment
- The departure and arrival points aren’t as convenient as the KTX
As you can tell, it is super easy to travel from Seoul to Busan, and you have many different transportation options to choose from.
There really is an option that fits everybody no matter what your budget or travel style!
I personally opt for the KTX. To me, it is worth the extra price to travel by high-speed train and arrive in Busan as quickly as possible. I also like that the KTX departs from Seoul Station. It is so convenient!
No matter what transportation method you choose, your journey from Seoul to Busan will be comfortable. Every train, bus, and plane is clean and comfortable, so you’ll enjoy your ride.
One final note before you plan your journey from Seoul to Busan:
Trains, buses, and planes depart on time and don’t tend to run late. You’ll want to arrive at the train station, bus station, or airport early enough to allow you to get to where you are departing from 10 to 15 minutes before you’re supposed to leave.
You’ll most likely be left behind if you’re running late!

How To Get From Seoul To Busan (Fastest and Cheapest Options)
In this post, you’ll learn how to get from Seoul to Busan in South Korea. The three main options are to take the Seoul to Busan bus, the train or to fly.
The distance between the two cities is just 200 miles (325 km) and the journey takes between one and four hours depending on the mode of transport.
On my trips between the two cities I took the bus, but let’s explore each option in detail below. But first, a quick synopsis of the pros and cons of each.
Table of Contents
Quick Overview of How to Get From Seoul to Busan
- Pros: can take more luggage.
- Cons: after check-in and security, the journey will take longer than going by road or rail.
Soul to Busan Train
- Pros: at just 2h40m by KTX, this is the fastest option to get from central Seoul to central Busan.
- Cons: KTX can be expensive depending on the season and ticket type.
Seoul to Busan Bus
- Pros: cheapest way to get from Seoul to Busan.
- Cons: slower than the train.
If you’re looking for things to do in the capital, check out this guide on how to spend three days in Seoul .
Three Ways to Travel from Seoul to Busan
1. flying from seoul to busan.
On paper, flying from Seoul to Busan is the quickest option with a flight time of just 55 minutes. However, when you take into account getting to and from each airport, check-in and security, the total time spent travelling is going to be longer than by train or bus.
- Fly from: Incheon International Airport
- Fly to: Gimhae International Airport
- Flight duration: 55 minutes
- Average cost: $40.00
Where to buy flights: Trip.com is one of the best places to find cheap flights in Asia.
Getting to Incheon International Airport
Take the AREX (Airport Railroad Express) direct to the airport from Seoul Station. The journey time is 40 minutes and costs 9,500 Won ($8.00).
Getting to Busan City Centre From The Airport
Gimhae International Airport is located 22km from central Busan. From the airport take the BGL (Busan Gimhea Light Rail) to Sasang Station. Transfer to Subway line 2 (green) for Seomyon Station, Haeundae and Gwangan.
2. Taking the Train
South Korea has an excellent rail infrastructure with both its fast KTX bullet trains and a slower network covering much of the country.
The quickest and most comfortable way to travel between Seoul and Busan is via the KTX, however for travellers on a tighter budget, the normal KoRail trains are a great option too.
Although it is always best to book tickets in advance (you can book online via Trip.com and Rail Ninja)
There are 69 KTX trains daily between Seoul and Busan, starting at 05:15 and running to 22:30 at night.
The KTX is South Korea’s high-speed “bullet” train service. The trains have a top speed of 305km per hour (190 miles per hour), making them a super-efficient way to get around the country.
Departure Station: Seoul Station, 405 Hangang-daero,, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Nearest subway: Seoul Station (lines 1 and 4)
Arrival Station: Busan Station, 206 Jungang-daero, Dong-gu, Busan
Duration: 2h40m
Average cost: $55
Where to buy KTX train tickets: you can book tickets online at Trip.com and Rail Ninja or buy in person at the station.
koRail is South Korea’s regular train network which covers parts of the country not serviced by KTX (and the same routes too). The KoRail trains are a great option as the trains are modern and comfortable, and cheaper than KTX.
- Duration: 4h30m
Average cost: $30
Where to buy train tickets: you can book tickets online at Trip.com and Rail Ninja or buy in person at the station.
For backpackers and those on a tight budget, taking the Seoul to Busan bus (a coach actually) is a great way to go and the method I used on this trip. The coaches are modern and comfortable with air conditioning and onboard toilets, and they make one rest stop halfway.
Another good reason for taking the bus is that it departs from Incheon so those arriving at Incheon International Airport or by boat don’t need to travel into central Seoul.
- Departure stop: Gyeongbu Bus Terminal (Seoul subway lines 3, 7 & 9).
- Arrival Stop: Nopo (Busan subway line 1)
- Average cost: $20
Where to buy bus tickets: you can buy tickets from the driver or at the ticket office of the Express Bus Terminal Station in Seoul.
Why go to Busan?
Busan is South Korea’s second-largest city and is an excellent destination thanks to its many beaches, cultural areas like Gamcheon, and street food. It is also the ideal jumping-off point for exploring Jeju Island or nearby Japan, which is only a couple of hours away by Hydrofoil.
Some Highlights include:
- Gamcheon Culture Village – brightly coloured houses lining the hillside
- Haedong Yonggungsa Temple – a beautiful temple overlooking the ocean
- Haeundae Beach – one of the most popular beaches in the city
- Gwangalli Beach – crescent moon shaped beach with lots of entertainment nearby
- Gwangbokdong Food Street – some of the best street food in Asia
- Nampo-Dong Shopping Mall – the largest department store in the world

There are a lot of bad reviews about rail.ninja. Is this a legit site to buy KTX tickets? Can you confirm if it’s legit? Thanks!
Hi Patti, Rail Ninja are a third-party ticket provider and a legit company. You can book direct with KoRail which will likely be cheaper. Cheers, Steve
I will need to travel from Seoul (Myeondong or Insadong) to Busan. I am a solo traveler and from the US and do not know the public transportation system at all. Which would be the easiest for me so that I do not get lost.
Hi Doris, the train would probably be easier as it was a little hard to find the right bus stop in Seoul. It’s also the quickest way to get to Busan, though pricier than the bus. Hope this helps. Best, Steve

The flight crews were extremely professional, helpful, and courteous. Departure and arrival times were accurate. No delay. I will use K airline again. Thanks
Not very comfortable seated in the back plane due to turbulence
We were seated at the back and that was very uncomfortable for me with the turbulence we experienced on our way to Chicago.
Everything about Korean air is great, hands down! Will always prefer this airline from other carriers.
I enjoyed flying on Korean Air. The service was great and the food was yummy. They served white fish.
I enjoyed flying on Korean Air. The service was great and the food was yummy, especially the bibimbap and cold spicy noodles. The only thing that bummed me out on this red-eye flight was that my seat did not properly recline so I was not able to sleep.
Ford not that great the seat not to big for leg room like other airline
On time and flight crew are always so happy to help and always smiling unlike other airlines.
Crew was ok, but some passengers were a bit rude. Again, all outlets were not working, only the really slow charging usb plug on the entertainment system. Entertainment system was also bugged, some features just crash, the touch screen wasn't working and when trying to watch a movie the onscreen display kept flashing off and on making it very difficult to watch.
As posred earlier the crew was very accommodating & professional. Thank You Allen
All though you can not help it the kids was loud and unruly, The crew was very accommodating and professional. Thank You Allen.
No priority counter check in for families with young children.
The flight was delayed from GUM to ICN, there was no notification on how delayed the flight would be. Although we received notice, there was no specified time given. The flight was also very uncomfortable.
ok flight, but charged for everything. water, food, baggage. no free water available, I had to plead to give me water to take medicine.
Need to consider about zero entertainment services and lack of flight information!
I can't board the 2nd flight due to the last 1st flight. In the 1st flight check-in, I can't board due to the stupid problem of K-ETA visa. The booking system and the flight company should inform the customer a few days earlier. This is the worse experience in my life. I won't use KAYAK and the airline anymore. My friends were also surprised about this stupid situation. I won't use KAYAK and T'way anymore.
I can't board the flight due to the K-ETA problem. You should inform the customer clearly a few days before the flight. I can't cancel/change the flight now. This is the worst experience in my life. I also never hear about this kind of bad experience. I won't use the booking system and the flight company anymore.

Something to note is that the traffic, mainly when leaving Seoul and driving close to Daegu, can be pretty brutal, so it could conceivably take you closer to 5 hours by road.
How much does it cost? This is a little more difficult to calculate as to have to consider the cost of renting a car in South Korea and this is dependent on how many days you choose to stay in Busan
How long does it take? Typically the drive from Seoul to Busan takes around 4 hours, without taking into account any stops along the way or excessive traffic
Seoul to Busan on a private tour
Of course, there is another alternative to travelling by public transport between Seoul and Busan. A private tour is potentially the best option for those travellers with very limited time to explore the whole of Korea.
On a private day-tour of Busan from Seoul , you can see all of the highlights of Busan, while starting and ending the day in Seoul.
Included in the cost of the private tour are 2 return tickets on the KTX train, private transport around Busan and all of the entry fees for sites around the city.
As it is a private tour, it can be expensive for one or two people, so we would only recommend this option for groups that have limited time to explore Busan.
How much does it cost? Prices vary by group size but it starts from around £238/$293 per person , which includes your return KTX train ticket from Seoul and a private day-tour of Busan
How long does it take? The entire day-trip is likely to take around 10-12 hours , making a full-day affair
How often do they depart? The tours depart once-a-day , every day of the week

How to get from Seoul to Busan: the full guide
Getting from seoul to busan by plane.
- Plane prices are often the cheapest between all the other transportation options on this list
- Airports are conveniently linked to the city center both in Seoul and in Busan
- The flight time is only 45 minutes
- Plenty of daily flights to choose from year-round
- You must factor in the time spent on the road to the airport and the fact that you must arrive at least one hour before the flight’s departure
- Luggage costs extra when you travel for a longer period
- When you travel with hand luggage only, you must comply to the packing restrictions and must pay attention to any liquids you carry etc.
On our first trip to Busan, because we were going to spend only 3 nights in the port city, we chose to travel by plane.
Originally, the plan was to travel by KTX (fast train) but at the time we looked for tickets, the price for the train was double that of the plane ticket.
In Seoul, internal flights depart from Gimpo International Airport . Getting to the airport is easy by subway from Seoul Station.
The Airport Railroad (blue line) links Seoul Station to both Gimpo International Airport and Incheon International Airport.
Depending on your departure point and where you choose to stay in Seoul , the train ride will last longer or not. From Seoul Station to Gimpo the ride takes 23 minutes and costs 1450 won (1550 won when you pay cash).
When you don’t have any luggage to check in, most companies will allow online check-in. We always do that because we don’t want to waste extra time at the airport waiting in line.
If however, the company doesn’t have this option, at Gimpo Airport, as soon as you enter the departures terminal you will find check-in machines. The process was fast and easy every single time!
How long does the flight from Seoul to Busan take
The flight is very short and it only takes less than one hour .
Once again, since we were leaving relatively close to the airport, the total time we spent on the road made it worth it to go with this option.
We strongly suggest we do a simulation from your hotel in Seoul and see how much time will it take to get to the airport before you purchase your flight ticket.
How much does a plane ticket from Seoul to Busan cost
As we all know, the price of a plane ticket depends a lot and it is influenced by a number of variables.
How much time in advance you purchase your ticket, is it during the peak time, are you leaving on a crowded day with high demand, the time of the day you prefer to fly out, and so on.
All this being said, and as mentioned above, in many cases, the plane ticket from Seoul to Busan will cost less than KTX or going by car.
Just to give you a rough idea, for our trip in May (outside of the peak season, but not a low season either) we bought the ticket on May 10th and flew out on the 21st.
Only 11 days before the flight, hand luggage only, and we paid 170,400 KRW f or 2 people for a return flight. That’s roughly 140 USD.
How to find the best flights from Seoul to Busan
We always check Skyscanner for the best flight options, because in some cases flying our with one company and in with another might make more sense.
Jeju Air, T’Way, JinAir, and Air Seoul are all companies operating flights between the 2 largest cities in South Korea.
We flew with Jeju Air and our experience was just fine.
How to get from Busan airport to your hotel
Busan is operated from Gimhae International Airport , which is set a little bit outside of town, in the northwestern part.
Getting from the airport to Busan city center or your hotel is easy by subway.
The purple line – Gimhae Light Rail Transit – links the airport to the Sasang subway station . From there, you can change to the Green line, Blue line, or Red line, depending on your final destination.
Getting around couldn’t be easier, and you can use your TMoney card to pay here as well. You can also buy single tickets or daily passes.
See the whole list of prices here!
If you prefer to save time and get to the hotel as soon as possible, you can always take a taxi from the airport. We never had any problems in South Korea with taxi drivers trying to make us pay more than what the ride was worth.
Just make sure to have the name and address of your hotel printed out (or on your phone) in Korean characters – we often had issues with drivers who couldn’t find addresses written in English.
Even though the subway might take longer and might require at least one change, traveling by car or taxi could sometimes be slower than expected because of the traffic situation.
Getting from Seoul to Busan by KTX
This might be the fastest way to get from Seoul to Busan, but it depends a lot on your departure point in Seoul.
Of course, trains are leaving from Seoul Station, but from where we lived it took roughly 45 minutes to get to the station.
However, if you choose a hotel in the central area, KTX will be the fastest way to get from Seoul to Busan. It is a bullet train for a good reason after all.
- No luggage limit and no regulation with regards to liquids and cosmetic sizes
- It leaves you close to Busan’s city center
- You travel in clean and comfortable conditions and can get to do some work
- Various train options to choose from throughout the day
- Pretty expensive in general, and even more so when you buy the ticket from the train station
- Factor in the time it needs to get from your hotel to the train station
We always prefer taking the train whenever we travel to developed countries that offer great options (Italy, Germany, South Korea – only to name a few).
Trains are not only fast, but they offer clean and comfortable conditions, you have more space for movement, you can walk around, take some fresh air, and even work or stay connected to your friends and family.
Of course, it all comes with a higher price, but when you book your ticket ahead of time, you can mitigate some of that risk.
How much does a KTX ticket cost?
As mentioned above as well, sometimes train tickets can cost much more than plane tickets. However, expect to pay more for tickets during the weekend and peak seasons, when demand rises.
Another time you want to book your ticket in advance is when you are planning to travel during the Korean holidays. If that’s the only time you can make it, it is what it is, but if you can be flexible with your schedule I strongly suggest you book other dates for your Busan escape. Or at least book your tickets way ahead of time.
As with any place, there are ways of making sure you catch the best deal, and in general you can do that by booking in advance.
For example, if I were to look now (March) for a train departing in 4 days or even 10 days, I would get the following price, for a one-way ticket.
It is also worth knowing that on the website you can only book trains with a maximum of 10 days in advance , as for my searches.
Another thing worth knowing is that this price is not fixed and it depends on the time of the year and the season. For example, I remember the KTX ticket was roughly 80.000 won for a person one-way when I tried to book it during May. I would expect the prices to go even higher during the summer season.
How and where to book your KTX Ticket
On the official Korea Rail website , select the normal travel type, direct trains, your departure date and time, and you can either select KTX under “Type of Train” or leave it to “All”.
You will see plenty of KTX train options popping up, marked in intense pink. A train departs roughly every 30 minutes.
Select your train and time by clicking on First Class or Second Class and you will be taken to another window from where you can enter your details, you get allocated a seat and a car, and you choose your payment information.
The good news is that Korail accepts also cards issued overseas. If you are not familiar with South Korea, that is something that doesn’t happen a lot with online payments. Most companies and shops only accept cards issued within Korea.
Select the first option and proceed to the payment.
Once you have your ticket confirmed, you will be asked to print out your ticket and have it with you on the train. We had read about the Airport Express train as well on our first visit as tourists to Seoul, but truth be told, you can also have the ticket on your phone.
Have it saved in your virtual wallet or do a print screen and you will be ok.
We know that printing the ticket would be complicated especially when you are traveling for a South Korea vacation itinerary.
OPTION 2: Trip.com
Even though the official site is in English, if you would have to exchange the ticket or have any questions, we wouldn’t be 100% sure you could contact someone in English.
After all, their hospital section for foreigners had a robot answer only in Korean…
If you, however, want to have access to a website with multilingual customer support, that accepts payment in multiple currencies and offers updates in real-time via email, you should try booking through Trip.com .
Prices are shown in USD, and you have the peace of mind that someone will be able to help.
OPTION 3: KOREA RAIL PASS
Another great option for when you are planning to take more train rides, want to book on an international site, and use your card, is Klook.
They offer Korea Rail Passes for 2/3/4/5 days – the days don’t have to be consecutive, you can use KTX and KTX-Sancheon High-Speed Trains, along with other types of trains.
OPTION 4: AT THE TRAIN STATION
If you would rather purchase your ticket in person, you can always go a few days before the trip and buy the ticket from the counter or from the vending machine.
You can also purchase the ticket on the day of your trip, but that would be stressful and you would need to be there at least 30 minutes in advance.
We always prefer to book everything online, because it is far less stressful and it allows us to organize our trips in advance.
How long does the KTX train ride from Seoul to Busan take
The train ride takes between 2 hours and 20 minutes and 2 hours and 45 minutes. All rides are direct and you should not worry about having to change trains.
Getting from Seoul to Busan by normal train
Of course, in South Korea there aren’t only fast train options, they do have “normal” trains as well.
- fares are more affordable for the normal trains – sometimes as little as almost half the price of a KTX ticket
- you still get to travel in comfortable and clean conditions
- you still get to walk and work
- don’t waste time at the airport
- trains are also much slower and you can expect to spend anywhere between 4 to 5 hours on the road
- not so many train options throughout the day
These trains will show up on the same websites mentioned above and you can choose between the following 2 options:
- Mugunghwa – intercity train, that stop in many stations along the way from Seoul to Busan, and only has Economy Class options. They do offer free wifi and power sockets.
- ITX-Saemaul – express train. Before KTX, this was the fastest train option. This train has only Economy Class as well, and have larger and more comfortable seats. They do offer free wifi and power sockets.
As you can see, there are not so many options as compared to KTX trains, but these are good to have in mind when you are traveling on a budget or you have enough time to spare.
Where to buy tickets for the normal train from Seoul to Busan
As mentioned, you have the same 2 options available, either on the Korean Railway website or on Trip.com .
How long is the trip by slow train from Seoul to Busan
That depends on the train type you choose and it can be anywhere between 4 hours and 40 minutes (for ITX-Saemaeul ), or even close to 6 hours ( for Mugunghwa ).
How much does a train ticket cost
The train ticket can cost between 29.000 and 42.000 won depending on the train and time of day/week.
Where do you take the slow train from in Seoul
Both Mugunghwa and ITX-Saemaeul trains depart from Seoul Station and stop in many more stations along the way.
Getting from Seoul to Busan by car
- you are in (almost) full control of your timetable and itinerary
- you can stop along the way and explore other destinations as well
- you can see South Korea from one end to the other and will have the car to further explore Busan’s surrounding area
- you will need to allocate at least 7-8 hours for the drive, with pit stops along the way
- traffic can get crazy during certain times of the day, especially in and around Seoul
- on top of the gas cost you must factor in the highway fees as well
- speed limit in South Korea is of maximum 110 km/h on the highway, with most portions having a limit of 80 hm/h
On our second trip to Busan, since we spent one week in the city, we decided to travel by car. We planned to go on several day trips from Busan, thus the drive made sense for us.
However, we wouldn’t suggest you drive for a shorter than one week vacation. Any of the above transportation options would make much more sense when you only spend 3-4 days in Busan.
We chose to stay at a hotel that offers free parking including in the price, and we only took the car out for day trips outside of the city.
When you drive in South Korea make sure to understand how lanes are marked as you approach tolls:
- blue lanes are for the people that have a Hi-Pass subscriptions – you won’t get a ticket as you pass through this lane and you won’t be able to pay later, thus you will receive a fine if you don’t have a subscription and pass through this lane.
- red lanes are for tricks and large size cars – you can pass through this lane but chances are the machine won’t feel you and won’t issue a ticket (that happened to us in a few ocasions)
- unmarked lane – that is the one you must choose when you don’t have a Hi-Pass. The machine will issue a ticket, and once you exist the Express way, you will have to pay for it, depending on the distance.
Another thing worth knowing is that on the highway you are not allowed to drive on the lane marked with 2 blue lines. Those are the lanes for intercity buses.
Both Naver Maps and Kakao Maps will estimate the amount you should expect to pay throughout your drive from Seoul to Busan. Depending on the itinerary, you can expect to pay around 20.000 won one way.
How long is the distance between Seoul and Busan by car
Depending on your departure point in Seoul and destination in Busan, the distance is roughly 425 kilometers.
How much time does it take to go by car from Seoul to Busan
That also depends mainly on the time of the day you choose to leave Seoul. Most part of the traffic will be in and around Seoul, thus as soon as you manage the exit the city, you will find the expressway much less crowded.
Travel early in the morning, and you can be in Busan in roughly 5 hours. Start your drive a bit later and you can expect to be there in 6-7 hours.
Getting from Seoul to Busan by bus
- comfortable and clean travel option
- the most affordable way to travel from Seoul to Busan
- it offers you the flexibility to read, work, or do other things while you travel
- no luggage limitations
- the bus station is not really close to the city center in Seoul
- the ride takes longer than KTX
- you don’t have the flexibility to stop on the way to Busan
- depends a lot on the traffic conditions
If you don’t feel like driving, but you would prefer a car over the train or plane, there is always the option for taking a bus from Seoul to Busan.
Buses in South Korea are very clean, have comfortable chairs that turn into beds, have plenty of room for luggage, and are overall great transportation options.
Moreover, as mentioned above, buses have special dedicated lines on the highway, and they usually manage to travel much faster and avoid getting stuck in traffic much less than normal cars.
Where does the bus from Seoul to Busan leave from
Buses from Seoul to Busan leave from Seoul Gyeongbu Express Bus terminal (경부고속터미널). The terminal is on the subway lines 7, 3, and 9, and you need to factor in the time you need to get there.
How long does the bus ride from Seoul to Busan take
That depends on the traffic, but a bus ride from Seoul to Busan should take roughly 4 hours.
Of course, depending on the time of day and traffic, you can expect delays.
Where can you buy bus tickets and how much do they cost
You can buy your bus ticket online here , or you can buy it in person from the bus station.
We would always suggest purchasing your tickets online ahead of time because you never know how much time you will have left on the morning of your departure.
Change the website to English and do the following search:
All the available bus options will pop up and you can choose the one that suits you best. As you can see, prices range from 24.200 won to 56.100 won for late-night premium buses.

Seoul to Busan by KTX Train: How to Get There Fastest
Do you want to know how to get from Seoul to Busan by KTX train ? This guide will show you the detailed steps to go there .
As an overview, the Korea Train eXpress (KTX) is a high-speed train system that travels between Seoul and Busan at around 305 km/h speed .
So, if you’re looking for the best and fastest way to get to Busan , this is definitely a great option. 🙂
How to Take KTX Train from Seoul to Busan (In 5 Steps)
Why you should buy korail pass, how to book ktx train ticket online, how to cancel your ktx train ticket.
Take the KTX train from Seoul Train Station directly to Busan Train Station . The ticket price for adults is 59,800 won , while for children it is 29,900 won . The journey will take roughly 2 hours and 40 minutes .
From Seoul Station, the first KTX train departs at 5:12 AM. The last one leaves at 10:27 PM from Monday to Thursday, and at 10:48 PM from Friday to Sunday. Trains run at intervals ranging from 5 to 60 minutes.
To make it easier to understand, here’s how to go to Busan from Seoul by KTX train in 5 simple steps .
Step 1. Take a Subway to Seoul Metro Station
The first step is to take the subway to Seoul Metro Station . You can take the subway Line 1 , Line 4 , or the Gyeongui-Jungang Line to there. All three are connected to this station.
Step 2. Walk from Seoul Metro Station to Seoul Train Station
Once you arrive at Seoul Metro Station , head to Exit 1 and take the escalator up twice . Then turn left, and you will see Seoul Train Station . It’s just that simple.
Or, you just follow the signboards of “Seoul Station” that will lead you to the train station .
Step 3. Purchase KTX Train Ticket at Seoul Train Station
Upon arrival at Seoul Train Station, proceed directly to the ticketing office to purchase the KTX train ticket.
The KTX train fare varies depending on the age. It is 59,800 won for adults (13 years old and above) and 29,900 won for children (6 to 12 years old) . Please note that tickets come with randomly assigned seats .
Another option is to book the KTX train ticket online , and I’ll show you later how to do it . This option is ideal for a single rider because it assigns seats by random selection .
And if you’re traveling with at least two people , it is highly suggested to purchase the KORAIL PASS . It lets you pick your preferred seats early and easily get your tickets online .
This is especially useful when you’re going to Busan during peak season or school holidays , as KTX train tickets tend to sell out quickly .
Everything about the KORAIL PASS will be explained later. If you want to check it now, just click here and you will be directed to the section on why you should use KORAIL PASS.
Step 4. Board the KTX Train from Seoul Train Station to Busan Train Station
Once you have your KTX train ticket, refer to the big departure board in Seoul Train Station to determine which track to get on the train to Busan .
The display shown in the departure board switches between English and Korean , so nothing to worry about.
Or, you can simply ask the staff in the ticket office to help you find the right track for your train.
And don’t forget to bring your passport and train ticket when boarding the train.
Step 5. Walk from Busan Train Station to Busan Metro Station
When you reach Busan Train Station , head to Gate 2 and walk straight. In less than 1 minute, you will see the Busan Metro Station.
From Busan Metro Station, you can take the subway or bus going to other Busan attractions such as Haedong Yonggungsa Temple , Lotte World Busan and Gamcheon Culture Village .
Then for your return journey , just take the KTX train from Busan Station to Seoul Station .
The KORAIL PASS is specially designed for foreign visitors using the KTX train . It lets you book your preferred seat in advance , unlike the regular round-trip KTX ticket from Seoul to Busan, which costs 119,600 won but assigns seats randomly.
The KORAIL PASS costs a bit more, an extra 1,400 won per person, but it’s worth it because:
- You can choose and reserve your seat online beforehand.
- You can print your tickets at home and get on the train right away.
- The pass allows for flexible travel dates – you can pick any two days within a 10-day window, giving you the freedom to adjust your travel plans as needed.
If you’re travelling with 2 or more people , I highly recommended to buy KORAIL PASS (Flexible 2-Day Pass).
There are several types available: 2-Day PASS, 3-Day PASS, 4-Day PASS, and 5-Day PASS. So, if you’re considering buying the pass, here’s my suggestion to help you choose the right one.
- Group Type: Choose “Saver (Group of 2-5)”
- Pass Type: Choose “Flexible”
- Package Options: Choose “Regular Pass”
- Validity: Choose “2 Days”
My suggestion above is suitable for those who are travelling to Busan from Seoul, and vice versa.
Don’t get confused with the “2 Days” validity though. This simply means that you can choose any 2 days within the 10-day validity , starting from the date you used the pass.
You can check and book the KORAIL PASS here .
Step 1. Visit the KORAIL Website and check the TICKET RESERVATION page
To book a KTX train ticket to Busan , visit the TICKET RESERVATION page on the KORAIL website. The best place to board the train is Seoul Station due to its central location and accessibility.
Simply follow the steps below to assist you further in searching the available KTX train departure times.
- Travel Type – Choose “Normal Type”
- Travel Path (Direct/Transfer) – Choose “Direct”
- Date of Departure – You can choose your preferred departure date and time. It’s highly recommended that you set the “Hour” to “0” so you get a full list of the departure times on that specific date.
- Departure / Arrival – Choose departure as “Seoul” and arrival as “Busan”
- Type of Train – Choose “KTX”
- (Type and Number of) Passengers – Input the number of people you are travelling with.

If you encounter difficulties booking through the KORAIL website, you can easily book via the Seoul-Busan KTX website as an alternative.
Step 2. Be sure to check the KTX Departure schedule
After clicking the “Inquiry” button , you will now see the full list of available KTX train departure times from Seoul .
You can click on the “Magnifying Glass” icon to know the different train fares for adults and children .
Once you confirm your preferred departure time, proceed to click on the “Select” link. Then, it will direct you to the next page, which will allow you to fill in your personal information.
Step 3. Fill in all your personal details
For this step, you will need to fill in your personal details . The main purpose of having a password is that it allows you to access your ticket online. This means you can easily cancel it or re-print your ticket.
Another option to cancel or re-print your ticket is by using your email address.
After inputting all relevant information, proceed to the next step and click the “NEXT” button.
Step 4. Complete your KTX train ticket payment
Before paying for the KTX train ticket, double-check that you have set Seoul as your departure city and Busan as your destination. Also, ensure all your personal information is correct.
If everything is good, choose “(Credit card) issued overseas (VISA, MASTER, JCB)” option. Then, click the “NEXT” button to fill in your credit card information.
Step 5. Print your KTX train ticket
After completing your payment successfully, click the “PRINT” button to get an electronic copy of your KTX train ticket . There’s no need to redeem your ticket at Seoul Station .
Just book online and present your e-ticket together with your passport when boarding the KTX train. As easy as that! Likewise, you can reserve your KTX train ticket a month before your travel date.
Make sure you book your return train ticket as well if you plan to go back to Seoul. The process of booking the return trip is just the same. Simply repeat steps 1 to step 5, with your departure as “Busan” and arrival as “Seoul”.
In case you change your mind and decide to use the KORAIL PASS to ride the KTX train for additional savings, don’t worry. Below are the steps on how to cancel your train ticket and get a refund.
Step 1. Visit the KORAIL website and click the REISSUE/REFUND tab
The first step is to click the REISSUE/REFUND tab on the KORAIL website.
Then, select the “Refund” option and fill in your personal details. For your information, the “Reissue” option is used to re-print lost tickets. After that, click the “Inquiry” button.
Step 2. Cancel your KTX train ticket and then request for a refund
The next step is to choose the ticket you want to cancel and then click the “Refund” button. Very simple, right? If you want to know how much the refund amount is, you can check the refund information here .
My Final Thought
If you want to save time, the quickest and easiest way to get to Busan from downtown Seoul is by taking the KTX train . As a reminder, don’t forget to buy KORAIL PASS (Flexible 2-Day Pass) if you are travelling with 2 or more people. This will surely help you save money for a round trip to Busan.
